Neptune in the Houses and The Dissolved Ego

“Neptune embodies the urge to transcend the boundaries that keep the soul separate from the whole. Neptune seeks dissolution of the ego, the small self, but this can dissolve into not knowing who or what the self really is.” - Judy Hall.

Neptune in the 1st: There is a sometimes unrealistic environment around the development of self. Many warn of being impressionable, that there are no boundaries for the self. In best case scenario one could argue the ego sees past itself with this placement. This person has a more immediate understanding of the human condition and especially feelings of others. From this can be a healer, poet, helper, maybe empath BUT from this can also be a struggle to find self. In a more negative scene this can be someone with less boundaries, they find it easy to become intimate and vulnerable. Intimacy can be a weapon they wield or blocks for relationships to build or both.

Neptune in the 2nd: Let me guess have you heard that this placement is bad with money? They always are left wanting, even if well off? They are impractical? While I won’t say these associations are completely untrue I understand if you are tired of them. With Neptune in the 2nd things like art/creativity build up their worth. If we look at more specific associations - photography, music, dancing, and poetry. Religion or spirituality could help them feel more bounded to the real world. In the 1st intuition is seen in the self but I would make a claim this placement has a lot of seen or outward intuition too. Here this exist in a tangible way. Their intuition interacting with reality. We know substances are associated with Neptune, there comes a warning that substances can boost their self-esteem but in a house connected to the senses there can be more of a spiritual experience with some substances, of course I know this is a controversial take. Finding great value and meaning for the self in something as innocent as food and drink could be part of this interpretation with substances + senses + value. In terms of “ego”, this allows one to find value in elements other than the material. Ego does not have to rely on objects of wealth. There is depth in a house that tends to get a very surface level reputation.

Neptune in the 3rd: Known to be elusive in communication and connection. A natural knack for creativity which really comes from an idea that they do best with creative ways to learn. The ego here doesn’t get hung up in words and intellectual dogma. There is a way to share feelings and thoughts that reaches others. Expression and learning are important to them especially in an artistic sense such as poetry and song writing. Easily distracted and can lack discipline but they are highly adaptable and this may be seen most in their childhood as well as times when they are open to learning. They help others understand them, the nature of emotions, and fellow humans through communication.

Neptune in the 4th: Things like pride or selfishness are likely to not get in the way of what matters most - family or the feeling of finding belonging. Attachment to the changeable and an unstable home life is associated with this placement. But intuition and feeling is nurtured from their past somehow. This is a highly sensitive individual who was not programmed into being misled by the ego. The flip side of this is that their sense of self might not have been solidified growing up. Selfish wants and needs were not always catered to and this can have both positive and negative outcomes. On the positive this is someone who can be giving and easily sympathizes with others, may even have a sense of humility. But a lack of boundaries and self-focused needs being met can still have consequences that allow them to be easily used and hurt. Learning that change is the only constant at an early age can be an area of strength for them.

Neptune in the 5th: Could get carried away in romances and easily lose sense of self within them BUT while I don't want to downplay those risks, if there was a house with plenty of positives for Neptune it is this one. A creative, intuitive, and emotionally in-tune planet sitting in the house of pleasure, play, and creativity. Neptune can be about romance and in the 5th... here the ego dissolves into foam of fantasy feelings and expectations. Disappointment and crashes down to earth can await but at least here the soul, the individual gets to feel something truly special in their romances. "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." There is a greater understanding about themselves and about others when they dive into the arts/creative expression. Pleasure, the joys of life are felt on another level, maybe even a spiritual one.

Neptune in the 6th: Creativity, imagination, and intuition in the mundane is a gift for this placement. Prone to hypersensitivity and over stress is one burden of this placement but that hypersensitivity still has the ability to grow emotional and inner strength. Here the ego is dismantled by a desire to truly serve and help others. Teamwork and honestly a humanitarian aspect exist in this house. Neptune is here with a connection to human emotion and spirit. They give back on multiple levels.

Neptune in the 7th: Alright, loss of self in a relationship, easily being influenced and used, lack of boundaries - this does exist. Don't boil down Neptune in the 7th to just this. First their ability to read others is uncanny. They know what others need and want. Part of them is driven to please or care for others and this has an ability to be a good thing. The ability to adapt to others can be a skill. They share themselves with many and while this has its downside, while they should learn to protect themselves, this can still be great. One book describes the 7th as a place where we share our humanity. Giving many access to one's humanity, is a positive. Online I know many love to throw around the word "mirror". That element has a place here. They can at times act as a mirror for another, helping them see things in themselves and to learn. Of course "being a mirror" is not anyone's responsibility, something to keep in mind. Relating to another can be a spiritual experience and in many ways, shouldn't it be like this? In the 7th, the ego is dissolved into others.

Neptune in the 8th: Yes their intuition is powerful, it is strong. Can we get an applaud for this? Many books and articles I see warn of a lot of danger and negatives with this placement. A warning of being taken advantage of financially is talked about frequently. If I had to distill it down, the warning would be this: don't let anything good slip away from you. Appreciate what you have in the moment and watch out for the wolf in sheep's clothing. Here walls are peeled away in terms of intimacy, giving, sharing, fears, and the unknown. Not an open book but they have no fear of vulnerability. It is their hunches that will protect them because without it there is just an urge to merge and to share. From this comes the danger of being deceived. The ego doesn't fear appearing weak, showing flaws, getting close. Maybe it isn't always that the ego is dissolved but shared. The self and its expectations, wants, needs are shared to whoever flashes vulnerability back at them. I would look at this as a place of bravery.

Neptune in the 9th: Something to be said about their idealism! Spiritual learning and subjects can take a seat here. "[there is the call] towards ritual and mysticism - or the illusions that pass for it." - Judy Hall. I think the 9th house is an area to be careful of in general - but that is a talk for another day. Be cautious of falling for spiritual illusions and being misled in the area of knowledge, education, morals, and religion. Be careful of blind faith. But Neptune here is in touch with the spiritual realm or the human spirit. Their own inner faith is not that of over confidence but a faith in the universe. Their beliefs overcome any of the ego's needs or insecurities.

Neptune in the 10th: Attracted to creative/artistic careers or careers that can heal/help/serve others - yes. okay. let's move on. Here we see the ego, the self being shared on a mass level. It is "dissolved" into the public sphere. No boundaries can be useful though, giving so many over access, honestly a possible good position for gaining "fame". But I don't like to label certain placements as the "fame" placement. You will find celebrities and public figures with all kinds of charts. But the idea that the public has easy access to them can be a real threat to be aware of too. They can be far reaching in their community or career. They make an influence on others which has its positives and negatives. They connect with others easily on a platform, through their art, or through their work. On an even larger scale, when thinking about society here is someone who can help make the world a better place.... or could set in motion harmful ideologies and emotions to cling to. An ability to see the wounds in society is a strength that would benefit many of us.

Neptune in the 11th: So sensitive to the collective, to the group, maybe even the mood of the room. There is compassion for their fellow woman/man. Being easily fooled/misled in a group setting can be a big negative. Being used by friends is a reoccurring theme. This is a very cordial, amiable, and accepting placement when it comes to dealing with others. Intuition among the collective and within the social realm is strong and this will help them to overcome issues with deceptive or unhealthy friendships. The ego puts down its sword and shield to connect with others in the most straightforward way. It can forge spiritual bonds with people that is unsullied by heavy expectations. Depth can be found in friendship, in a group, in an organization, among an array of relationships and depth doesn't have to be confined to romance or family.

