i actually think i deserve bonus pay and like a fucking gift basket or something for showing up to work during These Challenging Times but i suspect what i’m probably going to get is an email
#i missed out on the joy of being an essential worker during covid so i guess i get a lil taste of that now#i’m gonna resist the urge to gripe about it anymore online#but i’m somewhat less than thrilled with the way the hospital has decided to handle the whole#‘we’re an essential service that needs to stay staffed and functional in the middle of a cyclone’ situation.#anyway. hope i don’t die in a flash flood on the way to work tomorrow or whatever.

I am so beyond ready to quit this job. Wednesday cannot come fast enough.
#to be fair it's bc school starts again in a few weeks#but idk. every day at this office feels like sandpaper on my skin. people always ask me shit i dont understand#and every case is so individual there's no set checklist to follow to troubleshoot#so most of the time I just grind my gears and get stuck#it'd busy more days than not.#and it was advertised to me as data entry only. client interactions was not what i signed up for.#it's all client interaction.#we're short staffed so nobody gets to take the back office and have a break.#when we weren't short staffed i was the new guy and only got 1 day in the back a week while everyone else got 2.#all my coworkers are conservative but talk like they're apolitical.#i thought it'd be fulfilling bc im helping people get benefits#but many are rude or impatient as any other service job. I'm constantly trying to direct people that don't want to listen#or explain the intricacies of something i barely understand.#and i don't want to lead people astray bc you have to start over if you blow a deadline.#but there's just nothing redeeming that i enjoy.#i hate customer service. i hate constantly asking questions. i like seldom few of my coworkers.#i can't be me at work.#and i don't care about the work itself anymore.#this job made me cry every day for weeks last month from sheer stress and overstimulation.#i almost cried myself sick several times.#the only reason I'm not there anymore is bc i dont fucking care anymore.#it took me 2 months to burn out. 2 months!#i was training for half of that!!#idk. everyone decided i was smart and could pick it up quickly so. even though everyone else got 4-6 weeks of shadowing#you can make do with 3 before you start doing stuff solo.#which feels unfair. i wasn't ready for it. and i resent the decision quite a bit.#plus it's been a nightmare for me in terms of external stressors and my generally deteriorating mental health. so.#all in all. i hate it here.#and i can't wait to turn in my notice so i can gtfo in 2 weeks#i am so tired. free me. let me go back to my music please

New Employee aquired today
My manager: Hey Grace maybe you can show NE some things, but don't overwhelm her
Me:
Me: so like. make sure it's not a repeat of my first day???
#like maam ive worked here for barely a month you know this#and my first ever shift was 8 hours and CLOSING#i did a lil bit of everything my first day why do you think im so adaptable to what you need now???#anyways i had NE help shred chicken cause we needed more and then i couldnt even use it bc we were out of the salad kit 🙃#today twas a long day#i was supposed to do subs but literally worked on salads all day cause we were so short staffed#a coworker who YESTERDAY asked for a shift today never showed up. our manager had to open and was barely through salads when i got there#(3 hours after open)#me and manager tackled customer service and did as many tasks as we could (specifically distress and make salads)#(i learned how to do temps)#morning cook stayed late WITHOUT TAKING A BREAK to bring back some stuff we needed#closing cook got sick and left when me and NE did leaving i assume 2 store managers (maybe just 1) and one coworker to close#we so short staffed they had a job fair JUST FOR OUR DEPARTMENT.#anywho#ive also been up technically since 1-2am. i got extra 1 hour between then and 5:30am before i had to get up. i went to bed at 9pm#so. ive been tired all day but since i dont have work tomorrow im gonna stay up late and chill#amber's shit you can ignore

District manager is coming in to the store today and I swear if she says anything bad about how I'm running my department I'm gonna blow a fuse

#LIKE. SERIOUSLY FUCK OFFFFFFF.#I've been short-staffed since I started and it has literally only been me since the new year#I'm supposed to have 3 part-timers to help me but the company refuses to pay a living wage so no one wants to work here#I'm literally doing the work of double my hours NO SHIT I'm not doing any of the manager stuff rn#god forbid I prioritize the customers over the company paperwork#only preempting criticism because she was really harsh on me when I first started#and I don't mind criticism but it has become increasingly clear that no one actually knows what happens in my department#they just know what paperwork I'm supposed to be filing they don't actually know what services we provide...#it's insane honestly. at least my store manager is trying to help out but idk if anyone over her head actually gives a fuck about it lol

