RUPTUREDTALE END OF YEAR ONE: BEHIND THE SCENES

Bottom of the morning everyone, Tilemahosbra here.

Haha, oh wow. Can't believe it's been a year since I began all this. It's hard to believe it honestly. As always, a big thank you to all of you for following this blog, I appreciate it.

For today's occasion I will talk about a few stuff regarding Rupturedtale's development and history. I might say more once more of the comic is made, but for now...

HOW IT ALL BEGAN:

Before I start with this, I would like to say... I'm a guy who, well, really enjoys fanwork. If there's something I really like there is a 100 percent chance I will be looking for fanwork of it. Most of the time fanmusic, fangames or even fanfictions. My favorite kinds of fanwork are alternate universes and what if scenarios. I always liked seeing those executed and explored.

And Undertale, was NO exception.

My deep love for fanwork was the reason I created this AU.

And this is the entire story of how it came to be.

Around early 2016, I began reading a lot of Undertale AU sprite comics, most notably Storyshift by Voltra. And I joined a now private server for discussing Undertale AUs.

One little, well, """trend""", I began noticing is that people started doing a lot of role placement AUs. You know, taking this one dude and putting him in the place of that other dude. On that note I started thinking to myself "Hey, what if I made an AU as well?", an AU that wasn't all about changing placements, but simply had a different concept all together. Something that wasn't done.

That's when the idea of Strangetale was born.

Strange's concept was very simple. Every character gets a weird and strange trait. Toriel becomes a deep fanatic of pro wrestling, Sans becomes a grumpy jerk that hates everyone (sound familiar?), Papyrus becomes a very LOUD fan of opera, Undyne becomes a professional wrestler, Alphys becomes a reverse weaboo and Mettaton becomes a dropout from American Idol.

The problem with this concept is that, in the core?

It was pretty damn stupid. Hardly something people could enjoy. Especially with the radically different personalities.

Time was passing, and I was slowly getting ideas to change Strangetale to something else. The first one was "What if a main character died before you showed up?". It was something I haven't seen done before. Later, Toby "Don't Call Me Radiation" Fox released various Beta Undertale track. One of them made me even more inspired for the new idea I had, as for which track it was, you can figure that out on yourself.

Strangetale then began going through a transformation of concepts and tone.

It was no longer a weird trait AU.

It was a failed genocide AU.

Strangetale became Rupturedtale.

I decided to take the really light hearted nature I planned and instead decided to focus on a more serious and dark tone.

The concept of the AU was now about one of the previous fallen humans committing mass murder, only to be stopped by a brave monster and with Frisk now entering a hostile and dangerous underground. Nobody was in the Ruins anymore. Nobody except five dangerous Mercenaries hired to watch for humans.

The problem now? I put very little actual thought into it.

I was lazy.

I really didn't want to make a new protagonist. The mere idea of it terrified me. That's why I resorted into making, what was more or less discount version of Inverted Fate's Frisk that had a broken butt.

I stopped working on Rupturedtale after reaching Snowdin. Almost nobody cared about what I was creating, so why bother?

If I wanted to make a good story, I would have to stop and seriously think about it. Plan stuff, make interesting things.

And thus I went to the Preboot universe and destroyed it like a lunatic.

Now I had to start from scratch!

And the first thing I did was make a brand new sparkling protagonist.

Which is exactly what I'm gonna talk about now!

THE REBOOTENING AND THE CREATION OF JACK PENTHOS:

After brainstorming on what the story should be, I had to create a new protagonist, Frisk would simply not cut it.

My spriting skills were never really good, so when I went to make a design...

The result was this, uh, thing.

This is the earliest design I ever made for Jack. A bored boy wearing pink and puprle with a dog living inside their gigantic hair.

The idea was that, to contrast with the dark and gritty tone, I’ll make the protag a really silly looking guy with giant hair!

I scrapped the idea after five seconds, if you can’t tell.

Jack went through several changes on the course.

The giant hair went away, he got a hat, and then he became a teenager.

Why all this?

Very simple.

During the preboot days, one of the comments and assumptions I received, was that Rupturedtale was just gonna become darker, and darker, and darker until eventually there is nothing but pitch blackness. That comment? It gave me an idea.

The AU is already darker then Undertale.

So why not make it “funnier” too?

In result, I decided to make Rupturedtale both very comedic and very dark. A combo that I personally enjoy in a lot of stories.

Plus…

This project is Undertale related.

I can’t throw the humor out of the window.

At least for the main route.

Another thing I wanted to do was do the opposite of what I wanted to contrast. Instead of having a silly character get thrown inside a grim and dark world, I created a serious normal character get thrown inside a ruptured world of weird and wacky. Imagine Squidward from Spongebob, except he’s the main star of the show. A combo like this gave me the opportunity to do A LOT of things. Both for comedy and narrative reasons.

As a character, I decided to do my own thing instead of making a stupid IF Frisk ripoff.

As I mentioned before Jack was created as a character meant to contrast the setting, but ultimately still blend in.

I also wanted to make someone that the reader can relate to, or sympathise with, but still be his own person, instead of just another blank state silent protagonist. His personality at first was “Grumpy teenager that just wants to go home”, then it greatly expanded, creating what (Quite hilariously) many people call the best protag an AU ever had.

Jack’s name at first was “Todd Pathos”. With Todd being a reference to a show and Pathos meaning “Passion” in Greek. While nice and cool at first, considering his personality and the theme of the au, it really didn’t fit him. His name ultimately became Jack Penthos, with Jack being a reference once again and Penthos meaning “Mourning” in Greek, which was a lot more fitting for what he truly was.

