The best is Chapter 20 ALICE'S AIRPLANE, OR THE LAST VISIBLE PROPELLER - it tells us about why we think electron or elementary particles are so small, when infact they can be as big as the horizon of the black hole.

Opera videos that are 10/10 to me
Some recordings I've seen that I personally think are perfect and amazing, listed for your convenience, in chronological order. I have posted about most of these before and probably will again.
Händel, Giulio Cesare in Egitto (1724), Glyndebourne 2005
The opera: It's Julius Caesar in Egypt. Someone loses his head, Cleopatra seduces a guy, her brother is king but not very good at it. This opera is 4 hours long and a lot of stuff happens.
The video: Beautiful choreographies, strange meditations on British colonialism and gender, great costumes too. Lots of stage blood.
Notable singers: Danielle De Niese, Christophe Dumaux
Official link: Glyndebourne Encore, there's also a low res version on medici.tv, there's also a 2013 revival on Met on Demand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mozart, Don Giovanni (1787), Festival Aix-en-Provence 2017
The opera: The bad man gets punished. It's Don Juan.
The video: A minimalist, "Brechtian" production. The acting is excellent, the costumes and gestures are very effective, everyone involved is super hot. The camerawork is the best I've seen.
Notable singers: Nahuel di Pierro, Isabel Leonard
Official link: medici.tv, it used to be on Youtube but alas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rossini, Le Comte Ory (1828), Metropolitan Opera 2011
The opera: It's a fun farce about a youth who tries to seduce a countess and ends up in a threesome. Peak Rossini.
The video: A very Disney-esque production with simple sets and fairytale costumes, excellent acting, wonderful all around.
Notable singers: Juan Diego Florez, Diana Damrau, Michele Pertusi, Stephane Degout, Joyce DiDonato (yes, all of them)
Official link: Met Opera on Demand
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gounod, Faust (1859), Metropolitan Opera 2011
The opera: A very simplified version of Goethe's tragedy Faust, a scholar makes a deal with the devil, seduces a girl, then regrets it.
The video: Instead of a 16th century devil, the seducer here is 20th century science. Basically Faust is a scientist who works for the military, his work haunts him and kills everyone he loves. The video itself is serviceable, I just really like the concept.
Notable singers: Jonas Kaufmann, Rene Pape
Official link: Met Opera on Demand
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Verdi, Don Carlos (1867), Paris 1996
The opera: Based on Schiller's tragedy Don Carlos, it's about a crown prince who is very bad at his job and in love triangles with literally every other character. Heart-rendingly sad. I love it.
The video: This is pure eye candy, everything is unbelievably aesthetic and well shot, the gestures are fantastic, there's a lot of stage blood at one point. Mildly 90s camp but in a good way.
Notable singers: Thomas Hampson, Roberto Alagna, Waltraud Meier
Official link: medici.tv
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
* Mostly based on whether I think the opera and production and video (and audio) are good. Very much my personal taste; I'm not an expert. I'm linking to official (paid) ways to watch them, all of them can also be found on the internet in various places, but the subtitle situation might be dire. Enjoy responsibly.

Volumes 1-10 of Kekkai Sensen now digitally available!
I can’t believe I’m doing this, but hell hath frozen over.  The first ten volumes of Kekkai Sensen are available via the Darkhorse Digital Comics shop.
I started writing meta about it complaining that they were out of print and not digital - lo and behold they are all there.
Tumblr media
You can tell that Darkhorse doesn’t give a damn about the series since they just started stealth dropping it in the webshop with no warning nor logical release dates.  It went, 1 & 2.  Then 3.  4 through 6.  Suddenly, 7 all the way to 10.
The translation is overall meh, and you have to read a lot of typos and weird choices for names.  7 volumes of Leonard Watch.  Steven starts out at Stephan, then Stephen to finally Steven - says ‘oui’ in volume 1 which is unclear if it was in the original or just their vibe.  You don’t get a consistent city name of Hellsalem’s Lot even when it is in the background on signs! And the frolicking of Steven.  Be prepared for a rough read, but if you want to have it and kick a few bucks to Yasuhiro Nightow, than go forth and buy it.
Darkhorse - you are welcome for the free publicity - but unless you do another physical print run of this series, I am not playing over $20 for a single USED volume of this manga.

