Starlight - B.B (2/6)
Summary: Mysterious, but life changing things always happen if you just let life take its course â you decided to try it for once. (Modern AU!Reader/Bucky Barnes).
Prompt: Emily Dickinson: XXI
Masterlist
Part 1Â
A/N: This is for @abovethesmokestacks âs Summer Writing Challenge. Â
Feedback is always welcomed.
Steve and Bucky are sitting not to far away from his apartment building in a diner that they have been visiting since they were kids, but itâs not the same -- it has never been the same since Bucky came back. However, it isnât about that today. For one, Bucky keeps talking about a young woman he had meet in the little stargazing meetings he liked to go to when he was having a good day. Steve couldnât help but grin behind his coffee cup as his old friend went on over someone so excited about the stars just as him.
âThatâs great, Buck,â Steve nods, while taking a bit of his breakfast, âThink youâll see her again?â
âMaybe, Iâm not sure,â Bucky shrugs before taking a sip of his coffee, as he tries to forget those bright eyes and a cheeky smile for what actually he came to talk with Steve about, as he pushes the documents he brought over to the blondeâs side of the table. Â
For now, Steve moves from teasing Bucky about this mysterious office worker to looking through all the documents that Bucky was showing him -- of an extended trip, a stargazing one. He wrings his hands together in anxiety as Steveâs blue eyes flicker from him to the pamphlets.
âBuck, if ya really wanna do this, Iâm all for it,â Steve grins, as Bucky lets out a shaky laugh of relief. Bucky had worked hard towards his recovery since coming back from his tours. It had been a long road of all forms of therapy and trying to gain some semblance of what he once had -- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnât. There are things he clung to --old movies, journaling, astrology-- and while it wasnât always the best, he was getting there each day. He wanted to do something in order to celebrate, map it out and document it in his own way.
Star Gazing Journey. Â
Thatâs what he had planned.       Â
âJust make sure to send a postcard, punk,â Steve smiles, tight but caring because Bucky knows that deep down Steve worries too much, but he canât cage up a grown man, especially when heâs trying to do something he loves.
âYou know I will, jerk,â Bucky laughs, easy and carefree for once.
You go to small bookstore the next day, trying your hardest to gain all the knowledge that had been denied to you when you were younger. So, you can find something to talk about with the mysterious star man you met instead of just having him do all the talking, which he seemed to struggled with at times. All the books are soon filled with notes as you take to writing about all your favorite stories in a small notebook. Your heart is filled with stars and at times you dream about sparkling blues as well.
Youâre running on coffee and excitement when the 2nd April meeting comes around in Inwood Park.
âGood luck,â Wanda, your cubicle buddy, smiles as you grab your bag and begin to head out. While, you werenât completely close, she had seen the rapid change of your cubicle from being completely empty to filled with little sky trinkets and glancing over at what you read during lunch. Â Â Â Â
âThank you,â you smile brightly, which catches her off guard for a moment since you were usually so demure, before heading out. She canât help but smile to herself a little as well. Â
You donât see Bucky the 2nd time you go to Inwood Park, after a whole night spent talking about the stars and what exactly they are made of alongside the stories that have caught your attention -- you had wanted to show how much you had learned in such a short amount of time. He had pointed them out and you would excitedly recall a story you could barely remembered -- you didnât get that this time around.
They tell you that people come and go all the time and while you try to push forward and go a 3rd time in the beginning of May, but it just isnât the same -- maybe, one person was enough to connect you to the stars again because you found yourself looking up books and articles whenever you had the time. However, without him there, it wasnât enough, but without any means of contacting him, of never knowing who âBuckyâ really is, you try your hardest to move forward with what little he left you. Then, it hits you -- those dark city tours that Mr. Kent always talked about. You didnât have to take the whole trip, just areas that interested you and you had enough compt time to move around here and there.