Neptune in the 12th: If there was a place the ego would metaphorically "die", this would be it. Tapping into intuition, creativity, spirituality are strong but out of all that, I want to put the spotlight on how this gives someone a very deep ability to connect with the human condition and the human spirit. Kindness and forgiveness are learned here. I emphasize learn, not inherit, not natural, learned. Understanding when one is a victim that needs to be saved and when one needs to move past being a victim is important. Strength will always exist in the non-tangible. Strength exist in uncovering what is hidden. Strength comes from understanding and accepting what is within.

Welcome back to our latest - and last! - Deep Dive into the gameplay of The Sims 4 Nifty Knitting Stuff Pack. I’ve really enjoyed sharing the designs and development of this pack with you, and I hope to continue doing these sorts of posts in the future. It’s been a super cool experience, and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading these! In today’s post I’ll talk about the feature that is core to everything in this pack, Knitting! Once again, I have to remind you that we’re still in active development on the pack and so some things may change between now and the final game. Now, let’s talk about some nifty knits!

READ IT I PROMISE YOU GONNA LIKE IT!

In order to start knitting, you’ll need to purchase a Yarn Basket from the Build/Buy catalog. You probably remember voting on these baskets a while back. This was the winning design, presented to you now in all its colorful glory! Don’t like color? That’s okay, because we included a solid black and white variant.

We have one more knitting basket coming too! Remember this one?

The basket acts as the crafting catalyst(neat term, huh?) similar to the Easel or Woodworking Bench in The Sims 4 base game. But unlike those examples, the Yarn Basket is meant to live in a Sim’s inventory so that they can take their knitting anywhere they want to go. Knitting itself is relatively straightforward: click on the Yarn Basket in your inventory, OR, with the basket in your inventory, click on the chair you want to sit in while knitting (perhaps a rocking chair?) and select the Knit interaction. Your projects are saved to your Sim, so you can pause your progress at any time and resume later, and even juggle multiple projects at once. Starting a project costs a small amount of Simoleons for the cost of yarn, but nothing too outrageous.

(Children can knit too!) As a Sim levels up their knitting skill they’ll have access to new patterns. They’ll start with knitting socks and beanies, but as they grow more skilled they can tackle more challenging projects like sweaters and toys for kids. But if you only want to specialize in one thing - perhaps knitted mailbox cozies? - that's fine too! Just keep knitting anything and everything, and you’ll be level 10 before you know it. Speaking of knitting skill, sometimes your skill is reflected in your knitted work, or rather your lack of skill. Knitting projects can fail, and when they fail they can get weird. But it’s all subjective, and maybe you’ll end up accidentally knitting the cutest derpy companion, or the perfectly itchy sweater. No mistakes, only happy accidents!

(Just own it.) One of the niftiest parts of the knitting skill is unlocking the ability to Teach to Knit, where Sims sit down together and have a knitting pow-wow. We wanted this to feel special, so we got a really sweet animation for it (Thanks Haeju!). Now that you can infect other Sims with the knitting bug, no yarn ball will be safe!

(The knitting needles aren’t finished on the Teach To Knit interaction yet, but trust me it's SUPER CUTE.) So, what can you do with all these knitting projects? Lots of stuff! Not only can knitted objects be listed on Plopsy, but you can also Donate them to charity. If you want to surprise a loved one, try Gifting a knitted object too. If you want to destroy all traces of your knitted failures, you can Frog the object and start again! If it's a particularly nice Sweater that you made, consider Adding it to Wardrobe to make it available in Create-A-Sim to all family members.

(Everyone appreciates a nice gift!) We want Sims to be able to knit something for their whole family. Not only will Sims be able to knit Toddler Onesies, but Baby Onesies as well. So put your little grubworm in a handmade knitted outfit. I’m sure they’d thank us if they could! (And if they didn’t like it I’m sure they’d be polite about it.)

(Here’s a sneak peek at some of the concept art for new clothing for the littlest of Sims!) It also felt like a good idea to add an Aspiration to tie this passion for knitting all together. So if you want to master the fuzzy art of knitting, consider signing your Sim up for the Lord(or Lady) of the Knits Aspiration. With yarn running through your veins, there will be no knitting mountain too hard to conquer! Master the Aspiration and you’ll be rewarded with the Sacred Knitting Knowledge trait. What does it do? Lots of stuff! What does it unlock? Something special! Am I being vague? I am! Come on guys, I can’t share all the secrets quite yet.

As I’ve mentioned previously, we’re trying to get as much cross-pack functionality for knitting as we can. Cats can play with Yarn Baskets and Yarn Balls, there will be new Club rules for Knitting, new class electives at University, and knitting counts for Emotional Control, just to name a few. I’m hoping Knitting feels nice and snug alongside our other gameplay systems. Now let's have a chat with our lead Object Modeler, Beth Mohler! Conor: Can you tell us a little bit about what an Object Modeler does on The Sims 4? Beth: As an object modeler I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to make objects work in The Sims 4. This is actually a very involved process, and somewhat different from the wonderful work our environment team does. We work with designers, concept artists, engineers, animators, vfx artists (basically everyone!) to make sure that Sims can use an object properly in an animation, or that all of our objects will work with each other. Once we understand the design for a new object, we will create a rig, a block model (a very generic version of the object used to help us make more of the same object in the future), and a footprint (tells us where the object can go and how Sims move around it). Once those are tested by animators and other disciplines we can model the final version, create UVs, and add textures. We also hook up and test everything in the game to make sure it all looks good. There is a lot to think about when it comes to making objects because we know players can find so many interesting ways to place and use them in game. That makes it a very fun challenge to make them work with everything else we’ve built before. Conor: What feature are you most excited to work on in Nifty Knitting Stuff? Beth: I’d say I am most excited to work on the rocking chairs! I love that we are bringing them to the game and can’t wait to see them in some cozy living rooms or on porches. Conor: What are some of the challenges you are facing working on this pack? Beth: One of the biggest challenges is ensuring that the knitting itself looks good and is fun to watch! This is a challenge given that it needs to work for everything you can create. Figuring this out takes a lot of iteration between modeling, animation, engineering, design, and art direction so that we come to a conclusion that will work the best given our time and technical constraints. Another interesting “challenge” is the fact that I crochet as a hobby myself! When you are knowledgeable about something (yarn!) in real life, working on it in the game it can sometimes be hard to separate the things you know and may expect in reality from what is possible or best within a video game. I have to make sure to keep a balance and to conceptualize how we can best convert the knitting experience into The Sims 4. As someone who also generally enjoys interior design and architecture, this is actually one of my favorite challenges and one of the things I love about working on objects in The Sims 4. Conor: What is your favorite feature you have ever worked on in The Sims 4? Beth: I think it has to be a tie between the mini fridge or the robotics table in Discover University. That pack was the first time I got to really take an entire feature from start to finish. I’ve been with Maxis for a while, but I’m relatively new to The Sims 4. Both of these objects had some complex features we wanted that required a lot of iteration. I learned a ton about the technical aspects of our game during the process as well. I’ve also worked on a few very cool things between then and now, but those can’t be shared yet ; ) As a fan of The Sims since the very beginning I am so happy to be able to share a little about what I do on a daily basis on The Sims 4 with you! I haven’t been on The Sims 4 for quite as long overall, but some of you may also recognize me from my time on Sims Mobile where I shared some of our workflows on Twitter for making a juice bar. The Sims 4 Nifty Knitting: Knitting Deep Dive

SimGuruConnor has released a forum post providing details on The Sims 4 Nifty Knitting!