'...On Friday night, inside the 2,000-seat Arlington Theater, which was sold out, the fest celebrated Robert Downey Jr. with its Maltin Modern Master Award, which is named after the film critic/historian Leonard Maltin. Maltin moderated a brisk career retrospective conversation with the Oppenheimer best supporting actor Oscar nominee, who charmed the audience with his self-deprecating humor and imitations of everyone from Richard Attenborough to his late father Robert Downey Sr., prior to Downey’s costar Cillian Murphy presenting him with the award itself...
Murphy, who was introduced to a huge ovation, told the crowd: “I’ve never worked with or met anyone like Robert Downey Jr., truly. Aside from his staggering talent and his otherworldly range, he has managed to awe us with both his character and his leading man performances, his searing dramatic performances and his gut-busting comedic performances, he’s taken on and triumphed in every imaginable kind of role… It’s just mind-bending what this man his done. In my opinion, he is the most versatile actor of his generation, most likely of many generations… Robert works incredibly hard to make it look so easy, as all the great ones do. But he’s not just a great actor, he’s a kind of a unicorn, because he’s a great actor who has also risen to the level of superstardom that few of us can comprehend. I think that is because he is one of the kindest, funniest, most generous actors I have ever worked with, and all of that comes out on the screen. You see it in every single performance.””
On Saturday night, TCM host Dave Karger, for the 14th consecutive year, emceed the fest’s Virtuosos Award evening, a celebration of performers who achieved breakthroughs over the past year, which was another Arlington Theatre sell-out...
...Karger introduced six of the eight pre-announced honorees for brief individual interviews: Barbie best supporting actress Oscar nominee America Ferrera, All of Us Strangers lead actor Andrew Scott, May December supporting actor Charles Melton, The Holdovers best supporting actress Oscar nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Past Lives lead actress Greta Lee and Killers of the Flower Moon best actress Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone — Rustin best actor Oscar nominee Colman Domingo and The Color Purple best supporting actress Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks had to pull out of the event due to filming obligations — noting that, by happenstance, all were performers of color and/or members of the LGBTQ community. He cracked, “In other words, you are not going to see one straight white person on stage all night long.”...
Scott discussed how meaningful it was for him to show All of Us Strangers, which depicts a same-sex relationship, in his native Ireland, where it used to be illegal for men to hold hands...
On Sunday...Jazz Tangcay moderated the Variety Artisans Award tribute to a host of Oscar nominees: Barbie songwriters Billie Eilish and Finneas (the siblings behind “What Was I Made For?” were certainly the main draw), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 VFX supervisor Stephane Ceretti, Oppenheimer composer Ludwig Göransson, Barbie production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer, Maestro hairstyling/makeup artist Kazu Hiro, Oppenheimer film editor Jennifer Lame, Killers of the Flower Moon cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sound re-recording mixer Michael Semanick and Poor Things costume designer Holly Waddington...'

Experience the Enchantment of Herald K's "Echo's Song" [embed]https://open.spotify.com/album/7sfWzGaaqXZg1lbE1cko5x?si=V5UTgK1RTWeHWHTEByVdsw[/embed] Herald K is a Norwegian singer-songwriter based in Vienna, whose music blends the sounds of Americana with classic artists like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. His debut album "Strange Delights" was released in 2019, with assistance from some of Vienna's best instrumentalists such as Stephan Steiner and Katie Kern and also produced by Jürgen Plank. The album was met with great acclaim worldwide, and Herald K even partnered with Leena Koppe, a cinematographer, to create a video for his song called "The Light Of Your Eyes". By combining classic sounds with his own personal touch, Herald K has made an album that speaks to both the old souls and the modern romantics. Herald K's 'Echo's Song' is a stunning alt-folk piece that will charm any ear. With its acoustic-driven indie folk instrumentation and lush, dreamy qualities, it is sure to enchant listeners looking for something new and different. The song is written to tell the ancient story of Echo and Narcissus, but with particular emphasis on Echo's point of view. It is sung as a duet between the artist and Lina Louise. The track is the fourth release of Herald K's 'Mythologies' project, a showcase of unique and curious sounds. The music on 'Echo's Song' is simply gorgeous, providing a truly immersive experience. It is beautifully arranged, with the guitars and piano weaving together a vivid sonic world. The nyckelharpa gives the track an ethereal feel and the gentle percussive elements keeps the entire composition grounded in a dreamy reality. There is a true sense of the ancient tale being told in each bar and the emotion behind the track is truly captivating. Herald K's 'Echo's Song' is an exquisite piece of art that brings to life the story of Echo and Narcissus. With its lush folk-inspired soundscapes and delicate instrumentation, it is an absolute must listen. It's a dreamy, unforgettable track that will leave listeners hoping for more from the Mythologies project. Follow Herald K on Website, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.

Common Nicknames in English
This chart shows the nicknames for common given names. You need to be careful, however. Do not call someone by their nickname, unless that is what they tell you to do! Also, the 'nickname' below is sometimes the person's real name. If you call a person "Jack," that does not always mean that his real name is "John"; his parents might have given him the name "Jack" when he was born!
Also, names ending in "y" or "ie" are often used by children, but they use the shorter, more "adult" version of the nickname when they grow up.
Once you have studied these, try the The Nickname Game! (When there are several nicknames, only the first one is used in the same.)

This season’s Premieres have all been awesome.
Flash had a great opening, with a superior acting from all actors this year, and an engaging plot. (plus the thinker)
Arrow pretty much dropped us into the new mess, explaining the story via flashbacks (I’m hoping we’ll run out of them by midseason) and had a pretty down-to-earth plot this year.
and Legends... well Legends is without a debate the best of that bunch. Seriously, I missed those people’s antics. fanfiction just doesn’t cut it sometimes lmao (+ here’s hoping we get real len again this year)
