"Weird Secret Friends" *Chapter 14*
Chapter 13
Chapter 15
This chapter literally took me all day, and it's kinda super long, but since I'm only going to 15 it had to be done. Also, I wanted to get a certain part and all the bullshit detail action needs to be written before we get there so I just kept writing to get there. Lulz.

*DUN DUN DUNNNN*
---------------------
The next thing you knew you were waking up in another room. This one was more lavish and beautiful; the sunset was peeking through green silk curtains with a matching chaise lounge. You were now in pink silk pajamas as opposed to a hospital gown, and you weren’t hooked up to near as many wires. Just a pack attached to your arm linked to your sides.
“What the…?” You cautiously crept out of bed, examining the room.
So many questions flew through your mind at that moment. How did you get here? Where exactly were you? Who the hell changed you while you were passed out? It was too much to imagine. You walked over to the full length mirror and examined yourself. You were still semi pale, but you looked pretty damn good for just having surgery this morning.
You walked back towards your bed where your phone was laying on the nightstand. You went to check your messages when you saw the date-- it had been three days. THREE DAYS?
“What the actual fuck--?” You muttered.
Were you in a Black Mirror episode? How did you lose three whole days of your life?! You began to panic, making you pace the room. Wasn’t there a button you could do? You quickly looked around the room for anything, but all you found was a TV remote.
“Oh are you fucking--” You started to curse the world when you saw a little drawing of a nurse on one of the buttons. You frantically pushed it until a girl who looked like she was a nurse out of a porno as opposed to a hospital came running in.
“Oh my god, I thought you were like, dying or something,” She rolled her eyes and twirled her hair like she was a teenage stereotype.
“Where the hell am I? Why am I---”
“Okay you need to like, chill babe,” Nurse Betty put her hands up. “
“I’m not your babe, mmkay pumpkin? We are not friends,” You pushed her hands down. “Now why don’t you get your little chart and explain to me what’s going on in the Twilight Zone?”
“Alright, well--” She whipped out a mini tablet from her scrubs and flipped through it. “You got here three days ago with an order to keep you in a medically induced coma-- Ooooh, wow that sounds like some soap opera shit. Where your organs harvested on the black market?”
“WHAT?” You grabbed the tablet. That DID sound like some soap opera shit. “You read the tablet, all it said was the details about the coma and then FILES SEALED.
“Can you-- unlock this, please?” You shoved the tablet back in her hands.
“Um no, you need a supervisor for that babe,”
“Can you please get someone to unlock this then, BABE?” Your eye began to twitch from stress.
“Yeah, sure I’ll try,” She shrugged and walked back out of the room. You continued to pace faster now, googling “HARVESTED ORGANS ON THE BLACK MARKET”, when a doctor came in wearing navy blue scrubs, looking like Derek Shepherd.
“Well hey there, beautiful,” He grinned at you.
“...What is happening?” You muttered, staring at him. He was gorgeous, you’d probably be more flustered if you weren’t so freaked out and pissed off.
“What kind of soap opera hospital is this?!” You scowled.
“Hey, just because we take care of ourselves around here doesn’t mean it’s Grey’s Anatomy up here,” He made a face.
“...Could’ve fooled me, McDreamy,”
“....Just because my name is Derek doesn’t mean I’m that tool,” He frowned.
“Oh my god you’re kidding me right?” You had to laugh at the irony.
“You’re probably just grumpy because you haven’t eaten for three days,” He patted your head. “How about a nice filet mignon?”
“Wha…?” You looked around the room in disbelief. “How about you tell me where I am and how I got here?”
“You’re at Whistling Pines Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Hartford Connecticut, Miss Y/N,”
“Connecticut?!” You gasped. “Sonny said it was just upstate New York. Jesus Christ he sent me out of state?!”
“Calm yourself,” Derek put a hand on your shoulder. “We’re basically on the state line, Mr. Carisi didn’t send you to Siberia,”
“...And why exactly was I brought here against my will?” You crossed your arms.
“Against your will?” He snorted. “Your paperwork says you requested to be out while you recovered so you wouldn’t be tempted to ask for pain meds or anything. Part of the detox, you understand,”
“Detox?” Your face scrunched. “Seriously? So...so now what, you escort me down to the padded room now that I’m healed?”
“No, no of course not,” He shook his head. “Our rehab rooms are much nicer than this. And yours is all ready for you,”
“....Yeah, alright,” You shrugged, looking around the room.
“Wonderful,” He gave you another 100 watt smile before opening the door and motioning you to follow him. You walked for a while through what seemed like a normal hospital wing, then you came to two large doors that said “REHABILITATION WING”.
Derek opened it and let you go through first, into a beautiful lobby. The walls were made of marble, there was a koi pond with a waterfall in the middle of it, sparkling water stations next to big leather chairs. It was like a spa.
“Wow...” You whispered as you admired it while you walked.
“Yes, I know,” He chuckled. “It’s quite impressive, isn’t it?”
“Yeah…” You began to feel guilty; how much was this costing Sonny? This place looked like it cost the down payment on a house to stay in. You followed Derek down a hallway that looked like a hotel room hallway more than a rehab center, until he stopped at a door labelled 312.
“Ah here we are,” He opened the door and let you go inside first once again. It was an even more lavish room than you woke up in. A nice king bed with fluffy pillows and silk comforters were covered with extra blankets if you needed them. There was a huge sofa in front of a large screen TV, and a little kitchenette with a small fridge, cabinets, a dishwasher, and a microwave.
“....Wow,” You continued to stare in awe at the luxurious amenities this place had.
“Indeed,” Derek smiled. “Now, the TV comes loaded with digital cable and all the streaming services. Our WIFI password is LIVELAUGHLOVE, the fridge is stocked with organic, healthy foods only, but if you’d like to request something you can give our front desk a ring,”
You just nodded as you checked out the room.
“Now,” He cleared his throat. “For the icky part,”
“...The icky part?” You sputtered with a sarcastic smile. “Where did you go to medical school, Sesame Street?”
“Ha ha,” He rolled his eyes. “You will need to stay in your room at all times unless it’s social time, or group time. We do have several common areas such as a pool and a gym, but you’ll need to schedule times to use them, you can’t just walk around on your own,”
“Ah,” You nodded. “So it is a prison, just a very nice prison,”
“It’s not a prison, Miss Y/N,” He shook his head. “Not for you, anyway,”
“Really? Because it sounds like--”
“Your cousin did pay for your residency here, but you’re not under a court order or anything so you’re not confined here. Most of our residents have to be here several months before they’re even allowed out of their rooms at all, you should consider yourself lucky,”
“...Right,” You rolled your eyes. “Where is my cousin, anyway?” You asked. “Is he back at the hospital in New York?”
“Excuse me?” He looked at you in confusion. “I’m not sure I understand,”
“Oh I guess it’s been a few days,” You thought out loud. “He must have gone home by now,”
“...Well I’d sure hope so,” He chuckled.
“So..” You took a seat on the couch. “What am I doing now, warden?”
“Well like I said, I can have food sent up to you if you’re hungry,” He explained as he handed you your own tablet. “We have these for you so you can browse our menu for food and amenities,”
“Mmmkay…”
“Tomorrow’s social time is at 10 am, and your group therapy is at noon,”
“..Uh huh,” You nodded as you absent mindedly flipped through the menu.
“It’s mandatory,” He added.
“...Right,”
“Wonderful,” He beamed. “Now your bathroom is there, obviously,” He nodded to a door on the other side of the room. “It has a shower with three different pressures, and a spa bathtub. I recommend you take a long hot bath and relax, the first night is usually the hardest to get used to.
“Right…”
“Alright well I’ll leave you to it,” He nodded at you with another dreamy smile.
He walked out and left you to your own devices. You walked over to the drawers and pulled them out. They were full of your clothes, how did they get these so fast? It was so bizarre all of this happened while you were out, it really did seem like some kind of episode out of Dynasty or something.
You decided to call Sonny and get some things sorted out. You picked up your phone and dialed his number and let it ring.
“Oh hey...you, how you feelin’?”
“I’m good,” You went and sat on the bed. “How are you feeling?”
“Me? I’m good,”
“Really? Not sore or anything?”
“What? OH-- Yeah, y’know, of course, obviously,”
“...Thanks so much for this, Sonny. It’s gorgeous here,”
“Anytime….sweetie,”
“Is um, is Rafael doing better? Do you know?”
“Uh he’s...he’s fine, I’m sure,”
“...Well that’s good,”
“I’ll be up there next week to see you, you hang in there okay?”
“...Yeah, alright,”
“Night darlin’, you sleep well. I love you,”
“Love you too,”
Sonny hung up the phone and glanced over at Rafael who was busy writing his closing arguments for their case tomorrow.
“....Who was that?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Niece,” He lied.
“Mmm,”
“...How are you feelin’, by the way Barba?”
“Carisi, we’re not discussing anything personal, ever again. I told you that,” He grumbled, not looking up from his desk. He winced in pain every so often when he pulled on his stitches while writing.
“...Right,” He nodded sadly. He did feel guilty about all of this, but he knew in a few weeks it wouldn’t matter. You’d both forget about each other and move on, it was for the best.
--------
The next day you woke up and felt this overwhelming sense of dread. It was like everything had finally caught up to you, all the memory of how you got here came back to you. You missed Rafael almost immediately, Sonny’s words about how you had traumatized him rang in your head.
You wanted so desperately to call him and apologize, tell him how you would have never hurt him on purpose, and that all you wanted to do was make it up to him-- but you knew you had no way of doing that, and there was nothing you could do about it.
Your tablet began to go off, alarms for SOCIAL TIME were set on it. You tried to turn it off, but apparently a counselor had to do it when you arrived. Sneaky bastards. You sighed and pulled on some PJ pants, trying to ignore the blaring sound. You stomped out of your room and down the hall, down some stairs to a huge room labelled “REC ROOM.”
“Welcome Y/N!” A bright and cheery nurse came over and greeted you. “We have lots of activities for you here,” She began to show you around. “We have arts and crafts, several board games, and the Cards Against Humanity rounds get quite rowdy!”
“...Right,” You nodded softly, feeling more and more hopeless as you saw all the other “residents” mingling-- and by mingling, meaning most of them were walking around like soulless zombies. Was this your life now?
----
One Week Later
“Hey…” You saw Rafael laying down in front of you, reaching out for your hand. You took it, not believing this was real.
“I love you, Y/N…” He smiled at you, his green eyes sparkling.
“I love you too Rafael..”
You shot up in bed, it happened again. You had been having the same dream ever since you had gotten to Whistling Pines. It felt so real, especially when you touched his hand. And you always woke up alone, stuck in your prison. Never to see Rafael ever again; It was torture. No matter how fancy the prison was, it was still a prison. You looked at the clock on your bedside table- 3:30 am. You wondered what Rafael was doing at that moment-- well, probably sleeping, duh. Or maybe he was up late, working on law stuff.
You wondered if he was thinking about you, if he ever thought about you. He didn’t seem angry the last time you saw him, in fact you were pretty sure you remembered him holding you and crying. Well, like Sonny said he was probably just upset having to see someone like that again. But-- something inside told you that you didn’t leave on bad terms. Maybe you had been too quick to just delete and block his number. But it was too late to do anything about that now. You laid back down and cried yourself back to sleep for the fifth time that night.
=============
Two weeks later
Sonny drove up to Hartford early Friday morning, hoping to get back to the city that night. He signed in at the front desk, muttering obscenities under his breath. He paced the lobby waiting for you, trying to keep his calm. Finally you emerged from the big double doors: You were dressed in a t-shirt that used to be tight, but now it draped on your shoulders. Your hip hugger jeans were more like men’s jeans, hanging off your pelvis. Your hair was pulled into a messy ponytail and you had no makeup on. You walked over to Sonny who crossed his arms at the sight of you.
“Hey, Sunshine…” He pulled you into a tight hug, your face barely moved into a small smile.
“Can we talk?” He asked as he led you to one of the leather couches.
“Sure,” You nodded like a robot as you sat next to him.
“So Sunshine,” He sighed. “They tell me you haven’t uh, been doin’ so hot,”
“Oh, have they?” You mumbled, playing with a hole in your jeans.
“Yeah they said you’re not eating, you skip the group, you won’t talk to anybody,” He put a hand on your knee. “Is everything okay? Is it your new liver? The diabetes kicking yer ass?”
“...No, I’m fine,” You shrugged feebly.
“....Seriously?” He removed his hand, his soft tone gone. “So, nothing’s wrong with you physically? You’re just being a brat?”
“Excuse me?” You suddenly blinked in surprise.
“Here I came up here because I was worried somethin’ was really wrong with you, like you were rejecting the donation or-- or the trauma was too much, but you’re tellin’ me you just won’t cooperate?” He snapped at you.
“...What do you want me to say, Sonny? Sorry?” You snarked back.
“I want you to tell me why!” He tried not to yell but this was ridiculous. “Do you know how expensive this place is?!”
“Oh wow,” You scoffed. “Well I’m sorry my recovery is so expensive for you, Son,”
“It’s not even recovery, Y/N! You’re-- You’re just laying around here like a fuckin’ angsty teen!” He barked. “Why aren’t you trying? Don’t you wanna get outta here and get back to your life?”
“Maybe I don’t!” You yelled and stood up. “Maybe I don’t care about getting out of here, or not. There’s no point anymore,”
“What?” Sonny furrowed his brows. “Why not?”
“...Because,” You looked down at the floor.
“Oh for fuck’s sake…” Sonny threw up his hands, finally standing up himself. “Is this about Barba, really Y/N? You knew him for a few fuckin’ days, gimme a fuckin BREAK,”
“He was wonderful to me, Sonny! He was wonderful and loving and caring and YOU made me go off on him, and then I--” You paused, tears caught in your throat. “I fucking traumatized him. I hurt him so badly he didn’t even want to see me when i was dying,”
“I mean-- how bad of a person am I?!” You tried not to break down in the lobby. “I shouldn’t be allowed to be around anyone anymore, I just destroy things. Hurt people. I shouldn’t be around anyone,”
“Oh Jesus Christ,” Sonny sighed. “You need to stop, alright? If you actually tried to get better, you wouldn’t--”
“I don’t want to get better!!!!” You flat out stomped your foot, not caring about making a scene now.
“Y/N, tough love time. You need to get your shit together and forget about Barba, alright? I can’t keep paying for you to stay here--” He put both hands on your shoulders.
“So let me out,” You glared at him.
“....And if I let you out, are you going to stay sober?” He gave you a suspicious look.
“Nope,” You said with a smirk.
“Y/N come the fuck on,” He threw up his hands.
“What?” You crossed your arms. “I’m being honest. So either you keep wasting your money here, or let me go,”
“And what, let you kill yourself?” He asked angrily.
“...Maybe,” You muttered.
“Sunshine, come here--” Sonny went to wrap you in a hug, his t-shirt caught up on yours causing it to pull up on his torso. Your eyes went wide when you caught sight of it, letting go of him.
“....Where’s your scar?” You blinked in disbelief, trying to wrap your head around what you were seeing.
“What?” He began to panic.
“Your scar,” You pulled your t-shirt to reveal your own scar from the transplant. “You should have one,”
“Oh, Um--” Sonny began to rack his brain for an explanation, but your brain was moving faster.
“.....You didn’t give me part of your liver, did you?” You pulled away from him.
“Uh well--” He sighed “Not exactly, no,”
“Then who did?” You eyed him accusingly.
“They got you an anonymous--”
“Oh don’t even give me that shit, Sonny,” You stopped him. “This-- this whole thing, when I got here. It felt so much like, like a set up. A soap opera plot,”
“A soap opera?” Sonny laughed. “Come on Sunshine, don’t--”
“Why did you ship me here so fast, Sonny?” You asked, your brain now on a roll.
“What?” He half laughed. “So that you could get started early--”
“No,” You stopped him. “You could have just let me come here on my own, CONSCIOUS,”
“Well I just wanted you to skip the DT’s--” He tried to think of a defense.
“DT’s don’t happen to you if you get drunk ONCE, Sonny!” You raised your voice.
“Well how was I supposed to--” He looked around nervously.
“Who really gave me their liver, Sonny?” You narrowed your eyes.
“I told you, I don’t--” He began to lie again.
“I’ll look it up,” You threatened, making his eyes go wide.
“Y-You can’t do that,” He protested.
“Why wouldn’t you want me to?” You challenged him.
“...Because--”
“Rafael did, didn’t he?” You weren’t letting him think of any more lies.
“Look Y/N, he just wanted to help you out so that you wouldn’t die, like his dad. He couldn’t save him so he saved you. Doesn’t that sound like him?”
You had to admit, it really did. But why lie about it?
“So why didn’t you tell me that, Sonny? Why tell me you did it? Why didn’t you just tell me he did it to be nice, and not that he hated me?”
“I never said he hated you--”
“If you lied to me about that, what else have you been lying to me about?” You put your hands on your hips.
“What?”
“Oh my god…” You started to remember your recurring dream. “It was real, it was real. I know it was real!”
“...What was real?” His eyebrows furrowed.
“I keep having this dream where Rafael is across from me lying on a table, and he tells me that he loves me. And I know that happened I know it did,” You explained.
You were absolutely sure of it now. So many thoughts were running through your mind, you hated that you didn’t remember any of this before.
“What?” Sonny laughed again. “Sunshine it’s just a dream, don’t you think you would remember something like that?”
“They...they gave me something before I went into the OR,” You looked off into nowhere as you tried desperately to recall that morning. “The nurse called it…’giggle juice’,”
“Giggle juice?” Sonny rolled his eyes.
“Did you make them give me that too?!” You went for his collar, but a nurse came out of nowhere to hold you back.
“Wha who whoa, Sunshine calm down,” Sonny waved the nurse off of you. “I got her, thanks ma’am,”
“I didn’t tell them to give you anything,” He said softly.
“Yeah, just to keep me out for three days so I wouldn’t ever see Rafael before you sent me here,” You accused him.
“...Not true…” He shook his head.
“Why wouldn’t you want me to talk to him, Sonny?” Tears choked your throat.
“He didn’t want to talk to you--”
“Bullshit!” You stomped your foot, eyeing the nurse who had her eye on you in case you lost it on Sonny again.
“Bullshit, were you scared he was going to tell me what you were really doing? That you were trying to keep us apart?” Tears began dripping from your cheeks. You couldn’t believe this was happening, you couldn’t believe you could have been with Rafael this entire time.
“No!” He protested, his eyes darting back and forth. “No, I--”
“I don’t believe you!” You pushed him, the nurse stepped forward but you put your hands up in defeat. “You’re keeping him from me right now, aren’t you?”
“What?”
“That’s why you sent me so far, he has no idea where I am, and he wants to know doesn’t he? He wasn’t traumatized by my ‘incident’, he’s traumatized he lost me!” You hated that you cried when you got angry, it made you so much less intimidating.
“Traumatized is a strong word, Y/N…” Sonny rolled his eyes.
“Y’know what Sonny,” You shook your head while you wiped your eyes. “I’ll make you a deal. You bring Rafael here, and I’ll try to get better,”
“...I can’t,” He looked at the floor.
“Wha--Are you serious?” You half laughed sarcastically. “You’d rather me rot in here than--”
“I don’t know where he is, Y/N,” He looked up at you seriously.
“...What?” You asked, not wanting to know the answer.
“He…” He rubbed the back of his neck. “He left,”
“What do you mean ‘he left’?” You air quoted left.
“He went on some campaign trail, Hilary I think. He took off across the country, I literally have no idea where he is right now,” He explained.
“Why would he do that?” You asked.
“I don’t know, he said he had to get out of the city--” He shrugged.
“And you couldn’t imagine why?” You gave him a knowing look.
“Oh puh-lease Y/N, he’s not a drama queen like you--” He stopped, thinking about it. “Okay well he might be a drama queen but--”
“You can call him,” You pointed to his pocket.
“I can’t,” He looked down at the ground once again.
“WHY NOT?!” You were getting fed up with him.
“He was….he was super pissed at me for keeping you apart, alright? You’re right. He...he changed his number when he took off, he wants nothing to do with me,”
“So he’s just...gone?” Your voice cracked.
“Sunshine, I promise you. In a few weeks you won’t care about him, and you’re gonna wanna get out of here,”
“Why, you're gonna start adding memory pills to my regiment too?” You scoffed with angry tears in your voice.
“Jesus,” He rolled his eyes. “No, because you’re 22 and you can fall in and out of love like that,” He snapped his fingers.
“No I won’t,” You shook your head. “You’re gonna have to let me out of here or I’ll die in here,”
“God you’re such a--” Sonny sighed in frustration. “I can get them to get you to eat, y’know that right?”
“Do it!” You dared him. “Start treating me like some kind of mental patient, control my life like you think you need to,”
“...I can’t deal with this,” He waved his hands and started to walk away. “I’ll be back in a few weeks, I’m sure you’ll be over this by then,”
“Don’t count on it,” You stomped back into the ward.
-----------------
A week later
You let the night nurse into your room, she brought your meds and a nightly snack.
“Well, are you excited for tomorrow?” She asked, making conversation.
“...What’s tomorrow?” You asked as your downed your pills.
“Your last day!” She smiled.
“...What?” You quirked an eyebrow.
“Well, honey you’re not here on a court order or probation, and your cousin only paid for 30 days. So, you’re leaving tomorrow!”
“You’re just...you’re just letting me go??” You asked in disbelief.
“You’re not happy about that? I’m sure we could talk to your--” She started.
“No!” You stopped her. “No, No I’m totally excited, ready to get back to real life,”
“Good!” She smiled and patted your head. “Make sure you’re all packed, we’ve already filled this room once you leave,”
“...Of course you have,” You rolled your eyes.
She left and you began to frantically pack, ready to get out of here as fast as possible. You would find Rafael on your own, you knew you could.
----------
Sonny’s phone went off while he was out on a call, he saw it was Whistling Pines so he excused himself from the scene and answered it.
“Hello?”
“Yes, Mir. Carisi? This is Sylvia at Whistling Pines, we were just checking on Miss Y/N,”
“....Why would you be checking on her? Don’t you have her?”
“...No sir, she checked out a few days ago,”
“WHAT?!”
“Well it had been 30 days and you had only paid for a month--”
“So you just let her leave?! Why would you do that?!”
“Well sir, for one she’s a grown woman who’s a law abiding citizen, she wasn’t committed here by any kind of law enforcement. And like I said you only paid--”
“For a month,” He growled. “That’s all that matters to you people, isn’t it?”
“Well sir, this is a very expensive--”
“Where did she go?”
“What do you mean where did she go? She left with you,”
“Uh she sure as hell did NOT,”
“...Well she got in a car with a man…”
“Oh my god,” Sonny almost dropped the phone. “I swear to God if something happens to her because of you people I will sue you SO fast--”
“Okay no need to get hysterical,” She began to panic. “Why don’t you just come here and we’ll figure it out…”
“No I think you’ve done enough,” He growled before hanging up on her.
Where the hell had you gone? And with who?!

Sinfully Nalu Prompt suggestions.
Here are suggestions for the Sinfully NaLu event prompts! If you want to use one, let me know and I can cross it out if you want. If none of these work for you but you still want an idea for the prompt, let me know and I can try to help!
1. Biting/Fangs/Teeth: Now that Natsu and Lucy are together, Natsu has taken a liking to “marking” Lucy by leaving bite marks all over her. Though she enjoys it, it is a source of constant teasing from the other FT ladies whenever they bathe together. So she devises a way to get back at Natsu and leave some marks of her own. With research help from Levy, Lucy finds a spell that temporarily gives her fangs like Natsu. Next time they are alone together, they take great pleasure in marking each other up.
2. Biting/Fangs/Teeth: While fixing Natsu’s favorite spicy meal, Lucy spills some on herself after he sneaks up on her. Before she can get mad, Natsu is already licking the mess off of her. Liking the taste, he decides to make a meal out of Lucy instead.
3. Public Sex: (Post Series) Fairy Tail is participating in the Grand Magic games yet again and are doing well. Natsu and Lucy are participating this year and after a few successful wins, they decide to celebrate in the team locker room.
4. Public Sex: During a stay at a fancy onsen,Lucy and Natsu indulge in a night of drinking at the bar after a dip in the hotspring. Unsurprisingly, Lucy becomes a bit tipsy and starts becoming extra flirty and handsy with Natsu. So he decides to end their night of drinking early and take Lucy back to their room to give her what she wants. Or he tries too but the place is big and gets lost. Lucy loses her patience and kisses Natsu against a wall and says she can’t wait anymore and they could go at it right then and there if they need to. Natsu is surprised but thrilled at her suggestion. Since it's late and the hallway is deserted, they go for it and Natsu takes her against the wall there.
5. Public Sex: Natsu and Lucy sneak off during a break at one of her book signings to have some fun at the back of the book store.
6. Public Sex: After starting the latest bar fight at the guild, Natsu is tasked with cleaning the FT pool as punishment. He manages to drag Lucy along to help him. But they can only see each other scantily clad and working up a sweat for so long before they go at it right in the pool.
7. Public Sex: (Modern AU) Natsu and Lucy are enjoying a comic convention that they go to every year. Dressed up in cosplay the two wander the main hall and get quite a bit of attention due to their sexy cosplay. When Lucy gets a little too much attention, Natsu drags her off the main floor and finds a quiet place for a quickie.
8. Public Sex: When Lucy tells Natsu he can pick their next date location she knew she was asking for trouble and he confirms her fears by taking her to a nude beach. When she realizes he picked the location specifically to fluster her she decides two can play at that game and the two tease each other the entire time they are there. They of course get carried away and sneak somewhere hidden to go at it before they get caught. Afterward Lucy realizes that she really had fun there and is open to returning. Also works under the Secret prompt. (Old Prompt)
9. Dirty Talk/Texting Natsu and Lucy have been together for a couple of months now and can’t keep their hands off each other. It gets so bad that Lucy’s friends need to drag her away for some girl time at a spa/onsen. NaLu secretly keeps in touch via text and face time throughout Lucy’s trip but things escalate when a drunken and flirty Lucy starts sending Natsu risque pics and texts throughout her time there. Their escapades end with a video chat session that turns steamy. (Old Prompt)
10. Dirty talk/Sexting: After nearly destroying half a town during a mission, Natsu is brought before the magic council for the standard lecture. During which he mostly ignores them and texts Lucy under the table. To tease her, he makes the topic dirty and about the things they’ll do together when he gets home. But she takes him by surprise by making the conversation even dirtier and soon Natsu has another problem under the table.
11. Dirty Talk/Sexting: Lucy and Natsu want to spice things up their sex life and they think adding dirty talk will help. They both do their own research on what they think sexy dirty talk will sound like (Lucy from the library/Levy, Natsu from the older FT guys). After their research they get together to put it to the test with… interesting results.
12. Dirty Talk/Sexting: Lucy is away on a week long photo shoot while Natsu is at home recovering from an injury. When he complains to her that he is bored, she decides to start sending him pictures of her in various sexy outfits she is wearing for the shoot. The messages between them become sexier and devolve into Natsu telling her what he wants to do to her and Lucy sending even more sexy/nude pics to instigate him (Optional: Lucy has a lady friend help her take the pics.)
13. Wedding night/Wedding: Natsu and Lucy’s dream wedding is not going as expected. Natsu sees Lucy too early, the half the guests are delayed by a storm, there are issues with the food ect. So Natsu and Lucy find an empty room at the venue (or wherever the wedding takes place) and have a quiet moment together and are just glad they have each other. The tender moment quickly turns mischievous when one of them suggests a quickie to take the edge off. They are of course accidentally caught on camera by the wedding photographer.
14. Wedding Night/Wedding: NaLu have just gotten married and have just arrived at their hotel room to “celebrate”. Throughout the day, Natsu has been teasing Lucy that she looked great in her dress but he was going to burn it off her once they are alone and to his surprise she does encourage him to burn it off. Revealing that there was a spell on the dress that burned it off without hurting her and that she was wearing flame themed lingerie underneath. Now the fun can really begin. (Lucy can switch out her actual wedding dress with this one before the scene takes place. I doubt she would burn the real thing.)
15. Snowed in/Trapped: Natsu and Lucy are stuck at home after several days of heavy snow. With Natsu crawling up the wall from boredom, Lucy makes a suggestion. With the help of Virgo and Natsu’s magic, they use the excess snow to create an impromptu hot spring in their backyard. As a challenge from Natsu, they two streak nude across the rest of the snow in their yard to get to the spring. An extra excuse to cuddle for warmth once they get there. Which of course leads to other things.
16. Snowed In/Trapped: A huge snow storm has blocked all the roads and has made a mess on the Dragneel household, so Natsu and Lucy spend their morning clearing the surrounding snow. Natsu of course starts a snowball fight that ends with him putting snow down Lucy’s shirt and her using Aquarius in retaliation. Now both thoroughly soaked, the two head inside, strip down, and must think of some creative ways to “warm up”.
17. Marking/Mating/Ritual: An attempt to get Natsu’s DS mating cycle under control backfires when the spell that is supposed to calm him down, just gives his mating urges to Lucy instead. Now he must tend to her every need for 72 hours until the spell passes.
18. Marking/Mating/Ritual: After Lucy and Natsu get married, they are offered a rare honor by the Celestial Spirit King to perform a special mating ritual in the Celestial World. During this ritual their souls temporarily merge and it's supposed to be a deep bonding experience. Other future benefits is that they can share magic when they need to and can sense where the other is any time. They are given their own special villa to stay at where they can perform the ritual and not have to worry about their energy draining or losing time while in the Celestial World.
19. Starting a Family: (Edolas) Lucy Ashley is pregnant with her and Natsu Doragion’s first child and her sex drive is through the roof. So before he goes on his next solo mission, she is sure to get as much out of him as she can. He is more than happy (and a bit scared) to help.
20. Starting a Family: Natsu and Lucy have been in a friends with benefits relationship for quite some time, too afraid of ruining their friendship if they were to take things further. But when Natsu gets Lucy pregnant, they must figure out what their new relationship is going to be and how they are going to start a family together.
21. Massage/Masseuse: (Modern AU): Lucy has been visiting a massage parlor frequently lately (either for stress relief or for Physical Therapy). But mostly she goes there to flirt with her favorite masseuse, Natsu. He likes to flirt back too but attempts to be professional about it. Until eventually the sexual tension between them snaps and they go at it then and there. (Roles can be flipped)
22. Massage/Masseuse: When Natsu takes a bad hit during a mission, he needs healing ointment rubbed onto his body regularly for a week. His girlfriend Lucy is happy to help him with this and they both indulge in a Nurse/Patient role-play they’ve been wanting to try.
23. Massage/Masseuse (Minor Hero’s/Edens Zero crossover): Lucy and Natsu are visiting the Edens Zero crew on their ship. When the crew becomes preoccupied with something, they encourage Natsu and Lucy to indulge in the bath and massage room. Which they gladly do. After their bath the two head to the massage room where Natsu plans on giving Lucy the rub down of her life!
24. Magic: (Whip) Lucy has gotten a new electrical whip. When Natsu puts them in the red again for being too destructive on a mission, she decides he needs to be punished. So next time they are intimate, she introduces the whip in the bedroom (Natsu is into this. She uses it to tie him up, lightly shock/stimulate him, and spanking (or whatever the writer wants.)
25. Magic: (X-Ray Glasses) Lucy gives Natsu magic glasses before a mission, telling him it's important that he wears them and it will help find what they are looking for. What he doesn’t know is that they are actually Magic X-Ray Glasses. As revenge for an earlier prank done on her, Lucy enchants them to only work on her so Natsu can see through her clothes throughout the mission. But he can’t do anything about it with their teammates there (glasses could also be magically stuck to his face for a while), so he has to suffer his mate intentionally teasing him throughout the day until they finally get some alone time at an inn, where he pounces her and they both get some much needed release.
26. Magic: (Pleasure) NaLu are exposed to a “Pleasure” spell from a dark mage during a mission. They are forced to leave the dark mage in the care of their teammates as they scurry off to find a secluded area where they can work off the spell. (Pleasure spell like Laracade’s, that sends a person into a heightened pleasured state until they reach completion with someone.) (Old Prompt)
27. Magic: (Clones) When Lucy makes the mistake of asking Cana what to get Natsu for his birthday, Cana crudely reveals that she has a new multiply card that can multiply anyone she touches with it and she convinces Lucy it would be a great bedroom surprise for Natsu. (Can also be given to Natsu) (Old Prompt)
28. Magic: (Transform) NaLu are at home practicing transformation magic for a mission. Once they get the hang of it they start having some fun with it. But once one (or both) of them find a transformation that the other finds too desirable for the other to ignore, the real fun can begin. (Bunny or Cat girl Lucy? Dragon Lord Natsu? Whatever the writer wants!) (Old Prompt)
29. Magic: (Invisibility) Natsu convinces Lucy to use a leftover invisibility potion to help him with some pranks at the guild. They quickly realize what other sexual mischief they can get up to at the guild now that they won’t get caught.
30. Magic: (Unison Raid) While Natsu and Lucy are having an intense intimate moment, they activate a unison raid by accident. But instead of causing destruction, it amplifies everything they are feeling together.

New York Hustle // Chapter Seven
Just when I’m done doing the dishes I hear my phone go off in the other room. I put the towel away and walk into my room. I grab the phone from my nightstand where I left it earlier. It’s a message from an unknown number. Unknown: Yoo McClane Unknown: Survived the night? A bright smile appears on my face as I save the number under Nero. Me: I did. How bout u? Nero: Never been better Nero: Listen I don’t know if you r interested in basketball but me and the guys watching the game later Nero: If u wanna join I could come and pick u up Me: Sure I’d love that Nero: Okay great I’ll pick u up at 6:30 I lock my phone and let myself fall backwards onto my mattress, my smile got even wider than before. I need to tell someone about this. I grab my purse and put on my sneakers. I leave the apartment but leave behind a note for my brother. I cross the street and walk to the building Hannah lives in. I press the doorbell next to the name tag that says "Scott". “Hello?”, I hear after a few seconds from the other side of the line. It’s the voice of Lele. “Heyy, it’s me.”, in the next moment the door buzzes, I push it open with my shoulder. “Bellaaa!”, I hear a little boy's voice yell. I run up the stairs with a smile on my face. When I finally arrive on the third floor I see the precious little face of Hannah's little brother. “Quentin!”, I say happy. He runs at me and throws his arms around my thighs. I ruffle through his blond locks. “How are you Champ?”, I ask as we walk back into the apartment. He tells me about the game he had earlier today and how he made four touchdowns. “That’s great! You’re gonna play in the NFL one day, I can tell already:”, I say as we enter the kitchen area. Quentin answers with an even brighter smile. “How are you sweetie?”, Lele asks me but she’s focused on whatever she’s cooking right now. All I can say is that it smells delicious. “I’m good.”, I pick up one of the drawings that Quentin made and left it on the kitchen table. “I didn’t know that Forrest wanted to visit New York.”, she says and turns around to face me. “It wasn’t planned, he came to lecture me.”, I say with a laugh. “But we came clean this morning.” “Yeah he told me.”, Lele steps behind the chair I’m sitting in and starts to go through my hair with her hands. “You know he meant well right?”, she asks with a soft voice. “I know he did but at that moment it really hurt my feelings.”, I admit, Lele sighs and goes back to the pans on the stove. “Well, they all love you. You know that” “I know they do. I mean why wouldn’t they.”, I say sarcastically. Lele laughs and shakes her head. “Bella?”, I hear Hannah’s voice from her room. “Hannah I need advice.”; Hannah opens her door wider. “Then come right into Hannah Scotts therapy session.”, I laugh and walk over to her. “So what’s up?”, she asks as she closes the door behind her. “Okay don’t freak out but I met this guy.”, Hannah's eyes widen “Stop! Don’t you dare!”, I say knowing what’s going to happen next. “Finally!”, Hannah says with a bright smile and sits down on her desk chair. “It’s been so long.”, she sighs. “Not really, it’s been a little over a year.”, I correct her. “Long enough.”, Hannah says with raised eyebrows. I roll my eyes and do something that I’ve tried to avoid for so long. I think about my Ex-Boyfriend. Nick was a really, well let’s say unique, guy. He tried to be special like he used to say how different he was from the other boys and that he doesn't care what they do and think. That wasn’t at all the truth. Nick would do anything to get more popular than he already is. When he got more famous he’d started to treat every one of his old friends, I included, like shit. Suddenly I feel a soft pillow hit my face. “Scofield, you alive?”, Hannah asks worriedly. “Yeah sorry.”, I say and shake my head to get rid of the thought of Nick. “I zoned out.” “So, tell me everything.”, Hannah says, knowing what I was thinking off. I tell her everything that happened between me and Nero. The first time we met at King, the meeting in the bar and diner and finally about the kiss on the cheek and give back the exact same words he said. Hannahs's eyes glow while listening to the story. Finally, I tell her about the ‘date’ we have later. Hannah asks so many questions about his character and his looks that my head starts to hurt. “And he’ll pick you up later?”, Hannah asks for the thousandth time. “Do you know what you’re gonna wear?”, I look down at the cloth I’m currently wearing. “What’s wrong with this outfit?”, I ask confused. “Nothing, but you still should change before you meet him again.”, she says and walks over to her dresser. “Let’s see, what’s cute but not too much for the first date.” “It’s not a date!”, I say a little louder. Hannah rolls her eyes at me. “Still not a reason to not look cute.”, I give up and watch her dig deeper and deeper through the drawers. “But make it comfy at least. If we’re watching the game I don’t wanna sit there in skinny jeans for two hours.”, Hannah goes through the cloth hanging in front of her. “Okay, then you’re just gonna wear mom jeans with a white top.”, Hannah says and turns around, looking for my approval. I nod because it does sound like a good outfit for tonight. “you can wear my new Nike shoes if you want. They’d go great with the look.”, she says while throwing the jeans and the top onto the bed. “If you don’t need them.”, I say and take a look in the mirror. “Wanna have a face hour?”, Hannah asks with a happy face. A Face-Hour is simply an hour of a home spa. Trust me, it does wonders. Three hours have passed off us doing a long ass face routine and watching Friends. “Do you want to wear make-up tonight?”. Hannah asks as we watch Ross say the wrong name at the altar. “No, but I’ll put on some mascara.”; I say and get up from the bed. When I’m done I grab my purse, the cloth, and the shoes I want to wear later. “I’ll go and get ready.”, I say and kiss Hannah on the cheek as she continues to watch Friends. “Are you gonna shave?”, Hannah asks with a smirk. “Hannah I just met the guy.”, I say and open the door. “That wasn’t the question.”, she says still smirking. “Hannah!” “So that’s a yes?”, her eyebrows are raised as she waits for the answer. “Shut up.”, I say and close the door behind me but I still hear the laughter coming from the other side.

Love is a Battlefield
Book: The Royal Romance
Pairing: Liam x MC (Marcella)
Rating: PG; combat training scenes; suggestive language
Summary: Marcella wants to combat train with Liam, but he's not so sure if it's a good idea. Will the Queen be able to keep up with the King? Or will she show him exactly what she's made of?
Disclaimer: Characters belong to Pixleberry Studios.
Note: A few things: So, the training session that Liam and MC had left me wanting more. And with the multiple attacks ,I felt like MC should be training frequently to defend herself (cuz lord knows the royal guard sucks). Then when the boutique fight happened MC was a total badass and in MY mind she'd been training all along. Then, I watched Mr. and Mrs. Smith the other night and this idea was born. (Excuse the title; my last 2 fics have been 80's song titles for some reason LOL).

Liam couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you certain this is what you want? Please tell me you’re not serious.”
“What, afraid to get your ass kicked…by a woman?”
He narrowed his eyes. “Are you calling me a coward?”
She smirked. “I don’t know, Your Majesty, am I?”
“Marcella, I couldn’t possibly...” he replied feeling awkward. She put her hands on her hips, tilting her head dubiously. “I mean, I have a lifetime of training and...” She folded her arms, pursing her lips in annoyance. “That is to say…I don’t want you to get…hurt.”
He realized how foolish he sounded as soon as the words left his mouth. Since the attacks on their lives Marcella made it a point to combat train as frequently as their schedule allowed, practicing and sparring at least once a week with the royal guards, Mara, and even sometimes Olivia. She had proven herself to be quite capable in everything she did, always rising to the occasion, and fighting was no exception.
She snorted, “Oh my god, Liam. I’m not made out of porcelain, you know. Besides, who better for me to practice with? You can sharpen your moves, it'll be great exercise, and it sure beats couples' therapy.”
Liam looked at her incredulously. It was clear she wasn’t backing down; he could see the determination in her eyes.
Liam frowned slightly considering her words. “Very well, then. But, I will not go easy o--”
Before he could finish his sentence Marcella had launched her attack. Her first blow came in low and Liam moved on instinct alone, half-turning to defend his groin while deflecting her foot away from his abdomen. He dodged the high punch to his face, but was caught off guard when she hooked her foot around his ankle and yanked him off his feet. Liam hit the floor, his skin slapping the mat, winded from the attack. He laid there, a deer in headlights. What just happened?!
“First rule of fighting. Expect the unexpected!” she smugly remarked offering him a hand up.
He looked up at her with a look of amusement before grabbing her wrist, “Really? I thought the first rule of fighting is to never underestimate your opponent?” In an instant, Liam pressed his foot into her stomach and tossed Marcella over his head. She rolled to her feet like a ninja as Liam got up.
“Not bad. Your landings need work, though.” She quipped.
“I fear I must make you regret that.”
“Bring it on.”
Marcella bounced slightly on the balls of her feet, raising her arms in a defensive stance. Across from her Liam mirrored her stance.
“Ready?” she asked, giving him a small smile.
Liam returned the smile. “Whenever you are.”
