Por que a abordagem de guia de campo extremamente didático é tão utilizar-la em projetos de evolução especulativa?
Why is the extremely didactic field guide approach are so popular in speculative evolution projects?

Just some school doodles today.
DRAWING I] Still trying to figure a better design for my Ivilitium aerius and getting used to drawing more realistic proportions. Headshot of one with short, spiky head plates. (Feathers???) I was also experimenting with their “teeth” arrangement. (Beak? Bony plates?) oh, and I was thinking about giving them tongue barbs.
DRAWING II] Simply my spec bio sona sketched in my more angular style. He fluffs up when feeling certain emotions.
DRAWING III] Niko in my angular style sprinting. He can’t move his “hands” upwards (dorsiflex) as much as a human. If you are curious as to why, tell me and I can explain in a separate post. :]
Oh, and also- I have a question for you guys: (It’s Related to my genus, Ivilitium)
Do you think having nares like in the placement shown down below would be biologically efficient?
Smells would still be detected more towards the facial area, though. So this still gives the appearance that they have nostrils in a more familiar placing to what we see here on Earth in many vertebrates.

A new development for my new speculative biology project that will be centred around an extreme humid planet. This concept art is of a little dude who is part of a family of creatures that has evolved to its humid environment. ( do not have a name yet :P ) they do not have eyes as the need for vision is nothing when you cannot see what’s 2 feet in-front of you. Instead they rely on their highly developed sense of smell and echolocation to track down their food source, this being native vegetation in their wet damp environment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Similarly to fish on earth, they rely on their gill like organs for respiratory function, as the amount of small water particles in the air would make it feel like you’re drowning to the average human being. (If anyone is down for this little dudes name suggestions go wild)

Oh you have a biological sciences degree? What do you do?
I taxonomize clowns.
I make speculative evolution trees of clown breeds for my surreal clown husbandry inspired worldbuilding project that i created just so I can give my clown OCs trauma rooted in backstory

oh sorry, did you think that last post I made was a final design? I've been working on these assholes for over 2 years straight and there are versions of them that will never see the light of day; I'm not about to *stop* just because I posted one online 🙃 I spent a few hours writing up a lore dump for these guys before deciding it should wait until I have a lineup with more variants

Gut symbols and organ script
Tumblr media
This is a little brainstorm of symbols used to deliver some kind of meaning (not an actual alphabet yet) in a culture where organs are thought of as something sacred, valuable. It is a foundation for actual writing systems. This culture is dominated by a carvinorious species (the Yuo Yowa) and its practitioners believe that organs are an extention of dieties / legends / spirits / ghosts, however you wanna call them. Each organ has a different meaning and a different spirit that extends into it. For example, the intestines mean long and safe travels, if prepared correctly, and the meaning can vary depending on the animal the organs are from. Individuals can recieve blessings or curses depending on how the spiritual leader prepares the gut. If the gut isn’t prepared in a specific way by the spiritual leader, eating it yields no effects besides filling up your stomach.
The symbols are meant to be read in a linear way, and are almost always drawn “inside the body cavity” of the creature the “writing” is about. The symbols can be rotated or flipped, the only rule is that they need to be read from mouth to anus. Remember these are not letters, just symbols with meanings that when in a “sentence”, can be interpreted in many slightly different ways.
I still haven’t completely decided on the actual meaning of the organs and I’m not quite satisfied with the way I pictured the “cross section” of the creatures, I’ll definitely work more on this. Here’s my first brainstorm page:

I suck at alt text, if you have any criticism or a good tutorial on how to write those I’d appreciate it.

