Slave or Freedom?

AN: This is my entry for  @theimaginesyouneveraskedfor Writing Challenge. My time period is ancient Rome and the pairing is Stucky x Reader ( though it not really turned out as one- sorry).

I once planned on making it an angsty and dark story, though after I wrote the first half, writersblock struck me. SO this is what I got and I hope you like it. Maybe I will try to do my plan another time ! Have fun^^

Warning: slavery (historical), sexual harassment against a female

A month. That was how long the young woman had already been with the fat man who was currently praising every little detail he could think of about her  to everyone who could be an interested buyer

Yes, buyer- the young female was one of the many unfortunate souls to be sold into slavery.

And so she stood under the canopy of a ´larger´ stand, chained to a wooden beam – Naked.

Her current owner (the seller) luckily was one of the more ´high end´ slave traders adnd so her and the others were treated rather well, with food, water- and shadow.

With nothing else to do, did the female look around the busy market. Slaves, owners and free people were walking around, doing purchases of different kinds or just strolling through the stands.

I used to do that. How fate can change.

“She is young. Still has her innocence and would make and would make a perfect house slave. I have her for a month now. Trained her myself and can vouch for the quality.”, the leering voice of her seller caught her attention. He was standing right next to her with another person though she didn’t dare to look at them to see who it might be- he did not like that and she had learned that the hard way.

´Unless ordered, never look at any free person. No one wants to see a slaves face!´, echoed his painful lesson through her head and she had supress a wince.

“150 Coins and she can be yours.”, the merchant offered happy.

“How can I know that you don’t lie to me and she really has her innocence? I don’t like to pay for damaged goods. I demand proof.”, the interested customer hollered. He sounded old and she did not like the way the conversation hinted. A dark shiver went down her body.

What?

“Well, if you want, you could check for yourself. Though I must charge you for any damage you cause. You know- to compensate the damaged goods.”, the merchant offered.

“Whatever. I don’t care if the quality is worth it in the end. Slave. Come here.”, the interested man hollered, and the female was jerked sideways towards him, “Lean forward and spread your legs.”

Tears gathered in her eyes and even though she did not want to do what was demanded from her, she complied. The world of pain she would otherwise enter were far scarier at that moment.

A big hand moved down her spine and came to a rest on her ass, ready to move between her legs and make that check, when another male voice spoke up.

“You said you want 150 for her. I will give you 250 just the way she is now. No checks, no refunds later.”, this voice was deeper than the other two, and colder at the same time.

“Oi. I was already looking at this slave.”

“250 and she is yours.”, the Merchant ignored the first interested buyer, for the far more lucrative sounding one.

“Here.”, she once again heard the new person say, followed by the sound of a sack of coins being thrown and caught, “now get your hands of my purchase before I call the guards and let you be arrested for damaging what I own. And you. Take of her shackles and chains and give her something to cover her with. I don’t like people to look at what is mine.”

At once her feet and arms were freed and a fabric was tossed at her.

“A pleasure doing business with you. Please come back. I will give you a discount on your next purchase.”

“Will see. I don’t have time. Come with me.”, her new owner growled, after accepting the paperwork from the merchant, a strong hand clutched around her upper arm. Though instead dragging her along with force, he more or less guided her through the crowds and towards their destination.

Her eyes were cast onto the floor in front of her the whole time.

He brought her further and further away from the city-centre and into one of the bigger and more elite neighbourhoods. One large estate adjoined the other and the longer they walked the bigger they got; at least if the distance between the gated were any indication.

And they kept walking.

Where are we going? My feet hurt; these stones are hot from the sun. What plans does he has with me?

She was pulled out of her musing, when the male suddenly took a sharp right turn.

“We are almost there.”, he spoke, his voice far softer and happy with anticipation(?). The young slave only nodded in understanding.

´Only speak if demanded!´, another one of the rules she had learned over the past four weeks or so.

To her relief, her new owner had planted trees every other meter along the path they took and so it was bathed in shadow more than not.

Out of the corner of the eyes she could see flowers and green grow alongside the path, and she had to admit: what she was able to see was beautiful. Even though it wasn’t much.

“We are here. Wait here. I will be back shortly.”, the man ordered, and once again she only nodded her understanding.

The cool marble of the floor easing the pain radiating from the soles of her feet.

Within seconds his footsteps had become silent and fear of her imminent future crept over her body. Trying to spend herself some comfort, she pulled her arms around her upper body.

Minutes past and the man still had not returned.

Where is he? What is he doing?

