3 and 6 for the multi-f/o asks!!
Hi hi!! Thank you so much for the ask!! I'll answer these for my current yandere mains!!
3. It’s movie night! Who chooses the movie? Does anyone disagree with the choice?
A movie night with them would be an absolute mess, especially when it comes to choosing a movie. Eventually we'd settle for an old timey horror movie, much to Charlie's dismay...
Charlie has a hard time seeing anything that involves blood, real or not. So he usually ends up covering his eyes or looking away from the screen whenever there's a death scene going on. I'm more than happy to have him bury his face in my shoulder when he needs to look away!
JD originally wanted to watch a horror movie because he thought I'd get scared and ask him to hold me, but once he sees how much fun I'm having with the movie, he's a little disappointed but still happy to spend time together. He makes comments about some of the special effects and silly acting every now and then as well!
Jacob genuinely enjoys movies like these so he's very focused on everything happening on screen, while also offering me some of his popcorn and resting one of his hands over my shoulder. He usually has some fun facts about the movie's production and cast members to tell!
6. It’s Halloween! Will you and your F/Os do a group costume? Or will you each do your own thing? Are there any arguments about what you all should go as? What do you all end up choosing?
We definitely wouldn't be able to agree on a single theme for our costumes, but we'd definitely dress up and go out to just roam the streets, drink a bit and have fun!
Charlie would dress up as his current favorite videogame character or as Jeremy, from Be More Chill! Either way, it'd most likely be something that not a lot of people would recognize, so the night would go smoothly and quietly for him!
JD would dress up as Jason Voorhees, both for the play with their names and because the mask would be the only thing he'd need to craft or buy. Whether or not the machete he's carrying around is real or not is something he absolutely refuses to answer...
Jacob would dress up as a werewolf, mostly because it'd be something easy and cheap for him to get/make! Eventually he'd get annoyed with the fake fangs and the lisp they gave him so he'd just slide them in his pocket for the rest of the night

All the bedtime asks with Murphy 💖 love you
💙 Does F/O let you sleep with them?
It took a long while for Murphy to allow me to sleep with him, like it took for him to let me in, he has so many walls around him. Which I gently bust to bits.
The first time he allowed me was during a storm actually. He saw how desperate I became for company and secretly, he craved for my closeness so we ended up on the bed.
He found out he wasn't uncomfortable at all and in the morning suggested it to be regular thing. I almost choked on my breakfast because I got so excited & happy.
❄ Who is the blanket hog?
Both of us, Murphy and me own so many blankets it's not an issue at all,we both get cold quite easily.
We're literally buried under at least 6 blankets in winter and cuddling.
☀️ Who wakes up the earliest?
Murphy, he's always been the early riser and ever since he developed PTSD and Silent Hill visit he hasn't slept very well, so he leaves bed early.
Though when he cuddled me the first me he slept like a log for first time in years.
🌙 do either of you stay up late regularly?
Yes, I do on weekends and holidays, I lose track of time & get absorbed into my hobbies too easily so suddenly I just realize it's 2 am! Murphy finds it cute I'm able to focus so deeply to what I adore.
Murphy stays up for different reasons. The most usual is he can't sleep due to nightmares and memories. He very easily stays up until 4 am. He tends to distract himself with anything that comes to mind, but he gravitates towards TV soap operas.
⛈ are either of you good about sleeping through storms?
No.
I'm easily disturbed in my sleep and can't sleep unless it's dead silence. I hate thunderstorms to booth. Storms make me feel physically ill, so the side effect is I cling to Murphy the whole time.
Murphy well, he has complicated thoughts on storms. He used to like them but after Silent Hill, he began to be on edge whenever storm brews. In that town, storm meant more monsters.
💡 do either of you need a nightlight to sleep?
Murphy would. In theory I think. But when I tried to offer to buy one he denied the need for it.
Even when he tends to panic when he wakes up to dark room and won't calm down unless I'm holding his handor he's cuddling me.
If I didn't think those things are bright as fuck I'd buy him one. Animal themed.
⏰ how hard/easy is it to wake up your F/O?
Incredibly easy. Us both actually. Once Anne Marie (a friend of Murphy's, they have complicated history, both we're in Silent Hill) came for visit after we got introduced to one another and the doorbell from other side of decent sized apartment (its not even loud, its the softest it can be) woke up us both.
💬 has F/O ever talked in their sleep? If so, what's something they've said in their sleep?
Murphy talks in his sleep. He repeats the name Charlie a lot, the name of his son.
I know from that he's having nightmare, he will catapult awake while screaming the name.
There are times when it's my name instead. He hugs me tight right after, so I'm sure those aren't good.
He doesn't only have bad dreams! He has told me seeing dreams of us going to museums (he adores those!) and exploring fancy castles in England.
Murphy told me I utter his name sometimes but not nearly as much as he talks.
😴 has F/O ever done anything in their sleep (nuzzled you, sleepwalk, fell out of bed, etc.)?
Murphy doesn't trash around when he sleeps. His limbs are all over the bed so it's not surprising that his hand is unconsciously touching my cheek tenderly lol.
📢 who snores?
Neither, I just can't see Murphy snoring & I don't snore.
👕 Does F/O sleep with or without clothes? Would you be comfortable sleeping with them if they didn't?
I would be comfortable if he didn't. Unless it's heat wave, Murphy tends to wear loose shirt to bed. Green of course.
I asked him once and he jokingly said it's "protection so you don't touch my chest" I got offended lmao.