As a character he also had a lot of inspirations, a few of them are…

A few of mine and my brother’s antics and traits. Mainly the sarcasm and immaturity.

Bojack Horseman, for both of his first names, part of his design and the idea of making a relatable protag.

Squidward Tentacles and many other straightmen in media, for a a few of Jack’s traits.

Phoenix Wright, for part of his design and the occasional snarky monologues (inner or not). Jack’s Posing of Utter Mockery also came from a an Ace Attorney swap au concept where Phoenix Wright was Manfred’s pupil, and due to his snarky and memetic nature, basically made fun of Manfred by imitating his mannerisms and poses.

Frederick from Unexpecterchanged. I really liked that the au had a seemingly normal softspoken child. It was another one of the factors that made me go, “Hey what if a normal teen fell down instead?”.

Frisk from Inverted Fate, Dorked’s work always impressed me and Frisk made me think of various flaws to give to Jack. Along with other things that added depth.

The next thing I wanted to do with the reboot was avoid doing the thing I hated the most in these kinds of fanworks. And that is recycling dialogue or just retell Undertale’s story. Where’s the fun in that?

Now that I had my protag, I had to focus on the first Act of the comic.

The Ruins.

THE RUINS ARC AND THE CORE MERCENARIES

Like most AUs, I had to begin from somewhere, and that somewhere was The Ruins.

My main focus for the first arc was to establish what kind of character Jack was, and to show what kinds of dangers he should be ready to face. Along with his flower companion and his favorite little mercs.

Oh, that ghost guy too.

The Ruins in Rupturedtale are very much devoid of life after the previous human’s massacre. Anyone who values their safety lives in the Ruins City, also known as Home. The puzzles are starting to break, and the mercs who now live here don’t care about them.

Aesthetically wise, I first thought of painting the Ruins green to have a change of pace from the old boring purple.

Problem is that it didn’t make much sense for them to be green aside for looking cool.

The next thing was the Puzzles. As a guy who personally never really liked Undertale’s puzzles, I decided to take the piss out of them instead of changing them. Cracks on the floor? Just jump over them. Spikes? Jump over them too. The Ruins in Rupturedtale ended up becoming a parody of what the canon Ruins were.

Toriel’s Home also went through a few changes due to the mercenaries living there. Dead plants everywhere, broken stuff/trash and poorly made scribbles on the walls and floor. Along with various damages caused by Madjick’s magical experiments.

Another change which will carry on to the other acts is enemies showing up in the overworld instead of random encounters. Something which in my opinion, flows better.

As for the characters…

Like in the days of the Preboot, I wanted to have Flowey be friendly towards the human, only difference is that he wouldn’t betray him at the end of the Ruins for kicks and giggles. Or instantly, like in canon. Just a jolly little flower that doesn’t have any sort of ulterior motives!

Final Froggit is the first enemy Jack encounters and the last stop before Jack’s actions turn things around, due to their experience they are not as dumb as any other froggit, but still prone to having no idea what they are doing, as we saw them getting tricked.

There’s not much to be said about Whimsalot, they are still hopeless like in canon. After Jack deals with them they strive to find a better meaning for them.

I gave Astigmatism a rather stereotypical bully personality for the time being and an emphasis on eye puns and wordplays.

Napstablook received a bigger appearance in the reboot for a number of reasons. Mainly to show Jack’s kinder side, an example that not all monsters want him dead and due to the fact that our little ghost is more important in here than in canon.

Madjick has a much greater role in the reboot as well. When I came to writing them, I decided to make Madjick and the core mercs act as sort of Anti-Toriels. Madjick’s personality was built off from the few things shown in their canon fight. The obsession with shouting magic words, the annoying attitude, and the trollish personality. Plague Knight from Shovel Knight was an inspiration for their character. Mainly the erratic and insane behaivor at times.

Madjick was also meant to show up as early as Part 3, acting as Jack’s rival and main obstacle.

I ended up pushing Madjick’s appearance 2 parts later, since I felt the pacing was hurt a bit if they showed up this early. Not to mention I didn’t know how to execute this.

And finally, Knight Knight.

Knight Knight in Rupturedtale is meant to act as the first wake up call of the story. A tall, menacing foe that never messes around and always gets on the point. She’s the first real danger Jack faces on, and the first monster who can make him give up.

Knight Knight’s personality was also based off the few things shown in her canon fight, with some inspiration drawn from Team Fortress 2’s Heavy.

MISCELLANEOUS TRIVIA AND OTHER FUN FACTS

Jack was originally gonna be very cowardly in the beginning of the comic. That part of his character was reduced and became very minor instead, thanks to getting informed of his SAVE powers.

A majority of every magic word Madjick has said is a reference to something.

A few of the more obscure ones, are...

SCRUNGUS = A word uttered by a very sexy man I once saw in an undertale comic.

NAWRER ROBREHT = Warner Brother arranged differently.

PAMPICAS = Enochian insult uttered by enemies in Bayonetta.

SALIM KUSHARI = The best chef.

PARAMI SACRONSACT = Open each word and search them individually on soundcloud. You’re welcome.

O PAPOULIS KIMATE = Grandpa is Sleeping in Greek.

THANATO REFUTATUM = One of Grandma Swamp’s spells from Shovel Knight.

A lot of the jokes in the comic were never really scripted, they came to me while I was making panels.

This part of Astigmatism’s fight is an example.

And lastly. The phone menu seen various times was inspired by Saints Row the Third.
