FLY ME TO THE MOON (2024)

“Fly me to the moon / Let me play among the stars / And let me see what spring is like / On Jupiter and Mars / In other words, hold my hand / In other words, baby, kiss me.”

It would be nice if the romantic comedy Fly Me To the Moon were as simple, frisky and romantic as the song from which it took its title. Honestly, sometimes it does reach those heights, but it has too much going on plot-wise and not enough romance and comedy to keep its story airborne.

That’s a shame, because this is one of very few rom coms which will be widely released this summer. I was hoping that this film would ignite, but that only happens periodically.

Fly Me To the Moon captures a particular place and time in American history – Cape Kennedy, Florida on the eve of the 1969 Apollo 11 launch and man’s first walk on the moon. It has an interesting cast of characters – scientists, astronauts, marketing specialists, shady government agents, far right-wing politicians and egomaniacal Hollywood directors. It’s old-fashioned, and yet it has things to say about modern society as well.

So why does Fly Me To the Moon only sometimes reach lift-off?

Simply put, because they were trying to do too much. Added into the dish like an unnecessary spice is a whole section based on the old conspiracy theory that the moon landing was a fake made on a soundstage – quite possibly by Stanley Kubrick. (I will give Fly Me To the Moon props for a clever Kubrick gag in the middle of the action.)

This not-so-little subplot does not appear in the story until about an hour into the film, and honestly, it’s an unwelcome addition. Not only has the fakes space mission storyline been done way too often on film already – from the mostly forgotten but surprisingly good 1970s thriller Capricorn One to more recent films like Moonwalkers, Dark Side of the Moon and others. Hell, it was even a quick sight gag in Minions, which may be proof positive that this story is overdone.

To be quite honest, I think Fly Me To the Moon would have worked better had they simply jettisoned that storyline and had done a straight romance around the NASA launch of Apollo 11. The faking story makes more than one of the main characters look bad on a regular basis. Sure, it does give more ammunition to Woody Harrelson playing the shadowy Nixon operative behind the scheme – and Woody is very funny here – but he was very funny well before this plot thread was introduced. They could have found more for him to do in the original narrative.

Because what Fly Me To the Moon is really about – or at least it was until the storyline took that hard right turn – was the timid romance between two very different types of people who meet working on the leadup to the launch.

The woman is Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson), a smart, flirty and somewhat cynical public relations professional who has a sketchy past and some questionable methods. She has been hired by the government to start a buzz on the space program, which is still reeling from the tragic explosion of Apollo 1 a couple of years earlier. She has the hair of an astronaut’s wife, blood red lips and the va-va-voom pants suits and capris of a pin-up girl – all of which she uses to disarm the sexist guys she always has to deal with in business.

The guy is Cole Davis (Channing Tatum), the rather humorless former-aspiring-astronaut and scientist in charge of the mission. You can tell how button-down Cole is because throughout the length of the film he wears the exact same style of shirt – just in different colors. (He also has an odd-modern looking short-but layered haircut which is far from the crew cut which someone in his position would have worn.) You can also tell that he is repressed because the first time he meets Kelly – in a local diner – he acknowledges she is the most attractive woman he has ever seen. Still, he cock-blocks himself, telling her that he can’t get involved with anyone because of bad timing and the importance of his job.

I guess we should look at the elephant in the room here. While Johansson and Tatum are both undoubtedly gorgeous, they have very little chemistry together. This is mostly on Tatum’s side – and it may not even be the actor’s fault, it may just be the role as written. Still, it is a little hard to root for a happy-ever-after for these two.

However, taking a look at the space program at the height of its importance is endlessly fascinating. Had they maintained the view at the actual space landing rather than showing the less interesting attempts to recreate it, Fly Me To the Moon may have been something special. Instead it is a fairly good movie which had the potential to be very good.

Mr. Boyd was born January 19, 1970 in Wilkes County.He was employed by Venture Properties and was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin.

Mr. Boyd is survived by his father; Ricky Boyd and wife Nancy of Springs, NC, his mother; Anne Carter Groce and husband Art of Wilkesboro, three sons; Andrew Boyd Compton of Knoxville TN, Wilson Compton of Mooresville and Tyler Bowman of Lexington and two sisters; Celeste Shumate and husband Chris of Valdez, AK and Melanie Baker and husband Scott of Chardon, OH.

