PREVIOUSLY... You take a steadying breath, then look up at Steve and say, “Jeff Connor is my former husband.”
[SEPTEMBER 28 - AFTERNOON CAMPAIGN FLIGHT FROM ATHENS TO MIAMI]
Some eyes had been on you, but now all of the staff turn to look at Steve to gage his reaction to this statement. His mouth is slightly open, a storm in his blue eyes, but he doesn’t say anything.
You consider him for another moment, then pull out your phone, scroll to Jeff’s name in your contacts, and hit the call button. As the call starts to connect, Bucky leans over to whisper something in Steve’s ear. Steve frowns and shakes his head. Bucky shares a glare with him, then gets up and leaves the staff cabin.
As your call rings through to Jeff, you also stand, but you leave the staff cabin in the other direction, passing through to the private area that only you and Steve have total access to - anyone else needing to knock or be invited in.
You’re about to close the door when Steve catches it and follows in behind you.
You two exchange a look, both of you evidently trying to give nothing away about what just happened, and then you turn away to look out the window just as Jeff picks up on the other end of the line, answering with your name in an urgent and concerned tone.
"Hey, Jeff," you respond, keeping your voice neutral despite the tension you feel. You can feel Steve's presence behind you, a silent but palpable force in the small cabin.
"I'm so sorry," Jeff's voice comes through the phone, sounding genuinely distressed. "I didn't mean for any of this to get into the press. I swear I had no idea."
You take a deep breath, willing yourself to stay calm. "What happened, Jeff?"
There's a sigh on the other end of the line. "I was at a barbecue at Mark and Sarah's last night. You remember them, right? From our old neighborhood?"
"Yeah, I remember," you say, a flood of memories from your previous life washing over you.
“I hadn’t heard from them in a couple of years, but they reached out, and I thought it would be nice to reconnect. Started talking to a new guy, I’d never met him before, figured it was one of their neighbors. He seemed nice enough, we got to talking about work, hobbies, life. I had no idea he was from TMZ and definitely didn’t know he was recording our conversation,” anger bleeds through the tail end of his explanation.
You sigh. You have no reason to doubt his story. “I’m sorry.”
“You’re sorry? No, I’m sorry! I was stupid saying anything to a stranger, and more stupid for even going to the party at all.”
“What? No, Jeff, I’m sorry because a choice I made is impacting your life. It’s not fair that you’re getting targeted by press, especially tabloids.”
Jeff is silent for a beat, and then he says. “He paid Mark and Sarah to get access to me.”
Your heart feels sick. “How did you-?”
“Lawyers from your campaign called me an hour and a half ago when TMZ put it up online to question me, they called back twenty minutes later with confirmation of the money trail.”
“I’m sorry,” you say again - because you are, and because you don’t know what else to say.
Jeff sighs heavily on the other end of the line. "Stop apologizing," he says, his voice soft but serious in his directive. "This isn't your fault."
You lean against the window, watching the clouds drift by below, a stark contrast to the turmoil you feel inside. "But it kind of is, Jeff. The press is only interested in you because we were married."
"That doesn't make it your fault," he insists. "The fact that some tabloid vultures want to profit off our past relationship isn't on you."
There's a moment of silence on the line, filled only by the faint hum of the plane's engines. You can feel Steve's presence behind you, a silent sentinel.
"You okay?" you ask finally.
"I'm... I'm mad. And disappointed - in myself and in them. I feel like an idiot. I should’ve known it was a weird time for them to reach out after not seeing them for so long."
"Jeff, you couldn't have known that. You assumed good intentions. It’s part of what makes you who you are.”
The words came so easily out of your mouth, but once they’ve been said, your chest aches, and part of you wishes you could take them back.
You don’t know what he’s thinking on the other end, but you know it can’t be easy for him either, because he only manages a small, “Thanks,” and then there’s another pregnant pause between you.
Jeff clears his throat, breaking the silence. "Did I mess anything up for the campaign? I know how important this is, and I'd hate to think I've caused any problems."
You shake your head, even though he can't see you. "No, Jeff. If anything, your comments were probably the best-case scenario. You were kind and respectful. It's hard for anyone to spin that negatively.”
There's a soft chuckle on the other end of the line. "Well, I guess all those years of you drilling the importance of tact into me finally paid off, huh?"
You can't help but smile. "You never needed me for that."
"You know," Jeff says, his voice taking on a thoughtful tone, "it's kind of amazing to see you in action like this. I mean, I always knew you were capable of great things, but if this works out, I can’t wait to see what you do in action as First Lady.”
“Thanks, Jeff,” you reply, a lump rising in your throat. “Listen, I better go.”
“Yeah, me, too,” he says. “Take care.”
“And you,” you reply. “Bye.”
You hang up the call, and for a moment, you just stand there, staring out the window at the clouds below. The weight of the conversation, of the past and present colliding, settles heavily on your shoulders.
Finally, you turn to face Steve. He's leaning against the cabin wall, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression unreadable. The silence between you is thick with unspoken questions and emotions.
“You heard all of that, right?” you ask, knowing some of his senses are enhanced through the super soldier serum that changed his body eighty years ago.
He nods.
You sigh and take a seat on the arm rest of one of the chairs, no longer wanting to stand, but not wanting to be fully seated while he’s still standing. “I thought you knew about Jeff. It’s in my file.”
One of the first things meetings for you joining the campaign had been to sit down with Jake, the head of the campaign, Elsa the communications director, and your assistant Sophia, to review the opposition research file that had been compiled for you - everything that an opponent could potentially try to dig up from your past and attempt to attack you or the campaign with. Your marriage to Jeff had been part of that.
Steve's jaw clenches, and he looks away for a moment before meeting your eyes again. "I... I never read your file," he admits, his voice low and tinged with regret.
You had suspected as much given how he reacted to learning about Jeff, but the confession still hits you like a wave, leaving you momentarily speechless. A kaleidoscope of emotions swirls within you - surprise, confusion, a hint of hurt, and something else you can't quite name. The plane's engines hum in the background, filling the silence between you.
You study Steve's face, taking in the furrowed brow, the slight downturn of his lips. His blue eyes, usually so clear and determined, now hold a mix of guilt and uncertainty. It's a vulnerability you've rarely seen in him, and it catches you off guard.
"You never read it?" you question, your voice barely above a whisper. The implications of his admission begin to unfold in your mind, and it feels like pulling on a thread, unravelling a piece of what you thought had developed between you.”Why?”
"I trusted Pepper," he says softly.
The cabin suddenly feels smaller, the air thick with unspoken words and emotions. You open your mouth to respond, but before you can, there's a sharp knock on the cabin door.
“Come in,” Steve calls out.
The door swings open, revealing Bucky. His expression is a mix of concern and frustration as he strides into the cabin, a thick manila folder clutched in his metal hand. The soft whirring of the arm's plates adjusting is audible in the tense silence.
"You're an idiot, you know that?" Bucky says, his voice a low growl as he thrusts the folder at Steve. "I can't believe you never read this."
Steve takes the folder, his fingers curling around the edges. The weight of it seems to surprise him, and he glances down at it with a furrowed brow. "Buck, I-"
"Save it," Bucky cuts him off, running a hand through his long hair in exasperation and then turning to address you. "I just found out before you made your call that this punk never bothered to look at your file. I’m sorry, I didn’t raise him to be so inconsiderate.”
Steve scoffs, “Raise me? You’re only one year older than me!”
In other circumstances, you would laugh at this exchange, but in this moment you can’t, your mind absorbing each new and shifting moment.
Bucky rounds back on his best friend. “I read it, Steve. I read every damn page because I wanted to make sure you weren't getting played or walking into a situation you’d regret. But you? You just went along with it, no questions asked?"
Steve's jaw clenches, his grip on the folder tightening. "I trusted Pepper's judgment. She wouldn't put someone in this position if she didn't think they were right for it."
"Right for what?" Bucky challenges. "The campaign? Or you?"
The question hangs in the air, heavy with implication. You feel your heart rate quicken, very aware of your presence in this conversation about you.
Steve's eyes flick to you for a moment before returning to Bucky. "Both," he says quietly.
Bucky shakes his head, looks at you and gives barely a quarter of a smile - seemingly all he can manage, and then leaves the two of you alone again.
Steve's eyes meet yours, a mix of emotions swirling in their blue depths. "I trusted Pepper," he says softly, his voice tinged with a hint of regret. "When she told me about you, about this arrangement, I didn't want to reduce you to a file full of facts and figures. I wanted to get to know you as a person, not as a dossier."
He strides further into the cabin and takes a seat across from you. "I thought it would be more... genuine that way. To learn about you through our interactions, through the campaign, through..." he trails off, gesturing vaguely between the two of you.
“It has been. Even if we got a slow start.” Both of you know you had taken turns keeping your guards up at various points over the past four months. You slip down properly into your seat.
“We’ve been talking more with each other, about each other, though, so I have to ask… Is there a reason you’ve never brought up your divorce?”
You clasp your hands in your lap, but you continue to hold his gaze, even though your heart constricts painfully. “Aside from thinking you did know about him, it didn’t naturally come up, and I wasn’t eager to just drop one of the most painful pieces of my past into our conversations because it wasn’t a divorce.”
Steve’s brow furrows even more. It’s no wonder the man has developed so many worry lines.
“I was smitten from the moment I met him, and he loved me back the way you grow up dreaming about your future husband - only it was even better because it was real. Everything about it was so normal and real. We dated, we got married, he finished his residency and joined a good family practice. We bought a house. We stayed up late watching stupid movies or playing games or going to concerts on the weekends or just talking on the weekends. We started talking babies.”
You pause and look away.
“And then?”
You look back to Steve, and, eyes burning with tears you don’t want to cry, you say, “I didn’t exist for five years and he did.”
His face falls immediately.
You press on because this is like pressing on a wound when the skin has healed but the muscles are still sore beneath the surface.
“I reappeared in a house Jeff had sold. He was my first call, of course, and he still had the same number. He picked me upHe’d just been remarried for about a year, and they were four months along expecting their first child.”
