ORCZY'S FAN FICTION RECOMMENDATIONS

For following Fandoms: Varian and the 7 kingdoms, Lego monkie kid, JRWI riptide

Hi there! I tought I would share some of my favourite fanfictions I've read since April last year, as sort of a recap and also recommendations. These are all longer stories btw, ranging from 78K to 236K words. Hope you find something that piques your interest :D

If you have any other recommendations, PLEASE share them, I'd love to read more from these fandoms.

VAT7K

-Varian's Tangled Trials by IFoundYouJustineTime and TheArtistsMuse A complete Vat7k story adapting the original creators' plot points into an amazing, 24 chapters (episodes) long fic that reads like an actual cartoon. If you're new to Vat7k or Tangled The Series, or even if you haven't seen the latter (like me), you WILL enjoy this. If you like a fun adventure with a bunch of nerds as a found family, this is for you.

-What Summer Meant to You -If I Really Hated you (and I really, really do) both by Battybatzgirl First one's a battle of the bands/modern AU, second is an AU where the boys are rival engineers, both focusing on the ship Varigo. The writing style is what made me stay and read these to the end. Incredibly funny and entertaining to read, the way Varian and Hugo are characterised is just. So good. If you like a well written, lighthearted, romantic comedy, this is for you. (Both include some skippable adult scenes, but the story is much more about the romance)

-Making End's Meet by Meltthepoint As the author's name suggest, this is a melting point (Donella x Ulla) story, set in a modern setting. Donella enrolls Hugo into this new school, who then befriends Varian. Ulla and Donella meet again. This is about how two women make up and start anew after their lives went into directions they didn't want. The story is much more character focused, a really fun read. Very insightful about the women's characters. An exception, as I still haven't finished reading it. Definitely not the type of fic I can binge read, but I'm really enjoying it.

At the end of everything by Squirrelflight A Night in the woods AU (haven't played the game, you don't have to, to read it), and unfinished as of yet, but man. Worth checking out! Unlike the stories above, this one's definitely darker and has a really tense aura. Love it. The writing is so good it makes me so thrilled about what will happen next! I also really like, once again, the characterisation.

LMK

-You can stay here by KALL A pre canon story about how Pigsy and Tang adopt MK, how MK gets to be in a safe environment and starts figuring himself out. Great writing style, entertaining plot, what more could I ask for? (maybe an update lol) As of yet, unfinished, and hasn't been updated since late 2022. The author actually posted ( https://www.tumblr.com/its-kall-the-clown/735524530668371968/are-you-going-to-be-updating-any-fics-on-your-ao3 ) about wanting to rewrite the story sometime. Which is great! In case you're reading this, take as long as you want!

-A garden across our collarbone by PittedPeaches Spicynoodle soulmate AU where what you write, or in MK's case, draw on your skin, appears on the soulmate's skin as well. Red Son's journey of (very slowly, this is a slowburn) falling in love with MK. A lot of inner monologues, the story plays out more like a retelling of what happened from Red Son's perspective. Kind of like a diary entry and I LOVE IT. I actually didn't understand the pairing before reading this, nor was I that invested in Red Son's character. This fic changed everything. (it also sends you good luck if you read it on the train! I acquired: friends!)

RIPTIDE

-BREAKING FREE! by earlgray_milktea A fish 'n chips Highschool Musical AU (another thing I haven't seen, you don't need to, to read this). The writing is so undoubtedly Disney, it is at times so over the top dramatic, you can't help but smile at half the interactions. The charm is big on this one. The characters are exagerated but somehow not (completely) out of character. Basically if Riptide was on Disney, this is exactly how they'd act. Also it's just really, really cute.

-Depths of Natarus by goldpines Chip Mermaid AU set in an Undersa/Oversea war, focusing on Fish n Chips as well as Jay Ferin (my girl!). Two reasons why you should read this right now. First: the descriptions are SO detailed and immersive! It made me also kinda have a crush on Gillion Tidestrider. How. Second: it made me care about Jay. And the way she's written here is just so so great. You can tell the author knows what they're doing, the feels just keep coming, I alost teared up multiple times. This story makes you feel a lot of emotions at once, an overall amazing reading experience.

