Today we were off to an early start of the rally. At 7:00 o‘clock we took off from Cape Town to the Cape of Good Hope and from there via the Lourens Pass to Franschoek, the French wine region east of Cape Town.
The roads chosen were excellent and we had no problems with the car! In the beginning we drove alongside the coast down to the Cape with almost no traffic. Everyone was heading into the town while we left it driving south on the peninsula. White sandy beaches ideal for surfers and a constant change between a lush and rugged landscape. The winds close to the Cape forces nature to duck down in low shrubs which grow in various colors over rocky plains and hills. The Cape of Good Hope is not the most southern tip of Africa but certainly the most prominent. We were the first ones there and were the only ones who hiked up to the lighthouse as well. The funicular was out of order today.
We then continued back northbound alongside the coast. Everything was meticulously kept clean. We drove through various villages nestled on the hillside or built directly at the beaches. Muizenberg we found especially picturesque.
It required some time before we realized that we are not on the clock and that we actually can stop to take pictures whenever we want. The absence of competitive sections makes it easy on the cars.
From the south we then had a transit section before leaving the main roads towards Franschoek. The weather was very pleasant with temperatures around 25 degrees celsius.
Before heading down to Franschoek we drove through fruit plantations which covered the hills all the way to the horizon.
After a superb late lunch at the winery „Haute Cabriére“ we headed for the Franschoek Hotel & Spa to spend the night!

Coonawarra Wineries: Where Tradition Meets Terroir
Introduction: The Vinicultural Marvel of Coonawarra Wineries
Nestled in the picturesque Limestone Coast of South Australia, Coonawarra stands as a beacon of vinicultural excellence. Its wineries, perched on the terra rossa soil, are not just places to taste exquisite wines; they are sanctuaries where tradition, passion, and terroir converge. Coonawarra wineries offer a profound exploration into the art of winemaking, inviting enthusiasts to revel in the flavors and aromas that define this unique region.
The Terroir of Coonawarra: Nature’s Canvas for Fine Wines
Coonawarra's terroir is its greatest asset. The vibrant red soil, a blend of clay and limestone, imparts a distinct minerality to the grapes grown here. Coupled with a cool maritime climate, this terroir becomes the canvas upon which winemakers paint their masterpieces. The Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, thrives in this environment, producing wines of unparalleled depth and complexity. The unique characteristics of Coonawarra wines are a testament to this extraordinary marriage between soil and climate.
The Legacy of Coonawarra Winemakers: Artisans of Flavor
The winemakers of Coonawarra are not just cultivators; they are guardians of a rich legacy. Families have passed down their winemaking traditions through generations, each bottle a testament to years of expertise and dedication. Whether it's crafting bold Cabernets or delicate Chardonnays, these artisans infuse every drop with the essence of their land and heritage. Each winery carries a unique story, blending history with innovation, and offering a glimpse into the passionate world of Coonawarra winemaking.
Varietals: A Symphony of Tastes and Aromas
Coonawarra wineries boast an impressive array of varietals, each a tribute to the region's versatility and skill. The Cabernet Sauvignon, rightfully the flagship grape, is a bold revelation of blackcurrant, mint, and spice. Shiraz, with its deep plum and peppery notes, offers a robust alternative. Merlot, with its velvety texture and plum undertones, caters to those with a preference for softer reds. The whites, especially Chardonnay, add a touch of elegance with their citrus and melon nuances. Every varietal from Coonawarra is a testament to the region's mastery of the grapevine.
Cellar Doors and Tasting Experiences: A Sojourn for the Senses
Visiting a Coonawarra cellar door is akin to embarking on a sensory voyage. The lush vineyards, neatly rowed and basking in the Australian sun, set the stage for an unforgettable experience. Inside, wine enthusiasts are greeted by knowledgeable sommeliers who guide them through tastings of the finest vintages. These encounters are not just about the wines; they are conversations about the land, the grape, and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into every bottle. It's an education in every sip, a communion with the very essence of Coonawarra.
