This Continuing Professional Development programme is designed to offer teachers the opportunity to study particular aspects of the Irish education system and, concurrently, to study the history, literature and culture of Ireland. It is suitable for elementary and secondary teachers, adult learning practitioners, STEM, minority language and special education teachers, those involved in school administration and graduate researchers.
Course Faculty includes members of the University; additionally guest educational practitioners contribute substantially to the course.
Teaching is by means of lectures, seminars, meetings with Irish educators and visits to educational institutions, as well as guided cultural tours which facilitate contact with the music, language and people of Ireland. Students are provided with informal opportunities to view and study relevant resources from the University Library. I think the effects of late stage capitalism and some other stuff really need to be added to this.
Most people don't have access to third places! The younger generations have grown up without their existence at all. Sharing public spaces and the benefits of that are a rarity.
Everything costs money. The idea of something being free is foreign to most young people. Of course they don't think operating at a loss is viable. The things that did have been targeted by conservative politicians for decades.
Cars! Cars and the emphasis on them in city planning has greatly limited where kids can go, several times more than phone tracking! You have to ask your parents to take you some place and doing so is expensive cause gas money. Even when kids get their own cars they're limited by gas money and jobs that get them that money. Public transit is hugely deficient and is experience with it can often be limited to the school bus and how much it sucked. Walking places is unsafe because of cars, pollution, and lack of sidewalks.
There's also the real paranoia of being a marginalized person in public. While a lot if fear is held in urban legends of kidnappings there is the reality that you will be harassed. Girls will be catcalled and followed. People of color have an ever present threat of racist harassment and violence.
Most young people until 2020 & 2023 had never seen the benefits of collective action. Protests, riots, and strikes weren't an option in their minds. They don't participate in boycotts because they've never seen the benefits from them.
9/11! 9/11's impact can not be overstated. The patriot act and its direct effects seem like they have always existed if you have never known anything else. Young people don't know that the department of homeland security is a product of 9/11. If you haven't been in k12 in a hot minute you might not know that 9/11 is basically a holiday. All normal history lessons stop to talk about it. Young people have never lived in a country that wasn't fighting a futile war.
Public schools are underfunded and stem is promoted without context. Lack of critical reading skills can be traced to the lack of resources and test focused schools. STEM is seen as the only good viable option for a future, but STEM is only a comfortable income if you sell your soul to silicon valley, military contractors, or big pharma. Kids are also perpetually burnt out bc they have insane amounts of work and time required by school.
here's my hot take about my generation and people younger than me (I'm 22 years old)
The reason current teenagers and people in their really early 20s are conservative on accident and have such shitty takes on the internet is because our generation was much more sheltered than previous generations and because we were raised to be ok with orwellian servailence and that is 100% the fault of our parents, Reagan Era kidnapping panics, and the rise of technology all coming together to prevent us from doing the sketchy shit that sends parents into panic mode but which is also completely fundemental to childhood development. If your parents had even a crumb of money to their name and even a shred of free time they started tracking your phone as soon as it was possible to. I did not experience this because my parents are actively trying to live like it's the 1990s and still have not gotten cell phones of their own, and did not let me have one until I was 18 years old and it was no longer their choice, but literally over half of my friends in middle and high school had their phones tracked by their parents at some point or other, and we would occasionally find this out, not because their parents told them, but when we were trying to do the aforementioned sketchy shit and their parent's car would pull up. And I would, like a reasonable person after finding this out, encourage my friends to just leave their phones at home, and their response would be "What if I get kidnapped" or "My parents are just trying to keep me safe"
This in my estimation has lead to a combination of kids being terminally online because they do have internet access and are better at deleting search history than their parents think they are, but don't have the freedom to go out and do shit without their parents' knowledge or consent, so they have the most privacy from the people who control their lives while they're on the internet, and kids not having the real world experiences they should have, not knowing how to connect with other people irl, not feeling comfortable leaving the house because of the horror story lies their parents told them to make them ok with the surveillance they were inflicting on their kids. Kids these days are growing up in the fucking panopticon when they should be out in the woods playing with knives or stealing cigarettes from their older sibling and going out to an empty parking lot to smoke them or whatever and that shit is sticking with them into adulthood. Things that were "tee hee we could get in trouble isn't this so fun and daring" in the 1990s and 2000s have become in the 2010s and 2020s things that are "If I do that without texting my parents some sort of lie to excuse where my location is my parent's car will pull up and I will get grounded for the next two weeks."
Like even when I was 19 I had a 16 year old friend who would volunteer their time at a food shelf and that's how we knew each other. We would talk about dungeons and dragons together, and the game store was 4 blocks from the food shelf. One day we left the food shelf earlier than they had told their parents they would and they got punished for that. We were literally just going to look at dungeons and dragons miniatures and dice, which was self evident if you could see where we started and how far we walked and where too. I have to assume that this isn't uncommon. It's wrong, but it's not uncommon.

Science. Society. Sustainability.
As college students, we are expected to be equipped with sufficient knowledge and skills in science - being that it has been one of the core subjects that has been taught to us since we were in primary school up until senior high school. And given in our country’s enforcement of the K12 curriculum, the S.T.E.M. or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics strand is constructed and solely dedicated to teach and prepare students who are planning to take up mainly science and mathematics major courses in college.
It is indeed undeniable that science, technology, and innovation are integral aspects in society - all of these play essential roles that has helped our civilization strive to greater heights.
But this begs the question; how is ‘science’ perceived outside the academic community? What is ‘science’ to a non-science major student? How is the essence of science to be understood by the common people and the public?
Science is a very complex discipline, both in theory and in practice; but in simple terms, science aims to understand the world through observation and experimentation. Science, however, have a lot of misconceptions and one of them is that science is inclusive only to practicing professionals in the field. This stems from the common misunderstanding that science is done in isolation and seen as an activity that only scientists can perform. In a way, this type of mindset makes science more intimidating than it really is. So how should we look at science?
It is important to keep in mind that one characteristic of science is that it is a social exercise. It is properly termed as “citizen science”, wherein scientists work side by side with non-professionals. One does not have to be a scientist in order to fully extract the essence of science, it just all comes down to our science literacy.

By being immersed and involved in science is our social responsibility and by having scientific literacy, we are allowed to practice and create solutions to the issues our society is facing. One of the most important examples, on how we as individuals can contribute, is on sustainability.
Today, our world is facing the dilemma of the destruction and depletion of the planet’s resources. Global warming and pollution are only two of the many causes of the destruction of habitat and loss of biodiversity - it is our human activities and interference that is to blame for all of this. But by being socially responsible, being scientific literate, and practicing sustainable development, we can all help in saving and preserving the environment.