Someone within a twenty feet radius loves you!
(Part 2/3, Theme 1)
Betty was going to delete LoveAlarm from her phone.
She should have deleted LoveAlarm off her phone.
But come Wednesday afternoon, she still hasn’t, and she couldn’t have told you why. A glutton for punishment, probably.
>>No, you’re just a hopeful romantic! Veronica texts her while she’s in the library during study hall, working on an English essay. >>The app is all about proximity. You don’t know who you simply haven’t been within twenty feet of yet. Or maybe they just haven’t downloaded the app.
Maybe so, yet Betty can’t help but feel like there is a fine line between hopeful and masochistic. She wants to text Veronica back with a passive-aggressive message about how Veronica has it easy with a bunch of pings and *at least* two people around the school who love her. But she doesn’t because that would be shitty.
The point is, LoveAlarm is still on her phone and she’s doing her best to forget all about it and her unexpectedly complicated feelings about Archie. That’s when it happens: she feels her phone buzzing across the wood table.
Frowning, she checks it, assuming it’s Veronica with more encouraging platitudes. Betty can scarcely believe what she sees, however:
1.
Someone within a twenty feet radius loves you!
The red heart on her screen is practically vibrating off the phone as she watches in shock. Her eyes dart up and around, landing on every face surrounding her. There has to be what, twelve people in the library that could be within twenty feet of her? It’s a popular location for study hall, after all.
Someone is in love with her.
Was it Trev? Chuck? Sweet Pea? Alex C.? Tyler? Dilton? Of course it occurs to Betty that it could be a girl, but she isn’t up to date on who’s Out and who Veronica and Kevin are convinced are closeted. It definitely isn’t Ethel Muggs, who has started scowling at her every chance she gets lately.
The number on her phone goes back down to zero, so either the person turned their phone off or they just left her radius. Another frantic glance around only shows her the front doors swinging shut. Frowning, Betty realizes that Sweet Pea is no longer in the library and Trev has gotten up and walked over to a shelf in the back. Nobody seems to be doing anything with their phone.
Biting her lip, Betty considers her options, but there’s really only one solution.
*********************************************************
Jughead is in the Blue & Gold, fingers clacking away at the typewriter Betty had gotten him for his 16th birthday, Sweet Pea’s teasing words echoing in his ears, when said Hitchcock blonde comes bursting into the room.
“Juggie!” she exclaims a little breathlessly. She has one of those determined grins on her face that make his heart go pitter-patter.
Thankfully, his phone is off, so it can’t tell on him.
“I need your help.” She drags another chair up to his desk and sits down primly, spine straight and ankles crossed. /If you have the time./
/Of course. What’s up?/
Betty hesitates then, biting her lip. /I downloaded LoveAlarm,/ she says finally, arms and voice tentative. /Someone pinged it in the library earlier and I want you to help me find out who./ With that, Betty slaps down a piece of paper with a list of names on it. Jughead swallows hard.
He’s not an absolute moron, he did expect this. When presented with an unknown suitor, of course Betty Cooper would immediately start to investigate.
He could just tell her, but again, vulnerability is scary. As Tim Kreider wrote, “If you want to enjoy the rewards of being loved, you also have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known.” It’s a certainty that she’ll figure it out eventually. Maybe he’s being a coward, but hey, Betty *loves* solving mysteries.
Jughead doesn’t expect her love in return, he’s just flattered that he was the first one she thought of to help her figure out who pinged her LoveAlarm.
/Why are Sweet Pea and Trev’s names starred?/
/They left my radius around the same time my LoveAlarm went from 1 to 0./
When Jughead had decided to sneak into the library earlier and make her phone ping while he hid in the stacks behind her, he had been counting on the other students around her as cover but now, seeing that she’s zeroed in on two guys in particular has a pit opening up in his stomach.
“You’re a fucking idiot, Jones. Just tell her,” Sweet Pea had told him.
His hands feel clunky as he tries to sign. /And if it’s one of them, how would you feel?/
The question stymies Betty, who shakes her head and shrugs, gathering up her things. /I don’t know. Let’s just figure out who it is and I’ll figure out how I feel then./
“Okay,” Jughead ends up saying to her retreating back.
Thursday is simultaneously the most fun and the most torturous. In the morning, Jughead finds himself helping Betty stalk Sweet Pea down G Hallway, chatting him up to stall him near the Chem classrooms and surreptitiously waving her over once he ascertains that Sweet Pea has his phone out and turned on.
“Hey, Sweet Pea!”
Betty practically bounces as she comes to a stop next to him, eyes bright but biting her lip nervously. She’s balancing a 13”x9” tupperware container in her arms, and her phone is in her left hand, turned away from them so they can’t see LoveAlarm open on the screen.
Of course Jughead turned his own off as soon as he arrived at school. What do you think he is? An amateur?
“'Sup, Coop?” Sweet Pea doesn’t know a lot of sign language, but he smiles down at her easily. Jughead is overwhelmed by a sudden urge to kick him in the shin. “Are those for me?” Sweet Pea approximates sign with some basic pointing from the cupcakes in the tupperware container before pointing at himself.
“Uh…” Betty’s sneaking a glance at her phone and for a moment, Jughead is worried. “Yes, you can have one. They’re Boston Cream Pie cupcakes.”
He groans on the inside. Those are his favorite.
“Don’t mind if I do,” Sweet Pea murmurs, grabbing one and peeling away the liner so he can take a bite.
This time, Jughead’s groan may have been audible.
Betty catches Jughead’s eye and shakes her head. Great, that’s one name scratched off their list. To Sweet Pea, she says: “I better be off, or I’ll be late. Bye, guys!”
Jughead watches her leave, ponytail swishing from side to side. Sweet Pea watches him watch her leave for a moment before he clears his throat.
“Listen, Jones, I don’t mean to rush you and all, but...having a cute girl come up to you all smiles and offering you a cupcake—a damn delicious cupcake at that—might make a guy catch feelings. Just saying.” With that, Sweet Pea takes another bite of the cupcake, getting chocolate icing smeared all around his lips. Every chew he takes seems like a threat. A helpful threat.
“Lima Charlie,” Jughead sighs. Message received and understood. Sweet Pea’s older brother had been in the army and thus, he and Jughead had spent years using military jargon over walkie talkies as they snuck around Sunnyside. With a nod, Sweet Pea gives him an unnecessarily hard pat on the back and heads down the hallway.
When Jughead ducks into the Blue & Gold in between the next classes, he sees the tupperware container on his desk, next to his typewriter, a sticky note on top:
The rest are yours! I made your favorites, after all. -B
God I love you, Betty Cooper.
Lunchtime is nearly a disaster. Betty had roped the two of them into helping the Theater Club finish some set decoration for a production of Almost, Maine. All for nothing, because as it turns out, Trev is out for a dentist appointment. Still, Jughead manages to have fun being half-heartedly helpful while he eats his lunch—two ham sandwiches Betty brought in for him as a bribe for helping her with this—and Betty’s having a good time too, as evidenced by the fact she’s smiling so hard her eyes crinkle, and even when she tries to scrunch up her face to be mad at him eating more than painting, it just collapses into another giggling fit.
It’s when lunch is over and they’re heading up the aisle to where they’d left their things that Jughead remembers he left his phone on. Betty has hers with her, since she thought she would be testing Trevor’s phone for pings, and she’s barely five feet behind him.
Crap.
He hurries ahead and grabs it, depressing the power button. Just before the screen goes black, he could have sworn he saw his LoveAlarm app begin to open.
He doesn’t let himself think anything of it. In the rush, his thumb had probably hit the app button.
**************************************************************
Thursday night finds Betty pondering the mystery that still remains: the identity of the person who loves her. Sweet Pea has been eliminated from the list of possibilities, but Trev Brown remains a question mark.
Curled up in her thick socks and comfiest sweatpants, hair wet from her shower and starting to curl, Betty stares at her laptop screen as she contemplates their next step. Her and Jughead had bonded over their mutual love of The Baxter Brothers and Tracy True books as children, and they’d conducted more than one investigation together over the years, so it’s natural that Betty had gone to him for help with this, even if it’s a little embarrassing.
But why, a niggling little voice asks at the back of her mind. Jughead’s question comes back to her: what will she do if it’s Trev? She doesn’t know.
Trev’s...nice. He’s cute, and smart, and Betty doesn’t have the faintest idea what she’d do with the knowledge that he’s in love with her. Go on a date with him, she supposes, to at least see whether there is something there before she...breaks his heart? That’s what you do, right? You go to dinner at one of the few nicer restaurants in town or you go see a movie at the Bijou.
She doesn’t really want to think about this, Betty realizes, as her attention wanders from her Sleuthster search results to the ads along the column on the right. One ad catches her eye and she gasps, straightening in her chair and grabbing her phone. Her thumbs fly over the keys as before she hits [send].
<<Do you still have the reels for Rear Window?
>>Yes, why?
<<We should set the projector up in my basement and watch it this weekend. I’ll supply the snacks.
>>Capital idea, Betts, but how are you going to get all that junk food past the K9-level olfactory senses of Alice Cooper?
<<It just so happens that my mom and dad are going to visit Polly in Boston this weekend.
>>Cambridge. Just say Cambridge.
<<As long as we dispose of the evidence and air out the basement with some Febreeze, mom will be none the wiser. I’m sure Archie will donate his trash bin to the cause.
There’s a longer pause before Jughead replies.
>>It’s a plan
>>Speaking of plans, what do you need me to do tomorrow re: Mission Pings?
Betty grins and taps out the basic framework of how they’re going to corner Trev before the pizza party at lunch, but Jughead will have her phone on him so he can feel for her ping, and listen for Trev’s ping. A thought occurs to her and Betty suddenly feels selfish for insisting that Jug help her.
<<I meant to ask you...have you downloaded LoveAlarm?
>>What do you think?
>>Besides, I already know what it would say.
A terrible feeling, like a vise in her chest, takes her over as she reads and re-reads those words. How can Jughead believe this? Almost immediately on the heels of that thought is the reminder that Betty herself had been despondent on Tuesday when she allowed the melodramatic thought that ‘nobody was going to ever love her’ to take hold.
<<That’s bullshit. Any girl would be lucky to fall in love with you!
She means her words. Jughead may be antisocial, he may wear that crown beanie practically all the time, and okay, yes he can be the most extra fucking weirdo on the planet...but he’s also clever and passionate, she’s seen firsthand how caring and considerate he can be, and of course he’s objectively attractive.
Betty stares at the window that faces the Andrews’ home, with the roller shades that are always pulled down lately, and pictures Jughead’s face in her mind, how he’s a bit on the pretty side, especially with that mouth. She thinks about how jealous she’s been of that wild head of dark hair in the past, when she’s seen him with the hat off, and how over the past year he’s shot up another inch or two and seems to have filled out, especially in the arms—
>>From your thumbs to God’s ears, Betts. Night, I’ve gotta be up bright and early to help you catch the worm.
She lets out a huff of laughter and rolls her eyes even though she knows he can’t see her.
<<Night, Juggie.

