Disclaimer: strong language, some angst and reference to cheating
Author’s note: Do you like horror movies, darling fic-readers? I must admit I don’t, most specifically because I just have to vivid an imagination. Jaws? I didn’t dare to swim in a pool for 3 months straight..and it was the middle of summer. Yep, I know it’s silly. Are there any movies you definitely wouldn’t watch again?
Word count: 1.509
(Link to my Masterlist)
--
Dear readers,
Other then enjoying my chocolate cake, I was just cleaning up my DVD collection and what a wonderful collection of totally bloody horror movies I have apparently collected over the years. It is really, truly, quite horrible actually. Why would a sweet, innocent person like myself have such a twisted desire for watching the dark and obscure? Why did I watch IT more times than Pride & Prejudice?
It’s quite fascinating really, and most likely this horror fascination of mine has something to do with emotional control; we can experience certain feelings like anxiousness whilst still being in a safe environment. And you know me by now..I like being in control.
So what kind of movies do you like, dear readers? And what do you think that says about you? I’d love to hear from you.
Cleaning up her room and her thoughts,
Ali
‘So, thank you so much for coming Miss Taylor. Please take your time to work through the information I shared with you and we are looking forward to hearing from you again. You can contact me on the mail address on my card, or call me, and please..do not fret to ask me anything.’
‘Thank you doctor.’ I nodded, quite overcome with the overload of information and questions that had circulated through this small doctor’s office in St Helier’s Jersey General Hospital. I had simply requested an in-take, but hadn’t been quite ready for how deep and personal all this had been.
More than a few times throughout the intake had I felt tears well up in my stubborn eyes, the simple thought of how difficult this might be becoming, nearly too much to handle. The doctor had been most kind and informative; they could not do most of the procedures here, so I’d have to fly up and down to London every month. And there was this physical exam they had to do..and I had to start tracking my ovulation cycle, take specific medicine and vitamins. And..most importantly..I had to figure out what I wanted to do with this “fresh new relationship” of mine - which I had mentioned only very briefly.
I had waved it off, signalling I had little hope that it would work anyways, to which the doctor had given me an inquisitive eyebrow raise, but thankfully she hadn’t pried any further.
With slightly wobbly legs I stepped out of her office and thanked her again, my feet quite automatically walking back the path they had came; through the long hallway, past the waiting room and then to the elevator. But..I never quite made it to the elevator in one line, my eyes catching something quite unexpected in the waiting room.
‘Chris?’ I gasped quietly, seeing a familiar face amongst the waiting patients, a very young blonde woman right beside him, their hands entangled. I felt my heart, my soul, my everything, sink like a block of concrete to the bottom of the ocean.
She was expecting.
His large hazelnut eyes stared at me in slight shock, hands quickly disentangling from his new..lover. Lover. He had a pregnant lover. Was it his? OH FUCKING HELL. ‘Ali..hey..what a..surprise.’ He scrambled up to his feet and pulled a warm smile to his hesitant face. He felt most obviously very caught in the act.
How many months would she be? Obviously more than three or four months. Had he..had he been..cheating on me? I stared blankly at him, not quite sure of what to say.
‘Quite a surprise.’ I muttered, nodding while looking over his shoulder at the surprised looking woman. ‘It’s always good to see a friend.’ Chris smiled, pressing a large hand on my shoulder to steer me to a corner of the waiting room. ‘..Look..please don’t make a scene. Please.’ He whispered, his mouth remaining curled in a wide, friendly smile, acting as if nothing was amiss.
I couldn’t breathe. I just..couldn’t breathe, my eyes staring at him with disbelief.
HOW COULD HE?!
Wishing to not show him my tears - tears that long dared to spill during the doctor’s visit - I quickly shook my head and wished him a good day, my feet hasting off towards the elevator.
HOW COULD HE, HOW COULD HE?!
