re: drabbles: i would be interested to see any kind of take on what life in the PCA is like; the EKDROMOI and HC/LC-HM duos in particular always seemed like funny Just Guys Being Dudes dynamics
OH I LOVE IDEAS LIKE THESE... i ended up just going on a ramble dear god... uh i hope you enjoy! a bit of worldbuilding for PCA and RLF (with a surprise Flatwell mention!)
Thanks for the prompt!
When Erik had been handed his posting for Rubicon-3 (or "ISB2262" as most within the UEG knew it), his first dismayed thought had been: i've hit a dead-end in my career.
See, the PCA were not viewed favourably within the UEG's pilot corps for a multitude of reasons, ranging from their infamous reputation as "space cops" to the fact that their direct chain of command was an actual, literal AI called The System, and whom many within the PCA spoke of as if she was their divine god that had descended from heaven itself to guide them.
Also, there were no glorious battles with the PCA, no chances for winning spoils of war during inter-corporate conflicts or achieving swift promotions by looking good at the right moment. All you did in the PCA was sit on some quarantined rock - normally out in the middle of bumfuck nowhere - and weren't allowed to take souviners or salvage anything profitable from the surface. It was basically guard duty but for years.
At least with guard duty on solar colonies you had some form of civilisation to visit. On Rubicon-3? Civilisation had been razed into nothing but ashes after that catastrophic industrial accident almost fifty years ago, and the remanents were just a ragtag group of stubborn colonists who refused to relocate because this is our home! Nevermind that their home was basically a hole in the ground full of contaminated soil.
Needless to say, Erik's expectations had been low when he reported to the PCA's main base on Rubicon-3. The planet had looked ugly when he came in, the atmosphere riddled with enough chunked up asteroids to make navigating the mess an absolute nightmare for the autopilot and what little surface he glimpsed looking grey and lifeless. The oceans looked good, at least, but Erik didn't have gills, and he doubted he'd be spending any time on their blasted-out beach resorts.
His expectations had been this: he'll sit in whatever passed as their guard room watching the live feed from their defence satellites, bored out of his mind except for moments of fleeting excitement when some wildcat miner came barrelling towards the planet in delusional hopes of striking it big with a Coral deposit. The nights would be long, the days even longer, and he'll be cold, miserable and wondering when he'd be posted out so his career could start again.
Instead, reality had been this: piloting the most advanced MT he'd ever sat in, wielding the most powerful weapons he'd ever laid hands on... yet trapped in an endless struggle against ye olde BASHO ACs on a near regular basis like he was in Hell and this was the ordeal he was condemned to endure for the rest of his afterlife.
The Rubiconian Liberation Front. Erik had heard of them back on Earth when he was in the UEG's main pilot corps, but no one had thought them as any serious threat. Just a group of colonists who had hijacked a construction MT or two and occasionally threw rocks through the PCA's figurative windows. They weren't a real threat. They were just civilians with guns. They'd be scared off easily just by shooting a few warning shots their way.
Wrong.
They were like rabid racoons that refused to leave the PCA's dumpsters. Almost every night, Erik and his squad would be crashed out when the perimetres alarms would trip, and almost every night he'd be chasing after RLF ACs and MTs running off with whatever the hell they could carry. Telephone poles. Copper wires. Vehicles like jeeps or vans. One of them had ran off with a fucking HVAC system once and to date Erik was still baffled about that.
But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was him.
Middle fucking Flatwell.
The RLF leadership was a bit strange, but every PCA pilot knew of Flatwell. He was a Gen Three and had been part of the Rubiconian militia as a qualified, albeit green, AC pilot when the Fires had hit Rubicon. Guy was likely pushing seventy and still piloted rings around the PCA like he was bioengineered in some fucking lab somewhere to be the bane of their existence.
The System - their chain of command, their AI - knew everything it could dig up about Flatwell. His AC schematics, his habits, his history, his fighting profile and even including some interesting yet bizarre factoids like 'has a legitimate Earth citizenship due to successful seduction of a high-ranking Arquebus executive' and 'suspected illicit affair with an intelligence officer within Arquebus HQ', which meant not only was Flatwell a demon in the AC, he was a demon under the sheets too, forbidden knowledge that Erik could've gone without knowing.