They swiftly nodded at each other in acknowledgement. The two locked eyes, circling each other, waiting for the other to strike first.
“What are you waiting for? An invitation? Are you going to attack or not?” she called out to him.
“Ladies’ first,” he replied back, smirking.
In blinding speed, Marcella propelled herself forward hurling a combination of strikes, each move rolling naturally into the next. Snapping into defense mode, Liam’s body jerked from one direction to another, barely evading the assault to his physique. She was coming in all directions, leaving him very little room to counter-attack. Until Liam saw his opening, sending his fist sailing toward her torso. In a blur, Marcella grabbed his arm pulling him toward her. Before he knew it, she thrust into his hips, ducked, and used his momentum to flip him over her shoulder and onto the mat. ‘Damn.’
“Again? She asked, the quirk of her lips a restrained smirk.
It didn’t take him long to get used to her fighting rhythm. She was an impulsive fighter; unpredictable, which was good when facing life or death where you either strike fast or die, strategy be damned. She wasn’t as strong as he, but she was fast; inhumanly fast, and agile. He admired her grace, her boldness, and her ferocity. She was like a tiger, picking her target and pouncing in a blink of an eye, aiming for vitals and pressure points to take down her opponent quickly. Liam was impressed. His wife was a formidable opponent and he found it extremely sexy.
They lunged at each other, executing a simultaneous tornado of movements. Each punch was dodged and each kick was blocked. Liam went on the offensive, sticking jabs and kicks at the holes he had noticed in her defenses. She laughed in amusement at his new found boldness, trying to use new tactics, appreciating the new challenge. Her heart pounded in her chest, blood thundering through her, she felt the pulse in her neck. Her body glistened with sweat, heat flushing her skin. Adrenaline surging, pushing her even harder.
“Again!” she commanded, wiping the sweat from her forehead with her arm and looking at him expectantly; poised, ready to strike, possessing what seemed like an endless supply of energy. For a moment. he wondered if his wife was into some strange type of S&M that he wasn’t aware of, getting her rocks off by kicking the crap out of him. Punch, kick, block, kick, spin, duck, throw, roll, leap, kick, punch, matching each other move for move, rhythmically, in a dangerous dance. Liam was usually serious with training, patrol, and combat, but with Marcella he made exceptions to loosen up.
“I said, again!” she barked, her eyes glowering.
“You’re cute when you’re on a power trip.”
“Yeah? And you’re a very insubordinate pupil,” she scolded.
Liam grinned, “And yet, you married me anyway.”
“A moment of weakness,” she teased.
Charging at Liam with a battle cry, Marcella swung her fist around, trying to strike him; but he brought up his arm and blocked the attack. Liam then ducked into a leg sweep trying to trip her off her feet. Marcella jumped, swinging into a roundhouse kick aimed at Liam’s chest when he jumped away from the attack, grinning at his queen.
“Looks like I’m too fast for you, my love.” He said, lowering his arms.
‘Just the opening I needed’ Marcella spun around, using what was left of her energy to swing another attack at Liam. This time it connected, knocking Liam on his back once more. Liam groaned as he squeezed his eyes shut, trying to ignore the throbbing in his head.
“Now who’s the slow one?” she crossed her arms and gave Liam a wide grin. The look of discomfort on his face was quickly replaced with one of amusement.
“It looks as though you still are.”
Marcella’s eyes widened as Liam used his leg to sweep her legs out from under her. She went down with a yelp, falling on top of Liam their faces only inches apart, breathing hard, soaked with sweat, their hearts pounding, but not from the sparring alone. He could feel her hot breath against his lips with each exhalation. Liam’s mind spun at her beauty, her strength, her bravery, her complete and utter belief that they would prevail in the face of overwhelming odds. She inspired him…
“Sorry,” she breathed sincerely, propping herself up on her elbows.
“I’m not.” Liam answered, wrapping his arms around her waist. “I love being this close to you.”
Marcella giggled, lowering her arms around Liam’s head. “You know,” she whispered, leaning closer to Liam. “I think I would prefer being just a tad bit closer.”
“I won’t fight you on that.” He grinned. “Consider this match of yours a victory.”
“Oh? Are you surrendering, King Liam?” a big smile appearing on her face.
“I am waving the white flag and I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to admit defeat. Although…..” Liam paused. “I will not be so forgiving next time.”
Marcella giggled, “You’re on. Just name the time and place.”
“The spa room in 15 minutes.” His eyebrows wiggling suggestively.
“Why wait?” Marcella asked flirtatiously, locking her lips with his, Liam deepening the kiss.
“Ahem…..” They whipped their heads around to see Olivia leaning against the doorframe, her arms crossed with an amused look on her face.
“Far be it from me to give you crap about this,” she said, “after all you two rule an entire country and can do whatever the hell you want-- but could you at least free up the training room and continue this disgusting display of affection someplace else?”
There was a long baffled pause as they tried to regain their composure before running out the training room, hand in hand, laughing in a helpless fit of giggles.

The Iowa Town Where Marianne Williamson Is Already President
Photos by KC McGinnis for Politico Magazine
Adam Wren is a contributing editor at Politico Publication and Indianapolis Regular Monthly
FAIRFIELD, Iowa– Inside the Raj, a picturesque French country-style day spa and resort nestled among cornfields in southeastern Iowa, I requested the gemstone light therapy, which promised to deluge me with inner peace, broaden my consciousness and increase my energy.
But they informed me I wasn’t prepared.
I had actually traveled to Fairfield and nearby Maharishi Vedic City to try to comprehend the appeal of Marianne Williamson, a spiritual master running for president.
On Thursday, less than a month before the Iowa caucuses, Williamson laid off her whole staff but didn’t suspend her project. “The point of my candidacy has actually been to inform the heart’s truth and that does not cost money,” she composed. There are a couple of places in the nation where her heart’s fact resonates more than others. If you look at the greatest densities of Williamson donors around the U.S.– as illustrated in an August analysis by the New York City Times— most fall in the locations you might anticipate: Northern California, Hawaii and candidates’ capitals like Sedona, Arizona. However one is right in the heartland– in truth within a brief drive of the gabled white farmhouse made popular in American Gothic
In these surrounding southeast Iowa burgs of Vedic City and Fairfield– farming communities, dotted by a Household Video, a Pizza King and a Tractor Supply store– Williamson might as well already be president.
Head northwest of the Fairfield town square a couple of blocks, past Everybody’s Whole Foods store, equipped with the finest foods from America’s first all-organic city, and you’ll begin to find out why this location has actually seen a lot Williamson. This is the home of Maharishi International University, a school established in 1974 by the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a famous neo-Hindu professional and master to the Beach Boys and the Beatles. On the edge of campus, the Maharishi Tower of Invincibility towers above the horizon. I would later on learn it’s a sign of “best inner coherence and combination,” making the space around it “impenetrable to disorderly outdoors impacts,” according to MaharishiTower.org.
The tower guards two giant domes that hover above the flat Midwestern earth like golden, grounded flying saucers. Inside these 2 domes, two times a day, nearly 1,000 residents collect– women in one, men in the other– to participate in transcendental meditation, an essential part of Maharishi’s mentors, and yogic flying, a kind of cross-legged hopping that practitioners state can mimic flying. It’s a practice they believe makes the world a more serene location. Adherents say that if they can get the square root of 1 percent of the U.S. population– about 1,900 people– here practicing meditation all at once, their brain waves can materially enhance the world and elevate humankind’s collective consciousness, fending off wars, economic downturns and, according to a current argumentation released by a doctoral prospect at the university, car accidents.
” When people will practice meditation together in a big enough group, it has an impact of soothing the environment for an extended range,” Ed Malloy, Fairfield’s nine-term Democratic mayor, informed me on a current visit.
” It’s very real,” said Fred Travis, a professor and chairman of the Department of Maharishi Vedic Science.
Of the nearly dozen residents I consulted with on my trip– from Malloy to a regional café owner– all seemed to understand Williamson and support her candidacy (though Sen. Bernie Sanders and, provided her peacenik platform, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard drew some support, too). And, as remote as these fans of the late Maharishi may seem from in-the-know politics, they are also more pertinent than you might think: Individuals of Jefferson County are timeless Obama-Trump voters– Obama won the county by 16 points in 2012, but it turned for Trump by half a point in 2016.
In September, on the International Day of Peace, Williamson spoke to a crowd collected here at a regional events. “How ridiculous is it that we have one day that we commit to peace?” She asked the audience. “International Day of Peace. One day. Much we could say that 364 days of the year appear quite much dedicated to war.”
For the next hour or so, she described her vision for the nation, before leading the audience in a 10- minute directed meditation.
The crowd beinged in silence.
If you construct it, they will Om. That was more or less the sentiment that led Rogers and Candace Badgett in the early 1990 s to construct– in the middle of cornfields– a $7 million, 36,000- square-foot medspa referred to as the Raj, a health retreat devoted to Ayurvedic, an Indian school of alternative medicine advanced by the Maharishi. (” People don’t utilize om” in transcendental meditation,” Candace would later inform me, when I ventured the contrast between Field of Dreams and the Raj. “It’s a various type of meditation.”)
The Raj is in Maharishi Vedic City, a few miles north of Fairfield and the university.
As I pulled up to the hotel in the middle of relatively nowhere, I found a half-dozen luxury vehicles parked out front.
Inside, as I waited for Rogers and Candace, I perused a menu of health spa treatments. My eyes settled upon something called Maharishi Light Therapy with Gems. For $120, I could get the Routine Beamer ($250 for the Big Beamer), a treatment which promised “higher states of consciousness.” After a very long time on the project path, it sounded great, whatever it was. (I would later on find out the treatment basically sends light beams into your body through gems. Practitioners think the stone’s crystalline molecular structure gives the light a corrective effect. The Huge Beamer, by the way, “makes use of 12 times the number of gemstones for a more enhanced and restorative effect.”)
Rogers, born in Western Kentucky, made his cash in coal and oil financial investments and assisted his family obtain the Boston Red Sox in the 1980 s before moving here in the 1990 s to deepen his transcendental meditation practice and be close to the university. Everyone in Fairfield and Vedic City seems to come from someplace else, drawn by the towns’ tranquil values: There are individuals from all 50 states here, and some 80 different countries.
Rogers and Candace took me into the parlor, the very same room where they’ve entertained Williamson throughout her stays. After her 2014 stopped working California congressional campaign, Williamson accepted an invitation from Candace to decompress here.
