Sprains and Strains? Benefits of K-Laser
I expect most of us have experienced sprains and strains of some kind in our lives, writes Reading Chiropractor Beccy Norman. We certainly know how painful, and sometimes debilitating, they can be. Sprains and strains stop us from getting on with our lives and prevent us doing activities we enjoy. A sprain is an injury to a ligament in the body. The most common areas are ankles, knees , shoulders and wrists. Sprains are mostly caused by unexpected stress put on a ligament. Poor stretching and warm up before exercise can increase the risk of this occurring. A ligament’s job is to support and stabilise a joint. Spraining a ligament results in pain, swelling , crepitus and loss of motion. If sprains are not treated correctly they can lead to long term chronic issues. Ligament sprains are graded due to severity. The grading depends on whether there is a partial or full tear within the ligament. Grading will help to distinguish the prognosis, a.k.a how long it will take you to recover. Check out our video about K-Laser therapy here: The K-Laser is a fantastic, state-of-the-art, piece of equipment that can accelerate the treatment of your
sprain / strain injury. Once your practitioner is happy that fracture has been ruled out (this can commonly be missed as they don’t always show up on x-rays when the injury is new) they can start using the K-Laser therapy as part of your treatment protocol. Laser therapy works by decreasing inflammation and speeding up the healing process. The K-Laser targets the damaged tissue with specific wavelengths of light to stimulate the cells in the tissue. The laser is painless and has no side effects when used to treat sprains. There is also great research demonstrating the benefits of laser therapy for the treatment of sprains and strains and other musculoskeletal conditions. The treatment has an accumulative effect. You can often see a quick improvement in the swelling, an increase in the range of motion and a reduction in pain. The K-Laser is also a great tool for the fact that it can reduce the risk of scar tissue formation following an Injury. All in all we recommend using the K-Laser as part of your sprain treatment. It can speed up healing and also ensure complete healing and reduce the risk of re-injury! Read the full article

Bruising - Strains and Sprains
Bruising - Strains and Sprains
Strains are reported to be minor injuries to the muscles and frequently occur in the thigh, calf, shoulder or groins and may result in soreness and stiffness. Sprains are said to be more serious than strains as they take longer to heal and are believed to be more subjected to pain. Sprains may result in damage to ligaments, muscles, and tendons. It is believed that strains and sprains are caused by physical stress to the muscles and different tissues, for instance, it might be due to lifting heavy objects or overstretching before exercise. It is reported that consuming the recommended daily amounts of Vitamin C and bioflavonoids may help decrease bruising. Bruising is believed to be easily treated by placing a small witch hazel onto the skin. Arnica is seen as very effective if the bruising had occurred in a horrific accident. Also, the herb horse chestnut has been stated to reduce bruising. Many individuals apply honey on wounds, as this has been reported to be an effective remedy. It has been recommended to use a hot compress or heating pad on the swelling section, as it may increase circulation. Burns Damages to the skin, burns are believed to be caused by wet or dry heat, chemicals, and electricity. Burns may be mild, moderate or severe. Mild burns are reported to occur on people that may be exposed to sunlight, as they only involve the outer layer of the skin. Severe burns are reported to affect all the skin layers. It is believed that they may need emergency treatment, such as skin grafting to reduce scarring and this may help in making a quick recovery. Burns tend to be stemmed by handling hot oil, hot foods or being overexposed to the sun. Electrical burns may arise due to contact with faulty wiring. The signs of mild burns may include tenderness, inflammation, and swelling. Symptoms for moderate burns might be pain, redness, blisters and also swelling. In order to treat burns, it has been recommended that one should drink plenty of fluids while the skin is healing. It has been advised to avoid exposing burnt skin to hot water or to the sun and to clean the burns frequently, by using sterile gauze dressings which are believed to maintain burns dry and protect the burns from dirt and bacteria. Supplements viewed as beneficial for treating burns - Aloe Vera gel is thought to be useful, as this is said to help in relieving pains, inflammation and help soothe the skin. - The herb GOTU KOLA is believed to be useful as it is thought to stimulate the growth of connective tissue in the skin. - Supplements of Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin E may be taken, as they work well when mixed together in strengthening the immune response and in repairing tissues and skin. - It has been stated that Calendula cream or goldenseal cream may be applied to the burns, as they are believed to feature infection-fighting properties.