âYes, thatâs what Iâll do,â you grin, tapping the pamphlet lightly before letting go of Inwood Park, though it has left quite the impression on you already. Â Â
Clayton State Park, NM
Bucky had been on an adventure since leaving New York, traveling down the East Coast, hitting all the places along the way that had a good view of the stars, even getting a tour of the Kennedy Space Center when he was down in Florida. However, what he had enjoyed the most so far was watching the clear night sky as he traveled through the wide open space that was the center of the United States. All the light population in New York hadnât prepared him for this and he was too preoccupied during his tours (along with the constant bombings and just trying to stay alive and fight back) to look at the sky above for a moment, so this...this was something else, and he loved it.
âAll right, people this will be our stop for the night,â the tour guide explains as the bus comes to a stop near the state parkâs central campsite. While, Bucky was used to traveling alone, it was easier for him in many ways, he had taken Greyhound through Texas and stopped to take a star guide tour into New Mexico, the Clayton State Park was their most recent stop, though he kept to himself most of the time.
âWeâll be meeting with the 2nd half of our tour group and set up for the night,â the tour guide keeps explaining, as the rest of the group starts exiting the bus. Since Bucky is all the way in the back, he glances out the window for a moment, watching all the other members of their party coming out from a 2nd bus and he swears his heart stops when he sees a familiar face.
âItâs canât be,â Bucky murmurs to himself, as he gets up and finally makes his way out of the bus. However, once he gets off, he stops unsure of what to do next as he watches her talk to the tour guide with an excited smile, before going to talk to two other people. Her face scrunched up as she laughs at a comment that the redhead next to her made, which causes Bucky turn away and rub the back of his neck.
âOne, two,â Bucky calms himself down before heâll do anything he might regret later, because just because she was here didnât mean anything might be connected to him. Maybe, she had just come to enjoy the stargazing or needed a long trip out of the city -- Bucky was sure he didnât make an impression on her or anything. Â Â Â
With that thought, Bucky sighs and heads towards where his own tent area is suppose to be, to gaze up at his constant companions for awhile and not keep staring at the woman that seems as captivating as them.
Your 3-day, 2-night journey into Clayton State Park had been quite the dozy since you had almost missed your flight, had no sleep whatsoever, but meet a cute newlywed couple by the name of Natasha and Clint doing the cross country road trip for their honeymoon. Now, you were spending your morning going through the dinosaur tracks that were prevalent all over the park,  as the couple had taken the other route to swim and near the dam. You smile at the thought of them, while glancing at the other members of your party -- families and couples sharing in the experience together (by taking pictures or just talking) and while you didnât feel lonely, being with someone else would be a nice thought.
And maybe, your grandmother was right about the universe hearing your thoughts when need be, as you nearly trip on a branch only for a strong arm to encircle itself across your lower back and a solid body to mold into yours, as you look to meet burning blues.
âAh, sorry,â your words die out for a moment, as the man ( that man ) gives you a sheepish smile before letting go of you, âBucky? What are you doing here?â
âI could be asking you the same question, doll,â he shrugs, as you try not to show that you miss his warmth. He runs a hand through his hair, but instead of moving away from him (like he thought you would) you just end up closer, arm brushing against arm in the early summer heat.
âThey started promoting these Star Tours back home,â you explain as he looks straight ahead trying his hardest not to memorize the giggle, carefree and easygoing, that leaves your lips at the end, âI just felt like I had to go, ya know?â Â
And deep down in his bones, underneath the pain and remorse, Bucky knows that feeling all too well.
âYeah,â he lets out, as you look at him expectantly waiting for some type of explanation as why you hadnât seen again, âIâve traveling for awhile now too.â Â
âOh really?â you grin, as you spend the rest of the morning and early afternoon talking to the man about his travels and all he had seen so far, alongside dinosaur facts he seems to bring up here and there, while you add in the little stories you have read up on and there isnât a moment where the talk seems to halt awkwardly between the two of you -- just like you had wanted all those months back.
