I was thinking about the whole thing about the HMDS cast all being descendants from the fomt/awl cast and then I realized there’s a very good chance that Skye is Huangs/Wons descendant and I just had to take a minute to process that.

For the character breakdown -- I'd love to know your thoughts on Won/Huang and Ann. :)

Alright! Let's start with Won/Huang! I'm going to include all incarnations of him. I rambled quite a bit, so I'm putting it under a cut!

Character Breakdown Ask Game - Still Accepting! ;)

How I feel about this character

My first impression of him (More Friends of Mineral Town) was not the greatest – I'm not fond of the stereotypical racist “greedy Chinese merchant” archetype. He's definitely grown on me a bit since first starting the games.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Won/Huang x Zack – They both have an interest in the buying and selling of goods. Perhaps in their pursuit of wealth, they find they have more in common than they thought? Plus they're already spending all day together. I feel that Zack's easygoing attitude would mesh well with Won/Huang's feistier demeanor.

Won/Huang x Farmer – Let's be honest, depending on how you play, the farmer could be just as interested in financial security as Won. I think the idea of them supporting one another would be really cute, and might even have Won/Huang rethink some of his more dubious selling tactics. Marrying him still doesn't get you a discount in his shop, though!

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I can totally see him hanging out with Kai on the beach, just chilling on their time off. He spends time in Back to Nature/HM for Girl at the Inn, and I can see him trying to drum up business there, much to Doug's chagrin. Unless he's paying for the space – which then I could see him and Doug being very formal business partners. I can't remember if Doug comments on him or not. The tenants of the inn might purchase the odd item from him and have a casual acquaintanceship with him, but he strikes me as a bit of a loner.

Sasha is another character I feel could have a businesslike relationship with him. Perhaps he is able to get her products for the shop. Because Sasha is more confident than her husband, she'd be quick to put her foot down if he offered her an unreasonable amount for something. I think they could have an understanding pretty quickly that they're both serious about keeping their businesses afloat. She wouldn't allow credit in lieu of payment, wouldn't listen to idle flattery, and I could see the two of them haggling over her counter, gradually becoming friendlier with time.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I feel like it's so easy to write Won/Huang off as a greedy jerk (I'm guilty of doing so in my own fic), but I don't think he's rotten to the core. When I'm playing Harvest Moon, I grind for that money, so I can't really call Won/Huang out on trying to do the same thing. The guy's selling things behind a crate of oranges – he's coming from humble beginnings and likely has had to deal with poverty in the past. I honestly think the special apples he sells are kinda ridiculous but I usually find myself buying them out of pity. When I refuse and he insults me, it kinda reminds me of the grouchy villagers in Gamecube Animal Crossing. The Story of Seasons series has gotten so smoothed down that most characters lack any real “bad” traits, so having characters blunt like this are kinda nice. (Lemme specify – there's a plethora of blonde, brooding, blunt, bachelors in the series that have a soft spot. I like that Won/Huang doesn't fall into that category – variety is nice.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Heart events! If we are going to have him as a marriage candidate, I at least want to bond with him a bit! Playing the apple game doesn't count! I want to know more about his past. Where does he get his goods from? He mentions that he travels. Where is he from? It would be a cool way to tie in different games – I can totally see him referencing the bazaar at Zephyr Town, perhaps selling his own wares there.

Why does he seem to think about money 24/7? Does he owe someone money, or is he seeking financial stability? Is the money being given to a sick family member? Does he genuinely get a rush from the grind?

This one's a gripe with Friends of Mineral Town and the remake in particular – I wish he was available even when Zack wasn't home. I have a hard time giving him gifts to befriend him because Zack's out the door at 11am, so I either have to run to their house immediately or I miss out on seeing him all day.

Let him participate in festivals and feel like more of part of the town. There's this strange disconnect from him and the rest of the villagers, despite the fact that he probably provides a lot of things that they need from other areas. I do appreciate the update to his look, as it looks far less costume-y, but some of his dialogue is still a little uncomfortable, and again, it's hard to shake that stereotype he's been written into. One minor gripe that I have about Huang's design, and probably is just an overall gripe about the art for the remake – I wish he wasn't so baby-faced. One thing that I did like about the old design was that he looked a bit older.

I Think Huang is a shallow character... they did him so dirty in this game that’s makes me sad :( because he is cute and i wanted him to be a better guy.

I love Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town. But also, tfw you can’t show your Anyone your favorite bachelor/bachelorette bc they’ll 9 outta 10 times say “They look like a child 🤨” , and then you have to launch into the spiel and explain that Yes, they do look like a lot like a child in this specific, odd, chibi art-style, but:

1. The only people who kinda don’t look like children are the people who are already moderately-to-severely unhappily married; or at least moderately-to-severely unhappily laid and absolutely not willing to mingle again; or the priest and police officer with questionable work ethics. And also absolutely not willing to mingle like that. Or with you.

2. Or they’re not even human. They’re some Duck God instead.

3. And there’s kid-ier looking children who are actually considered kids in the game, as opposed to everyone else.

4. And no matter what you do to your avatar, they also look like a child. Despite the age never being specified, they are the same age as the bachelorettes and bachelors. And that age is APPARENTLY of marital age.

5. and working age, and living alone age, and traveling alone age, and house-owning age, and land-owning age, and seemingly drinking age, and wreaking-economic-havoc-by-being-able-to-buy-and-sell-this-whole-entire-shocking-diety-ridden-rock-town age.

So we just gotta do a lot of taking the game’s word here and praying. And hoping that they’ll look a touch older in any future games if they even show up again-

Okay I can post this now that the contest is over :D Fave character? Won/Huang! I always gravitate towards the secret bachelors and I adored him in MFoMT ! His new design is so cute in the remake, I die. I’m happy to bring him all the gold ores until he accepts my blue feather again!
