AMETHI: Union minister Smriti Irani on Saturday accused former Amethi MP and Congress president Rahul Gandhi of using foul language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and resorting to lies to spread confusion in the country. At this rate, the Congress will end up losing the Rae Bareli‘s Lok Sabha seat too, represented by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in 2024 elections, said Irani, who snatched Amethi Lok Sabha seat from Rahul Gandhi in 2019 general elections. “Rahul Gandhi uses foul language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is indulging in lies to create confusion in the country,” said Irani on the second day of her visit to her parliamentary constituency. Irani who reached Amethi Friday on a three-day visit made the remark while addressing people after laying foundation stones of various developmental projects and inaugurating different welfare schemes in her constituency. The Union minister alleged that the Gandhi family and Rahul Gandhi have knowingly thrown farmers and the poor in poverty to do their politics without any hurdles. And for this, Amethi has already bid goodbye to Rahul Gandhi and Rae Bareli too would do the same to the Gandhi family in 2024, she said, claiming that her party will win the Rae Bareli seat too in the next Lok Sabha elections. Irani said it was not easy for a woman belonging to a common family to fight against the Gandhi family. “I have faced a lot of humiliation but it is the love of the people here that I am standing here as your MP,” she said. “How can someone, who has never seen poverty, know the pain of the poor?” she asked, alleging that Rahul Gandhi has grabbed the land of farmers and snatched their rights. “How can those living in palaces of gold know the plight of farmers?” she asked. Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, who too was present with Irani, also charged the Congress with neglecting the development of Amethi. He also accused the West Bengal government of depriving the farmers of the benefits of the central scheme in the state.

यूपीए अध्यक्ष सोनिया गांधी 23 जनवरी को रायबरेली के दो दिवसीय दौरे पर जा रही हैं. सोनिया गांधी इन 2 दिनों में कई कार्यक्रमों में शिरकत करेंगी. 23 को 10 बजे विशेष विमान से फुरसतगंज एयरपोर्ट पहुंचने के बाद सोनिया गांधी 10.30 बजे भुएमऊ गेस्ट हाउस पहुंचेंगी.

गेस्ट हाउस में कुछ देर आराम करने के बाद यूपीए अध्यक्ष 10.45 बजे से 11 बजे तक अलग-अलग विकास कार्यों का शिलान्यास करेंगी. दिन के 2 बजे से 4.15 बजे तक उनका पार्टी पदाधिकारियों के साथ बैठक की योजना है.

24 तारीख को जनसंपर्क का सिलसिला फिर शुरू होगा. इस दिन सुबह 9 बजे से 10.30 बजे तक भुएमऊ गेस्ट हाउस में अमेठी और रायबरेली के कार्यकर्ताओं से मुलाकात करेंगी. आधे घंटे बाद 11 बजे से 1 बजे तक सोनिया गांधी बचत भवन सभागार निगरानी समिति की बैठक में हिस्सा लेंगी.

यूपीए अध्यक्ष का यह दौरा खास है क्योंकि पिछले महीने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने कांग्रेस के इस गढ़ में कई परियोजनाओं का शिलान्यास और लोकार्पण किया. इनमें रायबरेली में 1,051 करोड़ रुपए के कई अलग-अलग प्रोजेक्ट शामिल हैं. प्रधानमंत्री ने बीते महीने 16 तारीख को रायबरेली का दौरा किया था और यहां मॉर्डन रेल कोच फैक्टरी में बने 900वें कोच और हमसफर ट्रेन के रैक को हरी झंडी दिखाकर रवाना किया था. इस मौके पर प्रधानमंत्री ने कांग्रेस पर हमला बोला और विकास कार्य न करने का आरोप लगाया.

हालांकि कांग्रेस ने भी प्रधानमंत्री पर पलटवार किया और कहा कि वे रायबरेली और अमेठी क्षेत्र में विकास कार्यों  में रोड़ा अटका रहे हैं. यूपी के कांग्रेस नेता प्रमोद तिवारी ने प्रधानमंत्री पर यूपीए शासन के दौरान लागू या मंजूर किए गए प्रोजेक्ट का श्रेय लेकर देश को गुमराह करने का आरोप लगाया.

तिवारी ने कहा, “जिस तरीके से प्रधानमंत्री देश को गुमराह करते हैं, किसानों और नौजवानों को गुमराह करते हैं और तो और सुप्रीम कोर्ट को गुमराह करते हैं, उन्हें ‘मिस्टर गुमराह’ कहा जाना चाहिए. जिन सभी परियोजनाओं का श्रेय लिया जा रहा है, वे सभी यूपीए शासन के दौरान की परियोजनाएं हैं. हम उनसे पूछना चाहते हैं कि क्या वह कभी भाजपा सरकार की परियोजना का अनावरण करेंगे.”

Polls opened on Monday for the crucial fifth phase of India’s marathon elections including in two constituencies in the vote-rich state of Uttar Pradesh, where opposition Congress party president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi hope to retain their seats.

Voting began amid scorching summer temperatures and tight security in Uttar Pradesh in northern India, where more than 25 million people are registered to cast ballots for 14 members of India’s Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi is seeking re-election for a fourth consecutive time in Amethi. He’s the son of assassinated former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi’s widow, Sonia Gandhi, is running from neighboring Rae Bareli. Both constituencies are considered Congress party bastions.

India’s multi-phase elections, which started April 11 and last five weeks, are seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, which controls Uttar Pradesh.

The polling, spread over 51 constituencies spread over seven states, also is taking place in his mother Sonia Gandhi’s constituency of Rae Bareli. Modi’s Hindu nationalist party is trying hard to defeat the top Congress leadership both in Amethi and Rael Bareli to gain ascendancy for years to come.

Modi has adopted a nationalist pitch in trying to win votes from the country’s Hindu majority by projecting a tough stance against Pakistan, India’s Muslim-majority neighbor and archrival.

The opposition is challenging him over India’s 6.1% unemployment rate the highest in years and the distress of farmers aggravated by low crop prices. They have also made alleged corruption in a deal to purchase French fighter jets as one of the major election issues.

Monday’s polling will mark the completion of voting in more than 400 out of 543 parliamentary seats. The 39-day process will be completed on May 19. The counting will be held on May 23.

The election’s fifth phase is a war of titans.

Rahul Gandhi is pitted against the government’s textile minister, Smriti Irani, for Amethi.

Irani lost to Gandhi in 2014 polls but in the last five years has steered central government funds for development to the constituency and visited often.

“This time BJP is going to win the election,” Irani told The Associated Press.

“They promised the moon to these people but in reality Amethi is one of the most neglected constituencies because Gandhis never took interest in development of this region.”

Gandhi is also contesting the election from Wayanad, a district in the southern state of Kerala. In India, it’s possible to stand for more than one constituency, but one can represent only one seat in Parliament.

His sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is also the national general secretary of the party, carried out intensive campaigns in both Amethi and Rae Bareli, and predicted that her brother would carry Amethi by an even larger margin in this year’s polls.

“There is an emotional attachment between the people of Amethi and Congress,” she said.

In other races, the central government’s powerful Home Minister Rajnath Singh is in the fray from Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Another Modi government minister, Menaka Gandhi, who has strained relations with her sister-in-law Sonia Gandhi, is contesting from Sultanpur.

State chief electoral officer Venketshwar Lu told reporters on Monday that polling started smoothly and that shade, fans and drinking water had been made available at all polling booths.

“We are expecting good turnout this time,” he said.