It seemed to take ages before the metal doors of the elevator finally slid closed, my eyes pricking with angry tears. And as the elevator started to descend, my organs feeling the mild drop of the cabin, my tears started to descend too. Heavy, wet and desperate. How could he..how could he…ARGHHH!!!
‘Hen.’ I muttered through the phone, my voice still weak and cracking.
‘Hey you.’ He said gently, easily picking up on my distress, his voice even lower and more soothing than usual.
‘Can I come over for a hug?’ My voice was but a mere whisper, but he heard it all the same. ‘Of course sweetie.’
Oh Henry, if only all things in life were this easy.
‘Hey.’ I stalled at the doorway of his parents’ study, the desk Henry was sitting at completely filled with large piles of what appeared to be scripts and administrational work. He looked up, his face immediately relaxing into one of tenderness. He sighed and turned in his chair, tapping both hands on his thick thighs, gesturing me to come sit on his lap.
No words were needed as I gladly crawled into the warmth of his embrace, my nose still sniffling after a near hour of non-stop crying in my bedroom. I needed him and I was glad he was here.
I could feel his hand just gently running through my hair, all the way back down to my lower back, his face studying mine. We just sat there for a few long minutes, quietly, some lone tears drifting down from my red eyes.
‘I’m just so sad.’ I muttered, another spill of tears bursting out, flooding my reddened cheeks. I gulped and heaved, not being able to stop myself from releasing all the sorrow and pain.
It was just something about Henry that made me lower my guards. A little more each time we were together.
‘It’s okay, Ali. Sshh..’ Henry’s voice swam warm and soothing through the shell of my ear, his breath brushing through my messy hair. Oh how I wished I could just disappear right here in his lap. How good and fitting an end it would be for me.
Alice, the girl who fell down the deep black hole of adulthood until she was no more.
And how awful I was for not telling him why I was crying so. I had to make sure I’d tell him, or it would simply become too difficult. But not now. First..tears.
More long minutes crawled by as the new onslaught of tears finally subsided, Henry still not saying a word, his large arms just keeping me close and safe, hands running deliberate circles over my back.
I sniffled one more time, wiping the tears on the sleeve of my shirt before finally sitting up a bit and looking Henry in the eye. Those big, blue oceans of care and comfort looking back at me with…love. Or something like that.
‘Thanks for that.’ I breathed, inhaling deep and sharp. Henry smiled and shrugged simply. ‘I’m glad to be of service milady.’
I sighed, looking over his desk, an iPad laying forlorn in the corner. ‘Yep, read your blog.’ He hummed, smiling into my ear. I raised an eyebrow at him, my eyes red and agitated from all the tears. ‘You don’t have to, you know.’ I whispered. He chuckled, shaking his head. ‘I wouldn’t miss them for the world. I love knowing what is going on with you.’
‘And horror movies..?’
‘Mm..you know me..can’t stand females screaming.’
‘Oh papa bear gets protective then, hmm?’ I teased, the first glimmer of a smile appearing back on my lips. Henry laughed. ‘Maybe a little.’
‘Oh…Henry…come save me!’ I swooned with a bit of theatricality, my hand moving to rest on my forehead, eyes gazing desperately into the distance. When he didn’t immediately respond, his eyebrows just rising in amusement, I further exaggerated my flailing body, letting myself near drop off his lap.
‘Wow..’ Henry quickly grabbed onto me, pulling me more firmly into his chest, ‘..okay..I’ve got you.’ He sniffled. We looked at each other for an amused second before we both burst out laughing, my face now happily snuggling into his neck and my nose sniffing up that undefinable smell that was Henry’s musk. I was the fair maiden in the prince’s arms, ready to take on any horror that was to be survived.
And darn..How I loved his smell.
‘Hmm…thanks for allowing me to be here Hen.’ I hummed, making him lean back a little his large thumb moving to stroke over my heated cheeks, removing the last of the remains of salty tears from my skin. Without words required he leaned into me, offering me a much more practised kiss then that very awkward..first..puppy..
‘Ooh..hair..’ He muttered, hovering back a little and reaching for his mouth to pull out a hair.