You pause, letting the weight of your words settle in the cabin. Steve's face is a mix of shock and sympathy, his blue eyes wide as he processes what you've just revealed.
“It’s something like thirty percent of couples who were married before The Blip who have had to file for this new legal classification to end a marriage. They call it a cessation. An annulment legally voids a marriage as if it never happened, and divorce is too commonly associated with a negative ending, ergo new procedure and new language.”
Steve's face crumples with understanding and sympathy. He leans forward, his elbows on his knees, hands clasped tightly together. "I'm so sorry," he says softly. "I had no idea."
You nod, blinking back tears. "It's okay. I mean, it's not okay, but... it's been a few years now. I've had time to process it."
Steve's eyes search your face. "But it still hurts."
You let out a shaky breath. "It was surreal. Like waking up from a dream, only to find that the nightmare was real. Jeff was devastated too, in his own way. He'd mourned me, moved on, built a new life. And then suddenly I was back, throwing everything into chaos. We both knew we couldn't just pick up where we left off, but it was hard to let go of what we'd had."
Steve nods slowly, his eyes never leaving your face. "I can't even imagine what that must have been like for both of you."
"It was complicated," you say, your voice barely above a whisper. "We tried to be friends at first, but it was too painful. Too many memories, too much history. Eventually, we decided it was best to go our separate ways."
Steve reaches out hesitantly, his hand hovering near yours before he pulls it back. "That must have been incredibly difficult," he says softly.
You nod, swallowing hard. "It was. For a while, I felt like I was just going through the motions. Everything I had known, everything I had planned for my future, was gone in an instant."
"How did you move forward?" Steve asks, his voice gentle.
You take a deep breath. "Slowly. Day by day. I threw myself into work, into causes I cared about. I reconnected with old friends who had also returned, made new ones. And eventually," you pause, meeting Steve's eyes, "I started to feel like myself again.”
Steve nods, his eyes filled with understanding. "It's amazing how resilient we can be," he says softly. "How we can rebuild our lives from the ashes."
You smile faintly. "It's not always easy, but we find a way."
You can see how - though your experiences had been vastly different - you had each had to piece lives back together through loss and being pushed through time in ways you never could have dreamed.
A comfortable silence falls between you, broken only by the steady hum of the plane's engines. Outside the window, the sun is beginning to set, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange and pink. The clouds below are bathed in golden light, creating an ethereal landscape that seems to stretch on forever.
Steve's gaze follows yours to the window, and for a moment, you both just watch the breathtaking view. When he turns back to you, his expression is thoughtful, almost hesitant.
"Can I ask you something?" he says, his voice low.
You nod, bracing yourself for whatever might come next.
Steve takes a deep breath, his eyes searching yours. "I know this might be presumptuous of me to ask, but you'll always love Jeff, won't you?"
You take in his earnest expression, the way his brow is slightly furrowed with concern. The cabin feels both impossibly small and infinitely vast in this moment, like you're suspended in time and space, just the two of you existing in this bubble of honesty. You consider Steve's question, feeling the weight of your history with Jeff, the joy and the pain, the love and the loss.
"Love is... complicated," you begin, your voice soft but steady. "Jeff was my first real love - the love that weathers storms kind of love. For a long time, he was my whole world. But the world changed. We both changed. And while there will always be a part of me that cares deeply for Jeff, that cherishes the memories we shared and the life we built together, it's more like..." you pause, searching for the right words.
"It's like loving a chapter of a book that's already been written?” Steve offers.
You nod, and your mind clicks, putting together that the two of you share this understanding, too.
You have Jeff and he had Peggy Carter.
“You can look back on it fondly, appreciate the story,” he continues, “but you can never go back.”
"Exactly," you say softly, meeting Steve's gaze. "It's a part of my past that shaped me, but it's not my present or my future."
Steve nods, his blue eyes filled with far too much understanding. "I know that feeling," he says, his voice barely above a whisper.
You both sit in silence for a moment, the weight of shared experiences hanging between you. The fading sunlight casts long shadows across the cabin, painting everything in warm, golden hues.
"Steve," you begin, your heart racing slightly, "I hope you know that despite how this arrangement started, I've come to care about you. Genuinely."
His eyes widen slightly, a mix of surprise and something else—hope, maybe—flickering across his face. "I care about you too," he says, his voice low and earnest, and he looks like he wants to say more, but you cut him off, knowing you need to say what’s been slowly rising to the surface in the back of your mind while the two of you have been alone in here.
“Steve, we have to tell the senior staff of the campaign about our arranged marriage. I don’t know if we go public, but we need to bring them in so it doesn’t get discovered by someone else and revealed in a blindside that no one is ready for. They were already pretty thrown off that you didn’t know about Jeff, and that’s something two people who actually dated - for any amount of time - would have known about each other before tying the knot, and we have got to be kidding ourselves if we think there aren’t other pieces that they think don’t quite fit together.”
Steve leans back fully in his seat and drops his head back, looking at the ceiling. “What, like how we didn’t sit together much before a few weeks ago? Them potentially overhearing any of our conversations where we’re clearly getting to know each other? Or, you know, not sharing a room the nights we stay in the same city and bouncing between the excuses of it being easier so we don’t wake the other one up if one of us has an earlier call time, one of us being too light of a sleeper, or that I don’t sleep as much with being a super soldier and don’t want to keep you up while I take phone calls or strategy meetings?”
You grimace. “Obviously Bucky and Sam know, but the only way the rest of them don’t already know is if they are far too busy doing their jobs from before dawn until after midnight and don’t specifically speak to anyone else on the campaign about the odd things that might raise a flag.”
Steve sighs heavily, running a hand over his beard. "You're right," he admits, his voice tinged with resignation. "We can't keep this up forever. The longer we wait, the worse it could be if it comes out."
You nod, feeling a mixture of relief and apprehension. "So, how do you want to do this? Call a meeting when we land in Miami?"
Steve shakes his head. "No, we need to do it now."
You raise an eyebrow. "Now? As in, on the plane?"
"Why not?" Steve says, a hint of determination creeping into his voice. "We've got the whole senior staff here. It's a controlled environment. No risk of being overheard by the wrong people."
“We should tell Jake first,” you say, standing up and smoothing down your clothes. "As campaign manager, we owe him the courtesy of finding out before the rest of the staff since he is their leader. Then we can work with him to figure out how to tell the rest of the senior staff and map strategy."
Steve nods in agreement, standing up as well. "You're right. Jake should know first." He takes a deep breath, squaring his shoulders. "Ready?"
You give a short nod, your heart racing.
Steve reaches for the cabin door, but pauses with his hand on the handle. He turns back to you, his blue eyes intense. "Whatever happens, we're in this together, okay?"
"Together," you agree softly, though there’s a piece of you that wonders how you ever thought any of this would truly work.
With that, Steve opens the door and you both step out into the main cabin. The staff members look up as you enter, curiosity and concern evident on their faces. You spot Jake near the front, poring over some documents.
"Jake," Steve calls out, his voice steady and authoritative. "We need to speak with you privately.”
Bucky glances glances at you, raising an eyebrow questioningly. You give him a small nod, and he seems to understand, settling back in his seat. Steve is already stepping back into the private cabin, Jake heading toward you, but your gaze lingers on Bucky for another moment. You never thought you would be at a point where Bucky would be supportive of your arranged marriage, let alone getting after Steve and siding with you on how things were between you.
As the three of you enter the private cabin, Jake's eyes flick between you and Steve, his expression carefully neutral. The air feels thick with tension as Steve closes the door behind you, sealing off the curious gazes of the staff outside.
Jake takes a seat, his posture relaxed but attentive. The setting sun casts long shadows across his face, highlighting the lines of experience etched there. You and Steve remain standing, unconsciously positioning yourselves as a united front.
Steve takes a deep breath, his shoulders squaring as if preparing for battle. "Jake, there's something we need to tell you about our relationship," he begins, his voice steady but with an undercurrent of tension. "The story about our whirlwind engagement... it's not entirely accurate."
Jake's expression remains impassive, his eyes moving between you and Steve as he listens.
Steve’s eyes meet your breifly before he continues. "Pepper did set us up, but it wasn't a typical matchmaking situation. It was... an arrangement."
The word hangs in the air, heavy with implication. Jake's expression remains unreadable, his eyes fixed on Steve.
"An arrangement," Steve repeats, his voice low and steady, "specifically designed to provide me with a wife who could potentially serve as First Lady. We met for the first time the day we got married. Everything since then - the public appearances, the interviews, the campaign trail - it's all been part of a carefully constructed narrative."
As Steve speaks, you find yourself transported back to those first awkward days. The stilted conversations, the hesitant touches, the constant awareness of the cameras and the expectations weighing on both of your shoulders.
You watch Jake carefully, searching for any sign of surprise or disappointment, but his years of political experience have clearly honed his ability to maintain a poker face. His fingers are steepled under his chin, his eyes never leaving Steve's face as he absorbs every word.
Steve's voice grows softer as he delves into the more personal aspects of your arrangement - the initial awkwardness, the gradual building of trust, the unexpected bond that has formed between you. You feel a lump forming in your throat as you listen to him describe your journey, realizing just how far you've come.
When Steve finally gets to the end, not going into details, but going right through pieces of the conversation you had about the misunderstanding with Jeff, not reading your dossier, and then talking through it together, both of you are quiet, waiting for Jake to process and respond.
He leans back in his seat, the leather creaking softly under his weight. For a moment, he simply looks at you both, his gaze moving between you and Steve with an unreadable intensity.
Then, to your utter astonishment, a small smile tugs at the corner of his mouth. "I know," he says quietly.
The words hang in the air, heavy with implication. Your jaw drops, your mind reeling from this revelation, and you can see Steve's eyes wide in surprise. The cabin suddenly feels smaller, more claustrophobic, as if the walls are closing in around you.
"You know?" Steve manages to choke out, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jake leans forward, his elbows resting on his knees, that small smile still playing at the corners of his mouth. "I've known from the beginning," he says, his voice low and steady. "In fact, I was the one who insisted on it."
