Did you know that there is a crossover between these two titles?
Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy are two platform games published by Vivendi Universal Games. They are developed by Vicarious Visions for the Game Boy Advance. They were released in North America on June 3, 2004, and in Europe on June 25, 2004 under the names Crash Bandicoot Fusion and Spyro Fusion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The games are the tenth installment in the Crash Bandicoot series of video games, and the eighth installment in the Spyro series of video games  For both series, the games are the fourth installments made for the Game Boy Advance. This crossover is set after the events of their games for that platform. The story of the games center on a plot to wreak havoc on the universe by the main antagonists Doctor Neo Cortex and Ripto, who have recently joined forces. The protagonists of the story, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, must team up and defeat Doctor Cortex and Ripto along with their genetically modified minions. This game marks Brendan O'Brien's last appearance in the series as the voice of Crash.

04. Crash Bandicoot Purple & Spyro Orange (Vicarious Visions, 2004)
Tumblr media
Watch me suffer through this game here!
After the shock and disappointment I experienced learning about the cancelled Crash & Spyro platformer title by Toys for Bob, it only seemed fitting to revisit the crossover(s) we actually got.
Hoo boy, this one is rough.
Split into two simultaneous releases and sporting a link cable trading mechanic a-la Pokémon (except in this case, it's for almost completely functionless trading cards), this duology falls into the oft-maligned "minigame adventure" genre, with a series of side-scrolling hub areas stringing together a collection of non sequitur challenges into a very basic campaign.
The more platforming-focused minigames in Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage are relatively inoffensive (having been built on the same foundation as Vicarious Visions' previous Game Boy Advance Crash titles), but the often auto-scrolling flight and vehicle-focused segments that make up the majority of Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy are particularly tedious. As if to add insult to injury, at about the 85% mark, it's revealed that the player is also expected to backtrack for the sake of completing every side objective or replaying each minigame multiple times in order to unlock the final area and confront the incredibly brief and unsubstantial final boss.
What on paper should be an exciting crossover of gaming icons more closely resembles publisher-mandated shovelware than the comparatively solid prior GBA output of either franchise. I can't even say I'd recommend it to morbidly curious Spyro or Crash fans; it really is nothing more than pure 2000-aughts handheld filler; your time is better spent elsewhere.

From: Nintendo World (August 2001)
The cat in blue created by Namco is also one of the most popular characters on other platforms, and now makes his debut on Game Boy Advance, in a brand new adventure. Klonoa: Empire of Dreams is a mixture of puzzle and action, in which the feline hero fights against an emperor who has forbidden his citizens to dream. On the handheld, he is in two dimensions, but is no stranger to his previous three-dimensional adventures. For those who enjoy action games like in the old days, full of obstacles and puzzles, Empire of Dreams is more than perfect. Like Spyro, Klonoa is a hero that is all about the Game Boy Advance. More games to come!