But forbidden knowledge or not, the simple fact was: Flatwell was a damn good pilot, and most of the PCA pilots were just average.
In high-tech MTs and using even higher tech weaponry, sure, but still average. But, when Erik had been new to the post, had been dazzled by these amazing MTs and beautiful plasma weapons, he'd charged headfirst into a fight against Flatwell without hesitation, ignoring The System's soft bleat for him to use caution.
Needless to say, Erik had totalled that shiny MT and ended up ejecting before even a full thirty seconds had passed. Guy was fast.
Fortunately, however, the PCA were a lot more forgiving when it came to totalled MTs. Back in the UEG that would've come straight out of Erik's paycheck, as all repair bills did (he was still paying off his previous repairs... just thirty more years and he'd be debt free!) - but the PCA had brushed it off. Turned out they had a pretty sweet fabrication system and could churn out MTs in the hundreds within hours. Where they got the raw materials for that, Erik wasn't so sure... but the PCA were a branch of the UEG, so it was probably legitimate and not at all illegal or suspicious.
(One of the first rules you learn in the PCA: do not think too deeply about how it functions for legal reasons)
But, while the posting was leagues more exciting than he had initially believed, and incredibly more dangerous, his initial dismayed thought still held true: it was a career killer, because here was another, hidden rule he hadn't known until his boots were firmly on Rubicon-3 and his transporter was flying away from the planet:
Once you're on Rubicon-3, you die on Rubicon-3. No transfers, to retiring, no early-release. The PCA's mission was lifelong and no amount of bellyaching or protesting wold change that. Erik had been sprinted through the five stages of grief before he accepted his grim fate.
Maybe he had died on the way here, he had thought. Maybe this was his punishment for contributing directly to the voracious war machine that was the UEG... how many unionised workers had he killed over the years? How many colonies had he visited to stomp down on burgeoning independent movements so corporations didn't lose a source of revenue? How many had he stomped down on, just for his own continued comfort within the callous galaxy that humanity had made for itself?
Rubicon. It really made you think about these things. Erik slowly began to understand why the PCA's relationship with the RLF was how it was. Yeah, they crashed out every night, and yeah, sometimes Flatwell was there waiting for them, but most times...
Erik would crash out with his squad and only chase the thieving RLF a few miles before breaking off pursuit. He told himself there was no point. What they stole could easily be replaced within a few days. It wasn't as if they were stealing weapons or whatever. If they wanted a fucking HVAC system or a bunch of telecommunication wiring that badly, then they could have it. No skin of Erik's nose, and the PCA didn't bill him for failure to retrieve stolen goods.
He didn't sympathise with them, and the RLF certainly didn't sympathise with the PCA. They killed a lot of each other over the years Erik had been posted here, and Flatwell was particularly merciless. But.
They were both stuck on this planet, either willfully or not. They were both on Rubicon-3 for the long haul, and one way or another, they were gonna share the same fate: they were going to die here, eventually.
They were never going to leave this razed shithole.
#armored core#armored core 6#fanfic#middle flatwell#some worldbuilding stuff with pca and rubicon#thank you for the prompt!#it was very fun :)

Why isn’t it just common practice to generate home electricity using everyday activities? (Chatting with architect sister who designs LEED/passive-powered homes)
- mini hydroelectric turbines in sink, washing machine and dishwasher outflows. These are at consumer level pricing now and plenty of new homes build them right in
- generate power via in-home treadmills, exercycles & ellipticals - we’ve been hooking up bikes to power belts since the Victorian era.
- solar panels on the outsides of blinds / standard practice on rooftops and exposed walls
- attractive micro wind turbines as garden ornaments
- hydroelectric turbines in garden water features and garden hose attachments
- mini wind turbines built into home HVAC systems: vacuum the living room, charge the home battery while you’re at it.