Welcome back to our latest – and last! – Deep Dive into the gameplay of The Sims 4 Nifty Knitting Stuff Pack. I’ve really enjoyed sharing the designs and development of this pack with you, and I hope to continue doing these sorts of posts in the future. Conor: Can you tell us a little bit about what an Object Modeler does on The Sims 4?

Beth: As an object modeler I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to make objects work in The Sims 4. This is actually a very involved process, and somewhat different from the wonderful work our environment team does. We work with designers, concept artists, engineers, animators, vfx artists (basically everyone!) to make sure that Sims can use an object properly in an animation, or that all of our objects will work with each other. Once we understand the design for a new object, we will create a rig, a block model (a very generic version of the object used to help us make more of the same object in the future), and a footprint (tells us where the object can go and how Sims move around it). Once those are tested by animators and other disciplines we can model the final version, create UVs, and add textures. We also hook up and test everything in the game to make sure it all looks good. There is a lot to think about when it comes to making objects because we know players can find so many interesting ways to place and use them in game. That makes it a very fun challenge to make them work with everything else we’ve built before.

SURREPTITIOUS - DRACO MALFOY

PROLOGUE: THE GIRL WITH A SECRET

SUMMARY: Leslie Greyscale is given advice. WORD COUNT: 1.1k NOTE: I’m so excited to start this story! I’ve had the idea since before Fantastic Beasts came out and now that I’m (somewhat) motivated, I’m thrilled to share! There will be a lot of chapters taking place in the past, as well as a mix of past and present storytelling in the same chapters, so just something to remember. Thank you for reading!! RELAX. BREATHE. FEET FLAT. BACK straight. Exhale. Focus.

Try harder.

Harder.

A pair of strained brown eyes pierced a man across the park who pushed his son on a rusty swing. The screams and groans the metal gives nearly set the girl in a rage. How is she supposed to focus with such a shrill sound? The girl considered leaving to go somewhere quieter to practice, but an old voice from an old memory reminds her that practice, even in the worst circumstances, is necessary for her to learn.

Rolling her knitted sweater over her clammy palms, a small girl of eleven with long brown hair and even darker brown eyes took a sharp exhale before cracking her neck. Balling her fists, she focused on the man once more. The boy had been easy; his small incomprehensible mind was full of nothing but rubbish. This made it simple for her to gain access. The older gentleman however had more secrets and life on his shoulders. She knew from the moment she saw him that it would be a difficult time entering his mind.

Leslie Greyscale could not describe her gift. It was not necessary mind reading, for the mind is not as mundane as a book, but not quite Legillimency either, which is the rare talent of being able to navigate through the many layers of a person's mind. Due to the lack of a better title, she called herself a Legillimen, this not only giving a name for her talent but also a label which isn't terribly known to the common wizard. Her father insisted that she was something more powerful though, more rare than a natural born Legillimen. Leslie's family line has had their fair share of the natural gift, however Leslie's father believed she was different from them. When Leslie was born, it was quickly deduced that she was given the ability to read people's emotions but that soon manifested into something much more complicated. With the proper focus, Leslie discovered she could wiggle her way into someone's mind, not only sensing what they are thinking but delving into memories or future plans, essentially seeing glimpses of a possible future. An Interview with Vital Enterprises CEO, Ash Eldritch

Note: this has been republished from the Runway.is blog article titled “Vital Enterprises: Providing Augmented Reality Superpowers to Industrial Manufacturing” by Sandra Miller

Vital Enterprises is a company based at the Runway Innovation Hub in San Francisco. The company was founded in 2013 with the original goal to pursue healthcare applications of the newly emerging Augmented Reality smart glasses technology. Upon digging deep into the many possible applications of smart glasses, Vital Enterprises shifted its focus to industrial sectors such as manufacturing. We recently spoke with Ash Eldritch, Vital Enterprises’ CEO and co-founder to learn more about how Vital Enterprises enables modernization for its enterprise customers.

RUNWAY: Ash, please share a high-level overview of Vital Enterprises.

VITAL ENTERPRISES: We build a software assistant that sits on a smart glasses platform. The smart glasses are worn by a technician who is performing some manual task. Our software brings in all of the information, team support and digital tools that they need. We provide heads-up work instructions, and instant access to expert support via Virtual Presence, enabling technicians to get their jobs done more accurately, to complete that task at a higher level of quality and to complete tasks that require high levels of skill. So our goal is to bridge the skill gap where there is a lack of expertise. We like to say we're giving technicians superpowers.

RUNWAY: Please describe use cases for Vital Enterprise software.

VITAL ENTERPRISES: Manufacturing is a good example where we help our clients address some pretty critical issues, including the huge cost of human error and the lack of efficiency in many areas where you are relying on some pretty archaic tools, such as old databases and paper work instructions. Use cases range from a trainee who is receiving instructions on their glasses whilst working on a manufacturing line, to a field technician who is performing some repair or maintenance tasks in the field. Our software can guide repairing equipment, safety procedures, training, and instructions. We help anywhere technicians working with their hands or doing something complex where they need to be operating at a high level of quality, effectiveness and efficiency. Other examples include aircraft inspections, wind turbine repair, safety checklists for mining equipment, and construction site surveys. There are hundreds of other use cases and we’re discovering new ones every time we meet a new customer.

RUNWAY: Help us understand the evolution of smart glasses technology.

VITAL ENTERPRISES: What we realized early on (2013-2014) was that the market readiness for this technology, as well as the state of the art of the technology itself, just wasn’t there yet. The hardware needed to catch up with both the vision that we all have of where this could go, but also with the needs of somebody who is going to be wearing this in an industrial setting for an entire shift. The level of comfort was limited because of the sheer weight of earlier versions. The glasses themselves would cut off your periphery, so your vision was fairly limited both by the field of view of the screens, and by the fact that you had all of this computing blocking parts of your peripheral vision. Things like the economics of the glasses, battery life, network connectivity also needed to be improved. With smart glasses, you’re trying to put the future onto someone's nose. Over the last few years and several generations of iteration, smart glasses manufacturers have been able to make them smaller and lighter, extending the battery life, expanding the field of view; all of these improvements have been great. Smart glasses have come a long, very long way.

RUNWAY: What is the state of smart glasses today?

VITAL ENTERPRISES: It’s really been just in the past year or so that smart glasses are truly robust enough for industrial manufacturing applications. Today, smart glasses provide the ability to be truly hands free while you're working, the ability to have your instruction always in view when you're working and the ability for us to leverage the point of view camera to enable a remote colleague to see what you're doing. Those are all massive advantages over something like a desktop or even a tablet - any kind of handheld device. We’re also now seeing a nice alignment with better market readiness and awareness by industrial sectors of what this technology is and how it can be beneficial.

RUNWAY: Is Vital Enterprises also in the hardware business? Do you make your own smart glasses?

VITAL ENTERPRISES: The glasses are a critical component of what we do, but we honestly wouldn't dream of building our own hardware. I know a handful of companies that have done that. It is an enormous investment cost and you would be competing against companies that are literally pulling a million dollars a month into R & D. I think Microsoft spent two billion dollars in 2017 on the HoloLens, for example, just in terms of R & D. There are about 30 companies building hardware right now.

RUNWAY: From where do your customers obtain their smart glasses?

VITAL ENTERPRISES: In almost all cases we basically offer the hardware and the software as a bundle. We mostly do that as a convenience business model. But we want to be a complete solution for all customers. Some customers come to us and say, well, we already have the glasses.

RUNWAY: And if customers are already using smart glasses, is that compatible with your software?

