Canonical Batfamily Birthdays

Here are all the birthdates I know of that are canon somewhere in DC, with a preference for the main comics continuities. I have included exact sources and image references when possible. I am not including character introduction dates, just actual birthdays.

If you find any other sources for Batfamily birthdays, please do share!

A moment of silence for Batfamily characters who don’t have canonical birthdays yet, so far as I know. This includes Damian Wayne, Stephanie Brown, Duke Thomas, and more. :(

Note: in this post when I say “main comics continuity(s)/universe” I’m referring to anything that’s been a “home” continuity for the comics at some point. For example, pre-Crisis Earth-2, Earth-1/New Earth, and Earth-0/Prime Earth, as opposed to Elseworlds or DCEU earths that are still part of the broader DC multiverse but have never been the primary continuity of the comics.

Tim Drake

Tim has only been given one canon birthday. He turned 16 on July 19th in Robin Vol. 2 #116 (cover date Sep 2003).

Jason Todd

Jason turned 18 on August 16th in Detective Comics #790 (March 2004). This is his only canon birthday.

In post-Crisis/preboot (1986-2011) continuity, there was a gap of six months between when Jason died and when he was resurrected (Batman Annual 25). Jason died April 27th according to his death certificates in Batman Annual 25 and Batman Files 2011, so he would’ve resurrected near late October.

So, it could be that post-resurrection Jason is biologically 6 months younger than he chronologically should be. But honestly, do we even really know what multiverse-breaking resurrection punches and then a Lazarus Pit on top of that do to someone’s body??? Either way it’s just much more simple to just use his chronological age.

Cassandra Cain

Much like Tim and Jason, Cass has only ever been given one birthdate: January 26th from Batgirl Vol. 1 #33. With that birthday, she turned 18 in Batgirl Vol. 1 #37.

When Jan 26th actually comes, Bruce suggests David Cain could’ve lied about it, but Cass denies that idea and continues to treat the day as her birthday.

Why it's likely her real birthday: Bruce initially believes Cain must’ve lied because he doesn’t think Cain could’ve known her birthday. However, we later learn Cain had lied about her origins and was actually her biological father. Batgirl v1 #62 and #73 show he was there for her birth and could absolutely know the date.

On top of that, in Batgirl #37 Cass remembers celebrating her birthday with him as a child, so he did seem to actually keep track of it. I honestly don’t see any reason to believe he’d lie (Bruce is just a jealous spoilsport).

Helena Bertinelli + Wayne

I’m combining them here because the New 52 gives me a headache.

Helena Bertinelli celebrated her birthday on February 14th in a spin-off comic from the animated Batman: The Brave and the Bold series. This is obviously not part of regular comics continuity and the characters differ from the usual comics in many ways. And yet, for reasons that will soon be clear, it’s my favorite for actually being about Helena Bertinelli the Huntress and for not being an utter mess.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #14 (Apr 2010)

In a character profile at the end of Infinity Inc. #7 (Oct 1984), Helena Wayne’s birthday was September 7th, 1959. Calculating back from October 1984, that would make her 25 at the time.

During the New 52, Helena Bertinelli was initially portrayed as a long-dead (secretly alive but don’t worry about it) mobster’s daughter and replaced by Earth-2’s Helena Wayne who got stranded on Prime Earth. This H. Wayne stole H. Bertinelli’s identity in the form of several forged passports and IDs, which had hints toward birthdates. The question is, can we take any of those birthdates seriously, and if so, which birthdates and for which character? (Cue my headache.)

Skip ahead to Dick if overthinking fake passports sounds boring.

When comparing to a real Italian passport, the date on H. Wayne’s fake Italian passport appears to be a birthdate. Note that the fake name is Carol Bertinelli, not Helena. H. Wayne said her IDs were inspired by H. Bertinelli but clearly she’s taking liberties for the IDs so that’s a point toward these being useless for H. Bertinelli birthdays.

Huntress Vol. 3 #1 (Dec 2011)

I don’t recognize the month abbreviation as a real abbreviation, but from the visible letter O I’m going to assume it means October. If it is, then the date is 20 October 1985. Sidenote: a 1985 birthdate during 2011 could put her age at about 26, which is actually quite close to how old she could’ve been based on pre-Flashpoint! 1985 has been given as Helena Wayne’s death year before, so it’s an interesting choice of a birth year for her. (Thanks to DC’s sliding timescale, though, birth years don’t actually mean anything in the comics.)

They don’t show her complete US passport, but I can see a “22” in line where the day of the month should be for her birthdate. This already contradicts the previous passport. This one uses Helena Bertinelli’s actual name, though–does that make it more relevant than the Carol one or this all still ridiculous because of the discrepancies?

Worlds’ Finest Vol. 1 #1 (Jul 2012)

We can try to glean the US passport birth month from the passport number at the bottom. The first two digits (“12” here) indicate the agency that issued the passport. 12 means the Honolulu agency. Right after “USA” is supposed to be the birthdate plus an extra number, in the order of year/month/day with the year being the last two digits of a year. Here we encounter another problem. It says 810228. This would imply her birthdate is 1981/02/28. That’s February 28, 1981. Since the earlier line indicated her birthday fell on a 22nd, this already contradicts itself.

However, I’d bet comic writers and artists aren’t always well versed in passport numbers (it’s already a stretch for me to bother checking it…). If they put the extra digit before the birthdate instead after, and the date is formatted month/day/year (the most common format in American English, so probably their first instinct), then we can drop the first 8 and it’s 10/22/8[?] with the last digit unknown. This would put her birthday as October 22, sometime in the 1980s. The 22 matches the earlier line, the October might match the previous passport if that really did say October (but contradicts the 20th), and the 1980s year could be 1985 to match the Italian passport.

At the end of the day I’m personally just going to let Helena Bertinelli be a Valentine’s born baby and call it a day, unless/until she gets a better one in the comics. For Helena Wayne I’d easily pick September 7th.

(My question is: did they give the crossbow vigilante a Valentine’s birthday as a Cupid joke??)

Dick Grayson

Dick has probably had the most birthdays of everyone (unless Bruce has more I don’t know about). All of them have their drawbacks.

In a main comics continuity, his most popular and most recent is “the first day of spring” so probably March 20th. This comes from Robin Annual 4 when his mom says she calls him Robin because he was born on the first day of spring. That presents some problems since there are other explanations given for the origin of “Robin,” including that his mom said he was “always bobbin’ along” (Dark Victory #12, page 17) or the original inspiration of Robin Hood (Detective Comics #38, p3).

Before that, in Secret Origins Vol. 2 #50 (Aug 1990), Marv Wolfman wrote a version of Dick’s origins where Dick turned 10 a week before his parents died on Halloween. That would make his birthday October ~24th (presuming that “a week” before Halloween literally means 7 days here).

The first drawback of the October birthday is that it’s tied to Dick being 10 when his parents die on Halloween. Dick’s age and the date his parents die change a lot depending on the writer (Nightwing Vol. 1 #1 says his parents died June 27th, Dark Victory #8-9 says May, etc.). The second drawback is that few people remember this version of his birthday even exists.

Dick’s birthday is November 11th in Super DC Calendar 1976. Note: Despite being a non-diegetic calendar from almost 50 years ago, this source remains well known and used among comic enthusiasts (including those working at DC). Generally, I would say it should mainly apply just to pre-Crisis continuity, but it is also useful for characters that haven’t gotten updated birthdays ever since (like Roy Harper, Barbara Gordon, or Selina Kyle, for example).

Sidenote: Since Damian doesn’t have a canon birthday, November 11th is favorite to steal for my own fan canon Damian birthday. Dick has plenty birthdays to share and I think it’s cute. @ DC, give Damian and Steph birthdays, they’ve been birthday-less for decades!

Indeed, DC writer Tim Sheridan and editor Mike Cotton debated whether Dick’s birthday was in March or November. They favored March 20th and wrote a birthday scene in Teen Titans Academy #1 (published March 23rd, 2021). The publishing time near Dick’s birthday was intentional, though the date isn’t mentioned within the comic itself.

The above birthdays were all meant to apply to a main comics continuity at some point. However, Earth-16, better known as the animated Young Justice universe (therefore outside of main comics continuity), says YJ Dick’s birthday is December 1st.

Unlike Helena Bertinelli, Dick has plenty of comics birthdays to choose from, so personally I’ll only count Dec 1st as being the birthday for YJ animated/Earth-16 Dick Grayson until or unless it’s ever mentioned to apply to main comics continuity.

Barbara Gordon

Super DC Calendar 1976 says Barbara’s birthday is September 23rd.

Since then, the only time I recall her birthdate hinted at is in Secret Origins #20 when her adoptive mom says her birthday is in the fall. This could support her birthday being September 23rd.

Although she has celebrated her birthday on panel since then (the end of Nightwing Vol. 2 #153), she hasn’t been given any other actual birthdate. So I’ll keep September 23rd and call it a day.