Gladys Shumaker, 100

Mrs. Gladys Margaret Bumgarner Shumaker, age 100 of Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2018 at her home.

Funeral services were held July 29th, at Wilkesboro Baptist Church with Dr. Chris Hefner officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Home Baptist Church Cemetery in Millers Creek.

Mrs. Shumaker was born August 24, 1917 in Wilkes County to John Alonzo Bumgarner and Cilla Creola Watts Bumgarner. She was the owner of Shumakers Exxon. Gladys was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hue Shumaker; four brothers, Ted Bumgarner, Jim Bumgarner, Rex Bumgarner and Rale Bumgarner, and a sister in law, Ruth Bumgarner.

She is survived by a daughter, Pat Faw Smithey of Wilkesboro; a son, James Kenneth Shumaker and wife Jean of Virginia; five grandchildren, Gregory Faw and wife Cynthia, Stephanie Osborne, Leslie Pierce, Laura Krone and husband, Durk, Susan McGinn and husband Mark; ten great grandchildren, Ben Pierce, Kaitlyn Pierce, Elizabeth Faw-Anderson and husband Lucas, Emily Faw, Taylor Krone and wife, Tessa, Connor Krone, Madison Krone, Landon Krone, Caroline McGinn, and Jack McGinn; one brother, Bob G. Mrs. Shirley Ann Horton Perkins, age 79 of Ferguson, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at her home.

A Visitation was held July 28th, at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Darlene Stokes officiating. Burial followed in St. Augustine Florida.

Mrs. Perkins was born August 9, 1938 in Wilkes County to Eugene Horton Sr. and Mattie Mae Witherspoon Horton. She was a member of Beaver Creek United Methodist Church and was a retired Public School Teacher.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Benjamin Perkins, Jr., three sisters; Treble M. Denny, Gennis M. Davenport, Margaret Reid and a brother; Herbert Horton.

She is survived by two sisters; Arita Newkirk of Lenoir, Willie Johnson of Ferguson and three brothers; Charles W. Horton of Ferguson, Robert T. Horton of Lenoir and Eugene Horton of Ferguson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Cable Duane Crowder, better known as Pete, passed away Monday, July 23, 2018 at his home.

Funeral services were held July 28, at Boomer Advent Christian Church with Rev. David Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. .

Mr. Crowder was born April 1, 1945 in Wythe County, VA to Lester Tipton and Mary Verna Taylor Crowder. He was the Owner/Operator of a painting business.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Betty Hicks Crowder and a brother; Farley Crowder.

Mr. Crowder is survived by a step-daughter; Carol Parsons of Walnut Cove, two step- sons; Joe Hicks and wife Marilyn of Boomer and Roger Hicks of Marion VA, four step-grandchildren; Ashley Steele and husband Adam, Joseph Hicks, Matthew Parsons and Megan Parsons, a sister; Joyce Vaughn and husband James and three brothers; Raymond Crowder, Forest Crowder and John Crowder, all of Cripple Creek VA.

Richard Scott Music, Sr., age 73, of Millers Creek passed away Monday, July 23, 2018 at his home. Mr. Music was born February 2, 1945 in Johnson County, Kentucky to Richard and Rebecca Daniels Music. He was preceded in death by his parents and two wives; Francis Katleen Music and Barbara Carol Music.

Mr. Music is survived by; Two sons; Jeff Hayes, Princeton, WV and Richard Music, Jr. (Kimberly), Minter, OH. One daughter; Serena Winters and husband Jason of Millers Creek. Grandchildren; Cody Music, Kelsey Music, James Hayes, Jr., Michael Hayes, Christina Hinkle and Jason Winters, Jr. Brothers; Denver Music and Paul Music. Sisters; Bonne King, Barbara Nunn, Verdie Dean, and Charlotte Dixon. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held July 25, at the Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dan Winters officiating. Burial followed in the Old Fashion Baptist Church Cemetery in the Mulberry community.

Mr. Kelly Gene Ward, age 43 of Roaring River, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2018.

Graveside services were held July 25, at New Light Baptist Church #1 in Roaring River with Rev. Steven Smith and Rev. Keith Wood officiating.

Mr. Ward was born February 9, 1975 in Wilkes County to Denny Michael Ward and Dottie Garris Ward. He was employed by Ward Fencing. Mr. Ward was a member of New Light Baptist Church #1.

He was preceded in death by a brother; Michael Craig Ward and his step father; Cecil Stanley.

