Steamy Saturday
"A private nurse learns the truth about men!"
"A nurse's job is to pamper and please men. . . . But Kay Taylor was too beautiful, too inflammable herself, to soothe any man. . . ."
"Kay needed pampering herself, and as a private nurse, she was able to find it, with the husband of one patient and the sweetheart of another. . . ."
The premise for Wayward Nurse, a Venus Books publication, "first with the best in original love fiction," published by Star Guidance, Inc. in 1953, is about as steamy as it gets. Kay Taylor, a confused and love-hungry private nurse for wealthy clients, plows through one train-wreck romance after another until finally ending up with Mike, "for all her life," on a boat that is apparently being followed by a shark (a metaphor, no doubt) -- "And on creaked the mast, on gurgled the great, undulant, golden sea. . . ." (another suggestive metaphor).
Wayward Nurse, first published in 1952 by another pulp publisher Cameo Books, was written by Norman Bligh, one of the many the pseudonyms of the ultra-prolific pulp novelist William Arthur Neubauer (1916-1982). We think the cover art by noted American magazine and pulp-cover artist Rudolph Belarski (1900-1983) is perhaps the second most provocative cover in our nurse romance collection of over 500 titles. The most provocative will be presented in coming weeks, so stay tuned. And we are just tickled that the publisher made the effort to mention that the highly provocative (for the early 1950s) photograph on the back cover of a couple in their swimsuits (or is it their underwear!) was "Specially posed by professional models" -- as if to say, no nurses were harmed in the making of this photograph. Delightful!

The Star Wars prequels are about a teenage boy whose profound feelings of love, loss, and abandonment go utterly ignored by a religious organization that instead demanded he repress his emotions rather than validate them and help him work through them... allowing a fascist autocrat to scoop him up, offer him the care and guidance he needed all his life, and sway him into political extremism.
"The prequels are the story of an arrogant religion who get a hold of the Messiah and then hand him over to the Devil." —So Uncivilized
The Jedi may have upheld justice and order, but they also didn't give a damn about your emotional well-being, mental health, self-care, or individuality. The Sith may have sought to commit unspeakable evils, but they won over the aimless and forsaken to their cause by expressing a facsimile of care for your personhood and empowering you to take what you so desperately needed instead of waiting for someone to give it to you.
This is why the Star Wars prequels are important. Even if the movies themselves are hilariously bad, the lessons they're trying to impart through the story they tell are more relevant now than ever before. We are seeing this pattern play out today through GamerGate, Sweet Baby Inc Detected, the Proud Boys, the Incel movement, and countless other extremist causes. We've seen this pattern repeat endlessly throughout history, with violent gangs, religious crusades, and bloodthirsty militaries.
The wellbeing of men matters. We need to take care of them, especially when they break from the hypermasculine mold in some way or haven't benefitted from the privilege that society tends to grant men. If we decide not to give a shit about men in need, then each one we abandon is one we forsake to the wolves. And all the wolves need do to win him over is to give him a pat on the back, a listening ear, and a finger pointed directly at those of us who left him behind to explain all of the ills he's suffered in his life.
Edit:
pulling this out of the tags in case any ne'er-do-well rebloggers try to turn this into a misogynistic gotcha against women's rights:
#If you use this to try and clapback against feminism kindly fuck off #Women’s issues are also real as fuck #Instead of invalidating women’s lived experiences of suffering, go volunteer at a men’s shelter or do gang member outreach #There are so many men’s causes that are deserving of your energy more than women deserve your vitriol #The patriarchy oppresses us all and it will not fall as long as we stand divided

⸻⸻ ﹕ WELCOME TO ⠀ › ⠀ GLASSHOUSE : EXTENDED.
step into the mesmerizing world of GLASSHOUSE INCORPORATED, or just GLASSHOUSE as fans lovingly call it, a fictional entertainment powerhouse born in 2008 under the genius of the one and only DO GA-IN. this creative hub isn't your run-of-the-mill company; it's a dynamic force blending music, modelling, and acting into an electrifying mix.
