Saint Longinus the Centurion Died: 1st century Feast Day: October 16 (new) March 15 (trad.) Patronage: the blind and those with poor eyesight, for discernment, Mantua

Saint Longinus was the centurion that pierced the side of Jesus at the Crucifixion. He was losing his eyesight at the time and when Christ’s blood fell into his eyes his sight was restored. He then said, “Indeed, this man was the Son of God.” (Mark 15:39) Subsequently, he received instructions from the apostles, converted, left the army, and became a monk. He was arrested, tortured (teeth pulled out and tongue cut out yet could still speak clearly), and martyred. His relics are in Rome and his lance is contained in one of the four pillars over the altar in the Basilica of St. Peter’s.

I nominate Saint Longinus (São Longuinho) as a brazilian who's always losing stuff

I had to look up who St Longinus was! I had no idea he was the Roman soldier who pierced Jesus's side. I also had no idea he had that much folklore in Brazil. The more you know!

Well, this is St. Longinus's first nomination, so he's going to have to go a long way to get more votes to make it to the bracket!

I’m really sorry this stuff is happening to you. If I may offer something to chew on: may I ask what the inspiration or thought process was behind that comic of the catboy who impaled himself upon the spear? I’m not catholic and I am entranced by that comic. I really love it. It feels like a theology for some other existence.

the catboy longinus comic is still kinda one of my favorite things ive ever made. i think the context it was written under explains a lot about my thoughts on it and its meaning tbh (the context being i had kidney stones from stress about failing though college and dropping out and having to move back home). the saint, saint longinus also holds a lot of meaning to me, being the patron saint of the blind and the legionary that stabbed jesus while he was on the cross to see if he was dead.

beyond that i dont know how much i can really explain about that in words. it came from a very strange place in myself and i kinda scribbled it out in one night and posted it before being driven to the hospital LOL.if the question is why tehyre catboys fuck if i know. i genuinely can not explain that one.

there is this popular belief in brazil that if u lose something u should ask for st longinus (affectionately called st little longinus) and if he finds what u lost u should give him three jumps. i lose my baptism earring, can’t find it anywhere, ask help 4 the saint and weeks later my godmother finds it in the church’s seat 🫢🫢🫢

you guys don’t understand how much i wish i could be a homosexual monk getting up early every day for prime hoping that they assign me to work on the parchment today but the skins are still soaking and aren’t ready to be stretched so instead i’m assigned to the scriptorium even though my minuscules are misaligned every time but today the prior says i can work on the illuminations on brother anselm’s legenda aurea since his horae made for the clothier last year was terrible so all through terce i’m thinking about how to properly position st. agatha so as not to be disrespectful or base but by the time sext rolls around i’ve only had time to clean up anselms illuminations up to the beheading of st. paul and after none it’s back to the scriptorium and this time the roundsman brother bernard sticks his head in partway through since brother peter will slack off nearing vespers if no one’s checking on him and brother bernard makes a show of looking at everyone’s work so it doesn’t seem like he’s singling out peter and at this point i would be working on fixing anselm’s shaky line work on the spear piercing st. matthew and as bernard leans over my desk the knots of his cincture nearly knock over my ink but either way he looks approvingly (as if he has any say, since even if he’s the roundsman i have seniority and know the abbot much better) and after compline when we’re all settling in for sleep before matins & lauds i wonder if he’ll be a stickler on chapter 55 of our dear st. benedict’s rule before looking to see if the chamberlain was going to shave us today since poor old brother albrecht was looking a little ragged but he’s not here so i tuck in to sleep… and in a few days when it’s time to stretch the skins brother bernard comes out to the yard where i’m setting up the frames and he tries to help me but makes a fool of himself in front of me and the cantor but asks me to meet him in the misericord after vespers anyways and of course i think i’m in trouble because the roundsman is asking me to the misericord but when the time comes he just wants help with his letters before lent and this time it’s my cincture brushing against his almost black linens and my hand under his hood on his back as i have him read aloud to me from the vulgata christs prayer to his father in gethsemane while his men slept soundly even as judas was woken by the centurions and longinus readied his spear… i need that life so bad

Whoever chose Mizrak's name did a good job.

I love the fact that Olrox is a dragon and Mizrak's name means spear/lance, the lance is a meaningful object in Christianity, be it the Longinus lance or the famous image of St. George impaling the dragon. Especially St. George and the dragon. That gives the whole thing a certain symbolism.

The thought occurred to me when I remembered that Jesus was st*bbed when he was crucified and knowing how Warrior Nun treated the crown of thorns as an item that incapacitates divine beings, then that makes the lance that st*bbed Jesus, the Lance of Longinus, the Holy Spear which currently resides in the Vatican, a weapon that can defeat Dark!Ava

Andrea Saltini "INRI" (2024) / knife, spray paint

In March 2024, this work - and the artist who produced it - were attacked at the Museo Diocesano in Carpi, Italy. Saltini's exhibition "Gratia Plena" had been the subject of widespread controversy for its "blasphemous" reimaginings of religious themes, including a painted pieta in which the Virgin Mary was replaced by an astronaut. (The Museo Diocesano, it should be noted, is actually a deconsecrated church, formerly known as Sant'Ignazio.) The show's most contentious work had been INRI (2024), which depicted Jesus’s nude body splayed on the floor while the head of St Longinus, the Roman soldier who pierced his side with a lance during the crucifixion, is seen from behind to hover above Jesus's crotch, suggesting an act of oral sex being performed on the lifeless figure of Christ. The work had drawn an immediate public outcry, with a petition calling for the painting's removal garnering over 30,000 signatures in the weeks following its unveiling.

About three weeks after the show's opening, a masked individual entered the exhibition and began slashing at various paintings, including INRI, with a knife and spraying them with black paint. Saltini, who was in the room at the time, tried to stop him, at which point the assailant cut the artist's neck and fled. (As of this writing, no suspects have been arrested.)

For what it's worth, Saltini told reporters prior to the attack that he hadn't meant for the work to provoke worshippers: “I simply wanted to ’cover’ the nudity of a man, as had been done in the past with the bodies in the Sistine Chapel," he said. "There is no malicious intent: the artistic concept would like the canvas placed vertically, and in fact in the catalog I had it photographed as lying on the ground. There is nothing scabrous about St. Longinus touching the side of Christ coming down from the Cross, probably helping him.���

While Saltini was rushed to the hospital, his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening. As for the damaged artworks, it's still unclear whether restoration will be an option.