The Third Book I Read In the Dark: You mean there's more and this time it gets GAY! Sign me the F*** UP!
Sovereign by April Daniels
As Day 1 of my time in the dark ages was coming to a close so did my second library book and even though it was late and I should probably go to bed (and by bed I mean the couch in the living room closest to the fireplace because sweet sweet crackling warmth) I couldn’t help but at least crack open the sequel to the phenomenal book I’d just finished. I was set to have wisdom tooth surgery the next day bright and early but with the state of the world I had doubts it would happen so, you know...YOLO.
Now, I know what people say about sequels, never get your hopes up too high because usually they will let you down, but I was so pleasantly surprised to know that the curse of bad sequels passed over Sovereign without leaving its mark. I loved this just as much if not more than the first book. If my review of the first book is anything to go off of this is gonna be a mess so let’s get this love fest on the road!
Unicorn Rating:
Blurb: Danny is finding her feet as Dreadnought but things are far from easy especially with curve balls coming from every angle. Things are getting harder, darker, and maybe a bit...gayer!
Disclaimer: I will try my best to not spoil anything from the book, but my book loving rambles may give more away than a traditional review. Here we go! Ramble time!
Review:
Diving right into this I genuinely liked this book just as much if not a bit more than the first book. Now there are a few reasons for that, one is that we don’t have to deal with Danny’s parents much, my feelings on them were made very clear in my last review. The second was that, although we were introduced to a few new characters, we were mainly focused on characters we already knew and just got to know them more so it did what I think all sequels should do; build on what you already know while adding just enough new stuff to keep you coming back for more.
The plot of this second book is a multi-layered beast that I had a blast peeling back piece by piece, while also not being too difficult to follow. It is for sure a much darker plot than the first book, but as someone who’s second book looks to be pretty dark and emotionally...well, ouch, I can really get down with this kind of character heavy story that really depends on the reader being invested in the struggles of the characters more than an overly complicated plot. The twist also still got me there at the end. Comeuppances sure are fun to see. Okay, I behaved for a whole two paragraphs and talked about the plot now to really let ‘er rip!
Oh boy! Oh jeeze! How do I want to do this!?! Ummm spin the wheel-o-characters and see where it stops? Sure! That's a solid way to write coherent and professional reviews (I know logically I should start with Danny but I’m saving her and a particular western themed vigilante till last for GAY reasons)!
The Wheel has chosen and I am going to talk about Karen first! So, Karen, this was a character that when she first showed up I was utterly confused and then got so freaking excited so freaking fast when I figured out who she might be! I literally closed the book and went, “That ain’t a backpack!” Now I am gonna try and be extra careful about how I word this next part to try and not spoil anything, but please someone ask me questions about it so I can gush about it more in a spoiler filled response! So, if you read my Dreadnought review I genuinely liked Valkyrja and I was so sad we weren’t going to get to see more of her after the ending of the last book, but then Karen quite literally broke on in to make my day. She honestly fascinated me. The struggle she is going through reminds me so much of something from one of my favorite animated shows, RWBY, that has been an ongoing struggle since Volume 4 for the character of Oscar. (I won’t say anymore cause I don’t want to spoil the book or the show, you should read the book and watch the show, they are both awesome and then come into my ask box and we can talk about how interesting it is). She was a character that I felt deeply for because of her struggle, but also was conflicted on because of reasons that I can’t get into but man...just Karen, why, Karen why?
So next up we have more from the local literal wizard, Charlie, who is as sleep deprived and as eclectic as ever. He is a good example of what I meant when I said I was glad we were able to spend more time with characters we already knew. He was instrumental in the plot even if he was mostly a background player, but I cared about him when the crew got into big fights because I already knew him and knew that he wasn’t a fighter. He was a friend in a world where there weren’t a ton of those to be had.
Oooo let’s do another newcomer, Kinetiq, who admittedly has a bit of beef with our girl. Danny has been getting a lot of press for being “the first transgender superhero” which is not at all accurate she is just the first pretty white superhero with Legion-sized support and funding behind her and Kinetiq never lets her forget it. They are a non-binary Iranian-American superhero that has been capin’ way longer than Danny has but hasn’t gotten nearly the recognition. They are such a cool character and really rounds out the team of superpowered teens.
Let’s dig into our villains next. I still hate Graywytch with every fiber of my being and the burning passion of a thousand suns, but that isn’t ever gonna change, so we can move on before I have another melt down like last time. We wouldn’t want that now would we? Maybe you do. I don’t tell you how to feel. So now we can talk about Sovereign (I know we got his civilian name in the book but I have forgotten it because I read these books in 2 ½ days and I have the memory of a brain damaged goldfish so we’ll just go with that), he was a character that we met him and I immediately went “Sooo, he’s the bad guy right?” Everything he said just oozed “entitled asshole” and “I’m more important than you.” And I don’t necessarily think that is a bad thing. Now I do like to have some more complications in my villains, some grayness and not all black and white, but in a story so hinged on Danny struggling internally with so much I think having a really deep complicated villain would have been too much to handle at the same time.
I’ve contained this as long as I can and I can’t contains it no more…*runs to the top of the nearest mountain* I LOVE DOC IMPOSSIBLE!!! I know in my last review I said she gave me kookie grandma character vibes even though she didn’t really fit into either one of those categories, but she still just fits like a puzzles piece into a hole in my heart of characters I love. The reveal at the end of Dreadnought that she was an android only made me love her more and then to see how much she is struggling with what Utopia used her body to do against her will just makes me want to give her all my love and support even more (Maybe I just have a thing for characters breaking away from controlling abusers and fully accepting and owning themselves for who they truly are *cough* Yasha from Critical Role *cough*). And no spoilers but the ending scene with Danny and her made me squeal/tear up with happy tears.
So now on to the main event or well...the main character and her grapple handed revolver wielding bandana wearing paramore. Now I’ve alluded to it in the other character opinions but Danny, well, Danny goes through it in this book. I remember while I was reading it thinking how tired I was, part of that was probably because I had been reading literally non-stop for two days but also I think I was really picking up on Danny’s fatigue in that it just never ended. As soon as one trial or tribulation ended she had little or no time to rest before she had to force herself back to her feet and say, “Alright, whatcha got?” Danny also goes to some pretty dark places, and as someone with some experience with PTSD it was really compelling to read a character who was working through those kinds of thoughts and...not handling it well. She was rash and angry and lashing out, she was far from the perfect picture of composure her publicist/lawyer wanted her to be, that’s for sure. Danny is yet again a fascinating character to follow along in her journey because she has so much depth and is so compelling because she is so flawed.
Now Danny’s dynamic with Calamity/Sarah this book was just...so good. Now do I think they are perfect and amazing and gonna go off and have a perfect little capin’ life together...honestly, no. But that is why I love them so much. I was convinced Sarah had the budding start of feelings for Danny all the way back in the first book but Danny had SO MUCH going on she didn’t notice and Sarah wasn’t gonna push the issue and probably didn’t even really know what she was feeling herself. I am a connoisseur of gay media after all, but the hints were there. When nothing came of it I didn’t feel let down because it wouldn’t have made since in the story of the first book especially with Sarah losing her arm and everything else. Then this book came around and turned everything up a notch. Danny is realizing she is soooo much gayer for Calamity than she thought, and Calamity/Sarah is really being the only person who isn’t letting Danny slide when it comes to the self destructive behavior she has been kind of reveling in which I am so here for. In relationships, good relationships, you have to be able to call each other out, call bull shit on one another, without it getting personal. We see that in real time develop between Sarah and Danny. We also see that Danny really depends on Calamity and her wit and know how in battle situations because, lets face it, Danny is the muscle, but Calamity is the brains. The fact they are able to work together so well is just a testament to the fact I think they will have a good relationship going forward. Maybe not all sunshine and roses all the time, because that isn’t realistic, but they will support each other and protect each other in the way that matters and counts. And I am a soft bitch when it comes to stuff like that.
My final thoughts on this is that I really liked the way, after such a hard and trudging journey (I say that with as much love and admiration as I can), we were able to have an ending that radiated such softness, such hope for a future that wouldn’t be full of so much pain and struggle. I needed that ending. I needed that exhale to be able to just settle with Danny, and Sarah, and Doc, and the rest of the crew after the holy hell storm they had to go through in this book. I know there is supposed to be a third book in the Nemesis series but I would be okay with it ending here. Sure, there are some unanswered questions plot-wise, but I am happy with where our characters landed and by now y’all know me, I’m in it for those sweet sweet character driven stories so I’m good. That doesn’t mean I won’t read the third one when it comes out, but I’m in no rush. My reading list is currently lording over me with a baseball bat and looking mighty threatening so I should probably start on that. *nervous sweating increases*
Queer Wrap-up: Let’s jump right into this tally. Of course, we have our protagonist Danny who is living her best life, well not really but it’s a figure of speech, as a transwoman and trying to shine a light on trans superheroes and doing an ‘eh’ job at it but at least she is trying. Now we did get to see another side of Danny’s identity in the fact she is not only trans but also a lesbian. Now this wasn’t hidden in the first book, but it wasn’t the focus by a long shot, and I gushed a tad in my review about Danny’s irrefutably adorable gay panic at meeting her celebrity crush, Valkryja, but other than that and a few lines here or there the focus is definitely on Danny’s identity as a transwoman in the first book but this one brings her lesbian identity out more and I loved to see how the two mixed and how there was never any questioning there. Danny is a woman who is attracted to woman, so she is a lesbian...easy peasy. Love that for her. Now onto what moved this from a four unicorn rating for the last book to five for this one. We get the lovely romance between Sarah and Danny confirming that Sarah falls somewhere on the spectrum, though she never defines herself in any way other than loving Danny, and we know her and Charlie have dated in the past so we can assume she is also attracted to men. She could be bisexual, pansexual, we don’t know and she never says and honestly it doesn’t matter. I’m just gonna sit in my happy little queer bubble and watch her and Danny be cute. We also have the additional rep of Kinetiq, the kick ass nonbinary superhero that joins the team. They give us additional gender identity rep outside of just Danny and they are snarky and awesome to boot.
So yeah this more than earns that last unicorn by building and expanding on what the first book started and I also believe for the amazing rep and deep dive into the mind of someone being trans and just living their life as super powered and fantastical as it maybe, which is something I cannot personally speak to, I think this earns a place in the Sparkly Unicorn Hall of Gay! I swear this won’t only be YA super hero series, remember Raven: Pirate Princess is in there too!

So this book took slightly longer than the others to read mainly because I had to go to the next town over to maybe have wisdom tooth surgery. Well, that didn’t happen cause the whole state was one day out of an ice storm and was still walking bow legged but hey I got to eat something that wasn’t reheated soup for the first time in 2 days. French fries have never tasted so good! Once I dug into this book though it flew by like the rest. Remember that I found all three of these books in the library I work at so check the shelves of the ones near you, you could be surprised what they have on their shelves just waiting to be discovered. Trust me, I’m a lesbrarian.
But now I was sat most of the way through Day 2 and I was officially out of library books! Whatever would I do? Find out next time on...The Books I Read In the Dark!

episode origins p1
i was watching moriah earlier today and was wondering what the significance of the name moriah was, so i searched it up. i’ll explain it here in this. i wanted to learn which episodes have titles derived from pop culture, literature, etc. so i put together this list. it’s not complete, feel free to reblog with more!
why did i waste hours on my life on this, you ask? i don’t know.
season 1
pilot: obviously, all the first episodes of shows are called pilots. nothing new here.
wendigo: they’re fighting a wendigo
dead in the water: the phrase means “unable to function, move”.
phantom traveler: the name of the demon they’re fighting
bloody mary: based off the legend
skin: shapeshifters, also there might be a meta about how it’s a metaphor for dean
hook man: they’re fighting a hook man
bugs: bugs
home: they go home
asylum: they go to an asylum
scarecrow: scarecrow
faith: the concept of god first comes into play here, i thought that was pretty interesting. that’s why it’s called faith, duh. dean + faith is explored.
route 666: racist truck yes
nightmare: sam’s visions
the benders: i think it’s based off of the bloody benders, a family of serial killers
shadow: meg’s stalkery?
hell house: it was literally a hell house
something wicked: originally chanted by WITCHES in shakespeare’s macbeth. the full line is “something wicked this way comes, open locks, whoever knocks”. obviously the shtriga is a witch and it refers to that.
provenance: painting provenances, it’s in the episode
dead man’s blood: they use dead man’s blood
salvation: being saved or protected, like the boys and john do with the family
devil’s trap: the devil gets them in a trap. and they built a giant devil’s trap too.

the usual suspects: based off of the 1995 movie
crossroad blues: based off of the robert johnson song (fave!) [x]
croatoan: i like this one. okay, so you guys probably know about the whole roanoke/croatoan thing in the 1600′s. so there’s a theory that the settlers were wiped out by a disease (similar to this town). also, the town would disappear off of the map.
hunted: gordon hunted sam
playthings: dolls, but the little girl was the grandma’s sisters plaything
nightshifter: a shifter in the night
houses of the holy: based off of the led zeppelin song and album [x]

a very supernatural christmas: i’m not sure. i think it’s based off of a christmas album?
malleus maleficarum: a 1400′s book of witches. latin for “hammer of the witches”.

time is on my side: based off of the rolling stones song [x]
no rest for the wicked: a biblical quote that means “evildoers will face eternal punishment”. also, “one’s work never ceases”.
season four
lazarus rising: in the bible, lazarus is the righteous man, which makes dean the righteous man. and he rises. so.
are you there, god? it’s me, dean winchester: based off of the judy blume book (maybe?), are you there, god? it’s me, margaret.
in the beginning: they go back in time
metamorphosis: with the rugaru but also sammeh

two minutes to midnight: this phrase is commonly used as a countdown to a global catastrophe (i.e. the fucking apocalypse)
swan song: someone’s final performance before retirement (i think this is about both brothers because it’s sam last battle and dean’s last fight before living with lisa)

