Star Wars Hunters: Battle for the Arena Review!
Battles! Bacta! Brawling! And grudges! Check out Sal's review of Star Wars Hunters: Battle for the Arena! #StarWarsHunters #StarWarsBooks
“You are a formidable fighter! May the Forces be around you!”J-3DI When Rieve comes to the arena to become a Hunter in the Vespaara arena, she will have to learn more than just fighting. A great Hunter must be cunning, analytical, and work effectively with their team. Rieve has always been a loner, but in the arena, she just might learn what it means to be a part of a team. Battles! Bacta!…

Lesser Known Legends...
...of the Inner Sphere and Beyond: everyone knows their The Bounty Hunter and their Black Marauder, but some notables never seem to really find the fame they deserve. For instance...
"The Grinch", name unknown, attacked Christmas tree farms in a pine-green Hatchetman across the Commonwealth in the years following the Jihad; speculated to have been disgruntled with the omnipresent holiday season sales advertising. Never apprehended. The damage was estimated to have been in the tens of millions.
Willy Divou, the "Red Paper Clip Bandit". Started in a raggedy CattleMaster, broke into military bases ranging from the Capellan Confederation to the furthest reaches of the Combine, swapping for a new, better 'mech each time. Arrested and executed after being baited with a rumors of an 'experimental improved Atlas'.
Theodora Mirene, the "Brick Wall". A Civil War mercenary whose grotesquely modified Stalker avoided differing weapons restrictions and parts availability in the various systems she operated in by not having any. She butted and body-checked over twenty enemy 'mechs down over her career, before retiring from battle strain.
Toni Anathol, "The Solaris Menace". Active from 2904-6 as the only person to ever reach double digits (27, all told) for streaking in the 'mech arenas. Was captured when he twisted an ankle brutally mid-run, but fans demanded his release. His career was over after that, though he received the only official Solaris Medal of Spontaneity.
"The Possum Pilot", spotted across numerous battlefields but consistent in their tactics during the Andurien Crisis. Always piloted an Archer so dilapidated as to appear to be a wreck, then sprung up and fired on unsuspecting FWL troops. Killed when stepped on by a Zeus that took them for underfoot wreckage. Body was unidentifiable.
Susan Ravenwater, "The Party Bus", a Hell's Horses pilot active during STAMPEDE with a dicey strategy of ordering every Elemental in their Nova onto their 'mech, and moving as a flanker to drop twenty-five Elementals into the fight when the enemy was fighting what they assumed was elements of a standard Star.
"Big" Boots A. Tajag, a mercenary for the Dominion during their war against the Combine. A dedicated Trebuchet pilot who practiced the self-taught "art of 'mech-jitsu". Never scored a confirmed kill in the field: only ever knocked over or tripped enemy 'mechs. Died to a Locust whose reverse knee joints baffled his technique.
Jared Hada, the "Turtle of Terror". Piloted a massive, over-armored Rifleman which would drop into planetside docks and depots, firing on anyone trying to enter or leave until a ransom was paid for access to the supplies. This worked until a Lyran supply depot simply waited him out, breaking in and arresting him when he fell asleep during the standoff.

Welp, having a hard time finishing the Star Wars Hunters book Battle for the Arena. I really liked the world building of the planet of Vesparra, like…a tourist trap version of Nar Shaddaa. All the fun of Hutt lawlessness without most of its extreme 'downsides.' Podracing, Huttball, and Hunters with gambling and clubs and music…just an illicit Disney World.
The writing was…rather meh though. Rieve's story was a bit of teen drama about her uncertainty, extreme self doubt (perhaps spurred by the Force and her inner dark side)…but it started to drag in the teen drama side of things. Someone is either gaslighting her or hunting her…and Rieve just…keeps on with things. I like that Hunter fights are her day job and making that pretty normal because I love the verisimilitude of there being punch clock jobs in a galaxy far, far away…but she's also a Star Wars protagonist and needs to be a bit more proactive. Perhaps her distrust of authority figures and that no authority figure really had helped her before is a part of not asking for help…but again, she's Force Sensitive Star Wars protagonist she needs to do things actively.
And…look, this is two years after Endor, I like that Rieve doesn't understand her powers, that eldritch feeling of untrained Force Sensitivity. But look, there is a galactic wide fame guy with Force powers. Every story doesn't need Luke and the rest of the Skywalker clan, but stories where he could and perhaps SHOULD show up and he doesn't without adequate explanation are odd. If yer havin' problems with your uncontrolled Force powers, maybe…just maybe, you should try to get in touch with the Jedi the New Republic has plastered over every holochannel since Endor. Send a message to the NR to care of Luke Skywalker, I'm pretty sure somebody would forward it along for you.