Mr. Ward is survived by his mother; Dottie Garris Stanley of State Road and his father; Denny Michael Ward of Roaring River, a brother; Tracy Allen Ward and wife Lisa of Ronda, sister in law; Janine Ward of Hays, three nieces; LeAnn Ward, Ashley Ward and Haley Ward, two nephews; Dylan Ward and Matthew Ward and wife Brittney, great nieces and nephews; Malakai Jackson, Aaliyah Thomas, Gracelynn Ward, Lexi and Madi, a special friend; April Lackey of Millers Creek and many aunts and uncles.

Mollie Handy, 94

Mrs. Mollie Wilkins Handy, age 94 widow of Rex Handy passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Wilkes Senior Village.

No services will be held at this time. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Handy was born June 18, 1924 in Yadkin County to William S. and Dinah Talley Wilkens. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro.

In addition to her parents and husband; Rex Handy, she was preceded in death by a sister; Victoria Wilkins Wendland, two brothers; William Wilkins and John Wilkins,step-son; Gene Handy and nephew; Warren Shore.

She is survived by a niece; Lillian Shore Gambill, step-son; Larry Handy, step-grandson; Michael Handy, great nephew; Charles Gambill and great niece; Lisa Forehand.

No, Rep. Rodney Davis didn't say Congress should hire fewer women to avoid sexual harassment scandals

Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., did not suggest Tuesday that Congress could avoid sexual harassment scandals by hiring fewer women.

Rather, the Illinois congressman said specifically that his office is looking for ways to make sure this exact thing doesn’t happen as a result of increased awareness regarding harassment.

“I have a female-led staff, and I asked them their opinion,” Davis said during the hearing. “They were concerned … that an unintended consequence may be some offices just take a shortcut and not hire women as a way to avoid these issues.”

“Obviously that’s not the right approach,” he added.

Unfortunately for the congressman, his not-at-all ridiculous remarks have made him the target of a Twitter rage mob.

The Huffington Post’s Amanda Terkel – who did nothing wrong here, let’s just emphasize that – tweeted Davis’ remarks as she covered the hearing.

“Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) says he’s worried congressional offices will hire fewer women to avoid issue of sexual harassment,” she wrote on Twitter.

That was all it took to spark a Twitter riot among politicos and pundits, many of whom assumed from Terkel’s single tweet that Davis had actually suggested Congress hire fewer women.

The Nation’s Ryan Cooper wrote, “can’t see a way out of this problem…nope, it’s impossible.”

“Snake eats tail,” tweeted the Atlantic’s Vann R. Newkirk II.

Francisco J. Pelayo, director of Hispanic media and Regional press secretary for the Democratic Party tweeted a single, “Unbelievable.”

“Seriously?! Excluding women from Congress is NOT how we should address sexual harassment,” said EMILY’s List president Stephanie Schriock.

Schriock then added in an endorsement of Democratic House candidate Betsy D. Londrigan, “Let’s get this buffoon out and elect [Betsy] instead.”

The official EMILY’s List Twitter account even published a note of endorsement:

Londrigan herself wrote, “Changing culture around sexual harassment starts w/leadership. Excluding women from workforce is not an acceptable solution.”

Nj.com investigative reporter Payton Guion added elsewhere, “For fuck’s sake, it’s not the presence of women that leads to sexual harassment/assault.”

“Don’t worry, Rod. Soon those Congressional offices will be filled with women and this won’t be an issue,” said anti-gun enthusiast Shannon Watts.

Raw Story’s Sarah Burris said, “Maybe hire fewer creeper predators? Just a thought.”

“Actual solution: hire more women in positions of power. Implement sexual harassment training. Fund sex ed programs so the future looks better. Or we can hire more women as members of Congress,” tweeted Planned Parenthood president Cecil Richards.

BBC’s North American editor Paul Danahar added, “and news now from the 1950’s and this just in from the nation’s capital Washington DC.”

And so on and so on and so on.

As for Terkel (whose use of the word “worried” in her original tweet should have tipped off readers about Davis’s meaning), she tried her best to calm the mob by pointing out Rep. Davis had not said anything wrong or controversial.

“For the record, Davis is not saying he will do this. He said he had female staffers who were concerned about this. But, alas, there was no putting the genie back in the bottle Tuesday. The We Hate Davis mob continued its merry way, and they’re still piling on him for saying a thing he didn’t actually say.