Jake continues, his eyes moving between you and Steve. "When Pepper approached me about running this campaign, I knew it would be unlike anything we've ever seen before. A man out of time, a living legend, running for the highest office in the land." He pauses, his gaze settling on Steve. "I’ve made political miracles happen. I’ve done it many times in my career. But I knew I couldn’t make multiple miracles happen. Someone with a name but without much political background? Yes. A third party candidate? Yes. An unmarried man? Yes. All three? Not taking that chance. I told her I’d only take the campaign if she got you married off.”
You blink, no words coming to you. Steve huffs and widens his stance, putting his hands on his hips. His jaw clenches as he processes Jake's words. "So this whole thing... it was your idea?"
Jake nods, his expression serious. "Not the specifics, mind you. I didn't choose who you'd marry or how it would happen. I just laid out the necessity of it. Pepper handled the rest."
You find your voice, though it comes out quieter than you intended. "Why didn't you tell us you knew?"
"I wanted to see how you two would handle it. How you'd work together, how you'd present yourselves to the public and the staff. I needed to know if this arrangement could work, if you could sell it convincingly enough."
Steve's posture stiffens, his voice taking on an edge. "So we've been what, some kind of experiment to you?”
Jake holds up his hands in a placating gesture. "Not an experiment, Steve. A necessary political strategy. And I have to say, you've both exceeded my expectations."
You feel a mix of emotions swirling inside you - relief that Jake already knew, frustration at being kept in the dark, and a strange sense of pride at his last statement. "How have we exceeded your expectations?" you ask, genuinely curious.
Jake leans back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "At first, I was worried. You two were clearly uncomfortable around each other, and it showed. But over time, something changed. You started to gel, to work as a unit. The way you interact now, the little touches, the shared glances - it's become genuine."
Steve's posture relaxes slightly, but his voice is still tense when he speaks. "So what happens now? Do we tell the rest of the staff? The rest of America?”
Jake shakes his head, his expression turning serious. "In an ideal world, yes. But this isn't an ideal world. This is politics. And in politics, sometimes the truth can be more damaging than a carefully crafted narrative."
Steve's jaw clenches again, his discomfort with the situation evident. "I don't like lying to the American people," he says, his voice low.
Jake stands up, moving to face both of you directly. "It's not lying, Steve. It's... selective truth-telling. You two are married. It all moved really quickly. What started as an arrangement has become something more. And that's what we'll continue to present to the world - a strong partnership, a united front."
You feel a mix of relief and unease at his words. "But what about transparency? Isn't that what this campaign is supposed to be about?"
Jake raises an eyebrow, his expression softening slightly. "Transparency in governance, yes. But the intimate details of your personal life? Why should those be public knowledge if the broad strokes are there?"
He moves to the window, gazing out at the fading sunset.
"Look," Jake continues, his voice taking on a gentler tone, "nearly half of all marriages in America end in divorce. People change, circumstances change. What matters is how couples work through those changes together."
He turns back to face you and Steve, his eyes moving between you. "And let's not forget, arranged marriages are still a reality for many families in America. Immigrants from cultures where it's common, religious communities that practice it. The fact that you two have made it work, have grown together - that's actually a powerful narrative in itself."
You and Steve exchange a glance, both processing Jake's words. There's truth in what he's saying, even if it feels uncomfortable.
"So what do we tell the rest of the staff?" you ask, breaking the silence.
Jake considers for a moment. "Essential personnel only - so the directors and your right hands, though I imagine Bucky and Sam already know?” Steve nods and Jake continues. “We tell them the basics. That your relationship started unconventionally, that it was initially more of an arrangement than a romance. But we emphasize how you've grown together, how you've become a true partnership. We focus on the present and the future, not the past."
Steve nods slowly, his brow furrowed in thought. "And the public?"
"For now, nothing changes," Jake says firmly. "We continue with the narrative we've established. If questions arise, we address them honestly but carefully. We emphasize the same message. If people want to fight that, we point out a willingness to sacrifice, an ability to build meaningful relationships, there are a lot of ways we can go with it.”
You and Steve exchange a long look, a silent conversation passing between you. You have reservations, and so does he, but what Jake is saying makes the most sense. At least for now.
Steve takes a deep breath, his shoulders relaxing slightly. "I understand the strategy," he says, his voice low and steady. "And I agree that we shouldn't disrupt the campaign or put unnecessary pressure on our relationship by going public with every detail."
You nod, feeling a sense of relief wash over you. "I agree," you say softly. "What we have... It's complicated and it's evolving, but it's ours.”
“Good,” Jake says. Then his expression shifts, an eagerness in his eyes. "Now that we've cleared the air, I have some news for you," he says, his voice taking on a tone of barely contained enthusiasm.
You and Steve exchange a curious glance, the tension from your previous conversation slowly dissipating.
"Elsa and her team have been working on getting a high-profile interview scheduled for the two of you?" Jake begins, pacing the small cabin with an energy that seems to electrify the air around him.
Steve nods, his brow furrowing slightly. "Yes, I remember you mentioning it a few days ago."
Jake's face breaks into a wide grin, his eyes sparkling with triumph. "Well, I'm pleased to announce that we've secured what might just be the most coveted interview slot in America."
[SEPTEMBER 28 - EVENING DRIVE FROM THE RALLY BACK TO THE MIAMI AIRPORT]
“I don’t like it,” Steve says as soon as the partition between the front and back of the SUV has closed and your privacy is in place. He had also quickly jumped in the vehicle after you and shut the door to prevent anyone else joining you on the way to the airport.
You let out as small of an exasperated sigh as you can manage.
“Like it or not, it’s what’s happening,” you respond.
The the ninety-minute flight time from Athens to Miami (thanks to an airliner boosted with Stark technology) had not been enough time to tell the senior staff about your marriage, do the final logistics review for Miami, and discuss a potential strategy adjustment for the coming days given the revelation about your marriage and the ramp up to the game-changing interview coming up, so while Steve had been on stage, you had been finalizing the itinerary with Jake, Elsa, Bucky, and Pepper, who weighed in over the phone.
“I don’t think it’s the right time for you to head off to the other side of the country.”
You frown at him. “Steve, we all signed off on this plan two days ago! Zoey and I are expected to show up for this string of women-targeted events from San Diego to Seattle, and it would be horrible to cancel now.”
Steve opens his mouth, but you cut him off. “Plus, Helen Santos has agreed to appear at some of those stops with us. This will be huge for the women’s vote on the West Coast.”
Steve's jaw clenches and the breaks between Miami streetlights cast intermittent shadows across his face. "I understand the political value," he says, his voice low and tense. "But after everything that's happened today, I don't think we should be apart right now."
You feel a mix of frustration and warmth in your chest at his concern. "Steve," you say, your voice softer now, "we can't change our entire campaign strategy every time something unexpected happens. That's not how this works."
“Isn’t it?” he asks. "We adjust strategy every day, and this isn't just 'something unexpected.' This is about us, about our relationship. We just told the senior staff about our arrangement. Don't you think we need some time to process that together?"
You lean back in your seat, considering his words. "I get it. Today has been intense for us both. But the West Coast tour has been planned and the advance teams have been preparing everything and rallying people to come. We’ve spent money on ad buys and billboards. Canceling now would raise more questions than we want to deal with."
He sighs heavily, running a hand over his beard. "I know you're right. I just... I worry about you being so far away, especially now."
"Maybe this is exactly what we need right now," you say softly, your voice barely above a whisper.
Steve's brow furrows, his blue eyes searching your face. "What do you mean?"
You take a deep breath, gathering your thoughts. "Think about it, Steve. Since this whole thing started, we've been living this performance, day in and day out, sometimes together, sometimes apart. You got talked into marrying me, Sam had to lecture you and Bucky to start giving me a real chance,” Steve opens his mouth but you put up a hand, “I overheard him in Cleveland. And, yes, ultimately it was good for us to talk about Jeff today, but it has me thinking about a lot of things.”
“Like what?” he asks earnestly, reaching for your hand.
You look down and squeeze it in return.
"Like why I agreed to this in the first place," you say softly. "When Pepper approached me with this idea, part of me thought it was crazy. But another part... another part of me saw it as an opportunity."
Steve's thumb traces gentle circles on the back of your hand, encouraging you to continue.
"After Jeff, after losing everything I had built and dreamed of I was terrified of caring that deeply again. Of investing so much of myself in another person, only to have it all ripped away." Your voice catches slightly, and you swallow hard before continuing. "This arrangement it felt safe, in a way. Detached. A way to move forward without risking my heart again.
“I knew you were a good guy, Steve. One of the best. Everyone knows that. Captain America, the hero who sacrificed everything to save the world. I wasn't worried about an arranged marriage with you because I knew it would be good companionship, doing important work for others. We'd be partners in a noble cause, working to make the world better."
You pause, looking out the window at the Miami streets passing by, the neon lights of the city blurring into streaks of color. When you turn back to Steve, his blue eyes are fixed on you, intense and attentive.
"But then something changed," you continue, your voice soft. "You started to open up, to let me see beyond the shield, beyond the legend. I saw your kindness, your humor, your vulnerability. The way you care so deeply about everything and everyone around you. But I don’t want either of us getting swept up into something just because we’re in this weird life that is the campaign where every minute is compressed and there are scores people around us in addition to the thousands of people we’re meeting every day and a hundred reporters and falling into each other would just be too easy while we play these parts.”
You leave off there, your heart pounding, unsure of what to say next, but sure that you said what you needed to say, even if you don’t know what is means even in your own mind and heart yet. But you know the thoughts and feelings are there.
“Where does that leave us then?” Steve questions after a few moments. “I don’t want us to take a step back.”
Your throat aches yet again with tears that want to come but that you don’t want to shed. “I don’t either,” you finally say. “I don’t feel like it’s a step back, maybe just a step sideways, needing to find more secure footing.”
The electric sound of the partition lowering a few inches interrupts the two of you.