(I apologize in adv 4 yeeting my trains of thought at u in such quick succession) You know what would be interesting (on top of *waves hands* all the other stuff I yeeted at u earlier for Charlastor), a narrative significance being given to both Charlie & Alastor's musical numbers over time, like at 1st they're separate or Alastor would burst in &steal the show, but as their relationship grows evener &more mutual, they have one that turns into an actual Duet? Thoughts? Feels? Ur opinions?
…[P2 of the Music Charlastor Duet Thing] Im just a huge fan of themes& symbolism I guess? Like, there’s a possibility that w/ Charlie & Alastor’s shared love &propensity for musical #s that it could be used to illustrate the current nature of their relationship &signal when it changes? Yea, S Y M B O L I S M gets me every time, also Alastor tryna parse all these STRANGE FEEEEEEELINGS is lovely, thank you.
Lol it’s fine! I actually drew a super sketchy thing of angel!Charlie so i ‘m just gonna xD
leAVE IT HERE (i don’t know how to draw wings i m sry)
That would actually be perfect. In the show I better see something of the like (and I’m sure we will as Charlie develops). Right now, Alastor holds all the cards and all the influence. It’s his respect, his favors, and his abilities that have a chance at making the hotel possible. My hope and assumption is as the hotel becomes more and more successful (and, again, Charlie’s character develops) she will gain the respect of her patrons and her people as a whole and begins holding a bit more control of the project than Alastor.
It should be at that point when she realizes that she does have control that she can step up to him an sing back to assert herself. It would be difficult after all the years of suppressing that part of her and being told that it was wrong. So that would also be a reason for the slow burn to finally being able to sing toe to toe with/at him.
I’d like to think that the Charlastor relationship in song would be a duel of power and control, especially as they get to know each other and Charlie steps out of her shell in that sense, before they finally learn to sing equally and together, in support of each other rather than against.
In this world, they may resonate on an instinctual level, but its more so because they come from the same cookie cutter shape, to simplify it (though end up painted different colors or on the opposite ends of the moral spectrum). It would take WORK for them to truly resonate equally.
Alastor would have to come to terms that he can’t have the level of control that he typically craves, not if he wants to keep her. Not to mention, that the more he cares for her, the less control he has over himself. He would utterly hate the feeling and consider throwing away the entire project all together until he sees her and realizes that he is f-ing weak.

April 21st, 2019 - Pat’s Easter/Post 4/20 Donk Souls Stream
Pat played another stream of Donk Souls, back again with Magnum Jr. Stream went on for a little over 3 1/2 hours, so there’s quite a bit to note
Recaps a bit on yesterday's stream, telling the story of Magnum Jr.
Is interrupted by piss as he explains how he wants to find a loincloth for Magnum Jr, we are still on the fight for as naked of a Kong as possible
"Suns out guns out here in Lothric" - Pat, 2k19
Thanks some good subbers
Waluigi subbed up, thank you Waluigi
Vordt of the Boreal Valley is a fun name
"Hey.. hey, man.. hey.... alright bye, guess I'll see you later, man." - Pat @ a skeleton lookin’ enemy who walked away from him
Magnum Jr. has an arrow through his neck is he ok
4/20 was successful because he didn’t do weed due to it being an illegal criminal activity
"I don't want to perry.. what do i look like... Matthew?"
Has a very long stare at the chat ".................Matthew Perry"
Bonk bonk bonk souls
Gives a few more gifted sub shoutouts
Half-logan?
( Chunk of the stream is missing about right here. Only about 30 minutes, sorry about that )
He doesn’t drop pants
Beeline for vort
Memeshart is giving good gamer advice ( I’m sorry Pat, we all know Memeshart is the supreme gamer here )

God dammit, dogs. He’s killing the bone dogs.
One of this weird turtleback men is actually my friends that wants to hang out with me

More dog hate. He’s getting mauled by dogs. “Please lord of Dark Souls don’t let these dogs kill me”
“Why can’t I use ember? Is it because I already am bird shit?” nice joke.
Tropical freeze is such a good soundtrack. He’s done into the past and he may switch to it towards the end
He wants to bottle feed the kittens. He feels the best way to get a kitten to drink out of the bottle is by convincing them they really don’t want it to drink out of the bottle
Just realized he doesn’t know what the fuck is going on in this game after noticing for the first time a person is growing into a plant. Now he’s wondering why the people in this town are turning into trees. Angel b: they’ve commited treason greatest victory : they’re turning over a new leaf
He wants to make today and tomorrow pizza days. And he’s got a big thing of lactaid so he’s set to commit this mistake
He’s working on the environmental storytelling. That’s why he likes it, you have to put it together
If Ken Levine made this game he’d had made it clear by writing on a wall or something but not here
Dark Souls II: spooky stuff here in dark souls. That’s why the game is not called light and breezy souls
He got box stabbed, but he’s having a nice time souls
“This is my friend, Johnny, get it?” - We didn’t get it
“This is my friend, David”
“This is also my friend, Nick”
“Johnny cage.. because it’s a bunch of people in a cage” ( can confirm joke landed only for like two people )
This area gives Bloodborne vibes. Sorta medieval Bloodborne

“Memeshart, play Despacito” Another great joke, Patrick
We’re testing Memeshart’s knowledge boundaries
Memeshart lore: They were picked up from a shipwreck by the current memeshart
Pat doesn’t remember this part being so annoying ( he also doesn’t remember he had clothes for the other characters )
Again with the Johnny/David/Nicholas Cage joke ( but now we all got it )
He’s avoiding killing non hostiles ( he definitely killed them in his main files, though )
Grim Acceptance: The emotion that bopping to The Entire Buck Bumble Theme for 3000 Bits elicits
He’s not particularly excited for the Sega Genesis mini. He didn’t have a Sega so he’s not particularly nostalgic
Bastard Sword: “I am kind of a bastard.”
22.48 Faith’s here
X i s one of hs favorite tracks in the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack
dumbassrights was gifted a sub. a good username, we can all agree
Unspoken chat rule: You aren’t allowed to say you got pizza without also saying the toppings
“He- he packed a bowl, but it was 420 yesterday!” - Pat
Very close to having the loincloth
“Love a big rat”
He doesn’t lock on a lot of enemies, especially big enemies, with enemies surrounding
Even more dog hate. Sorry, can’t relate.
Onion man is with us. he did not help with dog enemy.
“This guy sounds like Paul F. Tompkins doing Alan Thicke”
He’s good friends with the big archer giant. Friendship goals.
Bijan: “Can anyone explain the plot of Dark Souls?” Pat: “No.”
“It’s time to probably die”
Onion man is sleeping, chat decides to spam z for good slumbers
Lore check: this is the son of Magnum Kong , Magnum Kong Junior and he’s trying to find his dad, his papa, his daddy.
Went full “That’s rough, buddy” with “They really just tied a bunch of people to these burning wheels, huh….. rough..”
“I’m not good at archery, but the point is not about doing well, it’s about having fun.”
( sees enemies ) ( gasp ) two of them! ( dies )
Memeshart comes in again to say Pat missed a chest. Thank you for your service, Memeshart
Memeshart was right ( as always )
enemies: throw orbs pat: Is that allowed??
Still hasn’t seen the bone ball. Boneball watch 2k19
“Perfect for us whomst love to hate wear pants”
Spitballing this part because he hasn’t played it.
( picks up a reinforced club ) “I’ve joined the reinforced club. The club is me. I am the club.”
“goin’ on a quick loin cloth quest”
“I’m not sure what burning an undead bone shard does, but 420 was yesterday.” - I am not sure what this means but he isn’t wrong, I guess?
We’re gonna go burn an undead bone shard in a loincloth
“Loincloth is a bit more modest than previous ones but we got the legs exposed which is important” - good fashion advice from pat
“I do like the swing of the cloth it makes you think you might have a little peek if you get lucky”
“I’m touching a lady hold the fucking phone dude. Did I fail the touch?”
Young Man Charles was in the background for like 5 seconds and chat went absolutely nuts. As they should.
“I just wish we could get the ass out more in this game. I guess they cut down on the ass.”
Pat yeeted the sword master.
We’re gonna fuck up a tree. He’s the first or second big boss in Dark Souls 3
Content Warning: Nasty Boss. Pat’s gonna smack this tree’s groin area.
Faith is somehow not fond of this boss. I wonder why
Charlie showed up but Pat is busy busting these veggie’s nuts
Pat’s still adamant about not using the whip: “I’m not gonna whip this tree dude’s nards”
“Watchin’ Highlander on 4/20!”
Does not want to be hollow, would rather be ‘plump and svelte’
“I love when my elaborate attack doesn’t hit.” - A relatable gamer feel by Pat
Pat is having a sweaty one today
“We should clay-less…. We should mackle-less ( old man groaning noises )”
“I think the gentleman doth mackle too much.”
Oh, it’s drag JK Rowling o’clock! sipping_that_tea.jpg
According to Pat you psychologically cannot poop standing up
“Why did she say that? why did she do this?”
Chat says that babies poop standing up. Pat responds with, “Babies aren’t like us.”
“I’ve had enough poopoo peepee talk for today. Fuck JK Rowling.”
Chat is going full trans rights for seemingly no reason, it’s beautiful.
Was that little man always there? We may never know. Pat definitely does not remember the lil dude though, but seems to appreciate his presence nonetheless.
Here goes the french champagne
c h u n k y r o l l i n ‘
admin duderave put that he spilled cottage cheese on himself in chat, “duderave… how much cottage cheese was spilled…”
admin duderave was laughed at for spilling cottage cheese on himself. it be like that sometimes.
Aerospoon back at it again gifting about 10 subs today. Nice goin’, buddy, doing God’s work on this fine Easter
He was talking about his next stream and got distracted by Charlie, as you do ( the next stream is tuesday at 8pm est )
He’s got the whole day off on Tuesday bc he worked pretty much all week due to traveling
After clicking around for a minute, decided to raid thatguyTagg, and said goodbye
End of stream!