“What do you mean you brought a slave?! Are you fucking kidding me? You went out to place orders for the reception in three weeks. Not to buy a slave! We will talk about this later.”, another male voice stated angrily, and panic sat in her stomach; the man who bought her wasn´t allowed to do so? What now? He had said there would be ´no refunds´.

Please-

Footsteps came closer, and the young female tried to get as small as possible without changing her position.

She was visibly shaking now, and tears were ready to fall.

“Where did you leave her Bucky? I swear if you left her waiting in the sun-“

“She´s in the atrium, calm down. I am not stupid!”, the buyer growled back annoyed.

“It seems you are that stupid. She is barefoot. Don´t tell me you had her walk the whole way! What is your name.”, the new voice directed the last part at her.

“(y/n), Dominus.”, she whispered.

“(y/n), follow him. I will see to you later.”, the new man told her, his voice gentler than before, and she nodded in understanding.

Trying to figure out, where the first man was standing, the young woman lifted her head ever so slightly without losing her submissive stature.

“Come. I will show you where you will stay for the time being.”, the man that had spoken, was tall. Very tall -and muscular, with dark brown hair that was pulled back, his left arm covered by the dark tunic he was wearing.

Lowering her head once more, the young female walked towards said male and she thought she heard a sigh from both of them, alerting her at once.

Did I do something wrong?

 “This is where you will be staying. There is water you can use to wash, or drink- we have our own spring, so it is safe. There will be some clothes and food brought to you shortly. I advise you to rest. Steve and I have something to discuss in the meantime.”, the man, she had concluded was named Bucky, told her with a gentle voice, motioning at the room they had just stopped in front of, before turning around and walking to where they had come from.

Exhausted (mentally and physically) she stepped into the room and straight to the bed that stood beneath a small window (that was covered by wooded claps to keep most of the warm air out. To her surprise was the matrass softer than anticipated, as were the linen covering it.

This is nothing like the things I had with the Merchant. It is almost like back home.

With that thought in mind, her eyes grew heavy and she slipped into a light slumber.

She didn’t know how long she had been able to sleep, when a light shake pulled the young female out of her slumber.

“Wake up, my name is Wanda. I was asked to show you to the guest-bath to wash before dinner. The main bath we usually use are currently been cleaned, so don’t worry, I asked the Domini before I came here.”, a young woman with long and wavy brown hair smiled down at her, “Follow me, I will get you something new to wear and ointment for your feet. I cant believe he let you walk barefoot.”

Doing as told, (y/n) stood, flinching when her feet began to burn, but she tried to not let it show. But she was slow and had a slight limp in her steps, that didn’t go unnoticed by the other female.

“Don´t worry, it isn’t far, just down that hallway. Just a few more metres and then you can relax your feet in some cool water and wash the grime and sweat of your skin. You will feel a lot better after that, trust me. And if you need something while I am gone, just call.”, Wanda told you, opening the wooden door that revealed a large room with two big basins.

One was steaming with hot water and the other one must have been filled with cooler water, flowers and oils of different colours and scents littered the shelves and walls were painted with the pictures of relaxing gods and goddesses.

This is beautiful.

“Now, just get out of this crap and take care of you. I will be back in a bit with the promised closing. You seemed of either mine or Nats size. We will lend you some until you get your own clothing. Now go ahead, and don’t worry. NO ONE will dare to enter this bath without knocking. Everybody knows you are currently in here and both Bucky and Steve will have their heads if they still try to enter. Though one of the younger once is a bit chaotic and all over the place, though he doesn’t mean any harm and I promise you, he will turn as red as wine and then apologise while running into the wall because he closes his eyes and refuse to open them for minutes until he is sure he is FAR away. Dinner usually is eaten in three hours, so take your time.”, she smiled once again, chuckling at the memory of the young boy she was talking about.

“Thank you, Wanda.”, (y/n) whispered, her head bowed in a sign of respect and submission.

“No worries, see you later then.”, and with that, the young slave was all alone in this beautiful bath.

I should start with getting the dirt out of my feet and clean them properly, or they get infected.

Mentally planning what she would do, the young female filled a large bowl with water from the cool basin and sat on a beautifully carved bench, when the door swung open, almost causing her to have a cardiac arrest. The bowl hit the ground, causing the other person to have a cardiac arrest as well.

“Oh by the gods I am sorry. I – I forgot the towels and thought Wanda was just getting you- I am soooo sorry, please don’t tell Dominus Steve and Dominus Bucky, they will be mad, well not mad, more like disappointed and that even worse- I don’t want them to be disappointed. I swear I saw nothing, not that I even tried- I -I will just should up now and lay the towels here on the floor and leave. Yes leaving. I am terribly sorry- ouch- I swear it won´t – ouch- happen- ouch shit- again. See you later.”, a young boy cursed and stumbled over his own words, immediately turning a deep red shade and covering his eyes with the hand that was not carrying the towels. After placing the towels down on the floor, the young male managed to run into the wall three times before finding the door and escaping out of it.

