another new toy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been planning to get a number of accessories for my new computer. A new monitor, microphone, maybe one of those vr headsets. But after having it for a few weeks, one thing jumped out as needing an upgrade more urgently than anything else - the stock full size keyboard that came with it was just too large and awkward for my little keyboard shelf. I was tempted to go back to the Microsoft Compact Bluetooth keyboard that I was using with the Steam Deck... but I haven't had a "real" computer, like a proper desktop computer in decades, I wanted a "real" keyboard to go with it. Like a proper mechanical keyboard with switches and buttons and such. And so I typed "mechanical keyboard reviews" into a youtube search, blissfully unaware of the rabbit hole I was about to fall down.
If you know then you already know, but it came as a surprise to me that membrane keyboards are so cheap and so easy to mass produce that they've taken over the casual market altogether, forcing mechanical keyboards into the domain of the ⋆ ˚。⋆˚enthusiast⋆ ˚。⋆˚
Yes, it seems proper keyboards are a hobby now, not a very cheap one either, and the very last thing I need is another expensive hobby. But every hobby has its more affordable and approachable on ramps, and there are a number of pre-built budget boards occupying this space in world of mechanical keyboards. After watching a few dozen hours of youtube videos and reading a bunch of reviews and tutorials, I eventually settled on the RK84 'limited edition' from Royal Kludge for us$80. Which is like twice what I expected to pay when I in my naive innocence began shopping for keyboards, but I've come to understand that eighty bucks absolutely counts as "budget" in this hobby.
Pricing aside, I really do love my new keyboard. The 75% form factor is ideal, better centering the typing keys and saving a bunch of extra space on my little shelf while maintaining all the functionality of a full size board save only for the number pad. While I do like to use a number pad, I don't mind taking one out when I need it, and the keyboard even has a couple usb ports to easily plug a mouse and separate number pad into, which is super convenient and such an obvious idea that I really have to wonder why all keyboards aren't doubling as USB multi-dongles at this point, with additional usb ports, sd card ports, and so on.
For $10 more than the regular RK84 wireless, the 'limited edition' version has better keycaps, factory-lubed switches, some filler foam in the housing to reduce the hollow sound, an additional layer of sound dampening foam sandwiched between the top plate and the pcb, and a snazzy color scheme, the version I chose combining a black body and mostly black keys with a white top plate that better reflects the swirly rainbow rgb backlighting. The sound is decent, at least to my untrained ear, right out of the box. Which is ideal, as I'd like to avoid the temptation to start modding it.
Because I've gone about as far down this particular rabbit hole as I want to go.
Though I suppose it is tempting to open it up, as some basic tape & band aid mods would be cheap and easy and might improve the sound a bit...
And as much as the pre-lubed yellow linear switches are nice, I did make sure to get a hot-swappable board so it's easy to change them out later if I want to try alternatives, and I do think I might prefer tactile switches for typing...
And the rgb lighting is nice enough that it really is a shame these caps aren't shine though. Yeah, yeah, shine-through is tacky, but Cringe is Dead, and some black top pudding caps might really make the lighting pop. Or maybe a mix of black, white and some accent color to match the color layout that the board came with?
The abyss, it tempts me so...

PlayStation's PC Strategy Is Going Well As Ghost Of Tsushima Was The Best-Selling Game Of May 2024
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/playstations-pc-strategy-is-going-well-as-ghost-of-tsushima-was-the-best-selling-game-of-may-2024/
PlayStation's PC Strategy Is Going Well As Ghost Of Tsushima Was The Best-Selling Game Of May 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PlayStation’s PC efforts are paying off, if the latest U.S. Video Game Market Highlights report from analyst group Circana is any indication. That’s because developer Sucker Punch Production’s Ghost of Tsushima, which originally launched on PlayStation 4 back in 2020, was the best-selling game of May 2024 in the U.S. And that’s almost assuredly due to the recent PC release of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on May 16.
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut hit PC almost four years after the game’s initial launch on PS4, which speaks to PlayStation’s PC release strategy it detailed last month. It said its live-service games, like this year’s Helldivers 2 or the upcoming 5v5 hero shooter Concord, will launch day-and-date on PC, but its tentpole single-player games, like Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and God of War Ragnarök (hitting PC this September), will launch at later dates.
[embedded content]
The rest of the top 10 for May 2024 looks like this:
Ghost of Tsushima
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
Helldivers II
MLB: The Show 24
Sea of Thieves
Minecraft
Elden Ring
Hogwarts Legacy
Stellar Blade
And here’s what the top 20 best-selling games of the entire year look like:
Year-to-Date Ending May 2024 Top 20 Best-Selling Premium Games – U.S. (Dollar Sales, Physical and Digital from digital data sharing publishers, excludes add-on content) pic.twitter.com/Wnacwg4ixw
— Mat Piscatella (@MatPiscatella) July 8, 2024
For May 2024, content spending fell 3% compared to May 2023, down to $3.6 billion, even despite a 13% growth in mobile content spending. However, that 13% increase in mobile spending was offset heavily by a 40% drop in console content spending, according to Circana executive director Mat Piscatella. He attributes the May 2024 console spending decline (compared to May 2023) to the strength of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s launch last year.