Selina Kyle

Super DC Calendar 1976 says Selina’s birthday is March 14th. Once again, although it hasn’t been mentioned within a comic, it’s stuck around in popular consciousness (see: Catwoman actress Zoë Kravitz wishing Selina a happy birthday on March 14th).

Selina celebrated a birthday on panel in Catwoman (2002) #37 but the date was never mentioned. I don’t know of any other reference to her birthday, but my reading of Selina is thus far more sparse than my reading of the others.

Kate Kane

Kate’s birthday options all come from outside of the comics themselves.

In “An Un-Birthday Present,” season 1 episode 11 of Batwoman, a parallel version of her twin Beth had a driver’s license showing her date of birth as January 26, 1990. She and Kate later celebrated their birthdays on an episode aired Jan 26th, 2020. I don’t keep up with live action DC shows so I unfortunately can’t offer a screenshot (if anyone has one or the timestamp, please let me know!).

(I kinda wonder if somebody looked up Batwoman’s birthday for these episodes, saw Batgirl’s (Cass’s) birthday, and just ran with it. Batwoman and a Batgirl sharing a birthday is just. Ughhh.)

In 2012, one of her comic writers tweeted to choose a random date for her birthday and picked March 21st, which so far as I know has never been used as her birthday in comics.

Bruce Wayne

Bruce’s most popular birthday is February 19th, but his most recent one is October 7th from the digital-only comic Legends of the Dark Knight. I believe that’s the only time October 7th has been referenced, but I’ve heard the animated show The Batman said his birthday was in October (can’t confirm, haven’t watched it recently).

Still, even associates of DC seem to remember his February 19th birthday better. In February 2023, Warner Bro’s Gotham Knights game did a sale for Bruce’s birthday. I’ve also heard the birthday was used in the Gotham TV show, but again, I don’t watch much live action DC shows.

The February 19th birthday appears to come from the 70s and 80s. It’s his birthday in the Super DC Calendar 1976, and in Batman Family Vol. 1 #11: “Suprise, Suprise!” (May 1977). Bob Rozakis (known as DC’s “Answer Man”) said Feb 19th was Bruce’s birthday in the letter column of Detective Comics #494 (Sep 1980).

Super DC Calendar 1976

Way back in the 40s, his birthday was in April, possibly April 7th. During a birthstone murder mystery, Bruce says his birthstone is a diamond, which is traditionally the April birthstone.

World’s Finest Comics #33/6 (Mar-Apr 1948): “The 5 Jewels of Doom!”

Star Spangled Comics #91 (Apr 1949) might imply the exact date was April 7th but we’d have to assume the party is on his birthday and that “this month” refers to the publishing month of April. I believe this is where people get the April 7th birthday when they bring it up.

Early April also shines in Batman: Year One where it shows Bruce’s first night out as Batman being either the night of April 6th or the early morning of April 7th (Batman #405). So although the April Bruce birthday hasn’t been used in decades, it’s still a Batman birthday in a way.

I have also heard people say Frank Miller considered Bruce’s birthday to be in November. However, I have yet to find an original source of him saying that, and honestly (just like the “March 21st” birthday for Kate) if he never used it in any canon material I don’t put much weight in that.

Jim Gordon

The only birthday I’ve ever seen for Jim is January 5th from Super DC Calendar 1976.

Alfred’s birthday in Super DC Calendar 1976 is April 8th.

In the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe (an alternate reality where the video game of the same name is set in), they show Alfred’s birth certificate, where it says his birthday is August 16th, 1943.

Maybe you’ll notice that August 16th is Jason’s birthday. A little funny considering the issue features Alfred refusing to share his birthday only for us to learn it’s the same date as Jason’s. Still, annoying. There are so many days in the year! Stop choosing the same ones!

This Alfred birthdate runs into a similar problem Helena’s birthdates did: it’s not part of main comics canon, it’s an alternate universe, so it may not be applicable to the main comics universe.

Note: if we calculate that 1943 birth year from Jun 2016 when the comic was published, that’d make Alfred 72 soon to be 73. Does that mean anything in canon? Probably not, but oh well. Also...token British character born by Windsor Castle? …of course.

Personally, I would rather go with the April 8th birthday than the Injustice one, since Injustice is an alternate universe. Also, outside of the humor of it, the idea of Alfred and Jason sharing a birthday is a bit too much for me. Still, it’s up to people’s own cherry picking.

Chronology

The birthdays in publishing order alongside notable reboots. A soft-reboot refers to reboots that only changed a few details with minor consequences, keeping the overall continuity mostly intact. A major reboot has significant effects on continuity (too many to list).

partial PE honkai eruption timeline aka i can’t believe HUA became MANTIS at 17

roughly a year before PE 3E, KEVIN moves to Nagazora in the Far East (what we call Japan) where he meets MEI [Divine Key manga: Judgment of Shamash chapter]; that summer, six months before the eruption, she goes to an academic symposium on the MU continent where dr. MOBIUS spots her as an excellent candidate for a career in the MOTH evil scientist department [game chapter 17 act 2, ER Recollections: Good News, DK: Shamash]

the manga kinda makes it sound like KEVIN transferred 3 months before the eruption, but that doesn’t work with their bench conversation in chapter 17, unless MEI was scouted the year before they met; but as she already has a crush on someone when she meets MOBIUS, and allegedly wasn’t interested in that stuff before she met KEVIN, i think it’s simpler to assume she only went to the one the summer after KEVIN transferred to Nagazora

meanwhile, HUA begins her freshman year in Sapphire (a city in the east of Asia); she spends 6 months there, during which time she makes many friends, obtains many fashionable clothes, and celebrates her 15th birthday; the third eruption occurs on the day she is due to go back home [all game chapter 20]; HUA survives the initial eruption, is saved by HIMEKO, and eventually joins MOTH as some sort of regular soldier [game chapter 20, DK: Wings of Origin chapter]

MEI’s symposium in the summer 6 months before 3E + HUA’s birthday on february 9th place the eruption somewhere between february 10th and 28th, depending on how strictly we count HUA’s 6-month-long first semester at school (which likely started in september). personally, i think february 14th is the perfect date for a honkai eruption but either way it seems to at least add up to the same month as CE 3E [per the Azure Waters extras] which is neat because hi3 is a story about endless cycles etc.

3 years later, KEVIN kills the 6th herrscher [DK: Shamash]; within the next year, the 7th and 8th herrschers are also defeated [game chapter 20; also per the Second Key manga, Su joins MOTH about half a year after KEVIN killed HIMEKO, and the 8th herrscher manifests soon after]

a small discrepancy in the timelines: 2nd Key manga says it’s been 5 years since 3E while Shamash+ch20 add up to less than that; Recollections: It attempts to fix this (i think) by placing SU’s admission to MOTH at 5 years after SU and KEVIN last met instead (likely the time they saw EDEN in concert [Recollections: Chat History] which is some time before the eruption, possibly even before the bench scene) and yes this means that SU got his medical degree in just 4 years, probably because he’s very smart and motivated, but maybe also because they were already in dire need of medical personnel? i’d also assume this means that KEVIN, MEI, and SU were all in their final year of high school (i’m actually not sure if it was mentioned that they’re in the same year?) since at the very least SU, who lived away from the epicenter, would’ve graduated normally. if PE schools in the “Far East” were the same as schools in Japan now, perhaps disaster struck a mere month before MEI and KEVIN were to graduate :(

there’s no specific timeframe for 9E [mentioned in ELF manga chapter 2 and DK: Blankness chapter both of which are on the CN website but sadly only available as fan translation on mangadex], but the 10th ends 10 months after it [DK: Blankness] and HUA becomes a MANTIS 6 months after that [DK: Wings of Origin]

that’s at least 22 months between HIMEKO’s death and HUA’s procedure (but likely quite a bit longer if we assume between the 6th and 11th they were spaced about 6 months apart), which i don’t think anyone would round down to a year but even then it’s at least 5 years after 3E so to say HUA was 17 at the time would only work if she'd been a middle-school freshman, rather than high-school one

the birthday picture seems like a deliberate touch, and so does making her unnamed best friend Carole-shaped (Carole is 16 in APHO -- someone like the Olenyeva twins would work better as a middle-schooler classmate, or even Sora/Kuu-chan) so perhaps HUA was supposed to have been 12 at 3E when they wrote the manga, but they’d changed their mind about it by the time they got to chapter 20 in the game? now the one thing i really can’t explain to myself is why they made it a point that HUA changes from her school uniform (VA’s blue outfit) to the clothes “Carole” gave her (the Spring Traveler outfit) when she was going home, when the image of her cowering on the ground in VA’s outfit when HIMEKO saves her has been referenced in so many places!! what’s the point

“but if you can’t believe HUA was 17 how can you believe that she became MANTIS 6 months after 10E ended, these things are literally on the same page” idk beats me, one of these is just more compelling considering how scared mihoyo is of letting women be over the age of 18

i could believe Pardo was 16 or so when they MANTIS-ed her though, and Kosma was even younger probably. they of course didn’t need SWARA because when miho came up with it, Pardo and Kosma didn’t exist yet but! if you wanna have fun reconciling all the lores, we could perhaps assume that MEI gave HUA the SWARA treatment for some other reason than the one stated in Blade of the Empyrean :)

tl;dr of this is i think HUA was at least 20 when she became a MANTIS, probably 21; this doesn’t change anything about how effed up her story is, she still saw the horrors of honkai at a very young age, just, you know, mihoyo’s own timelines reveal the lies :^

Chronologically;

-2008-

On August 20th, Toomes’ crew is formed as they start salvaging items to sell from wreckages and then they turn to the illegal black market in 2012. No one interferes with their business until Peter Parker does in 2016.