Another “I apologise deeply.” Halled through the closed door one more time before there was silence again.

So, that must be the one Wanda was talking about. He really doesn’t seem to mean harm. It was almost adorable. But I need to hurry.

An hour went by, and (y/n) was just finished with rinsing out her hair with cold water, when a knock sounded from the door.

“(y/n) it´s me Wanda, may I come in? I have the clothes with me.”

“Yes.”, she answered, barely loud enough to be heard through the thick door. That slowly opened.

“Here, I didn’t know what colour you like, so I brought different kinds for you to choose from. The red ones are mine and the white and dark ones are Nats. Choose what you like and I will help you get dressed.”, the young woman smiled and laid five different garbs out for her to choose from.

Those are no slave dresses. What is going on?

Wanda must have noticed your hesitation, because she asked you if something was wrong.

“N-no. I- Its just. Those are not dressings for a slave. I would ruin them.”, she whispered, making herself smaller with every passing second.

“(y/n), that´s because you are no slave here. No one of us is, even though some of us where when we came here. Just like you. We are servants. We get paid and even have days of if we need them or don´t feel well. Everyone living in this villa is free and equal in their rights, even though Bucky and Steve are the domini.”, Wanda smiled fondly and reassuring, “Now chose. I love your hair by the way.”

No slave? Am I free?

“No slaves? But why did he buy me then?”, the young female muttered more to herself than anything else.

“He probably saw something in you that made him do that. He is a good man and he knows how- well, he should tell you himself. If you are ready, I can help you with your feet and then show you around the grounds. This is a huge estate and one can easily get lost if you don’t know where you are going.”

“Thank you.”

“Not for that. I once was in your sandals and know how you must feel like.”

Wearing a light greenish tunic and with dressings on her feet, (y/n) followed Wanda through the hallways and another smaller atrium, out on a terrace that overlook the vast gardens and fields.

“Everything you see belongs to the domini. There are stables down that path, as well as a pond and some fruit-trees.”

One more hour they walked through lush grass and over soft grounds, before entering a pavilion that was seated at the back of the large villa, where almost a dozen people were sitting. Two of them the Domini and another one the young boy who immediately became flushed and looked away, earning himself raised eyebrows from some of the other people.

“He forgot the towels and ran into you in the bath, didn’t he?”, Wanda whispered only for her new friend to hear, who only nodded with a suppressed smile dancing on her lips.

“He will be apologising to you for weeks now. Poor boy. The others will make a bit of fun of him too. Did he run into the walls again?”

“Yes, even though I hadn’t even started with undressing yet.”

“At least he didn’t break his nose this time. He did when he accidentally ran into me. Sorry we are late, but I didn’t keep in mind that she isn’t as fast normally with her injured feet. I hope you hadn’t had to wait too long.”, Wanda apologised while taking her seat and motioning for (y/n) to take a seat beside her. What she did.

“So, (y/n). How do you like it here?”, the man she had learned was called Steve asked, with a generous smile on his face, “I hope your room and the clothes are to you liking. You were a surprise.”

The last part was added by a pointed look (or glare?) at his friend, Dominus Bucky.

“I already told you I am not sorry! You weren’t there.”, the other one sighted, with a glare on his own, “Now can we eat? I am sorry for making you walk all the way though, I didn’t realize you were barefoot. I should have carried you part of the way.”

Is – is he apologising to me?

“I- its okay. Injured feet are nothing to – to – to was about to. To my other – Thank you.”, the young female stuttered, the memories about her fate resurfacing after being almost forgotten, “but –“

“You are wondering what you are doing here and why you are not treated as a slave, am I right?”, the blond Dominus concluded.

“Yes.”, she whispered.

“Because you are no slave. No one here is. Every single one of the people you see at this table is a free person.”, he said.

“I once was a slave as well. Before that, I was a soldier, with Steve, but got captured and sold into slavery as a gladiator. No matter that I was a roman citizen- even though it wasn’t allowed. I was made to fight and kill. One day Steve found and freed me.  They made me wear an helmet and a Manicae, with only a short sword as my weapon.*I know how it is to be on that side of society. You are free now. Free to make your own choices. And if you want to stay, stay. If not, that is fine as well- you don’t own us anything. But enough of this. Now it is time to eat, and to tell why Peter isn’t able to look up from his plate.”, her saviour explained and she finally understood- at least it became clearer to her.

