There are as many variations on the Feast of the Seven Fishes as there are participants. Menus often have changed drastically since the turn of the 19th century, but the object of cultivating family and heritage remains. Photograph By Andrew Scrivani, The New York Times/Redux
What is the Feast of the Seven Fishes?
This Christmas Eve seafood feast is an Italian American tradition that dates back to an immigration wave in the 1900s.
— By Allie Yang | Wednesday July 26, 2023
An episode aptly titled “Fishes” from Hulu’s breakout series The Bear explores complex family dynamics against the backdrop of an Italian American tradition: The Feast of the Seven Fishes.
Throughout the Season 2 episode, no one seems able to adequately explain its history. Characters attempt to contextualize the origins of the meal, with explanations ranging from “it’s tradition… the seven fishes” to “it’s a chance to be together and to take care of each other and to eat together, and there’s seven fishes, which means you have to make seven entirely different dishes, seven entirely different ways.” A discerning viewer will note the circular reasoning.
By episode’s end, the audience might leave with unanswered questions. Namely: What is the Feast of the Seven Fishes, and where did it originate?
Italian Origins
The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a dear tradition to many Italian Americans who enjoy (at least) seven different seafood dishes on Christmas Eve. You might find labor-intensive preparations of baccalà (salted cod fish), calamari fritti with lemon and marinara sauce, stuffed escarole, fried smelt, scungilli (conch) in a chilled seafood salad, and stuffed clams oreganata.
You won’t hear about “festa dei sette pesci” in Italy though, says Michael Di Giovine, professor of anthropology at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and author of Edible Identities. In Italy, the holiday is simply “la vigilia,” “the eve” of Christmas. And fish is really only eaten in Southern Italy on the holiday.
This is because the feast has evolved to be uniquely Italian American over the past hundred years.
At the turn of the 19th century, Italian immigration exploded, numbering 300,000 in the 1880s, jumping to 2 million by 1900. As Italian immigrants moved away from extended family and their children grew and married Americans, the Feast of the Seven Fishes evolved from la vigilia into something much more extravagant. Di Giovine says the feast was a way to differentiate themselves, a marker of identity. It also became a tradition to strengthen bonds with both family present and ancestors past.
Today, there are as many interpretations of the feast as there are participants, Di Giovine says.
Why Fish—And Why Are There Seven?
A vast majority of Italian immigrants to the United States were from rural Southern Italy at the turn of the 19th century. When the country was unified in 1861, they had new freedoms from a weakened aristocracy. They came to America because there were jobs (from building railroads to skyscrapers) and mobility. Friends and family found success and brought their loved ones to the U.S.
Some say fish was chosen for the Feast because it was plentiful for impoverished families in Southern Italy. Others say the sea represented Italian Americans’ connection between their old and new homes. Still others say fish was served simply because it’s seen as an aphrodisiac.
Though many families no longer associate the feast with Catholic tradition, there’s likely a religious explanation for the seafood. The first Christians used fish iconography to denote membership. In one biblical tale, Jesus procures a large catch of fish, and promises his disciples an abundance of followers when he commands them to be “fishers of men.” To this day, the Pope wears the “ring of the fisherman.”
Seven is also a holy figure: it’s the number of sacraments and deadly sins. In the Bible, Jesus miraculously feeds a crowd of people with seven loaves and fishes. “Consumed in multiples of seven, then, fish may be a deeply ingrained symbol of sanctifying and revivifying a plentiful group, and of promising continued abundance for posterity,” Di Giovine writes in a 2010 paper on the subject.
Tradition is Always Evolving
Italian culture is very regional, with small communities specializing in certain foods. North and Central Italy didn’t eat fish on Christmas Eve. The rush of immigrants at the turn of the 19th century were from the South, which has Spanish influences on the language and food. Fish, olive oil, vinegar, beans, tomatoes and fried foods like pizza fritta (pizza pockets) and zeppoles (donuts) are foods from the Italian South (notably not pasta).
In the 1900s, anti-Italian sentiment was high and Italians from different regions were lumped together by outsiders. Eventually, traditions also became melded together to produce the current Americanized image of pan-Italian food that ranges from pizza to cannoli, which are both regional in Italy.
