Transformers: Mosaic #254 - "Syndicated Incorporated"
Originally posted on September 22nd, 2008

wada sez: Ending up sunk at the end of his spotlight episode “Garbage In, Garbage Out”, Animated Wreck-Gar was voiced by guest star “Weird Al” Yankovic, whose song “Dare to Be Stupid” (a “style parody” of new wave band Devo) soundtracked the Junkions’ appearance in The Transformers: The Movie. Wreck-Gar’s portrayal leaned into Weird Al’s persona, and this strip plays it up further; the title is the name of Weird Al’s parody of “Misery” by Soul Asylum, with the rewritten lyrics being from the perspective of someone obsessed with TV—much as the Wreck-Gar and the other Junkions were in The Movie. The opening dialogue here echoes a joke from the show, where Wreck-Gar proudly repeats Ratchet’s accusation that he is only good for one thing: garbage. Wreck-Gar discards Beast Wars Megatron’s rubber ducky, the Matrix of Leadership, and Vector Sigma, along with one of the necklaces he helped the Angry Archer get away with stealing. And of course, he ends up watching The Weird Al Show.

Jeff Buckley; The big album
Author: Stevie Chick
Date: May 6, 2000
From: The Times (London, England)
Publisher: NI Syndication Limited
JEFF BUCKLEY (9/10)
Mystery White Boy
(Columbia) Pounds 13.99*
FANTASY HAS long been a core ingredient of rock myth-making, and when a mythically talented rock artist dies, just as his dazzling promise begins to unfold, the potential for wild speculation is doubled. Without the possibility of future development or new material, the fans' impulse is to ransack the archives for more and more clues as to where the artist's muse may have taken them next, to cultivate a tissue of creative theories and "what ifs".
Recorded during his 1995-96 world tour, Mystery White Boy is not Jeff Buckley's first posthumous release; the album he was working on when he drowned in the Mississippi in 1997 was released a year later as (Sketches for) My Sweetheart the Drunk. It is also not Buckley's first in-concert issue - live releases of varying rarity having been available throughout his career (indeed, his debut recording was the solo-acoustic Live at Sin-e EP).
And yet, in every imaginable sense, Mystery White Boy is not only justified, but an essential release. For, as with Grace, the 1994 debut studio album that announced Buckley's prodigious talents, this album is a declaration of the commendable disregard he and his band had for the limits and conventions of what is termed "rock music". It stands as a testament to Buckley's eclectic soul, and his restless on-stage creativity.
So Mystery White Boy preserves for ever moments such as Buckley segueing Hallelujah into a cover of the Smiths' I Know it's Over, and
his radical, emotionally annihilating deconstruction of Big Star's
Kanga Roo. Critics slammed his performances of this period as self-indulgent, but given the essential drabness of most mainstream rock, and certainly the soul-destroying perfunctoriness of so much live performance today, such wilful playfulness and daredevil leaps of fancy deliver a rare thrill. Mystery White Boy proves that it wasn't the technical quality of Buckley's falsetto that made him special, rather the emotionally devastating way he wielded it (see the ragged, intense Grace, and a positively careworn Lilac Wine). This fact seems to have been lost on the glut of Buckley copyists who fall so short of the master in their passion for note-perfection.
The album also adds a further layer of intrigue to the circumstances of the artist's death, and his relationship with deceased troubadour father Tim Buckley. Jeff's snarling (at himself, with reference to Tim?) "You're just like him!" in Dream Brother is a truly chilling moment, as is the drowning fantasy (not present on the studio version) that closes the song. Coincidental, no doubt, but still disquieting.
Even among the smattering of unrecorded Buckley originals contained here, Mystery White Boy doesn't clearly indicate what direction his musical journey may have taken next. Instead, it's a momentary crystallisation of an unpredictable firebrand whose erratic creativity was an essential element of his music, and certainly the finest portrait of what he was about since Grace. Pull up a stool, and mourn the loss.

