mentioned this cop car animatic mv thing im working on but i never posted it here so heres what i have so far! (ignore the ..dattebayo in the intro i FORGOT TO REMOVE IT.)

it's a moira (light blue)/selene(purple)/fenhua(yellow) focus since i thought the song fit them and their dynamics with one another (⁠ ⁠╹⁠▽⁠╹⁠ ⁠) selene/moira and fenhua/moira are some of my fav relationships to write & develop

The dynamic I’m seeing is that various cultures in Vesper do have gender roles, but exactly what those roles are doesn’t match up with what we, in real life, would usually consider “traditional gender roles”. 

For example, Angharad seems to consider running a household- or at least bookkeeping and negotiations about land use- to be “men’s work”, while there’s no indication that her being a swordmistress is in any way unusual for her culture, or for Vesper in general.

Actually, combatant status overall seems to be something not linked to gender, in Vesper- we see women in battle just as often as men, and no one ever comments about it.  Even Recardo, the obnoxious guy who derisively responds to Aines saying that “family is the most important thing” by referring to that as “women’s talk”, doesn’t seem to bat an eye at fighting side by side with two women when the boat is attacked. 

We get exactly one mention of a particular combat style being traditionally used by only one gender- Song being trained in both swordfighting and spearfighting even though spears are considered the traditional female weapon and swords the traditional male one- but even then there’s no suggestion that either gender is expected to refrain from fighting. 

You also seem to get these roles varying from culture to culture within Vesper itself- see above with Recardo of Sacromonte apparently considering family to be something women are focused on, while the very Pereduri Angharad appears to view men as more domestic.

Overall, I think it’s working better for me than Dragon Age’s approach, which tended to go more like “Sexism Is Over, now ignore the way people keep upholding traditional gender roles in how they behave around women for no apparent in-universe reason”, since it’s using gender as a way of exploring what these cultures value and how they approach things differently.

Also notable that we do appear to have a canonically nonbinary character- Professor Fenhua is referred to exclusively with they/them pronouns by Osian, who is canonically close to them- and that isn't treated as particularly unusual by anyone else onscreen at the time, indicating that the traditional roles in question may include more than just two options.

(...although admittedly "everyone else onscreen at the time" includes a god-devouring shapeshifter and a giant hellcrab wearing a very well-maintained human suit, so possibly this group isn't really a good baseline for what the average person in Vesper thinks about unconventional gender expression.)

One kinda interesting about Pale Lights' worldbuilding, as opposed to Guide's, is that it like, has gender roles?

Not really patriarchy as far as we've seen - it's still very Dragon Age-style post-feminist fantasy - but even 4 chapters into the new book Angharad and Song's POVs have both included asides about strongly held different expectations for men's and women's work. Which as far as I can remember you really didn't see at all in Guide.

To be in Kombatra you must be headstrong and quick on your feet. As this dorm is a perilous journey. The dorm is dangerous. Full of traps and dangerous people itching for a fight. To enter this dorm , one must have the heart and soul of a fighter.

This dorm is currently Lead by Kierron Khanum , the younger prince of The Deadrealm. A cruel and tyrannical leader. 

The vice dorm leader is Song Fenhua , the advisor of the royal family in the Deadrealm. A schemer and a bodysnatcher willing to do whatever it takes. 

Very few people from the other nations make it in Kombatra , namely those from the Deadrealm , built for the harsh conditions. Of course. . . . There are the exceptions every now and again. . . .

Friend : A'rachk Evaniidae

Maybe an odd choice, but A'rachk being a species from a mysterious land i feel would draw Taron to him in pursuit of his knowledge. The two of them are left brain users as well, which is beneficial. Being logical prevents them from butting heads as often as they do with Inessa. A'rachk would find them fascinating in return, relying on him for information about the isle of sages.

Love interest: Song Fenhua

Song Fenhua is a mischievous but analytical person. Someone to keep Taron on their toes. He's typically busy with the prince, but in his free time he does enjoy refining his skills with a lost magic. Along with studying the isle of sages. He can take Taron's more blunt way of speaking with ease. Responding back with his combative and obscure way of speaking. They'd make interesting foils. Along with being yesmen ( non binary in taron's case but yk ) for a royal family member. I think Song Fenhua would be fascinated by him, seeking them out occasionally to pick at their brain.