Okay but Dad!Charlie would be so S O F T especially like the first few days after bringing your new little boy home.
WHOOP LOOK AT THAT I’M IN LOVE WITH CHARLIE NELSON
“Are you sure you don’t need anything?” Charlie asked, his brow was creased in concern as he watched Y/N bounce their new-born up and down. Y/N gave him a sweet smile that he knew to be solely reserved for him, and now their little boy James.
“I’m fine, Charlie, you need to go,” she said, her voice was soft and gentle and did well to put Charlie more at ease with the idea of leaving them.
“I don’t want to,” he pouted. “I’m not meant to be working for another two weeks,” he sighed, coming over and gently smoothing his hand down the few wisps of hair James had grown.
The smile on his face as he looked at his son was so wide Charlie wondered how it even fit on his face.
“I know, Charlie. It’s annoying,” Y/N agreed. “But John needs you - you know he wouldn’t call you in unless it was serious,” Y/N pointed out and Charlie sighed, nodding. “Me and James will still be here when you get home,” she promised and Charlie nodded again, slowly taking the bundle from her arms as James began to fuss again.
“But what if you need something while I’m gone?” He asked, pressing a kiss to the top of his son’s head and holding James close to his chest as the four day old boy quietened again.
“You’re only going to be gone for a couple of hours, Charlie,” Y/N pointed out, allowing a light laugh to pass her lips and Charlie sighed, nodding.
“I guess you’re right,” he agreed. “But you’ll call me if anything happens?”
“Of course I will, darling,” she agreed easily, leaning over their son to kiss him gently. “But nothing is going to happen. Me and James will be just fine. I’ll put him down for a nap and get on top of the washing while you’re gone - that’s it. Everything will be fine,” Y/N promised.
“I can do the washing,”
“I don’t mind doing it, love,” Y/N shook her head.
“But you’re sure everything will be okay? Because I can call John and tell him that I’m not going to help today because I was promised two weeks?” He offered and Y/N let out an adoring laugh, shaking her head.
“Everything will be perfectly fine, Charlie. I swear to you, okay? I’ll call you if something does happen - which it won’t - and I’ll keep my phone on me at all times and we will be fine” Y/N emphasised.
“I’m sorry… I just don’t want to leave you,” he admitted, staring down at his son. Y/N gently cupped her husbands face and smiled.
“You don’t need to be sorry, Charlie. You’re a wonderful dad and you just don’t want to leave your son so quickly after he was born. It’s perfectly natural,” Y/N assured him. “But you know you’ll regret not going with John,” she added and Charlie sighed, nodding, pressing a final kiss to the top of James’ head and passing the bundle back to Y/N.
“I love you,” he whispered, kissing her.
“I love you too,”
I hit 1K and am doing a themed blurb week to celebrate!!! Send in some requests for me to write!!!

* Charlie, his setting, and plot were all developed and conceived by myself and Bunny @gcrefxed / @killerxquccn. While we’re totally fine with others adding their characters into the setting / plot, it must be discussed first by either Bunny or myself. Theft will not be tolerated and WILL be called out.
* Unless it's something applicable to our muses collectively, Please reblog memes or posts in general from the source. I'm not a resource blog and if treated as one, especially by blogs who never interact, I will soft block.
* I will NOT interact with blogs that use youtubers, social media influencers, or anime / drawn characters for their Fcs. Nothing against you, it’s just not my thing.
* I will BLOCK personal blogs that reblog, like, or follow, as I like to keep interactions here between fellow rp mutuals. If you have an rp side-blog, let me know beforehand so I dont mistake you for a non -rp personal.
* I WILL NOT interact with minors. Given the content on this blog and the fact I’m an oldie, I just feel more comfortable writing with people of age, not to mention feel more comfortable exploring the darker / horror themes of this blog with adult mutuals.
* As stated I am MUTUALS ONLY, meaning i will only write with mutuals. While I do greatly appreciate people following and showing interest, if i dont follow back there’s genuinely no hard feelings. Its not a slight against you or in any way me thinking less of your character or taking some weird high and mighty attitude but : 1. I just get very overwhelmed with an overly busy dash and need to be a bit selective to prevent my anxiety from going nuts 2. At the time, I'm not seeing a way or know how our characters could interact. You’re more than welcome to unfollow. Alternatively please dont feel obligated to follow back if I follow first, aside from understanding this blogs content might not be for everyone, i don't believe in follow for follow. So if you're not genuinely interested in writing, I'd prefer a soft block. If you want to interact but don't follow me, chances are I’ll say no as I take following as a sign of interest. I may take a while to follow back as my notifications on here are the worst. If I don’t follow back within a weeks time, feel free to unfollow. .
T H R E A D S / P L O T T I N G
* I love plotting. If given my way I'd be plot exclusive but I know that's not everyone's cup of tea. If you're ever interested in plotting, know I am already onboard.
* If you want to turn a meme or ask into a thread, I’d prefer to be asked before hand. Simply because sometimes its nice to have memes just be stand alone things or for fun.
- Additionally I take the memes I send in to others as just memes for memes sake as well, so if you want a thread to continue off one you'll have to let me know , otherwise I'm clueless.
S H I P P I N G / D Y N A M I C S
As of 8/14/20 Charlie is no longer open to romantic ships with female muses specifically, and will ship only with Bunny’s female muses: Irene @gcrefxed and Sarah @killerxquccn , with her characters being detrimental in Charlie's story and to his character. Sarah specifically has always been the love of Charlie's life with the likelihood of anyone (beyond Irene) able to come close slim to none. This in no way means I will not interact with female muses or am being exclusionary from this point; I always want to explore the multitude of subtleties in dynamics between Charlie and muses of every gender - even female muses having feelings for charlie, flirting with him etc - but dynamics with those female leaning will not result in anything romantic. Male muses, however, are still open to the possibility of such a dynamic as that aspect to Charlies sexuality and character hasnt been delved into and I would find really interesting to explore. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! But please respect this decision and don't try to pressure or force me to change my mind as that will result in an automatic block. I ship based on chemistry between muses, but Im also very okay with pre-established dynamics (whether that be romantic, friends with benefits, enemies, platonic, familial, whatever!) Considering that can be a bit easier thread wise for some people instead of starting from the very beginning. As with most things, I like to talk through it beforehand. If you have anything in mind, you're more than welcome to approach me! But I also reserve the right to respectfully turn things down or offer alternate options if things don't mesh.
S M U T
While I, and my muse, are of age, I’m not entirely comfortable writing smut unless it’s with a mun 1.) I know well and 2.) Is of age. So for the most part any if it all suggestive scenes will lead to a fade to black, time skip, etc.
T R I G G E R S
My muse being horror related there may be some triggers here. There will be mentions, and maybe -though rarely- the occasional image, of : Blood, Violence , Murder , Serial Killers . Knives / Bladed weapons. I will ABSOLUTELY tag NSFW material [ with the tag nsfw > ] and triggers where applicable, though if you would like me to tag something specific to your needs or if there’s something I missed, don’t hesitate to let me know and I will do so right away!
M U N
* I write under the alias Nox! ( She/Her ) and I am of age
* i am a-okay with questions, especially about my muse! if you have any about anything at all i will be more than happy to answer them the best i can!
* Also totally fine with random IMs! despite being spacy as hell sometimes, I love talking to people. Even if we havent talked or interacted before, doors always open. I also have discord which I'll hand out to those I chat with and ask for it.
* I am very forgetful and easily distracted! Its the ADHD / Anxiety in me, added in with my irl stuff going on. Sometimes I forget to respond to IMs, but I promise it's not me ignoring you or a sign of disinterest [if we're mutuals, Im interested]. Dont be afraid to give me a poke if i take too long.
- Adding onto that I also have Depression . Which tends to put me in a bad headspace not only fairly often but fairly easily and makes me a bit tentative about trying to start things with others, based on bad past experience and my own mind being a bastard and thinking most people don't want to interact with me. So I promise, if we're mutuals, even if Im not sending things, I want to interact but probably being a clown and just afraid to while admiring you from afar until I can make a move. If you want to go ahead and go for it, I highly encourage it! Your best bet would be to approach me first.
* You can also find me on my other blogs:

As it is i have a hard time keeping muse, just the way i am sadly. i know this is something a lot of people, myself included, can find frustrating (especially when you’re really into a thread) but a fair amount of the time i may take a while to respond. as much as i love this, aside from being a hobby, i have a chronic illness that makes me exhausted most days or just not in the mood to write and not in any kind of state to type out a response you lovely people would deserve. though i will always try to quickly reply when i can.
M E M E S
Yes. please. send as many as you want, as often as you want. Even if we haven’t interacted, you’re free to send one my way; They can be a great place to start things off.
P O S T L E N G T H / F O R M A T T I N G
* I tend to use icons and small - but not super tiny- text, and usually some form of para, multi-para , or novella, but it really depends on my mood etc. Though all these things can vary : If you dont use icons, I can do iconless threads. If my formatting is too small, obnoxious, or hard to read, let me know! And I'll change to whatevers easiest to read. Want something short and sweet, mostly dialogue based? I can do that too. I go with the flow
* You don’t have to match my length in posts! sometimes i can write far too much when i get really into writing (and alternatively not write enough), so don’t feel obligated or pressured to follow suit by any means! whatever you are comfortable with is totally okay! it’s not a contest, this is all for fun.
G R A P H I C S / C R E D I T
* all icons and graphics are created by me unless stated otherwise
* icon psd by plutocommissions
* border by venuscomissions
Thank you sm for taking the time to read!