OH GODS…we both laughed aloud.
‘This is terrible.’ I blushed through our laughter. ‘No it’s not.’ Henry smiled, brushing all hair out of my face before pulling me back to his lips. ‘It’s perfect.’ He whispered onto my lips, trying again.
And yes, we watched a horror movie that night from my vast collection of classics, Henry’s arm near choking me whenever a woman screamed, his muscles tightening around my rib cage until I was sure there would be bruises. But ..I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
My heart and soul fluttered, and that is all I really wanted and needed, my reservations for a possible relationship with Henry slowly fading into the background.

60 years since 1st American in space: Tourists lining up (AP) Sixty years after Alan Shepard became the first American in space, everyday people are on the verge of following in his cosmic footsteps. Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin used Wednesday’s anniversary to kick off an auction for a seat on the company’s first crew spaceflight—a short Shepard-like hop launched by a rocket named New Shepard. The Texas liftoff is targeted for July 20, the date of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic aims to kick off tourist flights next year. And Elon Musk’s SpaceX will launch a billionaire and his sweepstakes winners in September. That will be followed by a flight by three businessmen to the International Space Station in January.
The U.S. birthrate is falling; other countries have faced the same problem (Washington Post) With the U.S. birthrate declining for the sixth year in a row and undergoing its largest drop in nearly 50 years, according to provisional data released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States is facing a dilemma with which many wealthy nations in Europe and Asia have long grappled. Instead of trying to ramp up immigration, some governments have tried subsidizing fertility treatments, offering free day care and generous parental leave, and paying thousands of dollars in cash grants to parents. But there’s little evidence that these policies have been effective on a large scale. South Korea, for instance, spent roughly $120 billion between 2005 and 2018 to incentivize having children, but its birthrate continued to fall. Singapore began offering new child-care subsidies, more-generous maternity leave policies and grants for new parents that today amount to $7,330 per baby. But those interventions didn’t reverse the trend: Singapore currently has the world’s third-lowest fertility rate. And Japan, Russia, Estonia and other nations have similar problems.
Protest road blockades halt Colombian coffee exports, federation says (Reuters) Road blockades connected to anti-government protests in Colombia, which marked their eighth day on Wednesday, have halted shipments of top agricultural export coffee, the head of the grower’s federation said. The protests, originally called in opposition to a now-canceled tax reform plan, are now demanding the government take action to tackle poverty, police violence and inequalities in the health and education systems. Twenty-four people, mostly demonstrators, have died. “We are stopped completely, exports are stopped, there is no movement of coffee to ports nor internally,” federation head Roberto Velez said in a phone interview.
20 dead in Rio de Janeiro shootout (Reuters) At least 20 people, including a police officer, died on Thursday in a shootout during a police operation against drug traffickers in Rio de Janeiro’s Jacarezinho shanty town, O Globo newspaper reported on its website. Two passengers on a metro train were also wounded in the shooting in the northern Rio neighborhood, the newspaper said.
Gunboats and blockade threats as U.K., France clash over fishing (NBC News) The U.K. and France were engaged in a naval standoff on Thursday as a long-simmering dispute over post-Brexit fishing rights escalated in the English Channel. France deployed two maritime patrol boats to the waters off the British Channel island of Jersey, its navy said, after the British Navy dispatched two of its own vessels to the area late Wednesday. The dueling moves came as a flotilla of French fishing trawlers sailed to the Jersey port of St. Helier to protest over fishing rights. The French government has suggested it could cut power supplies to the island if its fishermen are not granted full access to U.K. fishing waters under post-Brexit trading terms. Clément Beaune, the French secretary of state for European affairs, told AFP on Thursday that Paris will “not be intimidated” by the British. On the other side of the Channel, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged his "unwavering support" for the island after he spoke with Jersey officials about the prospect of a French blockade. Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands with a population of 108,000, is geographically closer to France than Britain. It sits just 14 miles off the French coast and receives most of its electricity from France via undersea cables.