âOkay, but youâre gonna have to save your Big Bear stories for later tonight,â Bucky laughs, as you reach the camping site with the rest of the group. You nod and smile, as he had mention that the Star Point Observatory had the greatest view of the constellation this time of year. You wave at him before going to your side of the camping ground with a big goofy smile.
âOh, I know that look,â Natasha, wearing jeans shorts and tank top, smiles as she sees you come up ahead. You stop at her statement, giving her a questioning look.
âWhat do you mean?â you ask, as her smile gets bigger as her new husband comes from behind and gives her a quick peck on her cheek.
âThatâs the same look Clint had when we meet,â she laughs, as you lose the ability to speak for a moment before heading into your tent without another word. Natasha laughing, as the blond shakes his head.
The walk from the campsite to the small blue metal building that houses the telescope isnât hard, but it is better to do it before it gets too dark as you and most of the tour go down the beaten path. Natasha and Clint are snuggled together in a blanket not too far from you, while you work a simple bomber jacket with two shirts underneath for the cooler night weather. A book and journal in hand, though you were unsure where Bucky was since the afternoon, which made you frown a little.
âI heard thereâs a star party tonight,â someone explains behind you, as you turn around to Bucky giving you a small smile. A heavy jacket and flannel shirt are his chosen attire for tonight, and it reminds you of ---
âLike back at the park,â you smile, clearly catching the meaning of his words. He comes up closer to you, a small polaroid camera around his neck. The two of you walk in silence for awhile, simply taking in the night sky and endless plains of grass. You take a deep breath of the fresh air and wonder if this is what your grandmother meant -- to be one with the world around you, and listen to what it is trying to tell you. Â
Eventually you do end up the observatory, but with only one telescope it will be a awhile before you have a go at it. So, you end up staring at the dark blue sky, as this man who you have only meet twice tells you all he can about the two Dippers in a trip you took on in the last minute, you canât help but smile -- youâre trying your best, and maybe the universe is helping out in its own way.
âThat oneâs Regulus,â he points out to a star sort of below the North Star that makes up the handle the Big Dipper, you nod as he smiles seeing those wide eyes talking in all the information he has to offer.
âThe mighty king,â you explain, as he catches the meaning. You stand there for a long while, waiting for your turn with the telescope as people cheer and talk around you, but to you itâs calming compared to the endless sounds and light of back home. You look to see Bucky staring at the endless dark canopy above, and in that moment you wish you had brought a camera like he had -- to keep this moment living when he wasnât there anymore, but you were okay with this for now.
âExcuse me, could you take out picture,â Bucky questions, somehow answering your prayers as a certain blond comes in and gives you a smile, more subtle than his wife but still loving to tease you. Blue eyes look at you with a silent question and you nod and outstretch your arm so he can take it. Lightly wrapped together you smile at the camera, one and then twice.
The moment passes, but you stay with Bucky for the rest of the night until you have to walk back and gather your things to head back home, while he keeps heading on with his journey -- still a stranger, but closer to your heart than before. He waits to when itâs too close to departure to hand you the 2nd photo, the North Star shining brightly in the background-- with a soft touch of his hand on your knuckles.
âKeep it,â is all he says with a soft smile and red cheeks, as your heart thumps a little faster than usual. He lets you hug him before you head inside to the bus. His warmth doesnât leave your for hours, as you keep the small picture of you and him tucked safely in your journal and his is taped to his little notebook.
