Amazing Investigation - Sentencing of Dozens for Fraud
Dozens sentenced for their roles in Atlanta-based fraud and money laundering operation that stole over $30 million from individuals and companies. ATLANTA, GA (STL.News) More than three dozen individuals have been sentenced for involvement in a large-scale fraud and money laundering operation that targeted individuals, corporations, and financial institutions throughout the United States. The defendants used business email compromise schemes, romance fraud scams, and retirement account scams, among other fraud of over $30 million from numerous victims. “The Department of Justice has tirelessly worked for more than four years to obtain justice for dozens of victims impacted by this brazen criminal organization,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan. “The defendants’ sentences should serve as a stark warning to others that fraud and money laundering crimes are top priorities for this office and our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.” “Several members of this conspiracy fraudulently obtained funds from ERISA-covered employee benefit plans. The funds, which originated from unwitting individuals’ retirement accounts, were deposited into personal and business bank accounts that were created in furtherance of this money-laundering conspiracy. The greed of the conspirators caused workers and prospective retirees to lose significant portions of their hard-earned retirement funds. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration to protect the integrity of employee benefit plans,” said Mathew Broadhurst, Special Agent-in-Charge, Southeast Region, U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General. “These fraud scams, although not violent, are not victimless and can be devastating to businesses and individuals who fall prey to them,” said Keri Fairly, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta. “The sentencing of all these individuals shows the FBI’s dedication to working with our partners to hold anyone accountable who would steal from hard-working and honest individuals, rather than put in the work themselves.” “These scammers defrauded individuals and companies, enriching themselves,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Travis Pickard, who oversees Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) operations in Georgia and Alabama. “HSI and its law enforcement partners will continue to work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the nation’s financial infrastructure and ensure that financial crimes do not go unpunished.” “This sentencing illustrates the Secret Service’s dedication to protecting our nation’s financial systems,” said Steven R. Baisel, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Atlanta Field Office. “We are thankful for our law enforcement partners’ commitment and support as we worked together to bring this case to justice.” According to U.S. Attorney Buchanan, the charges and other information presented in court: The defendants engaged in multiple fraud and money laundering conspiracies that stole millions of dollars frms located throughout the United States and abroad. Confident Aberdeen sweep aside hapless Hamilton
Aberdeen found their scoring touch to build on their League Cup semi-final win to ease aside Hamilton Academical.
The Dons had not scored more than once against anyone other than St Mirren this season.
But captain Graeme Shinnie fired them into an early lead and James Wilson followed suit with a looping long-range drive soon after.
Mikey Devlin’s second-half drive deceived goalkeeper Gary Woods before Accies’ Dougie Imrie was sent off.
The win does not improve Aberdeen’s league position, but manager Derek McInnes will be delighted having said pre-match that his side’s priority was to keep pace with teams above them.
Accies started the evening just below the eighth-placed hosts but ended it having fallen eight points adrift of the Dons and dropping down to third bottom behind Motherwell.
Red Devil helps haunt Hamilton on Halloween
Visiting manager Martin Canning had strung five across the back as his side looked to end a run of eight consecutive defeats at Pittodrie.
It is fine to pack your side with defenders, but they might as well not be there if they fail to press their opponents.
Shinnie is not noted for his long-range shooting, but the Scotland midfielder was allowed an age to pick his spot after eight minutes.
Max Lowe had provided the early impetus, rampaging forward from left-back as the Englishman looked to impress after Andrew Considine failed to recover from his head knock against Rangers at Hampden.
Not that Accies were yet out of the game at this stage and Lowe was unable to prevent opposing full-back Aaron McGowan unleashing a low drive against the outside of the far post.
However, it was on-loan Manchester United striker Wilson’s turn to be given time to pick his spot and his powerful effort whizzed in from 22 yards.
Canning was forced to replace Fredrik Brustad with fellow striker James Keatings shortly before half-time and the visitors’ goal threat dipped, if anything, after the break.
Devlin was able to stroll forward from central defence and, although his 30-yard drive had plenty of power, Gary Woods responded with a Halloween howler as the former Accies player came back to haunt them.
There was still time for Accies’ misery too deepen, with captain Imrie sent off in the final seconds for a second yellow card as their run of games without a win stretched to five.
Accies toothless without MacKinnon – analysis

BBC Scotland’s Tyrone Smith at Pittodrie Stadium
After booking their League Cup final place at the weekend, this win perhaps provided further evidence Aberdeen have turned a corner this season.
McInnes will certainly hope so – and his side looked hungry and up for it from the off.
There was plenty of slick play aided by a real masterclass of finishing, the kind of display that has come to characterise Dons performances of recent years.
As for Hamilton, they certainly missed the snarling, and suspended, Darian MacKinnon, who could have played at Pittodrie if they had contested the midfielder’s ban, but arguably a “let’s take our medicine” approach was the prudent thing for Accies to do.
The Lanarkshire side were well beaten, but in fairness, they will not be judged on the outcome of matches like this one and you still sense they have the guile and fight required to survive the brutal battle in the Premiership basement.
However, the night belonged to Aberdeen, who have taken a big step towards getting back into the top six and a few teams above them may now be starting to look over their shoulders.