Elsehwere in the report, Piscatella says video game hardware spending declined 40% as well when compared to May 2023, down to $202 million. “Through May, all current generation hardware platforms are showing double-digit percentage declines year-on-year in 2024, with Switch showing the most significant drop,” Piscatella writes on X (formerly Twitter).
The PlayStation 5 led May 2024’s hardware market in unit and dollar sales, with the Switch in second for unit sales and the Xbox Series X/S in second for dollar sales. Throughout each console’s 43 months on the market, the PS5 is up by 8% compared to the PS4 and the Xbox Series X/S is down 13% compared to the Xbox One.
May spending on video game accessories dropped 8% when comparing May 2024 to May of last year, and the PlayStation Portal was the best-selling accessory in dollar sales for the month – it’s also the best-selling accessory for the entire year.
For more, be sure to check out the entire Circana report here. After that, read Game Informer’s Ghost of Tsushima review, and then check out this video for a look at how Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut runs on Steam Deck.

Note
So with both the Playstation and Xbox showcases having wrapped, along with a few others, I thought that I should share some gaming news:
Star Wars Outlaws
I seriously did not expect this game at all. And it looks phenomenal! I'm thrilled that they're turning away from the usual Rebellion-Empire, Jedi storylines that we've seen recently and are going towards a gunslinger, smuggler point of view this time around. And from the gameplay shown, this is basically Red Dead Redemption 2 in Star Wars form. The only concern is that this is developed by Ubisoft, which has a reputation for downgrading their games after post-production and hasn't done a lot of innovation in their latest games.
Starfield
I know there is a lot riding on this game, especially for the current Xbox generation. But this game isn't going to make me buy a new Xbox any time soon, mainly because this game looks and feels generic at best. And it has the same game mechanics as No Man's Sky, a game that you could get for 50% when it goes on sale frequently. Or if you just want a Space RPG, then just get The Outer Worlds for $20.
I honestly don't know why people preordering this game in droves, particularly because Bethesda has released really buggy games while also having absurd microtransactions. But since Microsoft owns them now, I'm also having my doubts since one of Microsoft's studios just released perhaps one of the worst disastrous launches in gaming history a little over a month ago. Also, it's locked at 30 frames per second, so if I get a Series X, it's not going to take advantage of the hardware. So, I'll wait until the reviews come in, or at the very least, it goes on sale.
Xbox Series S Carbon Black
It's simply the Series S, just in black. However, it has 1TB of storage instead of 512GB. And it only costs $350. So $50 more for an extra 500GB? This is a really great budget deal in my opinion if you want to upgrade to the current generation of consoles without breaking the bank.
CRKD Nitro Deck
So this is a Switch accessory, but if you want to make your Switch look like a Steam Deck, this is it. However, you don't have to worry about stick drift, it has reprogrammable back buttons, and you can customize the joysticks.
Also, it comes in a limited edition Gamecube colorway, which is really nostalgic for Nintendo fans.
Im gonna be honest i don’t know either game so i hade to research lol 😂 but they both do look really cool I’ve only every played Star Wars Fallen Order but outlaws looks pretty fun, i would definitely like to check it out. Star Field looks sick!! Omg the graphics, but from the trailer it looks like a shooting game am i wrong? I don’t play games like that anymore i used to play stuff like gta san andres or cod in high school but i wasn’t v good tbh 😂. Auto aim is my bestie is all I’ll say haha. I don’t know much about game mechanics or frame rates so i can’t say much there sorry. You can educate me if you want lol. Also I’ve heard of a steam deck and seen it idk what it does? I looked up the nitro deck and i love the gamecube skin, i still have my gamecube and controls 🥹 once i know what it is ill think about purchasing it lol

Vampire Survivors snags Steam Deck top 20 spot yet again
Tumblr media
Valve just revealed the top Steam Deck games for the month of April, and Vampire Survivors once again reigns supreme. Other PC game favourites like Elden Ring are also sitting pretty at the top, but handheld enthusiasts are evidently sinking their teeth into newer releases on the go too Vampire Survivors is arguably one of the best Steam Deck games out there, and as you may have guessed, this isn’t the roguelike’s first time at the ‘most-played’ top. In fact, the survival game seems to have a knack for winning portable players over, as it has held dominion over the handheld list multiple times already. Here are the top Steam Deck games for April 2023: - Vampire Survivors - Elden Ring - Hogwarts Legacy - Stardew Valley - Resident Evil 4 - Red Dead Redemption 2 - Grand Theft Auto V - Cyberpunk 2077 - Dredge - Hades - No Man’s Sky - The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - Brotato - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition - MONSTER HUNTER RISE - Fallout 4 - Slay the Spire - Persona 5 Royal - Dead Cells It’s easy to see why Vampire Survivors is considered ‘Great on Deck’, as the shoot-em-up doesn’t make the handheld sweat. That Steam Deck Verified badge