On the way home, you wonder what the stars are trying to do to you, though you arenât as apprehensive as you were before, especially if it meant seeing Bucky again. Â

Dumpster fire! Grizzly 2 was released on video in 2020 and now on you tube. Catch it before they remove it. You know you tube with movies. Anyway is it worth a look? Yes only out of curiosity since many of us saw the bootleg work print on you tube. The poster on the dvd touts George Clooney, Laura Dern, and Charlie Sheen as the stars. Ha ha ha they only have 5 minutes of screen time as Friday the 13th type teens. Or 20 somethings playing teens. Other actors include Louise Fletcher,Charles Cyphers,Deborah Foreman,Steve Inwood,John Rhys Davies and the late Deborah Raffin. Yes the waited 37 years to recycle a 1983 never released movie. And padded it with some ridiculous footage. A mechanical bear that kept malfunctioning. Like jaws but comparing this to jaws is like comparing a prime rib to ramen noodles. You get my point. But is it worth the look? Sure itâs better than watching paint dry and as curious as I was I watched it. And felt WTF did I just watch? By the way the movie was filmed in Budapest Hungary. My advice watch the first grizzly 1977. Which has nothing to do with the sequel. Now if they would only release Roger Cormans Fantastic Four, 1993. Which after watching the bootleg I actually enjoyed more than the newer versions. That would be great. Grizzly 2 is a total mess and a dumpster fire.

Their Story Wrote Itself â The New York Times
Cynthia LaFave had a word of warning when she first met T Kira Madden in 2015.
âShe said, âIf you hurt my daughter, Iâll kill you,ââ Ms. Madden recalled.
And that, by Ms. Maddenâs reckoning, was a fair enough thing for her to say about her relationship with Hannah Beresford. Years earlier, Ms. Beresford had fought an episode of depression so crippling she required hospitalization.
Ms. Madden was no stranger to pain, either: Her 2019 memoir, âLong Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls,â outlines her trauma-filled coming-of-age as the queer, biracial daughter of a pair of well-to-do addicts in South Florida. That Ms. Maddenâs pain may have affected Ms. Beresford was a reasonable concern for her mother.
It proved unwarranted. âTheir relationship has brought so much peace to them both that, as it stands now, if anyone tries to hurt Kira, Iâll kill them, too,â Ms. LaFave said.
Ms. Madden and Ms. Beresford, both 31 and now living in Beacon, N.Y., first saw each other in 2012 at the Jamaica Bay Riding Academy in Brooklyn. Ms. Beresford, a former professional equestrian, worked there as a trainer and coach for the nonprofit Metropolitan Equestrian team. Ms. Madden was shepherding the half-dozen homeless veterans she drove there through therapeutic interaction with the horses. It was part of her job as a teacher and counselor at the Doe Fund shelter in Harlem, which also housed formerly incarcerated men, many of them addicts.
Ms. Madden had just received a masterâs degree in fine arts from Sarah Lawrence College, where she is now a professor in the M.F.A. writing program. A career in social services wasnât in her future, but the shelter job attracted her for its proximity to a population that felt familiar. âMy parents were pretty severe addicts,â she said. By the time she moved to New York at 17 for college at Parsons School of Design, both were in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. Then, âwe had this second sort of beautiful life together,â she said. âThey were sober and we had these happy adult relationships. My parents always loved me. They werenât bad people.â
Just complicated ones. Ms. Maddenâs Hawaiian-Chinese mother, Sherrie Lokelani Madden, lives in Atlantic Beach, a part of Hempstead, N.Y., and is the general manager of the Dop Dop Salon in SoHo. Her father, John Laurence Madden, was Jewish and, after a career as stockbroker, headed his brother Steve Maddenâs international fashion accessories business; Mr. Madden died in 2015 of complications from lung disease. In addition to their addictions, they had secrets. Ms. Madden found out as a child she had two half brothers on her fatherâs side from a marriage that her parentsâ affair broke up. As an adult, she learned about another half sister on her motherâs side and a brother, whom her parents had placed for adoption. Still, her childhood in Boca Raton, Fla., had a shiny exterior. She grew up winning equestrian ribbons and attended an exclusive high school, North Broward Preparatory School, in Coconut Creek, Fla.
Fridays at the stable with the Doe shelter residents were an opportunity for her to be around horses again and, on occasions when volunteers ushered her charges through their riding and grooming lessons, to read books.