Call for an Intergalactic Week on the ZAD (Aug. 27-Sept. 2, 2018)

After the long awaited victory against the airport project, we are trying to lift ourselves out of the brutal spring, a season marked by two phases of evictions in which the government made sure to avenge the affront that the ZAD had represented for so many years. The massive police operations caused many injuries, the destruction of a part of the living spaces of the ZAD, and a long military presence. But the state was forced to give up going any further and entirely eradicating our presence in this bocage. Resistance on the ground, solidarity elsewhere, and the negotiation process resulted in a status quo that safeguarded dozens of homes, common spaces and activities on most of the land held by the movement. Nevertheless, what we managed to preserve today could very quickly be attacked again, administratively, politically or militarily. Whilst the ZAD recovers from its wounds and recomposes itself, the work in the fields and the constructions resumes, as we project ourselves towards the struggles of the next months. These however go beyond just us, and connect up with others around the world. They concern the collective and respectful use of the land, the sharing of the commons, the questioning of nation-states and borders, the reappropriation of our habitats, the possibility of a way of producing and exchanging that is free from the shackles of the market, of forms of self-organization on territories in resistance, and the right to live there freely...

Following more than two years of regular building work and a new month of construction this summer, this week of August 27 to September 2, will also be the inauguration of the Ambazada, a space intended to welcome rebels and struggles from around the world to the ZAD of Notre-Dame-des-Landes. To honor and celebrate the opening of the Ambazada the obvious thing to do was to make a call for a new intergalactic week. We hope that it helps to bring back momentum and horizons before the autumn mobilizations at home and abroad.

Open encounters between autonomous territories in struggle There are questions that have not ceased to inhabit us during this past season on the ZAD. These include: How to throw  the anchor down for the long term, without becoming domesticated? To be community-centered, or more porous in our movements? How to deal with the power struggles and frontal relationships with the state, and move toward possibilities of victories that can last? We had to find our own partial answers during the recent emergency, to make decisive choices against the tanks and under dramatic pressure. We want to re-open questions around these issues, and to share them with other territories born out of battles and that have traced their own path. Part of the week will be devoted to open encounters with guests from the Wendland in Germany, Christiania in Denmark, the free district of Lentillères in France, Errekaleor in the Basque Country and perhaps Exarchia in Greece. Each of these territories will tell us the way in which they handled these issues, followed by a debate between all of us. At another scale, there are people resisting cultural assimilation and liberal ideology all over the place. We’d like to take a moment during the week of  meetings to discuss this subject as well.

Historical junctures and revolutionary legacies We would also suggest that during certain evenings we time travel across decades of important struggles in different European countries. Revolutionary Italy in the 1970s, the German autonomous movements of the 1980s or the radical anti-capitalist ecology of the UK in the 1990s, among others, all of which reconfigured our political language, actions and organizational practices. We’ll dive back into these vibrant stories, in search of the legacies and imaginaries  they offer us, as a way of thinking through our present.

Other workshops and simultaneous meetings  A lot of other content is still being put together, including: - an afternoon meeting with a Kurdish activist around the women's liberation movement in Kurdistan, and its role in society and the movement. - A presentation on the political, social and struggles situation in Mexico following the presidential elections in July and the campaign of indigenous candidate Marichuy. - Testimonies of undocumented people in Nantes and groups who organize their support in squats and in their administrative procedures. An update on the asylum-immigration law. The feedback from a group that organized the occupation of the University of Nantes this winter with undocumented people and an overview of the current situation. Participants are welcome to offer contributions to the announced discussions. You can contact us to make additional proposals for workshops and discussions. However, we have made the overall choice to favor a few major themes and common moments in which to advance together, rather than to superimpose a multiplicity of parallel discussions. - We are thinking of organising another gathering in parallel at another site of the ZAD, with groups of trade unionists and students who will dedicate certain days of the week to taking stock of their mobilizations of the past year and looking to the future. We envisage a cross pollination between those attending this and the intergalactic week.

The mornings will be devoted to building work on various sites, to strengthening the ZAD's commons, as well as to running the logistics of the camp. 

Let us know you’re coming, and let’s organize it! Tell us if you want to come!! We need to plan the logistics in advance, and therefore to get a sense of the number of participants (we have provided infrastructure for about 300 people during the week). We hope that the participants will stay the entire week, and to take the time to develop a  collective sensibility with one another. Please let us know by July the 31st, how many of you will be present, and on which dates. Canteen facilities will be organized on site, but do not forget to bring a tent and sleeping bag. Also tell us what language(s) you speak, so we can better organize translation.

