From “My Great-Grandfather Was a Racist” by Editor-in-Chief Gabriel Arana, from the September/October 2023 issue of Texas Observer magazine:
My great-grandfather, José-María Arana, was a racist.
After the United States barred Chinese men from immigrating under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, tens of thousands sought a new life in Mexico, where they faced no warmer a welcome as they established themselves. A former schoolteacher and businessman, José-María led a vicious campaign against the Chinese in the Mexican states of Sonora, Sinaloa, and Baja California in the early 1900s.
Seeking “all legal means to eliminate the Asian merchant,” whose growing prosperity he viewed as a threat to the working class and Mexican national identity, José-María formed a junta of local businessmen in 1912 to address what he called “the tremendous calamity of the Chinese jaundice.” He launched a newspaper, Pro-Patria, whose masthead boldly proclaimed, “Mexico for the Mexicans and China for the Chinese.” Featuring racist jokes and caricatures, the broadsheet portrayed Chinese immigrants as carriers of disease and a threat to Mexican women.
Tumblr media
“We cannot live together because there exists an absolute incompatibility in race, social customs, and economy,” José-María wrote in its pages.
My great-grandfather carried his message throughout Northern Mexico, making speeches in working-class towns like Cananea—whose poor copper miners he thought ripe for radicalization—and urging city and state leaders to restrict the types of businesses that Chinese immigrants could run, relegate them to ghettos, and expel them de manera definitiva [in a definitive way].
I’ve thought increasingly about my great-grandfather and his ignoble legacy as I’ve settled into life in Texas, where the Confederate cause is memorialized on statues, flags, and street signs. Growing up on the U.S.-Mexico border in Nogales, Arizona—where José-María’s widow, my great-grandmother, settled after his death in 1921—I knew little about my family tree’s racist roots. Like a lot of gay kids who come from a small town, I left to find people like me in bigger cities and only much later started to contemplate my origins.
Afew months after moving here in the summer of 2022, I visited the Capitol grounds with my in-laws from London. The Texas State Capitol is an imposing Renaissance revival structure made of pink granite with a dome that, Texans remind you, is taller than the U.S. Capitol. But what impressed us all the most on that first visit was the enormous Confederate Soldiers Monument on the right as one walks up to the entrance from 11th Street.
Tumblr media
Chinese immigrants sent José-María postcards with derisive poems in Spanish. Translation: Of your attacks I laugh / and you even give me compassion / And it makes me neither hot nor cold / your ridiculous oration. / And they say from Grand China / that you're gotten involved with the dance / with your gross propaganda / to fill your belly. —Ju Kun Lee
A bronze statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis stands atop one of five pillars, the other four support figures representing the branches of the Confederate military. The inscription on the pedestal below commemorates the 437,000 soldiers who “died for states [sic] rights guaranteed under the Constitution” and asserts that “the People of the South, animated by the spirit of 1776, to preserve their rights, withdrew from the federal compact.”
“It’s Texas,” I said preemptively, feeling defensive and embarrassed at the same time as my in-laws looked on in horror. It’s the same way I feel when an outsider mentions the state’s abortion ban or attacks on LGBTQ+ people.
The Confederate Soldiers Monument is one of 12 memorials on the grounds that perpetuate the “lost cause”—the historical myth that the Confederate cause was heroic and not about slavery.