On November 25th, Tony Stark (age: 38) admits to the world he’s Iron Man. 7-year-old Peter Parker watches the news while (as stated by director Jon Watts) ‘eating a big bowl of cereal'.

On May 7th, the opening day of the Stark Expo, 9-year-old Peter Parker waits in line to get an autograph from his hero; Tony Stark (age: 42). Tony gives him the autograph.

On May 31st, Justin Hammer’s Stark Expo presentation is hijacked by Ivan Vanko. 9-year-old Peter Parker (with an Iron Man mask and fake gauntlets) tries to ‘help’ by standing up to a big drone-robot. Tony saves his life and congratulates him for his bravery. 

-2015-

Before June 2015 Tony was investigating Peter not for his powers, but because his intellect got his attention (this is only my speculation, I could be wrong) ‘Stark Industries announces new scholarships for promising students from urban city schools’ (June 2015). Peter said he’s had his powers for 6 months in Civil War (2016), meaning he got them in November/December, 2015. So the reason Tony could’ve been giving those scholarships in the first place, as speculated by many, may be because he was impressed with the kid’s intellect first (and then obviously found out he had powers) rather than his powers. Remember Tony deemed Peter worthy of going to MIT. 

This also means Tony’s been waiting to meet Peter for about a year. 

-2016-

On May 3rd, Peter stops a car from crashing into a bus before going to school. Tony keeps track of all of his activities. The same video Tony had on his phone (which he took from YouTube lmao):

Tony officially meets Peter Parker on May 23rd. Peter was 14 and Tony was 46. Tony’s birthday is on May 29, 1970 and Peter’s on August 10th, 2001. 

On May 24th Peter arrives in Germany and the events of the airport battle unfold. Same day, while Tony goes to help Steve and Bucky in Siberia, Peter sneaks out from his hotel in Berlin to join a party in his Spider-Man suit.

On May 25th, after spending Friday and Saturday in Germany, Peter flies home with Tony. First in Tony’s jet where Peter asks for food and he’s given crackers, fish eggs and juice (lmao) and then they drive him home in his car in the early hours of the morning.

On May 26th, Peter is talking with May about the ‘field-trip’ and tries to cover up his identity by telling May he got into another fight (as referenced before in the novels, Peter gets into fights in school to protect Ned from bullies) and Tony helps Rhodey with his physical therapy (while Vision starts his escapes with Wanda):

On August 10th, Peter quits school band a few weeks before term starts (he sends Happy a text about this, telling him that he has more time for crime fighting and that he made a pretty big sacrifice there lmao). It is also his birthday. Tony listens and reads all of Peter’s messages thanks to Happy.

On September 1st, Peter returns to school after his summer holidays meaning the beginning of his sophomore year. He also texts Happy telling him he’s ready for his next mission and informing him that school ends at 2:45 PM. Tony sells the Avengers Tower and relocates fully to the New Avengers Facility in upstate New York.

On September 8th-9th, Tony flies to India to go to a Hindu temple. He did it to center myself, as a form of therapy. 

On September 9th, they see each other again when Peter goes to Liz’s party but gets distracted by Toomes’ crew. Peter fights them and falls into the Hudson River. Tony saves him. Tony tells Peter to let other people handle Toomes and to stay close to the ground. 

On September 13th, Peter decides to attend the decathlon team competition to go to Washington, D.C. As Peter is being monitored all the time by Tony, Happy calls him to ask why he’s leaving New York and then he lets him off. Peter removes the tracker lmao

On September 14th, Peter saves his friends from the Washington Monument incident. He appears on Fox news:

On September 19th-20th, Peter is given detention but he sneaks out lmao (rebel son). The next day Peter also skips school to find Toomes and his crew. Tony calls Peter to congratulate him for the Washington heroic act. 

Peter goes on his own to fight Toomes’ crew. The ferry splits in half. Tony arrives and saves Peter and everyone else. Tony gives Peter the disappointed dad talk and takes the suit. He also buys Peter a Hello Kitty pajama set and takes him home. 

Peter cries to May and tells her he wanted Tony to see his potential. He feels like he lost the Stark ‘Internship’ (his dad-son relationship with tony lmao).

On September 21st, Peter is all over again given detention and reluctantly resolves to not try to be Spider-Man for the time being.  

On September 23rd, it’s Homecoming and moving (Avengers stuff to the new facility) day. Peter defeates Toomes and recovers the Avengers and Stark weaponry/equipment. He leaves a note for Happy to find. 

On September 26th, Peter gets a text from Happy, telling him to meet him at his school’s bathroom. He tells him Tony wants to see him at the New Avengers Facility. When Parker arrives at the upstate facility, Stark greets him and praises him for his work. 

Tony offers Peter an apartment at the facility. He also organized along with Pepper a room of press so Tony can step out and announce him as the newest member of the Avengers. Peter turns down the offer impressing his dad mentor. Tony and Pepper announce their engagement while Happy drives Peter home.

On September 27th, returning from school, Peter discovers that Tony gave him the suit back with a note saying the suit belongs to him. May finds out Peter’s secret. 

After September, 2016 Peter is given a real internship at Stark Industries where he works and learns from Tony Stark himself.

- 2017-

Somewhere between this year, Peter updates the Stark-made web-shooters Tony made for him and learns how to manage Tony’s technology at the official Stark Internship. 

Tony Stark along with Peter Parker create the organization Worldwide Engineering Brigade (or WEB headquarters). An organization where bright innovators and the world’s brightest young minds like Peter Parker invent new technologies and equip everyday people to become superheroes. 

Tony Stark designs different types of Spider-man suits for Peter.

They also did missions together as hinted in the movies several times. In FFH, reporters and people around the world saw Spider-man as the ‘next Tony Stark’ and the ‘next Iron Man’, and asked him questions that hinted the same; 

Sean: Sean Wilford, Queens Tribune. What is it like to take over from Tony Stark? Those are some big shoes to fill.

Woman: Are you the head Avenger? Are you the head Avenger now?

Fury: Stark chose you.

Peter: Tony did a lot for me, so... I owe it to him, to everybody.

Also, the coordination and the different dynamic demonstrated in Infinity War tells us that much.

-2018-

On May 30th, Pepper Potts and Tony Stark are out running in New York City and discuss their upcoming wedding. Tony starts dreaming and wanting a kid on his own thanks to his relationship with his son Peter Parker while Peter is in a bus ready to go to his field-trip to MoMa. 

And then nothing happens :D everything’s ok.

2005 

TYPE-O FEBRUARY 7TH 2005 

monday’s are supposed to be ordinary things—that tired day of the week you’re never quite ready for; waking up roughly after a late sunday night, yelling at slow drivers on your way to work, your morning spent on the toilet using up company time. but by the evening of that fateful monday, the world had changed. 

 with the leaked release of type-o research work, a synthesized blood product made to satisfy the hunger of vampires, word spread across the internet. many asked, could this be real? while others scoffed at the notion. 

 but on fox news that evening, one vampire came forward, the supernatural world’s first whistle-bowler. through his existence, the world learned of all the monsters lingering in the night. 

THE WHISTLE-BLOWER'S DEMISE FEBRUARY 8TH 2005 

the cops find him lying face down in a storm ditch, his body marred with sunlight burns, making him almost unrecognizable. almost. his face in the past 24 hours had been plastered on every news outlet in the country. this was the supernatural whistle-blower, and someone had taken swift vengeance. 

THE MONTGOMERY PROTEST FEBRUARY 9TH 2005 

before the white columns of the alabama state capitol, the first ever protest against the supernaturals erupts, with violence springing up as the sky grows darker. 

THE FANG CLASHES STARTS FEBRUARY 10TH 2005 

in response to the show in alabama, the supernaturals flood the streets of nyc. they hold up signs, all mirroring the same pair of fangs, in remembrance of their whistle-blower. inspired by the images coming out of the big apple, pro-supernatural rallies soon spring up in other major cities. humans flood the streets in equal response, refusing to let these supernatural voices be heard. violence breaks out by the second night, as cars are set alight and windows smashed. everywhere signs of fangs and messages of damnation can be seen. 

later, these long protests and counter-protests are named the fang clashes, for the banner the supernaturals align under. 

