Hurricane Helene makes landfall in Florida as a catastrophic Category 4 storm.
Hurricane Helene has made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region as a catastrophic storm, battering the area with winds exceeding 130 mph and posing a threat of a potentially "unsurvivable" 20-foot storm surge along with heavy rainfall.
Weather Forecast For 32827 - Orlando FL:
weather-32827
flickr
Major Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region as a catastrophic Category 4 cyclone, unleashing hurricane-force winds and threatening a potentially "unsurvivable" 20-foot storm surge along with heavy rainfall.
Helene struck around Taylor County, Florida, between Tallahassee and Tampa, with its effects felt hundreds of miles away. At least two fatalities were reported in Wheeler County, Georgia, where a mobile home was damaged amid numerous Tornado Warnings.
The storm surge was severe enough to prompt water rescues from the Big Bend to Southwest Florida, with reports of mobile homes floating in the coastal town of Steinhatchee.
Power outages have surged as Hurricane Helene’s winds batter Florida. Over a million residents in the Sunshine State were left without power as wind gusts approached or even surpassed hurricane-force levels. St. Petersburg recorded a gust of 82 mph, while Sarasota experienced a wind gust of 74 mph.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in 79936 El Paso TX:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/202335507/Weather-Forecast-For-79936-El-Paso-TX
Significant outages were also reported in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
FOX Weather's Ian Oliver reported that the surge rapidly submerged streets around St. Pete Beach on Thursday evening, even with high tide still several hours away.
Further south, in a community called Sunset Beach, local fire rescue announced they could no longer respond to service calls due to the flooding.
Clearwater Beach experienced its highest surge since at least the Superstorm of 1993, reaching over 7 feet.
The storm surge continued to pose a serious threat as the system moved up the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Due to Helene's massive size, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of a significant risk of life-threatening storm surge along the entire west coast of the Florida Peninsula and the Big Bend region.
The highest inundation from Hurricane Helene was forecasted to reach up to 20 feet of storm surge flooding from Carrabelle to the Suwannee River in Florida. Areas such as Apalachicola and Chassahowitzka were expected to experience storm surges of 10-15 feet.
youtube
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that a "catastrophic and deadly storm surge" is likely along parts of the Florida Big Bend coast, with inundation potentially reaching 20 feet above ground level and accompanied by destructive waves. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee described the anticipated storm surge into Apalachee Bay as "catastrophic and potentially unsurvivable."
Helene's effects will extend well beyond the coastal regions of the Big Bend, with hurricane-force gusts expected across Tallahassee and into Georgia as the storm moves inland overnight into Friday morning. The storm's size and speed mean it will retain its strength further inland than most hurricanes.
Although Helene was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane within an hour of making landfall, its impacts are anticipated to persist for several days. Significant rainfall could lead to widespread and potentially catastrophic flash flooding across the Southeast.
During the hurricane, the Florida Highway Patrol reported a serious accident on Interstate 4 in Tampa that resulted in a fatality.
A video from the Florida Department of Transportation showed a highway sign dislodged and resting on a vehicle.
Troopers have not disclosed the cause of the crash but urged residents to remain at home until the worst of the weather has passed.

3 Murder Suspects Escaped Prison Across the Country
By Jenna Kokish, The Ohio State University Class of 2024
July 13, 2023
Tumblr media
In a bizarre lineup of events, three murder suspects from three different prisons have escaped custody and were on the run, these three escapees are not related and all three occurred in separate incidents. Eric Abril was arrested on April 6th after he shot a California Highway Patrol officer in an ambush and took two hostages at gunpoint at a Roseville Park. At 35-years-old, Abril was able to escape from the medical facility located in Roseville, a suburb of Sacramento. At this medical facility, he was supposed to be under 24-hour surveillance due to Abril being described as a “very dangerous fugitive.” According to Woo, a sheriff’s deputy saw Abril right after he escaped, but after a foot chase, he was unable to keep his eye on Abril and lost him. It is unspecified what Abril was in the Sutter Roseville Medical Center for, but he was transported there on Thursday, July 6th, and escaped on Sunday, July 9th. After a manhunt ensued, Abril was captured and taken back into custody on Monday, July 10th, around 12:20 p.m. What led to his capture was him being spotted by a homeowner and a dog, 6 miles from where he escaped, in a residential area of Rocklin, California.