pinned to its cloak also provides a level of portable reassurance, meaning you won’t have to worry about workarounds or weird bugs haunting the experience. All that aside, its addictive gameplay loop will put you in a Dracula-style trace if you let it, and developer Ponicle dropped fresh Vampire Survivors DLC alongside its latest update last month. That could partially explain why the shooter is now sitting at the top yet again, but newcomers are encroaching on the roguelike romp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC4O-_kG11s As you can see above, Resident Evil 4 Remake is sitting pretty far up Valve’s list, which makes sense given that it managed to creep onto the top Steam Deck games for March. It also feels right to give Dredge a shout-out, as the Lovecraftian fishing game is clearly winning portable players over with its gorgeous cell-shaded visuals and ominous (yet somehow cosy) vibes. We’ll check back in once Valve shares its top Steam Deck games for May 2023, as new releases like Star Wars Jedi Survivor and Arkane’s latest FPS game could end up on the list. That said, players are already having a rough time with Star Wars Jedi Survivor on PC, and our Redfall review outlines why the shooter falls short. Already got your favourite games installed? Why not turn your attention to our best Steam Deck accessories list, as our add-on suggestions will help you put together the perfect portable setup. Read the full article

Player doesn't want to be the thrill
Some of the biggest announcements to emerge from January was Blizzard's announcement of a brand new game set in the "all all-new universe" is currently in the works which adds yet another bow to buy cheap Diablo IV Gold maker's symbolic bow. It wasn't the sole one to announce something new and exciting however, as Apex Legends creator Respawn Entertainment also announced that they are working on a triple-A shooter.
To top it all off Fans of turn-based strategies were rewarded with the news of an all-new studio, headed by Doom and XCOM team, who have united to bring even more strategic fun to this ever-growing genre.
The highlight of February was, of course, Elden Ring. As a result, it was touted as one the top FromSoftware games ever The RPG game quickly rose to the top of the charts, as players competed from all over the world to restore the item of the title. Additionally, Elden Ring, Amazon Games and Smilegate RPG brought ARPG/MMO hybrid Lost Ark to the West after a wildly successful launch in Korea. While server queues rose and players lost the desire to play but the game has exploded following its launch, and now has an abundance of fun areas and classes. Dying Light 2 also deserves an instant mention. After the fact, what player doesn't want to be the thrill of killing zombies?
And finally, Valve changed the landscape of gaming on the go, as we discussed during our Steam Deck review. Initially, very few people were able to access the device due to reservations and many people placing an order, but the device quickly was a hit with boot screen modifications as well as physical accessories and gamers racing to enhance their buy Diablo IV Gold games to work with the new system.

4cr Plays - SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech
Tumblr media
Swedish developers Image & Form have taken on a variety of genres with the versatile SteamWorld setting. SteamWorld Dig and Dig 2 were gorgeous, polished takes on the sidescrolling action-adventure. SteamWorld Heist presented an addictive take on the turn-based strategy game. SteamWorld Tower Defense was, well, a creative take on its namesake.
Now, Image & Form are back with their most ambitious release yet. SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is the studio’s riff on the RPG genre, with an addictive card-based battle system.
Read on for my impressions.
Tumblr media
SteamWorld Quest places you in the armor-plated shoes of Armilly - the grocer’s daughter, who dreams of living up to the legend of her hero, Gilgamech - Copernica - a college dropout who wants to bring alchemy to the people - and Galleo - a craftsman looking for a way out of his mother’s basement. Their little village is attacked by an army of mechanical monsters, and the professional adventurers prove to be completely useless. Suddenly, Armilly, Copernica, and Galleo find themselves in the spotlight, as the only ones who can repel the invaders and save the world.
The plot of SteamWorld Quest is essentially the hero’s journey at the heart of many fantasy novels. It’s a fun ride, and the charming dialogue really carries the experience. I fell in love with the characters from almost the start - you can’t help but love Copernica’s sarcasm and Armilly’s sheer, puppy-like earnestness. The general tone of the game is perfect. It’s a little tongue-in-cheek, and throws a few fun winks at the player without getting obnoxious. I expected finely-tuned gameplay from Image & Form, but was genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed the writing too.
Tumblr media
SteamWorld Quest is presented as a series of chapters, each essentially a sidescrolling “level” to explore. Whether forest paths, a dungeon, or a damp cave, you move between a series of rooms full of enemies, characters to talk to, merchants, and obstacles. You can destroy items to collect gold, and search for chests full of items. Your map shows the rooms that you’ve explored, and indicates missed paths. Of course, there are also hidden rooms not indicated on the map, so there is incentive to explore each area as much as you can.
