Synopsis: Frank and Marianne have a complicated past. They meet three years after they broke up (he felt he wasn't good enough for her and lied about wanting to see someone else) after having a secret relationship.

He has a new girlfriend, but it's nothing serious. They can't stop thinking about each other (especially after he apologizes) even though they both try to move on (she kisses Connell and tries to be with him, but she can't while Frank leaves Daphne downstairs at a party just to talk to Marianne). They realize they can't stay away from each other and they get back together.

Unfortunately, he gets an offer for a temporary job in New York after a few weeks, and she encourages him to take it but doesn't want him to make any promises about the future since she wants to stay home.

After one year, they meet again.

“you can’t remember anything” -nat

“yeah, y/n, were you dropped on the head as a baby or something?” -tony

“cut it out, guys. it’s not their fault they forgot thor’s birthday. besides, hes had a couple thousand” -steve

“are you calling me old, captain?” -thor

“at least im not the only one” -steve

it wasn’t just birthdays you forgot

much much more serious than that

rendezvous points, mission details, plans of attack, perp descriptions, where you put your keys, where you put your gun

you name it you forgot it

i mean—not always, but enough for it to be the running joke

“keep your comms on, y/n. not having a disaster like last time when you couldn’t remember whether to cut the red wire or green wire” -tony

as far as missions went, though, you were a bit of a powerhouse so you didn’t really need to be looked after on that front…just had to make sure not to blow anyone else’s cover

“*gasp* was i supposed to give the signal? i just kinda went in” -you

kinda forgetting what you’re talking about in the middle of sentences sometimes but like, just glitching out

the avengers honestly did find it endearing

just a hyper kid who cant get their thoughts in a solid line

but they’d continue making jabs at you constantly

but what does she know about those they call heroes and their laundry list of regrets?    there are no wise - words,     no well - worn phrases she can pull out as a balm to the soul,    soothing the blisters caught on hands that keep forcing into the fire.    her regrets fall as rose petals,    colour the shade of her cheeks as she twirls a slowly disintegrating paper straw around an ice latte mostly melted.    there’s amusement that tickles over skin only freckled when people get close enough to see,    imagines herself offering out the list of mistakes and bad days and hands on her body when they never should have got close;     would it help him to know that ordinary people still taste bile at the back of their throats?      ❛  you might do.    i’ve got no idea...  ❜      her mother called her cold,     pressed the word into her cheeks on the rare occasion she would kiss them,    writing unlovable over veins until her blood could not separate it from her own name.    she’d be comforting if she could summon it out,    would say the right thing in the way she’s imagined herself over and over again,    would be able to rewrite the odd phrase so it couldn’t cause anything other than showing that she cares.     and she does,    under it all,   achingly so.      ❛   but right now you don’t know whether you will or you won’t,    and at least if you do it,    you’ll know whether you will or won’t.    no worrying about if you should have done it.   ❜
