George & Tammy & the Maggots
youtube
I'm not one to often offer up yet another internet opinion about yet another streaming series, as we have way too many of both.
I will quickly state that I thought the recent George & Tammy biopic (Showtime) was beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and while apparently based on daughter Georgette Jones' book, The Three of Us, wisely paired the story down to the titular stars' love-ish story. The hazy cinematography, consistently vulnerable closeups, and lack of overdeveloping their pre-hookup life left it all as a narcotized dream -- not unlike how those two drifted through their beautifully damaged artistic and romantic life.
Unlike nearly every streaming series I have ever seen, I did not think George & Tammy was too long, though of course it could've used some editing here or there.
To a more pertinent point of my usual pursuits, one of the series top visual scenes was also an incredible use of a classic "Killed By Death" punk song -- something that happens numerically in the exact opposite proportion to how many goddamn streaming series are out there.
In the opening scene of the final episode, Tammy (played by Jessica Chastain) is seen running through woods and up to a stranger's house, saying something about how some men kidnapped and beat her. All the while the scuzzed-out keys, guitars, and cheekily sneer of The Maggots' 1980 SF punk classic, "Let's Get, Let's Get Tammy Wynette", chases down Tammy too.
Tumblr media
It's the kind of jarring surprise the series definitely needed at that point (it is a mostly sad, morose tale and telling), and nearly knocked me off my couch. That, along with the generally excellent use of music all along showed this series had a stronger clue than most TV/streaming productions that still somehow rely on boomer-era hits or obvious current pop.
The story arc was at 1978, not only when Wynette was ensconced in the worst drug and husband abusive moment of her life, but also right when punk rock and a host of other modern musics were making her music irrelevant. The series did not delve into many pop cultural connections like that. Again, it was probably smart to stay in the insular worlds of the pair's personal heartbreak. But simply using The Maggots' track was a wild way to have the sonic world that was developing far past them creep into their dark bubble.
youtube
Now to my ears and assumptions, since I first heard "Let's Get, Let's Get Tammy Wynette" in the early '90s, I was a party to the era that critiqued the mid-century mores that Wynette's signature song -- the seemingly non-feminist statement, "Stand By Your Man" -- espoused. Right up to Hillary Clinton's famous 1992 supposed putdown of said song, Wynette seemed a relic, someone to be scoffed at, and The Maggots song did that most viciously, if underground.
I've always heard it as one of those proudly rude punk sentiments of the early days that aimed to severely offend, sarcastically suggesting killing the "Stand By Your Man" lady -- with a female singer no less, which gave an otherwise obscure, one-off 7" punk single more heft.
I'm old enough to remember, circa Clinton's comment, fans and industry types trying to defend Wynette and "Stand By Your Man," usually with pretty toothless justifications. To me, the song might as well have been from 100 years ago, and Clinton's comment was a societal no brainer. If anything, it seemed irrelevant to reference some old song; not to mention I kind of thought that taking that tune at complete face value -- when sung with such sad desperation -- seemed to be condescending to people's ability to digest the layers of an old pop song.
I never really knew much about the story of Wynette's involvement in her 1978 "kidnapping," which was later revealed as a hoax that her fifth fucking horrible husband, and songwriter of some of her biggest hits, George Richey (played creepily by Steve Zahn in the series) concocted to not only cover up having beat the hell out of her, but to then use it as hype for an upcoming tour. (Supposedly, details are still sketchy to this day, and disagreements about the story between Wynette's family and Richey remained past his death in 2010.)
The series does a good job of re-contextualizing Wynette -- historically a pop culture icon of spousal subjugation -- not only as a victim of patriarchal strictures, but as a drug addict making the usual fucked-up decisions.