Since this is having a resurgence kinda,
Reblog for a larger sample-size or something? Or not. Your call!
Context for each below.
Back in, like, 2016 or something, the Secondary School I was at did lifeguard training as part of its PE curriculum; one of the activities involved was rescuing a hollow plastic dummy. When it was my turn, I grabbed it, but it suddenly filled with water, and I was suddenly dragged to the bottom of the pool; eventually I managed to let go of it, and I was allowed to sit on one of the benches next to the pool for the rest of the session.
Last year, around Halloween, my dad randomly phoned me up and asked if I wanted him to buy me an axe or scythe from the Halloween section of Tesco. I said I wanted a scythe, and he bought it; it was very plain, and consisted of a hollow plastic tube and a simple-looking, poorly-moulded blade that slid over the top. It eventually got pretty badly-damaged, and my brother - in a fit of sleep-deprived impulsiveness - secretly bought me a cooler, much higher-quality one (the blade is actually a skull wearing a mask with a long "beak" attached to it!)
Technically, I don't have all the Skylanders figures I got when I played, since at least one is still at the flat I used to live in, but otherwise I have all of them. Also I only had Giants, Swap Force and Trap Team; I missed out on playing Spyro's Adventure, and I only had a Wii at the time so I couldn't play most of the games after it (except for Superchargers Racing, which is literally just the racing minigame from the fifth game but released on its own).
Play Hard Reset. Do it do it now. It's short, kinda frustrating at times and has questionable writing and voice-acting, but the aesthetic is really cool and it has an interesting mechanic where the player only has two weapons, but can unlock different modes for them that effectively mean the player has ten. I haven't played much of Hard Reset Redux, but it seems to be the same, but balanced a bit better and with much better dialogue.
I got into ZScript late last year, but I've got pretty good at both the inheritence system and making original stuff (which is technically jus the same as using inheritence, but you have to define everything yourself.
I can't remember exactly when this happened, but it was around either Halloween or Christmas (since Nightmare Before Christmas was on TV) and possibly in 2018; I made myself a cup of tea, but didn't notice that the kettle had limescale remover put into it (aside from the colour being a bit off). When I started drinking it, I immediately spat it out, and since then it's been known in my family as A Thing I Did Once™.
I love Sea Power! They make good music! Check out Let The Dancers Inherit The Party, it is their best album in my opinion!
Yep, done this one. Haven't finished Quake 1's second expansion and I'm only on, like, map 2 of Quake II, but I've played all of Quake IV's story campaign. Also, if it counts, Quake III's "singleplayer campaign", which is just a series of increasingly-difficult bot matches.
When I got Reaper one of the first things I recorded was a scream, which coincidentally ended up being a scarily-good impression of the headless bombers from Serious Sam.
A while ago, I tried playing the Game Boy Advance version of Bionicle Heroes with an emulator, since I wanted to check it out; when I tried playing it with VBA, it crashed on the second screen, and while another emulator (namely No$GBA) allowed to, I had to make a DS4 controller-profile specifically for use with it, since it wasn't registering my inputs properly with my regular one. Eventually I just bought a Bionicle Heroes GBA cartridge online so I could play using my DS Lite.
Anyway here's the new scythe.