A HAPPY REFRAIN
Enchanté, madames et monsieurs!
So, here we are. Me, in the kitchen, surrounded by dried up flowers and water (ironically), and you, reading from your bedroom, public transportation, wherever you are. There is no more appropriate or important inauguration of my blog than writing about Singin’ in the Rain (1952).
Well, actually, that is debatable because I have an endless list of passions and favourites. Including, but not limited to: Star Wars, politics, the colour pink, flowers, writing, my dog, staring into the endless abyss, and debate, believe it or not! This is how I’ve chosen to begin because a random but specific occurrence of events has led me to this point in our universe. I figure the only prelude of a post about the greatest musical ever made should address the pure talent of Mr. Donald O’Connor when he fakes a broken nose in “Make ‘Em Laugh”.
Before I continue, I will say now that this post will be concerned with the bittersweet. “Welcome to my blog, I hope you leave saddened by what I’ve written!” In all seriousness, I find myself constantly seeking the bittersweet. I will not expound my somewhat self-deprecating theory, but I assure you that if you become a regular visitor, you will understand.
So, onto Cosmo! It’s like all Cosmos are a pleasure (i.e. Cosmo Brown, Cosmo from Fairy Odd Parents, Cosmo Kramer). The humour he possesses is so stereotypical of the time (ref. Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Three Stooges): falling, barely avoiding hits from several objects, and clumsy limbs. But, you really cannot help chuckling!??
If anyone’s mouth UNINTENTIONALLY forms into the ‘Vowel U’ and ‘Vowel O’ shape, please contact me to participate in a study!
I also would like to address the fact that Gene Kelly is one studly man.
He reminds me of a more exciting, more optimistic, less f-boy-type Dan from VEEP (please, I beg you to watch this show, if you have not already given it a chance. It is pure ingenuity).
Don’t lie and say there’s even a slight difference!
I figured this subject would be appropriate for this first post because it introduces a considerable theme in my life: nostalgia. As I grow older, becoming more independent of myself, traveling with friends, decorating my own apartment, paying my own bills, I am awarded with the pleasure of discovering and reconfiguring myself. And so far, what I have determined is that I am, have been, and always will be nostalgic of a time I have never lived in. A time I experience exclusively through a thorough appreciation for the television, music, film, politics, and way of life it produced. A secondhand experience. I can’t tell you exactly why I am this way. Sorry to disappoint. I do have some leading theories, however:
1) my grandma had as much of a role in raising me as my parents did,
2) I’m idealistic to a fault,
3) a form of rebellion, maybe?
All I know is the pure aesthetic and questions raised in the period between 1930-1970 is something I continue to gravitated towards. Why do you think I love La La Land (2016) so much? It’s just an affinity I have. For example, in my first year studying politics at a post-secondary level I immediately took interest in The Cold War (and The Arab Spring, but we’ll leave that out of this post because of it’s outlier status). It could be because JFK was a major player in that conflict, but that just leads me to question, “How did I begin admiring Kennedy?”
This is the bittersweet. For myself, it may be the most bittersweet. I love to spend my time immersed in this culture and it gives me great joy to get a glimpse of life in that era. But, it is a nostalgia that can bring you to tears. Why couldn’t I speak like I live atop a rainbow in the British Isles? Though, I know I am only shown directed and scripted portions of the era.
Don’t get me wrong, I do love my generation. People are more socially, politically, environmentally, and technologically aware than before. I do not think I could be able to live where there isn’t Google or Amazon.
There was this moment back in May, May the Fourth, to be exact. My best friend and I were caught in the rain downtown Toronto on our way to a Star Wars Day celebration. We were dressed in what should have been appropriate for the spring season, but the April showers had bled into its successor.
Singin’ in the Rain has been something we bond over, triggered when we first watched La La Land. Anyways, the umbrella she brought turned out to be broken, so, after our ritualistic cafe visit, we bought an obnoxious umbrella from the dollar store. Because if you’re dressed like Yoda, why not try to squeeze yourself under a plaid umbrella?
Walking down Chinatown, with sale-bin vinyls in hand, we sang “Singin’ in the Rain” in the rain, not caring which or how many passersby gave dirty looks will now always be a memory that comes to mind when re-watching the film. So, even though I could not have experienced buying a $0.40 movie ticket to see a film from the golden age in the golden age, I am incredibly grateful I have friends who appreciate it as much as I do, and whom I get to share my passions with (whether they like it or not).
I have no more I’d like to say on the topic, so I guess this is how we’ll part:
Moses supposes his toeses are roses / But Moses supposes erroneously / Moses, he knowses his toeses aren’t roses / As Moses supposes his toeses to be! / Moses supposes his toeses are roses / But Moses supposes erroneously / A mose is a mose / A rose is a rose / A toes is a toes / Hooptie dootie doodle!