After World War II, Italians were accepted members of American society. They moved (with everyone else) to the suburbs, their kids went to school with those from other backgrounds, and TV was popularized, homogenizing the population’s taste. Language and religion are lost quickly in this situation, Di Giovine says, and food could be a way to separate yourself that you could choose when to use.
Writer and director Robert Tinnell made a comic in 2004 about his experience with the Feast of the Seven Fishes, which he later made into a 2019 movie. Growing up in North Central West Virginia, he fondly remembers his great grandmother organizing the Feast. After she died, his grandfather and other men in the family took over. That particular masculine domesticity is something that the first Italian immigrants would have also performed out of necessity: men came to America first, without their wives and daughters.
However, knowledge about where to shop, when to prepare, how to cook, the history behind the meal, and family traditions quickly became the responsibility of mothers to pass down to their daughters, Di Giovine says. They are also likely the ones who have the ultimate say in making changes to recipes. Over time, families often tweak the menu to make things easier, cheaper, more abundant, and more accommodating of dietary restrictions.
“We’re not precious. I do a couple things that would have been on her table,” Tinnell says, referring to his great grandmother. “But then my wife loves seeking out new things. A few years ago, we picked up oysters and set them up outside over open flames; we roasted them in the shells. My family never did that. But I wouldn't trade the time that I spend with my father-in-law, my brothers, to all the kids—it's a new thing. And that's what's important here… that togetherness and that shared experience.”

okie who do u think ......... in all of the ffi teams would secretly listen to overly cutesy kpop songs....... think about ur answer well🐹🎤
Ohhh, nice question!!
To be fair, I'm not really an expert on Kpop (I like a lot of songs and bands, but I'm not super up to date with new bands and lore about the idols), so I apologize if something is off 😔
🇰🇷 To be honest, I think that the main cutesy K-pop song listeners would probably be Noh Sung-joon and Aphrodi 🪽 from the South Korean team. But neither is exactly discreet about it...
In Sung-joon's description, it's stated that he'd love to fly all over the world as a Hallyu star 🌟 in the future. His favourite K-pop idols would probably be Jin from the BTS or maybe Jisung from NCT Dream.
Nagumo 🔥 would probably be secretly a hard-die fan of a lot of bands (especially TWICE, Blackpink, and Weeekly), but if asked about it, he would deny everything. Suzuno and Aphrodi would definitely make fun of him for that, lol 😂.
Choi Chang-soo, the captain, is not super into K-pop, but he likes to listen to a few bands, particularly Red Velvet and Exo.
🇺🇸 I'd like to think that Dylan from Unicorn knows a lot of songs, but I feel like he's more on the chaotic side of K-pop rather than the cute one. Mark doesn't necessarily dislike the kind of music Dylan listens to, but after hearing the same song on repeat for the 15th time, anyone would go 🤪.
🇬🇧 Edgar would be hesitant at first, but eventually, he would turn out to like a few songs (he still thinks English music is better, though).
🇦🇷 Teres would refuse because 🙄 😤 God forbid that man to listen to anything else other than reggaeton and old tango songs his abuelo recommended.
🇩🇪 Jonas mainly listens to techno and alternative indie music, but Dylan would annoy him so much that he'd have to give up and accept to give K-pop a try, and to his surprise, he likes quite a few songs.
🇪🇸 Now, Querardo is similar to Teres when it comes to music taste. He likes a lot of Spanish 💃 and Latino artists, but sadly, he's not too keen on K-pop and foreign music.
🇧🇷 Mack likes all kinds of music, from classical to hard-core dubstep. He likes K-pop as well and follows a few idols on his socials.
🇶🇦 Bilal listens to a lot of K-pop, even though the rest of his team doesn't understand the appeal. He especially likes songs that have Middle Eastern influences in the instrumental.
🇮🇹 Fideo has listened to K-pop music before (thanks to Marco and Angelo), and even though he enjoyed the songs and the bands he was presented with, he kinda forgot about its existence. He still has the songs in his playlist, but he listens to local Italian hits more than everything else.