“Captain and Mrs. Rogers, we’re about three minutes out from the airport,” the driver says, and Steve thanks him as he rolls the partition back up.
“It’s only a week,” you reassure him.
Steve sighs. “The whole point of schedule this split in our appearances together precisely at this point was to get the public primed in the idea that ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder,’” he says. “Maybe it’ll work for us.”
You don’t need to grow fonder of him. “Maybe it will clear our hearts more than anything.”
“I guess we’ll see,” he says. Then he turns and looks out the window on his side.
You continue holding hands the last few minutes, but sit in silence.
[SEPTEMBER 28 - LATE EVENING - MIAMI AIRPORT]
The campaign staff swarms around you and Steve as soon as you exit the SUV. The private hangar buzzes with activity as luggage is loaded and last-minute preparations are made. You feel a twinge of anxiety as you realize this is where you and Steve will part ways for the next week.
"Mrs. Rogers, your flight to San Diego is on schedule. Wheels up in 30 minutes," Sophia, your assistant, informs you as she hands you a folder. "I've updated your briefing materials for tomorrow's events."
You nod, taking the folder and trying to focus on Sophia's words even as your mind lingers on the conversation with Steve in the car. The weight of your discussion, of the revelations and uncertainties, sits heavy in your chest.
As Sophia briefs you on the details, you can't help but glance over at Steve. He's surrounded by his own team, nodding seriously as they discuss something. His eyes meet yours for a moment, and you feel a jolt of electricity pass between you. There's so much left unsaid, so many emotions swirling just beneath the surface.
"Mrs. Rogers?" Sophia's voice snaps you back to attention. "Did you hear what I said about the event with Zoey Young and Helen Santos tomorrow afternoon?"
"I'm sorry, Sophia. Could you repeat that?" you ask, forcing yourself to focus.
As Sophia goes over the details again, you see Steve making his way over to you. Your heart rate picks up slightly as he approaches.
"Can I have a moment?" he asks, his voice low.
Sophia nods and steps away, giving you some privacy. You turn to face Steve, acutely aware of the bustling activity around you.
"I just wanted to say," Steve begins, then pauses, running a hand through his hair. "Be safe out there, okay? And if you need anything…”
“You, too,” you offer back.
Bucky approaches out of nowhere, “Sorry, wheels up in ten for us, Steve, but you can take a few more minutes if you sprint to the plane.”
Bucky squeezes your shoulder briefly. “You take care.”
You nod and smile as warmly as you can.
Alone in the sea of people again, you and Steve stall to savor a few final moments, but the uncertainty of how you’ll part is palpable.
“I meant what I said in the car about not wanting it to be a step back for us either,” you start. “I thought I’d have Sophia connect with Bucky about finding thirty minutes a day in our schedules for us to jump on a call together.”
“I think that sounds good,” Steve agrees.
Quiet falls between you two again. Your heart beats hard in your chest because now that it’s time for you to split up and board two separate planes and it was you who insisted it’s what you needed, in the final moments part of you is wavering.
Then Steve moves half a step closer and takes both of your hands in his. His touch is warm, familiar, and you feel a flutter in your chest as he looks into your eyes with an intensity that makes the bustling airport hangar fade away.
"Before you go," Steve says, his voice low and urgent, "there's something I need you to know."
You nod, your heart continuing to pound in your chest, the nearness of him both comforting and electrifying.
"I know Pepper told you I was reluctant to agree to this. She had an easier time convincing me to run than to get married. But the logical points checked out, and since I was already in, I knew I had to be all in, and I trusted Pep.”
You remember your own early conversations with Pepper, the careful way she had explained Steve's hesitation. At the time, you had assumed it was about understanding that Steve needed to become a more conventional candidate with marriage helping that.
Steve's eyes search yours, his voice softening as he continues, "But I gave her that trust because she agreed to make her choice based on the one condition I wanted her to agree to: pick someone she could see me marrying if I weren't running for President. That’s the real reason I never read your file."
Your breath catches in your throat, the weight of his words settling over you.
"When I first met you," Steve says, his thumbs tracing gentle circles on the backs of your hands, "I understood why Pepper chose you. You were kind, intelligent, passionate about making a difference. But I was still guarded, still unsure about this whole arrangement."
He takes a deep breath, his blue eyes never leaving yours. "As I got to know you, as we spent time together, I questioned myself, not knowing how to move forward since I’d faltered in the beginning, but then we started to really make something of this. I don’t know what this is yet or what will happen to us, but I think it’s something good.”
“Steve, I-”
He leans in and kisses your cheek, lingering, and your eyes flutter closed in that moment. You inhale the mix of his cologne with his natural scent, feel the warmth of his cheek against yours, the light scratch of his beard, and you want time to stop right there.
When he pulls back, there’s a serene smile on his face. “I’ll see you in Brooklyn, Mrs. Rogers.”
Tumblr media
next part: coming 12/6
Before anyone gets carried away: THERE WILL NOT BE ANY ROMANTIC OR LUSTFUL CHAOS WITH BUCKY. Purely platonic. But now that you're one of his people, you're one of his people, and he's disappointed/annoyed with Steve, so he's in your corner on this day.

For the dirty A-Z headcanon game can I get an A for Steve Rogers?
From this ask game, and I love you to the end of the line, anon, because this is pretty much THE one I wanted to answer...
A - Alone Time
How does he get off when all by himself?
Does he watch porn?
Is it all in his imagination?
Does he jerk off?
Does he use toys?
Tumblr media
In case it wasn't obvious... MINORS DNI (vaguely coded to be gender neutral for the possibility of steve x reader or stucky or whatever your flavor)
Tumblr media
Here we go, babes. I know I've written several different versions of Steve in various universes, but this is gonna be more generalized and not involve the very specific background experiences I've written into other things. This is just my good ol' fashioned headcanon of Steve masturbating!
This man takes his time--or at least would prefer to--even when it's just him. He will gently touch/play with himself for a while before grabbing his dick. Grazing his nails over his thighs. Pinching his nipples. I think this dude really has a thing with his throat? Like he thinks about teeth along his neck or being pulled forward by it and, yes, a squeeze or two. Don't flame me, I'm just saying!
He craves foreplay, is what I mean, and I don't think Steve feels fully aroused unless more than just his genitals are involved in the act, ya know?
He watches porn, but only for examples. There's a whole lot in modern pornography that is a huge turn-off for him. Steve uses certain imagery or sounds/sayings that he found in porn and kinda edits them together for his pleasure later--like mentally edits, lord knows, because that man would not get the hang of Final Cut Pro OR iMovie, feel me?--plus that way he can imagine a certain someone's voice actually saying those things to him or doing them to him.
Which brings us to Steve's imagination which is unbelievably vivid and runs rampant. Think about it: he's a strategist. He has to see tons of possible scenarios play out all at once, analyze where that leads and where that leaves him, and then plan to thwart or redirect all that happens into an ideal outcome. Don't tell me that artist does not have an incredible mind's eye.
Then we get to Steve finally touching himself expressly to come.
He's toyed with himself for a while, maybe gotten close but held back, probably enjoyed finding friction not with his fist. For some reason, I thoroughly believe he has a thing for fabrics? This guy enjoys the glide of silk and satin. I bet his sheets are nice and slick so he can thrust against them a little and think of a pretty skirt or a dressy, formal glove.
Actual toys? Like the kind advertised as sex toys? Like the kind he'd have to purchase with money in some capacity? No. I think shy Steve hasn't figured out a way to discreetly (and by that I mean, untraceably) do that. He refuses to use anything online attached to his name--credit card or secondary/digital wallet whatever--to buy something or to tell someone what he would want them to buy for him because then that person would know! He'd keel over from embarrassment right then and there!! ARE YOU INSANE?!?!
No. What Steve will do is get seemingly useful things for innocuous reasons and play dumb blond if anyone ever insinuates it could be a sex toy. That man can and will absolutely lie like a champ to keep those secrets. That man is a super soldier but his muscles still get sore; that's what the massager is for, not his taint, nuh-uh no how. How dare you ask him!
Which brings us to the climax: his climax.
Steve prefers to finish in the shower. He's spent all that time enjoying the feel of his hands or various textures, the dry (but not painful) drag of everything before the slick lubrication of lotion or conditioner creates a welcome high under the spray of water, and then, yes, he can clean himself right off afterward. Highly efficient. Also very effective at training his brain to get off quickly in a shower if necessary.
Strategy, you guys, it's all about strategy.
Thank you for asking!

A/N: Are my answers to these like an audition for the Shameless Hoe Club? Maybe. Or maybe Ro has just lost the ability to filter herself...or care 🤭

𝙸𝙽𝚃𝚁𝙾𝙳𝚄𝙲𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙾𝚄𝚁 𝙱𝙰𝚁𝙸𝚂𝚃𝙰 𝙵𝙾𝚁 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙳𝙰𝚈: @fushic0re
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ೀ ㅤ۫ ㅤ۪ㅤ۫ ㅤ ♡ ㅤ . 𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐑𝐈𝐊𝐀:
Tumblr media
From one to five stars, how would you rate your writing? (No downplaying yourself!)
I’d say a 3.5. I’m proud of my work, but there’s always room to grow and improve.
2. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works?
I think my writing style focuses a lot on the complexity of the inner emotions the characters feel. I like to take a lot of time fleshing out their inner selves that way when there’s dialogue or they commit a specific act, readers are able to say to themselves “yea, this is very them”. All in all, I like a lot of emotion.
3. Are there any writers that inspire you?
My fellow writers café members inspire me! Everyone has such different styles and ideas, it really makes me want to be more innovative. I don’t really have any specific muses, to be honest–the fanfiction fandom in general makes me want to write and see my ideas developed.
4. What’s the fic you’re most proud of?
“Take Me Into Your Arms, Siren’s Call” and “Dance In The Dark”.
5. Which character(s) do you find easiest to write and which do you find most difficult to write?
Steve Rogers for sure is my easiest. I love that man with my entire being and have dissected him and my interpretation of him so many times. I find Geralt of Rivia a bit difficult to write, hence why there’s no work for him.