The Enydreian Explosion
Tumblr media
The Uridachian Period ended not with a bang, but with a whimper. As the primitive creatures of the age began to refine themselves, they evolved the first mouths, the first guts, and the first complex body plans. The evolutionary progression of these multicellular organisms proved to be so devastating to the microbial algal mats of the era, that the algae were forced into decline, only surviving in extreme conditions that couldn't be reached by other organisms. This famine of the natural world prompted the first major extinction event since the Great Oxygenation Catastrophe almost 2 billion years ago, forcing many groups into decline and several into outright extinction.
The survivors, however, were forced to adapt to a new world of scarcity and competition. In the wake of the Global Famine, a new class of organism has evolved - the first predators. The appearance of these predators has prompted the appearance of the first means of protection - body armor, sensory organs, defensive behaviors -, which has forced the predators to further refine their methods to counteract the defenses of their prey. This has triggered an arms race between predator and prey, which has led to an explosion of biodiversity, the likes of which planet Astraea has never seen before, and will likely never see again.
It is now the Enydreian Period, and the ocean is in the midst of revolution. New species have been appearing at an incredible rate, and competition between these various organisms has turned the seas into a battleground. Whatever the outcome of this period of rapid evolution, the face of life on Astraea will forever be changed from it...

Morphologyposting again boys let’s gooooo
This is the Nangata species (which i made a ref for a VERY long time ago), they're a group of semi-aquatic phocids found along the far south-western banks of the Khalodnan supercontinent (specifically around the Kor landmass, a map will come later i swear).
Their bodies are covered in incredibly dense fur and combined with blubber reserves, they hardly get cold. They can also hold their breath for around an hour, making dry land trivial.
Many Nangata spend most of their lives in the water, travelling from place to place wherever food is available (squid and krill are their favourites). Sometimes they may set up shop on small islands or rocky outcrops, but it won't be long before they pack everything up and head on the move again.
Their small, tight-knit communities have no overlap with any other nation on the mainland, to a degree that they are often the subject of local legends.

this is unrelated. I am funny

Having evolved for the harsh terrain of Shili's cliffs and mountains, the Togruta have developed a number of adaptations that might seem exotic to other species in the galaxy. Togruta are ruminants that historically grazed on the tough mountain plants of their homeworld, as a result, the Togruta have complex, multichambered stomachs that allow them to digest the hardy plant matter.
Togruta typically have poor eyesight, which has in part led to the evolution of their most prominent feature—montrals, which are in actuality highly derived, fleshy ossicones. A Togruta's montrals contain around 70% of their body's nerve endings, and thus are incredibly sensitive to touch, pressure. and temperature changes. This sensitivity allows for a Togruta to more quickly sense weather changes, as well as unknown movements in the tall mountain grasses. This sense is notably more strong with force sensitive Togruta.
The three lekku situated around the head are also derived from ossicones, but serve very different roles. The back lekku functions similarly to a tail, and helps with balance on precarious cliffsides, while the front lekku have evolved into pseudo-limbs of a sort, similar to an elephant's trunk. This might have originated from the ancestors of Togruta needing to sift through undergrowth to find edible plants. But as the species became more intelligent, the lekku have become more precise.
The montrals and lekku of a Togruta are often the most obvious marker of sexual dimorphism, as male Togruta have shorter lekku on average, and thinner montrals then the females do. Adolescent Togruta don't have these visual distinctions yet, and it is very easy for members of other species to mistake one sex for another.
Togruta can vary greatly in color, from deep reds to light yellows on the main body, and from light blue to olive green on the hairless montrals and lekku. They will always have a series of white markings though, which helped to camoflauge grazing Togruta in the species' ancient past.

geminae aquaticus
geminae aquaticus, this plant grows with 2 stems, each twisting the same way the other does, they both mimic eachother nearly perfectly. It grows purple flowers that will pollinate eachother and then the two flowers will become seedpods which will float up and when it reaches a surface that's underwater, it'll grow up

Background practice, featuring two Ivilitium aerius.
Probably somewhere in Colorado.
I didn’t give this much thought or time because the weird-ass artblock variant that I have had for… 2 months or so now isn’t letting my mind advance.
I could definitely do better. I must do better! The background only took me 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Not Splatoon related but I've been working on a little project as of recent... lots of aliens VERY MUCH based off birds and pterosaurs if you couldn't tell, maybe they'll look a bit different in the future?
Here's one of the aliens, Dentinhos (little teeth), nicknamed after those little chips in her beak!! She wants to document the nature and wildlife of her planet and is on the move a lot because of it. I would like to nerd out with her