THE BUNKER MEETING FEBRUARY 12TH 2005 

with violent protests occurring throughout most of the u.s., the government sends out the national guard. 

deep in a bunker in the white house, the president meets with representatives of type-o and a small number of cabinet officials. nobody knows the content of the meeting—if any bargains or threats are made—but a few weeks after, the government comes out with official details of all known species. 

AASF ESTABLISHED MARCH 2005 

on the back of wide-scale protests in the state, humans band together and establish the alabamians against supernaturals force (AASF). their aim—to protect their state from supernaturals and keep humans safe. the groups numbers swell overnight, and vigilante justice sweeps the state. many supernaturals and non-supernaturals end up getting hurt in the terror that follows. 

the groups success leads to other states forming vigilante groups of their own. 

WALKER MURDERS SEPTEMBER 12TH 2005 

on the morning of september 12th, the AASF leaders, edward and julia walker are found dead in their beds. no immediate cause of death is revealed, and so blame is immediately thrust upon the supernaturals. four days later, the autopsy comes back, revealing they were murdered by a witches’ curse. having stayed relatively under the radar, the witch community now comes under fire from anti groups. 

TITLE 18 UPDATE SEPTEMBER 25TH 2005 

in response to the walker murders, the government addresses the criminal activities of creatures. title 18 of the united states code is updated, and new chapters are added, outlawing such things as dangerous curses, necromancy, fey pacts, drinking from humans without consent, and turning humans into therians. 

PFHL ESTABLISHED OCTOBER 2005 

fresh off the clampdown of magical activity, the humans establish a political force, the party for human lives. lobbying the republican party, they ask for increased rights for humans to defend themselves against supernaturals, as well as supporting the oppression of supernaturals. 

DCA ESTABLISHED DECEMBER 2005 

after months of protests, a branch of the democratic party come out in support of supernatural creatures. they are ousted from their political party, but quickly form the democratic-creature alliance. they begin to work on ways to gain protections for supernaturals. hours after the formation of the group, the democratic party denounces them. 

2006 

THE BEING LIST JANUARY 1ST 2006 

on the first day of the new year, the government announces a system, named the being list. all supernaturals are required to sign up, providing details of their powers and identification through photographs, fingerprints, and blood. any failure to sign up to the program results in jail-time. processing stations are set up across the country, as well as police taskforces to track down any supernaturals disobeying the program. with this new system, the fang clashes end. 

however, many supernaturals feel unfairly prosecuted, and peaceful sit-in protests occur in larger cities. these protests are quickly disbanded by the police, and the supernaturals are taken to be processed against their will. 

THE SANCTUARY JANUARY 4TH 2006 

in new orleans, a city with a more tolerant attitude towards supernaturals due to its history with them and rich diversity of supernatural inhabitants, some of the city’s therian population establish a safe house. feeling affronted by the list, they aim to ferry people from elsewhere in the country and bring them to the safety of nola. they want to make a home for themselves, somewhere they might stay safe from the prosecution seemingly everywhere. 

THE ANNIVERSARY MASSACRES FEBRUARY 8TH - 14TH 2006 

leading up to the first anniversary, flyers for protests and counter-protests are handed out, and the events bring huge crowds to the cities. small scale clashes erupt between the two groups, but overall, the night goes on without any major blows. 

on the morning of the 9th, the bodies of many supernaturals are found across the country. at first, many think the various vigilante groups had started the wave of murderous violence, but the groups soon protest their innocence. later, it becomes clear all the bodies have one thing in common—all are branded with twin pistols. the mark of hunters. 

the killings continue in waves up until the 14th, where on valentine’s day the largest number of supernaturals are wiped out in a single day. never before had the hunter's managed to target them on this scale, and the supernaturals wonder how they managed to find everyone. quickly, their attention turns to the being list. 

days later, the government finally admits that their database had been hacked.

facing persecution from the government, as well as the threat of being hunted down, the fight for supernatural rights soon leaves the streets. instead, communities gather in houses, discussing ways to ensure their safety and survival, as well as to debate on suitable methods of self-defense. with the resistance underground, alliances start to deepen between the various species, while others only widen. 

NEW ORLEANS RUSH MARCH 2ND 2006 

with a supportive and sympathetic human populous, and one of the largest communities of supernaturals already established in the country, the mayor of new orleans proclaims the city as a pro-supernatural haven. he urges supernaturals to make their way to the city, to the arms of more tolerant friends. in response, there's a large influx of supernaturals to new orleans, and soon hunters follow in their wake. 

FELLOWSHIP OF ALL BEINGS OCTOBER 31ST 2006 

but, the more tolerant humans of NOLA don't take kindly to the anti-supernatural groups that attempt to rise in the wake of the supernatural rush. in response, the fellowship of all beings comes together; a group with the aim to promote free love of all beings and establish themselves as supportive allies of supernatural beings. 

the first pro-supernatural march happens in new orleans on halloween, with many humans and supernaturals in attendance. 

2007 

THE CENTRAL CITY CLASHES JUNE 4TH - MAY 9TH 2007 

in NOLA, the vampires and therians start to dispute territories. this leads to a series of midnight clashes between the two species, with much blood being spilled on the streets. after many evenings of violence breaking out, the police department warn that if disruption continues, they will bring in hunters. 

while the threat prevents further outright violence, a slow burning war between the two species takes hold. 

HUNTER PROTECTION MANDATE JULY 10TH 2007 

taking inspiration from the new orleans police department, the government enacts a mandate; every police department in the country will be assigned a hunter, while largest police departments will have entire hunter task forces at their disposal. 

THE BLOOD MOON PROTEST AUGUST 28TH 2007 

under the total lunar eclipse, across the nation the therians launch a series of publicity stunts against the mandate. in the minutes while the world turns dark, they paint their luminary symbol on walls and roads, lay down signs on capitol lawns listing their demands, and bomb newly established hunter offices within police departments. in response, the government labels the blood moon party as terrorists. 

2008 

OPERATION CHANGELING STARTED JANUARY 12TH - APRIL 27TH 2008

with supernatural rights group largely underground and unknown, the fbi launches an operation to infiltrate pro-supernatural groups and take down the leaders of the movements. many agents of the task-force are sent into new orleans, a known hub of pro-supernatural activity, as new members of the fellowship of all beings. 

over the next three months, 12 of the 15 agents vanish, before finally the agency pulls the mission. 

BLOOD TYPES OCTOBER 31ST 2008 

during the annual halloween fab parade, some vampires are seen exchanging vials of blood. most assume they are trading the vials of synthetic type-o blood, but rumors of vampires on blood highs start to circle, the underworld steps in to squash these rumors, but the exposure leads to other dark beings becoming involved in the underworld's dark market. 

2009 

THE MOREAU KIDNAPPING APRIL 26TH 2009 

making waves in the back halls of government, the DCA develops the first pro-supernatural bill. the bill’s architect, lawyer and merrow activist, melusina moreau, establishes herself as a force for change. but, her work is cut short when she mysteriously disappears from her d.c. home on april 26th 2009. 

two weeks later, parcels of her remains are sent to other DCA leading members, demanding them to stop the work they are doing on the bill. without their architect and the heart of their cause, as well as being afraid for their own lives, the DCA halt work on the bill. 

2011 

THE NIGHT OF WITCHES NOVEMBER 5TH 2011 

on the night of november 5th, the hunter police forces raid 37 witch covens across the states. in a press release, they state the raids are to prevent illegal witch activity. after, some covens are forced to disband, while some witches are prosecuted for illegal magic use, without fair trial. 

THE SALEM PROTESTS NOVEMBER 7TH 2011 

with the brutality the police had treated the witches with, many are reminded of the barbaric practices of the salem trials. angry their brothers and sisters have been punished unfairly, the witches return to the salem village parsonage. there they protest, spending the night chanting and burning effigies of hunters over the stake. 

2012 

OPERATION GARGOYLE STARTS FEBRUARY 8TH 2012 

six years on from the type-o reveal, the cia commences operation gargoyle; a research project looking into the biological differences between humans and supernaturals. the greenfield lab is established, and starts research on the vials of blood collected from the being list. 

2014 

MHC MARCH 2014

wanting to continue to work on the supernatural protection bill, a group of supernaturals split off from the DCA and form their own group—the mythic humanoids committee (MHC). made up of lawyers and politicians, the committee start to work on old drafts of moreau's bill and start to lobby key government figures. they make alliances with both the DCA and the democratic party. 

2017 

SUPERNATURAL BEING PROTECTION ACT 2017 OCTOBER 21ST 2017

after years of turmoil, the supernatural being protection act is finally passed. the act represents the first time supernaturals are given the right to citizenship as well as protection under civil liberties. but many argued this is only the start of a lengthy process; with their privacy still disregarded by the being list and the lack of credible trials, supernaturals will still be treated harmfully by the government. 

THE DC RIOTS OCTOBER 22ND 2017 

following the passing of the act, anti-supernatural groups converge on capitol hill to protest against the increased rights. over the next few days, more people pour in from all over the country, leading to one of the biggest mass protests in the country’s history. 

