"As solar panels heat up beyond 25°C, their efficiency decreases markedly. Green roofs moderate rooftop temperatures. So we wanted to find out: could green roofs help with the problem of heat reducing the output of solar panels?
Our research compared a “biosolar” green roof — one that combines a solar system with a green roof — and a comparable conventional roof with an equivalent solar system. We measured the impacts on biodiversity and solar output, as well as how the plants coped with having panels installed above them.
The green roof supported much more biodiversity, as one might expect. By reducing average maximum temperatures by about 8°C, it increased solar generation by as much as 107% during peak periods. And while some plant species outperformed others, the vegetation flourished.
These results show we don’t have to choose between a green roof or a solar roof: we can combine the two and reap double the rewards...
How did the panels affect the plants?
In the open areas, we observed minimal changes in the vegetation cover over the study period compared to the initial planted community.
Plant growth was fastest and healthiest in the areas immediately around the solar panels. Several species doubled in coverage. We selected fast-growing vegetation for this section to achieve full coverage of the green roof beds as soon as possible.
The vegetation changed the most in the areas directly below and surrounding the solar panels. The Baby Sun Rose, Aptenia cordifolia, emerged as the dominant plant. It occupied most of the space beneath and surrounding the solar panels, despite having been planted in relatively low densities.
This was surprising: it was not expected the plants would prefer the shaded areas under the panels to the open areas. This shows that shading by solar panels will not prevent the growth of full and healthy roof gardens.
Tumblr media
What were the biodiversity impacts?
We used environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys to compare biodiversity on the green roof and conventional roof. Water run-off samples were collected from both roofs and processed on site using portable citizen scientist eDNA sampling equipment to detect traces of DNA shed by the species on the roof.
The eDNA surveys detected a diverse range of species. These included some species (such as algae and fungi) that are not easily detected using other survey methods. The results confirmed the presence of bird species recorded by the cameras but also showed other visiting bird species went undetected by the cameras.
Overall, the green roof supported four times as many species of birds, over seven times as many arthropods such as insects, spiders and millipedes, and twice as many snail and slug species as the conventional roof. There was many times the diversity of microorganisms such as algae and fungi.
Encouragingly, the green roof attracted species unexpected in the city. They included blue-banded bees (Amegilla cingulata) and metallic shield bugs (Scutiphora pedicellata).
How did the green roof alter temperatures?
The green roof reduced surface temperatures by up to 9.63°C for the solar panels and 6.93°C for the roof surfaces. An 8°C reduction in average peak temperature on the green roof would result in substantial heating and cooling energy savings inside the building.
This lowering of temperatures increased the maximum output of the solar panels by 21-107%, depending on the month. Performance modelling indicates an extensive green roof in central Sydney can, on average, produce 4.5% more electricity at any given light level.
These results show we don’t have to choose between a green roof or a solar roof. We can combine them to take advantage of the many benefits of biosolar green roofs.
Biosolar roofs can help get cities to net zero
The next step is to design green roofs and their plantings specifically to enhance biodiversity. Green roofs and other green infrastructure may alter urban wildlife’s activities and could eventually attract non-urban species.
Our green roof also decreased stormwater runoff, removed a range of run-off pollutants and insulated the building from extremes of temperature. A relatively inexpensive system provides all of these services with moderate maintenance and, best of all, zero energy inputs.
Clearly, biosolar green roofs could make major contributions to net-zero cities. And all that’s needed is space that currently has no other use."

How to Get a Free Solar Deal in NSW
The NSW government offers a variety of solar energy rebates. These include federal small-scale technology certificates (STCs) and local STC rebates.
These rebates help residents maximize their savings through solar battery storage and participate in virtual power plants. This can reduce their energy bills and help alleviate grid pressure.
This state-level financial incentive is currently available for new home batteries and existing solar panel installations. This rebate aims to lower the upfront installation cost for eligible households in NSW.
1.       Federal STC rebate
The NSW government’s solar deal nsw rebate program is a great way to help you cut the upfront cost of a new solar energy system. It offers a number of financial incentives including Small-scale Technology Certificates (STC’s) and the feed-in tariff (FiT) for household batteries. These incentives will play a key role in the state’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2035 and achieve net zero by 2050.
The STC’s are based on the expected output of your solar system, with multipliers assigned based on sunlight exposure. Your physical location also plays a role, which is why the STC’s are referred to as zone ratings. Each year, the deeming period decreases by one year, which reduces the amount of STC’s your solar system will generate. This annual reduction reduces your rebate value by around 4-5%, which will impact your upfront investment. This is why it’s important to act now. Most solar retailers offer the rebate as a point-of-sale discount, which will reduce your upfront investment.
2.       Local STC rebate
You can get a local solar rebate for your NSW home by signing up with a retailer offering a suitable feed-in tariff package. Red Energy, for instance, offers a minimum FIT of 6 cents per kWh and a maximum FIT of 12 cents per kWh. This can add up to significant savings over time.
The local STC rebate can cover up to 30% of your solar system’s upfront cost. The amount can vary slightly depending on your location and the current market price of STCs. Your installer will subtract this value directly from your quote, so you’ll know exactly how much you can expect to save.