A Very (Unhealthy) Vegan Affair,
Tumblr media
We all know the damage we have caused to planet earth, and I mean it when I say that the easiest thing we can all do is reduce our meat and dairy consumption, something I started doing late last year and intend to maintain.
Where I can (and whenever I can) I eat vegetarian and vegan meals, at home my kitchen does not carry any animal based products and I was surprised at how easy it was to swap my favourites (here’s to you yogurt!) for vegan alternatives.
Sometimes it’s not about being perfect, as a society we do not need four people leading a perfect zero waste Vegan lifestyle. We need everyone doing their best to make better decisions and we live in an age where it is so much easier to make plant based choices.
If you’re a vegan, vegetarian or just plan curious, here are some of my favourite places to eat as the world’s worst vegan:
Kalifornia Kitchen
Tumblr media
Another Instagram find, hidden in a side street just off of Tottenham Court Road this pink gem is home to the best vegan burgers I have had the pleasure to consume.
The staff are unbelievably friendly and the Panko Chikken Burger was the closest I have come to tasting real chicken in months, the burger was moist the bun maintained its structural integrity throughout (which seems inconsequential, but there’s nothing worse then being on a date and taking a bite of your burger and everything falls apart).
Now the chips (fries)! These could have a blog post of their own, think Five Guys spicy chips without the burning sensation, these chips had exactly the right level of spice, crispness and mouth watering moisture. I savoured every bite and tried to pinch my dinner guests, who valiantly defended their right to their own chips and only let me pilfer one.
Overall a delightful evening with wonderful company (and my instagram looks better for it!) but I would skip desert if I was you, Kalifornia Kitchen is all about healthy plant based food so their deserts leave much to be desired for my sweet tooth.
Address
19 Percy Street, Bloomsbury, London, W1T 1DY
Temple of Seitan
As an East London resident I have the joy of having a Temple of Seitan in Hackney (yes you’re reading that correctly). Designed in the style of the classic English chip shop there is something quite devilish about treating yourself to fried Chick’n. My guest and I went after we had both had an extremely long day at work, we ordered enough food to feed the five thousand and sat in a corner and stuffed ourselves silly. There is something so comforting and welcoming about the classic British chip shop, a rare moment in society where the class divide means nothing and both barrister and barman queue together for their daily dose of grease, something that The Temple of Seitan gets so spot on that you don’t have to feel sad about giving anything up in your quest to be more ethical.
Plus the food feels less heavy and fatty then an actual British chip shop, which leaves you wanting more, exactly as the devil intended I’m sure.
*For those of you not in the know, Seitan is wheat gluten which is often used as a meat substitute because of its excellent ability to absorbed flavour and maintain a “meat” texture, however is not celiac friendly.

Dirty Vegan
During my Vegan initiation I think I missed the class on Vegan related puns, nonetheless if you really are in need of a McDonald’s or Burger King style junk food meal, look no further then Dirty Vegan.
I personally enjoyed a Bare Back Three Way, yes that is genuinely the name of the bonkers burger I ate.
But the real star of the show were the sides. Two things I find myself missing is bacon and fried chicken. Dirty Vegan offered fried BBQ Jackfruit (an excellent substitute for chicken and pulled pork) and bacon cheese fries, both sides I gobbled with a child like grin on my face, for the first time on my (worlds worst) Vegan journey I found I couldn’t tell if I was eating meat or not.
The BBQ Jackfruit felt rich and fatty like meat and fell apart in my mouth, the BBQ sauce was perfection, tangy and sweet and made my taste buds dance! A bit of Jackfruit followed by the Bacon Cheese Fries made my heart sing (and my doctor cry) as the rich “cheese”, crisp “bacon” (I am genuinely curious what it was substituted for!) and gorgeous fries filled my belly with love and happiness.
My guest and I ordered this meal to be delivered on New Years Eve and I can’t think of a better way to kick off the new decade then fine food and fabulous company!
At the time of ordering (and eating) Dirty Vegan had a pop-up in Shoreditch, I don’t think that is there anymore however their main base is:
The Balcony, Westfield (Whitecity), Shepard’s Bush, London, W12 7GE
Fortnum and Mason
Every so often a family member (or two) fancy going for a lavish afternoon tea for their birthday. This year it was to F&M, I went with the intention to avoid meat but I was pleasantly surprised, when I asked for a milk alternative, that I was also brought a vegan menu.
I was even more surprised, when I ordered the Vegan Afternoon Tea, that it was so delicious and heavenly, I ordered more sandwiches. The sandwiches, cakes and even the tea where extremely decadent and rich (far from healthy) but oh so gorgeous!
F&M has an expensive tea room, but one way that they go above and beyond (and many other tea rooms could learn from them) is they offer free plate refills. This afternoon tea experience was by far the best I have had in London and was certainly the only place that I have felt the price matched the experience. Definitely a must do if you’re in London and fancy a spot of tea.

Fortnum and Mason, 181 Piccadilly, St Jame’s, London W1A 1ER
National Theatre Terrace Restaurant and Bar
Tumblr media
Next time you’re seeing a show at London’s iconic theatre, look no further then the Terrace Restaurant. A Spanish tapas style of food, it is recommended that you order three to four plates to equal a standard main, their menu is more vegetarian heavy then vegan however there was enough options for me to order the recommended amount.
Tumblr media
The plates were absolute works of art and the food… interesting, I did enjoy my meal however I found many of the dishes dominated by one or two flavours which became boring and bland the more I munched. One such example was the aubergine mousse, deep charcoal in colour, whipped to perfection yet boring in comparison to the artichoke and cashew stuffed mushrooms. However, where the Terrance restaurant triumphed was its dessert. I treated myself to an old favourite of mine, rice pudding. The terrace put quite the modern spin on the stodgy British classic (and at the time I wasn’t sure how I felt about it) by creating rice pudding balls in a passion fruit syrup, and despite my original reservations, it was gorgeous!
Address
National Theatre, South Bank, Bishop’s, London SE1 9PX
Nopi
Last, but most certainly not least, Nopi is part of a small chain of restaurants in London. Their menu has very few vegan options, but enough to make the meal enjoyable.
I have been to Nopi before and it is certainly pricey, but the friendly staff and fiendishly good Gnocci justifies the price.
They also make the most fabulous vegan chocolate chip cookies with Almond Milk, the milk is made in house and is creamier then any shop bought nut milk. The cookies ooze with rich chocolate, while still maintaining the crunch and doughy texture one desires in ones biscuit.
If I ever feel the need for a childhood comfort that equals its (non-Vegan) original, I am on the first tube to Oxford Circus.