And these were my favs since last April. Specifically the ones that made me go absolutely insane. In a good way. Again, if you have any good recommendations (preferably longer stories, but shorter ones are also fine), please feel free to share them.

Goddamn i gotta get back on that AU

That's actually a very clever shorthand for the difference between 'the Son of the Monkey King' and 'The Monkie Kid' Anon hope you don't mind me using it!

Also since this is technically the first real THING i'm writing for this Au it got a lil crazy

It was.... weird... falling into this rhythm with Red Son.

Even he'd seemed surprised at how quickly he'd agreed to join their team while they were hunting down the weapon that could finally end the Lady Bone Demon. Sure he'd reasoned that he was doing it for the sake of his father, that their family had been taken advantage of by that demon, and this was little more than 'enemy of my enemy' but barely time at all had passed before he may as well have joined simply because he wanted to.

There weren't a lot of bunks on Sandy's Hovership, and at the start of all of this, everyone was so on edge (and in Monkey King's case injured) that it just made more sense to sleep whenever it struck rather than sort out bedroom options and who bunked with whom.

Which had lead to some interesting things so far, such as Monkey King tending to curl up against Tang as he was reading or something and taking a nap right there and how Tang seemed like... wayyy too comfortable with it despite how he'd first reacted to seeing him on New Years.

Pigsy was ALWAYS crabby in the mornings, but he was getting exponentially more frustrated after waking up for something or another he never seemed to be able to relay when he woke (probably some frustrating reoccurring dream that keeps blotting out when he wakes up, MK didn't remember his dreams much either so he could relate)

And about thee days in of Red Son working with them, he'd knocked out during some down time, and while he was sitting near him. The ship rumbled, Red Son hadn't woken, but he slid to the side until he was leaned against MK's shoulder. and... It was comfy. Red Son was warm, and soft.

And before he'd known it he was being startled awake by Xiaojiao making delighted cooing noises and the flash of her camera. And when he jostled Red Son woke up as well. He'd met his gaze for a second and his artist brain noted that his eyes were a rather lovely shade of amber, not even fiery orange or honey brown, but pure, precious stone amber.

and for a moment it had felt... nostalgic... in a way he couldn't place. and the puzzled look on Red Son's face mirrored his confusion at the sudden thought, before the demon slammed up the walls again and pushed MK away, face burning bright red.

But from there it had spiraled.

It was just so... easy? he supposed would be the word. It was almost startling how easy it was to fall into this rhythm with Red Son. Not a few months ago he was a nominal enemy, yet here they were finding themselves sitting next to eachother more often than not, sometimes close enough for shoulders to brush, their unconscious bodies rolling over at once to tangle together like it was the most natural thing in the world.

At one point they were facing a demon that had cast one of those 'greatest fear' spells over the lot of them, and before it had hit he'd felt Red Son slip his hand into his own with a small startled gasp. And before the world went black and he was covered by spiders and the looming specter of his own failures he'd squeezed back.

That had actually happened just hours ago, and MK's hand was still tingly. Everyone was a little shaken up from that one. (Monkey King had holed himself away in one of the few bedrooms there were and he sounded physically pained when MK had tried to check in on him and he'd answered that he'd rather be alone. he was pretty sure Tang was allowed in, and he tried not to take that personally. It was probably a whole 'Mentor doesn't want his student to see him freaked out' thing. If he didn't stop taking everything so damn personally he'd be a sucker for the next fear spell or whatever.) And unlike the others, Red Son didn't have any loved ones on this ship to help reassure him.

So... if their... something or another... that had been developing was gonna mean anything, that probably meant it should fall on him.