Celtic 4 Hearts 0: Brendan Rodgers' side break unbeaten record set by Lisbon Lions in ruthless fashion
There have been better Celtic sides – most notably the team whose record of 26 successive undefeated domestic games was overtaken with this comfortable victory – but Brendan Rodgers and his squad have placed their name in the pantheon with a remorseless application to the job in hand.
The opener from Callum McGregor was followed by a double by Scott Sinclair and a Patrick Roberts strike to see off a Hearts side who were well short of the capacity to trouble the Scottish champions and runaway league leaders.
Recollection of the circumstances in which Jock Stein’s players set the original record conjures a vision of abundance far beyond the means of the current Scottish game.
In 1966-67 the Lisbon Lions were European club champions, while Rangers were losing finalists in the European Cup Winners’ Cup to Bayern Munich after extra-time in Germany and Kilmarnock were semi-finalists in the Fairs Cup – precursor of the Uefa Cup – where they lost 4-2 to Don Revie’s Leeds United in a tie which saw all six goals scored in the opening 38 minutes of the first leg.
That was the season, too, when Dundee United made their European debut in the Fairs Cup, winning home and away against a Barcelona side who would finish runners-up to Real Madrid in La Liga. In the second round they beat Juventus at Tannadice before losing on aggregate, but it was United who ended the Lions’ unbeaten run with a Hogmanay victory on Tayside.
Patrick Roberts celebrates with his teammates Credit: PA
All of which was garnished by the extraordinary demonstration of superiority by the Scotland team, who cavorted around Wembley while inflicting the first defeat suffered by Alf Ramsey’s men since England won the World Cup on the same turf the previous summer.
The statistics of the chronicles, though, record no distinction about the quality or otherwise of the opposition.
The current Celtic side can play only the teams provided by the fixture schedule and, as The Daily Telegraph has detailed they can now set their sights on overtaking another sequence, the 25 straight domestic wins achieved in 2003-04 under another Northern Irishman, Martin O’Neill.
This game was entirely of a piece with the pattern established early under Rodgers. For a short spell – in this case of half an hour – there was the possibility but not the likelihood that Celtic could be thwarted. The only exception was on Dec 3 at Fir Park when Motherwell lost 4-3 to a Tom Rogic strike in injury time after having led 2-0 after 35 minutes.
Scott Sinclair has been an inspired signing by Celtic Credit: PA
At the same stage of these proceedings Hearts were a goal behind, yet they were playing against a Celtic side minus significant regulars. For a start, they were without their two principal strikers, Moussa Dembélé and Leigh Griffiths.
Both had been casualties of Wednesday’s home win over St Johnstone, Dembélé with a swollen knee and Griffiths with a tight calf, with Sinclair being asked to fill the spearhead role.
Further encouragement for Hearts seemed to have been provided by the warm-up, during which Stuart Armstrong aggravated a calf injury which caused him to be replaced by McGregor. Fortune is a fickle jade, however, and Hearts’ hopes had been raised only to be dashed by events.
They were slow to produce any kind of threat but it was just as the Tynecastle players produced their first cogent passage of play that they fell behind, skewered by a counterattack sprung through their extended ranks and brought to a conclusion when the understudy, Sinclair, supplied the stand-in, McGregor, for a touch and shot which made its way into the net behind Jack Hamilton off the inside of the far post.

Thereafter, it was only a matter of how large Celtic’s final tally would be as gap in possession between the sides widened until it was 3-1 in the Hoops’ favour although, surprisingly, it took until the final quarter-hour for the crushing blows to be delivered. They arrived in swift succession.
In the 77th minute a dangerous Kieran Tierney cross was intercepted on the goal line by Aaron Hughes but as the Hearts defender turned to clear he was closed down by Sinclair, from whom the ball rebounded into the net. Three minutes later Tierney prompted Roberts to take a touch and then find the mark with a rising shot for Celtic’s third.
Managers ranked as players
The rout was completed in injury time when Lennard Sowah fouled Hoops substitute Jack Aitchison for a penalty kick was Sinclair converted with aplomb.
Next potential landmark for this Celtic group is the record established by O’Neill’s men 13 years ago. “Our idea is to keep going,” said Rodgers. “I try to focus only on what we can control, which is your training and arrival at the game. The players will tell you that I’ve virtually not spoken about it at all.
“There’s enough pressure in playing football matches but the consequence for us is that we’re out there on our own now, which is an incredible achievement, but we’ve got to look to Wednesday against Aberdeen and to keep it going.”
Celtic (4-2-3-1): Gordon; Gamboa (Lustig 77), Simunovic, Boyata, Tierney; Bitton, Brown; Roberts (Aitchison 71), McGregor, Forrest (Henderson 66); Sinclair. Subs De Vries (g), Sviatchenko, Mackay-Steven, Izaguirre.
Hearts (4-5-1): Alexander, Hughes, Kitchen (Beith 80), Sowah; Walker, Smith, Cowie, Martin (Sammon 78), Nicholson (El Ouriachi 58); Johnsen. Subs Noring (g), Oshaniwa, Bikey, Zanatta. Booked Martin.