Sarah and Adam Fairhead Hall knew of this old church in Willunga, South Australia, having regularly visited Sarah’s sister in the town. When they learned the property was for sale, they put in an offer and crossed their fingers, and finally five months later, their offer was accepted!
The heritage listed former Church Of Christ building has a rich history, having functioned as a Masonic lodge, WWII control centre, Country Women’s Association centre and more since 1870.
‘It had been lived in by others since 1991, but no internal structure like the mezzanine was put in place,’ says Sarah. ‘When we bought it, the church was hired out as a yoga studio, for belly dancing classes and chanting, along with party hire. So A LOT has happened in this space!’ Sarah says.
The couple and their children Story, (now 12) and Arlo (8) moved into the space in 2017, initially camping in tents, while they decided how best to divide the space.
‘It had to include a swing for the kids, internal windows that could look in a main space, and leave as much full height space as possible,’ says Sarah. ‘Once we figured out the layout it was a lot easier, then we could work out how big we wanted each room and kind of made it up as we went along… Eventually we just needed walls!’
Among significant additions include north-facing windows (in place of previously bricked up niches), a new kitchen, and the mezzanine built by Adam, containing three bedrooms.
Even with some walls now in place, the house retains somewhat of a studio feel, which is continually being arranged. Sarah is the owner of styling and vintage furniture business Read&Hall, and has furnished the space to adopt a rustic feel filled with vintage signage, tableware and other treasures proudly on display against a Dulux Antique White USA backdrop. The religious backdrop above the record player was found rolled up in a shed, and is believed to have come from a church in Copenhagen.
Being a heritage structure, Sarah says there are always compromises to be made, but that all comes with the territory of living in a church! ‘It was not a house and not designed to be one. The kitchen is very long and narrow and has a door into the master bedroom!’ she says.
In future, the family hopes to expand with an addition off the kitchen, under the guidance of a state heritage appointed architect. ‘We can’t wait to get to that bit!’ says Sarah.

