Low-cost 3D method rapidly measures disease impacts on Florida’s coral reefs

Stony coral tissue loss disease manifests as lesions of necrotic tissue that spread across coral colonies, leaving behind dead coral skeletons. Since 2014, this highly virulent disease has contributed to substantial declines of reef-building coral in Florida, impacting more than 20 coral species. The need for widespread reef monitoring and novel surveys are imperative for disease mitigation strategies. However, the various techniques currently used all require individual evaluation and often rely on visual estimates by divers in the field.

A low-cost and rapid 3D technique is helping scientists to gain insight into the colony- and community-level dynamics of the poorly understood stony coral tissue loss disease. Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute adapted Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry to generate 3D models for tracking lesion progression and impacts on diseased coral colonies. By combining traditional diver surveys and with 3D colony fate-tracking, the team determined the impacts of disease on coral colonies at study sites throughout Southeast Florida in St. Lucie Reef, Jupiter, Palm Beach and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

Results of the study, published in PLOS One, demonstrated that the prevalence of stony coral tissue loss disease varied significantly across location, but not through time. St. Lucie Reef and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea sites were highly impacted by coral disease, while study sites in Jupiter and Palm Beach had lower disease prevalence. The highest disease values observed in this study were between 21 to 43 percent at St. Lucie Reef. However, no site reached the highest reported disease prevalence values of 60 percent observed near Miami in 2014.

“We observed an increase in disease prevalence during the spring of 2018, which was honestly unexpected. Prevalence values for other described coral diseases such as white syndrome, white band, black band, and white pox often increase during the summer months as water temperatures increase,” said Joshua D. Voss, Ph.D., senior author, an associate research professor at FAU Harbor Branch and executive director of the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Ocean Exploration, Research, and Technology. “Stony coral tissue loss disease prevalence does not appear to have a strong positive correlation with temperature as has been observed for other coral diseases, but potential environmental cofactors that may drive disease prevalence need to be examined further.”

Findings from the study also indicated that total colony area and healthy tissue area on fate-tracked colonies decreased significantly over time, capturing the amount of coral tissue lost to disease. However, disease lesions themselves did not change in size over time and were not correlated with total colony area. These results suggest that targeting intervention efforts on larger colonies may maximize preservation of coral cover.

“Since stony coral tissue loss disease is a progressive and necrotic infection, the area of tissue loss, or proportion of tissue loss, may represent more impactful metrics for quantifying the severity of infection as opposed to disease lesion area or percent affected tissue,” said Ian Combs, the study’s lead author and recent M.S. graduate from Voss’ lab at FAU Harbor Branch. “Traditional coral surveys combined with 3D photogrammetry can provide greater insights into the spatiotemporal dynamics and impacts of coral diseases on individual colonies and coral communities than surveys or visual estimates of disease progression alone.”

Since 2014, Florida’s Coral Reef has experienced an ongoing outbreak of the newly-described coral disease responsible for widespread coral death throughout the Tropical Western Atlantic. The disease first appeared in the summer of 2014 following the dredging of Government Cut in Miami-Dade County. In subsequent years, reports of stony coral tissue loss disease infections have increased and spread from Miami-Dade County along the Florida Reef Tract and into the wider Tropical Western Atlantic. To date, the disease has spread north to the northern terminus of the Florida’s Coral Reef in Martin County and south to the Dry Tortugas in Monroe County, with additional outbreaks observed in at least twelve territories throughout the Tropical Western Atlantic.

The ultimate goal of this work is to increase widespread application of this and similar techniques to improve the design, implementation, and success of coral disease intervention, mitigation, and management strategies.

“Quantitative 3D approaches such as the method we used can improve our understanding of the ecology and impacts of coral diseases on coral reef ecosystems, and may guide colony selection in future disease intervention strategies,” said Voss. “We’ll use this information to optimize our efforts to slow disease outbreaks in Southeast Florida and the Dry Tortugas.”

Combs is now a coral reef ecosystem biologist at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. Additional co-authors on the study include Michael Studivan, Ph.D., a graduate of FAU’s integrative biology doctoral program and an assistant scientist at the University of Miami CIMAS/NOAA AOML; and Ryan Eckert, an FAU integrative biology Ph.D. student in the Voss Lab.

This research was supported by awards to Voss from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (B430E1 and B55008), the Environmental Protection Agency (South Florida Geographic Initiative award X7 00D667-17), and the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (award NA16NOS4820052). Additional funding was awarded to Combs by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundation through the Indian River Lagoon Graduate Research Fellowship.