We camped in a small clearing at the top of the mountain we had trudged up with our heavy packs. It was just on dusk, so after absorbing the panoramic view we set up camp in the dark, alone with the stars and the small creatures of the night.

The next morning the sunrise was glorious – we felt like lonely kings on top of the world. We ate breakfast, packed up the tent, and started our hike down the other side of the mountain. Within minutes our serenity was shattered. A four-wheel-drive stuffed with parents and noisy kids growled its way up the side of the mountain on a dirt track we didn’t know was there.

Reminiscing over this trip gets me thinking about how my camping style has changed over the years. From carrying everything I need in a pack on my back to camping out of a 4WD, my style has necessarily evolved over time. (Check out how our very own Ben Collaton’s kit has evolved over time too.) I still want to go to the same places but look for comfort when I get there.

Comfort to me means less effort in setting up camp and a comfy bed to sleep in at night. So, for me, as my body degrades with age, that means a camper trailer.

Camper trailers aren’t as bulky as they seem. Here, the Oztrail Camper 7 has as big a footprint as a similar sized touring tent. 

What I wanted from my set up

I wanted an uncomplicated rig that could be set up easily, had as small a footprint as was feasible, was lightweight for comfortable towing, and capable of being expanded on in the future. Lightweight in camper trailers means a soft floor so that narrowed my choices a bit.

I planned on spending weeks at a time in my camper trailer so ‘liveability’ was a priority. I’m not going to attempt to define livability but I am content to say my wife and I wish to stay married! It had to have ample space to keep us both comfortable and from living on top of each other.

And, after much consideration, I chose an Oztrail Camper 7. Let me tell you a bit about it and highlight some things you should consider when buying your camper trailer.

Bed

In my Camper 7 I have a double size bed but it seems larger than is standard – it’s 195cm long instead of 178cm and 143cm wide instead of your usual 138cm. A little extra room in bed is always a good thing.

Most campers come with an open-cell foam mattress. I have augmented ours with a ‘waffle top’ for added comfort. You could do this or add a really comfy self-inflating style mat, like a .

Space

My tent has a floor area of 2×2.6m which is not huge but is a decent size for two people with a small table and two chairs. The area under the awning is a good, usable size at 2.5×3.1m. With detachable walls and floor, it seems as large as a circus tent!

Inside the Camper 7. The author even carries a small step ladder to make getting in and out of bed easy.

Many camper trailers allow you to add on rooms. If your family is growing check to see whether the camper you have your eye on will accommodate this.

Trailer

I didn’t want a full off-road trailer. I’m not into rock-hopping, chassis-twisting activities. I’m more of a ‘rough track’ explorer so I settled for a trailer with sound construction that could be easily improved.

I have strengthened the springs and replaced the slipper system with a rear shackle. It’s been raised an inch and I replaced the ball coupling with a TREG hitch. The power cables have been led inside the frame from underneath and I have installed a stone guard. I did this all myself for a shade under $500. The trailer already had carriers for a spare water jerry can, gas bottle, and tool box.

Whether you buy an all-in-one camper trailer as I did, or buy the tent and trailer separately, keep in mind you can do a lot of these alternations yourself. This will save you a lot of money rather than buying a more expensive rig.

Lighting

Some camper trailers come with inbuilt lighting, some don’t. Mine didn’t. My wife and I embrace the KIS – Keep It Simple motto when it comes to camping anyway. I have both an old gas light and a pressure lantern.  The lantern gives a warm, welcoming, comfortable light that is perfect for reading under or playing cards. The lantern is so bright you could see it from the moon. Add a headlamp each and we’re happy. Perhaps I’ll add LED lights and a battery coupled into the car’s charging system (three batteries to charge then) but that’s an option for down the track.

The great thing about a lighting set-up like this is that it isn’t tied to your camper. You can use the same lights in a blackout at home (yep, I live in SA so know all about those), camping in a tent, or for that backyard barbeque.

Kitchen

A lot of camper trailers feature kitchens as their major selling point and some have brilliant configurations. I opted for a trailer without the proverbial kitchen sink! If I want to, I can add one later.

I have a permanent kitchen set-up in the back of my LandCruiser which means I can take off at short notice with a tent on my own or hook up the camper trailer. The kitchen is always ready to go, just add water.

Speaking of water, I carry four 20L jerry cans on the car and trailer depending on the trip. I’m thinking of fitting a tank to the trailer but I’m not sure about the placement underneath – I’m worried about weight distribution, stone damage, and accessibility.

How do you decide which camper trailer is right for you?