GLASSHOUSE wears many hats – record label, talent agency, music production wizard. picture this: over ten groundbreaking groups emerged from its ranks during its golden era. at the heart of it all was the debut of LILYPAD, a four-member girl group that rocked the stage and put GLASSHOUSE on the map with a splash of resources and recognition. under the skilled guidance of DO GA-IN, GLASSHOUSE thrived, earning praise for its ability to produce star power and shape the careers of emerging artists.
fast forward to 2015, and a bombshell announcement: GA-IN, the founder extraordinaire, was taking a step back. in her place? none other than GRACE, the youngest member from LILYPAD. the news rattled cages, sparking protests and even a temporary boycott, but GLASSHOUSE weathered the storm, proving that change, though unexpected, is part of the game.
beyond the glitz and glamour, GLASSHOUSE is known for its tight-knit artist community. the company's knack for nurturing talent has created a haven where producers and staff members flourish. it's a vibe, a family, a place where creativity meets comfort.
but, like any good story, there's a flip side. GLASSHOUSE has faced its fair share of critique for the age-old issue of overworking artists. it's a tightrope walk – being hailed for its artist-friendly atmosphere while catching flak for potential burnout. this contradiction underscores the complexities within the entertainment industry and prompts ongoing conversations about the well-being of artists.
in the ever-evolving narrative of GLASSHOUSE INC, one thing remains clear: this fictional giant is a testament to the pulsating rhythm of the entertainment industry. a story marked by rise, fall, and redemption, GLASSHOUSE invites you into its world, where dreams are spun, challenges are faced head-on, and the show goes on.
GLASSHOUSE INC is more than just a building; it's a mesmerizing architectural marvel that defies traditions. as you approach the structure, its brilliance becomes immediately apparent. a large building with set glass walls dominates the skyline, reflecting the surrounding structures and the vast expanse of sky. the play of light and reflections on its mirrored surface sets it apart, making it a standout gem in the urban landscape.
the exterior design is a testament to modern aesthetics, with sleek lines and a contemporary feel. the entire structure is encased in mirrors, creating a striking visual effect as it mirrors the cityscape, seamlessly blending into the environment while simultaneously standing out. this unique choice of materials adds an element of luxury and reinforces the company's commitment to innovation and uniqueness.
surrounded by a concrete jungle, GLASSHOUSE offers a breath of fresh air, literally. lush greenery in the form of trees envelops the building, providing a natural contrast to the urban setting. those trees serve as a visual break, creating a pleasant balance between nature and modernity. it's an intended nod to the company's dedication to creating a comfortable and inviting space for both its artists and the public.
inside GLASSHOUSE, they've got a knack for making things look exotic. you walk in, and there's this vibe like you're in a fancy jungle. they've strategically placed wild plants around, and it's like a mini nature escape right in the middle of the city chaos. it's not just by chance – they've done it on purpose to bring a bit of calmness into the busy city life. so, as you're strolling by, you get glimpses of greenery that make you forget you're in the middle of a concrete jungle. it's their way of saying, " hey, we're not just about business; we've got a bit of nature tucked in here, too. "
in some areas of GLASSHOUSE, the mirrored facade gives way to sections without windows, providing a mysterious allure. behind these walls lie carefully curated displays of plants that are visible to the public. this intentional blend of nature and architecture invites curiosity, offering a glimpse into the creative essence of GLASSHOUSE.
overall, GLASSHOUSE is more than a corporate headquarters; it's a symbol of sophistication, innovation, and a balanced coexistence with nature. the mirrored exterior reflects the surroundings and the company's commitment to pushing boundaries and creating an environment that captivates the imagination. as the sun sets, the building transforms into a dazzling spectacle, capturing the essence of GLASSHOUSE INC – a beacon of creativity in the heart of the city.

Sam lived with his mother.
THE CHANGE
Sam was never predisposed to an unsavory lifestyle, instead living out his life with his mother, her new husband, and his two step-siblings.
THE DIFFERENCE
Instead of crime, he went the opposite direction, going through the motions immediately after graduating so that he could join the NYPD.
He specifically favors working within the community, never straying too far from your standard beat cop type positions. Sam is well known to be the first to respond to whatever comes over the radio.
He and Erin never moved into that apartment building, having the guidance his mother and stepfather could offer when they struck out on their own with Charlie. As such, no fire would ruin his family.
Though he and Erin didn't last, Sam is happy with his now 22 year old son and the small two bedroom they dwell in off Rockaway Beach.
Sam has a honest life with many friends. His door is always open to those who need him, and his home has become a safe space for many of Charlie's friends in trying times.
THE CONSISTENCY
Sam loves to cook and bake.
Dad jokes are everything.
Monsters Inc. is the best movie to have ever been made.
Breakfast Club is a joke.
He is still an admirer of Star Wars and Star Trek.