VITAL ENTERPRISES: Yes. And quite frankly, it's better for us if they are already using smart glasses. Some of the smart glasses brands we work with include Epson, ODG, which is a San Francisco based manufacturer, Vuzix, and RealWear as well. RealWear has a fantastic device that's built specifically for industrial applications. It has no buttons, which makes it 100 percent voice controlled and it does a fantastic job of that. We aim to be a complete solution partner because the customers that we go into tend not to have worked with this technology before given that it's so new.

RUNWAY: Please share an example of a problem presented to you by an industrial manufacturing enterprise customer.

VITAL ENTERPRISES: We have a multinational customer that is an Italian-based company that manufactures CNC machines, which are room-sized wood cutting machines. These are multimillion dollar machines which go onto their customers’ plant floors to manufacture furniture, for example. Every time one of those massive machines breaks down, you have two problems. One - you are immediately halting production, which costs the company money for every minute when they're down and not producing. Two - then you've got to send someone onsite. Expert support is provided by a technician traveling down to the site to diagnose the problem. If that technician doesn't have the expertise for that particular problem, then they send in another expert. However, for every industry that we've gotten into so far, the experts are getting aged out of the workforce and they're not being replaced. The nature of the work is getting more complex, as everything gets more complex in general. And so we're in a situation where the customer sometimes has to wait days to get that machinery back online. Our Italian client started rolling out our tech to their field service teams. That means that when a technician goes on site, they can instantly get access to several experts, and the experts can stay where they are. The experts are typically folks who have been around for a lot longer. They have families, they're more likely to want to stay put and not have to get on a plane every time a problem occurs. Our work with this client resulted in a significant reduction of expert technician travel costs and increased satisfaction for our client’s manufacturer customers.

Our work with Coca Cola provides another use case example. Their bottling lines run something like $24,000 a minute. And so when one of those lines goes down, obviously each minute means $24,000 dollars of lost revenue potential. They were able to use our software to get experts at the manufacturer of these bottling lines looking through the eyes of one of the line operators, and get repairs done rapidly without ever sending someone to the bottling site. By their estimates, Coca Cola saved hundreds of thousands of dollars with their first usage of the technology. As we spent time with them, we found that they have things like bottle change over procedures, which are frequently problematic and costly. You've got to change from a two liter bottle to a one liter bottle, for example. That is typically done by a junior technician - and they frequently screw up. We anticipate that providing step-by-step checklists to the operator, plus oversight from a remote senior technician, will dramatically reduce the frequency of these technician errors.

RUNWAY: As your experience working with enterprise customers deepens, what are some of the new capabilities your team is excited about.

VITAL ENTERPRISES: Being able to capture tacit knowledge from an expert performing a task, is something that we've just introduced. We can record structured work instructions including videos, photos and transcribed speech from someone actually carrying out the task while wearing the glasses. We turn those into step-by-step checklists that then anyone else can start to use. This is tacit knowledge capture, which I think is a huge, huge thing that we're going to start pushing more and more. When we start working with our customers on one of their problems, often, we then start to identify dozens more use cases with them.

RUNWAY: What trends in this field are exciting you the most?

VITAL ENTERPRISES: We believe that there are strong synergies that can be had with industrial IoT (Internet of Things) where this can be used to visualize in-place the data that is being generated from the machines and equipment that you’re working with. With the glasses, we can overlay all of this live data on your environment, to make you much more aware of what's going on. We're also starting to focus more and more on how AI (artificial intelligence) can start to take this technology to the next level. Rather than being a passive assistant tool, where you're basically pulling specific information and instructions you need, we'll actually be able to use AI to get a sense of your context, learn to understand the tasks you’re performing, to proactively deliver real-time data, guidance and support to you. That's really exciting. I think you are going to see a lot more of that increasingly human-like and human-centric task support, especially from us at Vital Enterprises.

RUNWAY: What should an enterprise customer expect when working with Vital Enterprises?

VITAL ENTERPRISES: We are a total solution company. We partner very closely with every company we work with. We will take the time to understand their business and their challenges. We help them to identify areas where we can have a real impact and then we'll also design studies to actually demonstrate the business benefit. We will identify real metrics that generally tie to bottom line cost savings or other ways they can generate benefits.

RUNWAY: What is the degree of scale you can address for your enterprise customers?

VITAL ENTERPRISES: Over the past five years, we've designed our solutions from the ground up for scalability. So we can gracefully scale to hundreds or even thousands of devices. That said, we advise our customers to roll out this novel technology in phases. We start with a pilot phase with somewhere from five to 10 users, tightly focused on a specific single use case. That typically takes two to three months. Then we go to a limited rollout, which can be anywhere from 20 devices to 50 devices - and that could be another six months. We're learning lessons at each of these stages and we're embedding the technology into day-to-day operations, getting people comfortable with it. A significant rollout is anything more than 50 glasses. This is where you start to realize very significant benefits at scale. Many of the companies we've worked with see an opportunity for this to ultimately scale out to thousands, and that's going to happen over the next several years.

Why I fell in and out of love with the Tales Series

Ah, Tales. I am both glad and bitter that they are now successful and popular today. They're still pumping titles every now and then, and all of them are being localized, which is great for the fanbase outside of Japan. I still enjoy their older games like Rebirth, Destiny R, and Symphonia, but I hate touching anything released after Vesperia. They did so many things right and their games had elements no other JRPG had, but they were even better at going downhill and ruining their series.

This is a historical account of my experience with Tales. What I loved about it, where things started to go wrong, and where I finally let go of a series I once loved.

Like many of the western fans here, my first exposure to Tales was Tales of Symphonia on the GameCube. I walked into a GameStop with my brothers, and on their demos I saw the opening of Tales of Symphonia. My first exposure to Tales was also my first exposure to an anime RPG. As someone who enjoys both video games and anime, it was an easy choice to buy this game.

I quickly popped it in and played with my brother and it was an experience I will never forget.

CHARACTERS/SKITS:

Tales has a unique cast of characters in the sense that they have way more dialogue and lines than your average RPG-- and therefore come off as having more personality and life. This is thanks to a staple trademark of Tales called Skits. Skits are optional dialogues throughout the entire game-- all you do is press a button and watch them interact.

Half of the time, they react to recent events in the storyline and the other half they're having light-hearted conversations about anything. The topics of these conversations wouldn't normally be brought up in a main storyline, so you find out about your characters than an average RPG.

In most RPGs, characters don't talk as much except during cutscenes and this can sometimes make the adventure seem lifeless. But the skits are like banter you have with your friends on the way to a restaurant. It gives the feeling that your characters are hanging out during their adventures. There's a life and personality to Tales characters normally not found in other RPGs.

Skits is a concept that was ahead of its time. Most Tales characters fall into some archetype which is not a bad thing, it's just unavoidable. But skits allow Tales characters to branch away from their categories by giving them more personality, development, and background.

As a gamer, it's easy to become emotionally attached to these characters and sympathize with their struggle. It's also why fans favor Tales characters over other RPGs. Whether Tales characters are better RPG characters in the genre is something I will debate against, but I can see why many others believe so.

BATTLE SYSTEM:

The absolute biggest draw of the Tales series is their battle system- characterized by their trademarked LMBS (Linear Motion Battle System). In all of their Tales games, 2D or 3D, Tales characters are controlled in real time combat.

Players can move, block, attack, or cast magic at will. This is a huge deviation in the JRPG formula, in which most of the combat is turn-based. Furthermore, Tales was way ahead of its real-time combat rivals because of how developed their LMBS are. Combos can be strung together, Skills added depth and options for each character, strategies can be set for AI-controlled characters, and guarding options all make the game more than just a button-masher.