It’s amazing how many varieties of camper trailers there is on the market. At one end there’s the Taj Mahals that have slide-out kitchens with sinks, stoves, fridges, and pantries with the obligatory recipe book. Instant hot water showers that drain the gas bottle and water tank (see my previous blog on showering when camping), flick a switch or turn a handle and it sets itself up, automatic TV aerials – why leave home at all?

At the other end, there’s the basic trailer with a tent that’s even simpler than ours. The determining factors when buying a new camper trailer will generally be money, weight, what sort of car you’re going to tow with, where you’re going to tow it, and how comfortable you want to be when you get there.

For us, the enjoyment of camping is not having to worry about all the technology at home – apart from, maybe, lighting and refrigeration. It’s about improvising and doing more with less. Remember my motto from before – KIS. The simpler your set-up, the less there is to stress about.

Padlocks - A Full Guide to the Different Types, Their Uses and Security Ratings

The different parts of a padlock

With countless different styles, sizes and applications of padlock available it may surprise you to know that the basic principles of their function and design are all pretty much the same.

Although the bodies of certain types of padlocks (some disc or combination padlocks, for example) are made from alternative materials, the majority of padlocks have a solid metal body. The solid padlock body is by far the strongest part of the padlock and, as a general rule, the larger the body the larger and more substantial the locking mechanism can be.

The U-shaped metal bar that exits and re-enters the padlock body is called the shackle or shank. Whilst the body of the padlock is relatively well protected this part of the lock is exposed and therefore most vulnerable to attack. As with increasing the size of the body, incorporating a more substantial shackle into a design a considerably more secure padlock can be produced. Whilst most padlocks use a spring-loaded shackle mechanism, certain others incorporate a manually released shackle.

Now for the business end of the padlock, the locking mechanism and key-way. Usually made up of between 3 and 7 tiny spring loaded pins, the unique key entering the padlock’s barrel causes these pins to be precisely aligned, in turn allowing the barrel to rotate, releasing the shackle.

As previously mentioned, most padlocks follow roughly the same principles of design. Having said that, certain other products do have slightly different properties. Continue reading this document explaining the different designs and merits of each.

Types of padlocks

There are countless designs of padlocks on the market and many of them can be found on this site. Each of these padlocks has unique and interesting features that set it aside from all others in terms of design, convenience and security.

The Closed Shackle Padlock

An increasingly common design of padlock on the market, the name ‘closed shackle’ padlock simply implies that the normally vulnerable shackle has been protected in some way. In doing so the manufacturer has made it considerably more difficult to defeat these padlocks with either bolt cutters or a saw. Crucially, many insurance companies demand the use of such closed-shackle padlocks as an absolute minimum security measure.

It is worth noting, however, that in protecting the shackle in such a way it can frequently reduce the flexibility and ‘usable clearance’ of the padlock. By ‘usable clearance’ we mean the area between the shackles that allows us to pass them through a hasp or hole, around a bar or, indeed, onto a cable. As a result it is vitally important that you check not only your own requirements but also the exact dimensions on our website prior to making your purchase.

The Straight Shackle Padlock

Another commonly used design is the ‘straight shackle’ padlock, otherwise referred to as shutter padlocks because of their common application for securing roller-shutter doors, something for which they are perfectly suited.

It is wrong to assume that this is their only purpose, however. Indeed, the straight shackle padlock is an incredibly versatile product having a wide variety of uses – from securing warehouse doors to shipping containers – due to their design and the levels of both security and convenience that this results in.

The Discus or Round Padlock

Frequently referred to in the industry as a ‘closed shackle padlock’, the term refers to the long, curved shackle that wraps securely around the entire body of the lock. This precise feature is exactly what makes the discus, circular or round shackle padlock pictured here so resistant to attacks from tools such as bolt cutters.

That said, whilst more conventional padlock designs incorporate a solid body, this type of lock has a circular shackle enclosed between two metal cases that combine to produce a disc, the keyway being placed directly in the middle of one disc. Due these locks’ non-spring-loaded nature, they are relatively safe from drilling or other excessive force and will most often remain firmly locked.

It is worth bearing in mind that these discus padlocks were originally intended to be used in conjunction with a staple and hasp, thereby covering the albeit small part of the shackle that would have been otherwise exposed. Clearly this makes it even more difficult to be cut, hammered, sawn or bolt cropped.

WARNING: In recent times many budget padlock manufacturers have released products that have sullied the reputation of those high-quality locks that have become known for their high levels of security. Indeed, a number of these cheaper, flimsier locks can be defeated simply by hammering on the join between the halves of the circular body. Unfortunately this has become a fact widely known amongst the criminal fraternity who use this technique regularly to smash the lock and expose the mechanism inside.