Red Son was where he'd expected him to be, half buried in engine guts in Sandy's work area, his hands were shaking and there was a far off look in his eye.

MK had to physically lift him and drag him away, and it was a lot harder without the Mystic Monkie Strength, but he managed.

in fact he'd gotten all the way to the kitchen area and Red Son had stopped struggling in his arms screeching to be let go (yet never trying to flare his fire and forcing MK to drop him) before his stamina gave out and he had to deposit Red Son in one of the chairs.

"Noodle boy i swear this truce will end in an INSTANT if you do not explain yourself-"

"You're freaking out."

"YES I AM! You would be too if your current ally just lifted you up from what you were doing and carried you to the deserted part of the ship because even the Pig is too on edge to be in here!"

"I mean from this afternoon. Red son, you've been pale as a sheet since we got out of there and your hands are STILL shaking." He watched as he hurriedly hid them in his pockets. "You need to talk to someone. And it may as well be me."

"I- I don't need to talk about ANYTHING! Presumptuous Noodle Boy... Bold of you to assume I'd just pour my heart out at some perceived internal detriment which you have no proof even exists!" The bluster and casual insults were considerably less convincing than they were when they were enemies...

...maybe he was just starting to see through them better.

Red Son pulled his hands back onto the table, as a sort of subtle show of how fine he totally was, and clenched his fists to keep them from continuing to shake.

"Red..." The nickname felt... natural. He couldn't quite explain why, but he supposed they'd been Something-or-Another-ing long enough to make it reasonable. Red Son's glare abated and was replaced quickly with a shocked expression. But he didn't shout to not be called something so short, so MK considered that a signal to continue. So he continued with what felt natural and placed a hand over his clenched fist.

The defensive anger was all but gone. And that puzzled, yet slightly awed look he kept sharing with Red Son during moments like these replaced it and those amber eyes darted down to their linked hands, as if he didn't quite know what to do next.

Eventually Red Son came to a decision, and MK let him fiddle around with his grip until their hands were linked properly. And it felt... it was that weird sense of nostalgia again. And as everything else neither of them could quite explain it felt right. familiar. Natural.

"It's not really worth talking about." Red Son responded after the moment passed. yet he didn't pull his hand away. "I know better than to believe what it had showed me."

"Red-"

"I mean, I SHOULD know better, right?" He looked away from MK then, but squeezed his hand a little tighter. "I mean- they're my parents. and they agreed me coming along with you all to take down the Lady Bone Demon was the best course of action. I know they wouldn't disown me because they believed I was becoming more aligned with you all than with the family. That just because we're friends doesn't mean I'm somehow betraying them!" Red Son was working through it in his head, and he didn't seem to really realize that he'd admitted to seeing MK as a friend, so he just squeezed his hand a little tighter and filed that away to celebrate later.

"It's irrational, and it's ridiculous that I actually feared the idea."

"It's not ridiculous, If you think it's irrational then it probably is, but it's not ridiculous. " Red Son looked back at him then and raised a brow. "I mean, who isn't afraid that they're letting their parents down in some way?" He remembered how nervous Xiaojiao was about the idea of disappointing her family, and he was always worried that he'd disappointed his fath-....

What was he thinking about again?.... right, Xiaojiao and her parents.

Red Son took his attention again and the confusion zipped right out of his mind. he gently detangled his hand from MK's and was moving to stand.

"I suppose you're right. And... In that regard I should probably thank you for allowing me the chance to properly process."

"Anytime, Red."

He stood as well, with nowhere else to go, he supposed he'd probably just go out onto the deck and do a little one-man training, heavens knew he needed it.

Red Son put a hand on his shoulder before either of them could pull away and when he turned back to face the demon-

Red Son was looking at him with intent. determination. And it was only then that MK realized that maybe holding someone's hand while they talked about some Real Shit with you, constantly sitting next to each other so as to be closer, falling asleep on each other, and sometimes when you wake up you glance at their mouth wondering how easy it would be to just...

