A place I forgot I had created and did nothing with, until recently. Thanks, Elon! Keeping this around as a dumb place to post my ramblings/personal art until I find a better fit for it or leave it in the dust. PFP art by the talented genopaint!

Really shitty Halloween image I rushed to get out the door before Halloween officially ended where I'm at (as evidenced by the Tombstone being completely blank). Hope everyone looking at this had a decent enough Holiday!

how do you choose who to donate to? it always feels like such an awful choice, everyone needs it so badly but i can only give to a few people at a time with what i have. how does anyone choose who to help, or how much to give each person?
gazafunds.com loads a randomized fundraiser for people with this anxiety
you could also buy esims for Gazans or donate to Gaza Municipality Project

To add onto this, I think the loss of RHDN accepting newer submissions really hurts the 80-90's game console hacking scene. There really aren't a lot of sites I'm aware of outside of RHDN that offered the ability to distribute game patches in such a clean way! Especially for 'niche' titles. You want to distribute your Super Mario World hack? Ah, that's no issue. SMWCentral is right around the corner. However, finding a place to promote and share patches for say an obscure Japanese only Game Boy title become a bit trickier. I think RHDN's 'News' page and recent updates/random screenshots really gave people an area to discover and discuss these freely. I think the site still saw enough foot traffic that people would see those passing through. I get that since everything has been backed up to the IA it's not going to all disappear overnight, but man. A lot of things are going to be trickier to recommend to people because you're going to have to dig through that archive if the author hasn't been active in a couple of years. If I ever do anything else, or want to find a new hack, I gotta look elsewhere. I'm really hoping another centralized website for sharing .IPS/.BPS files pops up and picks up where RHDN left off. I'm not sure I feel comfortable touching most of the drama surrounding the decision to shut down new submissions, either.
Sad news, romhacking.net is shutting down.
This makes me sick to my stomach. Romhacking.net has been the place to go for ways to play english fan translations, quality of life hacks, bug fixes, creative twists on existing games that maybe let you play as other characters or have new abilities, or total conversions that essentially take your favorite games and make something new out of it, not to mention many valuable tools for learning how to make your own romhacks. It even hosted work arounds for modern problems. Did you know it's now possible to play Duck Hunt and other light gun games on an LCD TV now? Before, it was only possible to play it on an old fashioned CRT TV. You could also play Gyromite without ROB the Robot, and Mario and Wario without a SNES Mouse.
When I would play a retro game, I'd tend to look for the best possible way to play it. More often than not, that usually meant just playing the game as is, but there are some games that are practically unplayable in their default form. Festers Quest needed to impliment all the changes from the European version of the game into the NTSC release in order for the game to play as intended, without shots disappear when they collide with walls. The original Zelda and Metroid encouraged players to draw their own maps because there was no map system included, but both games have hacks that include maps. Many NES games without the ability to save your progress now have Sram saving, and can save your game on a real NES.
I'm sure there will still be romhacking websites. Specialized sites for Mario 64, Sonic the Hedgehog, Zelda, MSU1, and Super Mario World still exist. There's a few lesser known hacking sites I won't mention, places that distribute hacks, and youtube channels that showcase them. But this is still a huge loss that retro gaming will take a long time to recover from.
So I urge you, if you like any romhack, please learn who the creator of the hack is, and follow them wherever you can find them. And boost their work whenever you can.

This is a fascinating little read! Pretty interesting to learn that apparently this was just a developer screwing around and he didn't add this with the intention of giving pirates an easy way to play around with burned discs. It still has the novelty of being snuck under Sony's nose. The only other thing that I can think of that's somewhat comparable is Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 intentionally leaving instructions to a piracy group. In said instructions, the developer explains how the Sega Genesis emulator used in the collection worked, so anyone could use the emulator to play whatever Genesis titles that could properly boot: DCEmulation • View topic - Smash Pack programmer wanted Echelon to release ROM Loader (archive.org)
(Credit to The Cutting Room Floor for this information. The archived forum thread I linked first as it provides a bit more context not initially covered in the Wiki entry.) The extra kicker is that the collection was released onto the market the same day Sega announced they were discontinuing manufacturing of the Dreamcast system, so this very much seems like an intentional 'final present' to everybody who had the system.
This is wild; apparently Martin Piper - a developer on Alien: Ressurections for the PS1 - helped ship the game with a secret cheat code that turned the game into a boot disc that allowed you to boot any pirated PS1 game from the console.
That's a huge (and super cool!) secret to hide for over two decades!

A Crash drawing I kinda rushed through. Really wanted to try drawing him again as sort of a followup to an older piece I did ages ago, but with much better proportions. The original sketch is below:

Doctor Gerald Fritz ~ The World's Greatest Self-Proclaimed Genius! Far off the coast of the town of Blueburg lies this nefarious man, who lives in a small castle that he inherited from his family line. Tragically wronged years ago in his adolescence, he now plans to take over the town of Blueburg to prove his own self-worth...and to satisfy his fragile ego. While he's very eager to scheme, his own over-confidence usually throws him (and others) into danger. As a result, Fritz usually has to play the (Anti-)Hero just to live another day. Tragic for him, hilarious to whoever's watching from a safe distance. The only other person keeping him company is some guy he hired off the streets who thinks he can fly planes pretty well. He apparently needs a way in and out of the city and is too stubborn to admit he isn't terribly good with robotics...Y'know, if he's employing people, maybe he isn't that bad. The original sketched illustration is also included down below:
