Vlad Jr. is finally in the majors, where he belongs

The long awaited arrival of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the major leagues has finally come, with the Blue Jays star and son of a Hall of Famer making his big league debut for Toronto on Friday night.

Still just a month after turning 20 years old, Guerrero played third base and batted fifth for Toronto against the A’s.

The consensus top prospect in baseball, Guerrero was very likely ready to test his mettle against major league competition and some point in 2018, but was kept in the minor leagues thanks to a systemic incentive to manipulate service time.

“Our vision, it really comes down to development,” Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins told MLB Network Radio in February. “I just don’t see him as a major league player.”

Just 25 games into the season, all of a sudden Guerrero is a major league player. How convenient the timing.

It was painfully obvious that Guerrero was going to be held down on the farm to start 2019 as well, at least until April 12. That’s the date after which there isn’t enough time left in the season to accrue the necessary 172 days for a full year of service time. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, players don’t qualify for free agency until they reach six years of service time. By gaming the system and waiting a few weeks, a potential star-type can effectively be in the majors for seven years instead of six before reaching the free market. For Guerrero, that means not reaching free agency until after the 2025 season instead of 2024.

It happened to Kris Bryant in 2015 with the Cubs, and again with Ronald Acuña Jr. in 2018 with the Braves. It would have happened with Guerrero this year too but an oblique injury during spring training took that decision out of the Blue Jays’ hands.

This trend might be corrected with the next CBA, but the current agreement runs through 2021. So for now we are stuck with a flawed system that rewards major league teams for not fielding their best rosters.

Major League Baseball has been running ads this season pleading to “Let the kids play,” yet until players like Guerrero, Acuña, Bryant and others are not artificially shackled, those words ring hollow.

In eight games in Buffalo this season, Guerrero was 11-for-30 with three home runs, hitting .367/.424/.700. It’s par for the course for the hitting savant, who hit .343/.416/.593 in 38 games at Triple-A and hit .331/.413/.531 overall in his four minor league seasons.

The bat is what sets Guerrero apart, and the hype surrounding his arrival in the majors has grown to the point where even his batting practices are must watch, even before his very first major league game.

Guerrero was called up on Friday, with infielder Richard Ureña optioned to Triple-A Buffalo to make room on the active roster as well as set Urena up as the answer to a trivia question decades from now. Guerrero wears No. 27, just like his father, who hit .318/.379/.553 with 449 home runs in a spectacular 16-year career that saw him make nine All-Star teams and win an MVP.

Millennial Women Are Poised To Be The Most Financially Independent Women In History

In late 2015, a new fashion trend hit: designer t-shirts emblazoned with the phrase “The Future Is Female.” The message was on point and women of all ages, especially those in their 20s and 30s embraced them.

It’s no surprise that these four words resonated with Millennial women. For the first time in decades, feminism is on the upswing. From career progression to child rearing, Millennial women are taking on the world. They are making themselves the new future.

But the phrase “The Future Is Female” is not a new expression. It was first coined over forty years ago in 1975. That Millennial women of today are claiming this 40-year old slogan is an interesting development. Today’s twenty and thirty-somethings are living in a completely different world relative to where women were financially in the mid-70s. In fact, today’s young women could become some of the most financially independent women in history.

“Millennial women have more freedom with their finances than past generations ever did,” says Misty Lynch, a John Hancock financial advisor consulting for Twine’s Savings and Investing app. “A married woman couldn’t even get her own credit card before 1975 without permission, and single women didn’t have it much easier when it came to financial independence.”

Clearly a lot has changed.

A Greater Opportunity For Independence

A look at recent data regarding Millennial women finds that they are enjoying opportunities unavailable to women before them. Pew Research has found that these women are more likely than men to have finished at least a bachelor’s degree by 7 percentage points. Further, 71% of Millennial women are in the workplace and they are marrying later versus previous generations as they focus on growing their careers.

All of this puts them in a different financial situation than previous generations. While the wind may be at their back, it is important that Millennial women have a clear understanding of what they need to do to maximize their financial lives, including taking their weaknesses head on.

Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, CFP, president of the Charles Schwab Foundation and SVP of Charles Schwab & Co, Inc., addresses the potential pitfalls. “Longevity plus wage and opportunity discrimination means these women need to work harder, save more and be in charge of their finances because financial independence isn’t just a matter of strength; it’s a matter of necessity” says Schwab-Pomerantz.

Financial independence is not a sudden result but rather a lifelong journey where certain decisions and behaviors propel the individual ahead. Understanding where Millennial women need to develop more skills will help them on this road.

Developing Goals And Being Fearless About Investing

John Hancock’s Twine Savings and Investing app recently studied the financial behavior of young women ages 19-36. Forty-five percent of women surveyed said that when they set a financial goal they are motivated to achieve it. Goal orientation is key in amassing wealth as financial independence is a slow progressive journey.

On the whole, Millennial women display high confidence in areas of budgeting and bill paying but at times demonstrate a lack of confidence versus their male peers in terms of investing. The most appropriate next step for these women is to use their money strengths to gain confidence in investing and putting their money to work for them.

Alison Norris, CFP and Advice Strategist at SoFi, agrees. “Instead of shying away from the topic with others, [Millennial women should] be confident discussing it at the dinner table with peers, asking their parents how they are paying for retirement, and initiating a salary conversation with their manager. When they open it up and start talking in a human way about money, the shackles fall off.”

This is even more imperative as Millennial women enter their prime child rearing years. Twine found that currently only one third of women in this group are investing outside of a 401(k). Without having clear financial goals, the disparity over a lifetime versus their male peers can cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Schwab-Pomerantz advises, “Always try to live below your means. Living below your means and saving the difference is key to achieving long-term goals. If helpful, view your money in terms of trade-offs.  If I buy X, what am I giving up? Does spending money in this way support my long-term goals?”

And this means Millennial women are going to have to move beyond one issue that came out of the Twine study: that you need at least a $1,000 to invest. With the advent of easy access to the markets at a low cost, these hurdles disappear.

Lynch concurs with this thinking. “This assumption creates a false sense of intimidation for first-time investors.  Even $10 or $20 can get you going.”

As a result, by living below their means, even if just a few dollars, Millennial women need to capture these funds and put them to work. The advent of investing and savings apps makes this even easier.

Financial Independence Is A Journey

As Chantel Bonneau, financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual and a Millennial herself, noted, “Finances are similar to fitness. Getting into your ideal shape doesn’t happen overnight. It is a process that requires, time, patience, and commitment. It’s also about moderation.”

Millennial women are poised to be the most financially independent generation in history. At the same time, “The Future Is Female” T-shirts continue to sell. While it might be a fun fashion trend, in terms of financial independence, Millennial women need to embrace the opportunities they have today to grow their wealth.

Does age really matter in whisky? Some more thoughts on the age-less bottle debate…

Every whisky writer, blogger, producer, drinker, consultant, marketeer and sales person has an opinion on whether whisky is better with or without an age statement on the bottle.

Now, last year I wrote about this and asked various questions around the subject and explained that my viewpoint is that by removing the shackles of having to design and formulate whisky to certain age statements, you actually unleash the creativity of a Master Blender or Master Distiller to create great liquids that could be a mix of young and old.

I wrote about this a couple of years ago here, if you're interested. 

But why do people get so hung up on age statements?What is it about whisky that means older Whiskies are better and younger ones are worse?Why is there such disdain in the whisky blogging community when a new limited edition NAS is released and priced above £50?

For me it is a bit of a shame that whisky producers are instantly given a load of grief when a bottle such as Laphroaig's Lore at £75 or Ardbeg's Dark Cove at £96 are released, to a chorus of '... Not another overpriced NAS...' and '... It's alright for the price, one of the better NAS releases this year...'.

Surely it should not be about the NAS-ness is the main response to a new release?

Recently I was fortunate enough to speak at length with Richard Pattersen on the subject whilst at The Dalmore distillery, and he made a superb point:

“None of my counterparts would ever release anything unless it was up to a very high standard, it just won’t happen, their reputation is always on the line. It takes time to bring whisky together in loving union but age is not the most important thing"

On a recent vineyard visit I started thinking about the NAS debate and how in wine it is perfectly acceptable to blend young and old to create interesting expressions without compromising on quality and without being labelled 'alright... for an NAS wine'.

When speaking with a winemaker in Carcassone, southern France, he explained that young vines and old vines create a healthy mix of flavours, leading to a solid product.

Specifically, the younger vines gave him more spritely, uninhibited flavour profiles, where the old were used for fruitier notes in the end product, and that was the established way of doing things; to blend wines together to create perfect favours.

Another analogy we could use here is that both winemakers and Master Blenders / Distillers are like painters - the person has all the colours on their board to mix together and create different hues and colour depths and whatnot then choose the best ones to create a perfect picture.

Mixing, matching, choosing high notes, low notes, but all with the vision in their mind about what they want the end image to be, showcasing the dexterity of their talent and, in whisky's case, the distillery's character; not creating something that meets the requirements to stamp a number on it.

When speaking with Richard Paterson on this subject, he passionately answered my question thus:

"All my counterparts would never release anything unless it was up to a very high standard, it just won’t happen, their reputation is always on the line. It takes time to bring whisky together in loving union but age is not the most important thing."

For example; The Dalmore's 25 Year Old single malt, a divine whisky, has only 1% 25 Year Old whisky in there, the rest is made up of much more aged liquids. You don't get to know the full composition unless you ask a few questions and have access to certain people but it is interesting once you know that the age is clearly important for this release as it is one of their marquee expressions but that the number is effectively second vs. the liquid quality itself.

This debate will roll on, and several brand teams I’ve spoken to don’t understand the negativity.

Interestingly, new-to-market whisky consumers will be decreasingly reliant on age statements on bottles to navigate the whisky category.

It’s common sense; waiting for every malt’s coming of age party before it can be bottled puts limitations on proceedings. There are only so many times 21 years come to pass, usually once every couple of decades or so.

It’s not really that we’re running out, more that we have to be willing to be patient, because no one could have predicted this level of demand 20 years ago. But yes, there is a lack of mature stock, and that has prompted the NAS trend.

Of course there are some cases, such as the Rosebank Distillery in the Scottish Lowlands, where production has closed down and we’re feasting on the last of the nectar as it comes to maturation. But there are also new distilleries hoping to begin production, such as Shetland’s Blackwood Distillery in Scotland.

[toggler title="Why did they start producing NAS?" ]

In addition to the lack of mature stock and closing distilleries, NAS has arguably come to pass in an attempt to make Whisky production more creative and shift the ‘focus’ from age to other aspects.

However, there are financial motives, because this is planet Earth. Every year that stock matures, 2% of the liquid a year evaporates, known as the angel’s share. Sharing with the angels is expensive, and the younger the Whisky, the more we can ensure the angel’s don’t take their milkshake from our yard.

If you don’t spot an age on the label, you’ve spotted an NAS Whisky. Hey presto, if only bringing yourself to drink one and escaping the stigma was that easy.

The spirits are usually given a clever, distracting name in place of their age. Classic offenders include things such as ‘Traditional Cask’ (it’s age-old tradition, the same, nothing to see here), ‘Four Wood’ (who cares about years when you can count trees?) or something flash and Gaelic like ‘Cairdeas’ (which could, in some fictitious realms, mean ‘really old’).

In NAS’ defence, their names generally denote their focus. So once you’re over the fact that you’re having an affair with a spring chicken, which generally people manage to do in life, you can enjoy finding out about this malt’s alternative forte.

Bank of Canada hikes rate as economy stays strong, trade uncertainty recedes

OTTAWA — The Bank of Canada hiked its trend-setting interest rate Wednesday as the resilient economy hums along and a big source of trade uncertainty is finally out of the way.