Alicia Dufour has acted and directed on stage, and has several years experience of acting in film.
Website”
https://dufouralicia.wixsite.com/actress
Alicia Dufour makes her theatrical directing debut with Family Night. She started her career as an actor in theatre at the age of nine, and over the years has won multiple awards for many of her stage roles. She made the transition to film in 2012, and has been in a variety of independent films. Last year she produced and directed a feature length corporate video project for the County of Riverside. In addition to writing and directing Family Night, Alicia will also be taking on the role of Mom.
ALICIA DUFOUR
Actress Director Singer Dancer Model Artist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alicia Dufour was born and raised in Southern California. She began performing in elementary school and was focused primarily on instruction in ballet and jazz dance. During her high school years, she continued to practice dance and also began to fully engage herself in the world of theatrics. While performing in upwards of 3 productions a year, Alicia gained experience in all aspects of theatrical stage production including back stage, costume and makeup, and had numerous supporting and lead roles. At graduation, Alicia went on to attend the University of California, Riverside and simultaneously began to study voice with instructors Bill Risinger and Denise DeMarco. During her college years, Alicia continued to study acting and Performing Arts at UCR and also did stage productions through In The Company Theatre and the Joshua Project. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Art History from UCR, and became involved with Mt. San Jacinto Performing Arts,  performing in several major productions including WONDERFUL TOWN as Helen. During this time, Alicia was recognized with an Inland Theatre League nomination for her portrayal of Lucy in A CLASS ACT. She was also applauded for her role as a featured performer in the musical revue BLOCKBUSTERS AND SMALL WONDERS where she was featured in 21 of the 25 highlighted musicals and received an ITL nomination and rave press reviews. One of her favorite productions through Mt. San Jacinto Performing Arts was CABARET, in which she was the much talked about "trashy drummer.' Although it was a minor role, she was able to showcase her skills at improv and was singled out each night after performances by audience members who were impressed at her intense and memorable character. She also won an ITL for her role as Martha in the MSJC Performing Arts production of A PIECE OF MY HEART at the beginning of 2012.   During her time with Mt. San Jacinto Performing Arts, Alicia continued to study acting, dance and voice. Alicia began concentrated vocal training through Julie Adams and continued to expand her dance background while studying modern dance and choreography through Julie Freeman and Gail Hoak. It was while under Gail Hoak's tutelage that she used her background in psychology to choreograph and perform her much talked about and controversial solo dance piece entitled AGATEOPHOBIC which dealt with the disturbing depiction of a woman losing her sanity. Alicia also became involved with the Ramona Bowl Repertory Theatre and appeared in multiple productions, including FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and OKLAHOMA. She was a stand-in for the role of Nellie Forbush and appeared as Ensign Janet McGregor in the RBRP production of SOUTH PACIFIC which starred Shezwae Powell. Simultaneously, she also performed as Hero in the Bowl's production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. Alicia has partnered with the Idyllwild Actors Theatre out of Idyllwild, CA as an assistant stage manager and a featured actor in multiple staged readings, such as REASONS TO BE PRETTY and THREE VIEWINGS and was nominated for another ITL for her performance in the IAT production of MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD. For The Ramona Hillside Players production of TEMPORARY INSANITY by Jeri Greene, Alicia was double cast as a spoiled, alcoholic fashion model and also as a flaky and dim-witted legal secretary Wendy. For this role she won an Inland Theatre League Award in 2011.   Alicia began making the transition to film by studying acting through The fACTORy, working with actors Conor O’Farrell and Jamison Reeves. Soon after, she landed roles in two of the films by the Texas based indie film company Twitchy Dolphin Flix. In the summer of 2012, she was cast in the role of Deputy Karen Harper in the Lunatopia/Baylor film called VERTICAL by director Stephen Savage, working opposite Wolfgang Bodison. The film starred Marshall Bell, Irene Bedard and Elsie Kate Fiscer and won best independent feature at the 2015 London Independent Film Festival. In 2016, Alicia wrote her first short screenplay. She successfully directed the thriller film in Fall of 2018, while also portraying the lead role of the mother who, having felt abandoned by her family hosts a family dinner night to try to keep her family together forever. When Alicia isn't on set, she is a photographer and graphic designer, belly dances professionally and does vintage pin-up modeling.

Family Night Film Review by Jody Duncan, Editor at Cinefex Magazine
LOCAL LA FILMMAKER PRESENTS A UNSETTLING THRILLER ABOUT DESPERATION IN FAMILY NIGHT
In FAMILY NIGHT, written, directed and produced by Alicia Dufour, a palpable sense of menace underlies the mundane nature of a family meal. The initially subtle promise of violence soon delivers as the elegantly coiffed and dressed mother turns on her husband, daughter and son.
Under Dufour’s sure-handed direction, the 12-minute-long short is beautifully shot by director of photography Symeon Platts, and skillfully edited by Simon Myers.
Effective makeup effects by Eric Fox’s Morbx FX give the film its punch as ‘Mom’ (Dufour) disintegrates at the staid dinner table, and again, in a climactic, shocking reveal.
Among the film’s notable achievements is an original score by Mark D’Errico that is alternately bouncy and creepy – as is the film itself.
Gather round the table for Family Night – but I’d advise you: don’t be late for dinner!

She opened an RSIPA (Ritambhara Sahni’s Institute for the Performing Arts) in 1996 and teaches many dance forms like Urban Hip-Hop, Contemporary, Tap Dance, etc. Then in 2005, she started BDIMRS (Belly Dance Institute Mumbai by Ritambhara Sahni) to teach belly dance. Ritambahara has been teaching belly dance for 11 years and now she knows almost all forms of this dance. Due to her specialty in belly dancing, she is one of the most experienced professional belly dancers in Mumbai.
2. Gaby- Gaby is a foreign belly dancer who came from Columbia, South America and currently lives in Delhi. She started to dance at 17. Initially, she learned folklore from Columbia like Cumbia Currulao, Mapale, and other dance forms. Then she joined classes of Samra and Yulitza belly dance forms and meanwhile started to teach belly dance in Egypt, Brazil, and Argentina. Later she joined a Bollywood dance group Abhinaya and traveled India to learn other dance forms. If your party or event is approaching, Gaby is a good option to book a belly dancer in Delhi for your event.