Ukraine wants aid, NATO support from Blinken’s visit (AP) U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with his Ukrainian counterpart in Kyiv Thursday, telling him that he was there to “reaffirm strongly” Washington’s commitment to Ukraine’s “sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.” Blinken also assured Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that the U.S. was committed “to work with you and continue to strengthen your own democracy, building institutions, advancing your reforms against corruption.” By visiting so early in his tenure, before any trip to Russia, Blinken is signaling that Ukraine is a high foreign-policy priority for President Joe Biden’s administration. But what he can, or will, deliver in the meeting later with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is unclear.
India hits another grim record as it scrambles for oxygen supply (AP) Infections in India hit another grim daily record on Thursday as demand for medical oxygen jumped seven-fold and the government denied reports that it was slow in distributing life-saving supplies from abroad. The number of new confirmed cases breached 400,000 for the second time since the devastating surge began last month. The 412,262 cases pushed India’s tally to more than 21 million. The Health Ministry also reported 3,980 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 230,168. Experts believe both figures are an undercount. Eleven COVID-19 patients died as the pressure in the oxygen line dropped suddenly in a government medical college hospital in Chengalpet town in southern India on Wednesday night, possibly because of a faulty valve, The Times of India newspaper reported. Hospital authorities said they had repaired the pipeline last week, but the consumption of oxygen doubled since then, the daily said.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid gains chance to form government, oust Netanyahu (Washington Post) Yair Lapid, a former news anchor and leader of Israel’s centrist opposition, was picked to negotiate a new governing coalition Wednesday, opening the possibility of Israel getting its first government not led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in more than a decade. President Reuven Rivlin tapped Lapid to make the next attempt to form a government one day after Netanyahu failed to assemble a parliamentary majority after 28 days of effort. Under Israel’s system, Lapid also has four weeks to craft a power-sharing plan. If he falls short, the president could open to the process to any member of the Knesset or call for Israel’s fifth election since the spring of 2019. Lapid will face a stiff challenge in trying to find common ground among the range of anti-Netanyahu parties elected in March. As a bloc, they would control enough seats to secure a majority. But ideologically, they range from the far right to the far left of Israel’s political spectrum. They also include Israeli Arab parties that traditionally play no part in supporting governing coalitions but that may be needed this time.
Instagram fuels rise in black-market sales of maids into Persian Gulf servitude (Washington Post) The advent of Instagram in recent years has helped create an international black market for migrant workers, in particular women recruited in Africa and Asia who are sold into servitude as maids in Persian Gulf countries. Unlicensed agents have exploited the social media platform to place these women into jobs that often lack documentation or assurances of proper pay and working conditions. Several women who were marketed via Instagram described being treated essentially as captives and forced to work grueling hours for far less money than they had been promised. “They advertise us on social media, then the employer picks. Then we are delivered to their house. We are not told anything about the employers. You’re just told to take your stuff, and a driver takes you there,” said Vivian, 24, from Kenya. Domestic servants sold on the platform described encountering threats, exploitation and abuse. The agencies which marketed them, meanwhile, made thousands of dollars. In response to a request for comment last month, an Instagram spokesperson asked for the list of accounts identified by The Post so company officials could investigate. Instagram has since deleted these accounts.
Nonuplets: Woman From Mali Gives Birth To 9 Babies (NPR) A Malian woman has given birth to nine babies, in what could become a world record. Halima Cissé had been expecting to have seven newborns: ultrasound sessions had failed to spot two of her babies. "The newborns (five girls and four boys) and the mother are all doing well," Mali's health minister, Dr. Fanta Siby, said in an announcement about the births. Professor Youssef Alaoui, medical director of the private Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca where Cissé gave birth, said the babies were born at 30 weeks. The newborns weighed between 500 grams and 1 kilogram (about 1.1 to 2.2 pounds), he told journalists. The clinic has deployed a team of around 30 staff members to aid the mother's delivery and care for her nine children.