6. Who or what do you find yourself writing about most?
There’s not really a who, more like a what–my emotional wounds. Writing is used as a tool for me to not only bring my ideas to life, but use them as vessels to work out these emotions and proverbially close that chapter of my life by turning them into something positive.
7. Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about!
I have a very cute “Spy x Family” meets “The Incredibles” one shot for Miguel O’Hara in the works featuring Filipina!Reader, Gabriella O’Hara, and reader’s daughter hehe
8. First fandom you ever wrote for?
I’m really gonna expose myself here…it was for Black Veil Brides LMAOOOO
9. Any guilty pleasure trope(s)?
GIRL (gender neutral); black cat gf x golden retriever bf, the mean one being soft for the sunshine one, enemies to lovers, reincarnation.
10. A trope you’ll never, ever write for.
Mafia/mob boss. I have one singular wip with that trope and after that, I’m retiring it. Cannot stand it, no offense.
11. Wildest fic you’ve ever written?
Definitely my demon! Lee Bodecker and ghost!Steve Rogers fics. Those were RIDES.
12. Favorite pairing to write for? (platonic or romantic!)
ENEMIES TO LOVERS, BLACK CAT GF x GOLDEN RETRIEVER BF, and THE GRUMPY ONE BEING SOFT FOR THE SUNSHINE ONE. I clearly have a preference.
13. Do you listen to anything while you write?
Either bossanova, classical music, jazz, lo-fi, or a playlist I made specifically for whatever I’m writing.
14. One-shots or multi-chaptered works?
I don’t have a preference tbh. they’re both very impactful, it just depends on the plot in question.
15. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them!
yES ALL THE TIME. especially for fluff pieces with family dynamics, I always wanna create little side drabbles in the style of “modern family” like they have their very own sitcom.
16. Is there anything you’ve wanted to write, but you’ve been too scared to try?
writing for Geralt of Rivia. The deep lore for The Witcher seems like a lot of ground to cover.
17. What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received?
I can’t remember anything specific, but my fic “Take Me Into Your Arms, Siren’s Call” received a good amount of super meaningful feedback from Filipino readers that meant a lot to me. They expressed how much it meant for them to be seen, especially in a fantasy-fairy tale like story that incorporated our culture.
18. Have you ever gone outside of your comfort zone for a fic? How did it turn out?
Yes, lore building for “Take Me Into Your Arms, Siren’s Call”! I’ve never written anything in the fantasy genre, so that was definitely a challenge. It turned out amazing. I loved writing it and that fic is one that is near and dear to my heart.
19. Tooth-rotting fluff or merciless angst?
I’m a fucking baby and I can only have angst if it’s followed with fluff…..but I do love angst.
20. Do you have any OCs? Tell us about them!
EEEEEE I currently have one OC for a re-write of my series called “Keeping Up With The Starks”. Her name is Camila Santos Stark, a Filipina-American who is the only daughter of Tony Stark. She’s a spoiled heiress but is definitely a no-nonsense woman who you do not want to underestimate. She’s described by others around her as the rational version of Tony–the snark is there, but so are a bunch of other characteristics that Tony doesn’t possess. Steve Rogers is her love interest. He thought she was a spoiled brat, but look who fell in love!
21. If you could enter the universe of any one of your fics, which would it be and why?
Definitely “Take Me Into Your Arms, Siren’s Call” – it’s pure fantasy which sounds amazing. Plus, Namor!
22. Is there anything you wish your audience knew about your writing or writing process?
Eh, there’s nothing really interesting going on behind the scenes–I just write at night with a candle lit.
23. Copy and paste an excerpt you’re particularly fond of.
“I’m a beauty, I’m a beast, it defends on the feast” – “So Cool” by Dounia
24. Ramble about any fic-related thing you want!
If writing frustrates you, that’s a sign for you to step away and take a break. If you initially started writing because you love it, continue to lead with love–don’t kill the joy.

Masterlist
A little info for some general things first before the list of characters.
I mostly will do gender neutral or male readers (trans and cis) but I will do a female reader if it's something someone requested. Not every fanfic will be romantic, some will be platonic or can be seen as platonic, some will be a child reader.
You will not have to worry about me making up what you look like as the reader because I've always found that stupid and sometimes even insulting so any things like color of eyes, hair, skin, etc, will not be listed by me and can be whatever you're brain does.
I will also not be doing smut fics because there's already a lot of smut fics for this fandom, let's get some more fluff and angst in here.
Anyways, here are your options;
Bruce Banner
Bucky Barnes
Clint Barton
Hope Van Dyne
Kate Bishop
Loki Laufeyson
Matt Murdock
Monica Rambeau
Natasha Romanoff
Peter Parker
Pietro Maximoff
Sam Wilson
Scott Lang
Shang-Chi
Shuri
Stephen Strange
Steve Rogers
T'Challa
Thor Odinson
Tony Stark
Valkyrie
Vision
Wanda Maximoff
There are two characters I'll add on here BUT with a few rules.
Carol Danvers; She is a canon lesbian so I will only be writing her fics with female readers and if I see anyone asking for a Carol x Male Reader, you will be blocked from my account.
Yelena Belova; She is a canon aroace character, meaning she has absolutely no desire in dating or intimacy so all her fics with reader will be platonic, and if I see anyone ask for anything romantic, blocked.
Alright, that's pretty much it but feel free to ask away with the info I've given you.

I Love You As I love Him
Summary: you are in love with Steve Rogers but things get interesting when you confess you feelings for his best friend.
pairing: Steve x gender neutral!Reader, Bucky x gender neutral!reader
word count: 1900
a/n: here’s some angst with a happy ending :) this may be a multi part fic so let me know what you think! :)
Tumblr media
Your relationship with Steve was perfect. He loved you and in the year that you were together you still found yourself falling more and more in love with him. But a month ago you realized that you were starting to develop feelings for someone else and you had no idea what to do about them.
What's worse is that those feelings were for Bucky Barnes. His best friend! You didn't know how or when they started but you would occasionally catch yourself staring at him when he was around. You would blush anytime he smiled at you, and your heart would race if he got close enough that you could feel the heat radiating off of him. There were times when you would even think about him when you touched yourself. At one point things got so bad that you had started to actively avoid being around Bucky altogether.
And you hated these feelings that you had for him. A rush of guilt swept through your body anytime your imagination got carried away, and you felt as though you were betraying Steve and his love for you. But at the same time your feelings for Bucky felt just as natural and fulfilling as your love for Steve.
You loved Steve so much that losing him would destroy you, but you couldn't deny what you felt for Bucky either. And you knew he felt the same, which only made things that much harder. You hoped that if you ignored the feelings they would go away but they only intensified as time went on. You felt stuck and didn't know what to do. Or how to move forward without losing the love of your life.
You laid in bed staring up at the ceiling, completely consumed by thoughts of Bucky's lips on yours and how his body would feel pressed against yours, as Steve softly snored beside you. He gave a little snort and rolled over which pulled you out of your thoughts and you suddenly felt as if you were drowning. Your chest tightened with guilt and you bolted upright gasping for breath. You clutched at your chest trying to calm your breathing before you woke Steve.
"Y/N?" His concerned voice sounded a million miles away but his hand on your back brought you back to your body. "What's wrong babe?"
You buried your face in your hands as tears streamed down your cheeks. You didn't want to hurt him. You never wanted to hurt him but you couldn't keep lying to him either. It wasn't fair to him and he deserved to know that his partner had feelings for someone else. So you decided to just bite the bullet and tell him everything.
"I-" you took a shaky breath. "I think I'm in love with someone else."
When Steve didn't say anything you raised your head to try and gauge his thoughts from his expression. Your heart dropped at the look of shock that played across his face and you instantly regretted saying anything. How could you do this to him! He didn't deserve this heartbreak and you hated yourself for being the one to do it.
"Who?" He asked quietly, never taking his eyes off of you. "Who is it?" He repeated when you didn't answer right away.
"Does it matter?" You hoped to at least spare his friendship with Bucky. There was no point in ruining both of Steve's closest relationships.
Steve reached over and laced his fingers with yours. "Yes it does," he said gently but there was an edge to his tone.
"Bucky," you sniffled. "And I tried to push these feelings away, I really did! But I can't ignore them anymore and I hate lying to you. I don't want to lose you but I don't know what to do anymore." You sobbed and looked away from him fearing an explosion of hurt and anger, but instead he simply chuckled. The tears stopped almost instantly and you looked at him in confusion. Was he really laughing after hearing that the love of his life was in love with someone else?
"Yeah, that makes sense. Bucky's great and if you're going to love anyone else I'd rather it be him." Steve smiled at you and pressed your hand to his lips.
"What? I just told you that I love someone else. Aren't you worried that I might not love you anymore?" You hated asking him that question but you couldn't help yourself. You needed to know.
He chuckled again and took your other hand in his, "sweetheart, there is nothing in this universe that would ever make me doubt your love for me." He pulled you in until you were practically sitting on his lap and gingerly kissed the top of your head. "And as for not knowing what to do, why don't you just tell him? You might feel better after getting it off your chest."
You pulled back to look at him. "Are you sure?" You asked, fighting a smile that threatened to spread across your face. You had never considered the possibility that you could be happy with both of them. Was that even possible?
"I'm sure," Steve smiled and nodded. "Now can we go back to bed? Tony wants to meet in the morning for some special project he's working on." He laid back onto the bed pulling you down with him. And you both got comfortable in each other's arms.
"I'll always love you," you whispered to him as he closed his eyes.
"I know," he mumbled against your cheek, already falling asleep again.
The next day you woke up to find that Steve had already left and those feelings of guilt and doubt came back. Had you only dreamed about your talk with him last night? You could feel tears prick at the corners of your eyes as you thought about everything you said but you held them back. However, the pit in your stomach remained as you showered and got ready for the day until you found a note on the counter written to you in Steve's scrawling handwriting.
Tell Bucky how you feel, I have a hunch he feels the same way.