If you get close to an enemy, combat begins. Battles are turn-based, alternating between groups - that is, your party takes a turn, then the enemy party takes a turn (rather than alternating between individual characters). Combat is card-based. Each of your three party members has a deck of eight cards, which are shuffled together to form your deck. You draw a hand of six cards at the start of the battle, and draw back up to six each turn. On a turn, you may perform up to three actions. You could play three cards, or use up to three items - like health-restoring potions - instead.
The actions you can choose are determined by your SP - “steam points”. Each character has cards that represent basic actions, either simple attacks, stat modifiers, and such. Basic actions are weak, but they cost nothing to use and grant you one SP. More powerful cards - attacks, healing, powerful spells - cost one or more SP to play. SP is held in a shared pool for the party. When choosing skills, you need to decide whether to focus on one character’s cards, or whether to spread actions between party members. If all three cards belong to the same character, you get to execute a special fourth action for that character. However, some skills are more powerful if paired with another character’s abilities. Other times, it might make sense to pair one character’s mighty attack with another’s healing touch.
Tumblr media
Using a card takes it from your hand to the discard pile, putting it out of play until the existing deck is used up. Fortunately, with a combined deck size of 24, it is never long until discarded cards come back into play. You can also freely discard two cards each turn and draw replacements immediately. This is a great touch, helping you get out of situations where you feel “stuck” and allowing you to gamble on a definite - but weak - turn versus a potentially great turn. Since you get cards back eventually, you have a lot of freedom to try to manipulate your hand.
Each character has their own specializations, strengths, and weaknesses. Armilly is your standard “knight”, excelling at physical attacks and defense. Copernica is the “wizard”, with elemental magic attacks. Galleo is your support character - your “priest” - with healing skills, the ability to inflict status ailments like poison on enemies, and stat manipulation abilities. This impacts the kind of skills they each bring to the table, and what you can expect out of them in combat.
Each character has stats (the typical RPG ones, like strength, magic, constitution, etc.). Armilly is good at physical strikes, Copernica is not. However, Copernica makes up for a lack of strength with powerful element-based magic attacks. You also equip weapons and accessories to improve your stats, and attacks do damage based on these stats. For example, an ice attack that does 120% magic damage does 12 damage if your magic stat is 10.
Tumblr media
You can have three party members at one time, and eventually do meet more characters that join the adventure. Like Armilly, Copernica, and Galleo, each additional character brings their own unique twists to the combat formula, and it is worth experimenting with part composition to find the one that works for how you play the game. Unfortunately, only the active party members gain experience, so unused characters quickly fall behind.
Each character has their own deck of cards. You find new cards throughout the world, and defeated monsters yield materials that can be used to craft new cards at the merchant. Very quickly, you end up with many more cards than can be used in your eight card deck, and choosing the right cards becomes an interesting optimization problem. You have to consider not just that character in isolation, but also the decks of the rest of the party. Galleo might not be the strongest attacker, but you still might want to include some of their attack cards to not end up in a situation where you only have healing cards. However, reasonably frequent save points and the ability to resurrect enemies give you a lot of freedom to explore different deck configurations.
The battle system is incredible. I have had a blast experimenting with different party and deck configurations, and the element of random draws adds a lot of interesting little surprises and chances to plan out a series of actions. There is a huge amount of depth to each aspect of combat. Yet, at the same time, the system is easy to immediately understand. You never feel lost in a series of dense mechanics. It’s a wonderful case of “easy to understand, hard to master”.
Tumblr media
SteamWorld Quest is also a gorgeous game, especially on the Switch’s tablet screen. The art has a hand-drawn, painted quality to it. The blend of steampunk and fantasy is really appealing - mixing traditional concepts like wizards and knights with gears and bolts -  and I love the interesting little details in all of the character designs, like how the cards look like old-school punchcards. There is a nice variety of environments to explore, and the developers have made great use of color to present a richly detailed world. I have played almost entirely in portable mode, but the game looks wonderful both on the TV and on the go.
SteamWorld Quest is one of the most enjoyable RPGs I’ve played recently, and it’s easy to get sucked into. Once again, Image & Form have put out a wonderfully polished, creative take on a well-known game genre, and I think they’ve outdone all of their past efforts. If you like card games or RPGs, you should definitely give this a go.
This review is based on a copy of the game provided by the developers.

Nintendo Switch OLED review: Beautiful, but not a must-have
youtube
Though they don’t come out with the annual frequency of an iPhone, video game consoles can always be counted on to have a few mid-cycle refreshes (think: the PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X). This week it’s Nintendo giving the OG Switch a makeover, adding an OLED screen and a few other exterior tweaks. But it’s basically the same system on the inside, so don’t call it the Switch Pro. It’s officially dubbed the Nintendo Switch OLED, because calling it the “slightly nicer Switch” doesn’t really move units from the shelves. If you’ve already invested in a Switch or Switch Lite you won’t need the upgrade, but if you’re still Switch-less this is the model to buy.