Maybe that wasn't just all friendship overtures.

And maybe they'd had a name for their little something-or-another already.

Neither of them were ever very good at this whole 'self control' thing anyway.

Red Son was just as warm as he'd anticipated. His calloused fingers hooking under his chin as if to keep MK in place. And it was... chaste. Nothing like the fierce passionate devouring of another's mouth that he'd anticipated a demon to go for (that he'd daydreamed about) Almost... child-like. As if Red Son hadn't kissed anyone since before he hit Demon Puberty and didn't know how to do it right. And the action alone made MK feel very much like a child as well. Which was ridiculous he was a grownass man and Red Son was a fully matured demon, and the shortest most chaste little peck made him feel like a squeaky voiced kid.

When they parted he peeked his eyes open just a bit, and it seemed like Red Son had realized the same thing, the two of them shared a soft chuckle.

But then Red Son started to pull away, and that wouldn't do. MK wrapped his arms around the demon's shoulders and properly kissed him this time.

And it didn't feel quite as natural, but it did feel right.

So that was what mattered.

"I feel so alone, my love...."

kinda a mix of angst and fluff with spicynoodle. ig this is an au/alt timeline- should I continue this? maybe setup: Xiaotian and Red Son have been living together ever since DBK and PIF disowned Red Son for dating their enemy 2 years ago and sometimes Red Son misses them so he clings to his boyfriend for comfort lets start, shall we? Red Son was cuddling Xiaotian, both males hair down but the former demon prince's was visibly messy, which was odd since it was normally brushed and neat. MK or Xiaotian as he preferred to be called, looked worried about him "Whats wrong?" he asked. Red looked up at him and then looked down, saying nothing. "Red?" he asked again, Red Son replied "I feel so alone, my love..." Xiaotian cuddled Red tightly and kissed the top of his head "But you aren't, I'm here...it's not your fault they left you". Red Son looked back to Xiaotian, tears starting to form in the fire demon's eyes. His boyfriend started combing his messy and tangled hair with his fingers and both exchanged I love you's and Red Son fell asleep. To be continued....

Red Son Can't Cry*

He physically can't cry, he can barely tear up under most circumstances because his temperature increases with his emotions and when he's emotionally enough to cry, he's too hot, the tears evaporate too quickly.

The most that happens is he gets steamy eyed cause he's upset and his body is trying to cry but the water is evaporating so he's just got steam coming from his eyes.

He thinks it's annoying and embarrassing so he tries his hardest to not even let that happen

*However, there are some circumstances where he can cry.

If he's shocked, like, really, really deeply shaken up, instead of heating up he freezes, and in that emotional state of so startled that everything basically stops, he can cry and he is a big cryer.

This only comes around if he's absolutely terrified or horrified.

Seeing his first friend crush get stabbed by his "mother" then die to try and save him would certainly do it.

I am using this for when I turn MK into a monkey popsicle in my Spicynoodles Tangled AU and that is a threat.

Spicynoodles ship chart for my Tangled AU

Red Son has not had much physical touch in his entire life that isn't coming from LBD, he's mostly confused.

MK is just a big no touch zone. (You can blame his ex for that ;)

I'm sick so I did this instead of all my school work.

MK was being extra flirty with Red and he got all flustered, MK secretly thinks it's cute.

I drew these little things in like I dunno 3 hours I think. Pretty fast for me. I like MK's stupid lil smug face.

Wukong and Macaque have kids ? I saw a post mentioning an adopted daughter? Who are the kids and what is their connection to MK ?

Yes they do! Five of them!

Bai He is their adopted daughter, they adopted her after her o'pa died.

Then there is two sets of twins after Bai He. The older pair are ocs, the younger pair are Rumble and Savage.

Bai He's connection to MK is that they are actually half siblings, they share their o'pa.

The other kiddos relationship to him is that he is their new brother cause their dads adopted him pretty much immediately, so they are going to relentlessly tease him about Red Son and give him gray hairs from having to wrangle them.

