I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967), Lady Soul (1968), Aretha Now (1968), Spirit in the Dark (1970), Young, Gifted and Black (1972), Aretha Franklin
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not just a spirit in the dark but a beacon, one that never paused gleaming as bright as it possibly could; whether playing impassioned or jubilant, sultry and seductive or tender and articulate, Aretha Franklin’s performances simply emanate, radiate, provide clarity through all murk like no other. For me, Franklin’s singing, her versatility and originality are best exhibited on these five works – all of which are, by most measures, flawless.
Pick(s): ‘I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)’, ‘Chain of Fools’, ‘I Say a Little Prayer’, ‘Spirit in the Dark’, ‘Day Dreaming’

Older Bachelor headcanons!
Older Bachelor stardew headcanons because I’ve been playing lots recently! All sfw, some mentions of smoking/alcohol 💕 also please bear in mind I am no SDV expert, so sorry if these go against canon occasionally!
Harvey ☕️🔬📚
• Secret smoking habit that he would rather die than tell anyone about. Not often, but during flu season when he’s stressed, you can find him cooped up in his room with an imported cigar or a Marlboro Gold, an espresso and an Agatha Christie.
• Plays classic soul, funk, golden oldies and jazz in the foyer of the clinic on an old-timey record player, and chooses every day from his large record collection. Frequently irritates Maru with the extent of his Doris Day enjoyment.
• Kind of wide-set - very broad shoulders, and quite tall.
• Packets of salted peanuts and cookies on the clinic foyer desk which he restocks every week.
• Goes to fetch you personally from the mines or Skull Cavern sometimes when you get knocked out. And he also keeps a vintage forest green car behind the clinic to pick you up in. He hopes one day you’ll wake up on the way back and compliment his tasteful vehicle choice or notice he’s bringing you home. You don’t.
• Best friends with Evelyn. Worst enemies with George.
• Tennis player. Plays with whoever will say yes in the mountains and always manages to punt the ball into the lake somehow. Also used to be in a rock climbing club at university, and has sort of sinewy forearms as a result.
• Outrageous flirt after a few glasses of Pinot Noir, mostly because I think he’s on the spectrum but also because I think it would help him stop being quite so nervous.
• Brown suspenders. Every. Single. Day.
• Gives Jas and Vincent candy after their checkup.
• “Sweetheart/honey” as a nickname for you.
Elliott 📜🖋️🐚
• Striped. Matching. Pajamas.
• Finds, forages and cooks mussels when he needs to impress someone. And on that note, very much a French cuisine enjoyer.
• If blue cheese has no fans Elliott is dead.
• Rizz master. Silver tongue. Read so much romance when he was a teenager that it has actively become a part of his personality to be a book boyfriend.
• Very willowy and slender. Metabolism of the gods. Puts away food like it’s nobody’s business.
• Can read several languages, but just can’t master an accent so never uses them in a spoken context. Definitely a student of Latin.
• English accent headcanon! Probably spent the first couple of decades of his life in somewhere high-income like Warwickshire, or (more likely) Cornwall or Exeter, on or near the coast. I am also envisioning him as having been to an old collegiate university like Durham, or maybe a college at Oxford (Merton I reckon).
• Writes and then burns poems about everyone he’s ever been in love with. Starts keeping them when he meets you.
• Chats fashion history with Emily and Haley.
• Religious about his collection of cravat-style ties because he’s seen the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice a few too many times.
• Frequent book club gatherings with Caroline, Marnie, Robin and Jodi (mostly because mothers love him, the main selling point here being that he has definitely read at least one Jodi Picoult book. He does not remember anything about it, he’s just glad to be invited).
“Dearest/my love” as a pet name.
Shane 🍺🍕🐓
• Snores. Very quiet about it though.
• I know a lot of people HC Harvey as oldest but I reckon it’s Shane. He also acts the most like a bitter old man whereas I feel Harvey is just ‘mature’.
• Could be convinced to grow a beard. Maybe.
• Goes for a jog three times a week. Hates it. Refuses to stop and really isn’t even sure why he does it himself any more.
• Secret Lana Del Rey enjoyer. Mainly a fan of Midwest emo, classic rock, nu metal and sometimes country but the kind of country where they sing about killing people and getting away with it.
• Raised by heavily Christian parents in the Deep South. Yes this is a Southern accent headcanon. Yeehaw.
• Lets Jas put eyeshadow on him sometimes. Shaves properly only when she wants to put makeup on him.
• Craft beer’s number one opp. Wants an ice cold tap Budweiser only, and if there isn’t enough head on it he will be asking for a refund. Not that Gus would ever do that to him.
• Has muscle with padding. Very strong, very wide in stature, but not lean at all. Biceps wider than your neck that you could (and would) use as pillows.
• Makes the most insane hangover breakfast known to man. Bacon. Pancakes. Sausage. Home fries. Butter. Syrup. You’re putting on a bit of healthy relationship weight for sure with Shane as your partner.
• “Darlin’/baby” user. “Sweet cheeks” as a joke. Kind of a joke.
Hope you guys enjoyed these!! I am down irretrievable for Older Bachelor content because I love ✨older men✨
Please let me know if you’d like some more for these characters or the other bachelors and bachelorettes!

part two
part three
part four
part five
Your nerves deteriorated with each passing minute. It was almost ten o'clock. On most days, the time didn't matter, but today was Wednesday. Wednesday nights were highly essential for you.
For the past five months, you've been making late-night phone calls to talk to a specific phone sex operator named Jay. You had a sneaking suspicion that "Jay" wasn't actually his name, but you didn’t let that bother you. You understood that the operators were obligated to follow certain procedures for their own safety.
Except for the few small truths he told you, Jay's personal life was a vast mystery to you. All you gathered about him from your extensive conversations was that he was a man in his early thirties from the southern parts of the United States who enjoyed a good cup of coffee before starting his day. He never specified where in the south he grew up, but the Texan drawl sounded too genuine to be artificial.
On Wednesdays, Jay only worked until 11 o'clock, so the two of you came to the conclusion fairly early on that you should dial in a little after 10 in order to ensure that you were his final call of the day.
You managed to calm your nerves by doing a little dance. You twirled in circles until you found yourself standing in front of your full-length mirror that was intentionally placed in front of your bed. You stopped dancing and stood there, appreciating your half-naked figure in the mirror as you waited for the clock to strike 10:03.
You weren't sure why you always ended up so nervous around this time of the week. You'd been doing this for a while now, but it was just something about Jay that turned you into the shyest little thing.
You looked downright delicious in your baby blue lingerie. You brought it this afternoon along with a new toy. It wasn't like Jay could see it, but your imagination ran wild. Your breasts sat flawlessly in the laced blue bra. You looked like a fucking snack.
If only you could meet Jay in person, you thought, sighing in disappointment. You eyed the clock and shook the negative thoughts from your head before you ended up in a funk. It was time to dial in.
You were already drained from the week's stressors, and there were still two more days to go. You were in your last year of graduate school and utterly stumped on your thesis. You were sick of doing research, reading, typing, crying, and everything else that came with being a grad student. At this point, all you wanted to do was talk to Jay for as long as you possibly could and get off.
You called in, waiting for the main operator to ask you who you wanted to be transferred to. She answered in her usual upbeat voice. You answered her question and before you knew it the line was being transferred to Jay. You held your breath on every ring, as you always did, until Jay picked up. Unexpectedly, a memory of your very first call came flooding back.
9:58pm five months ago
Valentine’s Day
Ring. Ring. Click.
“Decompress until there’s a mess,” a cheerful woman said as she answered your call and you fought back a cackle at that ridiculous ass slogan. “Who would you like to speak to tonight?”
“Umm…this is my first time calling, so I’m not really sure.” you admitted.
“That’s alright, sugar,” the woman assured softly. “Let’s start with the simple stuff. Do you have a preference for gender or ethnicity?”
“Umm, well, ethnicity doesn’t matter, but I’d like to speak with a man.”
“Okay. We’re getting somewhere. What kind of man?”
“Someone with an accent.”
“What kind of accent? We have ‘em all here, sugar.”
The constant use of the pet name actually eased your nerves. Your shyness was depleting while your confidence was rising.
“A southern accent?”
You had a slight accent kink since you could remember. You appreciated all accents, but there was something extra sweet about southern men and the way they could hold a conversation. Maybe it was because you grew up in the south too.
“Louisiana?” The operator asked as she typed away at her computer. By the sound of her taps, her nails must have been quite long. You bet they looked as pretty as she sounded.
“More of a Texan accent please.” You insisted, nibbling your bottom lip as you waited for her to find someone.
“That’ll be Jay then.”
“It looks like he’s finishing up another call,” she informed. “Do you mind waiting on hold for a few minutes before I transfer you?”
“No, I don’t mind. Thank you.”
“Okay. Placing you on hold now.”
You were on hold for maybe forty five seconds. The wait music stopped abruptly and the line rang four times before a sultry voice spoke. “Hello, darlin’.”
And fuuuuuuuck.
The sultry twang of his voice sounded like toe curling, earth shattering, raw sex.
You went to say hello, but for some reason you forgot how your mouth worked. You palmed your forehead, wincing.
How embarrassing.
“Hello?” he said, tone shifting slightly.
“Hi.” you finally whispered, palms somewhat shaking. You never did anything like this. Thank god he couldn’t see how much of a nervous wreck you were. You weren’t a virgin, but you didn’t have that many sexual experiences. There was plenty left for you to learn.
“Sorry,” you continued, swallowing the lump in your throat. “This is my first time doing something like this and I’m a little nervous.” you admitted, shifting in the computer chair, spreading your legs.
“I understand. We can take it slow, okay?”
“Okay.” you nodded as if he could fucking see you.
“My name is Jay. What’s your name?”