It’s $50 more than the original, which is not being pulled from shelves just yet. For $350, the new Switch has a full 7-inch OLED screen, a step up from the older model’s 6.2-inch display. The larger screen size is appreciated, though after six hours of playing it in handheld mode I didn’t notice the difference as much.
Kris Naudus / Engadget
What did catch my attention when I switched back to the original were the chunky bezels around the 6.2-inch display. I’ve never liked them and found them to be one of the least attractive things about the system. Now they make me recoil in disgust when I compare them to the OLED model’s slim lines, which have been whittled to a third of the size. The matte plastic frame around the screen has also shrunk and changed to a glossy plastic, making it even less obtrusive.
As for the display itself: yes, it is noticeably brighter. There’s enough of a difference that in my initial hands-on I was dismayed when I returned to my personal Switch at home hours later. When placed side by side, the difference is undeniable. The colors pop just a bit more, the blacks are deeper and the whites are… more white, with the original having a slight lavender tint in contrast to the purer white of the OLED screen.
Kris Naudus / Engadget
While not every game will benefit from better colors, Nintendo is also releasing Metroid Dread the same day. Like all titles in the series, the game traffics in a lot of dark spaces, with the bright pop of Samus’ red and yellow (or blue) armor contrasting nicely alongside backgrounds of brown and gray. It’s a good showcase for the OLED’s improved color fidelity and just a nice-looking game in general, which distracts from the fact that the new Switch doesn’t bring any actual improvements under the hood.
The CPU and GPU go unaltered, which ensures that all future Switch titles remain compatible with existing Switch and Switch Lite systems. This is pretty much in keeping with the Game Boy Advance and 3DS lines of products, which saw some radical redesigns like the Game Boy micro and 2DS over their lifespans. Sure, there were handhelds like the DSi and New 3DS that came with improved internal specs, but those never saw widespread adoption. The Switch OLED is a lot more like the Game Boy Advance SP: significant improvements to the display and form factor, but the same old library of games.
Alongside that new display are a bunch of minor tweaks that don’t seem like much when considered individually, but as a whole really improve the experience. The most notable is the new stand on the back. The one on the original Switch is small and roughly a finger’s width, with only two positions: open and closed. The one on my original launch unit no longer locks in the “closed” position and has a tendency to flop out when I’m playing in handheld mode. It also detaches completely if you look at it funny.
The Switch OLED’s stand is an entirely different beast. Instead of a skinny little strip, it’s now a Microsoft Surface-style panel that stretches across the back of the entire unit, with real hinges that can be left in a number of positions so you can now put your unit at whatever angle you prefer. I wouldn’t try to pull this thing off; the hinges are actually molded into the plastic, so if you do break it, it’ll have to go off to the Nintendo repair shop to get fixed up.
Kris Naudus / Engadget
To accommodate the new stand a bunch of stuff has been moved around on the back of the Switch unit. The logo is now printed on the stand itself, so it’s been moved to the lower half of the rear. The manufacturing info, like the parts number and voltage, is now printed in black on the black plastic, underneath the stand. So it’s doubly hidden — a subtle but welcome improvement. The rear speakers have been moved to the bottom edge of the unit, where they also serve as a way to pull the stand out. It’s actually very thoughtful, while providing clear game audio and minimizing system noise. And, while the microSD hasn’t been completely relocated, it’s now placed parallel to the bottom edge. I assume this small change is to keep users from accidentally pulling out the card when they’re trying to adjust the stand. The one thing that hasn’t been relocated is the USB-C port on the bottom, so you still can’t recharge it in tabletop mode.
Kris Naudus / Engadget
There are fewer changes to the device’s top edge, with the most notable being a button redesign resulting in longer, thinner power and volume switches. The new buttons aren’t easier to hit, but they do look sleeker and feel better under my fingers thanks to the textured plastic of the Switch OLED. The system is actually just nicer to hold now, like when it kept the sweat from pooling under my clammy hands during a particularly stressful boss fight in Metroid Dread.
Kris Naudus / Engadget
Because the Switch OLED has to be compatible with all existing accessories, that means the unit is the same height and width as the original model. The Joy-Cons haven’t gotten a redesign, but hopefully the infamous “Joy-Con drift” has been eradicated by now. The new black and white color scheme is very nice, a step up from my all-gray launch unit in terms of style. If you like a more playful color palette, the Switch OLED can also be bought with red and blue Joy-Cons, or you can swap any other Joy-Cons you want. But the white ones don’t show scratches as easily as the other shades, so they’ll look spiffy for longer.
