Yes - because the existing laws at the time gave the king more rights and protection than any other person. It was basically impossible to put him on trial for a crime legally.

If anyone else were accused of that crime (high treason), it would've been an easy trial with a clear sentence (not just during frev; we know how treason was addressed in Ancient Régime).

But Louis had special protections in the law. So that was a pickle. And that's why the Convention took so long to figure out what to do (if he could be tried legally at all). It was an example of "it can't really be done legally, but it's because the law is bad". Yet they (majority at least) didn't want to go "fuck the laws, it's unfair for him to have privileges over other people, especially for that type of crime". So they struggled to find a loophole that would make it non-illegal and in the process some important things were said about the nature of rulership, the divine right of kings, equality, democracy etc. But yeah, there was no way to do it legally because the law was bad. (Edit: And I think rulers generally still enjoy these protections around the world, so it wasn't unusual. Still bad.)

Hey, Shiranui— Found your file while digging around in the archives the other day, and it made me wonder what your genin days must have been like, since you're two years older than Ebisu and three years older than Gai. I'm guessing that's when the mother hen instincts started?

Jeez way to make me feel like a fossil. Actually, I got most of the mother hen traits from my dad. He was the reason I graduated at twelve rather than earlier like my genin teammates. There were whispers of war all throughout my childhood and my dad point blank refused to let me become a child soldier. He begged the academy to hold me back as long as they did.

It stung, at first. Made me think I wasn’t good enough in his eyes. Now as an adult having fought in two major wars, I almost wish I had waited longer still. And when I see genin nowadays trying to grow up so quickly they miss their own relative safety in youth… I think dear old Dad had the right idea. Kids should be kids.

you know i usually stay away from politics but given that a lot of big media is covering the new spanish laws i'm here to give my two cents on the matter

fucking finally. spain doing something good. yes. and it's making all the bigots, homophobes, transphobes in spain angry and i'm living for it <33

spain is an awfully conservative country and we're having elections soon. to sum up there used to be 2 political parties in here until a few years ago when more parties started appearing. this forced people to make coalitions to form the goverment (what we have right now!). there's a far right group that has been growing in popularity like crazy since once again spain is conservative af and half of the population's mindset is stuck to what they thought back after the war and the other half of the population was shot to death :) the other big right wing party here is somehow trying to make a coalition with them for the next elections and ofc they're planning to turn down all these laws as soon as they get in the power. and god. it's so scary. seeing these people say something along the likes of "homosexuality and trans people have been raising to a worrisome amount these past years" and say. the absolute nastiest things you can think of. i really don't want to translate that but i'm sure that you know what i mean

as a woman i feel so scared of what it's to come