The Australian government’s Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) incentive helps make solar power more affordable and accessible for Aussie families. This program is designed to help meet Australia’s renewable energy targets by encouraging people to switch from fossil fuels to solar power. STCs are based on sunlight exposure and vary by zone, so systems installed in regions with more sun will earn more than those in less sunny areas.
3.       Solar battery incentives
The NSW government has recently launched new solar solution vbattery incentives to lower the upfront costs of household batteries. This incentive is in addition to the existing STC rebate and aims to make the technology more accessible to households in NSW. It will also allow residents to enjoy solar power around the clock, as well as help reduce their electricity bills.
The program is called the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, or PDRS. It allows eligible households to save up to $2,400 on the installation cost of a battery system
(depending on size). This is in conjunction with a discount of $250-$400 for connecting your battery to a Virtual Power Plant.
To be eligible, you must first choose a supplier who is accredited to supply and install battery systems under the PDRS. A list of suppliers will be available on the NSW Government website closer to the program’s launch date, November 1, 2024. Once you have chosen a supplier, ask them to provide quotes for different battery sizes. Compare them carefully, focusing on the total cost of the system, battery specifications, warranty terms, and VPP options.
4.       Electricity bill rebate
The NSW government has a solar rebate for low-income households that can help you save on electricity bills and contribute to a cleaner environment. The scheme, which is still in trial, will provide eligible households with a free solar system that can generate enough energy to offset their daily electricity consumption.
The system can also be paired with battery storage to reduce your dependency on the grid. The amount of solar panel rebate NSW you receive will depend on your physical location and the size of the system you install. The small-scale technology certificate (STC) scheme is designed to take your location into account and assigns zones based on sunshine hours. The higher the zone rating, the more STCs you can get.
To learn more about the government rebates available for home solar Sydneyv systems, contact a local solar installer in your area. The team at Efficient Energy Group can provide up-to-date information about government rebates and offer payment plans to suit your budget.

How to Get the Best Solar Deal in New South Wales
New South Wales is home to a number of incentives for homeowners who want to save money and reduce energy consumption. These incentives can help make solar deal nsw power more affordable for NSW households.
Small-scale technology certificates (STCs) and feed-in tariffs can save NSW residents thousands of dollars. These incentives encourage the use of renewable energy and promote self-sufficiency.
Low Income Household Rebate
If you’re a low income household, pensioner or self-funded retiree in New South Wales, you may be eligible to receive a bill relief payment towards your electricity costs. You can apply online or through your energy retailer. Eligible households will receive the rebate as a credit on their quarterly energy bills. Note that the rebate does not cover meter services charges.
State-led educational programs can help spread awareness of the economic and environmental benefits of energy efficiency upgrades. These initiatives can also help empower communities to support each other as they adopt energy efficiency upgrades.
To ensure that a climate rebate is accessible to as many eligible households as possible, states should focus on three existing mechanisms: tax credits for working families, direct rebate payments through the same federal benefits delivery systems that distribute SNAP and other benefit programs to low-income households, and rebates administered by state human service agencies. These programs can ensure that a climate rebate can offset the purchasing power loss of households in the bottom 20 percent of the income distribution.
Feed-in Tariff
The Feed-in Tariff is a payment that households receive from their electricity retailer for the surplus clean energy they export back to the grid. It is a great way for households to reduce their energy costs, and it is a vital part of the solar industry. It has been reduced over the years, but still provides a good return on investment for many homeowners.
This incentive is made possible by Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which are created when a solar panel system is installed and used. They can be traded or applied as a discount to the upfront price of a solar deal PV system.
The STC rebate helps to drive down the cost of renewable energy systems, making them more affordable for a wide range of NSW households. Coupled with other state incentives like the smart export guarantee and battery storage rebate, this helps drive down power bills and support a more sustainable future. This is why so many NSW households are choosing to go solar.
Solar Battery Rebate
Solar energy has become an increasingly popular source of renewable power. It offers many benefits, including reducing dependence on the grid and shielding you from rising electricity costs. It is also environmentally friendly, and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The NSW Government’s solar battery rebate can help eligible households save money by providing financial incentives for solar batteries. The program is open to homes with existing solar panels and a battery installation. Participants can also earn additional incentives by connecting their system to a virtual power plant.
To apply for the NSW solar rebate, start by comparing quotes from local installers. Make sure to choose an accredited installer and ensure that your home meets the eligibility requirements. You can also apply online through the ESS website. After applying, you’ll receive a unique reference number that you can track. Once you’ve been approved, you can schedule the installation of your solar battery system. This process usually takes a few weeks.
Empowering Homes Program
The Empowering Homes Program is an interest-free loan program that can help eligible households purchase solar power and battery systems. It is available for homeowners in grid-connected houses with a household income of up to $180,000. The loan is repaid over a period of up to eight years, so you can save on electricity bills and become more energy self-sufficient.
The program is part of the NSW peak demand reduction scheme and is designed to reduce carbon emissions and lower the cost of electricity for low-income families. It also encourages energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption in NSW.
Smart Energy is a leading partner of the program and offers energy storage systems to residents in Cessnock, Dungog, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Singleton, and Upper Hunter regions. Customers in these areas can now access interest-free loans for solar-battery systems that can deliver more than $250 in savings a year.
This is an amazing opportunity to upgrade your home and reduce your energy costs, even if you have a mortgage. Contact one of the approved suppliers to get a quote and find out how you can take advantage of this offer.