6 LGBTQ+ Friendly Places to Travel
Sometimes you can feel as if the world can’t be the easiest place to travel if you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community, and while this can be true for certain corners of the world, it is surely not true for the whole of this planet. Let me take you on a tour of  some of the best places to travel for the LGBTQ+ community, from some of the golden oldies to some more interesting destinations that wouldn’t have normally been on your radar. And who’s going to be your tour guide? Well I’m Henry, one of STA Travel’s newest recruits, fresh from my travels in Hong Kong and far more of Asia!
Taipei – Taiwan
Taiwan can probably claim the spot as the most gay friendly destination in Asia, in fact homosexuality has never been illegal in Taiwan; and excitingly Taiwan legalised same-sex marriage in May 2019, the first Asian country to do so! In regards to Trans rights, the country still has a long way to go (as does our own to be honest), but there has been some good movement in the form of a ‘3rd Gender option’ on ID cards.
As with most nations in the world, the LGBTQ+ friendly areas are far more likely to be found in the metropolitan areas and Taiwan is no exception to this, with Taipei being the most LGBTQ+ friendly part of the country. The annual pride takes place every last Saturday in October, with over 80,000 attending normally, turning Taipei into one big party, reason enough to visit Taipei alone!
Away from being a safe destination or the LGBTQ+ community, what else does Taiwan offer? Well,  beaches, national parks, history and, one hell of a food scene. Do I really need say any more to whet the appetite?!
Check out our Travel Guide on Taiwan if this has got you interested: Travel Taiwan
  New Zealand
It might not come as a surprise to you that New Zealand has a great gay scene, I mean yes it is a bit far away from the UK, but if you’re going travelling you might as well really travel!
First things first, the Transgender community is nothing new in New Zealand, with the Maori having a long history of acceptance and inclusion of whakawāhine (trans women) and tangata ira tāne (trans men) in their society. And New Zealand had the first ever transgender MP in 1999 with the election of Georgina Beyer!
What to do for the gay traveller in New Zealand? Well first of all, gay or straight, New Zealand has some of the best landscapes the world has to offer, I mean we all know by now that the Lord of the Rings was filmed there, so there is of course Hobbiton for you Lord of the Rings nuts.
But if you fancy a true a unique gay experience then get yourself down to Queenstown for a Winter Pride on the slopes in September.
And, of course if you want to hit up the gay night scene then head for Auckland, which is New Zealand’s largest city and has an amazing selection of LGBTQ+ friendly places to stay, and great bars and clubs to enjoy a tipple or two (*ten) to help dance the night away.
Last but not least, you wouldn’t be getting a thorough New Zealand experience without going to a Rugby game, so get yourself to the NZ Falcons RFC team in Auckland, New Zealand’s only gay rugby team.
  Guadalajara – Mexico
Now I told you there might be some ones you weren’t expecting and I can probably guess that this is one of them?! Well let me tell you why you should be visiting Guadalajara if you’re embarking on some LGBTQ+ friendly travels.
Despite some high profile conservative politicians in the country, namely the President and the Mayor of the city; Guadalajara is a fairly safe space for the LGBTQ+ community, with many gay-owned and run places to stay and eat. Of course with all major cities is always worth keeping your wits about you when the sun goes down.
While in Guadalajara you must immerse yourself in the Mexican culture, and this means food. Mexico has one of the most intriguing cuisines in the world and Guadalajara is no exception to this, with street food and well priced restaurants a plenty make sure you fill those bellies with some Mexican munch.
And of course if you do manage to find yourself sampling some of Mexico’s liquid based treats, namely Tequila, then there is a great gay night scene around the Avenida Prisciliano Sanchez to dance the night away!
If this has got you excited some Mexican magic, then check out our Travel guide for the Latin American nation: Travel Mexico
  Berlin
From one of my more ‘out there’ suggestions to one of the most classic destinations for the LGBTQ+ community. Berlin is about as LGBTQ+ friendly as a city can get, in fact it has the oldest gay village in the world, Schöneberg, which dates back to the 1920s although it did temporarily stop for a while due to some historical events…
I suppose when it comes to Berlin, we cannot ignore the incredible Queer nightlife. There is of course the famous Berghain which of course I was refused entry to… I even had the full black clothing and panda eyes and still apparently wasn’t a fit for the club; but don’t let my sour grapes stop you from trying! There is KitKat as well, which might be the place to explore some of your more niche desires, shall I say. There are so many more amazing queer clubs in Berlin, I could write a whole blog on that alone, actually I might just do that one day!
Of course I must mention Berlin Pride which is one of the biggest Prides in all of Europe, probably the world actually! It takes place in the second half of July every year, with it falling on Saturday 27th this year, if you’re looking for a Pride to rival London then Berlin is the one for you.
Away from the incredible LGBTQ+ scene that Berlin has to offer you, there is so much more to explore in this great melting pot of a city. Whether that’s from sampling a fine Turkish kebab to learning about some of the darker times in the city’s history.
Must do in Berlin: Visit the Jewish Museum, even if you’re not a Museum person this is a must, one of the best things I have ever done on my travels.
  Austin – USA
Austin, the capitol of Texas?! Yes you heard me right, Austin has a thriving gay scene, so don’t let the idea of being out in Texas put you off this vibrant metropolitan hub.
For the best gay-friendly neighborhoods then get yourself to East Austin, South Congress and Downtown Austin.
This city has so much to offer in terms of history, head down to the ‘Texas State Capitol’ building to find out all about the history of Texas, an incredible area of North America which was part of Mexico at one point! Oh and I cannot forget to mention the fact that Austin is the live music hub of America, why? Because simply put, it has more live music venues per person than anywhere else in the USA. And you can’t ignore the amazing Austin City Limits’ festival, but be quick because it books up super fast.
If you want to escape the rat-race of the city and you’re feeling adventurous, then head to Hippie Hallow Park for the gay beach at Lake Travis, where clothing is not necessarily a requirement!
Something to think about: If you’re heading off to Austin in the November time, then you MUST get yourself to the Austin International Drag Fest!
Want to explore more about Austin: Travel Austin
  Montevideo – Uruguay
Frequently rated as one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world by Lonely Planet, this South American city should be a must on your LGBTQ+ travel list.
Did you know that the Tango was initially a dance between two men? No I didn’t either! So if you want to get yourself into the South American swing of things, then there are many a queer-friendly dance classes for you.
One of the best things to do in Montevideo is just walk… You’ll be mesmerised by the 12 mile wide city adorned by neoclassical architecture. Throughout your walks you will come across the Plaza Indepencia, a stunning square where there’s a 24-hour honour guard protecting the remains of Uruguayan Independence hero, José Artigas!
If you want to practice your newly found dance moves then Montevideo offers an incredible night life, with bars aplenty and some incredible gay-friendly clubs; just remember that things start a bit later in Uruguay so don’t be getting to the club any time before midnight!
Oh and I can’t forget to mention the amazing wine you can sample in Montevideo, so if you’re feet are hurting then sit back and grab a glass of Malbec.