I'm unsure about the rest of the FII teams and players; maybe Shine and Quincy from Oz 🇦🇺 and Abari from South Africa 🇿🇦 would enjoy K-pop, too.
What about you, anon? Who were you thinking about? 🤔

Madrid, Spain 🇪🇸
Dates: September 24-27, 2024
Stayed at: The Hats hostel in C. Imperial, 9, Centro, 28012 in Madrid, Spain
Total price of hostel: $127.37
LODGING
My stay at The Hat hostel went beyond my expectations. I picked this hostel because it is in a central location, and the reviews were fairly positive. I booked a mixed 4-bed dorm as soon as I arrived to Madrid, and my roommates were all quiet and considerate. I hope I was too... The room is pretty small, more narrow than wide and there are outlets on the sides of each bunk; bedding provided. The view from my room was to the front of the hostel and we would have the window/door open for fresh air, keep in mind Madrid's kinda loud, but it was so worth it. Not all rooms are facing the street, btw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hostel has 5 floors with a rooftop (where you can order food), and a -1 (basement/cave area) floor. The -1 floor is where the kitchen is, and is where the nightly sangria making class is held. The host (who also hosts the pub crawl) was so friendly and informative, infectious energy. In the elevators and on various parts of the hostel there is information on activities hosted by the hostel. There is a daily walking tour, and a nightly pub crawl (great ways to meet other travelers). There is a bar in the lobby. The hostel also has private rooms and bathrooms, too. It was never extremely loud out in the hallways during my stay, everyone was respectful (I was on the 2nd floor).
GETTING AROUND
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Walking, walking and more walking. This city is so pedestrian friendly. The metros are great, too. I only used the metro to and from the airport, buses are constantly running although I did not get on the bus, either. Spanish is necessary however most of the locals I came across spoke english in some way shape or form. Even when I'd talk in spanish they'd reply in english sometimes.
FOOD
At the hostel there is breakfast for an extra fee each morning, although I did not participate in that.
Lots of pizza and tapa options, restaurants with seating outside is normal. The price of food/a meal is reasonable, and I mostly ate small meals. I ate a potato omelet, with wine and a side of bread which was delicious, 8/10, also had pizza, dumplings, ice cream, cinnamon rolls, empanadas, churros and horchata (not all on the same day). I drank a lot of wine LOL.
Tumblr media
WHAT DID I DO?
My first night, I went to a pub crawl hosted by the hostel. Before that though, the hostel hosted a sangria making class I participated in. The pub crawl consists of going to 4 different bar clubs, 1 shot is included in the price, and we ended the night at the club. Price: 20 EUR
•Visited many book stores
•walked around (bring your tennis shoes)
• Spanish meetup event
•open mic night event at Generator Madrid hostel
•free walking tour
OVERALL ENERGY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, it was my first time in Europe and I was surprised at how different Spain is from latin america aside from... religion and language. I realized just how indigenous and african influenced latin america is, and just how little I knew about Spain aside from it colonizing latin america. Madrid reminded me so much of New York, but cleaner/organized (I say this as a born and raised New Yorker). I injoyed learning about Madrid history especially in terms of the symbology of the cats and the bear clawing up the tree. The city is bustling with tourists and locals alike so it was hard to get an in depth read of it, there is an underground feel to it though if that makes sense-- as if the real part of the city happens underneath what we see.

I remember when gio said she’d be rich even without Ronaldo, I sort of believe her although it’ll probably take a bit longer for her as photos of her and other famous Spanish influencers or we’ll know people in Spain 🇪🇸(mostly men) obviously exist… google Georgina Rodriguez and men or men before Ronaldo; and you’ll see some pictures of her and apparently well known men in Spain… girlie was plotting her easy life 🤣 I ain’t mad at her. Theirs even rumours that she used to be a stripper at opium nightclub in Madrid and that’s where her and Ronaldo met. Ronaldo’s PR team made up the Gucci story to clean up her image when they became serious. Ps girlie wasted no time getting pregnant 🤰 too

I agree
That video of taemin and the ice cream is gonna be running around my head for the next year
[the steamy ice cream moment in case someone missed it]
assemble, oral fixation squad (ahem, yet again). taemin's always doing all that ish with his mouth. time to expose his wicked ways: he actually has varying degrees of escalation.
