THE NITTY POPULATION IN THORTON HEATH IS INSANE!?!! Like my mum and I had to encounter a nitty who was trying to guilt trip my mum into giving her some money whilst also cat calling and being an overall weirdo :/ This was on the train station so we stood there for 20 minute with that guy talking and splurging out the bible because the trains there are also shit. 0/10 place sorry for anyone living there.
I’m unfortunately a resident of the gentrified area of West London so I can talk more shit about it than anyone else EXCEPT Southall which I will defend since the shit it gets is way too much than it deserves. The only thing we have is the parks and you could probably fill up a trucks worth of vapes if you have to clean up that place my condolences to any workers. Oh and that one scene in Good Society which made me go ‘bwoah’. The population is mostly old folk and white people who’s racism ranges from constant micro aggression to ‘you want to say a slur so badly’. The hands that I have reserved for my council for the weird stuff they pull is crazy. Also the younger generation think they are bad you are cosplaying south london you are not serious 😭 There is a tiktok somewhere talking about how people tap their oysters on the train we are the only ones who do it 💀

Polar Opposites in Attachments
I have been thinking a lot about how Fanny Price and Henry Crawford represent polar opposites on a scale of attachment. Henry seems to be completely untethered while Fanny is far too rooted.
Fanny is overly attached to everything, even to Mrs. Norris: Fanny���s disposition was such that she could never even think of her aunt Norris in the meagreness and cheerlessness of her own small house, without reproaching herself for some little want of attention to her when they had been last together. and the Bertram sisters, who show Fanny very little kindness: “And her thoughts flew to those absent cousins with most unfeigned and truly tender regret” She is very strongly attached to her brother and Edmund, but also to Mansfield Park itself, “Her heart was completely sad at parting. She had tears for every room in the house, much more for every beloved inhabitant.”
I don’t think this is exactly a good thing, and it may well be one of Fanny’s flaws, because her strong attachments are to people that hurt her. She constantly forgives Edmund even when he forgets her and doesn’t even show her grief. She also seems almost unable to feel resentment for mistreatment for people within her circle. That isn’t healthy.
Henry Crawford on the other hand is almost completely untethered to anything. His parents are dead, so no attachment is possible there. Henry likes his uncle, but his trip to visit Admiral Crawford in Bath is really motivated by getting away from Maria now that the fun is over. He also doesn’t confide in the Admiral when he plans to propose to Fanny. As for his sister, it’s clear that Henry loves her, but he does not agree to be her guardian and instead Mary has to try her luck with Mrs. Grant (who is wonderful, but still).
Henry doesn’t spend very much time at all at his estate, Everingham, returning there for only two weeks in the fall and mostly just to shoot birds. While he proves that he is capable of managing it, it seems like he just treats it as an income, much in the same way he expects Edmund to collect his income from Thornton Lacey and only visit twice a year.
The problem with Fanny seems to be where she is rooted. She’s a tree that’s been planted in thin soil and her branches are completely shaded out by her cousins and Mrs. Norris. She cannot thrive, or really be healthy, but she also can’t do anything to fix her situation. Henry’s problem is that he is all branches, no roots. He just flies around to wherever the best sunlight is but can’t actually grow as a person until he has some sort of strong attachment to a place or person.
(And I need to see if I can draw that metaphor because it’s been stuck in my head for WEEKS. (Imagine a guy but his arms are leafy tree branches and a girl who has like, two leaves on her arms, but a huge mass of roots under her, kind of like a bonsai tree))