Dundee beat Hamilton to clinch first points of season
Dundee finally earned their first Scottish Premiership points of the season by edging Hamilton Academical.
Andy Boyle headed in the opener from a Calvin Miller free-kick and Karl Madianga sealed the win in injury time.
The victory brings Dundee’s seven-game losing streak to a halt and sends them to within a point of Motherwell and St Mirren, easing a little of the pressure on manager Neil McCann.
Hamilton hit the bar twice and Fredrik Brustad missed from point-blank range.
But despite the defeat, Martin Canning’s side remain in ninth place with six points.
Dundee earn first Premiership points – reaction[1]
Semi-finals ‘almost a disaster waiting to happen’ – Budge[2]
Dundee finally find killer touch
For weeks, Dundee have looked comfortable on the ball without threatening and there was a lot of that here, too – comfortable passing play, little penetration.
They were still painfully wasteful for long spells. Ryan Inniss and Adil Nabi squandered second-half chances at a time when McCann’s men were firmly in the ascendancy, feeding off the confidence engendered by Boyle’s opener.
The saving grace for Dundee was that Hamilton were equally profligate. Brustad’s miss was spectacular, screwing a delicious Rakish Bingham cross wide inside the six-yard box.
Bingham himself bent a free-kick just off-target soon after, James Keatings cracked the crossbar with another set-piece, and Mason Bloomfield hit it again with a header in the dying minutes.
Dundee rocked, but held on to their clean sheet. And as Hamilton pressed in desperation, they struck the killer blow. Madianga took up a good position, and when the ball found him, he swept it into the net.
Bedlam at the Dundee end. Bedlam in the Dundee dugout. Bedlam, roaring and bear-hugs among the Dundee players on the park.
Can long-awaited win spark Dundee revival?
BBC Scotland’s Jane Lewis at New Douglas Park
Beleaguered Dundee and their manager feel they are much better than their league position indicates. Might this be the start of a much-needed revival? In one game, they doubled their haul of league goals scored this season, and kept their first clean sheet of the campaign.
The challenge now is to take the jubilation this victory so clearly generated and turn it into the sort of form that can propel them up the table. That challenge is considerable, with their next four fixtures against top-six teams, including unbeaten league leaders Hearts and Celtic.
But it will feel an awful lot less daunting than it would have been had they fallen to another loss in Lanarkshire.

Lawless stunner earns Livi third straight win
A stunning Steven Lawless goal gave Livingston their third straight Premiership victory with a comfortable win over Hamilton Academical.
Lawless thundered home a brilliant left-foot drive from around 25 yards after just three minutes.
In a turgid contest of few chances, Gary Woods denied Livi a second just after the interval, brilliantly saving Alan Lithgow’s header on to the post.
The Lions climb to third – level on points with champions Celtic.
Accies remain second-bottom with only three points from their four league outings.
All-action Lions roar again
Livingston look like a nightmarish team to tackle. They are quick, tenacious and abrasive when they have to be.
And despite their meagre budget and their most turbulent of starts to an unexpected return to the Premiership, they are thriving.
Their formidable backline dealt easily with the pitiful ammunition Accies fired at them. They never looked like conceding a goal to a visiting team that had registered the fewest shots and efforts on target in the league this term, scoring only three times.
The first half passed without Hamilton shooting once, while the second only yielded two shots from the away side.
Scott Pittman fizzed around midfield while Dolly Menga was a constant nuisance to the Accies defence with his dynamism and persistence up front. He found space on several occasions but could not find the target.
Instead, it was Lawless who provided the phenomenal breakthrough. Jettisoned by Partick Thistle after their relegation last term, the little midfielder is helping his new team flourish in the top flight, while his old one flounder in the second tier.
He unleashed a howitzer of a left-foot drive first-time after Keaghan Jacobs’ free-kick bounced into his path.
Only that excellent Woods save prevented Livi attaining a more comfortable margin of victory.
More to follow.