2019  

JACKSON SQUARE TREATIES AUGUST 5TH - AUGUST 8TH 2019 

following years of tensions between the supernatural species, the mayor of nola invites representatives of the various groups to meet in jackson square. after a few nights of peace-making revelry, the groups agree to a shaky truce, preventing more blood from being shed on the city’s streets. but many criticize this, doubting how long such a truce can last.

2020 

FAB ATTACKS FEBRUARY 8TH 2020 

peace seemed to be on the horizon, but that streak of hope fades when the fellowship’s main office is attacked. in the middle of the day, with the building heaving with social workers and supernaturals, gunfire erupts throughout the building. 41 individuals lose their lives in the attack on the office, with many more injured. 

in the wake, nobody comes forth to claim responsibility for the attack, but a letter is delivered to the mayor’s office. one that requests the city to cease its supernatural loving agenda, or face the streets being turned red with blood.

firstly, chris. i agree that he has more from libra, but they made him a scorpio, born on november 6 2004. it happened bc feb 2-nov 8 is 40 weeks that's needed, and in 6x22 we hear that it's 2 days before his birthday. we didn't see nov 7, but the guess is that he was born between 11 p.m and 12 a.m., and that actually means, that he celebrated his birthday in the end of 6x09, but he didn't know about it. melinda. we actually know nothing about her birthday, but 'early 2007'. in your fic she's pisces, but the guess is she's been born earlier. here's the deal: it was stated that she was conceived two weeks after the battle in 8x22 ended (it was march 20 actually). 40 weeks from april 3 is january 7, which makes her a capricorn. idk, i think it would be lovely to see melinda having sign as her mother, as long as they looked very similar. pj. the problem is that the writers of the comics made some mistakes and season nine starts in 2008, not 2007 (bc it was stated in issue 6, and 10x04 confirms it. so, we know that pj was born in may (it's bc she was 4 weeks old, and june 19 or 20 was the first day phoebe started her job again), so it's may 23, 2008, gemini vs sagittarius. henry jr was born august 16, bc 9x08-12 is actually one date - this one. so he's still a leo. parker. in 9x18 cole said to phoebe that's she 1 month pregnant, in 9x19 she's already three months pregnant, so she gives birth to parker on june 23 in 9x20 (i find it funny that grams was born on june 23 too), so it's taurus vs cancer. (7) peyton. phoebe says that's she's pregnant in 10x13, it was late november, and she comes back from the hospital with peyton on june 30, 2011, and that means that she was born on june 29?              I know that I’ve written this somewhere among these pages before, but the universe is a funny, funny creature! In fact, I’m almost certain that it takes particular joy in plaguing me with the punchline of its many jokes. You see, today I learned the proper identity of my mysterious letter writing Slayer. Surprised as we both were, we agreed to be civil and sat down for a cuppa. Dare I say that I didn’t mind the taste as much as I thought I would?              The entirety of the world has gone mad, myself included! That missing girl, Mathilde Grishawk, has finally been found. Although, I suppose it more apt to say that her dead and naked body, levitating through the merry revelers of the Halloween masque, found all of us instead. I’ve never seen such eyes. Of course, all pandemonium let loose and we Prefects were left to clear the mess of students! Some of them crying. Many of them angry and quick to point a blaming finger at one another. If Dumbledore is as great a wizard as everyone claims, he certainly doesn’t show it in moments of peril. He just looms over everything and leaves it for the children to handle. Thank Circe for McGonagall! I often feel as if she’s the only capable adult in this castle.

             My sisters were both missing through the entire ordeal. I cannot begin to understand what I’m supposed to make of that! They are both of them making themselves scarce these days and for very different reasons, I suspect. Oh, I know that they can both handle themselves, but...acknowledgment would be nice! I don’t think it’s too much to ask for. I shouldn’t worry, I know I shouldn’t worry, but I do! It plagues me to the point where I cannot think of anything else and the only person that seems to understand is - 

             Well, suffice to say that I was very lucky to have found him beneath the mask of my dance partner tonight.              It’s frustrating watching whatever it is that’s blossoming between Andy and Lupin. There’s no one that I can talk to it about either.              I haven’t slept since I woke up in the hospital ward. I haven’t eaten anything either. I don’t feel anything that I know I should and it worries me. It’s like there’s a scream in the back of my throat that wants to claw its way out but I won’t allow it. I can’t allow it.              I love James Potter. I am in love with James Potter. It is as simple and yet so very complicated as that! Of course, the true revelation in all of this is that he loves me too! These past few days have been some of the happiest I’ve had in such a long time, I’m not ready to leave them behind. Oh, but there’s so much to do! SHERLOCK HOLMES: January 6th, 1981 ( stated in The Casebook ); making him younger than the actor playing him. However, this does conflict slightly as Sherlock states he was nine years old when Carl Powers drowned, and the article claims it was in 1989, which places his birth in 1980 instead. This was before they gave Sherlock a canonical birthdate in any media, however, and for the purposes of this, we’ll be using the casebook age, and claiming Sherlock was either rounding or misremembering due to the fact his childhood memories are not entirely factual. Additionally, the headstone image shown in The Sherlock Chronicles says 1977, but the previous date is the one considered to be Canon. ( See Notes )

JOHN WATSON: unknown, but somewhere in the 70′s. A popular fandate is March 30th. Judging off of the actor’s age, possibly around 1971, but maybe younger as many actors are playing younger than themselves.

MYCROFT HOLMES: Exact date unknown, but he is seven years older than Sherlock, which puts him to be born around 1973-1974. Which makes him canonically younger than the actor playing him.  02/25/19 EDIT: According to sources, Mycroft is given a birthdate in the Escape Room based on the series, October 20th, 1968. While the October date works fine, year for this doesn't fit the "Seven Years Older" claim on the show. The oldest birth date given for Sherlock is 1977 and that would make Mycroft nine years older than Sherlock, not seven. The year given falls closer to Mark Gatiss' actual age, and leaves me inclined to think that perhaps year for the game isn't entirely factual. That being said, there's still no reason he couldn't have been born October 20th. Based on the "Seven Years Older" claim, stated in show, the best guess is October 20th, 1974.

EURUS HOLMES: Exact date unknown, but she is a year younger than Sherlock, which makes her born somewhere in 1982-1983 depending on when she was conceived. 

MARY WATSON: Unknown, but based on the actress’ age, likely 1974;  but maybe younger as many actors are playing younger than themselves. 

ROSAMUND “ROSIE” WATSON: January 2015. We can infer this because based on how far along Mary was at her wedding, Rosie would have been conceived Mid-April, and if she was relatively ontime, she’d be born late January. 

DATES OF NOTE:

REDBEARD / THE MUSGRAVE FIRE: Between 1988-1989 roughly; there is no clear indication on the show as to when these events took place. We can only summarize based on what we know about other events. We know that Sherlock "began" solving crimes at age nine ( see below ) due to Carl Powers; and we know that Sherlock had to be younger than ten years old during the events told in The Final Problem. Assuming that the tragic events of Carl Powers triggered something in him, making him take extra notice due to his own past experiences with Eurus and Victor; but still allowing time for all the events to take place and enough time to have passed for Sherlock to have rewritten the story so completely in his head where he can be suspicious but not fully triggered; I'd place him as seven or eight during these events.

This is also made plausible due to the funding Sherlock seems to have for himself, his impatience and the fact that it is a three hour flight each way.

Based on his track record, it’s likely January 15th is meant to be the date that Sherlock is told Irene is in Witness protection ( John seems to publish immediately, regardless of how tasteful it might be to reveal details of recent cases ). This gap would cover everything from Irene arriving at Baker Street, Sherlock going to the airfield, him beating Irene at the game, and saving her in Karachi. It’s likely, considering how erratic Sherlock is by early March with no cases, that the day John tells Sherlock the lie, is around late January / early February. Allowing Sherlock enough time to have done all of this as well as get riled up in time for Baskerville, which had to have occured before March 16th

CASE: THE HOUNDS OF BASKERVILLE: Early March 2011; by best estimates given as John doesn’t take too long to post his accounts of the events, and he had already finished typing up the case prior.

BASKERVILLE CASE POSTED: March 16th, 2011. This is also the same date Moriarty hacks John’s blog with a video of him inside of their flat. Suggesting he’s already free from his interrogation shown at the end of The Hounds of Baskerville.