In most of the Tales games, up to 4 party members can be deployed on the battlefield. And this meant multiplayer was possible-- which meant that for once, an RPG can be finally played with someone else! I played the early half of the series with my brother (and sometimes our cousin). It was run to riff on funny parts of the game but even more fun to play with someone else. Multiplayer made Tales even more of an enjoyable experience and I am sure many others can relate.

Unlike most video game series that upgraded the same battle system, Tales was pretty daring and significantly changed up the formula. Rebirth had 3 lines and cooldown timers for Arts, Destiny R had aerial combat, and Xillia introduced tag team combos. Even the sub-systems such as skills, learnable Arts, movement options, and combo system changed.

At the end of the day, each battle system shared the same concept of free-styled combat and that's what mattered most. The ability to string together your own combos and strategize your party members made the games endlessly fun to play.

WANTING MORE OF THE SAME:

After Symphonia, I craved for more of the same and imported the rest of the Tales games on the PS2: Destiny 2, Rebirth, Destiny Remake. I even imported the PS2 version of Symphonia because of its extras over the GC version. We imported Abyss because at the time, its localization was uncertain.

Even if I didn't understand the storyline, there were entire translated scripts of the game that we read while playing the game. But more than that, we played for the battle system and there were no regrets whatsoever.

For the first time, I joined a forum for Tales games and interacted with other people, joined in on speculations, had embarrassing (but high-level) debates, and constantly tried to keep up with the next Tales game.

Over time however, the Tales series changed in many ways and so do did my love for the series. Changes in management, business practices, and development gradually transformed the series into something else. I couldn't get into the characters anymore, or enjoy its battle system, and eventually I stopped playing the series altogether.

RECYCLING/REUSING CONTENT:

One of their earliest hallmarks of disappointment was how often they used the same material repeatedly. At first, they used to be a nostalgic reference to a classic Tales character but when you do it again for the next 3 games, it becomes obvious that it's just laziness at this point.

The earliest traces of this low budget tactic begins with Abyss. In Tales, Mystic Artes were ultimate attacks with amazing visuals. But in Abyss, many of their Mystic Artes were similar in visuals-- a circular glyph that deals a radius of damage.

Although it was not a huge deal at the time, it was the beginning of a trend. Namco re-used Abyss' aesthetics for the Radiant Mythology series, Tales of VS, and Tales of Innocence. DLC costumes that were first used in Vesperia are still being used 4 games later in Berseria. And instead of coming up with new Mystic Artes, Namco just slaps on old ones onto new characters even if they didn't suit the character.

What used to be nostalgic references to classic characters now became a cheap and lazy way to add content to their newer games. Ordinarily, there is no problem with a nostalgic cameo but when they are used repeatedly, game after game, then it's just obvious laziness at this point.

DECLINING SUBSTANCE:

After Vesperia, their games started to become hallow in both nature and substance, riddled with poor game design, or both. Recycled content was only one of the many factors. The bigger concern was cutting out traditional content in the games and selling them off as DLC.

Although Vesperia was the first Tales to have DLC costumes, they had the most in-game costumes of any Tales game to date. DLC costumes were not a controversial issue until Graces, which only had 2-3 sets of costumes for each character. The majority of available costumes were sold as DLC. This DLC trend went into full force with Xillia, which only had 4 costumes total. The traditional swimwear set were absent from the game and with that, the staple comic relief swimsuit scenes.

To make matters worse, these costumes were developed before released but were released on a schedule. So even if players wanted to pay for DLC content, they wouldn't have access to them right away. And finally in Zestiria, they took it to the next step and made DLC out of Artes, Mystic Artes, and Skits. Rather than providing meaningful and additional content that players were willing to buy, Namco instead decided to hide in-game content behind a paywall. Nothing about these tactics are fair or justifiable. It's just a greedy money grab at the expense of fans and quality of their games.

STORY/CHARACTERS:

I figured, okay fine the costumes are DLC now and there's a lot of recycled content. At least I can still enjoy the characters and story... Right? Wrong. Following Vesperia, the quality and writing of Tales took a nosedive of incoherent writing, falling deeper in cliché archetypes, becoming so full of itself as a series, and losing touch with their fanbase.

CHARACTER ARCHETYPES:

Graces marked the beginning of this trend, and thus the first steps to Tales' downfall. Let's start with the character archetypes, shall we? You have the goody-two shoes protagonist Asbel, ignorant of female affections, always wanting to do the right thing regardless of consequences, and all about protecting his friends.

This sums up 90% of your JRPG protagonists and some of the Tales protagonists can also fall under this description. But Stahn is a lazy stowaway with no ambition, Lloyd has his silly Dwarven Vows and questionable mathematics, and Senel is a loveable jerk whose lack of awareness can be attributed to his marine background.

Asbel on the other hand, has nothing other than his background that sets him apart from his archetype. His only motivation in the game is to protect his friends and nothing else. It's supposed to be beautiful and amazing because he would even sacrifice himself for his friends, but he's not that different than robot programmed for a single purpose.

Sadly, most of the characters from this point on have more or less the same amount of depth and personality as Asbel. You have some gems like Leia who fought tooth and nail to defend a hopeless Jude from Alvin, but you realize her character is wasted on Jude because it revolves around him. Instead, her character can be better spent finding someone else who deserves her.

Then you have Alvin the traitor, who is arguably the worst traitor of any JRPG series to date. At least Kratos was disguised as a mercenary. Sure he had his mysterious past, but nothing that would indicate he was a freaking Angel working with the organization that’s been chasing after you. Then you have Raven whose shadiness can be attributed to his silly antics, perverted nature, and propensity to drink. But one would never guess he was also a Captain of his own brigade!

Then you have Alvin who saves Jude from his predicament and then forces his mercenary services onto him, a wanted criminal. On top of that, he uses a gun which is technologically not possible on the planet he is infiltrating. You'd think a spy would make an actual effort blending in. So obviously, characters like Milla catch on and when confronted, Alvin makes a poor effort to refute her accusations which basically boils down to "I know you know but you can't prove anything." It's a complete mockery of the betrayal plot twist that the series has come to be known for.

So we have the same archetypes we've always had-- the oblivious protagonist, the childhood friend, and a shady traitor. Except now all they're doing is fulling a quota on a checklist. Yes, they each have their own stories and backgrounds but none of them are fleshed out with the same depth as the characters from previous games.

INCOHERENT WRITING:

Now, let's talk about the incoherent writing and my gosh there are so many examples of this. Let's continue with Graces and Asbel— whose friendship with the rest of the cast is as hallow as the games. The story downplays the impact of what 7 years can do to friendships.

The game doesn't address why Asbel never kept in touch with his friends over the course of 7 years. He never wrote to them or visited, and despite being the same city as Richard, the two never crossed paths for 7 years! In fact, the only reason Asbel comes back to his hometown is because his father passed away. If he didn't, who knows when Asbel would return.... if he ever thought about returning at all. In fact, Asbel brushes off the 7 years as "Oh it went by so fast." It’s as if Asbel was playing his own game too, experiencing the time skip the same way a player would.

Under those 7 years, he trained under instructor Malik so the two have a close relationship. But that's the thing, everyone's closeness with each other is supposed to be accepted by the player. It's not unbelievable that Asbel can reconnect with his childhood friends, but at this point they have all become different people.

So in many ways, it's like getting to know someone for the first time again. But the game doesn't do any of that. It just tosses the 6 characters together with the same old banter you're used to. But you don't understand what makes any of these characters close. What makes Asbel and Malik get along beside their relationship as master and student? What makes Asbel get along with Cheria and Hubert besides being childhood friends?