Ten Random Lines Tag

Rules: Pick any ten of your fics/writing projects, scroll to the midpoint, pick a line (or three) and share it. Then tag people (ten if you want to follow the theme).
Tagging: @theramwrites @puzzleddragon02 @saltysupercomputer @aether-wasteland-s @lexiklecksi and anyone else who wants to!
Okay I really only have 2 main WIPs but sure we can see snippets of some tiny things......
Second Chance I don’t even have to explain to Hayln why I am actually still alive, because it’s a null day (that really is a good name for it. On the Base we call it pre-day and post-day, in reference to when the reversal occurs). Except here’s the funny thing: Turns out, since I didn’t exist, the most natural thing to occur is for me to simply not exist for about 16 hours. When I explain to the Spirit that No, I am NOT okay with that, it says that if I really want to, we can resist that natural couse of events.
Syndicate He flashed a smile. “Morning, sleepyhead,” he said and came over, picking up mugs from the desk that I hadn’t noticed and bringing them over. He handed me one. “Got you coffee.” A string and tag on the side of his mug showed he was having tea.
Drake Knight I look to the sky, pausing three-quarters down the alley to catch a breath and attempt to wipe some of the coffee off the front of my shirt. It’s empty for a bit, just a gray sky, but then a shadow passes over us and I see it clearly for the first time. Nothing special, the dark gray scales indicate it’s probably from the mountains. But it’s smaller than I expected. Most dragons you fight are adults, but this one isn’t much larger than an elephant. I think it is anyway, hard to tell from the flyby.
Angie & Eddie So Angie stood up and made her way to Target. Passed the cart return, the shampoo bottles, the spa day bins with images of thin women relaxing. She went down the band-aid aisle, the cold medicine aisle, the muscle relaxants. She paused, facing a wall full of pads. She’d been in a slight daze, half convincing herself this wasn’t real, but not she had to focus because where the fuck were they? God, she wasn’t going to have to ask someone, was she?
Creative Nonfiction Portfolio In my dorm, the top left dryer doesn’t work. I’ve put wet laundry inside and returned to find wet laundry. After that, I avoided that dryer for weeks, until it was the only one available so I let it run through, figuring if it didn’t work there would be an open dryer by then. Lo and behold, my laundry remained wet. Have I reported it to the conveniently posted number hanging on the laundry room wall? Nope. Everyone seems aware it’s broken, someone must’ve reported it. And ultimately, we’ll live. But, that’s just a dryer. No one’s in any danger.
Immortal Souls The rain picked up. Back home, inside, I loved rain, but now I hated it. I pulled my hood up to cover my head and swung my backpack over my shoulder, moving off the bench and under an awning of a corner store. It was the kind of building that looked like it had been passed down between different owners, none of which bothered to change the old sign. An ancient hand-painted sign that said “Collier’s” was faded and mounted above a newer, stenciled sign that said “Watkin’s Market.” A glance around told me that Watkin’s was the name of the street, so, definitely not the most creative. It was advertising cheap cell phones and beer, so not much of a market either.
The Snow Queen Retelling "What’you suppose they are, demons or something? Goblins? Nothing like the ones at the church. That one looks like he can fly.” He stared at it, getting lost in the red of the glass, a color that stood out in the colorless castle. He hadn’t noticed it before. Or, he remembered, he’d thought it was stupid, that the colors gave him a headache. He’d never stopped to take them in, to look at how pretty the colors were when light shone through them.
Faye & Myra-- Summer Hangout I felt like crying, but that would be way worse right now and I couldn’t face it. I took a deep breath and pushed it away. I grabbed the few tintypes I’d taken out of the box, brought the box back, and purchased them. I went over to Olivia.
Layla In an instant, the numb feeling of being disconnected vanished, and panic rushed through me. Twitches underneath my eyes warned me that tears were coming, and then they did, filling my eyes and blurring the message. My mouth quivered, my breathing was speeding up. What was he doing? Couldn’t this be over? Hadn’t he gotten what he wanted?
Lialyn Lialyn was a kingdom of Mages. Every part of their lives had been shaped around the fact that everyone, from the rich to poor, learned magic. As the prince, he and his sister were expected to master as soon as possible. They were supposed to be superior in magic the way other countries had their royalty superior in swordfighting. Which meant that Sam had failed his family from the start.

Choosing the right band comes down to the type of event being planned. Here are some key things to keep in mind when selecting live entertainment for your special day:
Match the vibe: Consider the overall atmosphere you want for the event. Is it a relaxed garden party, a formal wedding, or a lively celebration? The right band will enhance the mood and keep guests engaged.
Check availability early: Popular bands get booked quickly, especially during peak event seasons. Make sure to secure your preferred band well in advance.
Request a setlist: It's important to review the band’s repertoire before booking. Ensuring they play songs that align with the event’s style and audience preferences is crucial for setting the right tone.
Professional Help for a Smooth Event

Live Band Hire Darwin, paired with The Candy Express, offers seamless support in this area.
Why Clean Spaces Matter for Events
The state of the venue directly impacts the overall feel of the event. Clean spaces allow guests to feel comfortable, and a well-prepared environment helps to enhance the overall experience. The Importance of Professional Services
Choosing a professional service for cleaning helps hosts focus on other event details without worrying about the condition of the space. A professional service can take care of everything from floor polishing to general tidying, making the venue feel as fresh as possible for guests.