Welcome to the Overworked Blorbo Battle Preliminary Round!
Many characters were submitted for this tournament so, in order to allow as many different blorbos into the bracket as I can, I’ve had to limit them to one per series. For most, i just included the most highly submitted character but there were a number of series with characters who had the same (or very similar) number of submissions. Therefore, I’ve created a preliminary round for you to vote on which character from each series gets to enter the bracket.
There will be 37 polls lasting 1 week each.
The polls will be separated into 3 waves. Each wave will be posted 24 hours after the previous.
The first wave will begin on Tuesday the 27th of June at 3PM BST
I've tried my best to only include official images for all of the characters on the polls but I'm not familiar with every series listed so, when the polls go up, if you notice I've used a fanart or cosplay image without permission or credit please let me know and I'll add credit and correct it for any future appearances of that character.
I apologise if I’ve accidentally spelled something wrong or used a wrong name for something, I’m not familiar with every series listed.
The matchups are listed under the read more

Three other Star Wars books I finished recently: - Shadow of the Sith is a book that I feel like I have more things to say about the experience of reading it than I do about the actual content of the story.  Much of this comes down to that it’s covering things I don’t care about (connecting the OT to the ST, by focusing on Dathan/Miramir as Rey’s parents, on Ochi of Bestoon, on the Acolytes of the Beyond), that I think it was necessary for me to listen to this book as an audiobook rather than reading as text to get through it, that I don’t know that it actually had anything to say about Luke or Lando. It was a fun experience in audio form, I was genuinely sad to see it end by the time I got to the final chapters, the reader was excellent for the story, but it’s one where I just don’t have anything to say about the story, but that may be an entirely personal reaction.  That’s about the best I can do for an objective reaction--it’s a book that I think depends on your mindset going in and what you’re looking for and how you experience it. - Quest for the Hidden City was cute!  It’s a solid young reader’s story, it’s charm only held back by that you’re being introduced to another onslaught of new characters that will only get so much screentime.  I had fun with it, but I went in expecting it to be on the same level as the other High Republic books--if you enjoy them, you’ll enjoy this one! - Hunters: Battle for the Arena is a book I picked up pretty much purely because the audiobook was sitting right there to check out and I got hyped up on the idea of being a SW canon novels completionist again, despite knowing that’s only going to lead to pain.  I got through it by not taking it at all seriously and a lovely reader, because otherwise it’s just very clearly a mobile game tie-in that never reaches any kind of emotional resonance and does not give a single shit about how Star Wars worldbuilding works.  I genuinely don’t hate it, but I’m pretty much just chucking it into the “promotional material for the mobile game that no one should take seriously at all”.  (The audiobook reader was great, though.  <3)

Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Bracket Match 13
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hareck | Identity: mlnb | Media: War of the Bounty Hunters
Hareck is a member of Boussh’s queer found family. They were exiled from Uba IV for helping their spouse Ilini hide the body of their abusive father. A bounty hunter crew, they were hired by Crimson Dawn to kill the entire executive board of the Tagge Corporation. During this attack, Illini and Hareck spared a group of young Tagge Corporation “interns” for just being kids, which made them both feel uneasy about the job. Domina Tagge was the only survivor of this attack, and for their lives and a promise of their exile being rescinded, they betrayed Crimson Dawn and got a new job working for Domina. They later defended Domina from a Crimson Dawn coup.
From the script notes shared by Alyssa Wong, he is “Hulking and vaguely apologetic” and “the level-headed friend who's constantly doing damage control. Also, an excellent cook.”
Feyr Jos’han | Identity: nonbinary | Media: Hunters Battle for the Arena
Feyr Jos’han was a Correlian smuggler/fence who regularly hired the orphan Rieve as a courier.  They paid well and was respected by Rieve. Towards the end of the Galactic Civil War, they broke their neutrality and tasked Rieve to deliver a package of medical supplies they’d obtained through a mistake to the Alliance. Rieve was attacked by guards of the original purchaser of the product, causing her to lash out with the dark side. She fled Corellia after such a show of power. Despite this, Rieve continued to think well of Feyr.
When Feyr told Rieve they had sided with the Alliance, Rieve was very surprised about this. They said that they were tired of the occupation of Corellia.

Favorite moment in each Star Wars movie?
I've been loving these questions lately! Not sure if you're all the same anon or multiple folks, but regardless, I really appreciate them.
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Tumblr media
I mean, how can it not be the Duel of the Fates? The music! The ridiculous but fun as hell acrobatic choreography! The drama! I love the Prequel Trilogy when it feels the most operatic and that's definitely the case here.
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Tumblr media
Attack of the Clone is my least favorite live action Star Wars film. I think it has some great ideas, but it was rough in 2002 and visually it looks uglier with each passing year. That being said, I still find the arena battle on Geonosis to be fun as hell. There's just something special about throwing these Jedi, droids, flying termite people, giant alien monsters, Mandalorian bounty hunters, and eventually drop ships of clone troopers up against each other in a dusty coliseum that scratches a very special fantasy action itch.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Tumblr media
Ian McDiarmid's delightfully evil performance in Revenge of the Sith is one of my favorite things in all of Star Wars and his triumphant speech that fully transforms the Republic into the fascist Galactic Empire is incredible. Add in John Williams's tragic choral score and Padme Amidala's tearful admittance of democracy's defeat at the hands of authoritarianism and you have movie magic and what might be my favorite moment from the Prequel Trilogy.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Tumblr media
I have the least opinions about Solo: A Star Wars Story of any Star Wars film. It's a solidly fine film that does little to impress or offend for most of its run time. The one area where I really feel the movie spark to life though is the first meeting between Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian and Alden Ehnrenreich's Han Solo over a game of Sabacc. Both actors bring such a fun spark to these characters that feels original but still connected to the long shadow of their original counterparts. It's also the best directed sequence in the film and maybe the only moment that leans into the space crime comedy that Solo seemed desperate to achieve.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Tumblr media
This is maybe an odd choice, but I love the first scene of Rogue One. I find most of this spin off film to be a little bit impersonal and sterile until we get to the big explosive (and admittedly fun) finale, but the opening confrontation between Orson Krennic and Galen Erso is really great. Gareth Edwards shoots it all with a grounded naturalism that feels tense and eerie in a way Star Wars films rarely are and Madds Mikkelson and Ben Mendehlson have such strong, dramatic chemistry. It's a moment that communicates so much about the relationship between these two men with so little and is really the storytelling high point of the film.
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Tumblr media
It's honestly a testament to how great the last half hour of A New Hope is that despite the fact that I've seen this movie likely more than any other movie in existence, I still find myself on the edge of my seat. Even thinking about the final stretch of Luke flying his X-Wing down the Empire's trench while Vader gains ever closer and closer still gives me chills. I cannot imagine the cheers that must have erupted in theaters across the world in the summer of 1977 when Han makes his surprise last minute rescue. It's just incredible film making on every level and I don't know if it'll ever be surpassed.
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Tumblr media
Picking a favorite moment in The Empire Strikes Back is such a hard task, but I keep finding myself going back to the brilliant confrontation between Luke and Vader in Cloud City. Not only is it a beautifully shot and choreographed lightsaber duel, but it contains some of the most influential and emotionally devastating character beats in the saga. It's another instance of absolutely peak Star Wars.
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Tumblr media
Even with the beyond silly "NO!" dubbed over in the recent releases of Return of the Jedi, Vader's final rejection of Palpatine to rescue his son is still one of the moments of saga that can move me to tears despite having seen it dozens of times. There's just such incredible catharsis in this final reconciliation between father and son and it closes the best arc of the Original Trilogy off in such satisfying faction.
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Tumblr media
I wholeheartedly think that the first thirty minutes or so of The Force Awakens are absolutely masterful filmmaking and arguably the best work of JJ Abrams's directorial career. While the opening battle sequence does a wonderful job of introducing some of the movie's cast, it's really Rey's mostly wordless introduction that felt instantly spellbinding and still wows me to this day. In several gorgeous minutes we learn so much about this lonely woman who scavengers to survive in the wreckage of classic franchise iconography (one of the Sequel Trilogy's many beautifully meta moments) and John Williams's crafts what is easily one of the best Star Wars themes of all time with a tinkling of wonder and mystery.
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
Tumblr media
Like The Empire Strikes Back, picking a single moment that's my favorite in The Last Jedi is incredibly difficult. While there are undeniably rough patches, The Last Jedi has an abundance of absolutely iconic Star Wars scenes. I mean: Paige Tico's sacrifice; the throne room confrontation with Kylo, Rey, and Snoke; Luke and Yoda's discussion about the meaning of the legacy of the Jedi; the Holdo maneuver, Leia and Luke's reunion, the ending shot of Broom Boy. There's so many beats that I find myself wowed by over half a decade after the movie first premiered. But, my favorite has to be Kylo and Luke's Kurosawa inspired duel on the salt plains of Crait. I love the tense, minimalist choreography and stellar performances by Adam Driver and Mark Hamill, but I love the ending reveal the most. It completes Luke's wonderfully complex character arc in truly beautiful fashion.
Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
Tumblr media
It's absolutely the Force Flash Duel. Little competition. Yes, this movie is a mess and it fails to meet imost of its emotional, thematic, or mythological goals, but I think the evolution of Rey and Kylo's connection in the Force expanding into a confrontation that literally spills across space and time is such a smart and inventive idea and to me it feels like the most creatively successful moment in the film. Also it's the only time in the whole trilogy that we see Kylo duel with his mask on? Which feels important even if I'm not sure why.