In Vesperia, you can see how the irritable Rita softens up to Estelle and the others. Yuri becomes an older brother to Karol. Everyone makes fun of Raven but they love him for his antics. And Judith is the sultry woman that playfully teases everyone. None of these characters except for Yuri and his dog Repede knew each other beforehand. There are no childhood friends here—these are 7 strangers who come together and become a family. When playing the game, you can see how these characters grow close.

I don't get that from Graces, or any game that follows it. What I get instead are a cast of characters who are stuck together and make do with it. There is no emotional investment between anyone and the impression I get is that they can just walk away from each other's lives without a care in the world. Any closeness just comes off as forced, because the writers stopped putting in effort to make a convincing cast of people who are supposed to be friends.

Moving on, let's revisit Alvin the traitor. So after the party finds out he's a traitor, guess what? Nothing happens! The party is upset with him but he just worms his way back in and shrugs. The party does nothing about it, and so they carry on awkwardly.

And not awkward in a way that's amusing to the player, but awkward in that the player can't even begin to comprehend the situation unfolding in front of them. Alvin obviously still has his own agenda intact even after coming back, and the betrayals continue happening. So it's not a single betrayal, but a recurring event in the game, and it makes no sense why the party allows this to continue.

I stopped playing the series after Xillia, but the general consensus about the next game Zestiria is that it is even less comprehensible. Scenes are so poorly directed and just happen without explanation. Characters ignore a problem when an actual person would just be like "Wait, what is going on? I demand an explanation."

SKITS:

So we have a declining quality of storyline and characters... How can it get worse? Oh wait, what about the skits that added to the characters and background? Nope, they ruined that too, and it started with Graces.

Remember how half of the skits were about the storyline and the other half was silly banter? Well, now they have become too silly and gimmicky. You now have random splashes of images invading the skits which tries to convey the scene of the game. I thought I was listening to a skit, not reading a visual novel. If you want to make this scene cinematic, then make a cutscene instead.

The topics have changed from ordinary topics that trail off to funny banter, to nonsensical gibberish that laughs at its own jokes. It's as if they were catering to meme culture and hoping that it would spread to the internet and blow up or something. It's as if, after several Tales games and years of development, the writers are writing skits for the first time again.

On top of that, most of the skits stopped making sense in context or flow of conversation. In Graces, most of the skits are triggered by standing at a Discovery Point. Sometimes the conversations are about the actual location, in that the characters talk about something they are reminded of. But most of the time, they talk about something entirely unrelated to the Discovery Point and it makes you wonder what was the point of having skits based on location.

In Berseria, I listened to a skit between Laphicet and Magilou, except Velvet was there randomly too. Ordinarily in skits, only the portraits of the participants are shown. Even if they are not originally part of the conversation, their portrait would be off to the side, to show they are eavesdropping. And if they leave the conversation, then their portrait disappears.

In the conversation between Laphicet and Magilou, Velvet appears out of nowhere and speaks her mind. She doesn't speak for the remainder of the conversation, but her portrait remains. But the remainder of this conversation only happens between Laphicet and Magilou. You can't tell if Velvet is listening in or not. If she's not there, why doesn't her portrait disappear. And if she is there, then why isn't she saying anything?

All these annoyances about the series would be minor in their own capacity, and the games would still be bearable. But all of them are present at the same time and collectively become an unbearable experience. It just proves that the Tales series is declining as a JRPG series.

BATTLE SYSTEM:

Okay, so what about the battle system? You imported a good amount of the games just to enjoy its battle system right? Yup, even that is ruined believe it or not. For some strange reason, Tales suffered a series of questionable design choices ever since Vesperia.

Traditionally, attacks have been divided between normal attacks and Artes. You attack with regular attacks and then use Artes to complete the combo. Graces changes this formula by getting rid of normal attacks and turning everything into an Arte. Normal attacks are now the new Artes button, and the Artes button is a different branch of Artes.

This sounds like a great idea at first, especially when it was originally advertised as Style Change LMBS. But in reality, only Asbel's fighting style changed between the two trees of Artes. For magic casters, their second Artes tree were just spells. For Melee attackers, they were just different Artes. In the end, it was just a different way of sorting the Arte tree that ultimately did not add anything. Graces had positive battle system changes but this was not one of them.

Xillia returned to the traditional format of attacks but they unified the Overlimit and Symphonia's Unison Gauge into a weird tag team function. In Xillia, characters can be tethered together and provide mutual support. The player can activate the Overlimit gauge to unleash devastating tag team attacks.

However, Overlimit required two characters to be tethered in order to activate and have access to Mystic Artes. In other words, a character cannot fight alone and go into Overlimit or use Mystic Artes alone. In adding a team functionality between characters, Tales marginalized the role of an individual character. It was a sacrifice that didn't need to happen, and this is because of poor game design.

POOR GAME DESIGN:

Fast forward to Zestiria, which attempted to introduced seamless battles. Before, characters were transported to a field of battle upon encounter. Now, enemies are fought in the fields or dungeons encountered with no transition. Upon victory however, a transition still exists for characters' win poses. Obviously, these had to stay in Tales which only made seamless transitions pointless. In fact, seamless transitions became one of the most criticized elements of Zestiria.

First of all, Namco did not accommodate for the camera angles being obstructed by objects, walls, or other obstructions. Traditionally, battlefields took place in a flat area with no obstacles and within a large radius. The camera can zoom in or out depending on the player's settings and number of enemies son the field. The player's perspective in Zestiria however, was constantly being blocked by trees, walls, or even the enemies themselves.

Second, there were no environmental interactions which is what players were hoping for since they existed in Vesperia. For example, using hazardous flowers to stun an opponent or taking out bridge switches to prevent enemy reinforcements. One would think this primitive form of environmental interactions would be present in a game whose battlefields were shaped by terrain and geography. But this was not the case, which begs the question... why even have seamless transitions in the first place? It goes back to Namco not knowing how to use good ideas.

THE ALISHA CONTROVERSY:

When discussing the flaws of the Tales series, it is impossible to leave out the story behind Alisha and Zestiria, the biggest controversy of the series. It was so serious that Hideo Baba disappeared from public appearances and ultimately left Namco. This controversy illustrates a problem bigger than any that I have mentioned thus far— which is that Namco has become so full of itself that it produces what -it- wants rather than what the fans want.

When Zestiria was revealed, the first two characters shown were Sorey and Alisha. They revealed figures for both of these characters, and there was also an Alisha cosplayer on the scene to further promote the event. JRPGs typically have a male and female lead, so these must be our hero and heroine right? And the first characters shown are always the lead protagonists, right?

Well, according to the producer Hideo Baba, if you thought Alisha was the heroine then you made an incorrect assumption. That's right folks, Alisha was never the heroine of the story and in fact, only a temporary party member for a small portion of the entire game.

Despite being part of DLC costume sets, being the first female Sorey comes across, and the character responsible for initiating Sorey's journey, she is not the heroine or a permanent party member. When fans expressed their outrage and confusion, Baba only responded with "We never said she was the heroine."

Then why was she one of the two revealed characters when Zestiria was announced? Why announce her at all, release a figure for her, and include her in DLC costume sets? This character received promotion and attention and fans were excited to play a lancer, of which there are very few of in the series. For Baba to say "we never said she was the heroine" is a mockery to all of the fans he misled up to this point.

