confession: TRoS ruined kylo/ben for me, despite not liking him previously.
when i watched TFA in the movie theater, i absolutely hated kylo ren (not in an "anti" way, it's simply a sign of a good villian). TLJ put him on thin ice with me because like 🤢 re*lo foreshadowing (yes in an anti way, but not the point of this post so dont @ me) but i otherwise still loved to hate him, even if i didn't understand why so many fans liked him. but then the dreaded TRoS happened and i was like... "huh, i miss kylo ren?"
i mean, i know that character development is a thing, but... what happened to my darth tantrum? what happened to "let the past die, kill it if you have to"? like, it baffles me that he ends TLJ having killed his master, been rejected by rey and rejected her in turn (again), claimed the title of supreme leader, and then been publicly humiliated by his uncle/ex-master—and then in TRoS he just... ditches everything he has achieved, lets go of all the perceived wrongs against him, reverts to ben, and kisses rey? and oh by the way it was Palpatine, still, all along?? isnt this supposed to be a new story?????
obviously he wouldn't end the final movie of the trilogy in the same as he was halfway through or at the start, but i think it's stupid that he had so much build up as a villain, actively rejecting the light side and redemption at every single turn—and he had many, many opportunities—only to spend most of the third movie on the side of the light, helping to defeat the exact same villain that was defeated three movies ago
like yeah, okay, he "finished vader's business" and "killed the past" by finally defeating darth sidious, but idk... the guy started out the trilogy so determined to uphold vader's legacy that he led the slaughter of every student at luke's temple a la anakin at the end of RotS, that he murdered and tortured innocents for years, and instead of realizing that "letting the past die" includes vader's legacy and making his own way, redeemed or not but still remaining kylo—or, hell, even evolving his ambition into the determination to outdo vader where vader fell short; killing the past by becoming the new, more powerful evil—he, what???? learns that he can just shed years of deliberate bad choices because none of it was his fault anyways, and all he has to do is repeat the past to be redeemed because he is just doomed to be an echo of his ancestors that contributes nothing genuinely new to his family history, anyways?
yeah i preferred the unstable and immature yet wildly overpowered possible-sociopath on the cusp of shedding his blinders and coming into his own...

One thing that I really love about The Acolyte is the way in which Osha's story emerges as a dark mirror to Rey's in TLJ.
With TLJ, I found there was something really effective in how Johnson wrote Rey's temptation not as her being a mere 30 Anger Points from turning Dark Side, but as her being at risk of making a terrible mistake which would lead to the Dark. Which, for me, is very much the sum of Osha's decisions in the last act of The Acolyte. She doesn't pledge herself to the fight for Dark Side supremacy and vow to crush democracy, but she does choose the self-serving and unforgiving option.
Qimir's argument isn't about Powah, in the Sheev sense. He's not pitching her supremacy over the Galaxy. Instead, he pushes Osha to claim a subtler kind of power, and to decide that, contrary to Jedi ideology, she has the right to be judge, jury and executioner, and to dole out death to those who hurt or impede her. That's why, when she confronts him about his killings, he doesn't even address the idea that murdering any of the Jedi was wrong. Yord wronged her, Jecki wouldn't have been what Osha wanted her to be. Through his prism, that's all it takes for him, and Osha, to be justified in killing.
Moreover, in murdering Sol, Osha gives Qimir the leverage to make her his pupil, at the cost of Mae's memories - which is to say that, just as Rey would've done had she gone along with Kylo's offer, she sacrifices the last other person she cared about. Perhaps Mae will gain peace with Vernestra (though I have my doubts there), but she's doing so having given up well over a decade of the memories that make her who she is. Incidentally for extra horror, just watch Severance and then consider this story in light of that show's subject matter.
Obviously there are major differences, but ultimately it comes down to the same choice, presented to a young woman, along with the sad truth about her family.

i feel like no one gets kylo ren like i do
okay so . i have this full on argument in my mind about how mischaracterized kylo ren is in most ao3 fics (not only reylo fics but also kylo x reader ones) and it drives me NUTS that no one sees it
kylo is always described as this really mean guy, really assertive and most importantly, SO MEAN?! like he often insults his love interest, calling her (of course its women) a bitch/cvnt/slut , physically abusing her sometimes etc and i feel like people who write this are completely missing the point of the whole reylo trilogy and dynamic . or even on a y/n level they just DONT GET HIS CHARACTER
hear me out: kylo ren is the BIGGEST LOSER EVER !! he puts on a face willingly because he wants to appeal to certain standards set by his bloodline (being anakin's grandson) and by snoke . but in reality he's just so depressed and needs a hug? i dont get how people are going to portray him as the worst guy on literal earth and then make him a romantic love interest like . HOW?
his characterization also appeals to the heavily heteronormative myth of the attractive mean toxic guy that the girl falls in love with and she "cant help it", she feels drawn to him wtv. like?? its so unrealistic and its a weird projection of dirty fantasies that dont make sense with the character himself (+ its toxic AF why would you do that.)
ALSOOOO i dont get how people are gonna write him like this because how does this create a healthy foundation or even a happy ending in a fic? its like overnight his character shifts completely and from one chapter to the other he's actually head over heels and worships y/n or rey. like???? its so underwhelming too and anti-climactic bc you dont get to even LIKE the character before they jump to a happy relationship without giving him any depth or dimension its just so weird !!!!
MY BOY DESERVES BETTER FREE HIM

the two things that nobody will care about, but I care very much about, are 1) the injustice of Dune being considered a good franchise and 2) the injustice of The Last Jedi being called “a bad movie.”
so you know, block those tags because I can’t be quiet about them

I feel like there should be some kind of small but lustrous lifetime achievement award for all the people who worked to make Phasma so very shiny in The Last Jedi. Every time I see her in a frame of that movie I go "holy crap she's so reflective, how much VFX work did it take to get those reflections just right?"