“Y/N.” you blurted, without thinking. Were you supposed to give him a fake name?
He chuckled softly, “That your real name, darlin’?”
“Yeah,” you sighed deeply. “It is actually.”
“Well, Y/N is such a pretty name.” He complimented.
“Thank you.” you smiled, shoulders relaxing as you began to twirl in your chair.
“How old are you?” Jay asked.
“I’ll be 28 next month,” you revealed, slipping into a more seductive voice now that your nerves were further away, “How old are you?”
“I’ll be 31 later in September.”
“Ah, so you’re a Libra man?” you teased. You weren’t super into astrology, but you knew the basics and looked at compatibility charts every now and then.
“Am I now?” he laughed.
“You are and I’m an Aries. Apparently we’re very compatible.”
“Is that right?”
“Yeah.”
“You believe that?” He retorted.
“Sort of.” you mumbled, half shrugging.
“I think we’ll find out in a lil’ bit.” Jay purred. You pulled the phone away from your ear as you shivered in anticipation. You were already wet for him.
Goddamn. He already had you hooked
“Evenin’ darlin’,” Jay answered warmly on the third ring.
“Hi,” you responded, beaming up at yourself in the mirror. Jeez all it took was a simple greeting from Jay to have you smiling from ear to ear. “How has your day been?”
“It’s been alright. Even better now though.” He said, already flirting.
“I’m wearin’ the blue lace lingerie we looked at last week.” You blurted, getting straight to the point. You usually talked about regular things, but you were pent up and needed him to do what he was perfect at and make you a soaking wet mess.
“Ohh,” he exhaled sharply, “I wish I could watch you model it for me, Y/N.” He was always so good and going with the flow. He always made sure to give you what you needed. After all, that was what you were paying him for. It was left unspoken that you both forgot that this was a transaction a few months ago.
“I bought a toy, too.”
“What kind?” He perked up, even more interested.
“You got your laptop open?”
“Mmhmm.” he replied.
“Go to www.lovegasm.com.”
You listened to the pad of his fingers fall against the laptop keys as he followed your instructions. You ignored the fact that you were lowkey jealous of the keyboard that got to feel how his fingers felt against them.
“Okay. I’m there.”
“Click on the drop-down in the left hand corner.”
“Okay.”
“Then click on ‘for women’ then select ‘dildos’.” you instructed, you slid off your shawl, moving over to the edge of the bed to give him and the page a few extra seconds to load before asking, “You there?”
“Yep. Which one am I looking for?”
“Right column. Sixth one down.”
“I see,” he said, humming in excitement.
“Look familiar?” You asked, giggling softly as you laid back on your bed, spreading your thighs.
“A bit.” he admitted, unable to hide the smile in his voice. You could hear it clear as day. It was another small thing you looked forward to.
“I can’t wait to feel yo—it inside me, Jay.” you caught yourself, but it was too late. He’d already heard you and his cock twitched in response.
“No, you were right the first time, baby.” he said, kind of muffled, grunting softly as he raised his arms, removing his shirt and unbuckling his belt.
“I’m a bit thicker towards the top so we’re gonna have to finger you open, so that I can slide in perfectly.”
“Okay. Do you want me to take off my panties?”
“No,” he said, inhaling sharply. “Pull them to the side and rub your clit for me.”
You obeyed, pulling your panties to the side and slowly rubbed your clit with your middle finger, sighing softly.
“How wet are you?”
“Honestly,” you breathed deeply, running a finger down your slick slit. “I’ve been wet for you all day, Jay.” He groaned deeply at your admission, thick cock swelling in his pants.
“You’re gonna cum twice for me tonight, Y/N. First on my fingers, then on my cock.”
Your mouth fell open in a silent gasp. He knew you loved when he talked to you that way. It helped you get off even more.
“Got it?”
“Mmhmm.”
“Repeat it.” he demanded, growling softly in your ear. You stopped breathing for a second. Completely turned on by the rough tone he was taking with you.
God he knew what you liked so well.
“I’m cummin’ twice tonight. On your fingers, then on your cock.” You repeated, voice deep with arousal. You whimpered softly, rubbing faster as you felt that coil deep in your belly loosen a smidge. You were getting closer to the edge.
“Good girl.” he praised, making you sigh deeply and even more of a puddle.
“Slide a finger inside you,” he instructed, “Slow pumps.”
You obeyed, pushing in your middle finger, massaging your folds gradually. Although the motion was effective, it wasn’t sufficient. It didn't push you very far at all. You needed more.
“Can I add another finger, baby?” You asked, moaning louder as you rubbed your clit in wide slow circles, getting wetter by the second.
“Go ahead,” said Jay, granting you permission.
You added another finger, pumping faster. Now you were getting somewhere.
“Jay,” you moaned softly, grinding down on your fingers as you sped up just a little.
“I love the way you moan for me.” he praised, grunting softly as he popped the button open on his jeans and unzipped them. The faint sound of his zipper being pulled down made your nipples harden almost painfully.
“Shit Jay, I wish these were your fingers.” you admitted, sinking your teeth into your bottom lip, shyness long gone. You closed your eyes, picturing Jay’s fingers inside of you, while his free hand held pressure on your lower stomach. You listened to him pull his jeans down some.
“I know baby,” he groaned, palming his hard cock through his boxers, “So do I.”
“Keep rubbin’ your clit for me,” like the good and dutiful girl you were, you obeyed, rubbing your bundle of nerves in tight, fast circles. Your other fingers were busy pumping in and out of your tight hole.
It was weird at this angle, but you added a third finger and curled them up. Your thighs trembled as you fingered and rubbed yourself harder. Jay could hear how soaked you were for him and pulled his cock out, thumbing the bead of precum before stroking it lazily. You were always so wet for him and he oh so badly craved to taste it.
He inhaled sharply before letting a single command fall past his lips, “Cum.”
“Fuuuuck!” you moaned loudly as you came, body jerking against the bed as you worked yourself slower.
“That’s it, baby,” Jay purred lowly, talking you through a well anticipated orgasm. “Let it out for me.” You were gonna have to change your sheets, but you couldn’t care less at the moment. You were sex crazed.
One down. One more to go.
Jay’s hand locked down painfully on his cock, stopping himself from almost cumming. “Now grab my cock and put it in your mouth.” Jay said, taking a steadying, deep breath. The sounds you made when you came always got to him. The sinful whimpers and desperate grunts you let out damn near made him go feral with lust.
You palmed the silicone cock and brought it to your lips, licking up the veiny shaft before taking it into your mouth.
“Suck it, baby. Let me hear it.” He cupped his dick loosely, starting back up with slow strokes. He had to be careful.
You sucked the head while simultaneously pulling on the base, making the tip tug at your plump lips.
“Mmhmm,” he moaned, encouraging you to take him deeper. You tilted your head to get a better angle and took the fake cock as deep as you could, bobbing your head up and down, moaning loudly. When you choked, Jay growled. “Fuuuck, baby! You take me so well.”
“You’re so wet for me, baby,” Jay said, panting sharply, “I can hear it. Go ahead and push me in. I know that I’ll fit easily.”
“Goddamnit Jay,” you cursed, letting the dildo fall from your stretched lips with a loud pop, slapping your inner thigh hard enough to leave it aching in the morning.
“What?” He asked, snickering softly because he already knew the answer.
“You just always know what to say.” you praised, gasping softly as you pushed the cock inside you, all the way to the hilt. He was right. It stretched you, but you were so wet it didn’t even pinch.
You pushed the silicone cock inside you deep and fast. It felt so fucking good. You paused your moans so you could hear Jay. You wanted to match his strokes. Once he realized what you were doing he sped up.
“Yeah, that’s it, babygirl,” he praised, groans growing louder, “Fuck yourself just like that. Don’t stop.”
“Shit, I’m gonna cum,” you warned, pumping yourself even harder.
“Did I tell you that you could cum?” The harshness of his voice made you open your eyes and slow your movements just a tad.
“Jay p—please, baby,” you moaned louder, begging him to let you cum. He loved teasing you and you loved that he loved it.
“Please what, darlin’?” said Jay, amusement heavy in his tone. He knew exactly what you wanted. Needed. He was gonna give it to you, but you had to ask first. You had to beg for it.
“Cum with me this time,” you coaxed, whole body shuddering just from hearing the downright filthy noise Jay just made.
“Okay, babygirl,” he groaned lowly, breaths quickening as he pumped his cock nice and fast. “Whatever you want.”
“I want you to cum with me,” you begged, head thrashing wildly against the pillows as the tip of the dildo brushed up against that sweet spot deep inside of you. “I want to hear your moans mix with mine when we cum.”
You sobbed as you started back rubbing your clit. The tight circling of your finger combined with the rapid thrusts from the dildo gave you a window of 30 seconds before you were cumming your brains out.
“That’s it, baby,” Jay snarled, hips jerking wildly up into his fist as he stroked his cock even faster. “Be a good girl and cum with me.”
You came with a loud cry as your climax tore through you, back arching all the way off the mattress in sheer pleasure. Jay followed right behind you, cursing and whimpering as white ropes of cum landed on his belly and chest. You both panted harshly, together over the line as you recovered slowly from your intense orgasms.
“I think that was our best one yet.” he laughed warmly as he pulled a few tissues from the square box on his workstation to clean himself up.
“Hell yeah it was,” you agreed, cheering weakly. Your arms were sore as hell and your legs still shook, but you felt amazing. You were on cloud nine, fully satiated.
“Have a good night, darlin’,” Jay cooed, sleepily. “And good luck with your thesis.”
“Thanks. Night Jay.” You giggled softly, disconnecting the call, rolling over onto your side before drifting off to sleep.
The next few days were a breeze. You were in an advantageous mood thanks to Jay, and so you added four more pages to your thesis. You only had six pages left.