St Johnstone get the better of sluggish Hamilton
St Johnstone punished Hamilton Academical’s lacklustre defending to secure successive Premiership wins.
Blair Alston bundled in the opening goal after David McMillan’s header had been saved and McMillan then nodded the visitors’ second.
McMillan and Chris Kane fired wide as Accies continued to struggle after the break.
Rakish Bingham lashed home to give Hamilton hope but they could not avoid a third defeat in four league games.
Tommy Wright’s side move on to seven points before the international break while Martin Canning’s Accies are three points above bottom side Dundee.
Swanson at Saints where he’s ‘happiest’[1]
Callachan joins St Johnstone from Hearts[2]
Hamilton Accies bring four new faces in[3]
Accies exposed by clinical Saints
Hamilton recruited James Keatings, Scott Martin, Matthew Kilgallon and Frederick Brustad on transfer deadline day while Saints added two Friday captures – Ross Callachan and Danny Swanson – to Tristan Nydam’s arrival earlier in the week.
But none of the new signings started in Lanarkshire and only Callachan and Nydam made the bench.
The lack of fresh faces did not seem to affect Accies early on with Bingham’s low shot testing goalkeeper Zander Clark and Steven Boyd’s effort deflecting just wide.
But the hosts passed up several opportunities to get the ball clear after Scott Tanser’s free-kick had hit the wall and eventually McMillan’s diving header was clawed away by Gary Woods only for Alston to score.
And Saints took advantage of Hamilton’s passive approach again when McMillan applied a simple downward header to Richard Foster’s delivery.
McMillan volleyed a glaring chance wide from Tony Watt’s cross before Accies scored against the run of play with Boyd holding up well and Bingham applying a ruthless finish.
Neither Boyd nor Kane could emulate that kind of finishing prowess in the closing stages.
Boyd flashed a shot past Clark’s goal before, at the other end, Watt’s replacement Kane knocked wide of the gaping goal after Woods had come off his line to clear at the feet of Alston.
Saints still Hamilton’s ‘bogey team’ – analysis
BBC Scotland’s John Barnes at the Hope Stadium
A Hamilton official prior to kick-off advised me that St Johnstone were their bogey team and so it proved once more.
Accies have now won only one of their past 12 matches against the Perth club and that was done against nine men with a last-minute goal on April Fools Day, 2017.
McMillan should have made it 3-0 and put the game out of sight when he volleyed wide.
The second-half introduction of Dougie Imrie and Sam Kelly paid off for Hamilton with Bingham soon scoring to put them back in the game.
However, Wright’s men produced a competent performance to see off the threat of the home side and extend an impressive league run of only one defeat in their past eight Premiership matches stretching back to last season.
Managers confident in new signings – reaction
Hamilton manager Martin Canning: “Had the signings happened on Thursday, one or two might have been involved in the game.
“Frederik is still in Norway, we managed to get the deal done in time but couldn’t get him across in time for the game and Keatings I spoke to last night and he’s just a little bit short on match fitness, so he’ll come in and do a little bit of work tomorrow. But it’s good to have all four boys on board.
<!–
“The two goals we conceded were really poor from our point of view and if you give a good team like St Johnstone a 2-0 head start it’s difficult to come back into the game. Second half, we get our goal but we don’t really threaten as much as we would like.”
St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright: “I think we deserved to win. We were in control for large parts of the game.
“We went 2-0 up and probably second half we were wasteful as we had numerous opportunities to kill the game off and while it’s 2-0 it always leaves it open for the opposition to get back in the game and they did but they didn’t really threaten us after they scored.
“Danny gets all the headlines but Ross Callachan is going to be an important player for us. He’s got a bit of physicality about him and he can nick a goal.”

Controversial Boyata scores only goal as Celtic struggle past Hamilton
Dedryck Boyata responded to a fans’ banner claiming he was “not fit to wear the jersey” by scoring the only goal as Celtic beat Hamilton.
The Belgian, the subject of a rejected bid from Fulham, ruled himself out of recent games, claiming he was injured.
Manager Brendan Rodgers refuted the defender’s claims, and said he was “sad” at the situation.
But Boyata’s close range finish earned Celtic the points despite a lacklustre performance from the champions.
The victory moves Celtic into second in the Premiership before next Sunday’s Old Firm derby with Rangers.
Before that, Rodgers’s side host FK Suduva of Lithuania at Celtic Park on Thursday in the second leg of the Europa League play-off round, having drawn the first leg 1-1.
Hamilton, meanwhile, remain in the bottom half of the table, but will take consolation from the concession of just one goal in two away games after a home humbling by Hearts.
