Sydney CBD North Shore Sports Podiatrist Says Shoe Selection Prevent Injuries
Choosing your shoes wisely
Probably the most popular form of footwear on the planet, sneakers have a long history. Did you know track and field star Jessie Owens wore Adidas when he won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics? Comfortable, versatile and trendy, running shoes have since become the go-to in casual footwear.
But with so many brands and styles competing for your sneaker spend, it can be a tough choice deciding which to buy. These days there are athletic shoes for every kind of sport, from tennis and hiking to basketball and trail running. And then there are some that simply aren’t intended for sports at all.
Podiatrists are reporting an increase in cases of people suffering various foot problems and injuries, as a result of wearing the wrong footwear for their chosen fitness activity. Choosing fashion over function and using casual sneakers for physical activity could see you suffering from ‘expensive sneaker disease’.
Sneakers with a low pitch increase pressure on the achilles and calf tendons. Wearing shoes with the wrong width (either too narrow or too wide) can cause corns, calluses and bunions. And unstable shoes with insufficient support can wreak havoc on your ankles, especially during activities that involve quick changes in direction.
RELATED: Foot Podiatrist from The Footwork Clinic in North Shore Sydney CBD Sports Clinic Waking Can Increase Your Lifespan
Australia’s leading Sports Podiatrist and Director of The Footwork Clinic, Mark Lin, recommends seeing a podiatrist before taking up a new sport, so as to get expert advice on the best type of shoes for your feet. “People’s feet are as individual as they are, and shoes that work for one may not work for another. Choosing the right shoes for the right activity is also very important, and good ankle support is crucial to avoid excessive stress and potential injuries.
Investing in the right shoes can save you costly injuries later on. A good athletic shoe should provide both ankle and arch support and have a wide toe box that bends upwards, to give your toes plenty of room to move around naturally. Undertaking sports on a regular basis in shoes intended as casual wear will result in pain and injury at some point, affect your performance, and potentially cause long-term damage to your feet.”
Hence the importance of choosing your shoes wisely based on the activities you plan to perform in them. Ultimately, you’ll be doing your feet and your wallet a huge favour by choosing the right shoes for the right purpose, rather than being won over by the latest style.
The Footwork Clinic is passionate about helping people improve and maintain their health, and share a philosophy that advocates special treatment of the feet due to their complexity. They believe that looking after the feet is the key to maintaining an active healthy lifestyle for as long as possible.

Sydney CBD North Shore Chatswood Sports Podiatrist Cures Ingrown Toenail Pain
The Footwork Clinic may well have a long-lasting, painless solution for patients suffering ingrown toenail pain with its revolutionary new treatment that has been recently introduced at its North Sydney and CBD Clinics.
The new treatment, using highly advanced “BS Brace” technology, is painfree, riskfree and non-invasive, explains leading Australian expert sports podiatrist and clinic director Dr Mark Lin.  It does not involve surgery or local anesthetics – so is ideal for a range of clients who have elected in the past not to have surgery for their ingrown-toenail conditions.
Tumblr media
The technology: “BS Brace” is the perfect solution to treat people who suffer from ingrown toenails, said Dr Lin.
“It is a game changer for those who do not want to have surgery or even for those who simply prefer not to get the nail(s) treated regularly.”
Nail Bracing is a unique ingrown toenail solution using a transparent toenail brace that gradually corrects unhealthy toenail curvature – the source of ingrown toenail pain.
RELATED: Sports Podiatrist from The Footwork Clinic in North Shore Sydney CBD Clinic Explains Lower Limb, Ankle Care, Foot Pain and Falls in Older Adults
With this method the treated nail is gently lifted out of the nail fold over time without pain .
It is a highly advanced and painless new technology and is very safe.
The painless BS Brace System of treatment for ingrown toenails treatment has in fact been used successfully worldwide for decades in more than 30 countries.
And now  it’s finally available at The Footwork Clinic in its Chatswood and Sydney CBD clinics.
“As part of our commitment to stay at the forefront of lower limb treatment, we are the first and only trained provider in Northern Sydney to offer this revolutionary treatment,” explained Dr Lin.
This is despite the technology having been first launched in Australia (registered with the  Therapeutic Goods Administration) four years ago and classified as a Class 1 Medical device in 2015.