On Saturday morning you woke up earlier than usual and decided to get dressed and head to your favorite coffee shop. The cafe was only a couple blocks away from your apartment so you walked there. You loved early morning strolls. The gentle wind dancing across your soft skin as the sun began to peak always made you feel alive.
You left the cafe after the barista handed you your Assam Black tea and breakfast sandwich, while typing a text to one of your lab partners. You took a few steps without looking and collided with someone, dropping both your sandwich and your phone. Luckily, the grip you had on your tea did not falter.
You both apologized at the same time.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, sir. I wasn’t even lookin' in front of me.”
“My apologies, darlin’.' ' the man said, bending down to pick up your squished sandwich and unscratched cell phone.
That voice.
That voice you knew all too well.
Especially on Wednesday nights.
A cold chill ran across your neck and down your back, “Jay?” you squeaked loudly, staring at him in disbelief as he stood back up with your items in his hands. He stretched out his hands to give them back to you only to stop short, eyes widening in utter shock when he realized what you had called him.
The corner of his mouth turned up as he grinned briefly. It didn’t quite match his eyes at all. “Y/N, I take it?”
“Yes,” you nodded, giving him a small smile. “Hi, Jay.”
“Hi.” he said, eyes blinking slowly as he stood there flabbergasted, still holding your belongings in his hands.
“Nice to meet you.” you continued, extending your hand out for him to shake.
He shifted your sandwich and phone to his left hand, grabbed your hand with his now-free hand, and shook it twice. “Nice to meet you, too Y/N.” he said, shooting you a toothy grin. God, his smile was to die for. He sank his teeth into his bottom lip as he checked you out, admiring the view. During your phone calls, he, too, fantasized about what you looked like. He was not disappointed.
His palm enveloped yours. Damn his hands were large, you thought, gawking at him unapologetically. They were warm and had a few callouses. He must have used his hands a great deal for his other job. He never mentioned what he did for work.
You hoped that bumping into him wouldn't ruin your Wednesday night dalliances. Maybe he'd be okay with talking somewhere less public. It was quite rowdy both inside and outside of the coffee shop.
“My apartment is two blocks away if you want to go somewhere more private so we can talk.” you babbled, no longer able to look at him in his intense, pecan brown eyes for too long due to your shyness coming at it at an all time high. Fuck he was intimidating. The confidence he exuded had your mouth watering.
Christ, he was sex on a stick. The man only had on a dark gray shirt, blue jeans that hugged him in all the right places and working boots. A warm flush crept across your face and neck. Get it together, girl, you thought to yourself. He barely said two full sentences to you and you were already hot and bothered. To be fair, he’d been the only one to make you cum every week for the past five and a half months.
He raised a thick eyebrow at your suggestion — you dropped his hand, gesturing wildly once you realized how your offer must have sounded. “I mean—fuck! I promise I’m not a weirdo, Jay.”
His eyes crinkled as he chuckled, shaking his head fondly at you, “Joel,” he said. “My name is Joel.”

Good Luck, Babe! | Jake Seresin x Reader

notes: Hey friends! I know I've kind of dropped off the face of the Earth since the new year. I've had massive writer's block due to some personal stuff but I think I am finally out of the funk. Please forgive me for any errors, I wrote this on and off the past few months so I hope it doesn't come off terrible. I plan to make this a 2 possible 3 parter so leave some feedback and let me know if you want more. Hope you like it & please don't forget to like and reblog! 🫶🏼
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I agreed to come on a date to the famous Hard Deck but thankfully I’m not disappointed yet. The jukebox is playing old country songs and some couples are dancing on the makeshift dance floor, "this is definitely my kind of place," I think.
I approach the bar and look for my date Mickey, who waves me over from a corner booth. He kisses my cheek and slides his arm around me as we slide into the cozy booth. “So m’lady what can I get you to drink?” he asks, his eyes scanning my face but before I can answer a blonde man slides into the seat across from us.
Mickey’s face turns red immediately as the blonde grabs his beer and takes a swig. “My apologies, am I interrupting anything, Fanboy?” asks the blonde with a southern drawl, flashing me what I could only describe as a million-dollar smile. “Yes, Hangman, so I'd appreciate it if you could make yourself scarce,” growls Mickey, beginning to stand up and holding his hand out for me to follow.
“And leave this lovely lady alone with you? Not a chance,” responds the blonde, now standing in front of Mickey and in our way. “This lovely lady would also like you to make yourself scarce and stop bothering her date,” I said to the blonde, who just like Mickey turned to me with a look of shock.
Before “Hangman” could respond, I grabbed hold of Mickey’s hand and led us out the side door and down the ramp onto the beach. When we came to a halt, Mickey was still looking at me slack-jawed. “That was awesome! No one’s ever put Hangman in his place,” he raves, as I giggle in amusement. “Yeah, well he sure seemed like he needed it. Anywho, I don’t take it, he's a friend?” I ask. He shook his head and then explained all about how Hangman was just his insufferable coworker who thought that because he had the only confirmed air kill of this generation he was above anyone.
“And that’s the story of Hangman, anyway, fancy getting some ice cream mademoiselle?” asked Mickey while extending his arm for me to hold. “Of course,” I reply and chuckle as we make our way to the ice cream parlor by the boardwalk.
The rest of the afternoon went by without a hitch as I learned more about my date whose call sign was “Fanboy” due to his adorable obsession with Star Trek. That night I didn’t waste any time texting him that I had a great time and looked forward to seeing him again.
Maybe my mom was right when she suggested I needed to get back to the dating scene. As I lay there waiting on sleep to come, an image of Hangman flashes through my head and I can't help the feeling in my stomach. Shaking my head, I bury it deep down with memories from my date with Mickey.
I won't let anything ruin my happiness at this moment. That was until I woke up this morning and saw that my blue text had turned green and was unanswered.
Just my absolute luck to get blocked after what I thought was a good first date.
-
I went on with the rest of the week trying to feel unbothered about being blocked but it still crept into my mind every once in while. And that’s how I ended up parked in front of the Hard Deck on what seems like a very busy night.
I sigh and put the car in reverse, this is pathetic. But before I go any further, a blonde Ken doll look-alike catches my eye and I realize it’s Hangman walking in, which I hope means Mickey is probably inside.
Putting the car back in park, I take one last look in the rearview mirror and reapply my red lipstick. Time to show that WSO what he missed out on.
I’m immediately surrounded by a sea of aviators in their dress whites when I step inside, and a couple of them shoot me hungry looks. I take a deep breath and plunge through the crowd to make my way toward the back where I think catch sight of Mickey and his friends but I soon collide with a very very hard chest before I can reach him.
“So we meet again, lovely lady?” I hear as I tilt my head up and make eye contact with the owner of the hard chest whose hands are holding my waist steadying me. And wouldn't you know it, it’s none other than Hangman who is once again sporting that blinding smile. Up close I can see how green his eyes are and good lord all I can think is how this man is way too damn perfect.
I clear my throat and back away as his hands fall off my waist but I don’t get very far because his hand firmly grasps mine and I’m spun back into his chest once again. “What the hell are you-” I try to ask but my words die when I see the hungry look in his eye. “Not so chatty now, are you?” He smirks at me and I feel my cheeks burn. “What do you want?” I manage to croak, feeling now even more embarrassed to have come here tonight.
“Well for starters, I want to lead you out the door to my truck, then I want take you somewhere nice to dinner, and what I want most is to have those pretty red lips of yours around my cock by the end of the night, darlin’" He whispers in my ear, his breath on my neck making my head spin.
Usually, I would slap any man who spoke to me that way but my brain was currently short-circuiting tonight so I just nodded and followed him out the door into the parking lot to take part in what will probably be a very big mistake tomorrow.
His hand sits on my lower back as he leads me to his truck that is conveniently parked at the very end of the parking lot and before I can convince myself to back out of this we have reached the passenger door. He opens the door for me and helps me into the seat before rounding the truck and getting in too. His scent fills my nostrils, sage and sandalwood.
“I’m not sure I ever properly introduced myself, my name’s Jake Seresin.” He tells me as he pulls into the highway and I pull myself together long enough to mutter mine back. I take him in as he drives and notice the scar above his eyebrow and how rosy his lips look, and I can’t help but think of how good they would feel on mine.
I doubt any of my friends would be supportive of me throwing caution to the wind but something about Jake makes saying no, impossible. A spark goes through me when his hand comes to rest on my thigh just below the hem of my dress, and I sure hope I haven’t soaked the seat.
-
We pull up to a restaurant downtown that I only ever heard of because of because of it being expensive but before I can protest he is getting out of the truck and coming to open my door. “Jake, this is too much. I -” his fingers come to rest on my lips effectively shushing my protests. “Baby, I’m going to lavish you tonight and I mean that in more ways than one.”
His eyes are locked into mine as I nod. No man has ever managed to render me speechless, much less make me so agreeable but I guess that changes tonight.
The food and wine are exquisite and the conversation flows smoothly between us and I can’t help but want more of this man. My once disdain for him now vanished.
He tells me of growing up in Texas on his family’s ranch and of his rodeo days that ended too quickly when his father passed. He talks of how he joined the Navy to be able to support his family. I notice his eyes darken as he talks of missing home and how lonely his job can be because he acts like an asshole to keep people away, and I feel myself reaching for his hand to comfort him. He smiles gratefully, then casually turns the conversation back to me.
So I tell him of my sister, Meredith, who died a few years back because of a drunk driver which led me to pursue a career in law seeing as the man who killed her is free and she didn’t get justice. He squeezes my hand in comfort and I tell him that I moved to Miramar to get away from my hometown because everything reminds me of Mer and I wanted a fresh start and how I’ve been here a year now and hardly know anyone because I’ve thrown myself into my work instead of dealing with my grief.
I shudder when I’m done when I realize I’ve bared my soul to someone who I hardly know but I don’t overthink for long because Jake’s hand reaches out and caresses my face. He settles the bill and ignores my pleas to let me pay for at least half and once we’re back in the truck I realize that it’s nearly midnight and he asks for directions back to my place which I give without a second thought.
-
He follows me in and I curse at myself when I see the mess of paperwork on the living room table. “Sorry, I don’t usually have guests over,” I tell him, and he shrugs it off and helps me straighten the papers up. We settle in the small couch and I can feel the heat radiating off his body and the nerves finally kick in. “Um, can I get you something to drink?” I ask, looking over at the TV that is not even on. “No, thank you, Angel. Look, I know what I said at the bar but we don't have to do anything you don't want to do.” He assures me, my eyes finally making contact with his. But I don’t want him to go and I feel an urgent need to feel his skin against mine so I do the only thing I can think of and kiss him.
He kisses me slowly and carefully like I might pull away and dismiss him any second so I move closer to him and then climb onto his lap. He groans as I straddle him and I take the chance to slip my tongue into his mouth, savoring the taste of him. His fingers dip into my waist as I bite his lip and pull back. His eyes are blown with lust and I know then there is no going back.
His mouth kisses along my jaw and down to my neck and I moan loudly as he finds that spot just below my ear that drives me crazy. “Are you sure about this?” He asks, leaving kisses just above the neckline of my dress. “Yes, I need you, Jake, please,” I beg as he slides the straps of my dress down and his mouth trails down kisses, latching onto my perky nippe.
I arch my back and the dress pools at my hips, the cold air on my skin making me shiver for a moment until his warm chest presses against mine and I realize he’s ditched his shirt. I run my hands through his chiseled chest and think to myself that this is the kind of body that Greek statues are made of.
“Where’s your room?” he asks, between kisses and I feel another current surge through me. “At the end of the hall,” I manage to croak and he moves forward so I can wrap my legs around him and then he leads us to my room. The very short hallway feels infinite as he holds me against the wall and his hands run all over my body and I’m now shaking with desire.
“Jake, please,” I beg and I feel him grin against my neck and I blush in the dark as he nibbles on my neck leaving what I know tomorrow will be a very noticeable hickey. He finally takes us into my room and places me on the bed and as he towers over me it sinks in what I’m about to do and a shiver of excitement runs through me.
He pulls down the rest of my dress and I am left in my very small thong, he places his hand over my core and I quiver against it. “Eager aren’t we?” He whispers as he cups the thin fabric of my thong and slowly slides it down, pressing kisses onto my leg as he finally gets it off and stuffs it into his back pocket.
I raise an eyebrow at him in response, but he ignores it as he slides off the bed and pulls me to the edge of the bed where he kneels on the floor. I blush as I feel his warm breath on my thigh as he kisses his way to my core pausing just before reaching it, our eyes lock and I see that he is looking for reassurance. I nod, not trusting my words and within seconds he is eating me out like he is starving and my pussy is a full-course meal.
I moan his name loudly and tug at his hair but he doesn’t slow down and I feel myself getting close when he eases a finger in and he must sense that I’m close to reaching an orgasm because he pulls my thighs even further apart and adds another finger. My moans turn to whimpers as he keeps edging me. I shake against him while he uses his fingers to coax me through my orgasm.  “Good girl,” he mumbles as he slowly raises himself and placing a kiss on my lips and I want more.
“Fuck me, Jake,” I whimper as he settles beside me in the bed but I get a response that I was not expecting. “Not yet angel,” he whispers as he caresses my arm that fills with goosebumps as he gets further up and he turns my head to look at him. His green eyes are staring into mine so deeply I think he can read my needy thoughts. I run my hand down his chest and stop at his belt buckle, his eyes following my every move, and I decide to give him what he asked for at the beginning of the night.
Pulling him off the bed with me I take notice of my shaky legs but still, I kneel in front of him and undo his belt. I can feel his eyes on me as I ease his pants down and palm him through his boxers. A groan escapes him as I slide his cock free of the boxers and suck on his swollen tip. “Fuck,” he moans as I take him in my mouth and I feel myself getting wetter as he starts to fuck my face.
But he’s careful yet again so I grab onto his hips and increase the pace, eliciting various groans from him and when I meet his eyes he slowly stills me. “I want to come inside you,” he says, his voice husky with lust. His arms reach to pull me up and I’m back on the bed before I can protest.
“I’m not going to be as slow and careful, honey. I’m going to fuck you so hard that you can’t walk tomorrow, so stop me now if that’s not what you want,” he whispers in my ear and I shiver with excitement. I reply by pulling him down to me and kissing him as hard as I possibly can. Without warning he’s stretching me open, and before I can even catch a breath, he’s thrusting hard into me again.
His fingers are digging into my waist as I scream in pleasure, “Taking me so good, baby,” he groans while leaving more hickeys on my neck. He continues to thrust hard and fast and I’m shaking with pleasure.
My moans get louder as his finger finds my clit and I worry the neighbors will call the cops. But he seems unfazed as he continues to fuck me through it. I whimper loudly, my legs sliding off his sides as I reach my orgasm. “I’m almost there, honey,” he whispers in my ear but I barely acknowledge him, still lost in my high.
He fills me with his sweet release as I come down from my own. His green eyes boring into mine as he slowly pulls out and I feel his cum slipping out of me. “Look at you, baby. I made a mess out of you,” he grins, laying at my side and pulling me to him.
I lay my head on his chest as exhaustion takes over and any thought of getting myself sorted out flies out the window. He kisses my hairline and the last thing I hear is him saying “good girl” as sleep envelops me in his arms.
-
I wake up to my body aching as memories from last night flood back in and I smile, turning over, only to find the bed empty. Only my dress is in the corner of my bedroom floor, no sign of Jake or my thong. I curse to myself as I get up and feel even more sore if that’s even possible. He sure meant that he would fuck me til I couldn't walk.
The apartment is deadly quiet and I head to the bathroom which I find empty as well. Pulling on my robe, I check the living room which to no one’s surprise is also empty, and as I look out the window, I notice Jake’s truck is gone and then it hits me that my car is still parked at the Hard Deck.
Fuck me.
I check around the rest of the apartment and find no note anywhere. Disappointment creeps in as I decide to finally go shower and get him off my skin. When I catch sight of myself in the bathroom mirror, I see the damage he left on my neck and chest is extensive. Angry reddish marks stare back at me and I doubt all the concealer in the world can help cover what he did.
The next few weeks are a blur as I throw myself into my work and vow to never return to the Hard Deck. Long nights working keep me occupied so much so that I don’t realize my period is late for a week, and that’s when it dawns on me that we didnt use protection and of course, I hadn’t been on the pill.
The pharmacy is crowded as I buy a pregnancy test, and I glare at the cashier who very loudly yells “Good luck!” as I walk out. Traffic is awful too on the way home and I feel myself getting more anxious by the second.
I practically run to the bathroom as soon as I’m home and finally pee on the stupid stick. 5 minutes feel like an eternity when your future rests on the other side. The timer goes off and as I flip the test over, I grab hold of the vanity to steady myself as I stare back at the two pink lines that signify my worst fear.
I’m pregnant.

Best Thing I'll Ever Do - Lio x Savannah (Part 1)
Tumblr media
A/N: It is here!!!! Part 1 of 5 for Lio and Savannah's long fertility journey. Sorry in advance because y'all are gonna hurt with this one... and the next one.. and the next one... and, well you get it 😬 These parts will span over multiple years. Currently, Savannah and Lio are back together, but it's new.
Word Count: 5.1k
Part 2| Part 3 | Part 4 |
On a sunny day in Southern California, Lio Meier looks out the bus window, nodding his head to the beat of the song blasting through his AirPods. He is deep in his pre-game routine, ready to hit the ice for another battle in the greatest hockey league in the world. His eyes trail over the flat surface of the hotel lot, looking up at the blue California sky. It’s hot today, welcome compared to the snow currently falling on the East Coast. He feels the bus begin to rumble as the break is released, then glances towards the front of the bus as Hockey Ops director, Marc, comes towards his seat.
“Sup?” Lio asks, popping an ear bud out when it’s clear Marc wants to speak to him.
“Hey, Savannah isn’t feeling well. She’s staying behind to rest.”
“Oh. Okay.” Lio frowns. “Thanks for letting me know.”
He hasn’t seen his girlfriend today, but that isn’t unusual for game days. She is busy working on game-day content with her staff and he has to worry about getting in the right mental state for the game. They had been texting earlier about a few things, actually work related, but she never mentioned she wasn’t feeling well. She must have started to feel sick after they both took their pre-game naps.
Marc heads back to the front of the bus as Lio pulls his phone out. He navigates into his messages to check in on her.
You okay?
Yeah, just not up for the game.
Okay. I’m sorry you’re sick, babe. Can I do anything for you?
Win 😘 I don’t need angry fans in the team DMs.
Yes ma’am. Love you 😘
He chuckles, then puts his phone back in his pocket. He pops his earbud in his ear and returns to his pre-game focus.
By the time his skate blades hit the rubber mats of the visiting locker room after the game, Lio is on a high. Not only did the team win, but he had two goals and an assist. He was on fire tonight, flying through defenses, hitting his picked corners, and saucing ridiculous passes on the power play. He felt like he was in a little funk before this West Coast trip, but that all faded away tonight. He loves being on the road with the boys. And Savannah, even if she likes to tease him and keep him at an arms length so she can focus on her job.
Normally, Lio plays along well, but tonight he isn’t going to let her close her hotel room door on him.
Not because he wants sex. Mostly, he wants to cuddle with her and fall asleep together. Nights like this are rare, where they are going back to the same hotel and not catching a plane to the next destination. Instead, they are having back to back games against the Ducks and Kings.
Lio can’t wait to drill Luca into the boards tomorrow. Although, they don’t usually match up together, the boys have a tradition of finding the other in the first few shifts of the game. It’s a competition on who can hit who first. The two hockey players love it. Checking helps shift their mindset from brothers to opponents for the next 60 minutes.
Lio grabs two slices of pizza from the catering table, then makes his way down to the bus. He checks his phone, not seeing anything from Savannah, but plenty of texts from his parents and siblings. His parents are proud. His sister is reminding him he better not pull any shit tomorrow. His younger brothers are cheering about his top titty goals. There is also a text from Connor asking when he is back in town because him and Lucie are itching for a date night. He holds both pizza slices between his teeth so he can text Connor back right away. He misses Stella so much and knows Sav will jump at the chance to hang with her too.
Tuesday or Thursday this week works.
After texting Connor, he pulls up his phone app, clicking on Savannah’s name to call her. The phone rings and rings and rings, then goes to her voicemail. Lio clicks off the call, sending her a text instead.
Hey babe, we should be back in like twenty minutes. I’m gonna change then come up. No negotiations tonight 🤐
He smirks. He can’t wait to get his hands on her. Maybe let them wander over her curves, see what they can get up to tonight, but only if she is up for it.
The ride back to the hotel is quiet with most of the boys trying to wind down to go to sleep. Back to backs are brutal at this point in the season, so conserving energy and attempting to recover faster is important. Lio is one of the first ones off the bus, heading to his room and pulling on a fresh pair of sweatpants. He hangs his suit up in the closet, then gives his teeth a quick brush to remove the coating of gatorade and saliva on his teeth from the game. After, he heads up one floor to Savannah’s room. He continues responding to his dad as he walks down the hallway, slides gliding on the carpet below while his thumbs work on the phone screen.
He raises his hand to knock, rapping his knuckles against the solid door. He chuckles at his dad’s gif back to him of Swiss cheese when joking about the Kings goalie they face tomorrow. He looks at the door, surprised Sav hasn’t answered yet. He knocks again.
“Babe, it’s me.” He calls through the door.
Lio puts his phone in his pocket, then stuffs his hands in each one. He shifts his weight from side to side, stretching out his hips a bit. They’re feeling tight after the game. He mentally reminds himself to stretch before bed.
Lio pauses all his movements and thoughts, listening intently, trying to hear if Sav is walking towards the door. He steps closer, pressing his ear on the door. Of course he can’t hear anything. Instinctively, he tries the door. Of course it is locked. He steps back, double checking the plaque to the right that he is at the correct room.
“Babe?” He says louder. “I need you to open the door or respond or something…” He trails off, anxiety rocking through him. He knows something is wrong.
He pulls his phone out, calling her. He can hear her phone ringing close to the door. Then he hears the click of the lock. The door creaks slightly open. Lio sees Savannah on the ground, tear streaked down her face. Her face is pale and her body heaves with each heavy breath she breathes.
“Oh my god, baby.” He crouches down to her level immediately. He puts a hand on her cheek, feeling her skin. She feels fine. He moves his fingers to her jaw, feeling how clenched it is. Lio’s eyebrows furrow. “What is going on?”
Savannah whimpers. She is in complete disarray, crumbled clothes, hair fumbling out of her braid like she has been tugging on it endlessly.
“How long have you been like this, honey?” Lio whispers tenderly. His hands roam over her, needing to touch her but worrying about hurting her.
Savannah shakes her head. Lio pushes the door open, mindful of not hitting her legs. He works his way into the door fully, then cautiously picks her up. She shudders in his arms as he kicks the door shut. Her head rests on his shoulder, eyes screwed shut tight as she clutches her abdomen with coiled fingers.
“You’re in pain?” He asks. She nods vigorously. “Okay, I am going to call Doc up here.”
He gently lays Savannah on the bed. She immediately curls into a fetal position, moaning. Lio rests his hand on her thigh, rubbing along it in soothing circles as he dials the team doctor, Darius.
“Hello?”
“I need you to come to Savannah’s room. Something is wrong. 610. Please run.”
“Okay.” He hangs up.
“He’s coming, baby.” Lio leans forward, brushing her hair of her face. “I’ll be right back.” Then he kisses her arm, before walking to the door to wait.
The elevator opens and Dr. Darius comes out with his bag in his hand. He runs down the hall.
“What’s going on?”
“I don’t know. She can’t really speak, but she is in pain and holding her abdomen.”
“Okay.” Dr. Darius darts into the room, opening his bag. “Hi Savannah.” She looks up at him with fresh tears on her cheeks. “Can you give me a rating from 1-10?”
“Its a 9.” She wails. “I’ve thrown up three times. And I passed out in the bathroom.”
“Okay. What hurts?”
“It’s my Endo.” She grits out. “I have my period. I’m bleeding through everything too.” They both look down at Savannah’s pants, seeing the blood collecting on the fabric.
“Okay. We gotta go to the hospital.”
“I know.” She says. “I just… c-c-can’t.” She grits her teeth again, screeching through her teeth. Lio feel this heart collapse in his chest. He has never seen Savannah like this. He doesn’t understand what Endo is or what is going on. All he knows is she is a tough woman and for her to be wrung out like this, whatever she is feeling is extreme.
“Can you give her anything?” Lio asks, feeling slightly sick to his stomach watching her writhe on the bed. Darius is holding her wrist, checking her pulse.
“No. We don’t know what’s wrong with her.”
“She just said its… Endo… I don’t know what the is but it’s clearly painful.”
“We can’t give her anything. We will let the hospital take care of it.” Dr. Darius stands, walking into the bathroom. “Wrap this around her waist. Then I want you to carry her down to the lobby. I’ll grab Marc for the car keys and meet you down there.”
Dr. Darius leaves the room. Lio turns back to Sav. She still lays in the fetal position, eyes closed, focusing on her breaths, trying to even them out even as the pain clearly keeps her rigid.
“Hold on, baby.” Lio whispers, leaning down to kiss her temple. She reaches for his hand on her thigh, crushing it in her grasp.
“Lee, don’t leave me.”
“Never.” He promises. “I’m right here.”
Lio keeps his promise on the way to the hospital where he sits in the back seat with her and then in the chair next to her hospital bed. Although they get a bed quickly, it takes forever for them to be seen in the ER. Eventually, Dr. Darius finds a nurse who he explains the organization they are with. Then, a doctor comes to see them in another few minutes.
After flipping through the chart and asking a few basic questions, then taking her vitals, he sighs and flips the stethoscope back around his neck.
“Well, you’ve had endometriosis since you were young. But with the severity of the pain, potentially an ovarian cyst burst. Do you have a history of that?”
“Yes.” Savannah says.
“Okay, well let’s get an ultrasound done and see if that may be the cause.” Savannah nods. Lio squeezes her hand, finally happy with progress being made to get her pain relief.
The ultrasound confirms the cyst, it has burst, and Savannah should be feeling better after a few days. However, the radiologist warns Savannah there is significant build up of endometriosis in her uterus. Savannah stares blankly at the screen as the technician points to the areas of concern.
“You will want to follow up with your primary care provider when you return home.” Savannah nods, then looks away from the screen, playing with the edges of the paper blanket that was placed over her lower half for the ultrasound.
“What about the blood?” Lio asks the ER doctor when he comes back in to discharge Savannah.
“It isn’t significant blood loss to warrant further action. She may become anemic. Iron supplements will help. She will be tired for a few days while her body replenishes her supply, but nothing more to be done here.”
“Wait, what?” Lio shakes his head. “So she just has to suffer until her body creates enough blood. Why can’t you give her a transfusion?”
“Because other people have a greater need.” The doctor snaps back. Lio is taken aback. His mouth drops open in surprise, then he looks over at Dr. Darius like, ‘is this guy for real?’
“Savannah has been in significant pain for some time now. Can we get additional pain management prescribed for her as her body works on absorbing the cyst?” He asks. The doctor nods, tossing his notepad on the table.
“Any medication allergies?” He asks Savannah without looking up.
“No.” She weakly responds.
“Okay, this should be good then.” He rips off the note pad and extends it to her. She frowns.
“Can I have something stronger? This doesn’t really work for me. It’s basically stronger Tylenol.” The doctor contemplates.
“The circumstances don’t call for anything stronger at this point.”
“Seriously? What the fuck is your problem dude?” Lio snaps.
“And your boyfriend seems to have an anger management problem so I wonder if he wants you to get some pain pills for himself.” Lio puffs his chest out, trying to stand, but Savannah grips his fingers tightly.
“No.” She murmurs to him.
“This is very unprofessional.” Dr. Darius frowns. “Standard hospital protocol should allow for strong drugs in circumstances where patients have been in severe pain for over 8 hours, which she has. She was also give stronger medication than what you have prescribed here when she first came in and is now in a comfortable position.”
The doctor sighs again, like he’s so bored with this conversation and these three people, then writes out a prescription for a strong dosage.
“Please follow up with your provider when you return home.” He calls lazily over his shoulders as he leaves the room.
Lio pops up, following him out of the room with Dr. Darius hot on his heels.
“Look, I’m sorry I got upset, but you’re not listening to her. This is not normal. She can’t breathe, man. You have to help her.”
“I am helping her. She has a diagnosis and needs to work with her primary care provider for a treatment plan. This is a chronic condition. Not an emergency.”
"So, that's it? You're just gonna leave her in that bed, pump her with drugs, and hope thats enough for her?"
"Lio, let's go back in with Savannah." Dr. Darius encourages him. Lio stands there looking at the ER doctor with his hands on his hips. There are so many things he wants to say. He wants to grab that guy and throw him against the wall to make him hurt like his girl hurts. Then he can try to explain the differences in chronic versus new pain while he has a few broken ribs.
Ultimately, Lio scoffs incredulously and beings to walk back into the room. He looks at Dr. Darius. “We need to find her someone better than that asshole.”
Savannah has her eyes closed, slumped back into the pillows when both men come back through the door.
“What a fucking prick.” Lio mutters about the doctor to Savannah.
“He’s pretty typical of the other ER doctors I’ve seen.” She mumbles. “They see worse than some fragile woman with an invisible illness.”
“How is it invisible?” Lio asks, eyebrows scrunched tight over his frustrated blue eyes. “He literally saw it on the ultrasound. We all did.” Savannah gives him a small smile.
“Women’s pain isn’t take seriously. Especially when it surrounds uteruses or vaginas or has anything to do with periods.” She sighs, closing her eyes and laying back in bed. “I want to go back to the hotel and sleep for a day. Like literally a full day.”
“We can make that happen.” He murmurs, reaching up to hold her head softly. His thumb strokes across her forehead as his eyes drink her in, relieved that she seems to be pain free now. No thanks to that fucking asshat who just walked out of here. “You doing okay” He asks her. He reaches to her abdomen, adjusting the heating pad on her abdomen where it was sliding off without a hand on it. He rests his hand there gently, keeping it in place so she can stay in the position she is in.
“Mhm. Good drugs.” She smiles without opening her eyes.
“I didn’t know cysts could form internally…” He trails off, still brushing her forehead.
“Yeah, and I’m extra special, getting them regularly. They don’t always hurt this bad though. Guess it makes sense with how much fluid and such was on the ultrasound. Must have been big.”
“I hate that this happens to you.” He sympathizes. She nods through a yawn.
“Lee, I am gonna sleep for a bit, okay? Wake me when I’m discharged.”
“Okay, baby.” Lio whispers to her.
Savannah falls asleep quickly with Lio’s soft hands on her. He watches every second of her slumber, ignoring the other noises and distractions of the ER. Dr. Darius works with the nursing staff on her discharge paperwork, then signs releasing her from the hospital. They get a sleepy Savannah in the wheelchair, fill her prescription at the clinic in the adjoining parking lot, then head back to the hotel. Lio carries his girlfriend back into her room. He drops her off in the bathroom, stepping out so she can clean up on her own. Even though he wants to help, Savannah asks for privacy. He understands; it’s been a long, raw day for her.
Lio waits on the end of the bed, popping up when he hears the door click open. He wraps an arm around her, guiding her to the bed. He tucks her in with the new heating pad they grabbed for her at the pharmacy, then he tugs his shirt off to wind down for bed with her. It’s after 1am and he is dead tired- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Thankfully, Savannah doesn’t fight his presence. Instead she curls into him, sliding a leg between his so he can hold her as close as possible.
“Thank you for saving me.” She murmurs. “I would still be laying on the floor if you didn’t come looking for me.” Lio frowns, then kisses her forehead.
“I love you. I… want to talk more about what is going on with you. I should have asked before, but I didn’t realize it was this bad, baby.”
“It actually hasn’t been this bad in awhile.” Savannah confesses. “But the ultrasound confirmed what I had been thinking. The tissue has grown back and it is deeper.” She yawns loudly. “I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.” She confirms. “But right now, just hold me.”
- - -
The next morning, Lio wakes up before Savannah. He feels like utter shit. Luckily with it being a back to back, there is not morning skate to take part in. But there is breakfast downstairs, so he peels himself out of Savannah’s grasp and heads down to the conference room to grab something to eat for both of them.
“How is she?” Dr. Darius asks when he sees Lio.
“She is still asleep. But was stable the rest of the night and slept through it.” He surveys the options, grabbing a bagel with cream cheese for Savannah and a breakfast burrito for him.
“Good. I will come see her before we head to the rink. Determine if she should stay behind or not.” Lio nods.
“Thanks. I would appreciate that.” Lio says honestly. Dr. Darius pats Lio’s arm.
“You took great care of her last night. She will need that consistently with her condition.” Lio is silent, grabbing a few pieces of fruit for his and Savannah’s plate. He can’t agree or make any sort of response to the doctor because truthfully, he has no idea about Savannah’s condition. Last night was a huge shock to him. He knew she had something from their previous, short term relationship and from what she communicated to him in Switzerland this past summer about likely being unable to have kids. But he has never seen her as weak and sick as she was last night. It was terrifying to him.
“Last night… wasn’t normal?” He asks Dr. Darius as he grabs fruit right behind Lio for his own plate.
“Ah, it is hard to tell. I am unsure what her symptoms and the severity of her condition. I also do not specialize in that area. But in general, no. It’s not normal. She should be following up with her doctor after an episode this severe.”
“Is this like a once a month thing?”
“Lio, I think these questions need to be answered by Savannah. Talk to her. Listen. Offer support where you can.” Lio sighs, ultimately agreeing.
“Thanks again, Doc. For everything. Last night included.”
“Yes, please tell Savannah I will be coming up to see her later.”
“Will do.” Lio nods, then heads towards the doors, away from where his teammates are huddling together at various tables. Usually, Lio would sit down and shoot the shit, especially with a quick turn around from the game. But not today.
“Meier, where ya going?” Beckett hollers to him.
“He’s got a hot date.” Tony snickers.
“A lil breakfast in bed?!” Carter joins in.
The three rookies shut up and swallow hard at the glare Lio is throwing them. Lio doesn’t need to say any words; his message was delivered loud and clear. Lio carefully balances the two plates in his hands as he works the key card out of his pocket. He pushes the door open, looking around the corner to see Savannah up on her phone.
“Oh, hi. I was just texting you.” She yawns.
“Sorry, you were out when I left. Should have texted you.”
“It’s okay.” She smiles. She still looks exhausted and weak. Lio frowns back at her, even as she hopes for a smile from him.
“Good morning.” He says, dropping a kiss on her lips as he places her plate in her lap. “How are you feeling?”
“I’m okay.” She sighs. “The drugs last night really helped.”
“Are you still… bleeding bad?”
“It’s manageable.” Savannah says. The way she drops her gaze has Lio unsure if she is being truthful.
“Is it?” He asks, gripping her chin so she has to look at him.
“Yes.” She says, unwavering this time. Lio gently combs his fingers through the sides of her hair. He had pulled her braid apart for her last night before bed and her blonde locks are wild and wavy around her face.
“Good.” He murmurs, then leans down for one more kiss. He lingers there, needing her lips on his more than the coffee in his hand. Savannah watches him after he pulls away and climbs onto the bed next to her.
“I’m sorry if last night scared you. I didn’t mean for that.”
“Baby, you were going through it.” Lio shakes his head, unwrapping his breakfast burrito. “No need to apologize. That’s what I’m here for.”
“You had a good game.” She tries to change the subject. Lio shrugs.
“Yeah, it was decent.”
“Playing Luca tonight will be fun.”
“Yeah.” He says after swallowing his first bite of eggs, cheese and sausage. “Wish the back to back had been Kings first then the Ducks so we could have spent time with him and Liv.”
“That would be nice.”
Silence settles over the room as the two of them start to eat. Lio tries to pretend it is comforting silence, but it isn’t. He doesn’t want to push his girlfriend, but at the same time, he doesn’t understand how she is sitting here like last night was… normal. A worried shake rolls through Lio’s body at the thought. He looks over at her again as he finishes up the final bite of his burrito.
“I would like to talk about last night.” Savannah slowly chews on a piece of pineapple. She grabs her coffee, taking a sip, then sighing heavily.
“Okay.”
“You don’t want to?”
“No, I do. I know I’ve been putting this off.” Lio watches as she puts her plate on the bedside table. He contemplates for a moment, wondering what to even say next. His fingers find hers in her lap, lacing together as they share a look.
“I’m not trying to force you into telling me things you don’t want to. I only want to support you. But I can’t if I don’t know what we are facing, babe.”
“I know.” She reaches over, cupping this neck, rubbing her thumb across his jaw. “I love that about you. That you’re asking and curious and… scared for me.” She whispers the last part, eyes brushing over his lips.
“It’s hard not to be after last night. I’ve never… seen or I guess noticed this with you from before?”
“It wasn’t like this before.” She answers, still watching his mouth. Her blue eyes meet his. “It’s gotten a lot worse the last year. I had to end my Europe trip early last summer because of it.”
“I don’t really understand what you have, babe.” Lio shakes his head.
“I have endometriosis. It’s been in my family for generations. My mom has it. My aunt has it. My grandma had it. My two female cousins have it. And I have it too.” She shrugs. “It is abnormal tissue that grows in places it shouldn’t. It can completely enclose ovaries and fallopian tubes and implant deep into your uterus, getting worse with every period that you have.”
“Tissue?” Lio says, surprised. He was almost expecting like lumps or something after what happened last night. “But that isn’t what they said last night.”
“Yeah, so last night I have an ovarian cyst, which can be more common with conditions like Endo. I’m lucky to have multiple issues.”
“Okay… so what have you tried for treatment?”
“Um, everything. Including surgery.” Savannah shrugs, pulling her hand away from his. Lio chases her as she pulls away, sliding his hand to her thighs to grip it comfortingly. “I had surgery three years ago to remove a bunch of tissue and lumps called fibroids in my uterus because I was in the ER every two weeks from how bad the pain was. It helped for a while. We found a good birth control pill that helped calm down the growth of the tissue, but my doctor told me there was always a possibility it would grow back.” She sighs, whimpering slightly. “And it’s back.”
“Baby, we gotta go see someone else when we get home. You can’t have nights like last night every two weeks. It’s not good for you and how are you gonna work? You’ve worked so hard to get here.” His voice waivers at the end. He clears his throat, licking his lips. “Let’s work with the team to find a new doctor for you, okay?”
“Lee, I don’t want you to use who you are for me.” She furrows her eyebrows.
“Babe, I do. I want to use my name and my status and the team to get you the best doctors on the East Coast. And I’m gonna do it. But I need your blessing cause HIPPA or some shit.” He squeezes her hand. “Please, let me do this for you. There is better out there for you and we are going to find it. Get you some longer term solutions than a few years, okay?”
“I am willing to try, but I don’t want you to get your hopes up, okay? If they tell me the same things…” She trails off. Suddenly, she looks way, towards the window, her bottom lip quivering beneath her top teeth where she has tucked it into her mouth. Lio brushes her hair back behind her ear.
“You’re so brave, baby. I’m so proud of you and in awe of what you’ve been living through.” He whispers, rubbing her cheek. He leans forward, placing his lips there and kissing his way to her mouth. His tongue glides along the seam of her lips, urging her to open them so he can have his way with her tongue. Savannah whimpers into his mouth, running her hands up his chest to grip his shoulders.
“Lee.” She whispers when they pull away.
“Hm?” He rests his forehead against hers.
“My condition means it is extremely unlikely I can ever get pregnant. And… you should know that about me before we go any further down this road.”
“I know. You told me in Switzerland. I also told you I didn’t want kids.”
“Yeah, but that was before we were… this.” Her eyes stay down towards the bed, unable to reach his even as he pulls away to try and see her fully. She rubs the comforter between her fingers in both hands. Tear drops hit the bed on either side of her hands. Lio can see the pain in her body even as she tries to hide it from him.
“Sav.” She shakes her head. A shakey breath is inhaled then a sob wretches out of her throat.“Baby look at me.” He reaches for her hand, lacing their fingers together. Savannah is crying, silent tears falling down her face as her bottom lip trembles so hard.
“I can’t.” Lio maneuvers himself to his side, then drops his head onto her hands still fiddling with the comforter in her lap. Two of her tears hit his face as they drop off her chin.
“I love you.” He pauses, letting those words hang where they must between their bodies. “All of you. Your whole body and soul and spirit, baby. And I’m not going anywhere.”
“Lee, if you want babies you should find someone who can give you that. This isn’t fair to you.” Her voice shakes as she sobs the words out to him. Her eyes screw shut. Lio’s heart churns in sync with her pain.
“Savannah, trust me, it’s okay.”
“It’s not okay. I’m broken. You deserve-“
“You are not broken.” His voice is gentle, almost a silent whisper to match the tone of her voice. His hands hold both of her cheeks now, keeping her from collapsing backwards and away from him. She grips his wrists. Snot collects in bubbles out of both of her nostrils. Tears stain her pale cheeks as Lio’s heart shatters in his chest for her. “You are whole, exactly as you are right now.” She shakes her head no.
“What man wants a woman like this?”
“A real one.” He responds, then pushes up so he can kiss any remaining doubt from her lips.

Phantom Pains
Intro - Sun Bleached
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can thank Hozier for the inspiration for this one. That and everyone talking about cowboy Ghost. This is gonna be a lighter story apposed to Sarah's House. Some sad elements and smut. I hope you enjoy!
-bunny
Tumblr media
Simon knew he'd messed up. The fire he'd started burning down everything and he didn't stay to pick up the pieces. Now, years later he's back. The place he'd called home for so long the only safe place he could think of, the family inside broken and burned. He think's it might be too late to fix.
or
You can always come back home
Tumblr media
The house looked exactly how it did when he was eighteen. The paint had faded and the once red shutters had been sun bleached. But the red door looked the same. The fence around the property had been updated and the mailbox replaced. But it felt the same. He felt the same. The nervousness and fear sitting heavy in his broad chest. She might not even let him in. Might not even be home.
"Are 'ya gonna even knock, LT?" Johnny pipes up behind him and knocks him out of his funk, hands unclenching. He nods and raps at the door, the sound echoing in his ears. He can hear barking and wonders if it's Apple, even though she'd be ancient by now. It's only a few minutes before he hears her. Her voice matured now, telling the animal to hush. The southern drawl still evident in her voice. He can hear her unlocking the door and then pulling it open.
"Yeah?" She freezes when she sees him. Confusion in her blue eyes. Ghost can't breath, eyes stuck on her face. Fifteen years and she looks the same. Wide and bright blue eyes he used to get lost in, chubby cheeks he loved to pinch, and the same mouth he used to kiss. He can tell when she realzes who he is. Her eyes studying him for a second before she straightens up and speaks.
"Simon?" God he missed how she'd say his name. He nods, finally gaining the ability to speak.
"Peach." Her cheeks flame and that’s when she sees the men behind him.
"What're ya' doin' here Simon?" Her eyes are hard, something unreadable on her face.
"Need yor' help Peach." She shakes her head.
"Ya' know my names Cecilia." He feels that pang in his chest again. "And how can I help ya'll?" She's eyeing Johnny, the mischievous air about him. Ghost clears his throat.
"We're in some trouble, need a safe place." Her eyes narrow.
"Safe place? And you think this is some boarding house, do ya'? I'm s'posed to just welcome you back in like nothing ever happened?" This time it's his cheeks that flame under his baklava. The shame creeping up his bones.
"Pea-" She cuts him off.
"Cecilia, Simon. You've lost the right." She glowering at him.
"Please Cece, I know I've fucked up. Just let us in and we'll explain." Her eyes go to Price, clocking him as the leader.
"You, care to explain?" Her hand on her hip, she crooks her finger at him. "Inside, just you." Price shuffles past him and she slams the door shut in Ghost's face. Johnny slaps his shoulder and laughs.
"D'know what ya' did, Lt, but she seems pissed." Ghost pushes him and sit on the stairs, same ones he built all those years ago.
Tumblr media
He doesn't know how long they sat out there just waiting, but he was up the second the door cracked open. It was Price who stood before them, a small smile on his face.
"You got a smart girl Simon." The hes nodding into the open house. "C'mon."
The entry way was the same as well, the mat was new but the same table, key bowl, and pictures lined it. They found her in the kitchen, mixing a pitcher of sweet tea. It too was the same, the whole house was. At her feet was Apple, grey taking over most of the brown fur now. Another, slightly bigger dog was rushing over, tail wagging. Cecilia turned, clicking her tongue.
"Kiwi, off." The dog ran back to her feet, Apple getting up and making her way to Ghost. Knelling he petted her.
"Hey old girl." She nudged her head into his stomach. "Still so sweet huh?"
"Last year, she got into it with a cotote." Cecilia set the mixing spoon in the sink and put the pitcher in the fridge. "Came out on top, but lost a whole lotta blood. Didn't think she was gonna make it."
"Looks the same now, still a fighter." He placed a clothed kiss to the dogs head and stood up. She walked towards them, opening the backdoor so Kiwi could run out, Apple following behind.
"Got Kiwi to heard since Apple's getting' older. Damn dog is a pain." She leans agaisnt the counter and crosses her arms. "Ya'll can stay but I got rules, Simon you already know 'em." Ghost nods, her father's voice clear in his head even after so long.
"One, don't gotta pay rent but you will work for you board. Everyone pulls their weight 'round here. Two, clean up after yourself. I ain't your mama and I'm not cleaning up after ya'. Three, no funny business. Don't be bring girls or guy in here and fooling 'round. My mama will have a fit." At the mention of her mama Ghost perks up.
"Liz is here?" He ask cautiously. His heart warming up at the older lady. Cece nods.
"Still in her and daddy's room. She's sleeping now, today's been a rough one." Ghost nods, planning to ask her what happened later. "We get up at five. Gotta feed the animals, I make breakfast every mornin'. With ya'll here I'll have it ready by seven. Lunch at twelve. Dinner is every night at six, but Fridays. Those are rodeo nights. 'Member those Simon?" She has that twinkle in her eye. Ghost chuckles and rubs the back of his neck.
"Mmhm. Course. Still gotta couple scars." She chuckles.
"Ya'll lookin' at one of the best bull riders this town's seen in years." They at gawk at him, Johnny perking up and opening his big mouth.
"Like ridin' Lt?" Kyle laughs, cheeks darkening. "Fall a lot?"
"Should've seen him. Could get a bull calm in seconds, held on longer than half the boys raised here."
"'Nough bout me." He can't stand the attention. Cece laughs and nods towards the back half of the farmhouse.
"Room's still the same. Simon, we fixed up the out building after you left. Daddy swearing you'd come back. There's enough room for all four of ya'll." She opened the door to the sun room, finer pointing to the building he'd made his home. "Added heat and all. Even fixed up the bathroom. Bed's might not be the best but we can fix it later on."
"Same key?" She nods, fisting the same old key into his open palm.
"Still gotta jiggle it. And I've got some of daddy's things ya'll can have. Captain said this was all last minute so we'll work on getting the other stuff."
"When'd he pass?" Ghost notices the way she looks away.
"Two winters after ya' left. Got sick and couldn't shake it. Mama ain't been the same since. He swore that'd you'd be back. Said you'd realize this was you're home. Just had to sort yourself out first." She holds his stare, the pain clear in her eyes.
"Peach, I'm.."
"Soap? Mowhawk right?" Price nods. "Come help me get the boxes outta the attic. Simon go show 'em the place." Then she's walking off, Soap following behind her. Leaving Ghost to think about what he'd done.

Review fron : https://sirshambling.com/artists_2012/K/dumas_king/index.php
This one-off by the obscure Dumas King was written and produced by that energetic music man from Phoenix, Hadley Murrell. How the tracks found their way from Arizona to Stan Lewis’ Shreveport, LA base is anybody’s guess. The top side, a pun on “Lucille”, is a frantic R & B rocker, but the B side is a much more measured affair. Except for King’s vocal that is – which is a screaming, almost out of control performance based on early 60s James Brown style, when he sang the blues rather than funk. The fine guitar picking comes from Pete Cosey, and the keyboards from a young Rich Cason, whose later efforts have not been received with universal acclaim by southern soul fans like me.