The central bank delivered a quarter-point rate increase for the fifth time since the summer of 2017 — and first time since July — to bring the benchmark to 1.75 per cent. The rate is now higher than it’s been in about a decade.

It was the central bank’s first policy decision since Canada agreed with the United States and Mexico earlier this month on an updated North American free trade deal.

“The new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will reduce trade policy uncertainty in North America, which has been an important curb on business confidence and investment,” the bank said in a statement Wednesday.

“The Canadian economy continues to operate close to its potential and the composition of growth is more balanced.”

The removal of one of the trade-uncertainty shackles also coincided with a notable change in the wording of the statement Wednesday, compared with the bank’s recent policy news releases.

This time around, the bank omitted the word “gradual” from its explanation on how it will approach future rate increases, a change that could lead some observers to anticipate future hikes will come faster than the market had previously expected.

Looking ahead, the bank indicated more increases will be needed to bring the rate to a “neutral stance” in order to keep inflation from rising too far above its ideal two per cent target. Governor Stephen Poloz’s team has pegged the neutral rate at between 2.5 and 3.5 per cent, so several more increases are likely on the way.

The statement, however, noted the pace of future increases will continue to be guided by how well households are digesting the higher interest rates, given their high levels of debt.

So far, the bank said Canadians have been making spending adjustments in response to earlier rate hikes and stricter mortgage policies — and credit growth continues to moderate.

“As a result, household vulnerabilities are edging lower in a number of respects, although they remain elevated,” the statement said.

The bank still expects consumer spending to continue expanding at a “healthy pace,” thanks in large part to the steady rise of incomes and high consumer confidence.

Until the hike Wednesday, the interest rate hadn’t been above 1.5 per cent since December 2008. At that time, during the financial crisis, the bank made a three-quarter-point cut to the benchmark, bringing it to 1.5 per cent from 2.25 per cent.

The bank left the rate unchanged in September and senior deputy governor Carolyn Wilkins later said the unknown consequences of the continental trade talks — as well as the tit-for-tat tariff dispute — were front and centre in the decision.

Following the USMCA agreement, the bank now expects lingering trade tensions — such as U.S. metals tariffs and Canada’s countermeasures — to lower business investment by just 0.7 per cent by the end of 2020, compared with the 1.4 per cent reduction it had predicted in July. Exports are now expected to take a negative hit of just 0.3 per cent compared to the previous prediction of a 0.7 per cent reduction.

The bank pointed to data that indicates the tariff quarrel has led to reductions in steel exports and imports, but have yet to show a notable impact on aluminum shipments.

The projections were laid out in the latest edition of bank’s quarterly monetary policy report, which was also released Wednesday.

The report predicted business investment — outside the oil and gas sector — will expand due to solid domestic and foreign demand.

It noted, however, Canada is still grappling with competitiveness challenges linked to major U.S. tax and regulatory changes as well as ongoing uncertainties around pipeline approval. The bank anticipates these factors will encourage some exporters to delay their investments or to make them outside Canada.

Exports are expected to continue growing at a moderate clip, the bank said, but they will face limitations from several factors — including transportation capacity constraints, global trade uncertainty and stiff competition, particularly from the U.S.

In a batch of updated economic forecasts, the bank predicted Canada’s real gross domestic product to expand 2.1 per cent in 2019, down from its July call of 2.2 per cent, and by 1.9 per cent in 2020. Its growth projection for this year has been increased slightly to 2.1 per cent, up from its previous prediction of two per cent.

Inflation, which reached 2.7 per cent in the third quarter of 2018, is expected to slide back close to two per cent by next spring as temporary effects from higher air fares, pricier gasoline and minimum wage hikes in some provinces fade away. The bank noted that core inflation readings, which omit more volatile items like pump prices, have stayed close to two per cent.

The report also noted that the economic activity generated by the recent legalization of recreational cannabis will likely have just a small impact on monetary policy decisions.