The treatment method involves mounting a flat German made fiberglass brace to a curved ingrown toenail. The transparent nail brace creates a spring tension that lifts and holds the toenail out of the nail bed gently and continuously while the brace is attached. The nail and the nail bed get gently and effectively straightened by this process, explains Dr Lin.
“The basic principle is based on the same physical laws as that of a leaf spring, namely using pressure and counter pressure,”  he explained.
“It fits the shape of the nail automatically and the resulting resetting forces shape and flatten the nail when the nail brace is applied.”
Since its first use elsewhere in 1987 there have been no reported allergies, said Lin – including with repeated worldwide use in multiple countries.
“Our nail brace is absolutely safe and suitable for everyone, even those who have diabetes,” he said.
“The very advanced development technology and high safety system are the reasons why this treatment has been highly regarded around the world.
“This procedure does not require you to cut or hook any substance under the nail plate.
“This new technique is a painless and gentle procedure compared to using wire braces – the older technology involved wire being inserted under a nail and it caused extreme pain.”
One (or more) ingrown toenails can cause acute recurring pain and often require multiple visits to podiatrists for periodic ongoing treatment.
Ingrown toenail is very common and can happen to anyone at any age. It can result from footwear, lifestyle or  biomechanical factors such as flat feet and foot pronation — while for some people it’s simply due to genetics.
Tumblr media
While ingrown toenail surgery has to date had a high success rate for this painful condition – many sufferers choose not to have toenail surgery, owing to factors such as needle phobia, the period of time required to heal or to breastfeeding (and a subsequent choice not to use local anesthetics). For diabetics, the risk of infection is the main reason they don’t elect to have surgery.

“Our mission is to provide alternative treatment to people currently suffering from ingrown toenails as well as to millions who are susceptible to getting ingrown toenails,” said Lin.

Sports Podiatrist Sydney CBD Chatswood Cures Bunions
Compromising, Conspicuous and Common.
This noticeable foot condition affects up to 1 in 3 people, is visually evident and often very painful… What is this podiatric issue that leaves so many people with serious, ongoing pain, as well as the suffering of such a visible affliction?
Bunions.
A bunion is a mis-alignment of the joint of the big toe, where the first metatarsal (the inner bone) shifts inward, and the adjoining proximal phalange (the outer bone) moves in the opposite direction.
The visually prominent bulge or ‘bump’ is often mistaken to be an excess growth of bone, but the protrusion is actually due to the mis-alignment and gradual movement of these two bones in the big toe.
RELATED: Foot Podiatrist from The Footwork Clinic in North Shore Sydney CBD Sports Clinic Waking Can Increase Your Lifespan
Bunions can often carry along with them their own stereotypes.
Some assume that bunions only affect the elderly, remembering a menacing protrusion submerging from grandpa’s soft and unsuspecting slipper.
Others have assumed that they are a peril faced mainly by women, due to the choices of some to elect beauty over practicality, therein putting their foot-health in peril.
Perhaps there are some that relate the bunion to those in careers such as teaching or nursing, where the job demands long hours on their feet.
Or others still might assume that bunions are a repercussion faced by athletes, due to hard stops and extra stresses put on their feet through training and competition.
Elite athlete podiatrist Mark Lin says that “The truth is, bunions are a condition that could affect seemingly anybody. In some cases, children can be seen to be developing bunions, even before entering into high-school. While studies have shown that women and the elderly are more at risk of experiencing bunions, this condition still affects large numbers of the rest of the population. Even the demands on one’s feet, whether it be bustling between hospital rooms or sweating through interval training, is not a direct cause of a bunion condition.”
Most frequently, a bunion is a hereditary condition.
Lin explains that “the structure and shape of the foot are passed down genetically, and these factors play an important role in the probability of developing or not developing a bunion within one’s lifetime. Some foot types that are at increased risk of bunion development are feet with low arches, loose joints and tendons, or those with flat feet.”
While they are unlikely to cause a bunion independently, there are additional factors that can trigger or exacerbate any underlying bunion conditions.
Access to practical and functional shoe options can affect the experience of bunions, as “shoes that fit tightly to the foot, particularly around the front of the foot, heightens the likelihood of bunion development” advises Lin.