They are the most chaotic little shits you have ever seen and they know it.

The world isn't safe for him. That's why he has to stay in his tower. But Red Son has spent his whole life in his tower, his only companion is his sister, Mei, the little dragon his mother brought home when he was young. His only idea of the world beyond comes from what his mother tells him and what he can see through his window. He just wants to see a little more. That's not too much to ask, right? Mother would disagree. But when a peculiar four eared monkey demon climbs into his tower while his mother is away, Red Son has a chance to see what's really out there. With the thief MK as his begrudging guide, and Mei to try to fight any threats they might face, Red Son leaves his tower and enters the world he's been hidden from. It's a lot nicer than Mother said. And what's it matter if the monkey boy is actually really sweet and makes his stomach flutter and his face turn the color of his hair? It's probably nothing. … Mei needs to stop looking at him like that. … MK needs to stop doing that eyebrow thing too.

Thief In The Tower

Spicynoodles Tangled AU chapter 6

Summary: MK flees from the guards chasing him down and takes refuge in a supposedly abandoned tower he finds.

Word count: 3k

Warnings: pretty chill, some mentions of death.

A/N: a little late for Valentine's Day but I got it out before the end of the month so I will take that as a win.

DBK looked up at the sound of the door to their bedroom opening. Mihou entered with a solemn expression on his face.

“Mihou? What are you doing up? You should be resting.” Iron Fan scolded the dark furred monkey.

“I'm fine-” Mihou broke off with a sudden tip forward.

DBK moved to catch his brother, but the macaque caught himself before he hit the ground. He eyed Mihou carefully, the fall the other had taken yesterday hadn't seemed like it did much damage, but they had been wrong about that before.

“Did you hit your head yesterday? You seem… unwell.” He said, guiding Mihou to sit down.

“I'm just tired, that's all.” Mihou assured them both.

“Why did you come here? You're supposed to be resting. And where are the children?” Iron Fan asked, glancing around for the little shades that had been instructed to watch their father.

Where are they? The cubs took their orders very seriously when it came to their parents or siblings' health, they wouldn't let Mihou come all this way on his own. A familiar fear leaped in his heart at their absence.

“Has something happened to them?!” He exclaimed.

“No, the kids are all safe. They're okay, they weren't nearby, don't worry.” Mihou told them quickly.

If something had happened to them, he doubted his brother would be so calm.

“But something has happened, I needed to be the one to tell you.” He said seriously.

DBK glanced at Iron Fan, she shared his confusion. If it wasn't about the cubs, what could be so serious?

“A group of thieves broke into the palace, three of them, the entry guards were able to identify them as the Horned Demon Twins Yin and Jin, and the Monkie Kid.” Mihou paused, glancing away.

“They stole his crown.” he whispered.

His blood boiled.

He had heard of the Monkie Kid before, an annoying little thief that had popped up a few years back, stealing from whoever he could. The little brat concealed his identity with shadow magic, he was supposedly impossible to identify, but that little thief made the dire mistake of stealing from him.

Worse, he stole from his son.

DBK would ensure he was found.

“What is being done about this?” Iron Fan asked with a faux calm in her voice.

“Ao Lie is in pursuit with the Crown Guard.”

MK ducked under the arrows shot at him with a gleeful laugh.

Oh boy are they upset about this! He cackled.

The Ao Lie was leading the chase, and as intimidating as the dragon’s form was, he was doing a pretty good job of staying ahead of him, and the rest of the guards on their ass.

Yin and Jin were annoyingly keeping up with him, the demons had been keeping pace with him well enough that he couldn't escape without dragging the two of them into the shadows with him. It would be really convenient for him if he could get them arrested, he wouldn't have to worry about some silly revenge plot.

If he played his cards right, he could get away with the crown and get them arrested.

The twins would be pissed but they would be in jail. Besides, that's the price they had to pay for trusting him of all people.