It is worth noting that this site only sells high quality locks such as the ‘ABUS Diskus’ range that are not susceptible to such attacks. This lock and those from other premium brands incorporate a disc of hardened steel within the case that stops the body of the padlock from being smashed. As a result the ‘ABUS’ range of disc padlocks sold on this site are the leading discus padlocks on sale today.

Long Shackle Padlocks

Simply a traditionally designed, solid bodied padlock with a longer, extended shackle, this feature adds an element of convenience by increasing the locking area and thereby the number of potential applications. This added convenience can lead to a corresponding reduction in the lock’s security rating. Quite simply, because of the exposure of the shackle the lock is more susceptible to attacks by bolts cutters and saws.

Combination or Coded Padlocks

We are frequently asked if combination padlocks are as secure as keyed padlocks. Quite simply the answer is no. Due to the very nature of a combination mechanism, such padlocks can never be as strong as a decent keyed equivalent. Also, whilst a relatively unlikely occurrence, a combination can always be cracked over time simply by trying out each possible combination of numbers one after another. As a rule a 3-dialled lock with 10 numbers per dial can be opened within 40 minutes with a 4-dialled lock taking somewhat longer in 4-5 hours.

As a result, insurance companies will rarely cover your property or possessions when they are protected by a combination padlock. That is not to say, however, that these locks are not a hugely useful tool in the right circumstances. One obvious advantage is seen when a number of users need access to a single place with another benefit arising from eliminating the need to carry a key around at all times.

A further convenient security factor is afforded by being able to reset and change the combination of the padlock at any time – whilst unlocked of course. That said, there have been occasions when a single malicious and yet authorised user has reset the code to suit their own ends. To combat this issue a number of manufactures have introduced a feature that prevents the combination from being reset without a key.

Weather Proof Padlocks

A completely weatherproof padlock – frequently known as the ‘marine’ padlock due to their suitability for salty and other extreme environments – is a lock that consists of 100% stainless steel and non-corrosive materials. With many padlocks being constructed from more vulnerable materials, the obvious weak link across nearly all padlock types is the internal mechanism, a series of tiny springs and pins that, when rusted, will stop the lock from operating correctly and ultimately stop the lock from functioning at all.

That is not to say that many ‘non-marine’ padlocks are not ideally suited to outside use due to the fact that many high-quality locks have been developed using non-corroding materials. A prime example of this would be the range of ABUS padlocks sold here on this site, a series of padlocks constructed using only the best quality of marine grade materials.

The Choice Between Weatherproof and Security

Why would you choose a standard, more traditional padlock if a marine padlock is so very secure? Put simply, completely non-corroding materials such as those used in the manufacture of marine padlocks are softer than those used for conventional locks. As a result the shackles of these locks can be cut, sawn through or bolt cropped more easily. It is vital that you consider this factor very carefully before you choose which padlock to use.

Whilst the exposed shackle may discolour over time, the conventional type of padlock would generally be a better option for normal outdoor use. Whilst this discolouration may worry some customers it is nothing to worry about as the corrosion they see will not affect the functionality of their lock.

As with most things in life, however, there are exceptions to this rule. The ABUS Granit series padlocks found on this site are actually manufactured using fully marine-grade materials, are cataphorically coated and therefore able to cope with incredibly extreme environments for over 80 years.

All things considered, however, if you are planning on leaving your lock unattended for long periods of time, by the sea, on a boat or in areas with extreme environments we would always recommend you use a fully marine-grade padlock. To make it easy to find locks like these on our site, any padlock with the ‘raindrop’ icon is classed as fully weatherproof.

Some types of padlocks offer even greater levels of protection by including an external protective plastic jacket and a shielded keyway. You will find that this specific type of padlock is frequently marine grade or ‘weatherproof’ and present a suitable option for those wishing to guard their lock from moisture be it from precipitation or other elements.

Insurance Rated Padlocks

More and more often insurance companies are requiring policy holders to install specific types of padlocks, often ones with minimum security ratings. Whilst this will depend upon your individual insurance firm the majority of them will adhere to a similar set of basic requirements, most insisting that the insured used a ‘closed shackle’, keyed design rather than a more traditional or combination style.

Quite often, however, underwriters will insist on padlocks that are towards the higher end of the industry standard for European padlock testing – the CEN grade. Whilst Level 6 padlocks frequently cost in excess of £100, they are easily the most secure padlocks on sale in the UK today.