I love you
You smiled at the note and placed it back on the counter with your mind made up. Today, with the encouragement from your boyfriend, you were going to confess your love to his best friend.
An hour later you were standing at his front door working up the nerve to ring the doorbell. A million scenarios played out in your head as you stood there. Would he be angry that you would ever think to do something like this while you were still with Steve? Were you wrong in thinking that he loved you back? Would he not feel comfortable being with you if Steve was still in the picture? You were about to give up and leave when you heard someone behind you.
"Y/N?"
You whipped around to see Bucky standing on the sidewalk with a bag of cat food in one arm and a paper bag full of what looked like fresh produce in the other.
"What are you doing here?" He asked as he walked up the front steps to the door. He set the cat food down and fished into his pockets for his keys.
"I wanted to talk to you about something." You said nervously, stepping through the door after him. "But first, you actually do your grocery shopping at 9 in the morning?" You eyed the paper bag with a smirk and Bucky laughed as you walked with him into the kitchen.
"I like to go to the farmer's markets, they remind me of when I would go with my sister back then." He paused, "when we had the money anyway."
Your smile faded slightly at his words. You often forgot that he grew up in a completely different time than you and that he had a whole life before you met him. "Sorry I didn't mean to make fun or anything."
Bucky laughed again and shook his head. "Don't worry about it, so what's up? What did you want to talk about at 9 in the morning?" He set the two bags on the island then leaned back against the counter with his arms crossed and winked at you. He was a picture of perfection, haloed by the morning sunlight streaming through the large kitchen windows. It took a second for your brain to kick back into gear and find the words you wanted to say.
"Please don't get mad," you begged and Bucky's smile faded. He braced his hands against the counter as if preparing himself for an attack. You took a deep breath and looked down at your hands trying to push the words out.
"Y/N, what is it? Did something happen?" His tone was no longer playful. He was now alert and ready for anything.
"What? No!" You rounded the island so that you were right in front of him. "No, I'm- I think I'm in love with you." Your heart raced as you finally said the words. Steve was right you did feel better after saying them out loud but the anticipation and that came after was almost as bad.
"What about Steve?" Bucky asked after a minute of silence. He didn't sound angry but he was definitely cautious.
"We're still together. He's actually the one who said that I should tell you."
"And he's ok with this?" You could see Bucky visibly relax in front of you and you nodded waiting to see what he would do. "Thank god," he muttered before closing the space and pulled your body against his. His lips were softer than you imagined and the kiss consumed you to the point that you never wanted to stop. It felt as though the dam between you had finally broken and you were able to pour everything you were feeling into each other.
His fire met your passion with a crashing wave that almost knocked the wind out of you. In one swift motion Bucky lifted you up onto the counter without breaking the kiss. His lips never left yours while hands explored your body and eventually found their way to the button on your jeans. Bucky quickly got your jeans undone before you were hit with an annoying moment of clarity. You realized what he was doing and pulled his hands away putting a stop to everything. Bucky pulled back but didn't step away from between your thighs.
Breathing heavily, you both stared at each other as if neither of you could believe this was happening and you smiled at him running your fingers through his hair. You had wanted to do that for so long now, it was softer than you imagined. He sighed and leaned into your touch waiting to follow your lead for what to do next.
"As much as I'd love to have sex with you in your kitchen, the three of us need to sit down and have a conversation about this first."
Bucky nodded leaning forward to kiss you again. It wasn't as all consuming but your stomach still jumped into your throat. This was going to take some getting used to but in that moment you knew that you were going to enjoy your time with both your loves.

Betrayal at a superhero
Character: Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes x male reader
Universe: Somewhere in Marvel
Warnings: Sadness
The stress of the situation, made is complicated for you to actually do something. From the beginning, you were neutral, trying your hardest to keep your family together. But nothing you said or did had any effect on them.
I tried to get them to talk it out. To see that nothing is black or white, good or bad, but should always be in the grey. The real problem was the government. Not even wanting to discuss this matter. Either it was their way or none at all.
You did not put your signature under the contract either. Because your powers were just too strong to give it to a government. Not even wanting to think about, what they could and would do with them.
But all of this brought you to this airport which became a battlefield really quickly. The only thing you did was making sure, no one got hurt badly. If you needed to port them away or something soft under them, you did it. Everything just to keep all of them alive, which wasn’t an easy task.
Everything got down, when Steve and Bucky ran to a plane hidden away in hangar. Tony made a tower collapse on them. You portet yourself to them, gripping both of their arms and brought them directly in front of the plane. Seeing the gratitude in their eyes, was everything you needed.
„Be careful guys,“ you whispered to them, while giving a tight hug to both of them separately.
With that done, you teleportet to the fight again. Just to find out, that Steves group had lost. A little said, but you were aware, that one of them needed to loose to get all of this to end. It was just said, that it was the group that approved to be the governments pets.
„So the fight is over, hmm?“ Tony slowly turned in your direction. A blank mask on his normally happy face. He never looked at you like this, it made you feel strangely in danger. „What is going on?“
„Please just give up, (Y/N). We really don’t want to hurt you,“ he told you, while slowly walking into your direction with his helmet open. But every step he took, you took one back, until he stopped.
„What is the meaning of this Tony? Im not part of either of your groups, Im neutral, I helped both of you!“ But the man did not want to hear any of this.
With his arm outstretched, you finally got your answer, „You helped Steve and this alone, mades you an enemy. But you also did not put your signature under the government contract.“
You immediately knew what that meant. Even before the laser could come out of his hand, you had a mirror barrier in front of you. Instead of getting to you, the beam got into the sky, doing nothing.
Thinking that was it, you slowly angle it further down, to at some point finally get it back to him. But before it could even get to this point, a ship hard blow to your head made you unconscious. The last thing you saw, was the fast of a woman you thought was one of your best friends. Never afraid of you or your powers. But now you see her as what she is. A traitor.
Multiple times, after the initial blow to you head, you woke up, shortly out of your deep slumber. But not even long enough to realize it or open your eyes.
This all changed, as an excruciating pain, became imminent. Not on one specific point, but in your entire body. It felt like fire running trough it. Blood as thick as honey and every breath you took in, felt like swallowing glass.
„Fuck, shit, fuck… what is this?“, you murmured while waking up. The pain impossible to ignore.
The moment you came to yourself, you knew what happened. Tears streamed down, your destroyed body. The thing making your blood flow trough your body with ease, was gone. That makes you able to breath and helped you in general.
As the sleep wore off, just as the medication you were under as well, you began to scream. Loudly and nothing could stop you from it. Hours and hours later, maybe even days, someone came into your cell you could see, whenever you had enough strength to open your eyes and put medication back in your body.
This gone on for weeks and it did not get better. But the people looking after you, did not return anymore with medications. They just let you scream in agony. Until nothing in you was left. Just an empty shell. Pain was everything you knew now. After multiple more weeks, it got normal and you were able to do things.
Until Tony showed up. He looked into every cell, talked or tried to with everyone. Even with you. He stood in front of your cell, looking directly at you. You must’ve looked awful, because Tony actually was apologetic to you.
„Did you knew Tony?“, you asked him accusingly. He seemed genuinely concerned. Not knowing what you meant, he was a great actor. „They took my powers Tony. Stole them out of my body. This is the exact reason, why I did not put my signature under their contract! I knew they would make me a lab rat. And only because of them and you, I will die!“
Tony scoffed at your words, „You will not die, only because your powers are gone.“ Obviously not knowing what he was talking. You wanted to strangle him, kill him then and there.
But you couldn’t. The only thing you could do was spit at the glass, as an symbol that you were not longer friends or acquaintances for that matter.
And just as you told him. Your body slowly gave up. It had hoped, your powers would be returned, but it wasn’t the case.
You knew that Steve would come at one point, saving all of you. So you waited, holding your body barely alive, until this day came. And as he did, you were happy. The moment the super soldier had seen you, his heart dropped. He was a lot older than you, but both he and Bucky, did not get around liking you more than just a friend.
And the smart cookie you, were used it often to your advantage. You liked them too, but the did not need to know that. He scooped you up, after destroying the cell glass wall. „Hey little one,“ you whispered to you. It made you smile, as it always did. Because he means it in a more romantic way. As his little one. But he had never the guts to say it this way.
„My hero, you took your sweet time.“ Your voice hoarse, almost too quiet to hear. A weak hand carefully caressing Steves knew beard, „I like it. You should keep it.“
The moment looked strangely docile. As it was normal for you too. But Steve knew the look in your eyes. One of pain and near death. He had seen it many times in war.
„Bring me out of here, let me see the sun, please.“
And Steve took your last wish as it was. The last you two would ever do together. You were only happy, to have seen Steve one last time. As you got to the surface, Bucky was there too. He also just as Steve had seen the look in your eyes. Immediately letting everything fall down, to get to your side.
„A last time under the sun.“
„What happened?“ The question you had waited for.
„The government with Tonys help, stole my powers. My kind can’t life without our magic. So I will die and nothing could be done at this point.“ Your voice warm but sad. You had thought your life would be different. Not this dying so young was not on the plan. „I will most likely not be reborn, like the rest of my kind. Because the magic is not in me anymore. But when I die, what the people researching it don’t know, the magic will die too. And in front of my gods, it will be deiced what will happen to me.“
Your voice quietly the entire time. Smile faltering after finally feeling the pain again. But then a bright light, that gave you warmth and eased your pain, shinned down at you. A hand coming out of it. As you outstretched your arm, you realized, that neither of the men could see it. Trough their strange looks.
Out of the sudden, you kissed Steve and directly after Bucky. Before without a word, taking the hand and vanishing completely off the face of this planet. Leaving both men with the lingering feeling of your lips and Steve with the feeling of your body in his arms.

A Long, Long Time
Steve Rogers x Reader
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Prompt: Pre-serum Steve rogers you say? Honestly, I'd kill for a pre-serum soulmate au. Or just anything pre-serum cause honestly there is not enough of them.