Nigeria reels from nationwide wave of deadly violence (The Guardian) Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari has come under mounting pressure from critics and allies alike as the country reels from multiple security crises that have claimed hundreds of lives in recent weeks. An alarming wave of violence has left millions in Africa’s most populous country in uproar at the collapse in security. Attacks by jihadist groups in the north-east have been compounded by a sharp rise in abductions targeting civilians in schools and at interstate links across Nigeria. Mass killings by bandit groups in rural towns, a reported rise in armed robberies in urban areas and increasingly daring attacks on security forces by pro-Biafran militants in the south-east have also all risen. In April alone, almost 600 civilians were killed across the country and at least 406 abducted by armed groups, according to analysis by the Council on Foreign Relations. The violence has left much of the country on edge and Buhari facing the fiercest criticism since he took office.

AUTHORS NOTES:  Feedback is always appreciated. Especially since it’s been a hot minute since I’ve really written anything!
Juniper was sitting cross legged on the couch, the end of the movie fading into the credits. She sighed.  “I could watch that movie over and over.” She reached over and put her cup down. She stood, stretching.  “Do we want to watch another, or head to bed?”
Madeleine looked at her and shrugged.  “I’m not very tired. We could get some more snacks and then watch another movie.” She stood. “I can’t imagine we have many left, though. we have done a fine job.”
“Madeleine!!!” A voice called from outside.  “MY LOVE!!! OPEN YON WINDOW!!”
Madeleine looked at her.  “Oh no, what did…” She went over to the window and threw it open. “Joey, what are you doing?”
“I’ve come to profess my love for you!!” he screamed out, supported by Henry. “Let me go! I can do this!”
Henry looked up at her.  “I’m sorry... He had a little too much mead.”
“I did not! I had just enough to come home and tell her…” He stopped and turned to Henry. “What's I going to say?”
He shook his head. “You loved her.”
“Yup! Madeleine, I love you. You make my heart soar!” he called.
She laughed.  “Joey, I love you, too. Go back to Hen’s, and I will see you in the morning, you romantic git.”
“No! I need a kiss first,” Joey said, and before anyone could stop him, he started climbing up the trellis. “I’m coming, my fair maiden.”
Juniper appeared next to her, and Joey continued blathering, “Oh, good! Juni, this is Hen, you should use him to get over… My dear, what was the wanker she was dating, Lakes, Streams, Rivers? Fuck, I don’t know! There was water involved,” Joey called.  “Hen, this is Juniper…” He swung one arm off the trellis, and as he did, the movement took him further back and Joey quickly lost his footing.
The three less inebriated people watched in horror as Joey fell, landing loudly in the bins.  “Joey!!” Madeleine called out.
Joey didn’t move and let out a moan.
“Hen! Don’t move him! Call 999!” Madeleine called out and came back in the window.
Juniper grabbed her sweatshirt and threw it on, following Madeleine out the door and down to the ground level. Joey was sitting up.  “I’m fine, Hen! I am fine.”
Henry looked at Madeleine.  “He won’t let me call.”
“He’s going to call, you daft git!” she said. “I swear!”
“I am fine, my love.” Joey said. He tried to stand up. “Oh, I think I will just sit here for a few moments. I feel a little woozy.”
“We can just take him to the A&E, “ Juniper said. “I can drive us.”
Joey pointed at her. “Yes! That is a grand idea!”
Madeleine shook her head.  “Fine.” She looked at Henry.  “Can you help get him up? I’ll grab your keys and lock up.” She disappeared.
Juniper went over to her car. “Bring him over here.”
Henry looked at her, one of his eyebrows up.  “Um, are we all going to fit into that...what’s the word I'm looking for, Hot Wheel?”
She looked at him, frowning.  “It’s got plenty of room, and I’ll have you know it’s very efficient in London.” She ran her hand over the top of the car.  “Don’t listen to him, Petunia.”
“You named your car Petunia?” Henry asked.  “Seriously?”
Juniper rolled her eyes at him. “What do you call your car. Car?”