Foreigners give babies to ‘Moonies’ The Anniston Star January 23, 1989
MOBILE (AP) – An investigator with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Department remains baffled by three adoption cases involving foreign couples that a Unification Church member said was motivated simply by love. “Why have these people come from these different countries to give their children to these particular people?” said Lark Dodd. But Ms. Dodd said her investigation into the cases was closed since no wrongdoing was discovered. Two of the foreign couples who traveled to Mobile to have their babies gave custody of the newborns to Unification Church members. A third couple returned to Canada with their infant son after the state launched an investigation. An attorney for the Unification church said the church has not arranged the adoptions or instructed members to have babies and give them to church members. “To the best of my knowledge these relationships were developed by the individuals themselves,” with no guidance from the church, said David Hagar, an attorney at the Unification Church’s New York office. Workers at Spring Hill Memorial Hospital told The Birmingham News that the Canadian woman refused to look at the 9-pound, 12-ounce baby boy she gave birth to on Sept. 21 and told them another woman would pick up the infant.
The bewilderment of hospital officials heightened when a 58-year-old woman appeared, saying she would take custody. “They had no adoption papers,” said Brenda Hutchison, clinical supervisor of the hospital’s pediatric department. “We had nothing that said this woman could have the baby.” While pondering the situation, hospital workers recalled a similar case just two weeks before. A woman from France had a baby boy and said she was giving the baby as a gift to a woman who would pick the child up. That case did have legal adoption papers. “They said, ‘God told me to do this’,” Ms. Hutchison said. “They both said these babies were gifts.” Interviews with law enforcement, hospital and Unification Church officials revealed the adoption cases involved the “Moonies” – followers of Unification Church leader Sun Myung Moon. Church members in Bayou La Batre, a hub for Unification Church activity in Alabama, paid for couples to fly to Mobile from Austria, Canada and France to have their babies born as U.S. citizens. Then church members in the coastal community filed for adoption, authorities said. “There’s nothing strange or unusual about the church,” said Martin Porter, president and chairman of Master Marine Inc., a Unification Church-owned shipbuilding business in Bayou La Batre.
Porter said that includes bringing church members from other countries to Mobile to have their babies and give them to Porter and Master Marine’s vice president, Paul Werner.
Porter explained the motive for such a gift simply: “Why would you do that (give a baby up for adoption to a specific person)?” he asked. “It would be because you have a very deep love for the person. It would only be because they wanted to.” In addition to the babies born in September that Porter and Werner filed to adopt, four months earlier Werner filed for adoption of a baby boy whose mother came from Austria and gave birth at the University of South Alabama Hospital, said Ms. Dodd.
The three adoption cases prompted the state Department of Human Resources to investigate.
The couple from Canada were forced by a court order to remain in the United States while the case was investigated and their baby was put in state custody. After nearly two months, the couple dropped the adoption procedure.
“They were just blown away… by the legal machinery that was going to come at them,” said Hagar, who flew to Mobile at Werner’s request: “Any time a petition for adoption is filed, we are obliged to make an investigation and report to the (probate) judge,” said Jerry Milner, supervisor of the Department of Human Resources’ office of adoptions. He declined to comment on the case specifically. But it appears the two babies adopted and living with Porter and Werner will remain in their custody, Ms. Dodd said. She said all people involved in the adoption cases were Unification Church members who knew each other personally and could have arranged the adoptions outside official church channels. It would be illegal for the church to play a role in arranging the adoption, she said.
Ms. Dodd also said Werner told her that he and Porter paid the expenses of the couples who had their babies in Mobile. To pay them a fee would violate state law against child-selling, she said.
“There’s no financial remuneration passing to anybody,” Hagar said. “This isn’t a baby auction.” Alabama Watchman Fellowship Director Craig Branch, whose evangelical ministry monitors the Unification Church, contends the adoptions must have been orchestrated by the church.

How to Choose the Best Materials for Your Kitchen Remodel
When embarking on a kitchen remodel in Brampton, selecting the right materials can make all the difference in achieving a stylish, functional, and long-lasting kitchen. Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc., a trusted name in kitchen renovation in Brampton, offers expert guidance to help you navigate the myriad of choices available. Here’s a comprehensive guide to choosing the best materials for your kitchen remodel, ensuring your investment is both practical and visually appealing.