Kids Dance Classes - Details Parents Should Know
We had been on the Radiance of the Seas for the western Caribbean cruise on November 28/04. This was our second cruise with Royal Caribbean with our initial last year on the larger Journey of the Seas. Following one cruise with RCI, I anticipated roughly the same requirements with the Radiance and in common, I wasn't disappointed. November nineteenth is the working day to mark on your calendar for Sarasota Ballet Venture at 8pm at Ruth Eckerd Hall, located at 1111 McMullen Booth Street Clearwater. Tickets prices are $68, $58, $48 and $38.

Long Island is also home to tons of fantastic wildlife. With locations like the protected Pine Barrens and wildlife refuges like the one located in Quogue. There are miles of trails to hike and animals to spy! A fantastic place for chicken watcher enthusiasts, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts of all types!

Unfortunately, many mothers and fathers can no longer afford to place their kids in dance classes, sports activities classes, and so on. Ballet footwear are worn by trainee ballet dancers until their toes and toes are sturdy sufficient to permit them to stand 'en pointe' meaning on the tips of their toes. Fill teapots with lemonade (which your daughter can help make) and allow the girls pour their own. It is barely possible to find this kind of all spherical entertainment especially developed for the occasion of hen night celebrations anywhere in London. Restricted Too has a nice selection of denim, khakis, brief, and capris that are perfect for college and perform. The evening shows at the Aurora Theatre were a mix of the ship's own crew of dancers and singers plus some outdoors comics and singers. In general, the exhibits were fairly great. We would have favored them to combine up the entertainment every evening instead than allocate music, comedy and magic into different evenings. Rather than an whole show of magic, we would have preferred every evening featuring a variety of enjoyment. Reside songs around the ship was a good additional touch.