âHannah noticed me first,â Ms. Madden said. âShe remembers me reading at the picnic table, a Joy Williams book called âEscapesâ.â In 2013, before Ms. Beresford and Ms. Madden found a chance to be properly introduced, the shelterâs horse program ended. But Ms. Maddenâs love of horses lingered. She returned to the stable to ask the barn manager if there was someone who could give her lessons.
She was reconnected with Ms. Beresford, whose job at the stable overlapped with her graduate studies in poetry at N.Y.U.
Ms. Beresford earned her masterâs degree from N.Y.U. in 2014 and now teaches poetry at Drew University in Madison, N.J. She grew up in rural Voorheesville, N.Y. Her parents, Ms. LaFave, a trial lawyer from Albany, and Jon Beresford of Cañon City, Colo., the owner of Beresford Remodeling, divorced when she was 5.
At 4, she had started horseback riding. âIt became pretty consuming,â she said. In 2007, Oklahoma State University recruited her for its N.C.A.A. Division 1 equestrian team. But by then, after years on the road touring, distractions from her athletic career were mounting.
âI had struggled most of my teen years with anxiety and depression, and it all piled up,â she said. In 2008, she hit what she called rock bottom. âI was hospitalized for a while, and in the hospital, I came out,â she said. She called friends and family to tell them she was gay. âAs they say, it got better.â
Credit belonged partially to a college poetry class. âThough Iâd hate to suggest that depression can be treated with anything less than intensive therapy by a medical professional, that became something I could look forward to, where I could see a future.â
At Ms. Maddenâs first riding lesson in Brooklyn in 2013, Ms. Beresford set a professional tone. âWe connected on a lot of different levels,â Ms. Beresford said, especially riding and writing. âBut I didnât know how Kira identified. It didnât cross my mind that she might be gay. I think coming out in Oklahoma, spending my formative years there, made me assume no one else in the world was gay.â
Ms. Madden noted âthat we both were in relationships at the time. But right after that lesson I texted my friend, âThis lesbian in breeches is so hot!â I felt very crushy toward Hannah.â Not so much, though, that she was willing to break up with her girlfriend and ask Ms. Beresford out.
Instead, life got in the way, she said, and after six months she stopped taking lessons. More than a year passed. âBut I always thought of Hannah, how I wished I could be her friend.â In late 2014, she scoured Yelp for the names of Jamaica Bay Riding Academy instructors, hoping to find Ms. Beresfordâs last name and contact info.
Eventually, she reached Ms. Beresford through Facebook. âI was like, âHey, remember me?ââ Ms. Madden said. Both were nearing the ends of their relationships; Ms. Beresford, who considers herself more a country than a city person, was about to move to Austin, Texas.
But after exchanging and reading some work each had written (Ms. Beresford a manuscript in progress and Ms. Madden short stories and part of a novel), they decided to meet for a first date in February 2015 at the Stonewall Inn.
âIn the back of our heads we were thinking, this could be really painful, because I was moving in a matter of weeks,â Ms. Beresford said. But their book swap had already connected them. âWhen youâre reading something autobiographical, you not only learn the facts of the personâs life but the lens through which they see the world,â Ms. Madden said.
[Sign up for Love Letter and always get the latest in Modern Love, weddings, and relationships in the news by email.]
At the Stonewall Inn, they talked and kissed until closing time. âWe got kicked out,â Ms. Madden said. âIt felt like love.â
As the Chinese New Year began on Feb. 19, Ms. Madden, who embraces her Hawaiian-Chinese heritage, and Ms. Beresford celebrated together.
Weeks later, Ms. Beresford rented a U-Haul for her move to Texas. Ms. Madden told her, âYou canât move to Austin without me taking you.â They drove together. Ms. Madden returned to her Williamsburg, Brooklyn, apartment alone. Then, in the fall, her father fell into a coma.