Over the next hour, the Badgetts sang the praises of Williamson. “I think they misunderstand her luster and her functionality because she speaks about love, and love appears extremely kind of abstract,” Candace stated. “Marianne’s understanding of love is much more profound than what individuals take it to be, since she’s simply speaking about an underlying field of intelligence in reality, and you come back to physics … that there is an underlying field of intelligence that generates matter. … She understands the entire concept of collective consciousness, and that you need to raise collective awareness to resolve concerns.”
I kept the discussion more or less on politics and asked about Williamson’s lack of experience in many policy areas. “The greatest problem is that individuals probably think it’s a cult or probably New Agey,” Candace told me.
Later, in the all-organic, non-GMO vegetarian dining room downstairs, I consulted with Travis, the Maharishi University teacher and director of its Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition. He wanted me to understand that what I had simply spoken with the Badgetts wasn’t bunk. He pointed out that one doctoral candidate at the college just recently analyzed the number of vehicle accidents surrounding Fairfield and discovered that accidents increased the further you went from the city. “Individuals here are aware that we do not reside in a classical world,” Travis informed me over a meal of vegetarian lasagna, broccoli and turnips. “We reside in a quantum world.”
The claim to be able to promote peace and security through meditation is one of Williamson and Fairfield’s less controversial beliefs. Williamson has actually questioned compulsory vaccines. She has composed that “illness is an impression and does not exist” and that “ cancer and HELP and other physical diseases are physical symptoms of a psychic scream.” None of this is “evidence-based” or backed by science.
Those pseudoscientific beliefs seem to be shared, in part, by residents of Fairfield.
There is likewise no reliable scientific proof that sending light through gemstones can cure the body.
In my discussion with the Badgetts at the Raj, I asked what would occur to me if I acquired the gem treatment.
” Different individuals have various reactions,” Rogers informed me.
Should I provide it a try right now? I asked Candace.
” I do not think so,” she said. It required to be done with a bigger program, she told me. I wasn’t prepared. Instead, I got the tongue checkup.
I also went through an Ayurveda Pulse Assessment, which, according to the Raj site, is a diagnostic exam in which an “specialist can feel the level of imbalance in the body, even before specific signs of imbalance end up being manifest.”
” That’s your unique music,” Mark Toomey, an Australian with a doctorate in physiology from Maharishi University, told me after pressing on my radial artery and instructing me to close my eyes. I passed both diagnostics, however Toomey stated he might tell I needed to get more rest. “Your pulse feels a bit tired to me, a bit rundown. Are you tired?” The project trail didn’t seem to be using well on me, he said.
Back at Everybody’s, in Fairfield, Mayor Malloy told me he goes to the Raj for three to 5 days a year as a matter of preventative health.
” We’ve had conversations about [mass meditation] as a technology,” Malloy said.
Malloy didn’t strike me as a charm charm kind of person. This time around, he informed me, Williamson’s ideas weren’t getting the kind of fair media protection he thinks they should have.
” All of her political concepts are well-formulated,” Malloy stated.
We talked about the town’s economic surge. “When people are devoted to establishing their own growth and capacity, there’s a lot of creative dynamism that comes out of that,” Malloy told me.
I discussed the traffic accident research study Travis had actually informed me about. That was nothing compared to the other thing that happened, Malloy said.
” Did he tell you about what occurred in the Washington, D.C., study?”
In the summer of 1993, 4,000 practitioners of transcendental meditation descended on Washington with what seemed like a far-fetched aim: lower the district’s criminal offense rate. They set up their two-month experiment in places such as a conference room at the Washington Hilton and at Gallaudet University. They had actually tried this with a smaller group for a period of 10 years, but it didn’t work. Until 1991, the nationwide office of transcendental meditation had been in Washington, however the Maharishi had grown inflamed with the capital’s seeming intransigence to the powers of transcendental meditation; it had worked in war zones, why could not it work in the District of Columbia?
” I would not encourage anyone to stay in the pool of mud,” the Maharishi stated in defeat.
Go west, the Maharishi informed his disciples. And so the national TM head office decamped from Washington to Fairfield.
But in 1993, a group of adherents attempted to save the country’s capital once again. “It would almost be careless if we didn’t bring this knowledge to the leaders of Washington,” Kamal Sunev, a spokesperson for the People for a Crime-Free D.C., a TM nonprofit, told the Washington Post at the time.
Malloy was there, and so were the Badgetts. They practiced meditation for up to 4 hours a day. “We were going to lower criminal offense,” Rogers stated. “In the summer. In Washington, D.C.”
The city’ spolice chief at the time, Fred Thomas, said the only thing that would stem criminal offense in the summer was a blizzard.
Under the instructions of John Hagelin of Maharishi International University, they invested $4.2 million on the program. “This might be the most far-out job we have actually backed, but it might be the most crucial,” Haeglin informed the New York Times
4 weeks in, violent criminal offense dropped by 23.3 percent. One Washington detective raised an eyebrow at the findings, though: “There has been impressive work by the officers and leaders of the patrol districts,” Winston Robinson, a leader of the 7th District, told the Post
A 1999 peer-reviewed paper in the journal Social Indicators Research checked out the phenomenon, showing that the drop couldn’t be attributed to authorities staffing. TM adherents and specialists chalk it as much as something called “super glow,” in which the positive vibes from those meditating altered the neighboring field of awareness. As a perk, researchers of transcendental meditation say, then-President Bill Clinton’s approval rating increased, while medical facility injury cases and unintentional deaths decreased– all thanks to the meditating, they argue However one of the paper’s authors compared crimes that occurred to crimes that might have taken place based upon a time-series analysis, a suspect method.
” You raise the whole consciousness, the consciousness is going through the galaxy, every word coming through your mouth is traveling through the galaxy,” Mila Urana, a housewife from Fort Salonga, New York, who did a two-week TM shift, told the Times “Whatever is favorable.”
There was a moment, previously in the campaign, when America– or at least a few of America– seemed prepared to take a Williamson campaign seriously, visualizing her as a kind of spiritual Trump slayer who could marshal our better angels and point us towards a “politics of love.” Her project introduced crystal memes and made its share of buffooning coverage. America is an intricate place, not least since a town like Fairfield– with its attractive white gazebo, town square and nine-term Democratic mayors– can exist together with even the most outré beliefs and candidates.
The last person I satisfied in Fairfield was Betsy Howland, the owner of Revelations, the coffee bar and New-Agey book shop where Williamson’s books are prominently shown simply off the town square.
Whenever Williamson remains in Fairfield, she makes a stop at Discoveries. A couple of years ago, Williamson had a secret to share with Howland: “I believe I’m going to run for president,” she whispered across the register.
Howland’s three daughters have actually taken Williamson’s course in wonders offered online. A Methodist, Howland moved here in 1998, leaving her partner, who had the “old beliefs” and didn’t meditate. Before the move, she had run a department store in Sidney, New York City, an old Montgomery Ward that, thanks in part to her meditation she said, set sales records. One day, she asked herself: What’s the most essential thing I could do for the world? She chose it was to sell whatever and transfer to Fairfield to add to the group coherence and meditation program. Now, in between shifts at the shop, she meditates at 5 p.m. and 6 a.m.
” I see her vision,” she told me of Williamson. “I believe they ‘d make an excellent team” in 2020, she informed me.
” A lot of the anger and hate and partisanship originates from stresses in the system. And if nothing more, meditation, in my case TM, it assists relieve those tensions.”
After we talked for a while, I informed her I had simply another concern. Did she think Williamson was unfairly criticized in September when she recommended people could use the power of their minds to turn away Typhoon Dorian? “The Bahamas, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas … might all be in our prayers now,” Williamson tweeted on September 4. “Countless us seeing Dorian turn away from land is not a crazy concept; it is an innovative usage of the power of the mind. 2 minutes of prayer, visualization, meditation for those in the way of the storm.”
Minutes later on the account erased the tweet. Her team later on said “it was a metaphor.”
In the pregnant time out in between my concern and her answer, Howland shot me a stern however quizzical look.
” You don’t believe you can?”

The Iowa Town Where Marianne Williamson Is Already President

FAIRFIELD, Iowa—Inside the Raj, an idyllic French country-style spa and resort nestled among cornfields in southeastern Iowa, I asked for the gemstone light therapy, which promised to deluge me with inner peace, expand my consciousness and increase my energy.
But they told me I wasn’t ready. So I had to settle for the tongue reading and pulse assessment. Several minutes into having a bald and shoeless Australian stranger peering at my papillae, I wondered what I had gotten myself into.
I had traveled to Fairfield and nearby Maharishi Vedic City to try to understand the appeal of Marianne Williamson, a spiritual guru running for president. She’s been an object of fascination with the political pundit class, often as the butt of their snarky tweets, but also because her appearances attract hundreds on the campaign trail and thousands on the lecture circuit. She’s been a best-selling author for more than 20years and—not unlike the current president—has a powerful grassroots appeal in precincts far from the knowing zip codes of Washington and New York.
On Thursday, less than a month before the Iowa caucuses, Williamson laid off her entire staff but didn’t suspend her campaign. “The point of my candidacy has been to tell the heart’s truth and that does not cost money,” she wrote. There are a few places in the country where her heart’s truth resonates more than others. If you look at the highest densities of Williamson donors around the U.S.—as depicted in an August analysis by theNew York Times—most fall in the places you might expect: Northern California, Hawaii and seekers’ capitals like Sedona, Arizona. But one is right in the heartland—in fact within a short drive of the gabled white farmhouse made famous inAmerican Gothic.
In these neighboring southeast Iowa burgs of Vedic City and Fairfield—farming communities, dotted by a Family Video, a Pizza King and a Tractor Supply store—Williamson might as well already be president. Long before she declared her 2020 candidacy for the Democratic nomination, Williamson had been cultivating this part of Iowa, holding a number of events for herself-help business—drawing visitors to local haunts such as Revelations, a quirky cafe that prominently sells her books, and staying at the Raj, the resort owned by Williamson’s friends and donors Rogers and Candace Badgett. She campaigned here seven times in 2019—nearly a quarter of the town’s 29 presidential campaign stops, according to theDes Moines Registercandidate tracker.
Head northwest of the Fairfield town square a few blocks, past Everybody’s Whole Foods store, stocked with the finest foods from America’s first all-organic city, and you’ll begin to find out why this place has seen so much Williamson. This is the home of Maharishi International University, a school founded in 1974 by the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a famous neo-Hindu practitioner and guru to the Beach Boys and the Beatles. On the edge of campus, the Maharishi Tower of Invincibility towers above the horizon. I would later learn it’s a sign of “perfect inner coherence and integration,” making the space around it “impermeable to disorderly outside influences,” according to MaharishiTower.org.