Indian River Lagoon boat tour was a blast! 1: yes I only own this one shirt lol 2: the boat itself! 3: hadn’t even left the dock and there was already wildlife to be spotted - a green heron! I saw one in St. Petersburg too but got a way better video this time. There were actually 2 hanging out here on the dock. 4: heading out 5: the blue green water is salt and the dark blue is fresh! 6: St. Lucie Artificial Reef Program - that boat will be sunk to create habitat! 7: a manatee! Falling Over: Part II

A week after my MINWR adventure, I once again headed out at the proverbial crack of dawn with Camille – this time for points south. Among the “rare but regular” visitors to central and south Florida are usually one or two Brants. These are nominally northern geese that, along with Snow and Ross’, manage to make their way “too far” south in winter. Having missed one of this year’s Snow Geese at MINWR a few weeks ago, I was keen on getting a look at this Brant.

The mapped location was in St. Lucie County, which is fairly close, but a county I had not previously birded [map]. It turns out that the bird was seen relatively close to the nuclear power plant! Camille and I made some jokes about coming upon a 100 meter tall goose in the lagoon. The role of nuclear power as part of future energy concerns is a serious topic, both state and nation-wide, but I have no specific  reason to worry about this power plant.

Technically, this part of the Indian River Lagoon is known as Herman Bay. You can see one of the nuclear reactor structures in the background.

Just south of the bay the lagoon opens up quite close to the roadway, and it was here that we came upon our first target bird of the day, loosely hanging out with some Red-breasted Mergansers. I hadn’t seen a Brant since living in Massachusetts, and it was Camille’s first ever!

The relative lack of white around the throat could indicate this is the pale-bellied, or Atlantic sub-species, but young birds can sometimes be confusing.

This goose made a couple of close passes to us, obviously curious about us.

Red-breasted Mergansers are regular winter residents in Florida, but I alway enjoy seeing them, with their punk rock head feathers and bright orange bills.

After looking around a bit for sparrows and winter warblers, it was time to move along to our next destination and target.

Neotropic Cormorants are a regular visitor to south Florida, but at least one bird has been calling Wakodahatchee Wetlands Park [map] home for the past several years. I looked for this bird in June, to no avail, so I was keen to get a look at it.

As far as urban parks go, Wakodahatchee is a real gem, and despite the huge number of visitors, the park is an important rookery for Double-crested Cormorants, Wood Storks, and several heron and egret species. Most of the nests were empty at this point in the Fall, though some noisy cormorant fledglings were testing out their flying abilities.

The cormorants were fluttering their throats with bills agape, trying to stay cool in the unseasonable heat (it was in the upper 80s). It’s amazing to me how different cormorants can look depending on their bill position.

Streamlined look.

Black-bellied Whistling Ducks (another neotropic bird species that is found more and more regularly in Florida) also live around the park year-round. We saw several groups of them, including one mother duck with a retinue of “teenage” ducklings, resting in some shade.

We did finally manage to see the Neotropic Cormorant! Where are the photos, you ask? I have none. For the most part my balky camera had behaved enough for some reasonable photos (as I hope you can see, above). But the distant shots of the Neotropic Cormorant seemed too much for it. Camille and I took some long long binocular looks and compared the bird’s bill, tail, gular pouch, and relative proportions to the many Double-crested Cormorants to nail down a positive identification. This marked my first ever look at this species, so I was excited!

Another newcomer to the Florida bird scene is the Gray-headed (or Purple-headed) Swamphen. These robust and aggressive relatives of the gallinules have been rapidly expanding northward from south Florida in recent years. It’s unclear exactly how the species began its infiltration, but it is a common resident in an ever increasing number of areas.

Gray-headed Swamphens have larger, heavier bills than gallinules.

Long toes help swamphens walk on floating vegetation and with grasping submerged roots to feed on. They are omnivores, eating insects and crustaceans, as well as lizards and even small birds.

Wakodahatchee is also well known for its large and photogenic population of feral iguanas. Some large (over 1.5 meters long) specimens were in evidence that day. If you have ever considered having an iguana as a pet, please bear in mind at how large and long-lived these animals are, and don’t commit to caring for one without all the facts. If you do have one and can no longer care for it, please PLEASE, do NOT release them into the wild. Please contact an iguana/reptile rescue organization. Feral animals cause major disruptions to native ecosystems by using up resources (food, habitat, shelter) that many of our local animal friends depend on, often out-competing them. This isn’t the feral animals’ fault, and a solution to the problem is complex and will take some time.