Share pdude hcs??? 😈
ok soooo. idk if you mean one pdude in particular sooo imma do the basic ones! (p1,p2,p3,p4)
good lord it has been forever since ive been able to write down my hcs for these sillies, and i have a whole bunch so i'll put it under le cut :)
Tumblr media
p1
-well versed in ASL, uses it in overwhelming situations
-sunglasses double as prescription lenses (i give this hc to basically all of the other dudes, but i think p1 would need glasses more than any of them)
-probably the smartest of the other dudes. essentially a polymath. if you ask him a question about almost anything, he'd probably give you a reasonable answer
-surprisingly good at drawing. does better with drawing portraits rather than full body. has a very scratchy and rough looking art style
-(technically canon bcuz of like, the war journal) writes in a journal (essentially a diary, but he'd rather die than call it that), mainly writes about his emotions and internal struggles, but sometimes writes about the other dudes and his experiences with them
-cannot go to sleep in silence. he's gotta have music on or some sort of background noise or else his mind starts to wander
p2
-physically can't stay in one place without moving. whether it be rocking in place, tapping his foot, or shifting his weight from one foot to the other, he's always making some sort of movement.
-actually pretty friendly to those around him. he just has a pretty short temper, getting easily agitated by things (or people) around him
-besides p1, probably the skinniest of all the dudes. mans is all bones compared to say p4 or p3
-champ is his emotional support animal. he's been through a lot, and champ is basically his only refresher from the hell he lives in
-strangely flexible...can slip through fairly small cracks and corners easily
-has a LOT of vocal stims. this mf meows whenever he sees a cat. he makes random noises to himself. he repeats things that he hears others say
p3
-got a surprisingly good amount of muscle on him. goes to the gym pretty often. definitely flexes whenever he gets the chance
-slight southern accent. very noticeable when he gets angry or when he talks fast. if you point it out to him, he'd probably get really embarrassed
-average r&b enjoyer. out of the blue, p1 once asked who luther vandross was, to which p3 gave an almost hour long lecture about the importance of r&b and why it's one of the best genres to date, why old r&b is miles better than new r&b, quizzing p1 on different artists, etc
-also an unironic country music enjoyer. he begs and pleads the other dudes to let him play just a little bit of johnny cash whenever he's offered the aux cord. maybe a bit of dolly parton. hell, probably some shania twain, if he's feeling bold.
-a fairly good singer. he's no freddie mercury, but to say he's horrible would be an overstatement. knows what songs are in his range, and which ones aren't. isn't really one to sing out loud in front of a lot of people, though. (one time, he sang to p1 in an attempt to calm him down during one of his moments. it worked, surprisingly :0)
p4
-one of the happiest dudes. at this point in his life, he's not nearly as violent as the others (he still has his moments, of course, but he's not one to just spontaneously go ham) and just sorta accepts things as they are
-a genre GOD. this man listens to pretty much everything. his favorite genres are funk, nu-metal (or metal in general), pop, and r&b (he and p3 bond over their fav artists)
-while champ is basically an emotional support animal to p2, to p4, champ is more of a service dog. he's getting older, which means he isn't able to do things as easily as he used to, so champ is there to fetch things for him and in general, just help him with daily tasks
-very confident with who he is. he isn't embarrassed by the things he does. he takes pride in being different.
-doesn't give himself labels when it comes to sexuality or gender. it's not that he's against it, he just prefers the idea of being unlabeled. (though, i personally hc him as being pansexual and transmasc. you go grandpa.)
-DAD BOD. a fair bita muscle, though. he's pretty strong compared to the other dudes.
-has an array of random talents. one day he'll just start juggling randomly and be like "oh, this? yeah, i picked it up a few years ago. nothing to write home about, to be honest."
--
aaaaand that's all! sorry if it's a lot, i just rlly have a lot to say abt these goobers (and even more to say abt the dudes i didn't include!)

LAINEY WILSON - "HANG TIGHT HONEY"
youtube
On the road again...
[6.78]
Alfred Soto: For a while Lainey Wilson was a secret a couple of us critics passed around. Then she enjoyed a helluva 2022 and 2023. Blessed with a twang equal parts dulcet and tensile, she's terrific inhabiting ballads and excellent on hootchie-coos like "Hang Tight Honey," good enough as a song (check out the three-note guitar screech before the chorus) but as processed through Wilson's pipes a declaration of faith. [8]
TA Inskeep: The gasoline-revved single Miranda Lambert hasn't given us in years, this moves at a crazy (especially for mainstream country) clip. Jay Joyce's aggressive production gives this a thumping, propulsive, white-funky feel — akin to, I dunno, the James Gang's "Funk #49"? — while Wilson sells the hell out of it. Save the stupid line about her lover's "blue-collar kiss," this is great. [8]
Taylor Alatorre: A bit of lost songwriting wisdom from the pre-SoundScan era: if you rock out hard enough and unapologetically enough (and competently enough, though this is optional), you can make even a line like “blue-collar kiss” sound essential, like the song would suffer irreducibly if it were taken away. “Blue-collar kiss” doesn’t mean anything, just like a miniature “Highway Star” guitar solo doesn’t mean anything, just like shouting the song’s title in the middle of that guitar solo doesn’t mean anything. What it does do is further build up the sense that the singer, and by extension the listener, can get away with almost anything here — in this sonic universe, in this honky-tonk, or a well-crafted approximation thereof. What it does is make me type the words “lainey wilson tour” into Google as I’m writing this. [9]
Mark Sinker: Idly wondering “are road-songs still much of a thing (the way they used to be)?” when the middle eight kicks into full and quite surprising glam-stomp. Would the rest of the song be better if it fed more off this sound? Glimpses of the 70s can be nostalgic lovebombs, sure, but I don’t miss them. Because they sucked.  [5]
Ian Mathers: I'm going to remember my unaccountable animus towards this perfectly decent little song the next time I'm baffled that someone finds the markers of one of my preferred genres mysteriously enraging. But in the meantime, this is the best I can do for what might as well be nails on a chalkboard to me. [5]
Jonathan Bradley: Brick-walled bonhomie that's so weighed down by forced cheer that is has no chance at delivering the momentum it promises. [4]
Nortey Dowuona: Driver Williams can rip a good guitar solo, I guess? What does Jay Joyce have against drums?  [7]
Katherine St. Asaph: Southern comfort food served with oomph and familiarity. The sort of song where my musical gut refuses to agree with my rational mind that I haven't actually heard this at a dozen barbecues throughout my life. [7]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: I'm an absolute sucker for these kinds of country-rock road warrior songs — I stand by my prior remarks that Luke Combs' "Doin' This" is a [10] — but this is more fun than most takes on the style. It breaks from Skynyrd-esque power balladry to harken back to something older and weirder, drawing on the loose, frenetic energy of Stax party records. It's a triumphant record, the organ stabs and guitar riffs and even that incessant "ooh-ooh-ooh" hook coming together to sound like a coronation while never losing the joy of its groove.  [8]

Today's compilation:
Baby Boomer Classics: Mellow Seventies 1986 Country-Rock / Southern Rock / Folk / Country / Soft Rock
Something I've always been somewhat intrigued by when thinking about the broad history of American music is just how popular and integral both country and folk were throughout the 60s and 70s, but then by the end of the 80s, the overall cultural cache for both of them just seemed to have waned precipitously. Like, folk and country both used to swing pretty big sticks within the overall pop music landscape, garnering plenty of memorable top-ten Billboard hits apiece, and many acts were signed to and marketed by major labels too. But something then happened in the 80s where they just stopped getting that same level of attention on a mainstream level, and I'm not really sure what exactly caused it, because it's not like they were ever fad genres to begin with. So if anyone knows or has any concrete theories about all this, I'd love to hear.
Anyhoo, this set of Mellow Seventies hits from the JCI label's Baby Boomer Classics series takes us back to a distinct time when all this pleasurably softer and heartfelt stuff was really unprecedentedly popping. It's mostly a bunch of huge country, folk, southern, and soft rock hits, like The Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man," Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good," and Norman Greenbaum's classic psychedelic gospel-rocker, "Spirit in the Sky," but room is also made for Sly & the Family Stone's "Family Affair"—a landmark funk and psychedelic soul hit that was sonically unlike pretty much anything else at the time of its 1971 release—and Johnny Nash's reggae-soul beaut', "I Can See Clearly Now" as well.
So everything that's on this comp was definitely a big hit in its day, but one that *might* be lesser known to a lot of people is Danny O'Keefe's "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues." This catchy country-folk single managed to peak at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1972, and it sold a million copies as well, but it also turned out to be the *only* Hot 100 hit of O'Keefe's entire career. A lot of times, one-hit wonder acts are known for their lone monster hit—duh—but then they also have singles that toil much less successfully towards the bottom of the charts too, and it's up for debate whether or not that actually qualifies them as a one-hit wonder in the first place, because the charts dictate that they literally had more than one hit, even if the other hits were a lot more obscure than the ubiquitous big one. But in the case of O'Keefe, there's no room for argument Stateside; he literally only had one, solitary hit here. And it's a pretty damn terrific one at that, with soft country-twangin' guitar plucks and very lovely flute that, when deployed together like they are on this reflectively melancholic softie, are guaranteed to speak to your soul 😌.
Pretty great slate of laid-back 70s hits overall, but feels like a basic surface-scratcher in the grand scheme of things. A top-ten Billboard hit being arguably the most obscure song on your album seems to indicate that you didn't really put that much effort or thought into compiling it. It's still good music though at the end of the day, and essential listening for anyone who's unfamiliar with this type of stuff, especially.