“We also do see many athletes, along with those in careers which require large amounts of time on their feet, experiencing bunions. The extra stress put on the foot from these activities makes the foot more susceptible to bunions, along with a variety of other foot injuries and conditions.”
RELATED: Chatswood Sydney CBD Sports Podiatry Recommends Heat And Ice For Foot And Leg Injuries
As with any foot-related health problems, prevention is always the best cure, “at The Footwork Clinic we can assess a patient’s susceptibility to bunion conditions, and develop tailored plans to each patient designed to lower their risk of bunion development, without limiting their activities or their overall life enjoyment.”
“We also work closely with many clients who have already begun to experience bunion conditions, helping to improve their toe alignment, alleviate and remedy the issue, while keeping them out of the surgery room and avoiding long surgery-recovery times.”

Sydney CBD Sports Podiatrist Northshore Chatswood Optimum Performance Specialist The Footwork Clinic
If everyday Australians valued and cared for their feet as much as they do their cars, it could lead to a transformation in general health, mobility and overall well-being, maintains leading sports podiatrist Mark Lin of Sydney — whose vision for a better Australia has folk keeping their feet clearly in their sights.
“I would like to change the way everyone thinks about the management of their feet,” explains Lin, who is Principal Sports Podiatrist and Director of The Footwork Clinic in Chatswood, Sydney.
“Feet are like the wheels of the car, if the wheels aren’t aligned properly, the car (the body) won’t take you very far,” says Lin.
“We only have one body to take care of in our life, one pair of feet. I want to help everyone to understand the importance of treasuring the body. We cannot replace our body like we replace our cars.” This, of course, includes our feet – so we need to cherish them if we are to reach dreamt of heights in athletic pursuits or personal bests in sports contests — or quite simply to accrue high life mileage or to contribute to maintaining personal independence in our lives as we age.
RELATED: Foot Podiatrist From Footwork Podiatry In North Shore Sydney CBD Sports Clinic Walking Can Increase Your Lifespan
And just as responsible car-owners are discerning in their choice of professional mechanics in order to improve/preserve their vehicle’s performance, so also should each of us be fastidious in selecting practitioners to tend to our bodily needs. In terms of our feet, this spells podiatrists.  This is where The Footwork Clinic has an upper-hand. Lin explains how The Footwork Clinic provides an optimum, professional service
“Conventional podiatry treatment is often focused on adjusting your orthotics and choosing your footwear options”, says Lin, explaining that this may offer a client some reprieve from pain, but is not a real correction of bodily dysfunction or underlying tissue damage.
“At The Footwork Clinic, we prioritise the correction and rehabilitation of the feet and legs in order to restore the body’s movement and function.” He says it is the combination of their revolutionary, multi-modal, evidence-based treatment modalities that sets this practice (and its practitioners) apart from others.
Practitioners at the Chatswood clinic believe the body has an incredible capacity to heal itself from injuries. So clients’ treatments often remain orthotic-free, pain-free and surgery-free, stemming from careful, professionally-applied “hands-on” manual therapies.
“Our unique hands-on treatment techniques help to provoke the body’s healing response and guide the body to recover better naturally — for a true corrective approach,” explains Lin.
He explains how chronic or recurring (negative) symptoms occur when there is an interference to the healing process from scar tissues, biomechanical stress, structural misalignment, active trigger point or repetitive strain. This is where this practice’s hands-on treatment techniques for clients help to eliminate this interference to (enable) healing.”
The Footwork Clinic thus works carefully to identify and professionally address root causes of the presenting problem (or pain) in order to create long-lasting results. This effectively optimises individual health, rather than just applying a “band-aid” approach to symptoms. The premium on corrective approach often also leads to provision of relief to the rest of the body – to parts that were being affected correspondingly – this being an added bonus for clients.
“Our latest evidence-based assessment system allows us to collect meaningful data that convert to an accurate treatment plan for each client.
“We objectively track the progression of an intervention and not just by subjective assessment and the level of pain,’ explains Lin.
“We do not just get rid of pain.  We help you to feel, move and perform your best!”
