Out of the Belly of the Beast. 9/11 & NYC's evangelical churches
Yours Truly, One Love by Jennifer Contini Enderby, 2010. jennifercontini.com Forty-five years ago, just as the World Trade Center’s two towers were going up, nearby Primitive Christian Church went down in flames. The disaster symbolized the decline of religion in the city. In a series of articles in 1975, New York Times’ Kenneth Briggs wrote that there was a “decline in the major faiths’…

The Pursuit of Robert Emmet’s Grave
O! BREATHE not his name! let it sleep in the shade, Where cold and unhonoured his relics are laid; Sad, silent, and dark be the tears that we shed, As the night dew that falls on the grave o’er his head. But the night dew that falls, though in silence it weeps, Shall brighten with verdure the grave where he sleeps; And the tear that we shed, though in secret it rolls, Shall long keep his memory…

St Paul's Carnival, Bristol, 01.07.2023
This was my first visit to St Pauls Carnival since the COVID-19 epidemic. I got regularly to this Afro-Caribbean street festival, mainly for the authentic jerk chicken, but also it’s a great chance to hear some good music, some proper Bristol sounds and it’s also a cheap day out and lots and lots of fun. The whole carnival costs about a £100000 to put on each year and outside of Notting Hill…

ST PAUL'S CHURCH AS SEEN FROM THE SOUTH QUAYS
BETWEEN MELLOWS BRIDGE AND GRATTAN BRIDGE A Photographer’s Delight The South Quays’ relatively open space offers an unobstructed view of the North Quays, making it an ideal vantage point for a street photographer like myself. Armed with my Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max, I captured the contrasting architectural styles: the grandeur of the Four Courts and the old Church On Araan Quay which is discussed…

Catholic Churches Under Attack
Catholic Churches Under Attack
Eleven American Catholic Churches have been desecrated in the last few weeks, and one ancient Catholic Cathedral in Nantes, France was the victim of arson.
Nantes, France: Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul (Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul)
Begun in 1434, the Roman Catholic structure was built over hundreds of years – and finished in 1891. Fortunately, it wasn’t as badly damaged as Notre Dame. But its…

When a pope asks forgiveness for wrongs from the past
When a pope asks forgiveness for wrongs from the past
Representatives of Canada’s Indigenous communities were in Rome last week for a series of meetings with Pope Francis. The purpose of their visit was to urge Francis to publicly apologize for the abuse that their ancestors – and even some of them – suffered at residential schools run by the Catholic Church. But can a pope really ask for forgiveness when it’s been the Vatican’s practice to leave…

Invercargill
The largest town in Southland, Invercargill wouldn’t rate as one of New Zealand’s top travel destinations (unless you like cars and bikes) but it had enough to fill a day. Home to ~57,000 people it mainly exists to service one of the country’s most productive farming regions. It was established in the 1860s, and was once one of the richest parts of the country, with many wonderful heritage…

Local man’s random acts of kindness help dozens of people
Local man’s random acts of kindness help dozens of people
Good News Notes: “At a time when most of us are facing a lot of challenges, it’s nice to share the stories of random acts of kindness in this community. And we’re lucky to live in a place where that are plenty of examples of that right now. 85-year-old Father Tony Gallagher is a retired priest who served in Catholic parishes around Northwest Ohio for decades. After looking at all the food he had…