In one quick small scene, as Wynette is heading through a throng of fans towards the tour bus, one female fan asks if women should really be like her songs, and always support their man, to which Wynette responds, "They're just pretty love songs, darlin', I wouldn't think about them too much." Chastain offers some brief, amazing facial expressions which show the many layers the better of all those depressing, drunken, violent, seemingly submissive country classics can contain, and that her thirst for stardom via repression has her questioning the same as that fan.
youtube
In its gauzy way, George & Tammy does make an argument for the complex, unexplainable, in-the-moment emotions of many old country songs, while not letting Wynette off for her terrible choices, of which there were just as many made as the legendarily self-immolating George Jones -- played, it must be said, incredibly by Michael Shannon who, admittedly, I'd watch read the phonebook.
Then I see this today, a comment below the above YouTube clip of "Let's Get, Let's Get Tammy Wynette":
"Found this post by one of The Maggots members: "yes the original maggots did put out an apparently highly collectable record in 1980 called "lets get, lets get, tammy wynette!!!" a song i wrote from the kidnappers point of view, after a bizarre "kidnapping" incident in the late 70s (later found to be an elaborate hoax concocted by tammy to cover up for her abusive husband kicking her ass...) no wonder she was pissed when this guy i knew asked her to sign a copy of it at an autograph session at marriots great america amusement park...she actually threw his record and started screaming, and they escorted him out, sans autograph...."
Nevertheless, be it feminist punk screed or silly playacting, whoever chose that Maggots track and got it into a major streaming series should be given an award, and should call me soon so we can collaborate on getting better songs into streaming shows. I mean how many more times do we have to hear "White Room," "I Feel Good," or "Firework"?!

Tumblr media
Gulas Re-elected Board Chairman $500,000 in Grants Announced
FISHERS, Ind.- AHEPA Senior Living held elections for board of directors’ officers and announced grant distributions totaling $500,000 at its annual meeting, July 10 and 11, 2024, in Nashville, Tenn.
The AHEPA Senior Living Board of Directors unanimously reelected Attorney Ike Gulas, Birmingham, Ala., to a three year term as chairman. Gulas has served on ASL’s board for more than 25 years.
“The confidence bestowed on me by my fellow board members is humbling. I consider myself fortunate to work with AHEPA Senior Living as it furthers its mission of providing dignified affordable senior housing and quality aging services to those who need it.” Gulas said. “Our board looks forward to working with President and CEO Steve Beck, and the executive team, to meet our mission and overcome any challenges that come our way.”
“Ike’s contributions as a board member for decades have been critical to our position in the affordable multifamily housing markets,” Beck said. “We look forward to working with Ike and the board of directors, who continue to show a high level of commitment energy, and passion for our mission.”
$500,000 in Grant Awards: Supporting Our Communities
The Board of Directors also was pleased to announce the distribution of $500,000 in grants to nonprofit charitable and service organizations.
“Congratulations to this year’s round of grantees,” Board Chairman Gulas said. “We are proud to support these worthy mission-driven organizations. It’s a privilege to be able to partake in charitable giving, both at the national and local level. In doing so, we enhance vital services and programs that support and strengthen our local communities and the greater society.”
Since 1996, AHEPA Senior Living has supported nonprofits to an amount that exceeds $10 million.
A Salute to Youth: Emerging Leaders Hosted
AHEPA Senior Living also hosted the Greek American community’s emerging leaders as two youth service organizations, Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena, the Junior Orders of AHEPA, held their annual meetings. AHEPA Senior Living presented each organization with a $10,000 grant toward each of their missions. An “Evening at the Nashville Parthenon” served as the perfect backdrop for a kick-off celebration of Greek culture with music, dancing, and food that set the stage for an unforgettable weekend.
“These young men and women are our future leaders and for us to be afforded the opportunity to host them is a pleasure.” Gulas said. “We look forward to many of them joining us on our boards as they settle into their career paths.”
AHEPA Senior Living Podcast Launched
In addition, the company announced the launch of its video podcast, titled, “AHEPA Senior Living.”