Personal but: tomorrow I gotta call my neurologist's office and ask them to transfer my medical record to my doctor, so that he can sign off on my disability pension, and I can't wait to hear what excuse I'm going to get for why they cannot perform this basic fucking task. It's gonna be like "actually because we write our medical records on circle-shaped paper we're unable to scan it into normal square-shaped paper format, so that's why we can't transfer your medical record, guess you'll just have to choose between death by seizure or death by starvation uwu". And I know anyone reading this will be thinking I'm just being silly and dramatic and to that I say: tune in tomorrow and find out lmao
#then after that I gotta actually get this doctor to fill out the form correctly#which you would think would be easy for someone with a whole ass medical degree#but everyone always a dumbass around me so BET#and THEN once I've gotten two consecutive people to do their jobs I gotta face the final boss#which is the welfare office#which is notoriously staffed by devoutly malignant dumbasses#looking at the doctor's statement#deciding they don't know better than a doctor#which often they DO decide they know better than a doctor so that ain't a given#and then looking at that in conjunction with my homelessness#and coming to the conclusion that I might in fact struggle to work full-time#and if they still want to force me to do pointless activities to punish me for relying on welfare#that I should at least be referred to a disability employment service#who will be far better equipped to force me to do those things in a way that ain't gonna result in me in an emergency department#so all this gotta line up all these people gotta act right in a row#and I never get people acting right ever#so I have low expectations#but I have over the years grown some humour about this sort of thing so I genuinely can't wait to see how ridiculous this gets#lmao

the slow, creeping anticipatory joy of leaving your current job for a better one when no one even knows you're leaving
#we've been short-staffed for months now and they've been working us harder and harder#and seemingly refuse to hire more help so BYE#have fun finding someone else who knows how to do Literally Everything who also isn't a complete bitch about it#i bear these people no ill will but i can't stay here anymore#the job is perfectly fine but i'm not meant for customer service when i could be doing anything else that pays a higher federal salary#agent babbles

I genuinely need people to realize that Starbucks is not gourmet coffee. It is the McDonald’s of coffee but you’re paying gourmet prices.
#I’ve worked food service for a hot minute#and I’ve worked at chain cafes and small family owned ones#the family owned one I was in was so clean and put a ton of effort into their drinks#they had a similar price to starbucks but you actually felt like you got your moneys worth#I’ve never seen a fully staffed starbucks#and there are always dozens of fruit flies touching the drink stations#if you eat there for some reason still please go somewhere else#genuinely it’s a health concern at this point

holy shit I hate the rules and politics within the community services industry
#getting the third degree because I helped up a client#and they asked if I used strength and I was like... yeah I guess a bit? idk#tell me i should call an ambulance... ok#then you guys would be on my case for overblowing a situation and wasting resources or whatever#i also had to arrange a pickup yesterday because there was a staffing issue. trust me.#and i got shit for that too!! because they view it as me doing whatever i want#man i'm trying to make things easier for everyone#idk if previous makes entire sense. basically a last minute shift got assigned that clashed. that service leader was all Well that's#rostering's problem* when I said how it interferes with like three other clients#rostering is understandably panicking when i ca the.#them** so i'm like Look do you want me to call the wife of the client so we can arrange something etc etc#mind you this was all at the end of the day yesterday. i think around when the managers knock off and two hours before rostering#so i wanted to help with the scramble it caused. which technically meant i was overstepping my role... but who else is going to do it lol?#do you guys want someone less capable? are you intimidated by me or something?#then ofc i have a hard time explaining when work tries to do that thing they do where they catch you on technicals#therefore making it hard for you to explain or trust them. whatever man

ok tumblr really *has* broken my speaking mannerisms, at work I found two cup lids that had melted together inseparably and muttered "this, too, is yuri" as if that's a normal thing to say on a sunday morning
#life update i am tired and so is everyone else#my sister went to the ER last night for chest pain (she's ok it seems though still not great)#work's had the busiest week of sales ive seen thanks to march madness but we're short staffed#two of my coworkers were arrested this week and one went home after a mental breakdown#and tomorrow after the sun goes out for a bit we're gonna service everyone wanting food for the mm finale#might end up working overtime for a third day though i feel like it'll cancel out w the hours i missed this morning#when i was too nauseous to work due to all the painkillers i took last on an empty stomach last week#but honestly im doing ok i just want a fucking break and so does everyone else i know it seems#feels weird venting here but i guess it's better than silence#and at least i have weird events to explain my inactivity instead of 'idk brain bad :/' like before

I love calling off of work when I am physically incapable of completing my shift <- feeling immense guilt
#we’re so short staffed all the time because they hate to schedule people y’know. so at closing we literally only have exactly enough people#to function at bare minimum. and I always work closing so calling off means either someone has to come in or stay late or that they have to#shut down the service desk because there’s literally not enough people to keep everything running and close the store#zoracontent

I think one of the truly exhausting things about writing software is that you don't get to be done. Even if you finish a feature it can impact the next thing you build or the thing after that or leadership will want it different or a new goal is added. The only way to escape is to move to a different job, where you will never be done on something different.
#software engineering#software development#writing code#tech#I used to work at a consultancy and honestly even there there was a chance of being staffed on the managed services team#to be haunted by bad app decisions past#there is definitely value in constant releases and updates and all that#but it's exhausting knowing that nothing is ever complete#I wonder if this explains the inherent desire in software to start from scratch#it isn't that we want to start something new as much as we want to be done with something old