The practice specialises in foot mobilisation therapies and Trigenics and applies advanced manual therapies, with all practitioners trained in the techniques applied, including specialising in musculoskeletal conditions of the lower limb with a unique treatment approach. For instance, Lin said in treating heel pain the clinic is unique in applying advanced manual therapy skills with rehabilitative shockwave therapy -this being an example of a proven multimodal treatment approach.
Conditions typically presenting include spurs, heel pain, bunions, ankle problems or injuries, foot or ankle arthritis, nail issues and stiff or aching feet and legs. The clinic provides diagnosis and assessment followed by treatment and management of foot and/or leg pain and injury.
Lin explains how joint goals of treatment for The Footwork Clinic clients are to: Minimise recurrence of pain and injuries; Improve body function & optimise performance; and prevent and decelerate onset of degenerative changes.
“Our holistic and corrective care approach has had a proven track record of success in resolving acute and chronic conditions where others have failed,” he said.
RELATED: Leading Sydney CBD and North Shore Sports Podiatrist Explains Why Manual Therapy is the Preferred Alternative Treatment for Bunions
“We are dedicated to improving quality of life, and achieving people’s optimal well-being. Whether it is to get them back to their daily walks, or trying to run their first marathon, preventing degenerative foot issues, or improving sports performance — we are committed to helping through our dedication and advanced treatment methods. “

Trustworthy Podiatrist Chatswood Orthotic Therapy Solutions Foot Mobilisation
Orthotics vs Corrective Foot Care: A Podiatrist Shares the Facts
Those hoping that shoe inserts will correct foot problems are bound to be disappointed, but they do have a role in corrective foot care, says a Sydney podiatrist. As lead therapist in Chatswood, Sydney’s North Shore and Sydney CBD, Mark Lin has years of experience in corrective foot care programs, and he says that a multi-modal approach to treatment is likeliest to deliver permanent improvement.
Read: Chatswood Sydney Central Sports Podiatrist Feet Pain Treatment No Foot Orthotics
Orthotics Work for Short-Term Relief
Lin is no enemy of orthotics (custom-made insoles), in fact, his clinic uses the latest technology to create these foot supports. However, he warns that consumers should be cautious of claims that they will address the causes of foot problems when used on their own.
“When orthotics can help to take strain off the feet and lower limbs, it is certainly prescribed,” he says, “and relief from pain and tension does, to a certain extent, assist healing processes, but The Footwork Clinic advises its clients to undertake additional corrective foot care therapies for lasting, and even permanent results.”
“The problem with custom-made insoles is that they only work when you are wearing your shoes. Our combination of therapies aims to give people the ability to enjoy the freedom of bare feet and to discard their insoles once the root cause of foot-related discomfort has been addressed.”
Corrective Foot Care Can Eliminate the Need for Orthoses
While many podiatrists rely on orthotics and the adjustment of footwear, Mark Lin and his team work to do much more than simply offer pain relief. “Feet and ankles should be able to function without any help from supports. If they can’t, it is time to seek the real cause of the problem and address that,” says Lin. “The Footwork Clinic assesses patients to determine just why they are having issues, and the clinic recommends relevant treatments according to the findings.”
“These may include foot mobilisation techniques as well as high-tech interventions like Trigenics®, which assists with the neurological factors that could be aggravating symptoms and slowing recovery. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment program. The elements that are included will depend on the individual and his or her needs. Our interventions correct causes while relieving symptoms. Correction of the physiological causes of pain and injury offers long-term cures. Orthotics only help patients to achieve short-term relief.”
Read: Sports Podiatrist Chatswood Sydney CBD Feet and Lower Limb Pain Orthotic Therapy
Cure is Better than Relief and Prevention is Better Than Waiting for Pain
Lin notes that preventative foot care consultations can help his team to correct foot issues before they cause damage. “Unfortunately, while most people know they should consult a dentist before they have toothache, they aren’t as aware of their feet when it comes to prophylactic healthcare. By the time pain is experienced, the resulting damage can be very difficult to undo. The Footwork Clinic strongly recommends periodic assessment by a podiatrist. Consultations will be less frequent than dental visits – provided you have a clean bill of health. If we notice abnormalities that will lead to injury if left untreated, correcting them saves unnecessary pain and the possibility of long-term damage and reduced mobility.”

What does Podiatry Sydney deal with?
