A Gallery of Ancient African Art

In this gallery, we look at striking examples of art from across the African continent. In gold, stone and metals, ancient and medieval African artists have not only given us unique pieces of art to admire but their works are also an insight into their respective cultures whether it be certain animals which were revered, the consideration of the human head as the container of the soul or simply what kind of jewellery was popular. By no means inclusive of all cultures, this gallery, nevertheless, includes art pieces from Egypt, Meroe, the Ptolemaic kingdom, West Africa, East Africa, and Mutapa and Mapungubwe in southern Africa.

Mossi Kingdoms The Mossi Kingdoms were a number of different powerful kingdoms in modern-day #BurkinaFaso which dominated the region of the #UpperVolta River for hundreds of years. Increasing power of the Mossi kingdoms resulted in larger conflicts with regional powers. The Kingdom of Yatenga became a key power attacking the #SonghaiEmpire between 1328 and 1477, taking over #Timbuktu and sacked the important trading post of Macina. When Askia Mohammad I became the leader of the #SonghaiEmpire with the desire to spread Islam, he waged a Holy war against the #Mossikingdoms in 1497. Although the Mossi forces were defeated in this effort, they resisted attempts to impose Islam. Although there were a number of jihad states in the region trying to forcibly spread Islam, namely the #MassinaEmpire and the #SokotoCaliphate, the Mossi kingdoms largely retained their traditional religious and ritual practices. The Camel Caravans of the Ancient Sahara

The camel caravans which crossed the great dunes of the Sahara desert began in antiquity but reached their golden period from the 9th century CE onwards. In their heyday caravans consisted of thousands of camels travelling from North Africa, across the desert to the savannah region in the south and back again, in a hazardous journey that could take several months. Stopping along the way at vital oases, the caravans were largely controlled by the Berbers who acted as middlemen in the exchange of such desired commodities as salt, gold, copper, hides, horses, slaves, and luxury goods. The trans-Saharan trade brought with it ideas in art, architecture, and religion, transforming many aspects of daily life in the towns and cities of a hitherto isolated part of Africa.