The dates surrounding Sherlock’s death and The Reichenbach Fall are highly questionable as the episode, the blog, and logistics for certain events all contradict each other. Joe Lidster, who wrote John’s real world blog, has comically said that Moriarty hacking the blog gave it a virus that messed with the dating system, as a tongue in cheek explanation. Meaning if we were to take that as fact, all the dates in the blog could be false. The newspapers shown in the episode, have dates that suggest different things. I’ve chosen the one which makes the most sense, based on the news reel clip on John’s blog, the statement that he went to therapy three months later, the school holiday schedule for the abduction of the Ambassador’s children and several other people’s attempts to sort this all out. ROSIE WATSON IS CONCEIVED: Mid April 2014

JOHN AND MARY’S WEDDING: May 13th, 2014; ( see above note about The Sign of Three )

His Last Vow has the opposite problem as the series finale prior, in which next to no dates are given. We only know the dates at the end of the episode. Just that the events of John getting restless, Sherlock using again, Magnussen visiting, Sherlock being shot, Sherlock leaving early to confront Mary, Sherlock leaving to confront Magnussen, John confronting Mary, Sherlock being taken to Hospital again and being released all happen between May 13th and December 25th, 2014. It can take a couple months for gunshot victims to be released from Hospital, depending on the severity. Applying Mycroft Rules and Television Rules we know that Sherlock likely didn’t stay the time a regular patient would have. Knowing Sherlock he would have wanted out as soon as possible. We know John and Mary were at odds for a bit, reconciling on Christmas. Plus there needed to be time for Sherlock to fake date Janine, John to reach the level of restlessness there was and get Charles’ attention. So these next few dates are estimates. The majority of the scenes shown in episode are out of order and happen in two time periods, before Mary’s revealed and Christmas Day.

SHERLOCK GETTING SHOT:  September / October 2014

SHERLOCK SNEAKING OUT OF HOSPITAL TO MEET MAGNUSSEN AND MARY:  Early/Mid October 2014; presuming based on deleted scenes depicting a Sherlock who was unable to move for a while in recovery that this was maybe days or weeks later when it was deemed safe to wake him up from medically induced coma.

SHERLOCK RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL: Mid-December 2014, inferred by how the family and friends act as if it was more recent while at the Holmes’ family home.

SHERLOCK BOARDS THE PLANE / MORIARTY’S VIDEO GOES LIVE: December 31st, 2014 / January 2nd, 2015; the show itself provides two different accounts of this. Mycroft states in His Last Vow, that Sherlock was in holding for a week, placing the scene at the tarmac in Early January 2015; however, the introduction to The Abominable Bride places the scene with onscreen text in 2014 still. The only way both can be remotely accurate is if Mycroft is rounding up, and it’s December 31st, 2014.

DURATION OF SERIES THREE: Fall 2013 - Winter 2014;  just over one calendar year.

CASE: THE ABOMINABLE BRIDE ( REAL WORLD ): December 31st, 2014 / January 2nd, 2015 ( see above )

The first scene of The Six Thatchers, along with the real world scenes of The Abominable Bride and the final scenes of His Last Vow are the same day.

ROSIE WATSON’S BAPTISM: March / April 2015; based on many modern traditions, the baby’s age and the style of clothing worn by the attendees.

The Six Thatchers covers the majority of one calendar year, no exact dates are given but we can surmise things based on the shown development of Rosie Watson ( whom we know to be a year old by the end of The Final Problem ). Rosie is shown to have full head support and movement before Mary dies, which is something that happens around six months. This would mean Mary’s still alive around June 2015. Allowing for time in which Mary is on the lam, leading to the aquarium, the following are my best guesses for events.

MARY IS BACK IN LONDON: September 2015

NORBURY SHOOTS MARY: October 2015

SHERLOCK RECEIVES MARY’S VIDEO / JOHN’S LETTER: Late October. 2015 / Possibly Early November 2015 

CASE: THE LYING DETECTIVE: Possibly Mid-December 2015 / Early January 2016

Another case of ‘we don’t know how long’; we know Sherlock returns from hospital on his birthday, but the dates in between are unclear. Nor do we know how long John and Sherlock didn’t speak for. Sherlock would have needed a major detox, as well as treatment for his injuries. Based on the timeframe, it’s unlikely he attended any form of inpatient rehab outside of whatever the hospital had on location due to his injuries. Possibly due to either Mycroft pulling strings, or the more likely, Sherlock refusing and signing himself out when able.

We also know that the jump from The Lying Detective and The Final Problem can’t be too long. Even though Sherlock has had a magical recovery from all ailments between episodes, it’s extremely unlikely that John sat on the ‘I was almost killed by your secret sister’ tidbit for a few weeks. Meaning these episodes likely happen very shortly after one another. It also feels unlikely that Eurus would make herself known to John and then wait weeks/months to then begin acting out again once the secret was revealed.

JOHN AND SHERLOCK’S REUNITING: January 6th, 2016

JOHN’S FINAL THERAPY SESSION WITH EURUS: Somewhere between January 6th - January 13th 2016; assuming he went about once a week.

CASE: THE FINAL PROBLEM: January 13th, 2015 - January 20th, 2016; presuming John was able to tell Sherlock after ( not knowing how long he was knocked out for ); and allowing Sherlock and John some time to figure out their next move. This would also cover the attack on Baker Street and the entire event on Sherrinford Island.

ROSIE WATSON’S FIRST BIRTHDAY: Mid/Late January, 2016

OTHER NOTES:

The Entire Series spans six years.

The Sherlock Timeline runs one year behind real world time, with the show’s episodes in universe during 2016, aired in January 2017

Sherlock Holmes would be 29 in A Study In Pink, and 35 by The Final Problem based on the Casebook date. 30 and 36 by The Carl Powers age. and 33 and 39 by The Sherlock Chronicles age. All would make him younger than Benedict Cumberbatch, born 1976.

An incorrect headstone, as seen in The Sherlock Chronicles would make sense with the fact that until The Lying Detective, John states he never knew his birthdate. Which, had his tombstone had it, would make little sense. Providing an in universe reason for this odd lack of knowledge on John’s part. Perhaps John merely guessed? Maybe Mycroft knew he wouldn’t want it known, so they put a fake date? Especially as Mycroft knew he was alive. Otherwise, this is just another plot inconsistency  --- which, I’m getting quite tired of. 

We don’t know when Mary and John first met, but we can infer they’ve known each other about a year from dialogue in The Six Thatchers when John is attempting to propose.

Alternate timelines surrounding The Reichenbach Fall sometimes claim the following dates: Sherlock Testifies: May 9th, 2011; Moriarty is freed and visits 221B: September 20th, 2011; The Kidnapping: November 19th, 2011; Sherlock Falls: November 20th, 2011. This comes from a couple on screen newspaper clippings; but they are contradictory to the stated three month interval stated. It’s up to fans to decide which version they feel is more accurate.

More of a musing, but it’s kind of interesting how many times John immediately runs to the internet to share the details of really recent cases fresh in the public’s mind; in contrast to Watson’s monologue in The Abominable Bride about how careful he is to avoid doing that very thing. Which is even funnier if you view it through the long standing canon lens of John is an Unreliable Narrator

18 Book-ish Questions for 2018!

Ahoy there my fellow readers and book eaters! Welcome to 2018! 

I hope you all are having a marvelous year so far, and you are all buckling down trying to make progress on your reading goals! If not, don’t fret, there’s still a long year waiting for us! 

I’m posting this later than I intended because I’ve been so wrapped up in some winter cleaning! But here it is: a glimpse into my 2018! 

How many books did you read in 2017? What did you set your 2018 reading goal as?

I set my goal for 20 books this year, and I read 29. 

As for 2018, I set my current goal to 35 books, but it wouldn’t be surprising if I end up changing in. For my Spring semester alone I’m required to read 15 books, along with texts from the Shakespeare textbook (I just don’t know if they’re full plays). There’s at least 30 books I want to read on my own free time...so I’m interested to see where this year takes me. 

Thoughts about your year in reading?

I think overall I had a really good year! A majority of the books I read this year were either 4 or 5 stars for me, and I found two authors who’s books I honestly love with every inch of me! My biggest regret tho was my reading slump between September and November, where I had a hard time finishing anything because I just wanted to read a specific book that I couldn’t have quite yet. Also, it was a really big year for buying books....really big year. 

How many books are you planning to read this year?

Somewhere between 35-40 books. With school and my job I just don’t have the time or patience to read every book I want. Compared to 2017′s reading goal of 20 books, 35-40 seems ambitious, but I need to read about 16 of those for my English minor.

What are your goals in 2018 as a reader?

1. Read more diversely. 

2. Read different genres. 

3. Read through at least half the books I own before buying more.

4. Read the books lent to me that I’ve been holding onto for forever.

5. Finish the books I’ve abandoned.

6. Read more classics.

An author you’d like to read (that you’ve never read before):

Leigh Bardugo. I’ve heard nothing but praise for her work, and as a lover of all things fantasy I think I’d really be into her books! I always walk past her books while I’m browsing in Barnes and Noble, and 9/10 times I’m drawn to at least pick it up. I also couldn’t count the amount of times someone has recommended Six of Crows to me. Hopefully next year I decide to follow through and buy one of her books! 

A book you’d like to read:

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. SJM gets a lot of praise in the book community, and a lot of people recommend A Court of Thorns and Roses and the remainder of that trilogy (or is it a quartet? I can’t remember). While I can’t say ACOTAR is of interest to me at this point in my life, I was always drawn to the Throne of Glass series...but I never bought the first book because I didn’t like the cover (yes...I’m one of those people). However, the UK edition made me want to purchase at least the first installment in the series because I am a total sucker for that white aesthetic. 