He took a sharp turn deeper into the forest, the excessive underbrush would slow the dragon guard captain down. He noticed the slowly sloping down landscape that he and the twins were running on, if he had to guess, they were running into a narrow steep gully, a good place to separate himself from the twins.

A few minutes later, just as he suspected, they came across the end of the gully, a sheer cliff face stood in their way. The rocks wouldn't be a challenge for him to climb.

“I'll climb up and toss a rope down for you two.” He suggested.

The twins shot him a doubtful look. Maybe they weren't as dumb as he thought.

“Give us the crown first.” Yin ordered.

“Alright, fine.” MK passed the stachel to the golden demon.

The pair looked surprised it was that easy. Little did they know. MK quickly scaled the cliff, reaching the top after less than a minute of climbing.

“Now help us up!” Jin told him.

MK glanced over his shoulder at the twins so far below him. He slowly rose to his feet, he was a bit of a dramatic.

“Yeah… so about all that,”

He held the real satchel out above them, the fake Yin had poofed out of existence. And right on time, the guards came around the bend of the gully.

“Best of luck to you fellas.” He gave them a mock salute and took off.

“MONKIE KID!” The demon twins howled after him.

He snickered to himself. What did they expect? They were working with him! He was the Monkie Kid!

A dragon roar came from behind.

Fuck! He forgot about the dragon.

How did he forget about that Ao Lie was actively chasing him down?

MK broke into a sprint, tearing through the forest at a breakneck pace. He could hear a steep waterfall up ahead. He could let the dragon see him go over the edge of the cliff and “die”, while he made his escape through his shadows.

The dragon probably wouldn't think he was actually dead and he'd have to lay low for a while, but that wasn't a problem for him. No one knew what he really looked like.

The trees thinned at the edge of the cliff, MK turned once he was free of them, backing up to the cliff like he was cornered.

Ao Lie burst out of the trees, MK held the satchel over the cliff threateningly.

“Don’t come any closer! I’ll drop it!” he threatened.

The dragon glared at him. He took a step forward, MK forced a grimace to appear on his mask. He took a purposefully unsteady step back, “slipping” on the loose rocks. The rocks buckled under his weight, the dragon's eyes went wide.

MK was falling into his own shadow after going over the cliff side before the dragon even knew what happened.

He popped out of the shadows a good bit away from the cliff, he could see Ao Lie peering over the edge for him, but the dragon couldn't see or sense him in his flattened shadow form, not at that distance.

However, it was oddly cold where he landed.

He scanned his surroundings, nothing seemed out of place, normal greenery and foliage growing in the ground and up the sides of another, shorter cliff. He slipped over to investigate the rocks of the shorter cave, it got colder, just for a second, it was barely noticeable.

He left the shadows, slowly running his hands along the cool rocks, his fingers sank into the rocks. He pushed one hand in further, taking the other out to make sure he wouldn't get trapped. His hand slid easily into a vacant space in the rocks, he could feel a subtle, cool breeze.

A barrier to some path. He determined.

MK wasn't a fool, he knew not to mess with another demon's territory.

He was, however, in need of a place to hide.

This demon had a lot of subtle protections around their claimed land, clearly they were trying to remain undetected. Hell, he could barely detect it before he entered their territory, and he was really good at picking up this stuff.

I just hope no one's home. He thought, plunging himself through the rock barrier.

He opened his eyes to a narrow path carved into the rocks, torches with eerie, blue flames flickering in them lined the walls. He followed the path, making an occasional scratch into the rock wall so he could find his way back out.

The path went on for much longer than he expected, it got ever so slightly colder the further he went. Finally, he saw a light at the end of the path.

He stepped out of the long tunnel into a rocky valley. The valley was full of lush vegetation, despite the child in the air, a waterfall on the far end fed into a series of small streams and ponds. And there was a tower built in the middle of the valley.

He focused his ears on the inside of the tower, and didn't hear any sounds of life within it.