Another of the murder suspects that escaped, Chadwick Shane Mobley escaped custody on Sunday, July 9th, in Sanders County. Mobley was being transported by a private company from Lincoln County when he was able to slip out of his handcuffs and ankle shackles. Mobley is wanted for the 2011 murder of Andrea Eilber, who was shot to death in Michigan. His arrest comes for the murder of Eilber due to evidence from the scene of the homicide being tested. Mobley initially was arrested in Libby, Montana, in June, and was waiting to be transferred to Michigan for his arraignment. Mobley was then able to escape at a gas station in Montana while being transported from Montana to Michigan. On Monday, July 10th, the suspect was apprehended, and the police had regained custody of Mobley in Plains, Montana.
The last of the three murder suspects to escape custody, Michael Burham. Burham has yet to be apprehended and is still on the loose. Burham was last seen in the prison on Thursday, July 6th, it is said that he was able to make his way through the jail’s gym to the rooftop, where he was then able to climb down the building with a rope made of bedsheets around 11:20 p.m. According to Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens, “we do believe that he is getting some assistance. We are prepared to prosecute anyone who does offer him assistance.” With Burham on the loose, police are searching high and low. The police have advised citizens to maintain locking their doors, and if they happen to see Burham, to not approach him and to call the police immediately due to how dangerous Burham is. Burham is an Army veteran with survivalist and firearm training. Burham has been arrested for the murder and rape of a New York woman, and a kidnapping charge with related charges following. While trying to escape from the police prior to his arrest in May, Burham is said to have kidnapped an elderly couple and made them drive him to South Carolina where he left them and stole their car. Police were able to arrest Burham in South Carolina on May 24th, 2023. As the manhunt continues for Burham, investigators have stated that they have found “small stockpiles or campsites,” in wooded areas and they are believed to be associated with Burham. It is now day six of the manhunt for Burham, with no leads to where he is, investigators are confident about regaining him in custody, and the public has their eye out to help guide officers in the right direction.
Although all three incidents were separate and none of the murder suspects are linked to each other, having three inmates escape three different prisons within mere days of each other is quite the coincidence. With two of the three suspects back in custody, a manhunt for the third suspect remains at large. State and local police believe they are on his trail and have confidence in regaining him and putting him back in custody.

— Colorado Springs, CO —
Two in the morning - the side of the highway.
Her ribs were screaming, if they actually could - that would be how bad the pain was from being stomped on three times by the fugitive she had come to Colorado to catch. Bruising was definitely already formed, even under the vest she could tell -- and here she was ... lying across the back seat of her rental in agony. The last bit of her strength had been used to crawl into the car so she didn't end up run over when traffic picked up again. That was a few hours from now when people were leaving their homes for work … … and by the time she was found? Lourdes could easily be a goner … or slipped into a coma from the pain and the cold that was seeping into her bones from not turning the rental's heat on. Or grabbing the emergency thermal blankets she had bought that were in the trunk.
— You know what else was in the trunk? Flares, and a flare gun. She H A D T O get up. Gritting her teeth and muffling a pained scream through them, harsh breath puffed out like a bull ready to charge as she sat up. Slowly sliding across the back seat through the open door and keeping one arm wrapped around her ribs, certain that a few of them were at least fractured or completely broken. Staggering as she leaned against the side of the rental, Lourdes pressed the button on the key fob that unlocked the trunk and heard it pop open just as she rounded the tail light and almost fell in as a last resort. Shaking from both the cold and the blinding pain, she dropped a flare a few times back in the trunk before sliding it in properly and shooting it up into the air. "... One more just in case," She whispered out before firing another flare up into the night sky. Picking up both of the road flares, she walked as slowly as she could away from the trunk. Removing the cap from the end of the flare in order to strike it like a match, before dropping it on the road at least two feet from the driver's side of the vehicle. The pain was too much for her now, dropping the second flare under the car while staggering back to the trunk and tipping over the edge in a very ungraceful manner.