Sustainable Practices: Nurturing Nature for Future Generations
Coonawarra winemakers recognize their responsibility towards the environment. Many wineries have adopted sustainable practices, embracing organic viticulture, water conservation, and eco-friendly initiatives. These efforts are not only a testament to their dedication to preserving the land but also a pledge to produce wines that are as responsible as they are delightful. Coonawarra's commitment to sustainability ensures that future generations can continue to revel in the region's vinicultural wonders.
Culinary Adventures: Pairing Perfection
Coonawarra wineries offer more than just wines; they invite guests on a culinary odyssey. Many estates boast exquisite restaurants where gourmet chefs create menus that harmonize seamlessly with the wines. From decadent cheese platters that elevate the tasting experience to meticulously crafted multi-course meals, the food and wine pairings in Coonawarra are a celebration of flavors. Each dish complements the wines, enhancing both the food and the drink and offering an epicurean delight for the senses.
Conclusion: Raising a Glass to Coonawarra’s Vinous Heritage
In the lush vineyards of Coonawarra, every grape carries a legacy, every bottle tells a story. Raising a glass of Coonawarra wine is not just a toast; it's a salute to generations of winemakers who have transformed humble grapes into liquid poetry. It's an acknowledgment of the land, the climate, and the passion that breathe life into every vintage. Coonawarra wineries are not just producers of wine; they are creators of memories, encapsulating the essence of a region where tradition meets terroir in every exquisite sip.

Breweries Block 15 Buoy Beer and Sunriver collaborate to support the Ocean Blue Project with the release of Where Rivers Meet Pale Ale.
Press Release
On June 14th, Sunriver Brewing, Block 15 Brewing, and Buoy Beer announce their collaboration efforts in celebration of World Ocean Day with a beer release and beach clean up to benefit nonprofit Ocean Blue Project. The beach clean-up will be held in Newport, OR on June 24th from 1 to 4 pm at the Historic Nye Beach (aka “the Turn Around”), with beer release from 5 - 8 pm at the Taphouse at Nye Creek in Nye Beach.
The concept behind the beer was inspired by an effort to broaden awareness of Ocean Blue Project’s mission to our industry. “With all three breweries located by 3 major river waterways, Where Rivers Meet pale ale is a representation of our awareness and impact that our distance from the ocean is still connected by these rivers.” Buoy Beer Marketing Manager Jessyka Dart-Mclean explains. Sunriver Brewery, located by the Deschutes River, and Block 15, by the Willamette River, are significant tributaries to the Columbia River, located by Buoy Beer.
About the Beer
Where Rivers Meet Pale Ale was crafted and brewed by all three breweries on May 26th in Sunriver, OR. Head Brewer Patrick Raasch describes the beer as “a light-colored, clear, West Coast-style Pale Ale with a bright citrus and tropical hop character”. The beer will be available on draft and in cans throughout Oregon and at the three brewery locations after the launch party in Newport.
While developing the beer concept and recipe, the breweries recognized the impact of sourcing ingredients from sustainable suppliers. “We brewed with a selection of Salmon-Safe hops from some of Oregon’s finest hop growers – Crystal from Goschie Farms, Strata from Coleman AG, and Estate Grown Comet and Chinook from Crosby Hop Farm.” Brett Thomas, Sunriver Brewing Director of Brewing Ops, explains.
About the Beach Clean-Up & Beer Release
Join all three breweries for a day in Newport, OR, on June 24th from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Historic Nye Beach area and Nye Creek Tap House from 5 to 8 pm to join in on the efforts and try Where Rivers Meet Pale Ale.
About Ocean Blue Project
Ocean Blue Project is a grassroots, boots-on-the-sand nonprofit founded in Newport, Oregon, by Richard and Fleet Arterbury, father-and-son tribal members of the Choctaw Nation. Their organization is built around one vision: to restore the world’s oceans, beaches, and rivers to pristine, self-sustaining ecosystems where wildlife and human communities can coexist and thrive.
Because everything flows downstream and the ocean is a mirror reflection of our city streets, Ocean Blue Project educates, empowers, and lends technical expertise to communities and governments around the world to support microplastic recovery, river restoration, and programs that teach kids to be stewards of the earth and wildlife.