In athletes, the sports activities cause a lot of pressure as well as movement on their feet and thus Podiatry Sydney is something closely related to that. Even a small imbalance in their feet which is not so harmful or detectable under general circumstances make you vulnerable to injuries with additional stress of the sports activities. By releasing need for an individual’s muscles for compensating for the imperceptible imbalance, orthotics may help in reducing fatigue and promoting efficient muscle functioning for improving the performance. With sufficient functional correcting, structure of the feet may be aligned for giving more propulsion and making running, cycling and walking more efficient mechanically. The right kind of orthotic devices have been designed for controlling the foot function and could be made of firm fabric like carbon fibre or plastic. These type of orthotics are designed mainly for controlling the motion in 2 main foot joints that directly lie below the joint of the ankle. This kind of orthotic is mostly used for eliminating or enhancing pain in legs, lower back or thighs because of abnormal functioning of feet. How do orthotic devices help? The soft orthotic equipment helps in attenuating shock, improving balance and taking off the pressure from sore or the uncomfortable spots. They are usually made of compressible or soft material. This kind of orthotic is efficient for deformities or the condition of arthritis where a loss of the protective fat tissues happen on side of feet. They are even helpful with diabetes. The semi grid orthotic equipment is used commonly for treating the athletes. It permits for a dynamic balance of feet while taking part in sports or while running. By simply guiding the feet through proper functioning, it allows the tendons as well as the muscles to perform efficiently. It’s made of layer of soft material, reinforced with the rigid material. Calibrated orthotic equipment are the ones based on correction model as well as the technique of manufacturing which is advocated by MASS position. It mainly factors on the weight of the individual, flexibility of the foot and activity close to delivering custom calibrated without any distinction of the support which delivers firm yet comfortable functional power while also maintaining properties of the accommodative equipment. What should be done in case you think you should visit a podiatrist A lot of people keep suffering from symptoms like pain in the heel, pain in the foot, bunions, corns, etc. but do not visit a podiatrist. The cost is mostly covered by the health insurance agencies. You may consult your doctor for getting all the required information. Just spend some time and find out a good foot doctor who may be consulted for the same. Waiting for longer time may give rise to more severe conditions like Plantar Fasciitis Sydney CBD. Thus it is better to speak to a doctor in the early stages. You may look up the internet or take references from your colleagues, etc. for the same.

Importance of choosing Sports Podiatrist
In order to preserve the fitness of your feet, you should perform multiple workouts and stretches. You will find plenty of items on the market that can be used for the same purpose. If there is a serious concern with your foot, you may also refer to a decent podiatrist. As a matter of fact, it's even easier than self-treatment to get support from a Sports Podiatrist Sydney CBD. When to meet with the doctor? If you have a medical disorder, such as diabetes, referring to a doctor is a smart idea. Similarly, you can see a doctor if you have a heart condition. Here, it is important to remember that to cure any extreme foot issues, you can never use home remedies. You need to see a decent doctor instead for Shockwave Therapy Sydney CBD. When can a podiatrist be seen? In addition to these conditions, the decision to visit a Sports Podiatrist Sydney CBD often focuses on certain other considerations, such as the length of pain or irritation. You should know that you have a serious issue to contend with if you have extreme pain. We recommend that you visit a doctor in order to determine the exact source of the discomfort. If the discomfort doesn't go away after a few days, and, after addition to other symptoms, you still have pain, swelling, scratching and discoloration, we recommend that you call a decent podiatrist. Podiatrists are qualified if you don't know. They detect and treat foot-related disorders. The word "DPM," short for a doctor from podiatric medicine, appears next to their initials. Not all podiatrists handle problems with all types of feet. In fact, some doctors only treat sports injuries with Shockwave Therapy Sydney CBD. Choosing a doctor, how? Then, how can a Sports Podiatrist Sydney CBD be chosen? Well, you have to take into consideration all the variables you may have thought before hiring a good doctor before you hire the services of one. What you intend to do is speak to other people who have already used one of their facilities. You should ask important questions anytime you see the doctor before you are pleased. You should question him about his familiarity with hospitals and their affiliations. Ideally, in your field, we recommend that you select a board-certified specialist. You will want to go to a big hospital if you need Shockwave Therapy Sydney CBD. Helping Plantar Fasciitis with Shockwave Therapy? Plantar fasciitis causes heeling pain the most often. Plantar fascia is a large device, ligament-like, stretching from the heel to the base of the heels, serving as a dense rubber strap on the bottom arch of the foot. The plantar fascia will cause micro-trauma at its insertion in the heel bone or anywhere along its length with a few additional pounds on board or by exercises. This adds to discomfort that can at times be very intense. The disorder is most probable for women, excellent people, cyclists, and anyone whose work involves a lot of walking or standing on hard surfaces. Typically, it is most painful when a person takes the first steps in the morning after getting out of bed, but after sitting for a while or at the beginning of some operation, the pain can recur. The person simply cannot hold any weight on the foot in serious cases.