Another thing is to stay absent from the booze at this point as well because that only will make you really feel worse as it is a depressant and the drunk dialing your ex girlfriend is by no means a good factor. Also the subsequent day when you are hung over places you in a poor depressed condition. There are a lot of things that you can do to improve your positive thinking and, consequently, improve your snoring. Become the person who is a good influence and positive feelings will come with it. I loved taking dance classes as a teen, and sometimes I nonetheless skip becoming in a studio, listening to and feeling the music, studying combinations and permitting my entire physique to transfer freely and organically. At any time really feel like that? Or maybe you sometimes feel a little stale in your yoga apply and you want to add a little mind-physique variety. Maybe you've just been watching So You Believe You Can Dance and considering that all that dancing looks like a lot of fun. What the experts, this kind of as these noticed on "Dancing with the Stars", have is some thing much more than just steps. They've received personality and mindset. Every dance not only has a set of actions, it also has a story to inform and to inform the story, and as the here dancer you require to specific the correct mindset for each dance.
Quality Dance Classes
Center's dance director, Jenna Jones, is an alumnus of New Mexico's Venture in Movement. Project In Movement has scheduled a display they state is a mesmerizing adaption of the Shakespearian traditional, A Midsummer Evening's Dream. The show will run from March eight-17 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Coming Up in September at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Middle at one hundred and http://www.dance101.org/ one South Pinellas Avenue, get your Greek on with Greek dance classes beginning September seventh on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. Advance courses are $30 for four classes or $8 drop in. Another good suggestion is to try stomach dancing. Aside from getting an fulfilling humorous moments, it also provides you an assurance to a flatten belly quick. Try performing it with your friends and giggle together. Other than enjoying their business, it also works well for your desired target.

There are other people who aren't phased at all by the video clip. It phone calls into query what would get their attention if these 7 year olds sporting spandex lingerie, hefty makeup and shaking their physique like a twenty yr previous doesn't even make them consider a 2nd look. Ready to get your Nia on? Right here are a couple of locations in DFW where you can get moving. If you don't reside near to any of these places, shoot me an email and I'll do my best to discover you a Nia course close by. Happy dancing!

As I mentioned in my last post, I was planning on visiting the Isle of Wight. I booked my ticket in advance, since I understand traveling on a ferry is not like hotels; where you can get a discount if you rock up late.
It is not cheap to move a van to the Isle of Wight. Why anyone goes there is beyond me. If I didn’t have friends there I probably would have just said sod to the whole thing. What didn’t help was that I got the return trip for 80 quid, only to have my session time out and have the price go up to 150. Sneaky internet. Of course I didn’t pay that much, I went down to the Red Funnel office and made nice with the receptionist who helped me out and got my tickets back down to 100. Although such a price came with a 5:15AM ferry (Having spent a lot of my life working night shifts I’m at least used to such a horrible wake up time, although the ordeal was still painful).
On top of that, I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about taking the ferry. I haven’t taken a ferry since I was about ten and at the time I, obviously, was not responsible for driving, or anything much beyond nagging my parents to feed me. This time was rather different, having to drive onto the ferry in Enid; the fantastic gear dropping camper van.
I am pleased to report it was quite uneventful, although rather exciting, since, Enid being so tall, I got put right in the belly of the boat with all the lorry’s and some heavy duty crane equipment that was being moved.
I collected the animals, got myself an absurdly overpriced coffee and enjoyed watching the sun rise as I sailed across with some very unhappy pets.