âMy father was my person â I was really close to him,â Ms. Madden said. Ms. Beresford booked a flight and planned to stay in New York until Mr. Madden recovered. When he died, she comforted Ms. Madden through her grief. They wouldnât return to Texas to pack Ms. Beresfordâs things for a full year.
By then, they had become experienced road trippers. âHannah and I always joke that we spent most of our relationship in a car,â Ms. Madden said. In addition to the U-Haul trip, by the end of 2016 they had driven to Buffalo for a horse show and to Kansas to visit friends of Ms. Beresfordâs; they also drove to upstate New York regularly to ride horses and spend time with Ms. LaFave.
Ms. Maddenâs mother had also become a fixture in their lives, through regular visits to the home in SoHo she shared with Mr. Madden before he died, and later to Long Island. Ms. Lokelani Madden felt close to Ms. Beresford immediately. âHannah really grounds Kira,â she said. âShe has this soothing effect. I admire so much how they bring out the best in each other.â
In 2017, Ms. Madden and Ms. Beresford moved to Provincetown, Mass., where Ms. Beresford had accepted a yearlong residency at the Fine Arts Work Center. The next year they moved to Inwood in Manhattan, spending the bulk of their time teaching, writing and editing the literary journal Ms. Madden founded, âNo Tokens.â They had already traveled to 30 states when, in July 2018, Ms. Beresford planned a surprise 30th birthday trip for Ms. Madden.
âWe went up the California coast through the Pacific Northwest and stopped in Powell, Wyo., to ride horses at this campsite ranch near Heart Mountain,â Ms. Madden said. On the evening of July 12, they climbed back in their rented Toyota to watch a meteor shower.
âThere were so many mosquitoes we turned the lights out in the car. Hannah started talking to me about how she wanted to spend the rest of her life with me. It was corny in a great way.â
She spoke Ms. Maddenâs whole name â T Kira Mahealani Ching Madden â before saying, âWill you marry me?â After Ms. Madden said a tearful yes, Ms. Beresford opened her car door and found her way to Ms. Maddenâs side in pitch blackness to present a ring. They counted down from three before turning on the car lights so Ms. Madden could see it: A teardrop-shaped opal surrounded watermelon tourmalines and gray diamonds, designed collaboratively by Ms. Beresford and Misa Jewelry, a Hawaiian designer.
âIt was typical Hannah, being the most thoughtful person in the world,â Ms. Madden said. âYears ago, when I was feeling very lonely, I had bought a watermelon tourmaline engagement ring to remind myself to always commit to my well-being first.â
On Jan. 7 at Kualoa Nature Reserve in Kaneohe, Hawaii, Ms. Madden and Ms. Beresford committed to each otherâs well-being for life. At a wedding attended by 72 guests, Ms. Madden, wearing a marigold dress designed by Zac Posen before he closed his business in November, walked with her mother down an outdoor aisle strewn with multicolor rose petals. Ms. Beresford wore an aubergine suit by Bindle & Keep, a Brooklyn company that specializes in suits for queer and gender nonconforming people.
N. Michelle AuBuchon, a friend and fellow writer who was ordained by the American Marriage Ministries, officiated during a 30-minute ceremony celebrating their devotion to each other.
âTo know T Kira and Hannah is to know how fiercely they love, with no boundaries, barriers or divisions,â she said. A dozen attendants, including Justine Champine, who the couple called âdyke of honor,â stood by the couple as they exchanged handwritten vows. âYou and I have dedicated our lives to words and the arrangements of those words, but itâs these moments, our moments of silence and understanding without explanation that matter most to me,â Ms. Madden said. Ms. Beresford was characteristically poetic: âThe universe may be limitless, but I can count my life in moments of seeing you, of hearing your voice, of disbelieving in scale,â she said.
Yards away from the waterâs edge, with coconut trees swaying and the majestic Koâolau mountains in the background, Ms. AuBuchon pronounced them married.