stage one - the elegant, mature version. spanish lover el taymín unleashed, attention señoritas y señores (... unsurprisingly, taem has a thing for spain, you can see the influence in his work a lot 🇪🇸 ❤️ )
Tumblr media
stage two - princely puppy gaze pout attack, it's super effective (i know i know, taemin insists he's a catboy, but right here it's very 🐶 y'know)
Tumblr media
stage three - cute, playful version. he's an expert in this, we all know. proving yet again he has some of the best peachy lips in the game, they're big, they're fantastic, elastic, who allowed
Tumblr media
stage four - whatever this is!! when will he stop flirting like that! nibbling and biting AT THE SAME TIME! cuz when he's nibbling and biting he's niting!
Tumblr media
and then, brace thyself...
stage five - BOOM. straight up face-sitting POV because he can 🤑🆘 🔞 ⚠️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the eternal seducer, exactly on brand. ...all we can say is thank you 🔥 😂
bonus: worry not. even god has a weakness. taemin might be good at licking, but— i mean watch this, the klutzy man 😂

My thoughts about the JESC 2022 songs (before Ukraine and Armenia's entry releases). Part 1:
(This will be in order of release of the videos at the official JESC YouTube channel)
🇬🇧 Freya Skye "Lose My Head":
United Kingdom sending two amazing songs the same year? Wow, they are really serious this time. Plus the fact UK is returning to the JESC after so long, this is like them saying "You loved Sam Ryder, right? Well, guess what surprise we have prepared, world! See you again in Yerevan!" after years of them being at the bottom of vibes at the ESC.
Tumblr media
And MY GOD. THE SONG. It's not a standard "funky pop" song like one could expect from UK for a JESC. Freya has STYLE. The rhythm, the royal queen set and all. Love the song. And she looks like a real queen. One of the JESC fandom favorites (and I agree with them), and one of my chosen ones to win at this year's ESC!
🇳🇱 Luna "La Festa":
Good and catchy song? Check. A cute voice and a good singer? Check. Something innovative besides the "funky pop" vibes? CHECK. The Netherlands really wanted to send a literal party to Yerevan, with a mix of electronic dance-inducing rhythm that surprises you after the traditional "kids pop" first part, with an add-on of those Greek party-like vibes.
Tumblr media
After the (totally undeserved) last place of Ayana with her mix of Japanese and Dutch roots in her song, the Netherlands have a fricking chance to avenge her. And like most JESC fans this year, I'm rooting for her to win the contest! Come on, don't leave Ralf Mackenbach (winner of 2009) alone.
🇲🇰 Lara ft. Jovan & Irina "Životot E Pred Mene":
Let's be honest. I didn't expect North Macedonia to send something that would rival their 2021 entry "Green Forces" so easily. But gosh. Their 2022 song is as catchy AF. Slow-paced, but moving and groovy! (And has a doggie :3)
Tumblr media
While it sounds (and the videoclip looks) like your typical song about friendship, it has an extra weight: It's okay to love, but there's plenty of time for it. Why don't just enjoy life the best you can (and while you can) at its best? (Finally a fricking song that I can show my parents to tell them I'm not in love with anyone yet, and it's best to wait). Not into my "greatest" favorites, but I could love them winning or having a Top 5 place at the contest!
Ps. Btw, the song's music gives me vibes of a Mad Rat Dead OST, in a good way. Something you can put in the game as a mod and enjoy it :D
🇲🇹 Gaia Gambuzza "Diamonds in the Skies":
It looks like Malena's victory last year has really influenced the vibe of most songs for this year's JESC. Because Malta's modern electro-pop yet calm song really hits the spot to make its way through the contest with a banger of a melody and a good videoclip :D
Tumblr media
With something that reminds you of something between a good videogame and a futuristic space vibe, it is cool! The concept of Gaia being an ethereal entity from another dimension trying to communicate with the guests of the video and guide them to her world in a family-friendly "Stranger Things" way caught my attention. Like North Macedonia, not of my "greatest" favorites, but if they manage to win this year's JESC, this can make Destiny (winner of 2015 and representing Malta at ESC 2021) and me proud!