First impression; that there is a weird high vis vest trend on the Isle of Wight.
I thought at first it was just because I was seeing dock workers, but no, people out walking their dogs early, kids on their way to school. I met up with my friend in McDonalds for a coffee and everyone except us was wearing a high vis vest. I rather felt that I should get one to blend in.
My friend met me in McD’s near the port because they were heading out (to return in the evening) as I was coming in. We parted ways after a disgusting McD’s breakfast, him giving me directions to his place on the very south of the island in a village called Ventna.
I did not realize how small the Isle of Wight actually is.
Took me half an hour to get there.
Of course, the first thing I did was take Caspian and try to find the beach. It was an easy task accomplished in ten minutes and, although the sand beach is quite small, it is very nice, clean sand with a variety of places to eat and drink along the front, and a costal path running up the cliffs either side.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I found a dinosaur maze, which I had to go in because it was advertised as both free and amazing, and how often do you find something like that?
Me and Caspian spent our first afternoon running up and down the hills and enjoying the sea air, and that night we were taken out (because Ventna is one of those place where dogs are welcome everywhere, which gets it a tick from me) to experience a night out in the village.
Now, for those not in the know (like I wasn’t before I rocked up) but the Isle of Wight, being situated where it is, i.e. directly between Brazil and the rest of the UK, is quite a cheap place to go and find drugs, are you so inclined.
It’s personally not to my tastes, but it apparently is to…. Pretty much everyone on the Isle of Wight.  It makes for a slightly more relaxed atmosphere than you might find in the average pub, which was nice, although the flip side of it is it’s very difficult to understand a large portion of the people in there.
But still, the evening was nice, we grabbed some Indian food and I met some of the locals; an absurdly rude man and his lovely son, a woman known to most people because she refuses to move on from the 80’s and take her thigh high sparkly boots off, and a girl who, don’t get me wrong was lovely to talk to, but unusual to me in that she had not only never left the Isle of Wight, but was reluctant to even leave the town of Ventna.
I actually found this reluctance to be a recurring theme the longer I stayed. I started to suspect the residents of Ventna were under the influence of some sophoriphic drug, perhaps something in the water, as no one seemed willing to leave, the main town of Newport being “such a long way” (remember my comment earlier on how tiny the island is) , and I was worried about my leaving early Friday morning as I started to wonder if, in true horror move fashion, I would wake to find my tires gone and a note on my windscreen saying “It’s such a long way, now you can stay.”
This lethargy wasn’t just in people’s personal attitudes though, it was also in their professional outlook. It baffles me how anything ever gets done out there. Everyone is late for everything, shops just don’t open if they don’t feel like it, my friend openly admitted to having gone through near ten tradesman before he found one even willing to turn up. One day there I ventured into Newport (despite the apparent distance) with the aim of getting my laptop repaired. Of the four IT repair shops in Newport only one of them would take it, the rest shrugged and yawned and one of the guys was obviously so off his face I’m not 100% sure he thought I was real.
I’m sure the last man I spoke to only deigned to look at my laptop because I got quite upset, “I will pay literally anything for you to fix this,” I begged him. It was true enough, it is difficult to write and blog with no laptop after all.
He took it for an hour, inspected it and then gave it back to me, still sodding broken!! Refusing to do anything else because he “can’t figure what’s wrong. It’s broken though.” How foolish of me, to have brought my broken laptop into a computer repair shop!
Calm now.
In all fairness he didn’t charge me at least, but I’m very confused as to how Island businesses make money if this is how they all function.
But, laptop frustration aside, the Isle of Wight is actually very nice for a holiday or if you’re getting to that stage of your life when you don’t mind things moving infuriatingly slowly.
Because it is beautiful and, even though my friends have only been living there four months, they can’t go into town without getting caught up in conversation with someone else because there’s this great community feel. The weather is lovely. I’m here in the middle of October and it’s been sunny five days out of seven.
I had quite a fitness week, went on a few runs along the beach, went to my friends Pilate’s class. I almost joined in a senior’s dance event with 50s/60s music, but I left before things really picked up so I missed the best bits (like my friend realizing her knickers were too loose and dancing the whole event commando, because she’s a classy girl).
We did have another night out where we went to see live music, from a guitarist who was a session guitarist for Pink Floyd back in the day. He was really good. Although I will admit I had to leave half way through, since I had been up
since about 4 looking for a certain dog, who decided to take herself for a walk.
Now, I don’t want you guys to think I’m a bad owner. But the first evening when we went out my friend offered to let me sleep in their spare bed, exhausted from Southampton and a little sniffley with possibly the beginnings of a cold, I was quite keen on a warm night’s sleep in a real bed.
However, the catch was Caspian could not come in the house, because the resident cats were frightened of her.
It would be fine, I reasoned, for one night, as long as I checked on her first and last thing, and made sure Enid was secure and out the way.
I woke up at four in the morning feeling terrible, wracked with quilt, and ran out the house to see her.
And Caspian had escaped.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
I’ll save you the worry and assure you I did find her, or, more accurately, the dog warden did. So that was our (expensive) drama for the week.
One more thing worth mentioning about the Isle of Wight that doesn’t really fit well into this story was my friend’s ring. I didn’t realize but there are a few pearl farms on the Isle of Wight and she’d been hoping to get a ring from one for a while, and did so while I was visiting, I’d like to share it here because it was actually very pretty.
Drama and professional frustrations aside, the week was nice, sea air is always a mood lifter, and it was nice to catch up with the friend I’ve not seen in a few months.
Next time; a flying trip to London.
#travelblog I visit the most relaxed place in the whole of England and nearly get trapped there #isleofwight #animalblog As I mentioned in my last post, I was planning on visiting the Isle of Wight. I booked my ticket in advance, since I understand traveling on a ferry is not like hotels; where you can get a discount if you rock up late.