The tower guards two giant domes that hover above the flat Midwestern earth like golden, grounded flying saucers. Inside these two domes, twice a day, nearly 1,000 locals gather—women in one, men in the other—to take part in transcendental meditation, a key part of Maharishi’s teachings, and yogic flying, a kind of cross-legged hopping that practitioners say can mimic flying. It’s a practice they believe makes the world a more peaceful place. Adherents say that if they can get the square root of 1 percent of the U.S. population—about 1,900 people—here meditating simultaneously, their brain waves can materially improve the world and elevate humankind’s collective consciousness, staving off wars, recessions and, according to a recent dissertation published by a doctoral candidate at the university, car accidents.
“When people will practice meditation together in a large enough group, it has an effect of calming the atmosphere for an extended distance,” Ed Malloy, Fairfield’s nine-term Democratic mayor, told me on a recent visit.
“It’s very real,” said Fred Travis, a professor and chairman of the Department of Maharishi Vedic Science.
Of the nearly dozen residents I spoke with on my trip—from Malloy to a local café owner—all seemed to know Williamson and support her candidacy (though Sen. Bernie Sanders and, given her peacenik platform, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard drew some support, too). And, as remote as these followers of the late Maharishi might seem from in-the-know politics, they are also more relevant than you might think: The people of Jefferson County are classic Obama-Trump voters—Obama won the county by 16 points in 2012, but it flipped for Trump by half a point in 2016.
In September, on the International Day of Peace, Williamson spoke to a crowd gathered here at a local events center. “How insane is it that we have one day that we dedicate to peace?” She asked the audience. “International Day of Peace. One day. So much we could say that 364 days of the year seem pretty much dedicated to war.”
For the next hour or so, she outlined her vision for the country, before leading the audience in a 10-minute guided meditation. “As each of us, in our own hearts, in our own way, look to the creative force from whence peace comes, now we gather in that deeper place, in that perfect place, that place within the human heart, deep within the human psyche, we enter there. We enter there. We enter there.”
The crowd sat in silence.
***
If you build it, they willOm.That was more or less the sentiment that led Rogers and Candace Badgett in the early 1990s to build—in the middle of cornfields—a $7 million, 36,000-square-foot spa known as the Raj, a health retreatdedicated to Ayurvedic, an Indian school of alternative medicine advanced by the Maharishi. (“People don’t useom”in transcendental meditation,” Candace would later tell me, when I ventured the comparison betweenField of Dreamsand the Raj. “It’s a different type of meditation.”)
The Raj is in Maharishi Vedic City, a few miles north of Fairfield and the university. Vedic City, which Oprah Winfrey once called “America’s most unusual town,” follows “natural law”: It’s illegal there to sell nonorganic food and all the buildings face east—in accordance with a spiritual school of architecture believed to promote health and prosperity—and are topped by a golden architectural flourish called a kalash, better connecting residents to heaven. Incorporated as a city on July 25, 2001, Vedic City—named for the Sanskrit word “veda,” meaning life—is more or less the Raj and a collection of houses. Badgett is the town’s mayor.
As I pulled up to the hotel in the middle of seemingly nowhere, I found a half-dozen luxury cars parked out front. As I would later discover, the resort only accepts 15 guests at a time; the enhanced day spa experience is $595 a day, for up to 21 days. It is almost always full.
Inside, as I waited for Rogers and Candace, I perused a menu of spa treatments. My eyes settled upon something called Maharishi Light Therapy with Gems. For $120, I could get the Regular Beamer ($250 for the Big Beamer), a treatment which promised “higher states of consciousness.” After a long time on the campaign trail, it sounded nice, whatever it was. (I would later learn the treatment essentially sends light beams into your body through gems. Practitioners believe the stone’s crystalline molecular structure gives the light a restorative effect. The Big Beamer, by the way, “utilizes 12 times the number of gemstones for a more amplified and therapeutic effect.”)
Rogers, born in Western Kentucky, made his money in coal and oil investments and helped his family acquire the Boston Red Sox in the 1980s before moving here in the 1990s to deepen his transcendental meditation practice and be close to the university. In Iowa, he met Candace, a TM practitioner who grew up in Cleveland. (Their experience is not uncommon, I would learn. Everyone in Fairfield and Vedic City seems to come from somewhere else, drawn by the towns’ peaceful ethos: There are people from all 50 states here, and some 80 different countries. Filmmaker David Lynch, a TM devotee, is a town fixture, having established a master’s in film program at the university.)
Rogers and Candace took me into the parlor, the same room where they’ve entertained Williamson during her stays. The couple befriended Williamson years ago. The place has become something of a home away from home for the candidate, the Badgetts said. After her 2014 failed California congressional campaign, Williamson accepted an invitation from Candace to decompress here. Which treatments did Williamson prefer? We don’t have to go there,” Candace replied. “That’s kind of her private life.”
Over the next hour, the Badgetts sang the praises of Williamson. “I think they misunderstand her brilliance and her practicality because she talks about love, and love seems very kind of abstract,” Candace said. “Marianne’s understanding of love is much more profound than what people take it to be, because she’s just talking about an underlying field of intelligence in reality, and you come back to physics … that there is an underlying field of intelligence that gives rise to matter. … She understands the whole concept of collective consciousness, and that you need to raise collective consciousness to address issues.”
I kept the conversation more or less on politics and asked about Williamson’s lack of experience in most policy areas. The Badgetts informed me that transcendental meditation is more of a policy tool than you’d think:It has lessened conflict in war zones. From 1988 to 1990, 8,000 people known as the TM-Sidhas practiced meditation in the Middle East. Believers say this group was responsible for achieving a cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War, the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan, the end of the Cold War and, in Mozambique alone, a “12.4% economic growth rate, inflation reducing from 70% to 2% and a liquidation of the national debt,” according to WorldPeaceGroup.org. “The biggest problem is that people probably think it’s a cult or probably New Agey,” Candace told me. “I don’t think people generally appreciate the way it’s evidence-based.”
Later, in the all-organic, non-GMO vegetarian dining room downstairs, I met with Travis, the Maharishi University professor and director of its Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition. He wanted me to know that what I had just heard from the Badgetts wasn’t bunk. He mentioned that one doctoral candidate at the college recently examined the number of car accidents surrounding Fairfield and found that accidents increased the farther you went from the city. “People here are aware that we don’t live in a classical world,” Travis told me over a meal of vegetarian lasagna, broccoli and turnips. “We live in a quantum world.”
The claim to be able to promulgate peace and safety through meditation is one of Williamson and Fairfield’s less controversial beliefs. Williamson has questioned mandatory vaccines. She has written that “sickness is an illusion and does not exist” and that “cancer and AIDS and other physical illnesses are physical manifestations of a psychic scream.” None of this is “evidence-based” or backed by science.
Those pseudoscientific beliefs seem to be shared, in part, by residents of Fairfield. Immunization data from the Iowa Department of Public Health from 2013-2014 found that Maharishi School, the town’s K-12 school, had state’s the lowest vaccination rate, with only 47 percent of the school’s 178 students being vaccinated. Jefferson County had the state’s second-highest rate of vaccination exemptions that year, according to theDes Moines Register.
There is also no credible scientific evidence that sending light through gemstones can cure the body.
In my conversation with the Badgetts at the Raj, I asked what would happen to me if I purchased the gem therapy.
“Different people have different reactions,” Rogers told me.
Should I give it a try right now? I asked Candace.
“I don’t think so,” she said. It needed to be done with a larger program, she told me. I wasn’t ready. Instead, I got the tongue checkup.
I also underwent an Ayurveda Pulse Assessment, which, according to the Raj website, is a diagnostic exam in which an “expert can feel the level of imbalance in the body, even before specific symptoms of imbalance become manifest.”
“That’s your unique music,” Mark Toomey, an Australian with a doctorate in physiology from Maharishi University, told me after pressing on my radial artery and instructing me to close my eyes. I passed both diagnostics, but Toomey said he could tell I needed to get more rest. “Your pulse feels a bit tired to me, a bit rundown. Are you tired?” The campaign trail didn’t seem to be wearing well on me, he said.
Back at Everybody’s, in Fairfield, Mayor Malloy told me he goes to the Raj for three to five days a year as a matter of preventative health. He wears a ruby ring. (“It’s kind of related to more planetary influences,” he tells me.) He told me Williamson’s policies, including her plan fora new federal Department of Peace, are all built on these Vedic beliefs.
“We’ve had conversations about [mass meditation] as a technology,” Malloy said. He remembers talking with Williamson about the Department of Peace a decade ago. According to her website, Williamson’s new Cabinet agency would “dramatically ramp up the use of proven powers of peace-building, including dialogue, mediation, conflict resolution, economic and social development, restorative justice, public health approaches to violence prevention, trauma-informed systems of care, social and emotional learning in schools, and many others.”
Malloy didn’t strike me as awoo wookind of guy. He moved here from Long Island, New York, 18 years ago. He’s the CEO of fuel brokerage company that has operations in 10 Midwestern states. In 2016, he supported Hillary Clinton. This time around, he told me, Williamson’s ideas weren’t getting the kind of fair media coverage he thinks they deserve.
“All of her political ideas are well-formulated,” Malloy said. “These are things that Marianne has thought through for years. And I understand that mainstream folks listen to them and find them a little bit off-center, outside what they would normally think or say, but there is no debating, and she has thought about these things. They’re not whimsical ideas.”
We talked about the town’s economic surge. Fairfield saw a 4 percent population spike between 2010 and 2015, according to a 2016Des Moines Registerreport, and gained some 700 new jobs in that same time period, even as other rural parts of the state were hollowed out. I asked him whether he thought the meditation and the city’s way of life were responsible for its relative economic success. “When people are dedicated to developing their own growth and potential, there’s a lot of creative dynamism that comes out of that,” Malloy told me. “And the partnerships that are made in that essential relationship of creative dynamism gives rise to the entrepreneurship that you’ve seen here, to the expressions of art. That has the effect whether you’re practicing meditation or not.”
I mentioned the traffic accident study Travis had told me about. That was nothing compared to the other thing that happened, Malloy said.
“Did he tell you about what happened in the Washington, D.C., study?”
***
In the summer of 1993,4,000 practitioners of transcendental meditation descended on Washington with what seemed like a far-fetched aim: lower the district’s crime rate. They set up their two-month experiment in places such as a conference room at the Washington Hilton and at Gallaudet University. They had tried this with a smaller group for a period of 10 years, but it didn’t work. In fact, until 1991, the national office of transcendental meditation had been in Washington, but the Maharishi had grown irritated with the capital’s seeming intransigence to the powers of transcendental meditation; it had worked in war zones, why couldn’t it work in the District of Columbia?
