Getting ready for winter
Temperatures have started to dip below freezing so I spent some time last week on winterizing chores.
After watching (and paying) the landscaping company blow out our sprinkler system last year, I was able to do it myself this year. My compressor is only 40 gallons so it takes longer, but I install the snow sticks along the driveway while waiting for the compressor tank to refill.
My big innovation this year is a new home built solution for containing snowblower snowmelt while also preventing rust marks on the garage floor from the steel skid plates. I found this large tub and four small ramps on Amazon and then connected the ramps with steel joist hangers from the hardware store. I’m very proud of it.
We also have a lot of heat tape on the roof and in the gutters to prevent ice dams. Last year the installers just plugged them in with thermo cubes which meant that the tape was on whenever the temp was in a certain range, even if there wasn’t any snow present. Heat tape draws a lot of current so it’s expensive to use, so installed Lutron remote controlled exterior plugs and SwitchBot digital thermometers so I can turn them on from my phone when they are needed. Unfortunately the new plugs required me to install new outlet covers too.
The last chore was cleaning pine needles off the roof and gutters. I’m thankful we don’t have deciduous trees so we don’t have to rake leaves, but the small fir needles can be troublesome. Even though I have gutter guards, the needles were able to get through the guard and clog the gutter.

It’s coming up 60 years since the YF 12 was first announced!
Feb. 29, 1964: President Lyndon B. Johnson publicly revealed the existence of the Top Secret Lockheed YF-12A, a Mach 3+ interceptor designed and built by Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson’s “Skunk Works.”
President Lyndon Johnson referred to the interceptor as the “A-11.”
The YF-12A interceptor is very similar to its A-12 Oxcart and SR-71A Blackbird stablemates. It is a sizeable twin-engine delta-wing aircraft flown by a pilot and weapons system operator. Because of the altitudes at which the F-12 operates, the crew wears S901F full-pressure suits produced by the David Clark Company.
After Johnson’s announcement, the media wanted to see a YF 12… on Sept 30 1964 they went to Edwards Air Force Base to see it. The airplane was still hot since he had just arrived from Groom Lake, Area 51. Since the aircraft was still hot when it went into the hangers at Edwards, the smoke detectors picked that up, and the water sprinkler system took over and drenched the YF 12s.
Kelly Johnson, who had a dry whit, said at least we got a plane washed out of this deal.
Part of the reason why Johnson announced the YF 12 was to hide the CIA‘s A-12.
An airline pilot had threatened to tell an aviation magazine. They were on the verge of publishing it when they stepped in and announced the YF 12..
Whenever an A-12 was spotted, they would say no, that’s YF 12.
No one knew any difference. Later, when an A-12 crashed, they would blame it on an SR 71. This outraged Kelly Johnson as he did not want the SR 71 to be unfairly blamed.

Day 1 of Renovation
That first morning of waking up in the Wagon Wheel apartment was a memorable one.
We all know what it’s like to wake up somewhere new and have a few moments of confusion and disorientation in your new surroundings. Couple that with some serious self doubts and anxiety and that was pretty much my experience on June 2nd. I had my air mattress and sleeping bag stretched out on the bedroom floor and the apartment was eerily quiet. It had a strange smell, of something that had sat empty for a while. I remember laying on my air mattress for a long time, wondering where do I even begin with what was before me.
The apartment and property had no running water. The previous owners had winterized the property and then when it was turned back on for the inspection there were major leaks all over the place. Faucets were shooting out water in the rooms and the pipes in the crawl space were so pitted they had pinhole leaks all along them. So, no running water meant I had to brush my teeth with bottled water and go and use the town’s park bathrooms for everything else.
My first order of business was to begin cleaning up the property as best I could. There was alot of junk that needed to be cleaned out, not just in the old rooms but in the apartment, the lobby, and outside around the motel. I called around town for a giant dumpster to be delivered which to my surprise came pretty quickly. It would soon be my experience that getting people to return phone calls in Pinedale was a challenge. Heck, even getting my phone to work was a challenge. It would make calls one moment and then the next it would be out of service. It was frustrating. I didn’t have internet access so I had to go sit outside the library and use their free wifi at night or hit up Pine Coffee to sit and work with Kayleigh on things.
When the dumpster arrived I started to go ham on the clean up. I walked the property and picked up all the trash that had accumulated over the years. There was an old car parked on the “lawn” behind room 15 and a nasty dog fence that was at one point used to hold a dog? The lawn was a bunch of tall weeds and a defunct sprinkler system was uprooted everywhere. I ripped it all out and threw it away.
The laundry room was by far the worst cluttered space on the property. The previous owners had built shelving on the walls that was filled with old towels and linens and random junk that had accumulated over the course of 40 years. I knew the laundry room had to be a major focus so I started gutting it in anticipation of making it the first space that got a make over.
In the apartment there were closets filled with hangers, so many hangers, boxes of hangers. It was a hanger fetish to the extreme! The refrigerator had old food in it and soda that had exploded when the temperatures froze. One cabinet still had forgotten items, mainly ancient bottles of liquor, that were left behind. The lobby space had a bunch of dead potted plants. All of it went in the dumpster, to the point that this massive dumpster was getting to the point of over flowing. It felt good to purge and see a little progress, however small it was.