According to Beck, the podcast will be a dynamic platform dedicated to highlighting the importance and impact of affordable independent senior living. The first episode features a conversation with Board Chairman Gulas, who shares his perspective about AHEPA Senior Living as well as his personal family’s history of community involvement.

In addition to Gulas, all AHEPA Senior Living Board of Directors officers earned reelection. They are: Vice Chairman John Zourzoukis, Columbia, S.C.; Secretary Demetrios “Jimmy” Makris, New Port Richey, Fla.; and Treasurer Michael Pihakis, Bridgeville, Pa. Gulas also appointed board member, Attorney Christ Coumanis, Daphne, Ala., as counsel to the board.
Executive Committee Members
Nine members comprise the Executive Committee. They are: Konstantine “Gus” Angelo, Houston; Mark Bullock, Albuquerque, N.M.; Christ Coumanis, Daphne, Ala.; Dr. John Grossomanides, Westerly, R.I.; Angelo Kostarides, Indianapolis, Ind.; John Miller, Nashville, Tenn.; George Nardone, Syracuse, N.Y.; Ellen Platis, Mobile, Ala.; and Charrie Regopoulos, Springsboro, Ohio.
Terry Mitchell, of Niantic, Conn., and a pioneer of AHEPA’s national housing program, is an Honorary Executive Board Member.
The Board of Directors is comprised of 38 members, each one representing one or more of the 87 affordable senior housing communities administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 202 Housing for the Elderly Program.
Meet Ike Gulas
Gulas is an attorney with Morgan & Morgan, America’s largest injury law firm. A 1989 graduate of Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, Gulas has been practicing law for 30 plus years. He is a member of the Birmingham Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Southern Trial Lawyer Association, the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice, and the National Trial Lawyers Association where he has been selected as one of the top 100 lawyers in Alabama. In 1998, Gulas founded The Ike Gulas Law Firm, P.C., for which over its 20 years in existence he represented thousands of clients who suffered injuries caused by pharmaceuticals and defective medical devices. As a 40-plus-year member in AHEPA he distinguished himself by serving two terms as its National President representing its 500-plus chapters throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
When asked about his service to AHEPA Senior Living, a non-profit corporation, Gulas cited one of his father’s memorable teachings about always giving back.
“I have been involved in AHEPA Senior Living’s mission since developing the 72-unit HUD Senior Apartment complex in Hoover, Alabama, 27 years ago. As I witnessed my own father’s aging and the issues faced by our seniors it made my resolve even greater to work to provide solutions to our seniors. I am honored to serve such a worthwhile cause.”

The NatureCoaster.com Story for our Ten-Year Anniversary
Tumblr media
I was stuck in a chair. I could get up, but I wasn’t supposed to. I was instructed to sit and heal from the extensive wounds I had suffered on August 26, 2013, exactly one week past my 51st birthday. Now, we are celebrating ten years of NatureCoaster on April 6 and I hope you will join us. Event details are at the end of the story. Meanwhile, this is the condensed version of how NatureCoaster.com came to be. I had been in an induced coma in the UF Shands ICU and Burn Units for months and was “sprung” just before Thanksgiving, at which time I was sent to an excellent rehab hospital in Brooksville. At least I was on home turf while I relearned how to walk, pick things up and move them where I wanted, and how to use the bathroom without help. Still, I didn’t want to sit in a chair too long. I wanted to do something. While talking with a very good friend she suggested, “You should take the magazine online. Everybody loved it!” It is now early 2014 and I got a spiffy laptop computer, beginning my future
creating NatureCoaster.com. It began with learning WordPress and using the free template of the year, Magazine, and free web hosting to recreate the very popular, but not profitable “Travelhost of the Nature Coast” that I had published from 2004-2010 when the Gulf Coast oil spill put the final nails in the coffin of that business. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve8NjnBAGH0 NatureCoaster.com is Born I got a call from a former colleague, asking me to be part of a Familiarization (FAM) Tour of Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco counties with Robin Draper, creator of Authentic Florida. We visited parks, ate in some of the best local restaurants, and took a wonderful boat tour together with the Tourism agencies for each County. One night, we stayed at one of the cabins on Chinsegut Hill together, just Robin and me. “You need an email list! That’s how you grow,” she told me. She also gave me her phone number and a LOT of encouragement. Robin became my mentor and without her, NatureCoaster wouldn’t have made it to the end of our first year. In April 2014, I interviewed Howard Bellamy for our first feature story. He was a true gentleman and shared stories with me of growing up in a different time on Florida’s Nature Coast. I still remember him telling me about Frances (he and his brother, David, called their mom by her first name while she helped them negotiate the music business of the 1970s and beyond) and how she and their dad tamed the land in Darby and grew their cattle business. David and Howard Bellamy at their family ranch in the 1970s. Image courtesy of The Bellamy Brothers. He also told me about going fishing in Port Richey, jumping in the Weeki Wachee River, the origins of the San Antonio Rattlesnake Festival, and more. We sent out our first newsletter. Were there 50 readers? About this time, I realized that if this was going to be my career, I would need to have income, so I began a local business directory. This required paid hosting and an investment in software. I began searching for the domain name. The one I wanted, NatureCoasting, wasn’t available. I liked the action verb idea, but compromise had to be made, so NatureCoaster it is. I charged $36.50 to be in the directory because I figured it had to be worth at least 10 cents a day to a local business. Several of the customers from the printed magazine invested in this, giving me enough hope to keep going. Some wanted to pay more, so I made a “top-of-the-directory” position for $100/year. Friends and Partners make NatureCoaster.com Grow Our newest NatureCoasters at Art in the Park. Image by Diane Bedard. Over the years, so many people came alongside us to bring us to where we are today: More than 245,000 unique visitors to the site in 2023 and growing! I got freelance jobs from former customers and new customers. I was able to work on a video series with Shannon Burns and Steve Sofcheck called “Gems of the Nature Coast,” writing and editing half-hour segments. These Gems aired on the Citrus County Key TV station only and could be seen on YouTube. I worked in trade for a commercial being made for NatureCoaster.com and a media schedule on the station. The commercial we created won second place at the Florida Outdoor Writer’s Association Excellence in Craft awards that year. Greatest Hits 106 management, Steve and Stephanie Schurdell met with me and agreed to sponsor our calendar of events with radio spots. Their support was instrumental in getting the word out that a digital magazine was available for organizations throughout the Nature Coast to add their events to, connecting the region. Captain "Shell" Marinaro, Marla Chancey, Robin Draper, and Diane Bedard enjoying the Gulf of Mexico on their way back to Gill Dawg's Marina. When COVID came, the events came to a standstill, and the radio stations and I agreed to stop the sponsorship until there were events to promote again. When the time came to revisit, NatureCoaster.com was so strong that I never reached back out to them. Mentors and Friends Contribute to NatureCoaster.com Robin encouraged me to join the Florida Outdoor Writers Association. She encouraged me to enter their Excellence in Craft Awards and I actually won a couple of awards in 2017. Again in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. I met Sally White at my first conference, and we became fast friends, both serving on the Board of Directors. Meanwhile, Robin retired and found Melanie Lentz-Janney to take on the next chapter of Authentic Florida. Melanie Lentz-Janney, publisher of AuthenticFlorida.com, and Diane Bedard, publisher of NatureCoaster.com proudly display their 2018 Sunshine Blog Awards at FLBlogCon. Robin also brought me to Florida BlogCon, where I met hundreds of bloggers from around Florida, as well as major advertisers who recognized blogging and social media as viable promotional channels. One of my connections from that organization places all our community news on the site as well as helps with blessing and editing events that are added to the NatureCoaster Calendar: Meagan Goepferich. A writer, Jacqueline Bodnar, got my name from FLBlog Con and reached out to me about being a part of her book, Blogging for Bucks. NatureCoaster.com is Chapter Five! Sally White has won many writing awards and has become a regular contributor to NatureCoaster.com. I love her writing, and as NatureCoaster has grown, I had to take on more management responsibilities. Sally publishes Florida for Families and she and her husband, Chef Randal White, are part owners in Remington Steakhouse at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida. One of those responsibilities was best outsourced
website management. Delegation Makes NatureCoaster.com Better In the first few years, every time I had an idea of ways to grow NatureCoaster’s content or usability, I ended up working on a WordPress project that came with a lot of challenges, so I would be frustrated, cussing, and pounding away. One day my husband suggested I contact Stefen Phelps, now co-founder of Kelp Creative Agency. At that time, Stefen was coding websites for a well-known web agency in Tampa and he took me on as a freelance project on his own time. Whew! Then Stefen wanted to meet. “This is my friend, Luke Kenney, a graphic designer. We want to start our own agency in Brooksville and we want to have you as our first customer,” Stefen said as we sipped coffees in downtown Brooksville. They named the agency KELP and NatureCoaster.com was their first customer. They took our homemade logo and made it professional, providing us with a level of professionalism rarely seen. They understood and believed in our mission to connect our readers with the “Best of Florida’s Nature Coast” and they have been true partners in making us who we are today. Come to the NatureCoaster.com Ten-Year Celebration and Help a Great Cause In February of this year, I realized that April marked the tenth anniversary of NatureCoaster. It seemed appropriate to have a celebration. On April 6, 2024, please join us for our party. Every business, nonprofit, tourism agency, events planner, or reader that has been a part of this journey is an integral part of our success. Please join us for the NatureCoaster.com Ten-Year Celebration to benefit the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation on Saturday, April 6 from 2-9 pm at the Masaryk Winery and Upicktopia farm, 19125 Phillips Road, Masaryktown, FL 34604. War Games: Tactical Media surveys the longstanding and tangled relationship between videogames and the US military. The first videogame, Spacewar!, was created by computer researchers at MIT in 1962 using nascent computer technology funded by the US Department of Defense. Since then, the commercial videogame industry has grown in tandem with—and partly thanks to—the US military’s development of computer and digital technologies.
Unsurprisingly, military-themed videogames have come to dominate the gaming industry and gamer culture. The ubiquity of these games has facilitated the US military’s public relations and recruitment efforts. Games such as America’s Army and Call of Duty present glamorized depictions of armed combat and military culture that appeal to gamers, including young ones. Ironically, enlistees are trained for actual warfare using simulations that are nearly indistinguishable from the games they grew up playing. The line between “real” and “virtual” combat has become blurred. As war is conflated with fun and games, moral and ethical concerns are eclipsed.
This exhibition invites you to explore this history through an extensive media archive. Watch interviews with game developers and military personnel, view footage of soldiers training in cutting-edge VR gaming simulations and see how the military uses esports tournaments to insinuate itself into youth culture. Examine the connection between videogames and the military in the popular imagination through vintage and contemporary game commercials, user-generated content from social media and excerpts from Hollywood movies. Play examples of military-themed videogames including the latest entry in the blockbuster Call of Duty franchise and Discharged, an artist-made arcade game that critiques the US military’s use of videogames to recruit teens. Exhibition is intended for mature audiences; viewer discretion is advised.

Republicans are set to vote on abortion-related legislation on the heels of a brutal election in the wake of the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Even former President Donald Trump, who stacked the court with anti-abortion conservatives, tried to dodge responsibility for backing failed candidates by blaming the "abortion issue." House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said that the Wednesday vote showed Republicans "following through on promises" made during the campaign but Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., expressed concerns that the party's stance is largely symbolic and threatens to alienate millions of voters." *** The largest online progressive news show in the world.