Sports Performance: Your Feet Could be Holding You Back, Says Sports Podiatrist
In competitive sports, there’s often a need for speed to match the dexterity with which athletes play the game of their choice. Running is all about speed. But although athletes acknowledge the need to run, they often prioritize footwear over feet. Sports podiatrist, Mark Lin, a Sydney-based podiatrist who specializes in sporting performance says that a professional gait analysis can work wonders in improving sports performance.
Being Proactive Means Consulting a Podiatrist
“Many sports-people recognize the importance of gait, but don’t consider the physiology that is causing gait issues – even if they recognize that there is some form of gait abnormality. They may think it’s a matter of training, or the shoes they wear, and in a sense it is. But if they don’t know where the underlying physiological weakness is, and how to address it, they won’t know how to correct the issue,” says Lin.
“Often, sports podiatry clients only make an appointment with a podiatrist after suffering repeated injuries or ongoing pain. They’re referred by a doctor or trainer who recognizes that there is a problem, but a podiatrist can identify gait issues before they cause injuries and downtime. The improvements brought about by podiatric interventions makes them more competitive because their feet and lower limbs work more efficiently, helping them to meet their goals on the track or field.”

Typical Performance-Boosting Sports Podiatry Interventions
When assessing athletes, Lin uses his years of specialized training and experience to determine whether foot and lower-limb-related issues could be slowing athletes down or making them more prone to downtime as a result of injuries.
“If there’s no problem, no treatment is prescribed. Sports podiatrists will only suggest interventions when they’re really necessary,” says Lin. “But if we identify biomechanical issues, there is no need for sports people to despair. On the contrary, they can look forward to improved performance following podiatric treatments.”
Typical interventions may include foot mobilisation techniques in which the podiatrist adjust the foot and ankle joints to help unlock their proper range of movement. This treatment is usually combined with simple exercises that can be done at home.
Like other podiatrists, Lin will consider footwear choices and the possible use of specialized orthotics or inner-sole supports. However, he emphasizes that orthotics is only the basic measure to relieve symptoms or just to accommodate the problem until the real problem can be corrected.

Trigenics® Revolutionises Sports Podiatry
Years of compensating for musculoskeletal issues will have retrained the nervous system. It begins sending the wrong signals to the muscles and retraining it to send the right ones needn’t be a lengthy or uncomfortable process. Lin is the first podiatrist in Australia to adopt Trigenics®, a functional muscle neurology technique, to correct foot and lower limb issues in athletes.
“Sometimes, the results are instantaneous,” he notes. “However, after The Footwork Clinic adopted Trigenics®, better outcomes are achieved and progress in correcting foot and leg-related issues has been faster with permanent improvements being attained within a shorter timespan. The results achieved at the clinic indicate the need for a wider adoption of Trigenics® in sports rehabilitation.
True to its name, Trigenics® involves a triple approach to musculoskeletal rehabilitation. It embraces exercise, biofeedback breeding, and muscle-nerve-sensor stimulation. “The client works with the therapist. It isn’t passive,” Lin explains.
Not Just for Sports
Sports podiatry is Lin’s specialty, but he points out that podiatry can help just about anyone. “If people have foot or lower limb issues, it will affect their mobility sooner or later. The techniques our Sydney podiatry practice implements can help anyone who needs it, and assessment is the first step. If you have a car, you’ll have it checked out on a regular basis even though nobody expects a car to last a lifetime. Your feet do need to last a lifetime, so being proactive about foot health isn’t just for those who love sport.”