Movies of 2016
(I’m posting this late but for archival purposes I’m putting it here)
Every January I do a list of all the movies I watched over the past year in chronological order and this,, as you can tell,, is that list. Each movie is rated out of 10 and rounded to the nearest whole number for simplicity and because I use the letterboxd app to log all my movies and it uses a 5 star system. These number ratings are meant to be as objective as possible, which means they’re judged on commonly agreed upon film conventions and what most critics and kinophiles would consider to be “good film,” as pretentious as that sounds. Really it just means I went with my gut feeling and then considered technical aspects and effectiveness on all of these. Paired with each are some thoughts to talk about what I liked or disliked, how it made me feel, etc. I’ll try to keep it short on as many as I can since there are so many. tl;dr: top 10 is at the bottom
Anomalisa – 7 – a predictably depressing Charlie Kaufman film about loneliness and being human—somewhat ironic considering it’s a stop motion film. Don’t let the puppets with 3d printed faces fool you; this is a very human movie with one of the most realistic sex scenes ever captured on film. Probably don’t see this with your mom like I did.
Inside Llewyn Davis – 8 – one of my favorite movies of the past few years and one of my top Coen bros movies. The charismatic but dickish performance by Oscar Isaac and beautiful folk soundtrack depicts a hard life for a musician in early 1960s New York that will make you feel better about yourself (unless you’re a musician).
Me, and Earl, and the Dying Girl – 8 – also one of my favorite movies of the past few years, this love letter to classic film by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is a beautiful story of a popular kid in high school who befriends a girl with terminal cancer. Essentially Perks of Being a Wallflower meets criterion collection.
Project X – 7 – one of my guilty pleasure movies. Lots of fun.
The Hateful Eight (70mm) – 6 – I got to see this in 70mm complete with preshow overture and intermission and it was an incredible experience. I loved the movie but it’s not Tarantino’s best by any stretch. Note the huge disparity in rating from last year when I gave it a 9.2. This film is not a 9.2.
The Forest – 3 – in this movie Natalie Dormer goes to the Japanese suicide forest to search for her sister who went missing. Suicide is a very apt theme here considering how heavily I considered ending my life during this movie. Truly awful.
Carol – 6 – one of those movies that I know is good but I just didn’t enjoy. It’s about Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett as they try to hide their forbidden romantic relationship in 1950s New York. Long, slow, but very pretty and touching, I’d recommend it if you like character driven stories—especially ones about LGBT issues because it’s very good in that regard.
Hail, Caesar – 7 – underrated mystery film by the Coen’s about old Hollywood and communists. More along the lines of the Big Lebowski than No Country For Old Men. Just a really fun movie with a great sense of world building that makes 1930s Hollywood really come alive.
Deadpool – 7 – pretty funny and exactly the kind of movie Ryan Reynolds and fans wanted. Probably the only good Marvel movie made by Fox.
The Witch – 8 – a visceral and disturbing film about a cursed life in 1600s New England, The Witch (stylized as The VVitch) is one of the best horror movies I’ve ever seen. Be warned though, it’s the definition of slow burn horror so you’ll probably dislike it if you’re used to modern horror films.
10 Cloverfield Lane – 7 – one of the big surprises of the year and also one of the most thrilling, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman both give excellent performances. It’s basically a bottle episode completely unrelated to the first film. People have criticized Winstead’s character for her actions at the end but it completes her character arc perfectly so it definitely works.
Room – 8 – beautiful film. Somewhat overrated.
Brooklyn – 8 – one of my favorites from 2015 and immensely enjoyable from start to finish. This story of an Irish girl moving to Brooklyn shows that the conflict doesn’t have to be high stakes for it to be compelling.
Batman v Superman – 4 – wow surprise surprise, Zack Snyder made another shit movie. Awful film full of clichés and nonsensical dialogue, bizarre editing, and the incredibly moronic decision to try and kickstart an entire cinematic universe in a dreadfully painful 2+ hour runtime. This movie sucks and DC needs to either hire some competent scriptwriters and directors or just give up already.
Zootopia – 7 – ah the quintessential furry movie 2016. I really enjoyed this and it has great rewatch value. One of the most beautifully animated movies of the year.
Midnight Special – 6 – I had no expectations for this movie and I was pleasantly surprised by it, although somewhat let down by the ending. It’s an interesting story about a kid with unknown supernatural powers being smuggled to a specific coordinates where he says something will happen. The mystery unfolds throughout the run time and there are some pretty cool scenes. Fun sci-fi to rent maybe.
Midnight in Paris – 7 – 1920s Paris is arguably one of the best eras to be alive in and Woody Allen captures the magic of the period well. As with most modern Woody Allen films it’s pretty cheesy—especially the modern day scenes—but the scenes that take place in the 1920s with F Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and Picasso are truly a delight. One of my favorite movies from 2011.
Captain America Civil War – 7 – not bad but much worse than Winter Soldier. It was enjoyable at least and miles ahead of Avengers 2.
Green Room – 8 – a disturbing, white-knuckle rollercoaster of a film that follows a punk band as they fight off a bar full of alt-righ—I mean neo-nazis. An absolute must-see.
The Nice Guys – 7 – fun from start to finish, Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe give two funny and over the top performances in this 1970s period film about two detectives who get caught up in a case that’s way over their heads. Definite recommendation. Crowe’s performance in the first third/half or so is very melodramatic and over the top cool-guy but I believe it was intended to be tongue in cheek so don’t let it throw you.
The Jungle Book – 6 – not bad.
Raiders of the Lost Ark – 9 – a near perfect movie and one of, if not the best action movie of all time.
x x x s u m m e r x x x
Make Happy – 8 – Bo Burnham tweeted about a special premiere screening of his new special back in March so I bought tickets and went with Andrew to see it. We went to the Largo in West Hollywood and were treated to a short comedy show and the grand premiere of Make Happy, Bo’s last one-man show for the foreseeable future. It was an incredible experience.
The World of Tomorrow – 8 – it’s only 16 minutes and it’s by Don Herzfeldt—what’s not to love? Get ready for an existential crisis.
The Conjuring 2 – 7 – pretty spooky in some parts with a cool little i spy game you can play with the name of the ghost demon lady. Not as good as the first.
Finding Dory – 7 – older Pixar films have a certain level of charm that all their films post-Toy Story 3 (barring Monsters University) don’t seem to have and this is no exception. It was very enjoyable but it just felt like it doesn’t have the magic that the old ones have.
The Shallows – 4 – the amount of praise this movie received was deadass baffling. This is one of the worst movies I’ve seen this year and I don’t see how so many people missed the cliché dialogue and plot, ridiculous shark cgi, exploitative ass shots, and absolutely insane and unrealistic attempts to kill the shark. Critics and audiences comparing this to Jaws is an insult to not only Spielberg, but also the art of filmmaking itself.
Frances Ha – 9 – one of my favorite movies of all time, this black and white indie film by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig is a cozy tale of solipsistic loneliness, friendship, and following your dreams. It’s depressing, but in a very relatable and reassuring way. Greta Gerwig as the New York dancer Frances is so believable that seeing her in other roles feels almost disingenuous. Honestly if you watch anything on this list you should watch this first, foremost and as soon as possible. It’s on netflix!
Mistress America – 7 – another one by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig and it was actually my introduction to their work. I loved this movie when I first saw it but it pales in comparison to Frances. Still a great movie with wonderful acting and snappy as hell dialogue. Fun fact: Noah Baumbach worked with Wes Anderson in the past and it shows here, especially in the dialogue.
The Neon Demon – 8 – one of the most polarizing films of the year but a definite return to form by the near infamous Nicolas Winding Refn. The success of the 2011 masterpiece Drive was not good for Refn’s ego apparently as he followed it up with the nauseatingly self-indulgent Only God Forgives. Thank goodness he was able to find a balance between pure art film and accessible indie film with the Neon Demon. It’s by no means very accessible but the acting, especially from the main girls and a sleazy Keanu Reeves, is great and the visuals are incredibly surreal and v e r y v e r y n e o n . Recommend if you like artsy films with lots of sex and blood.
Back to the Future – 10 – a textbook example of what a perfect movie looks like.
It Follows – 8 – nothing but love for this creepy and atmospheric 2015 horror/suspense film about the end of childhood and the impending dread of adulthood. Really it’s about a supernatural shape shifting thing with its “rule” being that acts like an std being passed down through sexual partners. If the thing catches you, it then goes after the previous person in the chain and so on, so the only way to save yourself is to pass it on or run endlessly in futility. Please do see this it’s great.
The Secret Life of Pets – 6 – a disappointment but Louis CK as a dog was fun to see.
Hush – 5 – not very good Netflix horror movie about a guy terrorizing a deaf lady at her home in the woods for some reason.
Snatch – 6 – I suppose if I were more familiar with Guy Ritchie’s work I would’ve enjoyed it more but it looks like it was shot by a Tarantino wannabe edgelord and edited in windows moviemaker. Still entertaining though.
Horace and Pete – 10 – Horace and Pete is a dramedy web series multi-camera sitcom written, directed, and produced by Louis CK and it’s the single best serial program I’ve ever seen. This is a true masterpiece in every sense and the writing and acting is some of the best in a serial program. It was so good that I actually could not enjoy anything else for days after because everything paled in comparison. For example, I watched Stranger Things the day after I finished this and I had to stop watching three episodes in because it was completely and utterly awful compared to Horace and Pete. The quality of writing is unbelievable and I laughed and cried at many many points. Louis CK, Steve Buscemi, Edie Falco, and Alan Alda, bring career defining performances to the small screen and I cannot wait to watch it again—although I’m not sure I’m prepared for it.
Breathless (1960) – 7 – one of the most defining films of the French New Wave, this film by Jean Luc-Godard is a love story shot in some of the most unconventional ways I’ve seen in a film. It’s not surreal or weird but it certainly is interesting. Worth a watch if you like the cinematography of Wes Anderson, Woody Allen, or Louis CK—although it’s a much more saturated French New Wave style since all those styles are derivative of this. Has some of the most intriguing and innovative tracking/dolly shots I’ve ever seen. In fact, at one point two characters are walking down the street but they couldn’t afford a dolly for the tracking shot, so they had the cameraman sit in a wheelchair and film while someone pulled him backwards to make the shot. Really that’s what French New Wave is all about: innovating and using filmmaking techniques that were unprecedented at the time.
Star Trek Beyond – 6 – a really fun return to the franchise that actually felt somewhat like a Star Trek film—unlike that last one. It’s still just an action movie franchise now but it’s just a real good time.
Lights Out – 3 – again, the praise this film received was COMPLETELY unwarranted and totally baffling. This movie blows and is so saturated with clichés that I can’t imagine liking this film. don’t waste ur time.
Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates – 5 – actually hilarious movie. Really dumb but so goddamn funny. Zach Efron and Adam Devine are a great duo. Has arguably the best exchange about fisting in the history of film.
Café Society – 6 – a pretty good modern Woody Allen film. Much better than his last two, Irrational Man and Magic in the Moonlight. It’s nice to see a film from Woody Allen that isn’t about a much older man falling in love with a much younger woman.
Suicide Squad – 2 – “roses are red/there is no god/my favorite movie?/suicide squad.” – Gideon Ondap deadass one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I wrote a 10 page essay on this after it came out but basically the editing is jarring enough to induce brain trauma, the acting is atrocious, and the script is objectively bad. A complete and utter failure of a film. The name is a warning.
The Room – 1 – another one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen yet 1000x more enjoyable than Suicide Squad. Tommy Wisseau is a genius and this is his magnum opus. Required viewing. Also I must say that a Suicide Squad/The Room double feature makes for one of the funniest nights of life.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World – 8 – honestly one of my favorite movies. A super well done adaptation directed by Edgar Wright, this film is able to stand independently next to the already spectacular Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series. The music is incredible. It never gets old.
x x x c o l l e g e x x x
Sausage Party – 5 – obscene, racist, vulgar, and dumb as hell with a giant food orgy at one point. Still laughed at much of it.
Captain Fantastic – 8 – a dad raising his kids to survive in the wilderness of Washington must bring them into society to attend their dead mother’s funeral. A big surprise and one of the most enjoyable movies I saw this year.
Don’t Think Twice – 8 – Mike Birbiglia has always been one of my favorite comedians because his stories were so heartwarming, wholesome, and packed to the brim with jokes that would reward you on multiple viewings or listens. Don’t Think Twice is Mike’s second movie I believe, and it’s about an improv group in Brooklyn having fun doing their craft while trying to make a life for themselves. When you’re a comedian/improviser,, your friends are too, but if one of you actually gets a big break then it’s that person’s break and no one else’s. It causes a lot of tension between performers because even though they’re all friends, they’re still actively competing in a highly sought after profession. Judd Apatow came out after he saw the movie and said how accurately it depicts the life of comedy performers. It’s a really depressing (in a relatable way) and realistic take on the competitive world of improv and deals with friendship, comedy, and how cruel life can really be. Beautiful movie.