Note: I AGREE. Something about that What-If episode set me off and I am once again reminded of my love for him (And just Steve in general). This fic will be a little with Pre-Serum Steve and a little with supersoldier Steve. There’s also some time-travel shenanigans because when is there not something like that in the fics I write lol. Takes place in an AU where everyone is happy (and alive) and lives at the Compound together.
Warnings: A little language and mention of alcohol but other than that, none?
Word Count: 4k
Reader is: Female (but I would be willing to re-edit it for male/gender neutral reader if there’s demand).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As your twenty-fifth birthday approached, you were excited, of course you were, but you were also insanely nervous to meet the person the universe decided was the one for you.
It was the day before your birthday. You woke up at the time you usually did and laid for a while, staring up at the ceiling. Inhaling a deep breath, you sat up and looked down at your forearm, where, tomorrow, there would be a name written there in black ink, just like every other person on the planet.
Someone knocked on your door.
“I’m awake.” You called back.
“Can I come in?” It was Steve.
You’d been living at the Avengers Compound for the past year and so far, you loved it. Your life as an Avenger was many things, but it was never boring. Your powers made you a valuable asset to the team, and since you’d moved in, everyone had been super nice to you, but Steve, Mr. Captain Rogers himself, had been especially kind and sweet, making sure you had everything you needed.
“Yeah, it’s unlocked.”
The door opened and Steve peeked in, a hesitant look on his face. “You doing okay?”
“Yeah, I just woke up.” You chuckled, your voice still thick with sleep. “You need something?”
“Oh! No. I just. Today’s your birthday, right?”
“No, tomorrow.”
He looked relieved at that, like you had just taken a million pounds off of his shoulders. “Oh, okay. Cool.”
“What, did you forget to get me a present?” You laughed, reaching to your nightstand for your dream journal.
“Nope.” He grinned. “I think you’re going to like it a lot, actually.”
“I look forward to it, Cap.” You saluted and his eyes softened. “Do we have training today?”
“No. Figured we could all use a day off.” There was something hiding in his gaze that you didn’t quite catch, couldn’t quite identify. It was like he knew something you didn’t. “You have any plans?”
“Nope.” You opened the cover of your journal and started scribbling down what you remembered of your dreams.
“You journal?” Steve asked, curious.
“Yeah, I like to write my dreams down.” You replied, smiling softly. “Most of them are weird, but I think some of them would make great books. You know, Twilight was inspired by a dream.”
“And Twilight is…?”
“Oh, right.” You chuckled, shaking your head. “Vampire movie from about 2008. It’s based on a series of books. They’re pretty bad, admittedly, but it was a huge thing in pop culture for a good while.”
“Should I add it to my list?”
“If you really want to. But I feel like you’d probably like the Hunger Games more.”
“Hmm, good to know. Thanks.”
“Yeah, of course.” You smiled, looking back up at him.
You had to admit it, Steve was pretty darn handsome. That strong jawline, the muscles, the pretty blue eyes. You heard it everywhere. Steve was the heartthrob of the country. Every woman wanted him, but that didn’t change the fact that you were pretty sure his soulmate was long gone by now. Whoever they were, they had probably been from his time. It was sad. Someone as nice as him deserved to be happy, to have time with the person the universe had set aside for him, and yet, here he was without them, a thick black band around his arm to cover up their name.
“(Y/N)?” He asked, snapping you from your thoughts.
“Yeah?”
“If you need anything today, let me know, alright?” He smiled softly before adding, “It is almost your birthday, after all.”
You smiled back. “Will do.”
***
You’d ended up spending the day with Natasha and Wanda at the mall, shopping around without any real rhyme or reason. Wanda was very excited to find out who your soulmate was and they were both very supportive of you, especially given how nervous you were about the situation.
And once you were done getting some new clothes (with Tony’s credit card, of course), you all went back to the Compound. You unpacked your new things, and then got dressed in your pajamas. It was late, and you were exhausted. The longer you stayed up, the longer you delayed the inevitable reveal, and thinking about it too much made you nervous, so you just decided to get to sleep sooner than later.
It was once you were just about to climb into bed that there was another knock at your door.
“It’s open!” You called, and in came Steve for the second time of the day. “Oh, hey.”
“Hi.” He chuckled. He seemed nervous, although you weren’t sure why.
“Everything alright, Steve?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. I actually came in here to check on you. Wanda said you were…worried.”
“Not worried, exactly, just a bit nervous, I guess.” You hugged your arms around your frame and bit your lip, looking up at the super soldier standing in front of you. “I don’t know what to expect and that intimidates me.”
“Mmm.” He hummed, nodding. “That’s probably the most intimidating part. But it’s all uphill from here, I promise.” His eyes sparkled when he said it. Steve didn’t talk about his soulmate much, but from the look on his face alone, you could tell he had been deeply in love with them.
“Any advice?”
“Well, whoever they are, they’re a lucky, lucky duck. You don’t need to worry about anything. It’ll all work out.” He said it like he was certain. Like somehow he knew what would happen in the morning when suddenly your life was turned on its head and you had to venture out to find your other half.
“And if they don’t like me…?”
He scoffed. “That’s impossible. They’re going to love you. So much. I promise.”
You looked up at him for a long moment before taking a step forward and wrapping your arms around him. He didn’t hesitate to embrace you, a hand raising to gently stroke your head. He exhaled a long breath, like he’d been holding it in for a long, long time.
“Thank you. I really needed that.” You said softly, relishing in the warmth of the hug.
“Of course.” He pulled away and looked down at you, that knowing sparkle in his eye once more. “See you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.” You agreed.
“And happy birthday, (Y/N).”
***
“Ma’am? Are you alright? Ma’am?” The voice sounded far away. You were pretty sure you were still dreaming. Whoever they were, they sounded close. You opened your eyes slowly and immediately became aware of the pounding pain in your head.
“Ow, oh my God.” You reached up and felt there, but it didn’t feel like you were bleeding or anything.
“Ma’am?”
You froze for a second, slowly looking up at the figure standing above you, confusion written all over his familiar features. It took you a long moment to put the pieces together. You were on a porch somewhere in what appeared to be New York, but it was…different. A lot different than the parts of the city you knew. Alright, it had to be a dream.
You looked up at the man standing above you and did a double-take. But no, it was him. It was a tiny, skinny version of Steve. Your eyebrows furrowed and you sat up slowly, staring at him before saying softly, “Steve?”
His mouth opened and then shut again and he made a face of confusion, like he was trying to place where he knew you from, but he didn’t know you yet, and wouldn’t know you for several more years, to say the least. “Do I know you?”
“It’s complicated.” You exhaled. “Can we go inside? You’re going to need to sit down for this.”
Dumbfounded, Steve nodded and you stood up from the porch, only to find that he was at your eye level when you did. Weird. He led you into the small apartment and you looked around. It was quaint. There was an easel in the corner of the room and…Bucky Barnes sitting on the couch? You stared at him for a good, long moment, a shiver running down your spine.
“Who’s the dame?”
“About to find that out myself.” He chuckled, leading you into the living room. “Buck, could you give us a minute?”
“I’ll be in the kitchen.” Bucky got up and walked to the other half of their tiny one-bedroom.
You sat down on the couch and so did he. The silence was thick. You thought for several moments. You weren’t quite sure how you had ended up in the 1940s, nor why and you had no idea how to find either of those answers. You looked down at your hands and it was then that your gaze finally landed on the writing on your wrist. And then everything made sense.
“What’s the date today?”
“It’s July 4th, why?”
“Well, happy birthday, first of all. And second of all,” you held up your wrist so he could read it. Steve’s eyes went wide and he stared at the three words written neatly on your skin in his own handwriting.
Steven Grant Rogers.
“You’re my…” He looked at you for a long time, his eyes wide. He hastily undid the cuff around his wrist and held it out to you, your own name written there.
“I’m your soulmate.” You said certainly. It hit you like a truck, then. The weird look on your Steve’s face, the way he was so certain that everything would work out. It was because he had already lived through this. And that meant that in all the time he’d known you, he’d been hiding his mark not because his soulmate had died, but instead because you were his soulmate and you didn’t know it yet.
Strange.
Steve exhaled a long breath, really taking you in. Once again, he had a million stars in his eyes. He let out a whispered, “Wow,” as tears began to form.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m just overwhelmed.” He chuckled, sniffling as a tear ran down his cheek. “I’ve just, I’ve got a lot of health problems, so I wasn’t sure if I’d ever…meet you. And you’re here and you’re great and I just…”
That brought tears to your eyes. “Oh, Steve…” You pulled him into your arms and he didn’t hesitate to surrender to your embrace, his arms wrapping tight around you and holding you close.
“I have to ask, though…How did you know?”
“I don’t know if you can tell from these clothes,” you motioned down to the t-shirt and sweatpants you were wearing, “but I’m not from around here, exactly.”
“I kind of thought so, but I didn’t want to be rude.” He smiled softly.
“I’m from a really long time in the future. It’s hard to explain why or how, and I’m not really sure how I got here, to be honest, but I’m glad I am.” You sighed. “I just don’t know how to get home.”
“Am I there? Where you’re from?”
“You are. It’s complicated. We’re really good friends and…when I get back, I’m sure we’ll probably be even more than that.” You smiled, shaking your head. “I can’t believe I didn’t put the pieces together sooner.”
“(Y-Y/N)?” Steve asked.
“Yeah, Steve?”
“Let me take you out today. Show you a good time here before you have to go back.” He took your hand and carefully laced his fingers through your own.
You smiled. “I’d like that.”
“Not to eavesdrop, lovebirds — congratulations, by the way — but if you’re going to take her out, we’re going to need to find her some clothes that aren’t so…‘not from around here.’” Bucky leaned in the doorway.
“Yeah, I thought the same thing.”
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll call one of my girls and we’ll get her squared away. Sit tight.”
“Thanks, Bucky.” You said, chuckling when his eyes widened after you addressed him. “I know you, too. From the, uh, future.”
“Weird…” Bucky decided.
“Long story?” Steve asked, studying the look on your face.