Namco will never come out and say it but what really happened was that there were last minute changes to the story that replaced the intended heroine Alisha with Rose. It turns out that Hideo Baba was smitten with Rose’s voice actress at the time, so much that he abused his authority as producer to shift focus onto Rose. This major change in heroines affected the rest of the storyline, and writers simply did not have enough time to rewrite the story to accommodate for this change. The end product resulted in an incoherent storyline that felt incomplete and full of holes.

In an attempt to appease fans, Namco released a (temporarily) free DLC chapter focusing on Alisha after the events of the game. However, this does not change the fact that Alisha was shafted because of Baba's personal interference so the DLC chapter did very little to please the fans. And Hideo Baba was never heard from again.

This incident provides us with insight to the management responsible for calling the shots in the making of Tales games. These are people whose desire to create a Tales game are out of alignment with what fans want. Business perspective and economic thought cannot be applied to explain their behavior. The only difference between their games and fan made projects is that they are making the same garbage but within the company.

Sure there are still fans that eat up everything that Namco serves them but nobody is asking for a Tales-themed cafe, a Tales of the Abyss musical, a letter from Richard to Asbel as a bundle exclusive, or an anime of a game that was just released. These are products that Namco is throwing out there because this is what they want to exist.

It's sad how Namco is mishandling the Tales series so badly. Aside from God Eater, they don't have Go Shiina composing any music. They have a trademarked battle system that no other company can replicate. And there are so elements and quirks to the Tales games that cannot be found anywhere else. These wasted resources can be better spent giving fans what they actually want like…

REMAKES:

Namco realizes the value of the past Tales games, that's why they ported Destiny 2 and Rebirth onto the PSP, Abyss to the 3DS, and Symphonia and its sequel to the PS3. What Namco should really be doing however, are remakes of older Tales games. Specifically, they should replicate the success they had with the popular Tales of Destiny Remake.

Destiny Remake's assets were made from the ground-up. It introduced an entirely new battle system with aerial combat and an alternative to the traditional TP system. Its story and skits were fully voiced and redone. Its graphics kept 2D sprites complete with beautiful animation and effects. It will go down in history as one of the most satisfying battle systems in a Tales game.

And yet this success has never been replicated ever since. Fans were hoping that these remakes would be the beginning of a new trend. New fans would get introduced to older games with modern designs. Older cans relive their older favorites in a new way. And fans outside of Japan could get a second chance at localization.

But instead of remaking the next entry in the series, Eternia, Namco decided to remake Innocence and Hearts on the PSVita. These titles are nowhere close to being the most popular titles in the series, but Namco wanted to remake them because the DS' hardware limitations prevented them from putting in everything they wanted. Therefore, they were remade on the VIta.

The quality of work put into these remakes comes nowhere close to Destiny R's. Although voicework and scenes were redone, the character models were mediocre and the battle system was largely the same with a few improvements. They did however, retcon in new characters— a trend that Namco seems to be fond of since it was done to Vesperia and Phantasia.

What's even more bizarre is that Namco introduced the concept of the Triverse Gate, which connects the worlds of Innocence, Hearts, and Tempest. However, this Triverse Gate is only present in the remakes, not in the original games. It's a very interesting concept to make a connection between 3 unrelated games, but it only serves as an end-game dungeon. Even in the remakes, the Triverse Gates have no bearing on the story whatsoever. So what was the point of connecting these games in the first place? The only thing the Triverse Gate has done for the series is make fans wonder why there hasn’t been a Tempest R.

Regardless, Hearts R and Innocence R performed terribly. Even their combined sales don't come close to Destiny R, which sold over a million units. In fact, both of the remakes sold less than their original releases. This failure is actually quite an accomplishment in of itself, and again proves that Namco is out of touch with their fanbase.

CONCLUSION:

After reading this, I hope you can understand why I once loved Tales and why I hate it right now. It's like a relationship that worked out perfectly fine- distance wasn't a problem, money wasn't a problem, approval from friends and family wasn't a problem. But Tales just couldn't be satisfied staying the same and wanted to be something different for no reason, and in ways I could not accept.

I don't think I am asking for much here. I just want Tales to be good like it used to be. It doesn't have to take after Vesperia, Symphonia, or the legendary PS2 trinity. I just want the battle system to be fun again, for the characters to be less gimmicky and try-hard, for the content to actually be there, and for the storylines to make sense.

I don't want Tales to do open world when they can't. Or for them to make a mockery of skits and post-battle victory screens. Or to buy a Rutee and Leon for the 5th time. Just give me a complete game that's fun to play and has likeable characters like the good ole days. Please.

In Character is not Out of Character. Huginn does stupid shit I don’t agree with sometimes. Talk to me if you’re concerned; you are just as responsible as I could be for your experience.

But mostly I am pretty laid back and just here to have a good time, I don’t sweat minor violations of my rules and will probably just talk to you if it bothers me.

SEMI-SELECTIVE

I will follow you back once I have read your rules and biography and figured out if our characters would be a good fit or not. If you don’t have those that may be why I haven’t followed you back yet. For the most part I’m going to be threading with mutuals. Feel free to drop into my ask box if you like in the meantime.

I am really leery of themes of suicide and choking/strangulation, personally. They aren’t triggers, per se, but I do strongly avoid them. I am okay with mild gore but do not seek it out.

If it happens, it happens. I tend to ship chemistry above all else, but Huginn is more prone to one-night stands and the like just for fun. Huginn is also every bit a Raven and can be flighty for lack of a better term. A relationship with him may or may not last just based on who he is.

SMUT

I will not smut with a known minor. It is illegal and I will not go to jail so some kid can get their jollies. By approaching me for smut you are assuring me that you are over the age of 18 regardless of your country of origin.

If I find out you are a minor and approach me for smut I will block you immediately. I take this very seriously and out of consideration for your partners you should too. You may ask for threads that are non-sexual in nature, but please don’t put me in the difficult position of having to block you.

STYLE

My personal preference is multi-paragraph, third person, and present tense. This is mostly due to having a limited number of icons. I am willing to be flexible for my partners though.

BIOGRAPHY

GENERAL

A creature born of the World Tree Yggdrasil, Huginn is a raven daemon - one of four familiars - of the Allfather, Odinn. He is not really a raven as in the animal, rather he is the embodiment of thought in a physical form.

He is tasked with flying over the Earth each day to seek out information for his Master. Sometimes he chafes at the restrictions of being confined to the job during 12 of the daylight hours. His brother takes the night shift with the remaining 12 hours.

He is in indentured servitude, yes, but the Allfather also raised him from a fledgling alongside his brother, Muninn, which gives him an equally worshipful and hateful relationship with Odinn.

He has a very long history of mixing with humankind and has grown very affectionate towards them. He has had many wives and husbands over the years.

SKILLS AND HOBBIES

SKILLS - Huginn is very good at spear fighting, bareknuckle boxing, & Capoeira. He can easily gather information due to his nature. He might know things about your character, but this will be discussed OOC in the interest of better storytelling.

HOBBIES - He enjoys frequenting bars and concerts, starting fights, and generally using physical tasks to shut out the mental noise. He also likes to paint.

SUPERNATURAL POWERS - He can gather almost any information so long as it is written or spoken. He can also become incorporeal, omnipotent, & can change his shape. He is effectively immortal and is incredibly fast. He can grant boons to persons in his Favor, though those are often him using his network of contacts and information to get them what they want. He can use Yggdrasil to travel to other realms or locations within a realm. He has the limited ability to teleport objects to and from his home is Asgaard - this is mostly restricted to his spear, his tie, & objects that can fit into a pocket or the palm of your hand.

