Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. She established the first Catholic school in the nation, at Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she founded the first American congregation of Religious Sisters, the Sisters of Charity.

Santa Elizabeth Ann Seton 1774 - 1821 Festa: 04 de janeiro Padroeira: escolas católicas Origem: Nova Iorque, EUA . Elizabeth era filha de Catherine e Richard, membros da Igreja Episcopal Anglicana. Nessa igreja foi batizada e cresceu na fé, o que foi fundamental para a sua santidade. Com vinte anos, casou-se com William Seton, filho de uma rica família, e foram morar em Manhattan. Eles tiveram três filhas e dois filhos. Já no início do casamento, William contraiu tubercolose e para tentar recuperar a sua saúde, Elizabeth e a filha mais velha viajaram com ele para a Itália, porém William não resistiu. Elizabeth ficou hospedada na casa dos Filicchi, uma família devotamente católica. Vendo a fé daquela família, ela começou a questionar sobre o catolicismo. E um ano depois, Elizabeth se tornou Católica romana, o que lhe custou muito, pois família e amigos não aceitaram sua conversão. Em Emmitsburg, o Padre William Louise lhe prometeram criar uma escola para meninas e, com ajuda de um benfeitor, a viúva abriu a Academia e Escola gratuita São José. Outras mulheres se juntaram a ela e assim nascia uma comunidade religiosa, as Irmãs de Caridade São José, cujas regras se fundavam nas Filhas da Caridade de São Vicente de Paulo. Vendo Cristo no pobre, especialmente nas mulheres e crianças mais necessitadas, Elizabeth fez seu apostolado. Isso antes mesmo de ser Católica romana. Ela gostava de passar tempos com o Santíssimo e de rezar o Terço para cumprir melhor sua missão. E foi assim até o fim de sua vida, cujo exemplo foi o da busca de Deus e da obediência em tudo. .