The grading process undertaken by CEN is intended to effectively simulate a determined attack upon the padlock. Environmental effects and manipulation by humans are not included in these tests:

GRADE 6 – Maximum Security

GRADE 5 – Extra High Security

GRADE 4 – High Security

GRADE 3 – Medium Security

GRADE 2 – Standard Security

GRADE 1 – Low Security

Frequently criticised, this grading system is arguably rather flawed due to the fact that a padlock need only fail one of the test criteria to be awarded its lowest grade. One example of how this can affect an otherwise excellent, high security padlock is where the said lock may pass all tests with flying colours but may fail at minus 40 degrees centigrade, a temperature that would never be reached in most areas of the world.

Despite its flaws it is still a much more useful system of classification than simply defining a lock as ‘closed shackle’ as required by many insurance underwriters. Nothing But Padlocks stock a number of open-shackle padlocks that are 2 levels higher in the European CEN scheme than some of our (traditionally more secure) closed-shackle locks.

If you find yourself with this problem and discover that a closed-shackle padlock just won’t work, why not consult your insurance company and they will provide you with the relevant BS EM or CEN grading.

Can A Padlocks Be Picked?

It is an inescapable fact that any padlock can be picked by a true expert. Some padlocks, however, are more easily picked than others. Reassuringly though, even the greatest locksmiths can spend hours picking the cream of the modern padlocks.

The workings of a padlock are not as simple as many would imagine. Inside is a series of spring-loaded pins of varying lengths which are aligned as the notches cut into the key move over them. It is technically possible to adjust these pins (using specialised lock picking tools) into such a position that the padlock will open.

Unfortunately, due to their smaller dimensions and the correspondingly smaller number of pins, smaller padlocks are usually easier to pick. As a general example, a 50mm lock could contact around 4-7 locking pins whilst a smaller, 30mm device would only use 3-4.

This is not to say that smaller padlocks will not be particular secure, not at all. Knowing the limitations of their locks all too well, the premium manufacturers of padlocks have come up with a number of devices that help prevent manipulation by outside elements – commonly known as criminals. Split pins with mushroom-shaped heads, guarded keyways and completely ‘pinless’ locking mechanisms are just a few of those anti-manipulation devices that now mean any high-quality padlocks, regardless of size, will be resistant to almost any thief or lock-picker.

However, when it comes to securing truly valuable items it is always worth going for the very best, something that will defeat even the most experienced lock smiths around. Both ABUS and Abloy, for example, have devised ingenious padlock lock cylinders for the padlocks that now use rotating discs instead of pins. Those very ABUS padlocks are available on this site and are referred to as the ‘Granit Plus’ range. With these discs rotating around 360 degrees, compromising such a padlock is near impossible. Furthermore, a malicious keyholder can’t simply get another key cut to further their own ends. These padlocks come with a unique code card that must be presented to an authorised locksmith before another key can be cut.

Keyed Alike and Master Key Padlocks

Whilst the majority of padlocks can only be opened by a single key it is frequently useful to have a number of padlocks that can be unlocked by a single master key.

At manufacture most padlocks are what the industry refer to as ‘Keyed Different’ meaning that the locking mechanism of each lock produced by that manufacturer is chosen at random. Usually this translates to 2 out of approximately 500 locks working with the same key. Clearly the number of duplicates will fall along with the number of locking pins used in the lock, i.e. if the padlock in question is a smaller device with fewer locking pins there will probably be more duplicates in existence. The same applies to many budget padlocks where quality control and accuracy are more in question.

Keyed Alike

There is also another type of padlock, only marginally more expensive than keyed-different locks, called ‘keyed alike’. Due to their minimal price difference they have become incredibly popular purchases for the customer who needs one key that can open the same ‘suite’ of padlocks. The term ‘suite’ refers to a series of identical padlocks.

“Does this compromise security?”… a commonly asked question and one that makes a lot of sense considering that more people will have access to the keys. Quite simply the answer is yes, more people will have access to the key but, for many of our customers, that price is worth paying for the added convenience.

If this does concern you it is possible to reduce this risk by choosing a lock from one of the premium manufacturers. Most of these firms will have a number of key-sets available thereby reducing the level of risk to the security conscious customer. As a padlock specialist we take steps to further mitigate the risk inherent in keyed-alike padlocks by stocking a number of these key-sets and rotating them on a regular basis.

Master Key

For a compromise between ‘keyed-different’ and ‘keyed-alike’ padlocks there is always a third way – ‘Master-keyed’ padlocks. In this case each lock has its own key but is part of a larger group which can all be opened by one common key, or master. As long as the master key is kept tightly locked away the whole set should be perfectly secure.

Clearly with this increase in security comes an increase in cost if only because of their added complexity. When a combination of both convenience and security is essential the master-key setup is ideal.