WEAKNESSES AND PHOBIAS

WEAKNESSES - He does not have a physical form between 7 am and 7 pm. From 7 pm to 7 am he cannot use most of his thought based abilities. He often forgets things, since he is thought and not memory. His head is always a buzz of discarded ideas that might not be his just from his day job being what it is. He can die temporarily.

He is cursed so that in his human form he will show the scars from any supernatural weapon. He hates it, being very vain.

PHOBIAS - Being bound or constrained in any way is likely to cause him to panic. He has spent so much time being a servant that the physical reminder of restriction is too much for him. Put him in a cage he cannot escape and he will lose his mind.

POWERS RESTRICTIONS - He has only very limited access to his abilities during the night time hours. At best he can appear to teleport using his speed and dodge more effectively due to his incorporeal ability. But that does not last long. If he is “killed” he will cease to exist on the mortal plane, dissipating into ash and reappearing in Asgaard. It will take him nearly a day to recover and he likely won’t be seen again until after his next shift on the job.

He can only have up to 3 Favored Persons at a time.

APPEARANCE

RAVEN FORM

In raven form he is larger than average - black with a white patch on his chest. He could be mistaken for a form of Pied Raven, an extinct variety of raven from the Faroe Islands. He displays unusual flexibility and can do things normal raven should not, such as holding a coffee cup by the handle and drinking from it.

HUMAN FORM

HEIGHT - 6′6″ EYES - Gray, reflecting no color like normal gray eyes. HAIR - Black, sometimes appearing like a single mass or with feather texture depending on how much he is focusing on something else.

SCARS - Missing the last joint of left ring finger, scar from chin through his lip on the right, scar crossing from left cheek through right brow, deeply puckered scar over chest linked to similar scar on his back, slash across throat. He has a tattooed brand of Yggdrasil on the nape of his neck, covered by his hair. The rest of his body is a hodgepodge of scar tissue and corded muscle.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION - He is built like a scarecrow to outward appearance but possesses wiry muscle to back up his big mouth. His skin is deeply tanned and he appears to be between his late 20s and early 40s. He has a constant unshaven scruff on his face and dresses in business casual clothing - black dress shirt, black slacks, black shoes, red tie - but wears it in such a manner that it looks like he just rolled out of bed. The tie is the only actual physical part of his clothing - it’s a gift from his ‘sister’, Freki. FACECLAIMS - Russel Brand & Danny Sexbang.

Zahra Time Travels in Cuba

As a child going through my parent’s black and white high school pictures, I assumed that's how life was back in the day: colorless. Regardless of 10-year-old Zahra’s imagination being shattered when her mum told her she was an idiot for thinking so, reality finally settled in in Cuba. I never thought time traveling would be possible in my lifetime but here I am today, totally jaw-dropped at how history, politics, and structures have been preserved through time in a country like no other.

Cuba is a cliche when it comes to tourism as it receives over 4 million arrivals annually which is one of the main sources of revenue for the island. If a resort in Varadero is not your calling, Havana is a must for a more Cuban experience.

Wifi/Technology

Due to the lack of accessibility of internet in the country (communism, remember?), it was surreal to see people NOT on their phones when walking down the streets. The only technology seen out was the occasional camera in a tourist’s neck. Restaurants and clubs didn’t have any lavish social media handles advertised nor were websites to check reservations a thing.

At the same time, I found myself pushing to sharpen my Spanish listening skills and genuinely enjoyed every moment because I didn’t have to worry about constantly using the translation app. We did, however, download an offline map to help but navigation consisted of us asking kind strangers on the streets for help (and always getting it).

In order to use the internet in Cuba, we had to buy an “hour card” for 3 CUC at certain squares in the city which activated the wifi. We made friends with a local who led us to the bicycle boys at the corner of our street who as a “side business” sold wifi for 1 CUC!

Cars

I can't even drive but I often found myself fangirling over the shiny Ford models from the 50s. It felt like I was in a movie. Imagine any color, Havana had it (yes, even white with pink polka dots). We’d planned to rent a convertible and go around the city but we quickly realized how much of an expense that could be.

Tourists doing that looked totally douchey in their golf shirts and sun hats with orbits the size of Saturn’s rings. Instead, we posed next to parked cars for pictures (which was equally douchey).

Art

I’ve always been a SUCKER for sexy graffiti and when you add poetry to that, it really gets me going. I remember signing out poetry books by Ernest Hemingway and trying to learn Spanish from Pablo Neruda. What I’d learned from literature and history courses finally presented itself in real life. Everywhere we went, there were quotes and drawings of writers and painters.

The neighborhood we lived in particularly loved Salvador and his work was plastered all over the walls. These were some of my favs.

“Life is a step, death is a career”

The first day, we rushed over to La Bodeguita Del Medio, the place that lays claim to giving birth to the Mojito.

Numerous writers, artists, and celebrities were regulars of the Bodeguita: personalities like Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nat King Cole, Julio Cortázar, Joan Manuel Serrat, Ernest Hemingway, and Salvador Allende patronized it. The rooms were full of curious objects, frames, photos, and the walls covered by signatures of famous or unknown customers, recounting the island’s past.

Not going to lie, the Bodeguita was SUPER touristy and the mojito wasn’t the best but being in the presence of literary geniuses felt magical.

Afro-Cuban Music

I’ve been a fan of Buena Vista Social Club (BVSC) since I started dancing salsa. Our Airbnb hosts insisted we go to the BVSC concert, it was 60 CUC and a complete tourist trap. Though I enjoyed the show, it was not worth the amount we paid and the attendance solely consisted of rich retired European couples.

Nonetheless, Cuban music is so much more. The streets of Centro and Old Havana are bouncing with tunes of reggaeton at any time of the day. There would seldom be a restaurant that did not have a live band playing. Street musicians sang at the sea side of Malecon and everyone jumped at the opportunity to teach us a couple of salsa moves.

We did end up going to an underground salsa club with local friends to recover from the first night of the tourist trap. It was muy caliente.

Lack of Globalization

Perhaps one of the biggest sensors of time travel was this. There were no name brands aside from clothes which once in awhile featured a Nike or Adidas logo here or there. I’m talking no McDonalds or KFC or Gucci or Prada stores. What was sold in Cuba, was made in Cuba.

Food

It wasn’t weird after a while to be refused a dish on the menu because the restaurant did not have certain ingredients. We’d been eating pizza for several meals in a row because it catered simple ingredients and was sometimes the only thing we knew on the board. However, we did find this whole in the wall cafe we went to 5 days in a row. The waiters and bartenders at Cafe Brown became such lovely friends, 5/5, would surely recommend, and when we were offered a chance to indulge in rice and beans with plantain, there was no hesitation.

Architecture

After the revolution, a lot of the bungalows owned by high Cuban society were abandoned as they fled for Florida. The same structures live on as embassies and hotels now.

There aren't many high rises which make it extremely gratifying to look onto your balcony and not have the view blocked by a concrete jungle. What I love most about Latin and Caribbean cultures is that, even in poverty, homes are as inviting as ever. Most walls have a fresh coat of a bright paint which instantly brings positivity into your heart.

Viva la Revolution

The Cuban revolution took place over half a century ago but the spirit is very much alive. Flags are painted on every wall and pictures of Che and Fidel are proudly hung in some homes and businesses.

Many people in the west aren't the fondest of tourists but Cubans greeted us with smiles anywhere we went. Even if there wasn’t an English speaker around, people invited us in for coffee and pizza. When we asked, locals gave us directions to places we’d enjoy that weren’t just tourist hubs. Cuba is not only alluring due to its ability to stop the clock, but it’s people make it what it is.
