Faust being read Goethes Faust is such an interesting detail to me.

The story of a scholar who is dissatisfied with his vast knowledge because he can’t know more than he already does, being tempted by the devil / Mephistopheles and proceeding to destroy and, to some degree, bring death to an innocent woman and her family out of selfish desires but not regretting it whatsoever sounds an awful lot like the moral compass of the scientists behind c-con and other zone specific projects. They basically are characterised by the first part of Faust.

They don’t care how many casualties there are, how many lives are destroyed.

In the second part Dr.Faust goes past his personal desires and tries to create a utopia where everyone can be safe and happy, free from any of the struggles they might face, just to be overwhelmed by the consequences and die, full of regret, never experiencing the satisfaction and happiness Mephistopheles promised him, basically having thrown away his soul for nothing. The second part can be very easily applied to Faust, I mean; they share a name for a reason.

Faust is tragic because unlike Dr.Faust he didn’t get the happy ending and forgiveness from a god by being selfless and trying to do something good for the entirety of humanity. He was still a terrible person but at least he tried to redeem himself.

Faust didn’t get carried to heaven by angels, he didn’t get the chance to fully redeem himself through his ambition; he died with the same dissatisfaction and regret Dr.Faust did, who, in the end, was just used by Mephistopheles because he had a bet with God and was bored out of his mind.

He was just a toy, a lab rat, a life thrown away in the name of „science“
