mmmmmm waffling on whether to start publically kvetching a bit on this phenomenon of this one aspect about TMNT that's in fanon mostly and seemingly happening more often in canon iterations

which is this insistence of like... positing Splinter as a father first and foremost. because dude originally wanted to mold himself some assassins to murk Shredder to avenge Yoshi. at most benign it's like the turtles calling Splinter whatever variation of 'father' over Master Splinter/Master.

hmm. idk overall... it's more of a nebulous feeling informed a bit by knowing canon lore across some iterations. but like it feels as if there's this push this urge to solidify the situation of the turtles and Splinter into a more recognizable, digestible and I'm waffling to use 'sanitized' version of a nuclear family.

for me TMNT has always been this pastiche of western and asian (pop) culture wherein the asian motifs and references are like a dash of wuxia here, a splash of 80s martial arts movies here, a touch of samurai jidai film there etc. and to me they're a family in so much as it'd be a familiar word you'd used to describe them for someone who isn't versed with the dynamics of master and disciples like you'd see in wuxia or other period martial art films. there's a closeness in martial brotherhood that's *like* a family dynamic but I don't think they're interchangeable.

but ultimately TMNT is still American and thus mostly western in maybe how it presents some things or conceptualizes it with an underlying theme still being parody.

Hang on i just remembered that one time when i was little when my mother told me that if i kept stealing bread out of the kitchen in secret it would be my fault if my dad died and my brain immediately went “splintercore” and i guess it kinda is. Unless I’m overreacting but this does feel kinda messed up to me. I’m processing. But it’s manageable if i imagine this conversation happening with everyone’s least favorite rat and raph.

Also while I’m here i keep seeing dead rats on the sidewalk whenever i wear one specific shirt out and about and i kid you not i go “splinter?” Every time. It’s cathartic.

fsdmafkadsf its fun having a shitty parent to assign to your own parent. i don't think that's overreacting, blaming your kid for someone else's potential death is a very splinter-core thing to say.

tbh i havent really succeeded in making a character thats awful the way my mom is. i always end up making them too dramatically and openly shitty for fun, while the way my mom works is that she's just generally subtly cruel and mean and dismissive in really damaging ways thats hard to explain.

so while splinter is in some ways like my mom he isn't enough like her for it to really stick in my mind. oh welllllllllll. im happy your havin fun with it.
