It was night in India when the two satellites of the SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment) mission were launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center atop a PSLV-CA rocket. The two satellites separated from the rocket's final stage and entered a circular orbit at an altitude of about 475 kilometers. Another 24 experiments were launched on the same mission, but the SpaDeX satellites are the most important because they will serve to test the docking technologies necessary for the progress of the Indian space program.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to conclude 2024 with the launch of its pivotal Spadex mission, which aims to demonstrate satellite docking in space. The launch is scheduled for 9:58 pm on December 30, from the first launch pad at Sriharikota, India’s sole spaceport. Docking—where two satellites align and connect in space—is a crucial capability for future missions, including Chandrayaan-4 and the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
The Spadex mission will feature two small satellites: SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target). These satellites will align in the same orbit, reduce their distance, dock, transfer electrical power, and then separate. Post-separation, the satellites will continue operating their payloads for two years.
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C60) will launch the two 220 kg satellites into a 470 km circular orbit. Following the launch, the satellites will maintain a separation of 10 to 20 km, with the propulsion system on the Target satellite preventing them from drifting apart. Over time, the Chaser satellite will reduce the distance to the Target satellite to a mere 3 meters before docking.

SDX01, the Chaser satellite, is equipped with a high-resolution camera, while SDX02, the Target satellite, carries a multispectral payload for monitoring natural resources, along with a radiation monitor for space radiation analysis. Nel tardo pomeriggio di ieri, i due satelliti della missione SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment) sono stati lanciati dal centro spaziale Satish Dhawan, in India, su un razzo vettore PSLV-CA. I due satelliti si sono regolarmente separati dall'ultimo stadio del razzo e si sono immessi nell'orbita circolare a circa 475 chilometri di altitudine. Altri 24 esperimenti vari sono stati lanciati nella stessa missione ma i satelliti SpaDeX sono i più importanti perché serviranno a testare le tecnologie di attracco necessarie ai progressi nel programma spaziale indiano.