The one change in the system’s dimensions is the weight, thanks to the OLED screen. When handling the original and new Switch side by side, the difference is undeniable. But it’s not a big enough divide to make the Switch OLED less portable in any way. Subjectively, it might actually seem a bit lighter, possibly because the weight is well-distributed. The one thing about the build that feels like a step down is that the OLED model has a tiny bit of flex in the middle of the rear panel that’s not present in the original. However, it doesn’t make much of a difference to the build quality unless you’re planning to take a hammer to the back of the unit.
Kris Naudus / Engadget
Because the system keeps the same internals, that means the battery has gone unchanged as well. It’s the same as the refreshed 2019 battery, which offers between four and nine hours of battery life compared to the launch unit’s cap of six hours. However, the new OLED should be more power-efficient than the LCD, and in use it appears to be. I got almost seven hours of Metroid Dread before I got the “low battery” warning at 15 percent, and that’s a game that makes frequent use of vibration. Compare that to the four or five hours I tend to get out of my OG Switch, even when playing something fairly tame like Animal Crossing or Untitled Goose Game.
If you already have an existing Switch, you can drop the OLED model into your current dock and it will work just fine. But the system does come with its own, redesigned dock that you might want to set up. It looks a lot nicer thanks to its rounded corners and glossy black plastic on the inside (which admittedly will probably scratch up over time). The back panel isn’t great, as it feels flimsy and can come off completely (so you may lose it). But all of these are outweighed by the important addition of an ethernet port.
Prior to this, the Switch has always been intended as a wireless system, and it hasn’t been stellar. Early models had a tendency to “forget” how to connect to your WiFi, forcing you to restart the system. And even now, downloading from the Nintendo eShop can be pokey; even with the OLED model I had to leave my system sitting for an hour or two while it downloaded games wirelessly. But now you can just plug in a cable for a faster, more reliable connection. If you have one in your living room, that is. Many people don’t, which makes this a feature for the more technical-minded fans. It’s the one new feature of the Switch OLED that I would consider “pro” level, and if you have a place to plug in it’s certainly worth the $50 premium.
Kris Naudus / Engadget
Overall, the Switch OLED is a nice system coming out at an odd time, as it’s been over four years since the release of the original Switch. Based on Nintendo’s past release history, that would indicate a new console some time around 2023. So it’s a big ask of people to buy a $350 system if something better is just around the corner. (Nintendo has categorically denied that it has plans for a new Switch as recently as last week, but that doesn’t preclude that one will come out eventually.)
There’s also the specter of the Steam Deck in December, just two short months from now (assuming no delays). It's far more powerful than the Switch, and is also much larger, but promises access to almost the entire Steam library, which happens to overlap with the current Nintendo eShop quite a bit. The biggest selling point for the Switch OLED is access to storied franchises like Mario and Zelda, as well as the incredible bargain that is Switch Online. But you don’t need an OLED screen or wired ethernet to enjoy old NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis titles.
Kris Naudus / Engadget
If you’re not going to be able to plug it into ethernet, or don’t need better speeds because you play offline all the time, the choice to upgrade to a Switch OLED is tricky. If you always play on the TV, there’s absolutely no point in buying this one, as there’s no difference in the dock’s output quality. It’s going to look the same as it always has, as this is most definitely not the rumored upgrade to 4K. But even if you’re a handheld player it’s not a must-have, unless you’ve given up on your original Switch because you just really, really hate LCD displays, or absolutely need more than five hours of battery life.

Best Selling Pressure Washers HandyGuyPros
Here are the best pressure washers for practically any budget. We spent a lot of time reviewing specifications and comparing models. Therefore, we hope that our specially selected list of top pressure washers helps you find the right one for the jobs you need to do.
Light-duty pressure washers
Let’s begin with budget-friendly power washers. These are good for light to medium-duty tasks like washing the car and cleaning a deck. Many of them can strip paint if you need to prepare a surface. Some are powerful enough for cleaning concrete. Most are electric-powered.
Worx WG629.9 Hydroshot 20V 2.0 Ah 320 PSI Cordless Portable Power Cleaner
The Worx Hydroshot is a light-duty surface cleaner. It magnifies the pressure from your garden hose up to eight times. This allows you to clean bikes, boots, tools, and more. Best of all, a flip of the switch lets you go back to watering the lawn.
Otherwise, you can supply it with water from a bucket or some other kind of reservoir. The battery-powered pressure washer runs on 20V Worx batteries. These are the same ones that other WORX power tools use. The kit comes with two batteries, a charger, and a turbo nozzle.
TACKLIFE Pressure Washer, High Efficiency 1600 PSI 1.72 GPM 1400W
TACKLIFE’s pressure washer offers 2752 cleaning units of power. It’s easy to manage the pressure with the adjustable nozzle on the spray lance. Plus, it includes a detergent tank.