“I don’t call it anything. I get in it and I drive.” He maneuvered Joey so he was on the passenger side in the back. Madeleine, by this time, made her appearance and handed the keys over to Juniper.  “I say we put him and Madeleine in the back.”
“Why don’t you sit in the back with him?” Juniper asked.
“I’m not going to fit in the back with him. I am barely going to fit in this car as it is.” He shook his head.  “This may come as a shock, I am a large man. I suspect Waterfall was not in any way... impressive.”
“He was smart, and a wonderful man,” she replied. “And his name was Rivers.”
“And that is why you are single,” he said.
“Let's just get him in the car and then you can go back to hiding under the rock you came from,” Juniper said.
It was Henry’s turn to roll his eyes and he began to maneuver his friend in the back of the car. Soon, after a great deal of grunting and positioning, he was finally in and moaning in pain.  “I think I’ve broken something,” Joey said quietly.
“I am sure you have,” Madeleine said.  “Hen, you are going to have to come with us, there is no way the two of us can get him out. You ride up front with Juniper.” Before either of them could protest, Madeleine finished her statement with a definitive. “Now!”
Juniper sat in the driver's seat. Henry sat in the passenger side and went to buckle himself in. His elbow swung up and connected with her cheek. “Watch it!” she cried out.
“Watch what?” he said, frozen in space. “What did I do?”
“You hit me in the face!” Juniper exclaimed.
Henry brought his arm down, hitting her again.  “Oh... uh... Sorry.”
Juniper sighed. “Let’s just go, you brute.”
####
Juniper yawned and sat up the next morning as the sun streamed in through the window.  She wasn’t sure what time of the day it was, because once they had returned from the hospital, Madeleine had taken Joey to bed. She had finally crawled into her own bed, just as the light was starting to change.
She sat up and put her feet on the floor, getting her bearings before heading into the bathroom. She didn’t bother to look, or even knock, when she opened the door up and was hit with a wall of steam in her face.
“Um, it's occupied!” A deep voice said.
Juniper stood there a second, gazing at an almost completely nude Henry standing in the shower, a towel barely covering him. She quickly turned and shut the door.  “You should have locked it!”
“You should have knocked when you saw it was closed.” He called out through the door.  “Manners would state that you would.”
“Why are you even still here?” She asked. “And are you going to be very much longer? I have to use the loo.”
She could hear him muttering from the other side of the door. He opened the door, looked down at her, now fully dressed.  “I am still here because after you just unceremoniously went to bed, someone had to stay up with the invalid.”
“I heard that…” Joey’s voice came from the bedroom at the end of the hall.
He sighed.  “Someone had to help Madeleine make sure he was okay. And since I was the first one up this morning, I figured I could grab a shower after my run. As it is, I’m going to have to go straight to the comic book store when I leave here.”
“Why would you have to go… OH MY GOD!” she said and lunged out of the way as a huge black and white dog ran toward her.  “WHAT IS THAT?”
Henry looked at her as she hid behind him.  “That is my dog.”
“It’s fucking huge!” she said.  “Keep it away from me!”
“Kal, go lay down,” he said. The dog turned in the hall and trotted back to find himself a spot on the carpet.
Madeleine came into the hall. “It’s about time you got up.” She smiled.  “Brekkie is in the kitchen. I am going to check on Romeo,” she said as she glided past them and down the hall.
He nodded at her and turned back so he was facing Juniper.  “As you were going to ask me why I was going to the store. I work there,” he said.  “That is why I am still here and why I have clothes and things for a shower here.” He leaned in to her, his blue eyes staring into her hazel ones. “Nosey.”
She gasped. “I am not!”
Henry didn’t reply and headed out to the living room.   “Kal, come on boy, let’s go,” he said and opened the door to the apartment.  “Bye!” He called out behind him.
Juniper stomped her foot. She had never met a man who so infuriated her to her very core. She went into the bathroom and slammed the door, hoping to never see him again.