1. Cabinetry: The Backbone of Your Kitchen
Cabinetry is one of the most critical elements in a kitchen remodel. It sets the tone for the overall aesthetic and provides essential storage. When selecting cabinets, consider:
Material: Solid wood cabinets are a timeless choice, offering durability and a classic look. Alternatively, MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) provides a more budget-friendly option without sacrificing quality.
Finish: From sleek, modern finishes to rustic, distressed looks, the finish can dramatically alter the feel of your kitchen. Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc. recommends finishes that complement your overall design theme and are easy to maintain.
Hardware: Don’t overlook the impact of cabinet hardware. Choose handles and knobs that enhance the cabinet style and provide a comfortable grip.
2. Countertops: Balancing Beauty and Functionality
Countertops are a focal point in any kitchen remodel. They must withstand daily wear and tear while adding to the room's beauty. Popular choices include:
Granite: Known for its durability and natural beauty, granite is a top choice for many kitchen renovations in Brampton. It’s heat-resistant and available in a wide range of colors and patterns.
Quartz: Engineered quartz offers the beauty of natural stone with added durability and low maintenance. It’s non-porous, making it resistant to stains and bacteria.
Butcher Block: For a warm, rustic feel, butcher block countertops are an excellent choice. They’re perfect for avid cooks who appreciate a durable, renewable surface.
3. Flooring: Durable and Stylish Options
Flooring in a kitchen remodel must endure heavy foot traffic, spills, and regular cleaning. Here are some top recommendations:
Hardwood: Timeless and elegant, hardwood floors add warmth and value to your kitchen. Opt for durable finishes to protect against moisture and scratches.
Tile: Ceramic and porcelain tiles are highly durable and come in countless styles and colors. They are water-resistant and easy to clean, making them ideal for kitchen environments.
Vinyl: Modern vinyl flooring offers impressive durability and a wide range of design options, mimicking the look of wood or stone at a fraction of the cost.
4. Backsplash: Adding Personality and Protection
The backsplash is an opportunity to infuse personality into your kitchen remodel. It also protects your walls from spills and splatters. Consider these materials:
Subway Tile: Classic and versatile, subway tiles are a popular choice for kitchen remodels in Brampton. They come in various colors and finishes, allowing for a customizable look.
Glass: For a sleek, modern appearance, glass backsplashes are a fantastic option. They reflect light, making your kitchen appear brighter and more spacious.
Natural Stone: Marble, travertine, and other natural stones add a luxurious touch to your kitchen. They require more maintenance but offer unmatched elegance.
5. Appliances: Merging Technology with Design
Selecting the right appliances is crucial in a kitchen remodel. They should integrate seamlessly with your design while providing advanced functionality. Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc. suggests considering:
Stainless Steel: A popular choice for its modern look and durability, stainless steel appliances are available in various styles and configurations to suit any kitchen design.
Energy Efficiency: Look for appliances with Energy Star ratings to save on energy costs and reduce your environmental footprint.
Smart Technology: Modern appliances with smart technology offer convenience and innovation, allowing you to control your kitchen gadgets remotely or through voice commands.
6. Lighting: Enhancing Ambiance and Functionality
Effective lighting is essential in a kitchen remodel. It not only illuminates your workspace but also enhances the overall ambiance. Consider these options:
Task Lighting: Under-cabinet lights and pendant lights provide focused illumination for cooking and food preparation areas.
Ambient Lighting: Recessed lights or chandeliers offer general lighting, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Accent Lighting: Highlight architectural features or decorative elements with accent lighting, adding depth and dimension to your kitchen.
7. Sinks and Faucets: Combining Practicality with Style
The sink and faucet are critical components of any kitchen remodel. They should be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Popular choices include:
Stainless Steel Sinks: Durable and easy to maintain, stainless steel sinks are a staple in many kitchens. They come in various configurations, such as single, double, or farmhouse styles.
Composite Sinks: Made from materials like granite or quartz, composite sinks are scratch-resistant and available in multiple colors, adding a sophisticated touch.
High-Arc Faucets: For enhanced functionality, high-arc faucets offer more clearance for washing large pots and pans. Look for models with pull-down sprayers for added convenience.
8. Kitchen Islands: Multipurpose and Stylish
A kitchen island can be a game-changer in your kitchen remodel. It provides additional workspace, storage, and seating options. When designing your island, consider:
Size and Shape: Ensure the island fits comfortably within your kitchen layout, providing ample space for movement and workflow.
Materials: Match the island countertop and cabinetry with the rest of your kitchen for a cohesive look. Alternatively, use contrasting materials to create a focal point.