The SR-71 was always supposed to be called the SR-71 (strategic reconnaissance); the part of the Air Force that the SR-71 flew under was SAC , which stands for Strategic Air Command.
General Curtis LeMay was the man who ruled over (SAC) he was Chief of staff of the Air Force from 1961 to 1964 ( when you have four stars, you’re just called General) . He was terrific at his job, perhaps a bit overzealous. His idea was to reward his people with spot promotions. Even if you were years below the zone, if you were doing an excellent job for SAC, you could be promoted early, as my father, Butch Sheffield, was to Major at the age of 31.
LeMay received his fourth star in 1951 at age 44; LeMay became the youngest American four-star general since Ulysses S. Grant.
After President Kennedy‘s tragic assassination, the new President Lyndon Johnson was advised about the A-12. (A for article, or Ark-Angel )12 it was primarily intended for the overflying of the Soviet Union. So, it had to remain a top-secret airplane. However, the aircraft was never flown over the Soviet Union that we know of. Because when the U-2 was shot down on May 1, 1960, the United States pledged not to fly over the Soviet Union again. Johnson decided that we needed to tell the public something about the A-12 but not the whole story. Instead, he announced that an A-11 was being introduced. The A-11 was the name of the A-12 before the last modification. The A- 11 did not exist.
This February 1964 announcement led to the YF-12s being quickly flown from Area 51 down to Edwards Air Force Base in California. They were flown down so quickly that they had to beat the Press down to Edwards. The heat from the YF-12 turned on the sprinkler system in the hanger! The YF-12 was the interceptor version of A-12.
Then on July 25, 1964, President Johnson made another announcement.
At the time, The Air Forces version of the A-12 was called the RS-71, but Air Force Chief of Staff Curtis LeMay preferred calling it SR for Strategic Reconnaissance. The designation was changed right before Johnson’s announcement, but the press materials couldn’t be updated in time. When LBJ called it the SR-71, the media speculated he’d misread the name, forcing the service to rename the plane after its Commander in Chief mistake.
President Johnson did not mix up the name.
The truth is Curtis LeMay had convinced President Johnson that this was a better name… the SR 71. So, for many years, there has been this fictitious tale going around that President Johnson had dyslexia and switched the letters from RS to SR. That is not true at all! He read the news release just as it was written and modified by General Curtis LeMay. So that’s the rest of the story.

Some things that help me in a multiple-ADHD home
1. Share tasks- you put the laundry in the washer, I switch it, whoever's clothes it is hang it
SPEAKING OF HANG IT
2. Open closet upgrade- hang everything except socks and underwear. Replace your dresser with another hanging rack
3. Claim a cabinet. We have a pantry for regular food, cabinets for certain things, and a cabinet for only my nerd shit. Nobody touches my cabinet- instant noodles, snacks, ingredients for things only I cook. It doesn't matter if WE have it, 'I' have it.
4. Collective grocery list group text is LIFE-CHANGING
5. Thou Shalt Not buy any dish that doesn't go in the dishwasher
5.5. The dishwasher doesn't have to be full to run it. You can run it twice if dishes aren't clean. Not to advocate wasting water, but there are hundreds of golf courses and estates and automated sprinklers, you're not going to doom the environment by running the dishwasher again.
6. Scarf and hat hangers. I get them at Dollar Tree and hang hats on a belt hangers. Also there is a shoe organizer full of gloves/dog leashes/etc nailed to my wall by the door.
7. Lost and found box on the dryer for pens/cash/keys found in clothes or machines.
8. Emergency pods in car/laptop/purse with $20, a wall plug, and C-type and micro cords for charging phones/accessories. I put them in a headphones case from dollar tree.
I think the best part of 2022 for me after getting ADHD diagnosis is probably discovering home optimisation tricks aka how to have adhd-friendly house.
here’s some of the list I could think on top of my head now :
1. The concept of open wardrobe, cabinet, and closet to help object impermanence.
2. Sticker label at every corner of your house as reminder (turning off the switch, close the door, etc).
3. Hang dangling keychain at cabinet on top of your head so after you open it, as you see something dangling, it will catch your attention to close the cabinet door.
4. Hang every washed clean clothes after laundry using hanger instead of folding it.
5. Have a basket system for dirty laundry and clean laundry.
6. Changing tatami bed style (the one where the bed is on the floor) to loft bed, because being on the floor can be bad for ADHD productivity AND having higher bed introduces some challenges to make rest better.
7. The 5 minutes rule : if you can get it done in 5 minutes, then you have to do it immediately. Example, hanging your outside clothes after coming back home only take less than 5 minutes, so you do it immediately so that you don’t just pile them on the floor or on the sofa.
Anything else that I miss?
Share yours here.
I might update this post whenever I found new cool ways of optimizing my home.