19th's Steam Next Fest Impressions Oct 2024 Edition - Day 2
Day 1
Ad Memoriam
youtube
A mystery game about a rock band with a curse. One person dies at every major concert, normally via a freak accident. You play as a woman investigating her friend's death at their latest concert. It's got a strong hook with good atmosphere and music, only slightly brought down by a bit of uneven voice acting.
The problem is the mystery mechanics are frustratingly vague. You collect witness statements and place them on a cork-board timeline. The problem is that there's more statements than slots, too many plausible combinations, and no feedback when you get it wrong, so I spent a lot of time just frustratingly shuffling statements and trying too many combinations.
I'm hoping future cases are better, but this one left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
Meteorder
youtube
Someone's finally trying to revive the old Meteos series for DS, and I'm all here for it.
For people who never played, this is a type of falling block puzzle game where, instead of making blocks disappear, making matches causes them to rocket upwards. making further matches in the segment that's already flying will give it a boost. It creates a very sink or swim feeling where your board fills up fast and can be cleared fast.
The mouse controls don't have the tactile immediacy of the stylus, but I'll take it over nothing.
SOPA - Tale of the Stolen Potato
youtube
A weird frog steals your grandma's soup potatoes, and you have to adventure into the world hidden inside your pantry to get them back.
While it's full controller movement, game is functionally an inventory puzzle point-and-click. Go places, talk to NPCs, use items when needed.
This title will live and die on its characters and animation, and right now its a mixed bag. Cutscenes and bespoke animations feel expressive and lively, but the canned animations, such as characters jaw flapping to talk or repeatable in-game actions, feel either stiff or unremarkable.
The writing was consistently charming in a "sensible chuckle" sort of way, such as coming across a grandma frog who is pissed that no one sang her favorite song for her birthday. A song that no one can remember. Including her.
TetherGeist
youtube
A somewhat more puzzly celeste, down to having a per-level death counter and optional collectables that only count as obtained if you land on solid ground with them.
Here, the gimmick aiding the platforming is spirit projection, shooting your soul out and then teleporting to wherever you positioned it. limits are the range of your soul and the number of times you can teleport. It feels good and the way it interacts with stage gimmicks is really clever.
I also like how, unlike Celeste, it's willing to take a break from tense platforming to more exploration based gameplay, with a good portion of the demo being spent exploring the protagonist's hometown, talking to NPCs and finding collectables.
I am a bit iffy about the story. Our hero is part of a people who can all do spirit projection, but she's unique in that she's "tethered." No one else has the same distance limitation she has. Combined with occasional spasms of severe pain, this is presented as a magical disability.
Her goal is to undertake "the binding," a coming-of-age journey that her peers are undergoing, but she's been barred from due to her health complications. She decides to run away from home and journey on her own. The temple at the end of the journey is described by one character as "a place of healing" (even if she's assuming it's purely metaphorical.)
I'm just saying that if these plot points are treated thoughtlessly it could break bad real easily.
Secret Agent Wizard Boy And The International Crime Syndicate
youtube
Like most people with sense, I'm death to sick of Harry Potter. I don't want to see it expertly parodied, I just want to see it fade from relevance.
That being said, I was interested in this for two reasons. 1) It's by the developer of My Friendly Neighborhood, a game that was surprisingly well done for its premise. 2) This game has a specificity to it, not just parodying Harry Potter as a franchise, but specifically playing off of The Sorcerer's Stone's PS1 game.
Now, I spent the least amount of time with this demo, only about 20 minutes. I might try to give it a fairer shake later. But what I did play felt a bit disappointing.
The game seems to be mostly relying on wacky physics interactions to drive its comedy. Whenever you talk to NPCs, there's not much going on. And in a vacuum that's fine, but another decision hampers that.
Our wizard boy is made of paper, and a lot of your shenanigans can blow up in your own face. Which is funny. But the demo places you on a 7 day time limit, with the day moving forward every time you die. The game is actively discouraging you from going for comedic chaos. I seriously hope this is a demo-specific limitation.