Star Wars: Hunters Gets June Release Date For Switch In New Trailer
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/star-wars-hunters-gets-june-release-date-for-switch-in-new-trailer/
Star Wars: Hunters Gets June Release Date For Switch In New Trailer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zynga has released a new trailer for its upcoming competitive multiplayer game, Star Wars: Hunters, revealing a June 4 release date alongside a new cinematic look at some of the characters. Star Wars: Hunters will hit Switch and iOS and Android devices on that day, giving players the chance to compete with others in iconic locations like the forest moon of Endor, the icy planet of Hoth, and elsewhere while controlling Hunters like J-3DI, a droid who thinks he’s a Jedi, Utooni which is two Jawas stacked on top of each other in a trench coat, and more.
Zynga says each Hunter boasts their own unique set of abilities to aid them in the Arena, which is the marquee attraction of the new planet of Vespaara. “Star Wars: Hunters features a number of game modes for players to test their mettle, such as Squad Brawl, in which opposing teams will battle to rack up the most eliminations, and Trophy Chase, where competing teams will vie for control of the elusive droid TR-F33,” a press release reads.
Check out the action in the new Star Wars: Hunters trailer below:
[embedded content]
“We are beyond excited to welcome fans across the globe to Vespaara,” Zynga vice president Sam Cooper writes in a press release. “We can’t wait for gamers to meet our Hunters and hop into the Arena.