Small increments, but each one adds up. And as my sister noted, most of these can be retrofitted quite simply into existing structures.

What You Should Know About Shipping Container Homes
Before purchasing a shipping container house, you must be aware of various factors. Among them are structural concerns, insulation, modifications, expenses, and other factors. Shipping container homes are an excellent method to repurpose used shipping containers. They may be rather costly to build.
There are several things you should know if you want to create a shipping container house. Some of the most prevalent issues are structural. It is also critical to locate a reputable contractor to assist with the building.
The majority of shipping containers are composed of steel, which is a long-lasting material. It does, however, expand less than wood. That is, it does not have the same structural stability as wood. Steel, fortunately, is readily mended and patched.
Your local municipal planning agency may offer information about container dwellings depending on where you reside. This information might help you assess whether you can build a container house.
Building codes for container dwellings are still required in many areas. This can make building one difficult. You'll also need to choose a good place for your container house.
Insulation materials for shipping container homes come in a variety of styles. It is critical to select the ideal one for your requirements. This is affected by the climate and location.
If you reside in a hot environment, for example, you should invest in a heated insulating material. However, if you live in a chilly climate, you may want a more relaxed style. The materials you select will also differ based on the sort of container you have. It is possible that you may need to insulate both the inside and outside.
Spray foam is the most often used material for this purpose. Although it is pricey, it offers enough insulation. It not only acts as a vapour barrier, but it also prevents condensation from developing.
Insulation panels are another common choice. These are lightweight and simple to install. They may be sculpted and sliced. You will, however, need to make some room inside the walls for them. Another possibility is closed-cell spray insulation. Spray foam is more costly than other types of insulation. Nonetheless, it is a good choice for humid areas.
Many individuals have started converting cargo containers into houses and workplaces. These alterations are frequently tasteful and appealing. They provide individuals with a secure, low-cost option to live in areas where there is insufficient infrastructure to sustain traditional dwellings.
Modifications might range from constructing a new roof to installing windows. Building a container home might take several weeks or months. To begin, you must secure permission from your local government. This is a legal obligation that will save you money and time.
Shipping containers may also be used to create schools and first-aid facilities. These are ideal for youngsters who require temporary accommodations. More individuals are swapping cargo containers as the economy improves and the building sector expands. They are less costly and easier to install than standard building materials.
Add windows, doors, HVAC systems, and solar panels to personalize your container. These changes can drastically alter the look of your cargo container. You may also cut energy use by adding insulation.
If you want to save money on your home, shipping container homes are a good solution. They may be made in a variety of forms, sizes, and patterns. However, they are only sometimes inexpensive. Prices vary depending on the size, style, and location of the home.
If you want to create your own shipping container home, you must prepare ahead of time. Your local government will need you to get a building permit. A contractor will also be required to create the rooftop. This will necessitate the installation of power and other services.
You will also need to install windows and doors. Your container house will sparkle with a few tiny, high-quality touches. You may be able to create a small shipping container home for as low as $20,000, depending on your budget and the amount of work you want to perform. A more sophisticated home, on the other hand, may necessitate the hiring of a professional contractor.

How To Calculate Air Conditioner Size For Your House?
Each home is unique, and finding the correct air conditioner size is very important. The size of your air conditioner will be determined by different criteria other than just the size of your home. The requirements for AC Replacement or air conditioner repair in Red Bluff, CA, will be different from that in Paradise. These criteria include your roof type, ceiling height, amount of windows, insulation type, and wall heat transmission, among others.
Typically, the size suggested in the manufacturer's specifications does not take these aspects into account, so it can be wrong. This can create a mess during installation, resulting in system damage.
What Should Be the Size of My AC?
Air conditioner sizes do not refer to the actual dimensions of your unit. An AC unit's size is measured in tonnes, which indicates how much heat it can remove in an hour. For example, A typical AC unit weighs one tonne and cools 12000 BTU every hour (BTU is a unit of measurement for heat). The amount of BTUs required to cool a living room or home office with a surface size of 100-300 square feet is around 5000-6000 BTUs. So you should consider the size of your AC in tonnes before making a purchase.