Specifications and Standards for Pipe Clamps
The selection of appropriate pipe clamps requires considering specifications and requirements:
Pipe Size: Clamps need to be compatible with the particular diameter of the pipe they're intended to aid.
Material: Pipe clamp fabric choice depends on elements just like the pipe cloth, working environment, and load necessities. Stainless steel is a common desire for its sturdiness and corrosion resistance, at the same time as nylon or PVC clamps are suitable for low-strain applications.
Load Rating: Clamps are rated for the maximum load they are able to correctly assist. Choosing a clamp with a good enough load score is critical for making sure device integrity.
Standards: Reputable manufacturers adhere to industry requirements like ASTM International (ASTM) or American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for cloth residences and overall performance requirements.

My father whispered to me when he first held me, a name my mother loved, a name taken from a grandmother. Growing up, I would abandon it at the drop of a hat, in favor of a noun or the name of a character I liked, or a collection of syllables that tumbled jubilantly on my tongue. None of these lasted more than a week.
When I was nine, I read a very well-known fantasy book. It had been adapted into a very well-known movie. The protagonist had my name. She was bold (which I was not), and stubborn (which I was), and clever (which I hoped to be), and she was female.
On her, the name sounded vivid and bright, bold yellow sunshine and turquoise, like a forget-me-not. On me, it felt like things seen through a frosted-over window. Faded blue and the pale color of frozen butter, wisps of wrinkled wisteria.
When I was seventeen, the year I slipped on another set of pronouns like a beaded bracelet over my wrist (the year I learned I could have more than one set if I wanted to, the year I started collecting them as any magpie would), I slipped my given name off of my shoulders and folded it up in my cold hands. I found another name, one with a glowing orange ember nestled in twists of brown dark wood, and I brought it inside me and it warmed my core. The old name I would have returned, hung neatly on its hanger and delivered to my mother, but instead I kept it in an old dusty dressbox, to be taken out again and worn superficially, as a costume, when I attended certain family gatherings.
When I was eighteen, I went to university, a strange old college on a hill. I did not grow into a young woman, but I did not mind because I was me. For the first time no one I lived with knew my old, dead, wisteria-withered name. I burned orange, I burned bright. No one used their birth names there, which made it all the merrier, because that’s what college is for, right? Figuring out what fits you. I loved the name I’d chosen, but I still cycled through moniker after alias, just to feel the joy of the syllables.
I learned many things while I was there. I asked people before taking their pictures. I carried a supply of my own food. Iron washers from my thieving friends in the scene shop clangled joyfully around my neck (I experimented with personal style, queer as the self I was). I was kind to insects and I left milk outside my dorm room door at night, and I was delighted that no one chastised me, as my parents had, for being overfriendly to the wild animals. (You know, almost every animal likes attention at some point, and reading my stories out loud is a great way to justify quality time.)
I met people. I met professors who cared about my learning, fellow students with stories to share, RAs fiercer than any dragon to defend their charges. There was the sick new boy to whom I fed soup once, on a whim, when I was feeling homesick and making use of the kitchen, and later he gave me a blown glass flower. There was the kid who borrowed some of my baking butter, and was so profusely and profoundly grateful without ever quite saying “thank you.” There was the girl I met in my sophomore year, with the long black hair and five ear piercings, and we became best friends and we talked about names.
Her name started out rock-black, though I could never tell if that was simply an association with the color of her hair. In the middle, there sparkled the vowels and the twists of consonants, bright metal and stone in the depths of a cave. I didn’t quite believe all the stories she told, but then I read her some ones of mine that were not true. She’d named herself for a bird of the sea, plucked her girl’s name from one no one meant for a girl. We talked about ways one might come to know these things, and the kinds of things one could learn on the edges.
She liked the edges; she learned things. She bartered and gambled for changes of the kind she needed most. I worried for her rarely, because I knew she was so careful. But careful doesn’t always cut it out here.
The second week before graduation, I went looking for her. I found, readily enough, a place where she had been, and I found someone who didn’t want to give her back. I asked them what they wanted, and they asked what she was worth.
I would have said, “my life,” but then I would never see her again.
I would have said, “my heart,” but I needed that to love her.
So instead I said, “A name,” and I watched moon eyes glow with an unearthly-wide smile.
“Not any name will do,” said the mouth, and maybe something behind it.
“I will give you my birth Name, the one my mother gave me and my father whispered as I cried.”
They stretched out themself, and curled loose around me, and I knew I would have to sell this. So I said the name I hadn’t used in years, said it with all the cornflower and yellowyellowyellow of that heroine from long ago.
They gibbered, and they stretched out one palm, and my best friend in the entire world stood on the cobbles to my left, and, no time for happy reunions, we ran like hell across the sprinkler-soaked sidewalk for the saltlick safety of our dorm, because I didn’t know how long it would take the creature in the courtyard to realize all I’d given them was a handful of dried-up wisteria.