The Handheld Klonoa Games
*Played and Written in July 2022
Allow me to recount the great era of GBA platformers. I'm talking about the age when Rayman 3, Crash Bandicoot 2, Spyro 2 all came out...on the Game Boy Advance. Franchises wanted to take advantage of the portable market so they paired down their gameplay to make a few GBA games. They all have this certain flavor to them. Having pre-rendered "cut scenes", being somewhat of a soft remake of its corresponding console game, being questionably canon. As someone who spent that era without a Playstation, these games were my only window into some of these franchises. Crash Bandicoot is a 2D sidescroller first and a 3D platformer second to me. Spyro was a mid isometric collectethon to me for the longest time. Rayman was also a sidescroller...which isn’t weird at all given the history of that brand. I loved these games dearly growing up, but I had the misfortune of not even knowing Klonoa existed, so I never got to play the portable takes on the series framework.
After playing all 3 Portable Klonoa platformers, I can declare that they have the same vibes as the games I discussed before. While the portable Klonoa games can't interact with the foreground and background, they are more or less the same gameplay wise as the console games. The rest of its peers try to be similar to the games they are based off of, but are noticeably reeled back. Here, not much is lost in the translation, so not much is lost quality wise. Because the same philosophies of Klonoa 1 and 2 can be taken full advantage of, the three portable Klonoa Platformers end up being at the top of this sub genre.
Klonoa: Moonlight Museum is surprisingly great. I think dig it more than the first Klonoa game. It's less of a straight forward platformer you try to master and more of a puzzle platformer that uses Klonoa gameplay. The actual platforming aspect isn't that impressive, but these puzzles get pretty big brained eventually. The stages take advantage of the Wonder Swan’s screen and uses it to give levels verticality which allows for more space for the puzzles to stretch out. The levels start to feel like Zelda dungeons after a while, where you are required to have an intimate understanding of the stage’s structure. None of them are as complex as some of the better dungeons per say, but they are, at their worst, Breath of the Wild tier. There are no bosses and the story is told in a rather bland way so it is not as impactful or complete of an experience as the first game. But it's a more stimulating product moment to moment. You really have to get the hang the elements introduced in each world and how they interact with Klonoa’s abilities. It’s more thought out. It’s also somehow more considerate. I love how enemies don't just respawn without warning and how bomb enemies have a countdown. These are good quality of life additions that I didn't expect from a Wonder Swan game. All it really needs is a map and it's basically perfect in terms of delivering its content painlessly.
Klonoa: Empire of Dreams is incredibly consistent. I think the puzzles are a bit harder in the other two, but Empire of Dreams makes up for it by introducing more mechanics to interact with, having color to make out objects and enemies easier, and breaking up the puzzles with action stages. Moonlight Museum was 100% just levels with puzzles you can solve at your own pace. Empire changes the composition to allow auto scrolling levels to test your platforming abilities, Snowboard levels to test your reflexes, and Boss fights to cap off each distinct world. The levels are also designed in a way where it's not as easy to get lost. It's mostly a semi linear puzzle gauntlet aside from a psuedo Zelda dungeon where things are all over the place. It loops you around way better and cuts down on back tracking significantly. There’s not much else to say about this game other that. It’s good the whole way through with no baggage attached.
Klonoa 2: Dream Champ Tournament sure has...ideas. The look around feature is welcome for sure. The edgy rival is pretty cool. Tournament arc story and level structure is novel. These are all good ideas, but only a fraction of the ideas present in Dream Champ Tournament. Having a ranking system that requires perfection is an idea. Having the surfing mini game be more similar to a Crash Bandicoot Boulder Level is an idea. Having the boss fights be timed levels is an idea. These aren't good ideas, but they are there. I don't think the good additions outweigh the bad ones, but I appreciate how much they tried for a game that, honestly, would be objectively better if the did the same thing the previous GBA title did. Also these puzzles are nightmares. They are true specters of the night. This might be the hardest puzzle game I've played in a while, sans the later levels in Mario’s Super Picross. But these puzzles aren’t hard because they are poorly crafted, I’m just stupid. And that’s why this game has my undying respect. While it may be my least favorite Klonoa Platformer, I will always feel mentally inadequate to it. And I value that a lot for some reason.
Overall, Empire of Dreams is the best one, but all three of these games are great and have cemented my identity as a Klonoa Shill.

Game boy advance was my first ever Nintendo handheld console! I would spend hours playing the isometric Spyro games on it (Spyro: Season of Ice, Spyro 2: Season of Flame and Attack of the Rhynocs, Spyro Orange), Mr.Nutz, all of the Sonic Advance games, Sonic Battle, Crash Bandicoot: XS, Crash Purple and Donald Duck: Quack Attack!

Games I'd have expected to see added to Nintendo Switch Online
Spent far too long making a list of games that I see every reason for Nintendo to add to Nintendo Switch Online.

———SNES——— Prince of Persia Mario All-Stars + World Smash TV Ms. Pac-Man Super Bomberman 2

——Categories I ruled out——
Remade or has arcade ports on Switch (Mappy Land, Tony Hawk 2, Street Fighter II)
Hard to licence (Any Final Fantasy game, Crazy Taxi: Hitch a Ride, anything with Disney or sports, Banjo-Tooie)
What Nintendo CEOs apparently see as old shames (Mother 3, Mega Man for some reason, portable Pokémon games, Super Mario Bros DX)
Game Boy games vastly inferior to home console games with the same names (Need for Speed games, Sega Rally Championship, Donkey Kong Land 1-3)
Unplayable framerates (Grand Theft Auto Advance)