Why Does the AC Size Matter?
Because size counts, a properly sized air conditioner will run a complete cycle and keep your home cooler for a longer time with air conditioner service in Paradise, CA. If your air conditioner is too small in size, it will have to run constantly to keep your home cool enough throughout the summer. As a result of this, your power expenses will rise.
When an air conditioner is very large, it cools the space rapidly, which requires it to operate for an extremely brief time. When this happens, the unit is unable to adequately remove humidity from the air, which can lead to mold and fungal issues. In such instances, frequent on-off cycling will also wear down your air conditioner faster.
How Can You Measure the AC Size Which Is Best for You?
To figure out what size of an air conditioner you will need for a room, multiply the room's length by its breadth. Then again, multiply it by 25 BTU to achieve a sufficient amount of cooling for the space in all weather conditions. For instance, a 15 feet long and 12 feet broad room is 180 square feet. Now multiply 180 by 25 BTU per square foot to obtain 4500 BTU, which is the air conditioner's minimum cooling capability. In this way, you can calculate the size of an AC to get maximum cooling and efficiency.
AC Size Calculator Chart
Various online calculators and charts are available to help you find the right size of AC that meets all your cooling needs.

Understanding the Real Difference Between Hard and Soft Facilities Management
The nature of facilities and property management is dynamic and ever-changing. Between meeting safety regulations and ensuring systems are functioning at an optimum level, managing a facility is no easy feat. Not to mention that every building, room, and worksite has its own character, quarks, and unique needs.
Whether you’re new to facilities management or a seasoned pro, you probably know that most maintenance functions can be broken down into two categories: Hard and Soft facilities management.
Let’s review the differences between the two and why balancing both is essential to your organization’s operations.
What is Hard Facilities Management (FM)?
Hard FM services are the “core services” in regards to the physical assets connected to a facility. Typically, these are the functions and services that are “non-negotiable” as they can have a significant impact on a property’s structural integrity, its largest investments, and the safety and welfare of employees and visitors.
Some examples include:
Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning/Cooling (HVAC)
Utility Equipment Maintenance
Electrical
Plumbing
Fire Safety Systems
Lighting
Mechanical
Building Maintenance
Generator Maintenance
What is Soft Facilities Management (FM)?
Soft FM, on the other hand, is considered to be more for general well-being and comfort, rather than structural integrity. These are the services that improve a building’s security and the comfortability of employees, guests, and customers.
As such, these services can be deemed as “non-essential”. But let’s be honest–in today’s environment, these “non-essential” services are actually quite vital because of the experience they create for employees and customers. This is important because the experience of a facility can impact employees, visitors, shoppers and their willingness to advocate for a company or store. When Soft FM functions are cared for, a facility fosters a good environment which improves employee retention as well as customer loyalty.
Some examples include:
Landscaping & Snow Removal
Cleaning & Janitorial
Waste Management & Trash
Biohazard
Parking Lot & Road Maintenance (Street Sweeping)
Power Washing
Locksmith
Pest Control
Security
Porter Services
Restaurant Equipment Cleaning
Duct Cleaning
Window Cleaning
COVID Cleaning
Other Key Facilities Management Functions
Because facilities management is such a diverse and multifaceted job function, there are many projects that fall outside of the two distinctions above. Two key areas are Building and Construction as well as Energy and Environmental projects.
Building and Construction services are essential to the functional and structural aspects of the facility. These services can affect the design, layout, and function of the facility. While not considered directly “Hard FM,” they often accompany many of the functions of Hard FM.
Some examples include:
Remodeling
Renovation
Carpentry
Roofing
Handyman
Signage
Doors & Roll Up Gates
Glass installation
Board-ups
Energy and Environmental services are those that promote sustainability within a facility and the conservation of the space and resources that are used each and every day.
Similar to Soft FM, these functions are deemed “non-essential” but by today’s standards are modern convenience functions that today’s employees and customers come to expect.