A book you’d like to re-read:

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. And Then There Were None has always been one of my favorite required readings, and it’s been seven or eight years since I’ve read it cover to cover. This past summer I picked it up several times to try and re-read it, but I always ended up putting it down in favor for another book. Hopefully this year, I’ll finally make it through. 

A book you’ve had for ages and want to read:

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. I bought this book on Amazon in May of 2014. That poor book has been sitting on my shelf for over three and a half years, waiting for someone to pick it up and read it’s story. Again, this book is talked about a lot by some of my favorite Goodreads reviewers, and they hold this book in high regard. This will probably be one of my summer reads, but I’m going to try and make it happen!

A book you started in 2017 and need to finish

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. There’s at least a hundred other books I should read but this one...I kinda need to return. I love swashbuckling adventures, and my coworker lent me this book to read but school and life happened, and I was never able to get through the first few dozen pages. But...I kinda need to finish it before summer.

A big book you’d like to read:

Iluminae by Amie and Jay Kristoff. It’s not that big of a book, but it’s 599, which is probably one of the bigger books I intend on reading in 2018. Though Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss are up there too (it’s just a matter of if and when I get to them). 

An author you’ve previously read and want to read more of:

Agatha Christie. I’ve started collecting up her paperback books, because I honestly love a good detective story mixed in with all the fantasy I read! Whenever I go to the bookstore I tend to spot a lot of cozy mysteries, and I’m not necessarily into all of that side of mystery, thought they are fun to read. However, Christie was such a great writer, and a lot of her books are true classics. 

A book you got for Christmas and would like to read:

Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla: Biography of a Genius by Marc Seifer. Before Christmas, I had an argument with my grandma about Einstein and Tesla, and how much better Tesla was. I guess that prompted her to buy me a biography on him (actually...two biographies). Regardless, I really want to try to read more nonfiction this year and to learn something new. 

A series you want to read from start to finish:

Avry of Kazan trilogy by Maria V. Snyder. Once I close the cover on Ixia and Sitia, I want to pick up Snyder’s other fantasy trilogy! I love how Maria explains her worlds and her magic system, so I can’t wait to start something new! (Book 1, 2, 3)

A series you want to finish that you’ve already started:

The Chronicles of Ixia series by Maria V. Snyder. The Study books are some of my favorite books of all time, and I’m three books from finishing the 9 book series! (Book 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

Most anticipated 2018 release?

The Darkest Legacy by Alexandra Bracken. Set for release on August 7th! I’m so excited that Zu is getting her own standalone novel! The Darkest Minds trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies of all time, and I love everything Alexandra Bracken writes. 

Most anticipated book turned movie/TV show?

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken. Set to be in theaters September 14th! I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited to see a trailer for the movie, and when I finally see it I might honestly cry. 

Any New Year’s Resolutions?

I’m really trying to get my shit together this year. I spent the two weeks completely gutting my room, getting rid of all the old stuff that no longer makes me happy or no longer need. I must’ve had almost 20 bags of trash because I honestly just got rid of absolutely everything. I sorted out books and clothes for donations as well! It feels good to just relieve myself of all that clutter, and I intend on doing so for the rest of the year! 

I also want to work on some writing this year. I just finished a Creative Writing course and it was honestly so much fun being able to just let my thoughts flow, so I’m going to try and do some more this year. Especially with my camp season coming up!

Stargazer Calendar 2019: Meteor Showers, Planet Elongations and more

If you’re an avid stargazer like us, then this is the place for you to be. Because we’re here to give you a calendar of all meteor showers, celestial movements and phenomena that you need to look out for in the second half of 2019. There’s so much happening and we’re very stoked. Let’s get right into it.

Meteor Showers

JULY

July 28th, 29th: Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower

This meteor shower is a very average one with a capacity to produce up to 20 meteors every hour. These meteor showers are known to happen every year between July 12 and August 23. The peak night this year is July 28th and the morning of July 29. The sky should be dark enough and we might get a good look at the shower. Prime viewing location should be a dark place after midnight.

AUGUST

August 12th, 13th: Perseids Meteor Shower

This one probably one of the biggest showers observed. When it’s at the peak, it is known to produce up to 60 meteors per hours. The comet Siwft- Tuttle produced this shower. It runs from July 17th to August 24th. The peak this time will be the night of August 12th and morning of August 13th. Prime location to view it will be a dark place after midnight.

OCTOBER

October 8th: Draconids Meteor Shower.

This one is a minor shower that can produce only 10 meteors per hour. This shower is produced by the dust grains left behind b the 21P Giacobini- Zinner comet. The unusual thing about this shower is that the best time to view it is early evening instead of early morning.

The entire shower runs from October 6th to October 10th. The peak this year is on the night of 8th October. Prime viewing location would be somewhere away from the city lights and possibly a dark place.

October 21st, 22nd: Orionids Meteor Shower

This too is an average shower that produces about 20 meteors per hour when at peak. A special fact about this shower is that is it created by the dust left behind by the famous Halley comet.

It runs between October 2nd and November 7th. The peak is on the night of October 21 and the morning of October 22. Best viewing location would be a dark place after midnight.

NOVEMBER

November 5, 6: Taurids Meteor Shower.

This one is a long-running but minor shower that created only about 5-10 meteors per hour. It is created in two streams, one by Asteroid 2004 TG10 and the other by Comet 2P Encke.

The shower runs between September 7 to December 10 and peak this year is on the night of November 5th. Best viewing location would again be a dark place after midnight, preferably away from city lights.

November 17, 18: Leonids Meteor Shower

This again is an average shower with around 15 meteors per hour but at peak. It is produced by the Tempel-Tuttle comet. The shower runs between November 6 and November 30. This year, the peak is on the night of 17th November and early morning of 18th. Best viewing location would be any dark place after midnight.

DECEMBER

December 13, 14: Geminids Meteor Shower.

This one is the king of meteor showers as it produces up to 120 multicoloured meteors per hour when at peak. It is produced by an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. This shower runs between December 7-17th. Peak this year is on the night of 13th and morning of 14th. Best viewing location would again be a dark place after midnight.

December 21, 22: Ursids Meteor Shower.

This is a minor meteor shower that produced only 5-10 meteors per hour and at peak. The comet Tuttle produced this. The shower runs between December 17 and December 25.  The peak this year is on the night of 21st and 22nd morning. The sky should be dark for a good view of it. Best viewing location would be a dark place, away from city lights, after midnight.

Planetary Events

AUGUST

August 9: Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation.

Mercury will reach the greatest western elongation of 19.0 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury.  It will be seen at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky.

SEPTEMBER

September 9: Neptune at Opposition.

Neptune will be at its closest approach to Earth and it will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brightest at this time of the year and will be visible all night. This is the best time to view and photograph Neptune. Due to its extreme distance from Earth, it will only appear as a tiny blue dot in all telescopes.

October

October 20: Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation.

Mercury will reach the greatest eastern elongation of 24.6 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury. It will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky.

October 27: Uranus at Opposition.

Uranus will be at its closest approach to Earth and it will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be the brightest this time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view Uranus. Due to its distance, it will only appear as a tiny blue-green dot in all telescopes.

November

November 28: Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation

Mercury will reach the greatest western elongation of 20.1 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury. It will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky.

Why Christmas Celebrated on the 25th December?12123

Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God.

The name 'Christmas' comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. The 'Christ-Mass' service was the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people had it at Midnight! So we get the name Christ-Mass, shortened to Christmas.

Christmas is now celebrated by people around the world, whether they are Christians or not. It's a time when family and friends come together and remember the good things they have. People, and especially children, also like Christmas as it's a time when you give and receive presents!

The Date of Christmas December 25th

No one knows the real birthday of Jesus! No date is given in the Bible, so why do we celebrate it on the 25th December? The early Christians certainly had many arguments as to when it should be celebrated! Also, the birth of Jesus probably didn't happen in the year 1 but slightly earlier, somewhere between 2 BCE/BC and 7 BCE/BC, possibly in 4 BCE/BC (there isn't a 0 - the years go from 1 BC/BCE to 1!).

The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (he was the first Christian Roman Emperor). A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on the 25th December.

However, there are many different traditions and theories as to why Christmas is celebrated on December 25th.

A very early Christian tradition said that the day when Mary was told that she would have a very special baby, Jesus (called the Annunciation) was on March 25th - and it's still celebrated today on the 25th March. Nine months after the 25th March is the 25th December! March 25th was also the day some early Christians thought the world had been made, and also the day that Jesus died on when he was an adult. The date of March 25th was chosen because people had calculated that was the day on which Jesus died as an adult (the 14th of Nisan in the Jewish calendar) and they thought that Jesus was born and had died on the same day of the year.

Some people also think that December 25th might have also been chosen because the Winter Solstice and the ancient pagan Roman midwinter festivals called 'Saturnalia' and 'Dies Natalis Solis Invicti' took place in December around this date - so it was a time when people already celebrated things.