American Beauty – 8 – really did not like this the first time but warmed up to it on the second viewing and it really shines despite many dated aspects.
Antz – 6 – woody allen as a ant oy vey
Back to the Future II – 5 – pretty bad sequel until he goes back to 1955. Worse than the third tbh
Everybody Wants Some!! – 7 – even after the abortion that was Boyhood I didn’t give up on Richard Linklater and I’m glad I didn’t. This spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused (but in the 80s this time!) was a ton of fun.
Clapping for the Wrong Reasons – 8 – this short film written by Donald Glover and directed by Hiro Murai is about a surreal day in the life of The Boy, a character Donald Glover created as the speaker of his Because the Internet album (his magnum opus imo). Hot take: Chance v Bino push up contest contender for best film scene ever.
Kubo and the Two Strings – 7 – the most beautiful disappointment of the year. The incredible stop motion animation is unfortunately much more enjoyable than the underwhelming story. Not as good as Coraline.
Hell or High Water – 8 – the director of photography from Sicario returns for this modern western about two brothers who rob the banks that screwed over their mother. Great performances from Jeff Bridges, Ben Foster, and Chris Pine.
Don’t Breathe – 7 – this horror film about three thieves who break into an old blind man’s house borders on exploitation film towards the end. Not that bad.
Blair Witch – 6 – not as bad as everyone said it was. It’s a soft reboot of 99’s Blair Witch Project but with a modern horror twist—which means it relies mainly on jump scares and unnecessary use of found footage tropes rather than atmosphere building and genuine terror. I still thoroughly enjoyed it and thought the last 15 minutes or so were really spooky. The creature design was really great and the way time moved was an interesting horror device. If you liked the first one but were bored by it then you’ll probably like this one because it moves a bit faster although you might be bored by it too. Oh but side note: that drone scene was fucking stupid.
Over The Garden Wall – 10 – this 10 episode cartoon network animated miniseries aired in the fall of 2014 and follows two boys as they wander through the woods to find their way back home. It stars Elijah Wood, Christopher Lloyd, Melanie Lynskey, John Cleese, Tom Lennon, and Tim Curry among others. The story itself is inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Inferno and the music is inspired by early 20th century Americana folk music. It’s literally the single most charming thing I’ve ever seen and it’s an absolute MUST SEE.
x x x s e p 1 5 – n o v 6 x x x
Doctor Strange – 7 – not much to say about this one but I liked it. The visuals were top notch and although Dr Strange is basically just Tony Stark pt 2, it makes sense considering how much lesser of a role Stark will play in later movies. I’m really excited for the new Thor movie now.
The Purge Election Year – 4 – each Purge movie is better than the last and this third installment is still a 4. That’s pretty much all there is to say. There are some legitimately hilarious parts in this though—all unintentional.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? – 7 – another silly Coen film and one of their most accessible. Good film based on the Odyssey.
Arrival – 9 – Dennis Villeneuve is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors after last year’s Sicario and now 2016’s Arrival. This is a film about humanity, the complete frivolity of our problems, and how staying divided will be our undoing. The cinematography is breathtaking, the score is great (much of it follows the circle of 5ths, which will make sense after watching), the acting is good, and the film just has a beautiful sense of scope to it. I encourage you to watch this and DON’T WATCH ANY TRAILERS OR READ ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I assure you; you’ll want to go into this as blind as possible (and you should never watch trailers anyway they literally ruin films). In Trump’s America this movie is even more important so please I urge you to watch this.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – 5 – the Phantom Menace of the Harry Potter universe, Fantastic Beasts has so much exposition and forced world building that anyone who hasn’t seen the first 8 hp films will probably have a tough time figuring out what’s going on. The opening sequence is literally just a montage of newspaper headlines saying how terrible this dark wizard is, which was done in harry potter but over the span of roughly 3 movies rather than 1 minute. Overall positives: the creature designs were fun, Jacob was rad, the humor was effective, the cgi wasn’t /that/ bad, newt’s hair was wavy af (and he was a hufflepuff, which I appreciate), and the costumes may get an Oscar nomination. As for the cons: so much panning, craning, and tracking that I could barely see what was going on due to low framerate, the first 10-15 minutes are a suicide squad level editing disaster, the pacing was weird at times, they revealed who the main antagonist was in his actual first scene, too many plotlines interweaved, inexcusably bad framing in a few shots, and the ending was a little bit Chekhov’s gun but was pretty much deus ex machina. This just didn’t feel as magical as the harry potter films and, like star wars 7, it feels like a failed attempt to recapture what made people love the franchise in the first place. It was a very flawed film but I still enjoyed it and will watch it again.
Moana – 6 – VERY overrated but still good. How a lot of people felt about Frozen is how I feel about this movie. The animation was incredible, the voice acting was great, the songs were good (although not nearly as catchy or memorable as Frozen, save for Shiny) and it ends up being another Tangled, a movie I enjoyed but will forget about very soon—hell I’ve already forgotten about it. Just think about how long Frozen was a thing. People were talking about Frozen for months after and I haven’t seen anyone mention Moana since its opening weekend. Overall a huge disappointment. Zootopia was the far superior animated feature this year.
The Handmaiden – 8 – my first Park Chan-wook film and I loved it ! This film is fucking enigma for the first half and then as soon as one detail is revealed it suddenly opens up and becomes an incredible psychological thriller. I honestly was not enjoying this film for the first act or so because of how seemingly meaningless it was but it really shaped up to be one of my favorites of the year. Never before have I experienced a film that made me 180 on opinion during the course of its runtime. Be warned: don’t see this with your parents or anyone you would feel awkward watching porn with because this shit is basically pornography at MANY points during the film. I don’t know if my friend and his brother have forgiven me yet.
Unedited Footage of a Bear – 8 – there’s a tl;dr at the bottom of this one because it’s a little long and expository. I was watching an idubbbz video (https://youtu.be/5Bs45yITIt0) back in November and many criticized how unfunny and bizarre it was compared to his other content. People started to speculate that he was doing a metafictional series about his channel along the lines of alantutorial (https://www.youtube.com/user/alantutorial), a channel in which performance artist Alan Resnick plays a fictionalized version of himself who is depicted as a mentally ill young man obsessed with making tutorial videos. This alantutorial series is a commentary on poorly made tutorial videos that flood youtube, as well as social media in general and the overwhelming desire for likes, favorites, going viral, etc. after discovering Alan Resnick and watching all his videos I started to seek out his other content and I found this short film that aired as part of Adult Swim’s infomercial slot at 4 a.m. This may sound familiar to some as the timeslot for Too Many Cooks, which went viral. This short film, titled Unedited Footage of a Bear, can be watched here: https://youtu.be/2gMjJNGg9Z8 and parodies those commercials you’ll often see on tv about drugs that are peddled to mentally ill people without proper testing. This film depicts addiction as a force that can and will ruin your life, your family’s life, and will kill you if left unchecked. There’s an explanation you can watch here: https://youtu.be/_2e5ia9j0TA that explains it really well and is worth the watch. tl;dr: cool 10-minute short horror film about addiction by performance artist Alan Resnick – check it out.
Twin Peaks (Pilot) – 8 – it was good
This House Has People In It – 8 – hey look another Alan Resnick short film. you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/x-pj8OtyO2I and the attempted explanation is here: https://youtu.be/mjBTAnCUbZc because this one is pretty complicated compared to footage of a bear. also worth the watch simply for the L O R E
No Country For Old Men – 10 – one of the best movies of this century hands down. not sure if I rate it quite as high as There Will Be Blood though, which came out the same year. The Coen’s crowning achievement (although you could argue that title belongs to The Big Lebowski for reasons)
Moonlight – 9 – a very heavy coming of age film about a young boy living in the south who attempts to find himself while growing up in an incredibly unforgiving environment. beautiful film and I’m excited to see it again. very very important film for LGBT issues.
Nocturnal Animals – 8 – one of the biggest surprises this year. I LOVED this movie and it stayed with me for days. as soon as it started I made a mental note that I’d have to really pay attention to everything because I figured it would be heavy with metaphor and symbolism and boi was I right about that. Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal give great performances and I honestly can’t tell you the last time I got so emotionally invested in a film. people have criticized Adams’ performance as melodramatic and cold, which is the point because she’s not supposed to be likeable. the narrative structure is refreshing and fun to piece together and the visuals were pretty alright. my favorite part of this movie was piecing together all the metaphors (of which there are many) and figuring out what the events of the Nocturnal Animals manuscript (in the film) means for the characters. It’s been a very polarizing film apparently, which surprised me since it doesn’t really try to be anything more than it is. It definitely rewards close observation but I can’t guarantee everyone will like this one. I won’t say more because going into it blind is the best way but I do recommend it. Tense, emotional, gripping, funny. It’s good.
x x x w i n t e r x x x
Star Wars Rogue One – 8 – I really enjoyed this. I probably don’t need to say much because it’s star wars but this was the best star wars film since Empire Strikes Back in my opinion (although episode III wasn’t that bad). the characters were a little flat, some of the humor was out of place, and the first 30 minutes had bad pacing, but overall it was great. the action in this one was insane and I’m so happy that we finally got to see a proper space battle (and holy shit is it a good one). this has one of my favorite moments of the entire series and it actually feels like a star wars movie unlike episode VII.
La La Land – 10 – I’m at a loss for words honestly. This movie is so fucking good. The soundtrack is incredible, the choreography is awesome, the cinematography is BEAUTIFUL, and the performances are wonderful. I could keep thinking of adjectives or I could just tell you to go see this movie as soon as you can. Best movie of the year hands down. LA has never looked so fucking good OH MAN please go see this movie you’ll surely regret it if you don’t. OH and we went to see this in the Vista Theater in LA, which was a once in a lifetime experience. See this in the most old-Hollywood theater you can because it actually improves it if that’s possible. Now there are some flaws, mainly in third act pacing, but it’s so enjoyable that it doesn’t matter.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – 10 – it’s a classic and could be considered a perfect film. not much to say but it’s definitely one of my favorites of all time. never gets old.
Home Alone – 8 – this was the first time I watched Home Alone and I liked it.
Assassin’s Creed – 6 – the neckbeard-y guy doing anime runs up and down the stairs of the theatre behind us really set the tone for this movie. I didn’t hate it but it was pretty dreary and I feel like almost nothing happened. I don’t think it translates to the screen well but it did capture the feel of the games, or at least the first one. Let’s just say after seeing this I went on a mission to watch at least one more movie so it wouldn’t be my last of the year.
Swiss Army Man – 7 – the praise for this movie was a bit unwarranted. It’s really silly and touching but it wasn’t the modern masterpiece that everyone was saying it was. maybe I missed something but the corpse of Daniel Radcliffe farting is only tolerable and funny for so long. I will say that this is one of the most unique movies I’ve ever seen, so I’ll give it props for that, and the soundtrack was actually incredible. I enjoyed it very much and need to watch it again but it was alright.
Come Together – 8 – an H&M short film by Wes Anderson that can be watched here: https://youtu.be/VDinoNRC49c . It was cute and I guess it’ll hold me over until Isle of Dogs, which comes out in 2018 (no it won’t)
The Lobster – 8 – this absurd commentary on relationships and their influence on society is just bizarre and has a wonderfully dry performance from Colin Farrell and, well, every other actor too. this film is just crazy and I really need to watch it again. Expect it to be on my next year’s list as well. TOP TEN RELEASED IN 2016 xxx 10 – The Nice Guys
9 – Hell or High Water
8 – The Handmaiden
7 – Don’t Think Twice
6 – The Witch
5 – Moonlight
4 – Nocturnal Animals
3 – Green Room
2 – Arrival
1 – La La Land honorable mentions: Captain Fantastic, Horace and Pete, The Neon Demon, Make Happy recommendations: Frances Ha, Mistress America, Over the Garden Wall, The World of Tomorrow, Midnight in Paris, Me, and Earl, and the Dying Girl, The Lobster and finally the award for worst movie of the year goes to ,,,,, SUICIDE SQUAD duh. In 2016 I watched 77 movies, which is terrible considering I watched 124 last year and 92 in 2014. That gap from September to November really killed me in that regard and hopefully it won’t happen again or for as long next time. Overall this was actually a pretty weak year for movies it seems. Looking at my top of the year list, it looks significantly weaker than last year’s which had The Revenant, It Follows, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Sicario, and Brooklyn. If anyone has questions or suggestions about anything I’d love to have a discussion so feel free. Here’s to another year of great movies. also if you’d like to follow me on twitter @thejoeydavis please do because I’m a huge slut for likes and I desperately want and need your approval. thanks for reading