The 20-foot pressure hose and the 35-foot power cord give you significant reach. Moreover, the power cord has GFCI protection. This is essential as you’ll be using an electrical device with water.
Next, the trigger has a safety switch. This prevents accidents as the force of water from a pressure washer can cause injuries. Also, when you release the trigger, the pump shuts off. That protects the pump and saves electricity.
TACKLIFE also thought of the eventualities. They include extra washers and a gasket to take care of leaks. And they offer a 24-month warranty.
Karcher K3 Follow-Me Electric Power Pressure Washer with 4 Rolling Wheels, 1800 PSI, 1.3 GPM
The compact Karcher K3 follows after you on its four wheels. But don’t let its tiny size fool you. It offers 2340 cleaning units of power. Furthermore, it’s a Family Handyman Editor’s Choice pressure washer. It can clean your siding, driveway, and car.
This model includes typical features From Karcher like the adjustable Vario Power Spray wand, the Dirtblaster wand, and an onboard detergent tank. There are also several accessories you can buy to extend its capabilities.
Sun Joe SPX1500 Pressure Joe 1740 PSI 1.59 GPM Electric Pressure Washer
The Sun Joe SPX1500 and puts out 2766 cleaning units for a variety of jobs like washing your home’s exterior or your SUV. It comes with a 20-foot water hose, a 33-inch wand with adjustable nozzle, plus a 35-foot power cord with GFCI protection. It has a 2-year warranty plus it’s CSA-approved for safety.
There’s something to note about Sun Joe pressure washers. They usually come with TSS technology. TSS stands for Trigger Stop System. When you release the trigger, it stops the pump from operating. That extends the pump’s lifetime and saves electricity costs. It’s also a safety feature.
GreenWorks 2000 PSI 13 Amp 1.2 GPM Horizontal Electric Pressure Washer with Hose Reel GPW2001
The GreenWorks GPW2001 strips paint and removes stains. One of its highlights is the very quiet induction motor. Just as important, it has two detergent tanks. That’s a timesaver that means you can carry two different soaps or a double quantity of a single detergent.
The accessories include a 25-foot high-pressure hose and a 35-foot power cord. Instead of an adjustable spray wand, the lance has an assortment of tips to control the pressure. One of them is for foaming detergent. Finally, everything stores on board. It’s easy to transport if you tip it back onto its wheels.
Medium-duty pressure washers
Models with at least 3000 cleaning units of power, or over 2000 PSI and 2 GPM are considered medium-duty. Some are electric, but many are gas-powered.
Sun Joe SPX3000 Pressure Joe 2030 PSI 1.76 GPM Electric Pressure Washerround the house with 3572 cleaning units. (This rating comes from multiplying the PSI by the gallons per minute flow rate.) We wish it had a single adjustable nozzle for convenience, but instead, it comes with a set of quick-connect tips.
But there are two detergent tanks, a 20-foot hose, and a 35-foot power cord. Of course, the pressure washer has the Total Stop System to protect the pump in the user. And Sun Joe offers a Two-Year Warranty.
Sun Joe SPX3500 2300-PSI 1.48 GPM Brushless Induction Electric Pressure Washer, w/Brass Hose Connector
The Sun Joe SPX3500 offers 3404 cleaning units. That’s plenty for cleaning driveways, sidewalks, home exteriors, vehicles, and a lot more. This power is due to a durable pump and a brushless induction motor. The induction motor is quiet and runs cool compared to traditional engines.
One of its highlights is the adjustable detergent dial for the onboard tank. This nifty control lets you set the right amount of soap for the task.
Next, the spray wand comes with five quick-connected spray tips for you to choose the correct pressure. While the 0° nozzle puts out an intense stream that can strip paint, the 40° tip is perfect for rinsing the soap off a car.
Karcher K5 Premium Electric Power Pressure Washer, 2000 PSI, 1.4 GPM
Karcher’s K5 Premium is a deluxe kit with a detergent tank, a Dirtblaster spray wand, a Vario Power wand with adjustable flow, and a 25-foot hose on an integrated reel. This company makes some of the most-trusted pressure washers in the business. Part of that is due to their pump design and part of it is because of their warranty.
The N-COR pump is maintenance-free and it won’t corrode. It’s powered by a water-cooled induction motor. Moreover, Karcher offers a two-year warranty plus their Rapid Exchange Program that sends a replacement if you’re waiting for in-warranty repairs.
Simpson Cleaning MS60763-S 3100 PSI at 2.4 GPM Gas Pressure Washer
Many medium-duty and pressure washers run on gas engines. This Simpson Cleaning power washer has a Kohler RH265 OHV motor protected by a two-year warranty.
If you have a lot of cleanups to do on a regular basis, a gas pressure washer like this one lets you roam where you need to work. Although it’s noisier and needs more maintenance than an electrical power washer, it also offers a lot of power. In this case, that’s 7440 cleaning units.