Toward the end of our walk, we managed to come upon a few loose flocks of warblers and gnatcatchers, but the best was flushing out an Orange-crowned Warbler for Camille’s second lifer of the day!

We made a couple of additional stops on our way back north, including Ocean Ridge and John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, both in Palm Beach County, where we had some usual fall birds, including some Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

But if you want to live that salt life all year round, moving to a beach town isn’t an unattainable dream. There are many inexpensive coastal cities around the country. Here are 15 affordable beach towns, based on median home values under $250,000, and ordered from most to least populous.

Situated on the Treasure Coast of the Sunshine State, Port St. Lucie—full of quiet neighborhoods, golf courses, and waterways—has a laid-back vibe. Sporty types will love all the activities, from boating and fishing on the St. Lucie River; to watching the New York Mets play at Tradition Field during spring training; to attending the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance.

There’s never a dull moment in this Space Coast city, where visitors and residents find endless things to do. Known for its many parks, ranging from natural preserves to cyclocross (bicycle racing) tracks and paintball fields, Palm Bay also offers golf courses, as well as many trails for running, cycling, and more. Waterfront dining and ample shopping opportunities round out the experience.

A well-rounded beach town located on the Space Coast, Melbourne has a bit of everything. Nope, not that St. Louis. This is Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, a quaint seaside town with nautical character to spare. In addition to its alluring beaches, warm waters, and first-rate fishing, the town offers land-bound pleasures like exploring its many art galleries, Creole cottages, and 19th-century abodes.

Outdoorsy types will love the simple life in Freeport, Texas, about 50 miles south of Houston. The town offers ample fishing opportunities, including charters and tours, and the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, comprising 40,000 acres of wetlands and a huge variety of flora and fauna. A golf course near Hobe Sound partially owned by basketball legend Michael Jordan is dirtying the South Fork of the St. Lucie River, a state official said Friday.

Construction at the golf course being built on 226 acres east of Interstate 95 and north of Bridge Road is putting unacceptable levels of sediment in the upper reaches of the river, an aerial survey of the site revealed Friday afternoon, said Randy Smith, a spokesman for the South Florida Water Management District.

“They’re doing work in a canal on the property and it’s getting the water stirred up,” Smith said. “That water has made its way through a series of canals and into the South Fork.”

A district crew was on the site Friday afternoon to determine the extent of the damage.

��If warranted, we could issue some kind of enforcement against the contractor,” Smith said. “It could be anything from a notice of non-compliance saying to fix the problem immediately all the way to a notice of violation, which could include penalties and fines.”

Breaking state rules

Guettler Bros. Construction in Fort Pierce is the contractor on the project, said Nicki van Vonno, Martin County Growth Management Department director. Company officials did not return a phone call Friday afternoon.

District staffers first visited the site Jan. 25 and “did observe turbidity in the water,” Smith said, but not enough to find the construction in violation of pollution laws.

“Our people met with the contractor and made some suggestions about how to better control runoff from the site into the river,” Smith said.

The suggestions included sodding canal banks, plugging some canals and moving barriers designed to hold back dirty water. During a second, midweek visit, staffers saw some barriers had been moved.

However, an aerial survey Friday morning “confirmed” sediment from the construction site was getting into the river at levels that weren’t in compliance with regulations.

“It’s not a Level 1 catastrophe,” Smith said.

Not Lake O discharges

Muddy water from the construction site was first noticed by kayakers in the upper South Fork in late November, said Ed Stout, owner of South River Outfitters, a kayak shop adjacent to Halpatiokee Regional Park.

It wasn’t dirty water from the Lake Okeechobee discharges, Stout said, because it was coming from upstream. Lake water enters the South Fork downstream of Stout’s shop.

“Besides, it kept coming after the discharges stopped,” he said.

The water is “chocolate-milk brown,” Stout said. “You can’t see the bottom. The fish moved away, and then the birds moved away.”

The dirty water extends “at least three or four miles,” Stout said. “It’s a lot more opaque the farther upstream you go.”

Principal owner

TCPalm in October 2016 reported Jordan would be principal owner of the 18-hole golf course to be developed by The Grove Golf Club, a West Palm Beach company.

The private club will include a driving range, 9,800-square foot clubhouse and maintenance facilities, according to the developer’s application filed with Martin County.

The property is bordered by agricultural land to the east, south and west and by Atlantic Ridge State Park to the north, according to the application. The property also is bordered by multiple wetlands, according to the developer.

The Martin County Commission approved a major final site plan for the project in November and the contractor held a pre-construction meeting with the county Dec. 20.