Lourdes did her best to open up one of the emergency thermal blankets, gritting her teeth and breathing harshly as she wrapped it around her … before the pain caused her to pass out.
— TWO DAYS LATER // Centura Penrose Hospital —
The steady beeping of the heart monitor and the pain medication wearing off is what caused Lourdes to slowly wake up. The nurse had just walked in to check on her and almost jumped out of her skin, " LYDIA ! LYDIA ! PAGE THE DOCTOR ! SHE'S AWAKE ! I'll get you some ice chips, there's some state cops who want to speak with you. " Without so much as another word, the nurse raced off as the other nurse behind the desk was paging the doctor who was in charge of Lourdes' care. Feeling around blindly on either side of the bed, she tested the rail buttons in order to ease herself into an upright position when the nurse and two state patrol officers came walking into the room. The nurse brought over the cup with the ice slivers and fed them carefully to her with a spoon. God, her throat was so dry and scratchy – she'd kill for some tea with lots of honey right now. These ice chips would do though.
" Ms. Rasmussen, we're certain you are fuzzy on the details of how you got here — a good citizen of this city saw both your flares and called it in. We arrived moments later and rushed you here. We returned to the scene to check the vehicle and found your bounty hunter's license and the file you have … on the fugitive you're chasing down for the lovely state of South Carolina. " One of the cops said while she was carefully sucking down the ice chips. " … I regret to inform you that your fugitive is still on the loose … and has murdered three more people. He is now … a serial killer – as his body count is more than three. "
Lourdes swallowed deeply, "... I need to get out of here. Right now. He is HUNTING down the son of the first couple…" She coughed hard and her throat was stinging like multiple wasps had stung her. ".... Because that kid is his legal son…" Breathing shakily, she rested her head back and took the cup gently from the nurse as the doctor walked in. "'ey 'oc — 'ad 'ews 'irst?" She said faintly while shoveling a few more ice chips into her mouth. The nurse looking towards the doctor as the two state cops moved into the hallway to radio dispatch.

The Orangeburg massacre refers to the shooting of protesters by South Carolina Highway Patrol officers in Orangeburg on the South Carolina State University campus on the evening of February 8, 1968. About 200 protesters had demonstrated against racial segregation at a local bowling alley. Three of the protesters, African-American males, were killed, and 28 other protesters were injured. On February 5, 1968, a group of around 40 students from SCSU entered the bowling alley and left peacefully after they were asked to leave by Floyd. The next night more students led by John Stroman returned. Police were waiting for them, and several students were detained, including Stroman. Angry that protesters were being arrested. The crowd broke a window of the bowling alley, and chaos ensued. Police began beating student protesters with billy clubs. Eight students were sent to the hospital. A list of demands for integration and eliminating discrimination within the community. Governor Robert E. McNair responded by calling in the National Guard after commenting that black power advocates were running amok. Mostly student protesters gathered on the campus of SCSU to demonstrate against the continued segregation. At a press conference, the governor blamed the deaths on Black Power outside agitators and said the incident took place off campus, contrary to the evidence. The federal government brought charges against the state patrolmen in the first federal trial of police officers for using excessive force at a campus protest. The state patrol officers' defense was that they felt they were in danger, and protesters had shot at the officers first. All nine defendants were acquitted, although 36 witnesses stated they did not hear gunfire and no students were found to be carrying guns. In a state trial in 1970, the activist Cleveland Sellers was convicted of a charge of riot. He served seven months in state prison. He was the national program director of SNCC. He wrote The River of No Return: The Autobiography of a Black Militant and the Life and Death of SNCC. The governor of South Carolina pardoned Sellers in 1993. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CoZq8HbL8-i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hurricane Helene approaches landfall, bringing 'unsurvivable' storm surge to Florida's coast.