Functionality: Incorporate features like a sink, cooktop, or built-in appliances to enhance the island’s utility.
9. Walls and Ceilings: Adding the Finishing Touches
The walls and ceilings in your kitchen remodel can significantly impact the overall look and feel. Consider these finishing touches:
Paint: Choose high-quality, washable paint in colors that complement your cabinetry and countertops. Light colors can make the space feel larger, while bold hues add personality.
Wallpaper: For a unique touch, consider using wallpaper on an accent wall or backsplash. Look for moisture-resistant options designed for kitchen environments.
Ceiling Treatments: Coffered or tray ceilings add architectural interest, while exposed beams or shiplap create a rustic charm.
10. Sustainability: Eco-Friendly Choices for Your Kitchen Remodel
Incorporating sustainable materials and practices into your kitchen remodel can reduce your environmental impact and create a healthier home. Consider:
Recycled Materials: Opt for recycled glass countertops or reclaimed wood cabinetry for an eco-friendly touch.
Low-VOC Products: Choose paints, finishes, and adhesives with low volatile organic compound (VOC) levels to improve indoor air quality.
Energy-Efficient Fixtures: Install energy-efficient lighting, appliances, and water-saving fixtures to conserve resources and reduce utility bills.
Conclusion
Choosing the best materials for your kitchen remodel in Brampton requires careful consideration of style, functionality, and budget. By working with a reputable company like Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc., you can ensure your kitchen renovation in Brampton meets your needs and exceeds your expectations From cabinetry and countertops to flooring and lighting, each element plays a crucial role in creating a beautiful and efficient kitchen. The Forgetful
from Leena Krohn: Kadotus (Teos, 2018)
Some remember people's faces and forget their names, some remember people's names and forget their faces. I forget both the names and the faces. It is not that I have a bad memory. I simply think more about other things than people's things, such as the petrified footsteps of the dinosaurs, or Saturn's moonlight.
In a career guidance lesson we were asked what we wanted to become as adults, and many answered: "Most important thing is being allowed to spend time with other people."
I didn't know what I wanted, only what I did not: "Most important thing is being allowed not to."
Still, to some extent I have had to, even here, in the lost-and-found office of this town, which I call Oblivion. This is, after all, an office, keeping an eye on lost items, a service occupation, though barely anyone's calling. This quiet office is where I ended up following a certain logic, inevitability, even. My days have flown in and joined one another in this Oblivion of forgotten items for so long that an entire life has become of them.
After yesterday's celebration, the last one of the summer, the streets and the parks were left littered. The yellowing lawns and the paving stones whitened by dust were speckled by wrappings stained by ketchup and grease, booze bottles and crushed beer cans, pizza boxes and cigarette butts. The sight doesn't please me, and I don't understand why people don't take the empty packages with them, as they have been able to carry them around full. In such nights as yesterday's, the townspeople forget and lose their belongings even more than usually; on park benches, trams, metro stations and the tables of cafés.
I call those people forgetters, and from their forgetting I earn my living. When someone bothers to bring in a lost item to this office, I register it, and it turns into a found item. Not everyone comes inside. On the wall of Oblivion there is a hatch, through which many items left behind by partygoers have been put during the night. I have a box in which I put all the freshly brought in items. Later I sort them according to their kind and place them on different shelves and into their own lockers. Right now there are fourteen items in the box: a key, an umbrella, an earring, an empty box, a leash, a watch, a wallet, a phone, a coffee spoon, a game, a ballet slipper, a snake skin, a pencil, and gold colored scissors.
They call them inanimate objects. I do not think that way. I believe that everything is alive, only in a multitude of ways. Everything that is has its own life and fate, and that's why even these items have to be handled with care. An item surely does not breathe, or move, or reproduce, it has no metabolism - and yet it receives, stores, gives away and radiates information. Even an item has its personal tastes and some of its own will. It can like its owner, or not. If it doesn't, it keeps falling from their hands and breaking; a light flickers, a machine's function is disturbed.
What is organic and what is inorganic, I ask. The elements that compose living objects are the same that the so called inanimate object are built of, and matter and thought are not the opposites, for every item has first been a thought and a vision.
Whereas thought, indeed, it is by no means only a thought but an arrow, a weapon, a tool, the first and the foremost instrument.