“I would not advise anyone to stay in the pool of mud,” the Maharishi said in defeat.
Go west, the Maharishi told his disciples. And so the national TM headquarters decamped from Washington to Fairfield.
But in 1993, a group of adherents tried to rescue the nation’s capital again. “It would almost be irresponsible if we didn’t bring this knowledge to the leaders of Washington,” Kamal Sunev, a spokesman for the Citizens for a Crime-Free D.C., a TM nonprofit, told theWashington Postat the time.
Malloy was there, and so were the Badgetts. They meditated for up to four hours a day. “We were going to lower crime,” Rogers said. “In the summer. In Washington, D.C.”
The city’spolice chief at the time, Fred Thomas, said the only thing that would stem crime in the summer was a blizzard. But the adherents, undeterred, believed. And so they meditated.
Under the direction of John Hagelin of Maharishi International University, they spent $4.2 million on the program. “This may be the most far-out project we have endorsed, but it may be the most important,” Haeglin told theNew York Times.
Four weeks in, violent crime dropped by 23.3 percent. In news accounts from the time, the Police Department wouldn’t comment on the statistical drop. One Washington investigator raised an eyebrow at the findings, though: “There has been outstanding work by the officers and leaders of the patrol districts,” Winston Robinson, a commander of the 7th District, told the Post. “I’m not kicking meditation. Tell them to keep on meditating. Crime doesn’t stop.”
A 1999 peer-reviewed paper in the journal Social Indicators Research explored the phenomenon, showing that the drop couldn’t be attributed to police staffing. TM adherents and experts chalk it up to something called “super radiance,” in which the positive vibes from those meditating altered the nearby field of consciousness. As a bonus, researchers of transcendental meditation say, then-President Bill Clinton’s approval rating increased, while hospital trauma cases and accidental deaths decreased—all thanks to the meditating, they argue. But one of the paper’s authors compared crimes that occurred to crimes that might have occurred based on a time-series analysis, a suspect methodology.
“You raise the whole consciousness, the consciousness is going through the galaxy, every word coming through your mouth is traveling through the galaxy,” Mila Urana, a homemaker from Fort Salonga, New York, who did a two-week TM shift, told theTimes. “Everything is positive.”
There was a moment, earlier in the campaign, when America—or at least some of America—seemed readyto take a Williamson campaign seriously, envisioning her as a kind of spiritual Trump slayer who could marshal our better angels and point us toward a “politics of love.” Her campaign launched crystal memes and earned its share of mocking coverage. America is a complex place, not least because a town like Fairfield—with its picturesque white gazebo, town square and nine-term Democratic mayors—can coexist with even the most outré beliefs and candidates.
***
The last person I met in Fairfieldwas Betsy Howland, the owner of Revelations, the coffee shop and New-Agey bookstore where Williamson’s books are prominently displayed just off the town square.
Whenever Williamson is in Fairfield, she makes a stop at Revelations. A couple of years ago, Williamson had a secret to share with Howland: “I think I’m going to run for president,” she whispered across the register.
Howland’s three daughters have taken Williamson’s course in miracles offered online. A Methodist, Howland moved here in 1998, leaving her husband, who had the “old beliefs” and didn’t meditate. Before the move, she had run a department store in Sidney, New York, an old Montgomery Ward that, thanks in part to her meditation she said, set sales records. But one day, she asked herself:What’s the most important thing I could do for the world? She decided it was to sell everything and move to Fairfield to contribute to the group coherence and meditation program. Now, between shifts at the store, she meditates at 5 p.m. and 6 a.m.
“I see her vision,” she told me of Williamson. “That’s what we need.” She’s given somewhere around $1,000 to the candidate. “Every time she asks, I send some.” She caucused for Bernie Sanders in 2016. “I think they’d make a good team” in 2020, she told me.
“A lot of the anger and hate and partisanship comes from stresses in the system. And if nothing more, meditation, in my case TM, it helps relieve those stresses.”
After we talked for a while, I told her I had just one more question. Did she think Williamson was unfairly criticized in September when she suggested individuals could use the power of their minds to turn away Hurricane Dorian? “The Bahamas, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas … may all be in our prayers now,” Williamson tweeted on September 4. “Millions of us seeing Dorian turn away from land is not a wacky idea; it is a creative use of the power of the mind. Two minutes of prayer, visualization, meditation for those in the way of the storm.”
Minutes later the account deleted the tweet. Her team later said “it was a metaphor.”
In the pregnant pause between my question and her answer, Howland shot me a stern but quizzical look.
“You don’t think you can?”

The Future of Yoga: 3 Things Modern Postural Yoga Could Do Better
Yoga and Pilates teacher Trina Altman shares why she practices and teaches a lot more than asana. Here, three big ways she’d love to see asana practice advance in the near future.
I took my first yoga class in college and became a teacher in my late 30s. I was drawn to it, because it reduced my stress, felt amazing, and allowed me to create novel shapes that were so similar to what I’d done in gymnastics as a kid with an added bonus of mindful awareness.
Then a year into teaching, I started having pain from my right ear, down my arm, all the way into my fingertips. I was informed by my physical therapist that I had multidirectional instability (aka “pitcher’s shoulder) in not one but both shoulders—and I’d never played baseball. The MRI revealed a frayed supraspinatus tendon in my right shoulder.

I discovered much of what I was doing in yoga was contributing to my injuries. It seemed that all of the Up Dog, Down Dog, Chaturanga flows layered on top of years of tumbling, cheerleading, and gymnastics had finally caught up with me. This isn’t to say that yoga is bad. However, it made me realize that as a form of movement, it had some blind spots. Since then, I’ve learned to fill in some of these gaps by incorporating strength- and stability-based corrective exercises into my yoga practice and classes, as well as cross-training at the gym and Pilates studio.
As human movement research advances, I think it’s important that yoga applies this modern science to make the practice work for modern bodies and doesn’t get stuck in its “box-asana.”
Yoga is meant to be healing. Here are three ways that you can balance out your asana practice and make it more sustainable, so you aren’t sidelined by pain and injury like I was.

1. Yoga could start incorporating more upper body–pulling movements.
Nutrition 101 teaches you that if you only eat one kind of food, you’ll get sick. Kale is really good for you, but if you only eat kale, you’ll die. The same goes for movement.
As adults, most of our daily tasks involve pushing motions (think strollers, shopping carts, lawn mowers). The same is true in modern postural yoga asana. For example, you are often pushing the ground away in many poses like Plank, Downward-Facing Dog and Crow. However, there are few opportunities to pull against load or your own body weight, unless you’re pulling yourself deeper into a stretch, which feels nice, but won’t build functional strength.
When you only practice pushing movements with the upper body, then you end up strong in one direction and conversely weak in the other. As a result, this kind of overuse can lead to muscular imbalance, tension, and pain. It can also increase your risk of injury, since you’re most likely to get injured in the ranges of motions where you’re weakest.
You can add more pulling motions to your movement diet by cross-training with weights or equipment Pilates. Both modalities incorporate pulling exercises like rows using external resistance. If going to the gym isn’t your cup of tea or you don’t have access to Pilates equipment, you can still include dynamic pulling movements into your yoga practice or classes using a yoga blanket. There are several ways to do this, but Dandasana Slides are a great example.

2. Yoga could start including more hip strength and stability work to balance out all the hip opening.
As Mark Singleton laid out in his book Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice, modern postural yoga was heavily influenced by gymnastics and wrestling and designed to be performed by young Indian boys to grab the attention of an audience that might not be interested in yoga. (It was essentially a marketing strategy.) As a result, most yoga poses emphasize hip opening, not strength or stability, to achieve the big, crowd-pleasing shapes.
Most of the people taking yoga classes today are stiff men who sit at desks all day and women who have a lot of natural flexibility. While it’s not bad to open your hips, these populations are not always best served by extensive hip opening, at least in the beginning. A wiser approach would be to build hip stability first for control of your range of motion as you increase mobility.
Passive range of motion is awesome if you want to be an Instagram star, but it’s not so helpful if you want to be able to do functional, daily tasks. When you have a lot of flexibility without the control to back it up, you’re more likely to get injured and experience pain, such as sacroiliac (SI) or pelvic floor dysfunction. Your muscles simply aren’t strong enough to maintain the integrity of your joints during movement.
Functional range of motion is important in hip adductors, flexors, extensors (hamstrings), abductors, and internal and external rotators. But the adductors, or inner thighs, are a particularly common weak link in the hip joint. In yoga, you often stretch the inner thighs in poses like Upavistha Konasana, Samakonasana, and Baddha Konasana, but have few opportunities to strengthen them.
Adductor Slides area a wonderful way to strengthen your inner thighs. You could do a version of this using the Pilates reformer or the adductor machine at the gym. At home or in a yoga studio, you can use a blanket.

Finally, it’s also worth noting that oftentimes when something feels tight or stiff, it’s actually weak. If you’ve been stretching your hips for the last decade and they still feel tight, that could be a sign that you could benefit from strengthening them. You might even find that the sensations of stiffness and tightness go away, when your muscles are strong enough to support your joints.

3. Yoga could start focusing on strength at end range of motion to reduce the risk of injury from passive stretching.
It’s a little-known fact that injuries often occur at end range of motion. This is why you’ll hear horror stories about someone tearing their hamstring in a yoga class. It’s so common that it actually has a name—yoga butt.
In yoga, you repetitively move through end ranges of motion during vinyasas or seek it in static poses such as King Pigeon, Wheel, and Hanumanasana. As mentioned above, without the strength to control your ranges of motion, you compromise the structural integrity of your joints.
While it’s not bad to practice asana in end range of motion, if you intend to do it, it’s smart to be strong in those ranges. An example of this is Supta Padangusthasana B. When you practice this pose with a strap, you are exploring your passive end range of motion. When you remove the strap and perform the same action, you’ll discover your active range of motion.
The difference between your passive range of motion and your active range of motion can show you the importance of finding strength and control in ranges of motion that you can actually use. Those last couple inches, where you’re most passive, demonstrate the range where you have the least amount of muscular support or control and are most likely to get injured.
If yoga asana is your primary form of movement, this is another example of where it can be beneficial to add in some strength training like apparatus-based Pilates, weight lifting, or TRX. When you’re lifting a weight or using external resistance, you are limited by your strength capacity, because you can only go as far as you can move the weight. In yoga, it’s easier to go beyond a range of motion that you can control, because gravity is often helping you move into a deeper range.
I share all of this not to demonize yoga. I love yoga for staying centered and grounded. However, integrating some of the concepts from other forms of movement into yoga can help practitioners get all the benefits of asana in a more sustainable way.