ABOUT
PJ Starr and Dallas Lennox were inspired and creative souls, wild hearts and free-spirits. Amazing friends, great at parties, talented and wonderful musicians. In fact, Fox can't really say a bad word about them at all. Love was in abundance as he was growing up, and he certainly inherited their free-spirited and adventurous natures. Along with their musical talents. With a small apartment full of instruments, PJ used to say her little baby Fox knew how to catch rhythm before he could even speak. But when her baby Fox was older, PJ and Dallas were away for longer periods of time. It became normal for Fox, coming home from school to a quickly scribbled on note and instructions on how to use the oven. "Be back in a week Foxy!" used to be stuck on the fridge for two weeks, three, and then the postcard he received four weeks later from an entirely different location. "Change of plans, can't wait to bring you here!" overtook the placement, for two weeks. Three weeks. Four.
As a result, Fox could easily be explained as a drifter or a wanderer himself. When he graduated high school, he immediately threw instruments into a friend's van and hit the road with them. Only to find a new direction to go in at their destination with new people he just met moments earlier. Because, despite his wandering, Fox always forms strong connections with others. Most of the time, he doesn't wish to leave them at all but sometimes that's slightly easier than the one being left.
Here one second gone the next became a truth Fox never knew he'd have to deal with so literally. While somewhere in Ohio, Fox and his then band mates for the time being took to exploring. Of course nothing is more exciting than a derelict farm house in the middle of the night. All he remembers is touching something that looked creepy, and then it was lights out. And then lights on in an ambulance to the sound of buzzers and loud voices, and then suddenly...why could no one see him?
Finally in West Virginia, his luck changed. A shifter witnessed his bizarre grapple with tangibility, and Fox is still too scared to admit he randomly disappeared because he thought she was so pretty. But regardless, Yasmine knew exactly what was happening to him and dropped everything to take him to the Asphodel Institute. Fox has been here now for seven months, with a much better grasp on well...himself. However, he now finds himself unwillingly entangled within the conspiracies rising around him. Attending a party in March, Fox was a witness to Chris Hart's furious rant at potentially guilty supernaturals and the problem with Fox is...he can never really shut up.

237: Various Artists // Howl...A Farewell Compilation of Unreleased Songs
Howl...A Farewell Compilation of Unreleased Songs Various Artists 1994, Glitterhouse
Released in 1994 by German indie label Glitterhouse as a double 10”, Howl…A Farewell Compilation of Unreleased Songs collects 18 songs by a real odds and sods assortment of Americana, indie folk, and alt. country acts. I’m not super-familiar with Glitterhouse beyond the fact that they were Sub-Pop’s European distributor during that label’s 1987 to 1995 grunge apex. The patchy history recounted on the Glitterhouse website indicates they were making a turn towards singer-songwriter fare at the time the Sub-Pop relationship petered out, and I can imagine this comp serving as a sort of soft launch of the label’s new direction. I’m not sure how many of these artists were signed to the label directly, though presumably Glitterhouse distro’d a number of them. Iin any case, it makes for a great sampler of some of the better artists of the time who operated at the meeting place of roots and alternative music, many of them still active today, and mostly still lesser-known outside of connoisseur circles.

The best-known act on the comp today is easily the Mountain Goats, which I doubt anyone would’ve predicted in 1994—their contribution, “Against Agamemnon,” is typical of John Darnielle’s early direct-to-boombox sound, a bare sketch that refers obliquely to Greek mythology but could as easily describe waking up with a nosebleed on an existential camping trip. Steve Wynn (ex-Dream Syndicate) pops up in the midst of his wandering ‘90s period, and we’ve also got a desert jazz instrumental version of “Route 66” from the venerable Giant Sand, which anticipates the sound members John Covertino and Joey Burns would refine after departing to form Calexico. The next tier of notability down would be… I guess Vic Chesnutt, the devastating Georgian songwriter who offers a moving cover of Yoko Ono’s “Goodbye Sadness”; long-running heartland groovers the Silos (featuring Vulgar Boatmen founder Walter Salas-Humara) with the demo “Nothing But You”; alt. country forerunners Freakwater with their woozy “Lullaby”; and venerated songwriter Victoria Williams, who unfortunately contributes an irritating rendition of “Feed the Birds” from Mary Poppins.
Howl doesn’t transcend its times, but if you like this era of weird Americana, it makes for good company. You’ll likely pick up a band or five who’ve slipped your filter that you’ll want to check out (my pick being Chicago’s Souled American, whose woeful “Suitor’s Bridge” would see eventual re-release on their final record Notes Campfire).
