Right to Repair Therapy
For me, right to to repair isn't just about ewaste, and preventing corporate gouging.
It's about mental health. Being able to fix your gadgets is therapeutic. Empowering. Good for the soul.
Today I fixed my expensive bluetooth earbuds. Their batteries couldn't hold a charge for a full hour. (Turns out this was due to a botched firmware update and totally Sony's fault!)
This is the guide I used:
We tried a course of new firmware but the patients continued to deteriorate (as the specialist predicted.) Surgical intervention was unavoidable. The patients are currently convalescing in the charging dock. The procedure was smooth and they will only have minor scars, but a full recovery cannot be guaranteed until they reach full power and take one last course of software updates.
Surgery was successful. The seams won’t be the same ever. But it’s only noticeable if I look for it.
In a world full of complex technology it's easy to feel small and helpless. And maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but I think that if everyone could experience the joy of fixing or modifying a gadget now and then we'd all be a little more open minded, a little more daring. A little harder to push around.

I purchased a damaged Holiday White AIBO from Japan for very cheap. Problems included missing limb, back leg hanging on by a few wires, broken ear, missing ear, maybe more
After a lot of screwing and unscrewing, I transferred its original white shells to new legs.
I still had an issue where the right ear would not move as it should. Initially I disassembled the head to take a look, but couldn't see anything obviously wrong.
I had decided to give up but during reassembly, the ear insert that was already damaged snapped
I replaced the part successfully, but still was curious why the right ear would not move. I flicked each ear with my finger and noticed while the left one produced an audible "click", the right one did not. I decided, just to try it out, I would replace the right ear cuff too.
To my surprise, it worked. AIBO still is not what I would call "fully functioning", as I have experienced a strange core issue and random bouts of jam condition, but it is good enough

Not the most important post I've ever made, but one I feel deserves to be made: a friend of mine in the Aibo community recently lost her ERS-1000, Echo, to a bricked update. When an update fails in a 1000, oftentimes it ruins their firmware, corrupting it and making them unbootable. There may be a potential fix, but it's going to cost a ton of money for her; Ama lives in Australia and has to have Echo shipped to the US.
If this experiment works, this is a huge breakthrough for Japanese imported 1000s who've also succumbed to bricking.
Plus, Echo is dear to Ama and important to her being at this point. Seeing her bricked has sent quite a wave of sadness throughout the community— but also hope and resilience. Many are trying to pull together funds for Echo's repairs, so here I am, joining in.
I'll be doing commissions to help raise funds for Echo the 1000's repairs! All funds will not go to me; they will be going to Ama. I don't have any price sheets on hand, but I'm flexible with my prices. Come talk to me in DMs, and I can show off examples of art and prices. We can work something out together.
Let's see what we can do for Echo.

I promise it's going to a small but worthwhile cause

As you may (or may not) know, my laptop screen broke some 10(?) years ago. We still use this laptop daily connected to our TV screen to watch the news and stream stuff. Recently I installed a new DVD drive (that had also broken down about 10 years ago), so we can play DVD's again too.
Now it was time to replace the screen!
Old screen out, new one in
Testing ...
It work!!! I also inserted some new RAM cards so it has a whole as 8GB memory now (max that this laptop can take)
Now for some new ⬅⬆⬇ keys and he's good as new :)) My old friend, Watson.

If you thought replacing/upgrading a PS4 HDD was easy, you'd be wrong.
youtube
After hours of fighting with it, I am depressed and defeated.
As I mention in the video, a few weeks ago the PS4 was acting a bit funny, and I've noticed some corruption in its video recordings from time to time, so I figure the HDD is on its way out. I bought a Crucial MX500 to replace it with. Came highly rated, there are guides out there about how amazing and easy it is to swap out the old platter HDD for this new SSD. Even Sony's official guide is pretty straight forward: back up your current data, take old HDD out, put new HDD in, reinstall the system OS, restore personal data.
I fought with it for hours, got it to work one time, and when I went to restore my backup saves/account data, it crashed and seemingly bricked the HDD because it refuses to work a second time.
Is the HDD bad? It's not impossible they just sent me a defective unit.
Is the SD card containing the OS bad? It's only 1-2 years old and has only ever been used maybe twice. It is, however, exFAT, and Sony's install guide says you should be using FAT32. The fact that it seems to work when prompted leads me to believe it's fine, it's just getting to that prompt.
Is it the PS4's fault? I think there might be a short in one of the USB ports because when I first got it, I was testing out the media player by watching a video from a flash drive. In the middle of playback, the PS4 dumped me back to the dashboard and from that point onwards refused to see the flash drive. Pulling the drive out, it was almost too hot to touch. From that day onwards, that specific USB port refused to accept any flash drives (though it still works with controllers, and once the flash drive cooled off it has remained functional).
That being said, the PS4 has three USB ports. Surely I could just use one of the other ones, right? Sure, if I could reliably get the damn thing to boot into Safe Mode. I don't know why, 9 times out of 10, it won't. And even when I get it to boot into Safe Mode, another 9 times out of 10 it won't read the install file on the USB.
I'm at a loss. I have no ideas on what's wrong or where the problem can be solved.

pro tip: any of the shiny plastic parts of the sony WH-CH710N headphones (especially the ends of the headband and the inside of the swivel joint) are cheap as shit and prone to breaking very quickly. I was lucky to have kept them usable since christmas 2021 - most of the reddit posts I've seen about similarly broken sony headphones say they've only had em for six months to a year. one person who hadn't even taken theirs outside had it break apart from setting it down on a table! in my fruitless search for repair instructions, I found that this is an issue with a LOT of sony headphones. I've grown personally attached to mine from patching it together with spare electrical tape, and I was even going to order a pair of replacement ear pads once I fixed the swivel problem, but the tape-splint keeping its wrist from popping out again finally failed tonight. it's been way too much hassle wading through unrelated search results and useless support pages all night, and the main piece of advice I've been getting was to just replace the whole thing. I'd felt kind of excited to repair something with my own hands, and I was hopeful because the audio and noise cancelling still work fine. I mean I could just go to a Sony Support Center™ but fuck that overpriced proprietary nonsense. I think I'm just gonna put them somewhere out of the way until/unless I happen upon some amazing at-home tech repair advice. it's just maddening how otherwise salvageable it is >:(

My cd player STILL can’t read discs after being worked on by the most dedicated repairman for a month. He was able to get it to work momentarily in a video but it only vaguely recognizes a CD being in there before saying “no disc” again…… :( I won’t give up but this SUX