“Supporting nonprofits like Ocean Blue Project is crucial for our communities. With their efforts, we can raise awareness for sustainability efforts while getting our fans involved. At Block 15, we believe good stewardship goes hand and hand with producing quality beer, and we are happy to roll our sleeves up.” Block 15 Brewing Marketing & Creative Manager Kelsea De Filippis explains.

Perched along a stunning coastal hillside @harmonycellars overlooks the quaint hamlet of Harmony, CA, with vineyards that aren’t visible from this famous viewpoint. In fact, a high magnesium content in the soil make for not-so suitable growing conditions 😔. But fear not, dear friends 😃! This situation suits winemaker/owner Chuck just fine. Untethered by a single estate, Chuck is able to offer a diverse selection of wines, all of which are crafted in Harmony for your sensory enjoyment. Head to the tasting room + sample iconic wines sourced from stellar fruit grown along the Central Coast from Monterey to Santa Margarita in the south. When paired with Harmony Cellars’ epic views, the whole package comes together. Some might say it’s a perfect blend. Located on the coast between Cambria + Cayucos (25 min from Paso) + it’s a fave getaway for locals + visitors alike that takes you driving on stunning Hwy 46 West to the quaint, artisan town of Harmony (pop 18!) off scenic Hwy 1. It’s one of the smallest towns established in 1872 around a dairy that produced milk + cheese. As the only winery in town, @harmonycellars tasting room has the advantage of being situated on the hill overlooking the tiny town with views of the coastal countryside. Kim + Chuck Mulligan, started the winery in 1989, no surprise, as wine runs thick in her blood. Her great-grandfather, Giacomo Barlogio, a founder of the old creamery cooperative, used to make wine in his basement - exactly what we expect from an Italian. 4 generations later, the winery sits on the family’s original landholdings. After savoring their wines while lounging on the lawn that overlooks the coastal rolling hills + happy grazing cows, we love going for a hike along the water at Harmony Headlands State Park on Hwy 1 south of the winery. Guaranteed, you'll come away with a cheery smile, sparkling memories + happy lungs revived by the fresh ocean air. This is one to repeat time after time. Wine Pick: Grandpa Barlogio Zin Special anniversary label is a tribute to owner Kim’s great grandfather, the founder of the Harmony Valley Creamery. This is a jammy Zin with intense flavors of raspberry, boysenberry + cranberry. (at Harmony Cellars) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cq53M2IJK-o/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

April 6, 2023 - Day 100
Cape Town, South Africa
We spent three days in Cape Town and it wasn’t nearly enough time to really visit the place. It was the end of the third leg of the trip so the ship changed a lot of the crew out and about 200 passengers left the ship and were replaced with new ones. An opportunity to meet a whole set of new folks.
On the first day we went to the Boschendal winery which was founded in 1685 to attend a party arranged by the ship. The place has accommodations and a lot of South Africans go on holiday at the winery. It is a beautiful operating winery with a spectacular garden and great wine.
On the second day we took a bus tour to the Cape of Good Hope. The drive reminded me of the Highway 1 drive between San Francisco and LA. There is a beautiful road along the sea coast where they have a 50 Kilometer marathon every year. It was build by Italian POW’s during the Second World War. The big rock in the photo is called the sentinel. There are about 10000 seal’s living along the sea coast below the sentinel. It is a very dramatic beautiful drive on a two lane road carved out of the side of a granite mountain in a bus which makes meeting a car very interesting.
Not everything is perfect however. We went through a seaside town named Haut Bay where there were many people sitting on the curb looking for day work. The unemployment rate is 90%. The current going rate is about $15/day to hire one.
We visited the last point of land at the Cape of Good Hope and climbed up to the lighthouse marking the Cape. The place is in a national park so there were wild ostriches and baboons. We then went to a beach that is a nesting place for African penguins and had lunch. Finally we visited a garden that was part of the Cecil Rhodes estate. Rhodes and his brother Herbert found the Kimberly Diamond deposit and he became the richest man in the world. The garden is 54 hectares and has some plants that are nearly extinct.
On the third day we just walked around the Cape Town waterfront. We probably saw about 5% of what is in Cape Town. I met a man you does 30 day safari trips starting in Cape Town and ending at Victoria Falls. That would be a lot of fun.