Some examples include:
Energy Management
LED conversions
EV Chargers
Energy Storage Systems
Recycling Programs
Solar
Building Synergy in Facilities Management
Both Hard and Soft facilities management services are integral to ensuring a safe and well-functioning facility. While they address specific areas and needs of a facility, they work cohesively to deliver an experience that employees, guests, and customers can safely enjoy.

Energy-Efficient Furnace Options for Pinellas Park Residents
As winter approaches, residents of Pinellas Park, FL, are reminded of the importance of having a reliable and energy-efficient furnace. With rising energy costs and growing environmental concerns, choosing the right furnace can significantly impact both your utility bills and your carbon footprint. In this article, we’ll explore some of the best energy-efficient furnace options available to Pinellas Park residents.
Understanding Energy Efficiency Ratings
Before diving into specific furnace models, it’s crucial to understand energy efficiency ratings. The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is the standard measurement for furnace efficiency. The AFUE percentage indicates how much of the energy consumed by the furnace is converted into heat. For example, a furnace with an AFUE rating of 90% means 90% of the energy is used for heating, while the remaining 10% is lost.
When shopping for a new furnace, look for models with an AFUE rating of 90% or higher to ensure energy efficiency.
Top Energy-Efficient Furnace Options
1. Condensing Gas Furnaces
Condensing gas furnaces are among the most efficient options available. They use two heat exchangers to extract maximum heat from the fuel they consume. These furnaces can have AFUE ratings of 90% to 98%. Not only do they provide consistent heating, but they also produce less carbon dioxide, making them an environmentally friendly choice.
2. Electric Furnaces
Electric furnaces are another great option for Pinellas Park residents. They can be particularly energy-efficient if paired with a smart thermostat. Electric furnaces do not produce emissions on-site and can be powered by renewable energy sources, such as solar panels. When properly sized and installed, electric furnaces can achieve high energy efficiency.
3. Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are an increasingly popular choice in Florida's climate. They function by transferring heat rather than generating it, making them incredibly efficient. Air-source heat pumps can be up to 300% efficient, converting one unit of electricity into three units of heat. Ground-source (or geothermal) heat pumps are even more efficient, as they use the stable temperatures of the earth to provide heating and cooling.
4. Modulating Furnaces
Modulating furnaces operate at various levels of output rather than simply turning on and off. This technology allows the furnace to adjust its heating output to match the home's needs, reducing energy consumption. Modulating furnaces often have higher AFUE ratings and provide more consistent indoor temperatures, enhancing comfort.
5. Hybrid Systems
Hybrid systems combine the efficiency of a heat pump with the reliability of a traditional furnace. In warmer months, the heat pump handles heating and cooling. When temperatures drop, the furnace kicks in. This system is ideal for Pinellas Park residents who want to maximize energy savings throughout the year.
Benefits of Energy-Efficient Furnaces
Investing in an energy-efficient furnace offers numerous advantages:
Lower Energy Bills: Energy-efficient furnaces consume less energy, resulting in lower utility bills.
Increased Comfort: These systems provide consistent heating, eliminating cold spots in your home.
Environmental Impact: Reducing energy consumption helps decrease your carbon footprint.
Long-Term Savings: While energy-efficient models may have a higher upfront cost, the long-term savings on energy bills can outweigh this initial investment.
Conclusion
For residents of Pinellas Park, choosing an energy-efficient furnace is a smart decision for both your wallet and the environment. With a variety of options available—from condensing gas furnaces to heat pumps—there’s a solution for every home.
Before making a purchase, consider consulting with a local HVAC professional to assess your home’s heating needs and explore the best energy-efficient options tailored to your situation. By investing in an energy-efficient furnace, you can enjoy a warm, comfortable home while saving money and reducing your environmental impact.

DC Compressors: Essential Technology for Modern Cooling Solutions
As energy efficiency and environmental concerns take center stage, industries worldwide are shifting toward more sustainable technologies. One key innovation in refrigeration and HVAC systems is the DC compressor, a powerful, efficient alternative to traditional compressors. DC compressors are designed to optimize performance while reducing energy consumption, making them ideal for a range of applications, from portable refrigerators to large-scale cooling systems. In this article, we’ll explore how DC compressors work, their advantages, and why they’re a vital technology for modern cooling solutions.