“Very.” You agreed. After staring at him for another long moment, you pulled him back into your arms again, exhaling a long breath before whispering, “I’m so glad it’s you…”
***
“Wow.” You stared at yourself in the mirror, studying the way Bucky’s, ahem, lady friend, had curled your hair, done your makeup. You did a little twirl and relished in the way the skirt of your dress twirled. “I think it suits me.”
“I agree. Blue is a good color on you.” Steve was sitting in a chair at the edge of the room. “Although, I’m sure they’re all good colors on you, doll.”
You felt the heat rise to your cheeks. “Thanks.”
“I mean it.” He stood up and walked to you, slipping one of his hands into each of yours and staring into your eyes. “You look great.”
“But do I look believable?”
“No one is gonna think you’re a time traveler. Well, unless you tell them.” Bucky said. “Maybe don’t do that anymore.”
“Yeah, I wasn’t planning to.” You chuckled and gave Steve’s hands a squeeze. “Where to first, soulmate?”
His cheeks reddened as soon as you said the word. “Well, I was thinking we could go to my favorite little diner down the street to grab something for lunch, and then maybe we could take a walk through the park, catch a movie, and then go out for drinks tonight?”
“What, you aren’t gonna take her dancing?” Bucky teased, ruffling Steve’s hair under a large hand. “Show the girl a good time?”
“I would if I didn’t have two left feet.” Steve chuckled, a sheepish smile on his face. He looked at you, waiting for some kind of response. “How does that sound?”
“It sounds like a great time, Steve.”
He smiled. “Good.”
The two of you left the apartment not long after that, and walked side by side towards the diner. Your hands were swinging in the space between you and your hand brushed Steve’s once, twice, a third time, and then you slipped your hand into his, intertwining your fingers.
You caught him smile out of the corner of your eye. “Is this okay?”
“Yeah, of course it’s okay.” He grinned and chuckled to himself. “I just…I didn’t expect today to be this amazing, but it keeps getting better.”
“Well, I hope that trend continues.”
Steve gave your hand a squeeze. “I have a feeling it will.”
When the two of you finally got to the diner, a little bell rang over your heads and you got seated at a booth by the window. The two of you ordered drinks and you skimmed the menu while you waited.
“So, tell me about yourself.” You said, resting your chin against your fist and looking up at Steve. You studied the way his blue, blue eyes flicked up to your own and the blush that covered his cheeks shortly thereafter.
“You probably know a lot of it already.” He chuckled. “Unless we don’t talk a lot?”
“We talk quite a bit, but I still want to know about this you. Here and now.”
“I like art. Drawing and painting and stuff.” He said. “I don’t think I’m all that good, but it’s fun.”
“See, that I didn’t know.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I didn’t know you were into art.”
“I could, uh, show you sometime.” He offered.
“I’d like that.” You smiled. “What else?”
“I like to read. I like going to baseball games with Bucky. One time he took me to Coney Island. I don’t do well on rollercoasters, but other than throwing up on one of them, I had a pretty good time.”
“I don’t really like roller coasters either,” you admitted, scrunching your nose.
“Enough about me, tell me about you.” Steve nudged, his hand slowly moving towards yours. “How do we know each other?”
“We’re…coworkers, I guess you could say. We met about a year back and now we live in the same…apartment complex? I’m sorry for being so vague, I just—”
“Don’t want to give it away, yeah, I get it.” He nodded, understandingly.
“You took me under your wing as soon as I moved in and really made me feel welcome. I appreciate it a lot.” You took a sip of your drink. “We’ve been through a lot together already, and I’m sure it’s just the tip of the iceberg.”
“Mmm…” Steve nodded. “I know I just met you, but I’m really glad you and I are close. Well, will be close.” He paused before chuckling and shaking his head. “There’s still some little voice in the back of my head telling me all of this is just some amazing dream.”
“Believe me, I understand.” You chuckled, tucking a piece of curled hair back behind your ear.
***
Once the two of you were finished up at the diner, you took a walk through the park. It was gorgeous out, a bright, sunny, warm summer afternoon. Several couples were strolling down the paths, hand in hand, and you were one of them, your hand held tight in Steve’s, his thumb gently stroking the back of yours.
You went to the theater and caught a movie together. It was strange, to say the very least, watching a “brand new” movie that in your normal life, you would only be able to catch on TV Land or maybe at a throwback night at the drive-in.
And then, once the movie was out and the sun was setting, you went to a bar, where Steve ordered each of you a drink. You took a sip of yours, something sweet, and smiled at him across the table.
“So, how’s your birthday been, birthday boy?” You asked coyly.
“The best I’ve had so far,” he replied, his eyes sparkling. The sparkle faded, however, when his expression grew somber. He hesitated, but then asked, “Okay, I have to know…How long do I have to wait to see you again?”
You exhaled a long sigh, biting your lip. If you told him the truth, he might ask questions you couldn’t tell him the answers to. But if you didn’t, you’d be lying to your soulmate.
“I’ll be honest, Steve, it’s…it’s a pretty long time.” You thought for a long moment before continuing, “I…I can’t really tell you why. It’s all really complicated, and if I tell you too much, it might not happen the way it’s supposed to.”
“Mmm…” Steve nodded and took a sip of his drink. Once he set down the glass, he reached across the table and took your hand. “Well, however long it is,” he looked straight into your eyes and a chill ran down your spine, “It’ll be worth it. I promise.”
You blushed at that. “I hope so.”
“There you two are! I was wondering which bar you’d wandered into!” Bucky was, apparently, already slightly intoxicated as he approached you and Steve with a date of his own. “How was your day on the town, lovebirds?”
“Spectacular.” You replied. “I wish there was more time to soak it in.”
“New York sure is something, huh?” Bucky’s date asked, giggling innocently. If only she knew the half of it.
“Yeah, you could say that.” You laughed and tucked a piece of hair behind your ear.
“You guys wanna sit with us?” Steve asked.
“If you don’t mind too much, punk.” Bucky grinned.
Steve got up and switched sides of the booth so he was sitting next to you instead of across from you.
“Did you give the lady her dance, Stevie?” Bucky asked, smirking.
“Not yet.” Steve chuckled. “We’ll see. The asthma makes it a bit…difficult.”
“Easy. Just wait until the band plays something slow,” Bucky’s date pointed out.
“There you go!” Bucky raised his glass to his lips. “Great idea, Maggie.”
“Glad to be of service.”
And so, the four of you chatted until the band started to play something sweet and slow. Steve looked at you for approval and you nodded. He held out his hand and you slipped yours into it, letting him lead you out onto the floor with the other couples.
Steve blushed, flustered, and he looked at you before saying, “I don’t know how to do this.”
“It’s easy.” You promised, guiding one of his hands to your waist and holding the other. “That’s it. And then we just move to the music.”
“Cool.” He chuckled, swaying in time with you. “Hey, uh, (Y/N), I need you to know…I had a really, really good time today. You’re everything I’ve ever wanted in a soulmate and I’m so excited to spend the rest of my life with you someday.”
“I’m glad I met your expectations.” You smiled, tugging him a bit closer.
“No, you exceeded them. You’re better than anything I could have imagined. I’m one lucky duck.” He paused, and his expression fell a little. “I know I’m a lot. I have a lot of problems and they might complicate things sometimes, but…”
“Steve, you’re perfect.” You shook your head and leaned forward, resting your forehead against his. “The universe gave you to me for a reason and I’m so, so glad it did. You’re amazing. I can’t think of anyone better to spend the rest of my life with.”
He was quiet for a moment before whispering, “Can I please kiss you, doll?”
You answered him with your lips.
***
The next morning, you woke up feeling something akin to the worse hangover you’d ever had in your entire life. You groaned and rolled over. According to your alarm clock, it was about noon. Seeing your nightstand caused you to sober up a bit.
You were back at the Compound.
Your heart raced and you sat up, pulling up the sleeve of your…nightgown?
You paused.
Shit.
That meant it hadn’t been some crazy dream. You felt the fabric of the nightgown, and sure enough, it wasn’t similar to anything you owned. In fact, it was the one Bucky loaned to you, another relic from one of his many, many hookups.
You pulled the sleeve up slowly, revealing the letters on your wrist one at a time, but they hadn’t changed. They still spelled out the name of the one and only Captain America.
You hopped out of bed and rushed to get dressed, brushing your teeth at lightspeed before speeding out of your bedroom and rushing to the kitchen. Steve was sitting there, a sandwich on his plate and a nervous look on his face.
Oh, he knew alright. Something told you he had known all along.
“Steve!”
He whipped around at the sound of your voice, his eyes wide. “Happy birthday. Uh. How did you sleep?”
You froze. “Steve, I—” You exhaled. “Can we talk?”
“Yeah.” He nodded, following you to the nearest conference room, where you locked the door behind the two of you.
Before you could even say anything, he blurted, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, I just didn’t know how, and—”
“Steve.” You quieted him with a look, shaking your head and chuckling. “It was real, then? I’m not crazy?”
“It was real,” he confirmed. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of fabric, which, when he handed it to you, you realized it was your Star Wars t-shirt, about 70 years older than you had last seen it.
You stared at it for a long time. “Holy shit.”
“Yeah…” He reached up to rub the back of his neck. “I didn’t know what else to do with it, so I just…held onto it. For a while, it fit me, and then I, uh, had my growth spurt.”
“Mmm…” You hummed, thinking.
It was quiet for a moment, before he asked quietly, “Are we gonna be okay?”
Your heart just about melted. “Of course we’re gonna be okay.” You stood on your toes and pulled him down into a hug. “You’re my soulmate, Steve. Nothing is ever going to change that. Not time, not space, not even a super soldier serum.”
Steve’s arms wrapped tightly and protectively around your frame, causing butterflies to float around in your stomach. He sighed and said, “I missed you so much, doll. Which is…silly because you’ve been here, you didn’t go anywhere, but—”
You laughed, “I get it.”
You pulled back, studying his face, a hand reaching up to stroke his cheek. And then, for the first time since 1943, Steve Rogers got to kiss his soulmate again.