It strips paint, cleans grease off the barbecue, washes mildew from siding, and takes care of the driveway. The spray wand comes with five nozzle tips to manage the pressure. There’s also a 25-foot abrasion-resistant pressure hose. All these accessories store onboard even though there’s no reel for the hose.
Briggs & Stratton Gas Pressure Washer 3100 PSI 2.5 GPM
Briggs & Stratton made this gas pressure washer with something they call Quiet Sense Technology. What this does is reduce the noise by idling the engine when you release the spray gun trigger.
Also interestingly, the Briggs & Stratton engine never requires an oil change. All you have to do is check the level and add more if needed. The package includes four tips, a 30-foot hose, and a detergent tank.
Heavy-duty pressure washers
Heavy-duty pressure washers start with specs like 3000 PSI and 3GPM. These are what the pros use for professional cleaning services, property maintenance, and restaurant cleanup.
Shark HPB-353007A 3,000 PSI 3.5 GPM Electric Hot Water Industrial Series Pressure Washer
The Shark HPB-353007A3 electric power washer has a belt-driven Karcher pump and a diesel heater. It’s especially nice for indoor cleanup of greasy surfaces. That’s because it’s not as noisy and doesn’t create the same amount of fumes as a gas-powered pressure washer.
Moreover, this model is more compact than many of its competitors. It has a design similar to a hand truck. And it comes with a one-year warranty on parts, three-year warranty on the coil, and a seven-year warranty on the pump.
Briggs & Stratton Gas Pressure Washer 4000 PSI 4.0 GPM
The Briggs & Stratton 4000 PSI pressure washer is cold water only. There’s no heater. But it has impressive specifications. First, it uses an Annovi Reverberi Triplex Pump for 16,000 cleaning units of power. But you can lower the pressure to a mere 300 PSI for delicate jobs.
Additionally, it includes a rugged 50-foot hose and five quick-connect tips. One of the tips is for foaming detergent. Although it’s a commercial model, it also comes with a 24-month consumer warranty.
Dirt Killer H3612 Hot Water Gas Industrial Pressure Washer
The Dirt Killer H3612 has 14,700 cleaning units of power. That amount of force cleans up graffiti in an instant. But it also works well for washing concrete floors and building exteriors.
This pressure washer puts out 3500 psi with a flow rate of 4.2 gallons per minute. Much of its power is due to the Kranzle pump. This pump won’t be damaged if water freezes inside, and it can stay in bypass for hours plus run dry without being damaged.
But it’s a Honda GX-LXE 13HP OHV engine with electric start that runs the pressure washer. There’s also a diesel heater for the hot water tank. You can set the temperature high enough to use steam, too.
Conclusion
As you shop for the best pressure washer, there’s only one thing to keep in mind. All you need to know is the type of jobs you plan to do with it. Then you’ll know if you want hot water or not, a detergent tank, or other accessories. You also be able to decide how much power you need. We hope that our reviews today helped you find the right pressure washer for all your surface cleaning tasks.

Is Star Wars Jedi Survivor Steam Deck compatible?
Tumblr media
Is Star Wars Jedi Survivor Steam Deck compatible? Fallen Order is playable on Valve’s portable powerhouse, but you’re probably wondering if the same applies to its sequel. While we’ll need to wait and see if it earns potential Verified status, we’re already looking into whether you can play Star Wars Jedi Survivor on Steam Deck. Even if you’re able to get EA’s sci-fi adventure running on Steam Deck, Star Wars Jedi Survivor system requirements may cause a disturbance in the force. The Fallen Order sequel takes up a whopping 155GB of storage space, meaning you won’t be able to install it on the cheaper 64GB model. You could get around this by picking up one of the best Steam Deck microSD card picks, but that’ll add extra expense to the experience. Is Star Wars Jedi Survivor Steam Deck compatible? Yes, Star Wars Jedi Survivor is Steam Deck compatible, and graphics driver updates are already available for the intergalactic adventure. SteamOS beta version 3.4.7 explicitly mentions “performance improvements” in relation to the game, meaning it’ll likely work on Valve’s handheld from day one. That said, attempting to boost fps while playing Star Wars Jedi Survivor on Steam Deck might be a struggle, as those specs mentioned above are menacing. On PC, you’ll need an Nvidia RTX 2070 to match Respawn Entertainment’s recommended requirements, so the Deck’s AMD APU could break a sweat even at 720p. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmj3ty-Wt48 We’ll be sharing our best Star Wars Jedi Survivor settings suggestions soon, and the right options may help you fight off dark forces on PC and Steam Deck. Wondering if you should spend credits on the sequel? Our Star Wars Jedi Survivor review says Cal Kestis’ latest adventure absolutely stacks up, but we’ve outlined a few imperfections that are worth considering. Looking to pick up great add-ons for Valve’s handheld? Check out our best Steam Deck accessories list and power up your portable with nifty extras. Read the full article