I look at items and I see their loneliness and their connections. Items are not merely matter. Even the simplest, most insignificant object manufactured by humans is a story, as it speaks about the hopes, the needs, and the works of humanity. Every man-made product from shoes to rifles, from books to vehicles has the imprints of human spirit in it. In the same way as natural objects, the artifacts have something to say about the laws of the universe, its resources, and the history of this star.

Baabelin kirjasto
kirjasta Jorge Luis Borges: Ficciones (Grove Press Inc., 1962)
Universumi (jota toiset kutsuvat Kirjastoksi) koostuu määrittelemättömästä, kenties äärettömästä määrästä kuusikulmaisia huoneita. Huoneet kiertävät parvimaisesti kuilua, jossa kulkevat varsin matalin kaitein ympäröidyt valtavat ilmastointikanavat. Tähyääpä kuiluun ylös- tai alaspäin, loputtoman kauas näyttävät huoneiden tasaväliset kerrokset ulottuvan. Kaksikymmentä kirjahyllyä - viisi pitkää hyllyä seinustaa kohden - peittää neljä seinää kuudesta lattiasta kattoon. Korkeudeltaan ne eivät juuri ylitä keskimääräistä kirjastonhoitajaa. Avoimella seinällä on kapea oviaukko, josta käytävä johtaa toiseen, täysin vastaavanlaiseen tilaan. Molemmin puolin käytävää on sijoitettu kaksi pientä huonetta. Toisessa on seisomatilaa nukkumista varten, toinen tarjoaa helpotusta aineenvaihdunnallisiin tarpeisiin.
Kussakin kuusikulmiossa niitä on kaksi vastakkaisilla puolilla. Niiden säteilemä valo on riittämätöntä, lakkaamatonta.
Nuoruudessani olen matkustellut, kuten kaikki Kirjaston asukkaat. He väittävät kolmi- tai viisikulmaisen tilan olevan käsityskykymme ulottumattomissa. (Mystikot väittävät hurmoksessaan heille paljastuneen pyöreän kammion, jonka seinämä on yhden suuren kirjan selkämys, mutta heidän todistuksensa on epäiltävä ja sanansa hämärän peittämät. Tuo kehämäinen kirja on Jumala.) Minulle toistaiseksi riittäköön klassinen opinkappale: Kirjasto on pallomainen tila, jonka keskus on mikä tahansa kuusikulmio, ja jonka ulkokehä on saavuttamaton.

To do something different to pass the remaining ALMS hours, I decided to try translating some prose texts. I chose to translate passages from Leena Krohn's novel Kadotus and from Jorge Luis Borges' short story The Library of Babel from the book Ficciones to get a taste of translating both from Finnish to English and from English to Finnish. Translation is something I am interested in as a kind of a creative puzzle, and had I had more time, I would've liked to take part in the translation support group. I expected translating to Finnish to be easier, but after all both had their own kinds of knacks.
This of course has a lot to do with the texts in question as well. As I found out, it was not easy to picture the exact details of the architecture of the Library of Babel that Borges might have had in mind. In particular, the positioning of the mirror was quite a puzzle, as it was simply described to hang "in the entrance way". But as the mirror was described to create an illusion of extended space, I decided that it must be hung "in the way of the entrance", as it wouldn't make much sense for it to be hung on the wall of the corridor between rooms. I am not even sure whether there is a corridor, or only a doorway, but I couldn't imagine the two small rooms and the staircase positioned any other way. Also I couldn't for the life of me decipher what it meant for the lamps to be "running transversally", so I just settled for them to be located on the opposite sides of the room.
When translating to Finnish I of course have more control of the nuances, and I found it easier to take more freedoms in order to better convey the ideas behind the text. The first draft was pretty quick to write, but editing out the most flagrant anglicisms and suiting the sentence structures to Finnish took a lot of time. But I like that kind of fine-tuning.
The translation to English was in some ways more straightforward. For one thing the source text was simpler, and also my ability to adjust the result is more limited. I found that when translating from Finnish to English the problem is that the sentences tend to become long because of the compactness of Finnish with respect to English. For example, in Finnish it is possible to list things while adding quite expressive attributes to them, such as "jo kellastuvia nurmikoita ja katukiviä, joiden värit pöly on vaalentanut", in English having the exact same information content can easily make the sentence very bloated. The relative straightforwardness is likely for a great part due to my blissful ignorace about registers and nuances, and the nature of the source text, but I found the sentence structures to be easier to translate from Finnish to English. English is perhaps more liberal in that aspect.