The Winter Solstice is the day where there is the shortest time between the sun rising and the sun setting. It happens on December 21st or 22nd. To pagans this meant that the winter was over and spring was coming and they had a festival to celebrate it and worshipped the sun for winning over the darkness of winter. In Scandinavia, and some other parts of northern Europe, the Winter Solstice is known as Yule and is where we get Yule Logs from. In Eastern Europe the mid-winter festival is called Koleda.

The Roman Festival of Saturnalia took place between December 17th and 23rd and honoured the Roman god Saturn. Dies Natalis Solis Invicti means 'birthday of the unconquered sun' and was held on December 25th (when the Romans thought the Winter Solstice took place) and was the 'birthday' of the Pagan Sun god Mithra. In the pagan religion of Mithraism, the holy day was Sunday and is where get that word from!

When the switch was made 10 days were lost, so that the day that followed the 4th October 1582 was 15th October 1582. In the UK the change of calendars was made in 1752. The day after 2nd September 1752 was 14th September 1752.

Many Orthodox and Coptic Churches still use the Julian Calendar and so celebrate Christmas on the 7th January (which is when December 25th would have been on the Julian calendar). And the Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates it on the 6th January! In some part of the UK, January 6th is still called 'Old Christmas' as this would have been the day that Christmas would have celebrated on, if the calendar hadn't been changed. Some people didn't want to use the new calendar as they thought it 'cheated' them out of 11 days!

In the autumn (in September or October) there's the Jewish festival of 'Sukkot' or 'The Feast of Tabernacles'. It's the festival that's mentioned the most times in the Bible! It is when Jewish people remember that they depended on God for all they had after they had escaped from Egypt and spent 40 years in the desert. It also celebrates the end of the harvest. Many people who have studied the Bible, think that Sukkot would be a likely time for the birth of Jesus as it might fit with the description of there being 'no room in the inn'. The year that Jesus was born isn't known. The calendar system we have now was created in the 6th Century by a monk called Dionysius Exiguus. He was actually trying to create a better system for working out when Easter should be celebrated, based on a new calendar with the birth of Jesus being in the year 1. However, he made a mistake in his maths and so got the possible year of Jesus's birth wrong!

Most scholars now think that Jesus was born between 2 BCE/BC and 7 BCE/BC, possibly in 4 BCE/BC. Before Dionysius's new calendars, years were normally dated from the reigns of Roman Emperors. The new calendar became more widely used from the 8th Century when the 'Venerable Bede of Northumbria' used it in his 'new' history book! There is no year '0'. Bede started dating things before the year 1 and used 1 BCE/BC as the first year before 1. At that time in Europe, the number 0 didn't exist in maths - it only arrived in Europe in the 11th to 13th centuries!

So whenever you celebrate Christmas, remember that you're celebrating a real event that happened about 2000 years ago, that God sent his Son into the world as a Christmas present for everyone!

I could keep giving context but the only person reading these anyway is me.  I’m gonna break continuity for just this moment and just vent about something.

So-- I thought being in college would automatically reverse the isolation from high school and I would be surrounded by people again, right?  Right.  I really thought it would be that easy, but as evidenced by the fact that I’m writing about it in my designated emo journal, that’s obviously not the case. 

I had trouble adjusting freshman year of college.  It’s a blessing and curse not to have a roommate because on one hand, I don’t have to bother with a roommate, but on another hand, I don’t really have someone (in my immediate space) to be social with.  I have J and M, but having a roommate is almost like having an automatic friend, isn’t it?  I spend an awful amount of time in my room.  Besides, J and M have boyfriends now.  The dilemma there is self-explanatory. 

I see everyone around me having all these fulfilling friend groups and friendships and I lust after what they have (or what I think they have).  I want to be a part of a greater whole so badly it hurts.  I don’t know how I’ve done it, but I’m miles ahead of where I was last year and I feel lonelier than ever.  

I’m pretty sure that’s because a few of the people I tried to initiate stuff with and be friends with last year... well.  It’s finally fallen through, and I think I have to come to terms with the fact that not everybody is going to want to be my friend-- that I shouldn’t try so hard to make people like me if they’re just not receptive to it.  I have to know when to quit, is where this is going.

I can’t just sit down and accept that, though.  If someone doesn’t want to be your friend or doesn’t want to spend time with you, 99% of the time there’s a concrete reason why.  Ever since I started to come around to the fact that some people just don’t see me/want me as a part of their proverbial “group”, I keep asking myself what I’ve done wrong.  

No where is this more apparent than what happened with B.  With B it makes even less sense because for half of this semester (right up until November 14th, if we’re going by the last time he messaged me) everything was fine.  Maybe even going somewhere.  I liked him-- I’d say I liked him a lot, but I think a solid half of that was hormones.  I digress.  I liked him, but I didn’t want a relationship, so I was trying to navigate this gray area of trying to grow closer to him as a friend instead of ‘something else.’ 

I felt like I was constantly initiating stuff with him, with little success.  We were movie nerds; last year I would always go to the anthology with him to see whatever was there.  That was our thing-- at least, I’d like to think it was.  Ask me when the last time we went to the anthology was (not counting that Aussie horror movie we saw at that other cinema).  I almost can’t remember, but if I go back far enough I can say it was probably that Czech boxer movie... back in what, October? September?

The problem here is that we only ever went out to movies.  We never really studied together, or ran errands, or whatever, and that’s what I was trying to push for.  And no, the times I went to HIM on his floor when he was hanging out with HIS FRIENDS absolutely does not count.  I couldn’t even get him to come up to say happy birthday to me last year despite our living in the same building.

Regardless, I felt like us exclusively going to the movies together was accidentally setting a precedent that going to the movies was all we could ever do-- and I didn’t want that to be the case!  I wanted to spend time with him outside of that, like I do with J and M.  

Hell, we watched a movie in his room way earlier in the semester.  Obviously I was more than okay with this because I got to hang out with B.  However, the last time I tried to make plans with him, he gave me the most infuriatingly ambivalent answer (verbatim, it was “maybe”).  It’s the kind of answer you give when you’re trying to let someone down easy.  It’s the kind of polite deflection you do when you don’t want to explicitly say you don’t want to be around someone.

Typing this out makes me sound like I’m reading too much into it-- I can assure you I’m not.  I don’t understand how someone can be so eager to see you one second (pfft, when was he ever?) and then so indifferent the next.  It stings so badly.  The change is so abrupt I keep wondering if I did something to cause it.  My hypothesis is that I complain too much and it makes people uncomfortable.  The only problem now is that whenever I express a negative sentiment to someone, I’m hyper-aware of it.  It’s like I second-guess everything I say.

Social media’s been a bitch too-- particularly Snapchat.  There’s one acquaintance (definitely an acquaintance) who’s story I watch almost compulsively.  Whenever I see her hanging out with friends, particularly B, it hurts because it reminds me that there’s them, and then there’s me, and I’m not part of them, and as it currently stands, I never will be.

It’s like there are just some things that are sharp reminders of the fact that you are other.  I know and hate how melodramatic that sounds, but sometimes it feels like J, M, and my family are the only people I have in the entire world.  That’s not to do a disservice to my music department friends, they’re dear to me too (but they have there own share of problems... to be explained another time), but I feel so frustrated that my program, the one place where I want to feel like I belong, makes me feel like I’m damned to orbit on the outskirts of the universe for the rest of my days.

I can’t remember the last time I felt whole.  It feels like every day I’m going through the motions and just floating above everything, like I’m not really here.  I’m mentally checked out, but I know I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.  It feels like everyday is another day gone that I could have done something, or have been with someone, but I wasn’t.  It feels like I’m a chronic spectator in my own life.  I can’t emphasize enough how this feeling haunts me. 

The last time I felt grounded, felt here, was actually such an innocuous event it’s almost funny that something so small could effect me so profoundly.  When my seminar class took a brief field trip downtown not even two weeks ago, I spent a few minutes just hovering in the cloud of bodies that was my classmates.  I made a deliberate decision not to seek out the attention or conversation of B, because I was trying to train myself to be apathetic-- or beat myself into indifference.  Either or.

Basically, I fell into step with another acquaintance, B+.  B+ is really companionable, and I talked this poor guy’s ear off for the entirety of the “field trip.”  But he was there, present with me.  I didn’t feel like I had to vie for his attention, or like I was fading into the background.  It was like I was a puppy that had lived in some box its entire life and I just met a human.  I was inexplicably happy.  

When M joined our little group as we commuted back to Hunter, things got even better.  Conversation bounced between the three of us (plus one other acquaintance) when the rest of the group went off to a diner for breakfast.  Let me tell you something: I was in a good mood for the rest of the day.  There’s no other way to describe this feeling, but it felt like I was satiated.  I felt a little more like myself again, for the first time in awhile. 

In fact, I felt so soothed, I fucking wrote “it’ll be okay <3″ (or something along those lines) in my agenda.  Who does that?  I never do that.  But it really did feel like, in that moment, everything would be okay.  

I wonder if I’ll spend the rest of my life chasing this feeling.