🇪🇸 Carlos Higes "Señorita":
Tumblr media
This meme could not be more FRICKING ACCURATE now in this JESC's eve. Let me explain:
UK has a banger of a song that could mean the end of the bad rap the Brits got at the contest in general, depicted by this phrase at Netflix's ESC movie:
Tumblr media
But remember who was next to Sam Ryder at the podium of this year's ESC besides Kalush Orchestra (Ukraine's singers and ESC 2022 winners), and had also EVERYTHING to win the contest like he did? The queen herself Chanel Terrero, from Spain. And guess what? SPAIN IS GONNA SEND A POTENTIAL WINNER AGAIN WITH THIS JESC!
Tumblr media
The video, with no music, looks like another revamp of "Reir" o "Palante", but THE SONG itself is something UNIQUE! It is SPANISH AF, with good vocals and a catchy rhythm. This is Spain saying "You loved Chanel, right? Well, guess what? We are not gonna drop that quality for this year's JESC!". As long as the live Finale version doesn't ruin this song, Carlos could be alongside María Isabel (winner of 2004) and give Spain not only their second JESC victory, but also their 2022 victory they really deserved.
Bottom line: "Lose My Head" is to "Space Man" like "Señorita" is to "Slo-Mo". And I can't debate with the JESC fandom seeing both songs at the Top 3, or at least one of them winning the victory its ESC equivalent couldn't have. This is my "chosen one" favorite, the one I would expect to win.
Wait for the next part, this is just starting!

🇺🇸 Ashkenazi Jews and Sephardic Jews are two major groups within the Jewish people, distinguished primarily by their geographic origins, traditions, and customs. Ashkenazim come from Central and Eastern Europe, from regions like Germany, France, and Austria, and in the medieval period, their religious and cultural traditions were influenced by Western philosophy and culture. In contrast, Sephardic Jews are descendants of those expelled from the Iberian Peninsula in 1492, with roots in Spain and Portugal. This group is characterized by a blend of Spanish and Arab influences, particularly in the case of the Andalusian Jews. Additionally, within the Sephardic group, there is a subcategory of Mizrahi Jews, hailing from Eastern regions such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, whose traditions are closer to those of the Babylonians. Despite these differences, all groups share the same religious foundation in the Torah and the study of the Talmud, although their customs and rituals vary, such as the way they read the Torah. Ashkenazim follow a tradition based on the Jerusalem Talmud, while Sephardim follow the Babylonian Talmud. These divisions reflect the rich diversity within the Jewish people, shaped by their dispersion and adaptation to different cultures throughout history.

#FEATURED Lágrimas de Sangre | Volver 🇪🇸 LDS is one of the most famous Spanish bands. Although generally catalogued as Hip Hop, their music is strongly influenced by #Rock and #Reggae, and performs on stage with live instruments, making the live show a truly engaging experience for the fans. They are a politically engaged band, often singing about social commentary, but also have a lighter side with several party anthems and “Feel-good” music. “Volver” is definitely the new hit of the Catalan band. #UbuntuFM #HipHop #Radio https://buff.ly/3R1GG4d https://one.ubuntu.fm/3ynjF3e

🇺🇸 Mexican writer Angelina Muñiz Huberman, 84 years old, was recently named a member of the prestigious Mexican Academy of Language. Since childhood, when her mother secretly revealed her Jewish heritage, Muñiz Huberman became deeply interested in her family's history and became one of the most prominent novelists and scholars on Sephardic Jewish topics and crypto-Judaism. Her work explores themes such as Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah, and Ladino, an ancient Judeo-Spanish dialect. Some of her well-known novels include "Dulcinea Encantada" (1992) and her recent work, "Los Esperandos", which tells the story of Sephardic pirates in the 17th century. In addition to her literary career, she pioneered Sephardic studies in Mexico and taught Hispano-Hebrew literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Throughout her life, she explored her Jewish heritage, which, like many other Sephardic Jews, was concealed to avoid persecution during the Spanish Inquisition. Muñiz Huberman has also been a representative of the Spanish exile and has worked on topics related to converso Jews and their influence on Mexican culture.