Well, that's as good a place to lay low as any. He shrugged.

He searched around the tower for an entrance, after finding none, he decided to climb

The vines covering the brick of the tower made it pretty easy to climb. It would've been a lot harder for someone not suited to climbing like he was.

Granted, the tower was fifty feet tall, it wasn't a quick climb by any measures, but he made it to the window door thing that was all the way up at the top of the tower.

What a weird design. He thought.

He slipped inside quietly, closing the window doors behind him and latching them shut.

He quickly glanced around, checking he was truly alone, then he pulled the crown out of the satchel.

“Finally got you to myself.” He snickered.

A beating heart suddenly pounded in his ears. It was coming from right behind him, he turned-

Something struck him in the side of the head.

Red Son lurched away from the intruding demon with a yelp.

The demon in question fell unconscious to the floor.

“Is he… dead?” He wondered to Mei.

The little dragon poked the top of the stranger’s finger, it twitched, but he didn't stir.

“So… not dead then.” Red Son concluded.

Mei shook her head, he loosened his grip on the frying pan he had smacked the intruder with. It had been the first thing he grabbed when he heard the demon entering.

Strangely, the demon had been covered in a dark, subtly glowing purple when he first entered. Whatever that was was gone now that he was unconscious.

He was different from Mother and Cōng, very different. He had clawed fingers, hand-like feet, and thick, dark fur on a long tail. His tail was different from his own and Mei's.

A rich, dark red hood covered the intruder's head. Red Son carefully pulled it back with the handle of the frying pan.

The demon had a burgundy marking on his face, it looked kind of like a mask, he had three little spots under the mask on his cheek. Movement in the corner of his eye drew his attention away from the stranger's face-

The intruder had two ears on one side of his head, two glowing petal shaped ears that fluttered and twitched slightly every few seconds.

Red Son stared at the glowing purple and dark pink ears. He'd heard of demons like this once before in a book he used to love reading, one of the characters had been a monkey demon with six ears that were shaped like lotus petals and glowed. He had burned the book by accident one day and Mother couldn't find another copy.

He must be one of those monkey demons then. He concluded.

The demon's eye suddenly snapped open, Red Son yelped and smacked him on the head again.

Mei snickered at him, he glared at the little dragon.

“What else was I supposed to do with him? Toss him out the window?” He asked her.

He looked back at the very unconscious demon who somehow made his way into his secret, hidden tower.

“What am I supposed to do with him?!”

Mother would not be pleased to find an intruder in their home.

He looked around for a place to hide the unconscious intruder, somewhere Mother wouldn't check and that the intruder couldn't escape from if he woke up while Mother was home.

Hiding a body from Mother was not how I expected this day to go. He thought.

Mei squeaked at him, pointing out the wardrobe by Mother's mirror. Mother rarely used it, perfect.

“Thanks Mèi mei.” He gave her a quick pat on the head.

He grabbed the monkey demon by his feet and dragged him over to the wardrobe. He was smaller than he first appeared to be when he came in.

Red Son carefully, quickly dropped the demon into the wardrobe. He slammed the door shut, setting the nearest chair against the door to keep the demon in should he wake up.

“I have a person in my closet… I have a person in my closet!” He gasped.

He caught sight of himself in the mirror. He fought an intruder to their home and he beat them! He won! He stood a little taller, pride blossomed in his chest.

His mother thought it was too dangerous, and he did it! He could show her he was able to handle himself in the real world.

“I guess it's not that hard, is it Mei?” He prompted the little dragon.

She was digging through the stranger’s bag with excited squeaking, he turned to see what got her so excited.

“What is it?” He wondered.

Mei pushed the bag towards him, with her head still inside of it. She pulled her head out and looked at him expectantly. He reached inside to see what he could find, his hand brushed against something solid and cool to the touch.

He pulled out a golden crown.

The crown was shaped like a bull's head at the front, with red gemstones set in place of the eyes, fire opals were set around it looking like a mane of fiery hair.