Helene intensified into a Category 4 hurricane with winds exceeding 140 mph, ahead of its expected landfall in Florida's Big Bend region.
Hurricane Helene intensified into a devastating Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds as it neared Florida's Big Bend region, threatening a potentially "unsurvivable" 20-foot storm surge, destructive hurricane-force winds, and heavy flooding.
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee issued an Extreme Wind Warning for several Big Bend counties ahead of the approaching eyewall.
Weather Forecast For 32810 - Orlando FL:
weather-32810
flickr
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Helene’s enormous size poses a significant risk of life-threatening storm surges along the entire west coast of the Florida Peninsula and the Big Bend region.
The highest storm surge, with up to 20 feet of flooding, is expected between Carrabelle and the Suwannee River in Florida, while areas like Apalachicola and Chassahowitzka are forecasted to see 10-15 feet of surge.
Power outages surge as Hurricane Helene’s winds batter Florida According to the latest NHC advisory, tropical storm conditions are affecting much of Florida's west coast. A wind gust of 82 mph was recorded near St. Petersburg on Thursday, with similar conditions in Sarasota, where a gust reached 74 mph.
Ahead of landfall, more than half a million customers were already without power, with outages also rising in Georgia and the Carolinas.
"A catastrophic and deadly storm surge is expected along parts of Florida's Big Bend coast, with water levels possibly reaching up to 20 feet above ground, accompanied by destructive waves," the NHC warned. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee described the anticipated storm surge in Apalachee Bay as "catastrophic and potentially unsurvivable."

FOX Weather's Ian Oliver reported that streets around St. Pete Beach were quickly submerged by the surge Thursday evening, even with high tide still hours away.
Further south in Sunset Beach, local fire rescue announced it would no longer respond to emergency calls due to severe flooding.
Clearwater Beach recorded its highest storm surge since the Superstorm of 1993, exceeding 7 feet.
Water Rescues Underway Along Florida's Gulf Coast
In Lee County, deputies were seen going door-to-door in Fort Myers Beach, searching for storm victims in need of assistance.
A storm surge exceeding 5 feet flooded roads, forcing deputies to use boats for rescue operations.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office also deployed a swamp buggy in the Margaritaville neighborhood along Fort Myers Beach to aid in the search efforts.
The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office in Florida's Big Bend urged residents who ignored mandatory evacuation orders for Hurricane Helene to write their name and identifying information on their arms or legs in permanent marker.
"Phase 2 of the storm will hit this evening when Helene makes landfall," said FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross. "Based on all indications, widespread damage is expected around Tallahassee, extending east, west, and far north into Georgia. These heavily wooded areas won't withstand the extreme winds, and power outages could last for weeks."
During the hurricane, the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a serious crash on Interstate 4, with one fatality possible.
A Florida Department of Transportation video showed a dislodged highway sign lying on a car. While the cause of the crash remains unclear, troopers urged residents to stay home until the worst of the storm passes.

A reminder of the devastation from 2018's Hurricane Michael Nearly all of Florida is under tropical weather alerts, with Tropical Storm Warnings stretching hundreds of miles inland into Georgia and the Carolinas, including the city of Atlanta.
NHC Director Dr. Michael Brennan spoke with FOX Weather on Thursday, urging residents to heed official instructions and evacuate immediately if directed to do so.
"The impacts of this storm are vast and will extend across multiple states, reaching into the Carolinas and southern Appalachians—bringing storm surge, hurricane and tropical storm force winds, and the potential for catastrophic rainfall," Brennan explained.
He referenced Hurricane Michael in 2018 to highlight the dangers of storm surge.
youtube
"When Hurricane Michael struck Mexico Beach in 2018, some people waited until the last minute to evacuate, and tragically, some drowned in their cars as the water rose too quickly for them to escape," Brennan said. "This is why it's crucial to follow evacuation orders from local officials and leave before the storm hits. Many areas still have time, but that time is quickly running out."