What is a DC Compressor?
A DC compressor is a type of compressor that runs on direct current (DC) power, as opposed to traditional alternating current (AC) compressors. DC compressors are particularly well-suited for applications where variable speed control, energy efficiency, and compact size are prioritized. By utilizing DC power, these compressors can operate more efficiently, reduce power consumption, and deliver enhanced cooling performance even under varying loads.
How DC Compressors Work
DC compressors use an inverter to convert the direct current from a power source (like a battery or solar panel) into the necessary voltage for the compressor motor. This inverter technology allows the compressor to adjust its speed based on the cooling demand. Unlike AC compressors, which operate in an on/off cycle, DC compressors can vary their speed to match the exact cooling needs, leading to smoother operation, reduced wear, and energy savings.
Common Applications of DC Compressors
DC compressors are versatile and used across several industries:
Refrigeration units in vehicles, marine vessels, and RVs
Portable cooling systems like mini-fridges and camping coolers
Solar-powered refrigerators for off-grid or sustainable applications
Commercial and residential HVAC systems that require energy-efficient solutions
Medical cold storage for precise temperature management
Advantages of DC Compressors
DC compressors offer numerous benefits, making them ideal for today’s energy-conscious and performance-focused applications.
1. Energy Efficiency
One of the standout features of DC compressors is their ability to reduce energy consumption. By adjusting speed based on the actual cooling demand, DC compressors operate more efficiently than traditional models, which consume a constant amount of energy regardless of the workload. In turn, this reduces power bills and environmental impact, which is especially beneficial in applications powered by renewable energy sources like solar.
2. Variable Speed Operation
DC compressors can vary their speed, allowing them to run at slower speeds when cooling demand is low and increase speed when more power is needed. This results in a more consistent temperature, reduces compressor wear and tear, and ultimately extends the compressor’s lifespan.
3. Compact Design and Lightweight
Due to their efficient use of power and optimized design, DC compressors are typically more compact and lightweight than AC models. This makes them a popular choice for mobile or space-constrained applications, such as in vehicles or portable cooling units, where space and weight are at a premium.
4. Low Noise Levels
Since DC compressors adjust their speed according to demand, they tend to operate more quietly than traditional compressors that cycle on and off. This makes DC compressors a preferred choice for applications in noise-sensitive environments, such as residential settings, medical facilities, and mobile cooling units.
5. Eco-Friendly Performance
With their lower energy consumption and efficient operation, DC compressors help reduce carbon emissions, making them a more environmentally friendly choice. When paired with renewable energy sources, such as solar power, they enable fully sustainable cooling solutions, further minimizing their environmental impact.
Why DC Compressors are Essential for Modern Cooling Solutions
As more industries and consumers prioritize sustainable, energy-efficient technologies, DC compressors are becoming a cornerstone of modern cooling solutions. Their adaptability, energy efficiency, and low environmental footprint make them suitable for a range of applications where traditional compressors may fall short.
Growing Demand for Off-Grid and Solar-Powered Applications
With a rise in off-grid living and the increasing adoption of renewable energy, the demand for solar-powered DC compressors is growing. DC compressors can efficiently run on solar power, making them ideal for remote areas, mobile homes, and other off-grid locations where consistent, efficient cooling is crucial. Their ability to operate directly on DC power sources without requiring conversion also makes them more efficient for solar-powered systems, maximizing the use of available energy.
Enhanced Temperature Control for Sensitive Applications
DC compressors’ variable speed capability makes them well-suited for applications that require precise temperature management, such as medical storage and laboratory refrigeration. By maintaining a stable internal temperature, DC compressors help ensure that sensitive items, such as pharmaceuticals and biological samples, are stored safely and consistently.
Essential for Portable and Mobile Cooling Needs
Due to their compact size, low power requirements, and efficient operation, DC compressors are ideal for mobile applications.