He held it away from himself, something like this was too fragile and valuable for him to ruin. Mei mimed putting something on her head then pointed to him and the crown he was holding.

“What?! No! I'll destroy it!” He objected.

She growled at him.

“Fine! But you can't blame me if it melts!” He scolded the pushy dragon.

She chirped happily at that. Carefully, Red Son lifted the crown up above his head, he willed his temperature to go down, then gingerly set it in place. Mei cooed and awed at him.

It did fit him surprisingly well, even with his horns.

“Red Son!”

Mother's home! He ripped the crown off his head, stuffing it back into the sack it came in. As he looked around for a place to hide the foreign objects, Mei scurried over to the window and squeaked down to Mother and Cōng. He managed to find a pot that wasn't made out of glass and shoved the whole thing into it, then he rushed to the window, throwing his hair out for her.

“I have a big surprise for you, flower.” Mother called as he pulled her up.

“I actually have one too.” he mumbled, not really expecting her to hear.

“Oh? I can't wait to see it.” Mother laughed harshly.

Oh no.

He glanced at the wardrobe with the demon monkey hidden inside of it. He could direct her attention away from it until it was a better time for him to announce that he had defeated his first enemy, she would be proud of him for that. She was always proud of his achievements.

He pulled Mother to the window, she came in, holding her basket proudly.

“I brought back sichuan peppercorn, I'm going to make hot and sour soup for your birthday.” she said, revealing the peppercorns and other ingredients for his favorite soup.

“Thank you Mother.” He said.

Mei squawked indignantly. Mother gave her a head pat with a chuckle.

“Yes, I have something for you too.” She sighed.

“Now, what surprise do you have for me?” She said expectantly.

He wasn't ready to tell her.

“Red Son?” Mother pressed.

He has to tell her.

“O-oh it's nothing really, it's not that big of a deal, just, about going to see the floating lights?” He mumbled.

“This again? We already talked about it.” Mother dismissed him.

She moved to the kitchen, setting her basket on the counter.

“I know you think I can't handle myself out there, but-”

“It’s not you, Flower, it is the rest of the world I do not trust.” Mother cut in swiftly.

“Well, I think I can change your mind.” he said hopefully.

“Red Son. Enough.” Mother warned.

“Just see what I did, I can handle myself-”

“NO! You will not leave this tower! Ever! If I let you leave her death will have been for nothing! I will not let this world take you like it took my sister!” Mother screeched.

Red Son flinched. He had forgotten how sensitive Mother was around this time of year. After all, every birthday he had was another year her sister was dead.

“I can't fail her twice.” Mother turned her back to him.

Cōng approached her, wordlessly guiding her to her chair. The man gave him a pointed glare when Mother wasn't looking.

“Mother…?” He took a hesitant step towards her.

She glanced at him, her eyes harsh and tired.

“All I was going to say… I know what I want from my birthday…” he said, kneeling by her chair.

“And that is?”

“New sand, the colored sand you once brought me.” He said softly.

“That is a very long trip, Red Son, three days.” Mother sighed, exasperated.

“I just thought it was a better idea than the… stars.” He gave Mother a weak smile.

She cupped his face, he leaned into the cool touch.

“Are you sure you'll be alright on your own? I couldn't live with myself if something happened to you.” she said.

“I know I'm safe as long as I'm here.” He told her.

“Very well then.” Mother smiled.

He and Mei gathered the necessary provisions for Mother's trip, Mother was waiting by the window, Cōng was standing attentively at her side.

“I'll be back in three days. I love you very much, Flower.” Mother kissed the top of his head.

“I love you more.” He hugged her.

“I love you most.” she tapped his nose.

He lowered Mother and Cōng out of the tower, and watched them leave through the tunnel.

He stayed at the window for a few minutes, waiting for her to come back.

She didn't.

He turned to the wardrobe.

He was going to see those lights.
